Sensible away game approach.
-
well said!!
-
My year of being in court contines this week, so I'll be posting articles, but not be around much.
-
I would like to add that anyone claiming podiums, 1sts etc are closet Huns. No need for it. We're all grown ups here.
4th?
-
I am very much in favour of pairing Lennon and Gravesen, Caldwell could be pretty useful. I would like to have seen us buy a tall and mobile player like Severin for such matches. The team does look a whole lot better with the new arrivals.
-
The holding role is for me Gary Caldwells eventual position in the team. I was impressed with him in this role for Scotland away to Italy in the last round of qualifiers.
-
Nik Heaky you just made me laugh very much!!
-
So if we were to be serious about playing Caldavaro in midfield we should give him a runout in this position against Aberdeen, say when we're already 3-0 up?
-
A tough selection choice but I think it´s too much of a gamble to put Bobo back in without at least 2-3 games under his belt. Facing Rooney and Ronaldo requires 100 per cent fitness and game sharpness, neither of which Bobo is likely to have in 9 days time. I can see Caldwell keeping his place at the back and a very busy midfield protecting the defence rather than being too active going forward.
may the Theatre of Dreams be just that for our new Bhoys.
Hail, hail from Denia.
-
Bring Nakamur, Jarosik and Maloney on when we are 3-0 up!
-
Paul - best of luck in your legal travails
WG
-
Very interesting Paul, quite a bold statement.
I can't see GS getting close to a team until a couple of days before the game.
He will probabaly know the system he wants to adopt against Man Utd right now, but not quite the players who will fit into that sytem.
Counter attack will probabaly be the flavour of the night for Celtic, where the will be looking to use the talents of McGeady and the vision of Nakamura.
Will the pace of Miller be used?
Gravesen will be deployed as an offensive centre mid probably, much to the shock of some people. His ability to keep possesion will be key.

Shameless self promotion, I've stuck this on £b@y this morning:

Paul,
Caldwell in central midfield is interesting (and good IMO) is this from Left field or do ya’ know something:-)
On the other stuff your redoubtable pragmatism should stand you in good stead - not a pleasant experience no matter what the outcome – best of luck!
Dontb,
From last;
I’m not sure who’ll be playing so I just stuck to the last 11.
I think Rooney will be playing which will be a boost for them but I’m a wee bit suspicious of Ferdinand’s injury (so may see Heinze at CB) – not risking him against the likes of Andorra makes perfect sense but foot knocks can be strange injuries and take time to heal!
MU have had a blistering start to the season – yet their fans are far from happy with the Summer transfer dealings - the feeling seems to they’re glad to have Carrick but they overpaid. The Hargreaves signing was looking a dead cert (despite BMunchen’s denials) this appeased the support to some extent.
Now the dust has settled – they haven’t replaced the Iconic Keane or Van Nistelrooy and with the exception of Solskjaer’s return (and lets face it class though he is, has always been a bit part player) they are weaker than they were last year.
In fact if it wasn’t for Giggs and Scholes Indian summer they would look positively light weight!
Time will tell but IMO the writings on the wall – no serious Nett spend, reduction in the squad and quality youngsters out on loan!
Good season to be playing them IMO)!!!

I appreciate your desire to see an attacking display of counter-attacking football but the night will really be about Celtic players doing plenty of running and blocking (face, legs, chest, hands if you can get away with it).
In other words, its a great chance for Gravesen to show Celtic fans why Lawwell/Strachan paid the money they did. To me its a perfect opportunity to see the improvement in the side.
I predict a 1-0 win or a 1-1 draw, but not before manure have had about 15 shots on goal. Celtic I can't see winning style points, just champions league away points, and champions league points mean champions league money.

Otto
are you an Ebay regular if so I'm looking for some advice, I have recently inherited Celtic Football Guides which are little pocket books, some of our older (ehem) contributors may remember them. dating from 1951-52 season, looking to see what memories these terrific little books stir and how rare they are. If i knew how to do the link thing to a photograph i would put a few on, they are fascinating.
-
out of pure curiosity
anyone know how much an orignal first copy of the celtic view would fetch?
-
On the basis of 'one swallow does not a summer make', I have yet to be convinced of McGeady's credentials - I still reckon he has a lot to prove in terms of end product, although certainly not ability which is evident for all to see.
Although I have realistic expectations of Man Utd encounters, I'm hopeful that McGeady will come of age in these games - I think he could be our best performer in these games as he will be facing some real footballers for a change, a change that I think will suit him perfectly.
Only a hunch...time will tell.
-
not sure it'd be wise throwing bobo back in there with no real fitness levels.
we have nothing to lose in this game so he should just put out his strongest team, if he/we know what that is yet. we would not expect to beat top seeds and to sit with our backs to the wall from the word go would be crazy.
wed need two up front cos its just gonna come back as quick as we are punting it up if we dont.
its just nice to be there tho, isnt it.

If the midfield lines up as Paul has predicted, Caldwell and Lennon will work hard to give Gravesen a bit of freedom, we cannot approach this game with an ultra defesive attitude.
I was delighted when the transfer window shut and Man Uts hadn't strengthened - we can win the midfield battle!
And if we win the midfield battle they cannot get the right supply to their strikers.
As I have said before, we should be looking to adopt an individual strategy for every game - and be looking for 3 points from every game.
This Man Utd team is not so different than the one that was eliminated at this stage last season.
-
hi Paul, cauldwell and nl in midfield ? thats interesting. İve been thinking of Garry maybe instead of Neil in a holding role at some point but thats quite a big change for such an important game ! Dont you think we have been suffering a little from too many personel changes recently? We really need a little continuity in the team now imo .
-

NAFOS please form an orderly queue

-
kittoch - fairly regular, do a search of ebay and see if they have the same thing on there before you put them on, if you can't find them I'd suggest popping into one of the football memorabilia shops (there's one near the Tron) to check their value so you can set a reserve. Old celtic books fetch a fair price nowadays.
-
I reckon we'd get murdered at Old trafford with that midfield. Our defense is nowhere near good enough or experienced at playing together to sit back as much as a midfield of Caldwell Gravesen Lenny and McGeady would. We need more option of an outball and movement to take the pressure off the defense. Id be inclined to play Hesselink up front himself with two supporting midfielders and 3 more central midfielders. Think hitting Hesselink and getting McGeady and say Naka playing off him would retain possesion in safer possitions whilst giving an option to attack a not particularly steady Man Utd defense
-
Micheal67,
Depends how we line up but if Paul's positional and injury predictions are correct we might look quite formiddable!
Bare in mind - MU will be attacking down the flanks and through the middle - Strong counter attack wiil be best!
…………………...……..Boruc

Lennon, Caldwell, Graveson, Mcgeady in midfield a recipe for disaster IMO.
Lennon will not be able to keep up with the pace of Rooney, Saha, Ronaldo even, solskar. Not IMO in a 4-4-2 system, incorporated in a 4-5-1 maybe.
Caldwell has never played this role before for Celtic.
Balde will be well off the pace in terms of match fitness. I believe if we try to match Man utd with a 4-4-2 system it could be a recipe for disaster.
My preffered option would be 4-5-1, resembling a 4--4-1-1. Millars work rate and speed should be used directly behind JVOH.
Mcgeady on the right (Irish position), Graveson centre midfield alongside Jarowsik, Pearson on the left. Both Pearsons and Mcgeadys back tracking and defensive duties will be imperitive.
Back four of Wilson, Caldwell, Macmanus, Naylor.
Boruc
Wilson
Caldwell
Macmanus
Naylor
Mcgeady
Graveson
Jarowsik
Pearson
Millar
JVOH.
This team may well change for future games in Europe in the event of a return to full fitness of Balde and Maloney.
Bench that includes Magic, Beattie, Thompson, Telfer, Naka. Riordan. Only my opinion which could change in 10 minutes :)
-
Michael67 -
bear in mind 2 facts:
1. Our wing backs will need cover/support
2. Our central defence will need significant protection.
We are lucky in that GS has pleanty of experience playing against Man Utd with a weaker team. He knows fine well what to expect.
I would like to see Jarosik in there instead of Caldwell. Form in the comming games will decide the team.
-
WG ,
I attended both games from memory . Standing outside Springfield Vaults with bag of crisps beforehand while nafos snr had his fill .
Also got a rosette ! (per last weeks Chicken Pathe News posts)
-
I have a wee feeling that GS will go with Miller and VoH for the dons and Man U games. Zurawski doesnt put in half the work Miller does. Miller would track back to the 18 yard line if told - Zurawski is a bit lazy when it comes to tracking and a wind bag when tackling.
The team that starts sat morning will be the one that walks onto Old Trafford. We are after 1 point and it'll be a good point if we get it.

On the subject of Ebay.
I have 2 programmes of the Coronation cup (semi and final)in my loft. given to me from my Mother. I also have, a Celtic v Sporting Club de Lexoi (spelling) a programme, I understand was the first competitive European match the hoops played.
Has anyone got an idea of the scores in these three games?
Should I insure them?
-
I've posted before that I have a good feeling about this game.
It will be Gordon Strachan's first match as Celtic manager where a draw would be considered a fantastic result. If his previous managerial experience taught him anything, it is how to avoid defeat at places like Old Trafford.
I would like to see Kenny Miller partner JVoH in attack, perhaps in a more withdrawn role to provide extra cover in midfield. His pace alone would pose a serious threat to ManU on the counter-attack. I think Zurawski is a better all-round player than Miller, so would play him at home, but the away ties, with the possibility of playing balls over the top to chase, should suit Miller's game perfectly.
I believe Jock Stein used to play John Hughes at home and Bobby Lennox away for similar reasons.
-
We need to get Bobo and Shaunaldinho fit for the games that matter-Benfica and Copenhagen.
A goal at OT would be a bonus, never mind a point.
I also have misgivings about how El Gordo will resist the mindgames of the Knight of the Realm.
Can Vennegoor AND Hesselink play together?

MANAGERS REPORT by James McGrory
In my past reports I have started off on a pessimistic note, but I am sure you will forgive me this time for feeling in a very optimistic frame of mind. I have strived in co-operation with my directors to field a team worthy of this great old club, and endeavour to bring the Scottish Cup back to the “Paradise.” We have brought the cup back after fourteen years-although; it wasn’t played for in the war years, it is still that time since it was last here. Mind you I won’t say that we have a team to compare with the giants of the past, but give these lads a chance, I am sure they will go places. They have the ability, stamina, youth, enthusiasm, and above all the real old Celtic spirit, and I for one predict that in a year or two we will have a team, that will not only compare with those in the past but will do even greater deeds. The team that has just won the Scottish Cup for the sixteenth time is the youngest ever to do this.
Our aim was to win the Cup, and with great battles against East-Fife 2-2 and 4-2. Duns 4-0, Aberdeen 3-0, Hearts 2-1, Raith Rovers 3-2, and our old friends in the final Motherwell 1-0, our object was achieved.
Our thoughts were now on America, and we left Central Station an the 8th May 1951amidst scenes of enthusiasm which will never be forgotten by those of us who were lucky enough to be there. The tour was a great success winning seven matches, drawing one and losing one.. It was grand to meet so many old friends, and old supporters of this great club who did their best to make our stay in America, a very pleasant one, but it was even more wonderful to come back to Central Station on the 30th June to be greeted in such a way as only Celtic supporters can do.
Thank You
James McGrory
Great to see the same passion and call for patience we see today, and the appreciation of the support, still as good today.

Micheal_67,
I'd love to see Naka, Maloney and McGeady in the same midfield and while Man U aren't the most physiacl there it may look a little light weight for OT.
MU's great players are flawed;
Rooney doesn't score enough and Rnaldo's final ball is often lacking - however they are both capable of winning a game on their own given time and space!
Having said that didn't Brazil look brilliant playing counter attacking football - possesion isn't everything!
Al Obundy,
Agree with you regarding Lennon but the fact is;
He's the club Captian and as far as continuity and experience is a must.
Secondly - whether or not Caldwell fills the position in the longer term or not - we simply don't have anyone close to Lennon, when it comes to breaking down attacks CRUCIAL against Man U!
DontB,
Lets hope WGS doesn't bite, they will be definetely in the post!
-
If all are fit, I'd go with:
===========Boruc===========
Wilson=Balde=McManus=Naylor
==Gravesen=Lennon=Jarosik==
McGeady============Nakamura
=========Hesselink=========
With a bench of:
Marshall
Caldwell
Maloney
Zurawski
Pearson
Sno
Miller
But then again, I am not the manager, and I trust Gordon to pick the correct team for each occasion.
-
I understand that Balde has been training very hard for a couple of weeks now.....double shifts etc.
I do hope he gets a game this weekend, to get him closer to match fit.
I know it might sound strange but in the context of our season Aberdeen on Saurday might be even more important than Man U on Wednesday !
-
Good Luck Paul - Hope all goes well for you.
-
Guys, I heard that Bobo, Shaun and Riordan played in a friendly over the weekend. Does anyone know how they faired?

Hi All,
Interesting takes on the team for Old Trafford, I think a 4-5-1 would be our best bet of taking a positive result from the game, with various team selections running through my mind.
I wonder if anyone can help me out with a wee problem, I will be in Milan on the evening of the match, I found a pub called The Friends, on Via Le Monte Santo listed on celticbars.com but my Italian colleagues are not sure that they will be showing the match!
Anybody know of a place in Milan that is guaranteed to be showing the game? Please?

The points at Pittodrie are crucial while anything at OT is a bonus; IMO September's matches are key!

We will have played Copenhagen at home – Arguably our easiest CL game

I'd go with pretty much the same team as you mate. I think In a game like that it's important to keep possesion.
I'd have Caldwell in before big Mick tho.
-
Paul67,
4 5 1 formation
McGeady and Miller/Pearson/Maloney on the wing to make a 5 midfield and burat forward to support Jan when in attack.
Boruc
Wilson
Naylor
Balde
Caldwell
Jarosik
Lennon
Gravsen
McGeady
one from Miller/Pearson/Maloney
Vennegoor of Hesslink
-
WGS
Yes I'm with you mate.
-
You are all TooooooO early with what team against Man U it is 9 long days awayyyyyyyyyyy
-
No way WGS will play Caldwell in midfield for the first time in a game this important. Can't see Naka getting in there either. WGS will go for strength not culture in this game.
maybe...
Boruc
Wilson
Balde or Caldwell (in that order of preference for me)
McManus
Naylor
McGeady
Jarosik
Graveson
Lennon
Pearson
JVoH
Lennon playing in front of the back line with Jarosik and Graveson in front of him.
You heard it here first :)
-
anyone know when John Kennedy is due back?
-
If McManus plays at the back this game then i don't hold out much hope.
Rooney and Saha will take him to the cleanerS. It will either result in him giving away stupid free kicks which he is prone to do in dangerous areas or lose his man resulting in a goal.
SPL you might get away with it but not CL. You will be severly punished by top quality strikers.
-
I think McManus injured himself stretching to pot a red at Riley's snooker hall in Bellshill. He should have used a rest.
-
i heard he got injured when ally mccoist turned him and stripped him for pace!
-
Cant wait for game against Man U. Its time for Celtic to step up a gear and show people what this club is all about. We have the stadium, we have the fans and we have the players(sort of!) Make yourself a hero and Gordo and select the following team (if all fit)
Boruc
Wilson
Caldwell
McManus
Naylor
McGeady
Pearson
Lennon
Graveson
Nakamura
VOH
Bring Miller/Jiri on second half
Hail! Hail!
-
McManus will prove most of you wrong. He has continually did so. I think he gets better all the time. Was Our CSC's player of the year last season. Any MAN.U supporter will tell you the front pairing can also be very frustrating as well as very good. Saha tends to end up wide left in games whilst rooney easily can get wound up and frustrated. If we can keep our cool we can outthink the front pairing. As firsbyhoop said earlier WGS knows from past experiences how to frustrate the big teams. Good experience to have. We shall have the counter attack and the threat from set pieces.
These are are main weaponry along with the spoiler tactics. Get behind the ball make it difficult and try to take a chance when it comes along. We are the underdogs , a tag which I very much prefer to have.
Bring them on!!
-
Guess which aspect of Ally Brazil's colourful life as a player with Ipswich,Man U and Scotland makes it onto the front page of the bogpapers?
Difficult editorial decision there.
Although they beat us last season we should have enough bods in the squad to rotate key players for the home game against DAFC.Also the diddycup v the Buddies should be category 2,or even 3.
-
Paul67 - from a purely professional point of view, which ct will you be appearing in?
-
We must play our best players against Man U and that must surely mean a central midfield of Lennon/Jarosik/Graveson with McGeady on one wing and probably Kenny Miller on the other (supporting the big man up front)
If we're only playing one up front with no dedicated support I'd be very unsure of playing Jan Van.... not sure that a type of game he's suited or used to.
So
Boruc
Naylor
Wilson
Balde
McManus
Lennon
Jarosik
Graveson
McGeady
Miller
JVoH
I'm still not convinced about Caldwell, in defence and certainly not in Midfield!
Jarosik must play, he's got of EPL experience.
-
big bad...
Coronation Cup
-
if mcmanus is injured and bobo still not fit for saturday and then wednesday does this only leave caldwell for centre half.
this is a worry if that is the case. hence my concern on window closing day that we didnt bring in another center half.
-
The fullbacks lack European, never mind CL experience.Man U are not weak down the flanks. Our wide midfield players will have to get back to help.
Mick has been calmer this season[?due to the captaincy]but Mcmanus v Rooney could lead to blown fuses all round the park.
Of course this speculation is all very well but we'll need to start with 3 points at Pittodrie.
I wasn't at the game but I understand our attempt at a European awayleg formation[if that's what it was]at Inverness was not much to get gruntled about.
Chairbhoy's right,by the end of this month we'll know if it's Shaft or Radiohead that's on the CQN wheels of steel.
-
Big Liam - if things had been different and McManus went to St. Mirren as planned, he would have became Scott Wilson mark 2.
-
Hello Bhoys and Ghirls!
I'm just back from a week of drink in Zante (basically a normal week only with better weather) and I'm not yet 100% up to date on the ins and outs of the transfers before the deadline.
I know that we got:
IN
JVOH - €5
Naylor - £600k + big head Mulgrew
Gravesen - £2m (£1 now £1m later?)
OUT
Petrov - £6.5m possibly up to £8 (anyone know the conditions?)
Varga - said on Sky Sports News over there £1.1m, surely not?
Wallace - Sky Sports News said undisclosed, any ideas?
I don't think we've got anyone else in at any level(?) but have we loaned any of the younger players out?
Gravesen is in my opinion exactly the type of player who we need in centre mid.
However, we need to have 2 players who play like him in there. As has been said already he is not a "defensive midfielder", yes he can tackle, but his talents are running the game from the middle. We can't afford to play him defensively but we should have 2 players in there who like Gravesen can defend effectively as well as go forward and control the game.
I don't know if we have another player like that in the team at the moment which is slightly worrying. We will get away with having Gravesen as a CM (even a DM although it shouldn't be needed) in the SPL with a more attack minded player alongside him (Maloney, McGeady, Naka or Pearson) he would work well with Sno but the youngster is unproven and hasn't shown consistancy at any level YET. On the other hand in Europe I can only see us going with a Lennon type midfielder, again maybe Sno but he doesn't have the experience. Good attacking wingers with a solid core to the team is what is needed againt strong opponents.
Just a little sidenote. I thought Miller was excellent for Scotland before coming off, needs to get into the box more but it got me thinking. He'd make a good midfielder. Think of the workrate...
Oh and his 1t touch was excellent!
Just before I go has anyone got any links to a video compilation of Gravesen or even a link to the press conference? It doesn't seem to be up the official site, only the CIS cup draw and TeamCard entry system links seem to be up.
Thanks!
-
Malone-Lawson went to St Johnstone on loan.
Roy came in for Lenny and Pearo and left with Stan and Ross Wallace, for a combined fee of somewhere between 800k and 1.3 m.
As far as the Villa negotiations are concerned no mention of a friendly has yet appeared.Similarly with Gravesen.
Oh,and we turned down a 22m bid from Chelsea for the Telfmeister`¬)

Just back from Bulgaria (the irony) and Im very glad of Celtics ins and outs in the transfer market - shrewd business all round.
Good Luck Paul67.
Man Utd game?
Its a bit far away, but a counter-attacking game sounds sound, but GS believes in possession in the other half so I find it a very bold statement.
Whats wrong with Jarosik and Gravesen in midfield? Both may appear similar, but I think it would work.
Lennon is a no-no, no-no NO.
Big Bad Jan and Miller up front for me.
Again, on Saturday, we saw Miller can create, works and if Man Utd sit high enough up the park, he can easily get in there.

Difficult decisions lie ahead no doubt.
Bobo being a bit ring rusty and off the ball, may cost us dear, on the other hand he might not and we certainly need him. So difficult one there, although i wouldnt fancy going to old trafford with a central defensive pairing of caldwell and mcmanus, so i might throw him in and hope he doesnt have any bobo moments.
Difficult decision then on who would partner Bobo, McManus would give a more balanced partnership, but he is likely to give away penalties and free kicks in dangerous areas.
I most certainly absolutely definitely would NOT even entertain thinking about the possibility of even playing caldwell in midfield!
I cant think of anything he would offer in terms of improving the team and helping get a result.
We need intelligent players out there, where every man knows his position, knows what he has been told to do and sticks to it. Back tracking and being willing and able to mark someone elses man if need be will be important, their movement off the ball will be far better and quicker.
It really is difficult, id be tempted to go for maloney and mcgeady on the flanks switching every now and then, but if you canty use Naka in the champions league, when the hell would you play him!?
Id go 2 up top, Millers work rate can effectively turn him into an extra midfielder when we dont have the ball, so he gets the nod ahead of Zurawski.
Which then leaves picking 2 out of Lennon, Graveson and Jiri, when id play all 3 of them!
Graveson will be lacking match fitness, so i might leave him out, we will need to be as sharp and fitter than them to stand any chance, especially in the middle of the park. Hopefully we'l get to see how fit he is on Saturday, and he has played for Denmark, so hopefully he will be fine, in that case i would possibly leave out Jiri, hes been giving the ball away very cheaply at times, we cant do that and get away with it, especially at their place.

Someone posted earlier about Big Mick pulling a hamstring whilst away with Wattie's wonders. Any further info on this and any of the other Hoops away on international duty?
I'm sure Kenny Miller must have tweaked something on saturday after all those cartwheels and the lap of honour to celebrate his penalty against the Fishermans Friends.

Afternoon all
As is often the case, the closure of the transfer window brings us dedicated denizens of CQN towards the realisation that our squad is fixed for the next wee while. This means that the debate then moves on to a dissection of the ‘best XI’ which can often be as controversial as any view on what does or does not constitute a ‘journeyman’…..
Anyhow, being a man of science rather than a man of faith, I tend to seek both solace and salvation in the data. I have spent a little time looking at some high level numbers from last season and I think the following highlights may help some of us when debating the concept of a first choice team.
Highlights from the 38 game league campaign:
• 25 players were used in total
• Most starting appearances were by McManus, Petrov and Telfer (all 36)
• Most substitute appearances were Pearson (16), McGeady (9) and Maloney (9)
• Least appearances were by Lawson (1 start, 2 sub) and Agathe (4 sub)
The following table shows the most used first 11 from across the season highlighting the number of games started; % of league games started; goals scored. The other seven names were the next ‘most regularly’ selected players from the first team squad.
GK, A Boruc, 34, 89%, 0.
RB, P Telfer, 36, 95%, 1.
CB, S McManus, 36, 95%, 7.
CB, B Balde, 28, 74%, 1.
LB, M Camara, 18, 47%, 0.
RM, S Nakamura, 30, 79%, 6.
CM, N Lennon, 32, 84%, 1.
CM, S Petrov, 36, 95%, 10.
LM, S Maloney, 27, 71%, 13.
CF, J Hartson, 29, 76%, 18.
CF, M Zurawski, 22, 58%, 16.
Sub 1, M Wilson, 14, 37%, 0.
Sub 2, A McGeady, 11, 29%, 4.
Sub 3, A Thompson, 11, 29%, 2.
Sub 4, R Keane, 10, 26%, 1.
Sub 5, S Varga, 9, 24%, 1.
Sub 6, R Wallace, 8, 21%, 0.
Sub 7, C Beattie, 7, 18%, 6.
Highlights from this table:
• Left back had the most turnover of players throughout the season
• Zurawski had a goals to games started ratio of 73%, Hartson was 62%
• 3 of the most regularly used first 11 have now left the club (Petrov, Camara, Hartson)
• 3 of the most regularly used ‘substitute 7’ have now left the club (Keane, Varga, Wallace)
Looking for Le Revolution? Well friends, you can see from the above table that the biggest revolution is actually taking place before our very eyes. 6 of the first 18 from last season have moved on and there are now question marks over how many games excellent first XI servants like Balde, McManus,Telfer, Lennon and Maloney will actually play.
This all adds up to an amazing amount of turbulence in the celtic first XI and this is something we should all bear in mind when trying to assess how far we have come from last year. WGS was right to thank those who have gone before this years squad as they have provided a firm platform and a great opportunity in Europe.
Telfer, Camara, McManus, Balde et al. You were the vintage of season 2005/06 and the whole celtic family are firmly in your debt.
Now, does anyone really think they can choose a first eleven for more than two or three games at a time? Looking at the numbers, the one thing I am sure of is that come the end of the season, there will not be a single player with as many league appearances this year as those at the top of last years class. There has been a lot of turnover but an undoubted raising of the general quality in the first 18.

Spot on - bar Miller that is. What Magic might lack in comparative workrate he more than makes up for in comparative ability to score a goal.
I would be inclined to go either Magic or VofH, and if your looking at Millers workrate making him a supplementary midfielder, id just go for an actual midfielder...

what about pearson then? has he no need at Celtic?

With Websters move now going through, Petrov couldve done the same thing with Celtic.
I actually dont feel too hard done by with Stans leaving.
Only fault was when he first said he wanted to go - before the Rangers game. Not like he was going anywhere before the season ended. Maybe he wanted it off his chest or to cover possible poor performances.

Fair point about Miller Michael, but if you opt to play a midfielder and have 1 up top, he'l be as likely as Miller to score anyhow.
Id rather 2 up top, im not a fan of 1 up front

My last post was 20 days prior to the closure of the transfer window. At that stage I knew I was going to either ban myself from posting or lose my job.
So here is an exiled CQN posters review of the last month.
Firstly I'm delighted it's over. Emotions were running high. The bhoys in the mine are indeed bhoys like the rest of us. Some posters did get a little personal during the anxious hours. Let us all learn from that.
I sat through the Hibs first half football lesson and prayed that JVOH could possibly be the real deal. He was ! Lee Naylor was also a sound addition to the team. Keep it up Lee.
Tommy G is a man who I would hate to have signed for Rangers - he will intimidate and can play. Welcome Tommy.
PL played a binder throughout - the money for Stan and the Sunderland duo was outstanding.
We will miss Stan. He gave us 7 years and in my opinion was second only to Henrik in that time. Best wishes to you and your family , you will always be one of us. I also believe that some posters owe Stan a vitual appology. 7 years and £8M is a fantastic return.
The overall squad is now more complete , more competition for places , younger players etc.
We need to add to the defense, it would have been great to do so in August but I'm confident that WGS will now turn his attention to that part of the team.
Boruc, JVOH, TG and the returning Bobo means that the spine of the team is now strong again. WGS has the players to add skill to the strong spine and that is a winning combination.
Rangers - well well, the accounts say a lot the actions say more.
£13M CL money from last season plus the £18 JJB money and what so they sign ? 2 Man U boys on loan, 3 Austria Vienna guys from a fire sale and a collection of at best Journeymen. Actions speak louder than words !
The Scottish press will still try to convince themselves that Rangers have a chance , it will be close etc. Just like we did when we signed Andy Peyton, Carl Muggleton etc. and they were signing the England team.
How great is it to review a post about the team options we have for the Champions League games. Our draw is difficult , but we can progress.
It is also great to look forward to a game at Aberdeen, a home game in two weeks and a few right good singsong nights , not to mention the Old Firm game.
We the support now need to keep our part of the deal - less negativity at Celtic Park and a lot more singing and atmosphere. More of what it was like after JVOH came on against Hibs.
Finally - good job Paul for not only getting it right but also for providing the means for all Celtic fans , optimists , miners the lot to share their views.
Now for the treble !!!!!

Just read about Giacinto Facchetti- a sad los.

Cheers WG, lovejoy, the bhoy darth, Nuclearfallout and Kerrydale St. No major interest this week, it will be later in the month the action starts (or finishes at long last, I should say).
Chairbhoy, 11:25, I know nothing about what is being planned for the game.
Bhoyfaethebul, 11:39, the more I see Gary Caldwell, the most I think he is a midfield player. Agree, there are too many changes at the moment, but the alternative is not looking promising either.

Afternoon Bhoys,
Very intrested with the situation of the Portuguese clubs. A decision is to be made on September 11(spooky) on whether or not the Porto, Sporting and Benfica will be allowed compete in the CL this season, strangely only days from the start of the Group Stages, and if they're chucked out we could face the likes of Ajax.
Now, I'm no expert on the Portuguese or Dutch game, but would it not be better if we were to get Ajax over Benfica. Ajax will only have days to find out where they're heading or if they're heading anywhere at all, and anyway, are they as good as Benfica? After all, Copenhagen - who we all see as the whipping boys of the group - put them out in qualifying, so it might not be a bad thing if our trip to Portugal is cancelled. Well, except for everyone who booked a trip to Portugal!
Anyone have a better idea than me?
MJ88
-
MJ88,
Your Question is moot.
The Scenario that you refer to, as propagated by the Yellow Press is nonsense.
The possible Interdiction of the Portuguese Soccer Clubs,By the F.I.F.A. will not be successfully argued.
There are no worries in that regard.
The Euro Match- ups will take as originally meted.

I can't understand how Ajax, Osasuna and Chievo have been earmarked. Were they the highest ranked non qualifiers? How do the other non qualifiers feel at this pre selected subs bench? Uefa should be faced with several more law suits caused by this non competitive pre selection.
I personally think its a bluff and we'll be in Lisbon where we should be. Seems to me Benfica have done nothing wrong and the Portuguese FA enforced their rules appropriately. This is just strong armed bullying to make the Gil Vicente chairman back down. I'm sure a few portuguese heavies will be whispering endearments in his ear as we speak, unless he is THE portuguese heavy.
If we had to get one from that list, I'd pick Chievo. Nice town Verona, Kerrang CSC could form an opera sub branch, and their Owner is a Celtic Fan
-
The only potential threat to the fixture is that FIFA are the final arbiters, therefore logic may go completely out the window.
The severity of the Portuguese offence,if offence there was,is miniscule compared to the recent Italian shenanigans ie there is no suggestion of bribery, matchfixing etc and seems to involve the arcane matters of player registration,so beloved of JFarry, esq.
But,with FIFA,who knows?
-
Pookah, Setting free the bears,
Don't think myself that it'll come through. It seems a bit extreme that the top clubs should suffer because of one team protesting after breaking a rule it should have known. Also don't think it would be in FIFA's best interest to have major clubs from Portugal and Italy unhappy with them as all this G14 stuff gets bigger.
Was just interseted to see if it would be better for us group changed or if it's better the way it is.

Don't know if it's been posted previously but the official site has announced the following sad news:
ITALIAN football lost one of hit heroes on Monday after Giacinto Facchetti died of cancer at the age of 64.
Facchetti himself played a part in Celtic’s history as he was the captain of Inter Milan when Celtic beat them 2-1 in the European Cup final in Lisbon in 1967.
Lisbon Lion John Clark has still been in touch with the Italian giant over the past few years and he was stunned to hear the news.
He said: “Every time I met him he couldn’t be kinder and nothing was too much for him so this has come as a real shock.
“When the European Cup final was played at Hampden in 2002, he visited us up here at Celtic Park and we talked over the old times together.
“When our paths first crossed as players he was at his height on the pitch and the captain of the national team but he certainly moved up the ranks at Inter to become the club president.
“When Inter played Rangers over here last December, I gave him a call about getting Adriano’s shirt for charity and he couldn’t have been more helpful.
“He invited me down to the hotel straight away and sorted everything out for me. He will be sadly missed in Italian football as he was one of the giants and a real gentleman.”
-
Fat Bhoy not Slim,
Your point is well taken....
Unfortunately, the Minions of Mischief, that are the Press, are all too well aware of the fears that they are conjuring up, amongst these very Celtic supporters to whom you refer.
This, of course,is S.O.P., as far as these purveyors of anxiety and unease, who never miss an opportunity to dispense dismay among the Celtic Faithful.

Does anyone know how bad the thigh strain injury is to young McManus? Will he be fit for Saturday?
-
Paul,
As previous posters have mentioned Stan Petrov was actually one of our best pieces of asset management over the years.
We did amortisation to death last season, so in changing economic climates we need to refocus. Do you have any idea how much the development of a youth player costs?
I would be interested to hear ball park figures.
-
Benfica matches will go ahead as planned. Bear in mind Man U supporters have also booked flights etc.
I think it's a tad early to be naming a team to play ManU in view of the new players and the guys returning from injury.
I will chuckle at the media getting over excited about NL not being able to play in the same team as TG. (You will recall the same story when RK and PL played with NL).
Even more headlines about the Celtic players who will be unhappy at being left on the bench. How DR would still be playing every week for Hibs..........Oh and how BF will strengthen the Rangers midfield no matter who he plays with.

When Graveson left to rejoin the Danish squad, the "meeja" knew fine well that he had signed, however, it didn't stop them spouting their lazy journalism and attempting to spread fear amongst the faithful (which they are good at) Let us be honest - bad news about Celtic sells their papers.

-
Paul,
Let me try to phrase it another way!
Do you think that Caldwell was signed predominantly in a holding midfield role?
If so his role at centre back was in lieu of a Balde/Kennedy return.
Which makes the controversial re-signing of Varga as a good bit of business!
Dontb et al,
Agree totally over the Portuguese Uefa/Fifa situation, with the let off for AC Milan, Juve going to civil court - the recent Greek debacle, Global businesses becoming seriously involved in Football teams.
It could get very messy - and as usual the only STAKEHOLDER that will have little or no say will be the clubs fans!

The club Captain is a stick on to play in at least the 3 away CL games and probably more than that. If GS hadn't that in mind then he would have been allowed to leave last week.

I couldn't disagree more about Neil Lennon.
Yes he may not be what he was.
However he has been left exposed in recent matches ,by the lightwieght, attack minded system that Celtic have played.
He is alway a avaiable for a pass, has a great first touch and rarely gives the ball away.
Admitedly he has had a few scary passes in the last three games.
However you can count the number of mistakes he has made in 6 years, on one hand.
If the formation is correct around him Lennon will rise to the occassion.
As he did against Barca,Milan,Juve,Liverpool etc, etc.
His game was never about pace.
He will strut that chest out, and dominate the possession.
He's our captain ,and he deserves our support. He gives his all ,and his all is still good enough.
There's only one Neil Lennon!

I was at the Kilmarnock Hibs game at New Year when there was talk of us going for Caldwell so I watched him closely. Evening all,
I was just wondering...have Celtic made any official comment on the events that took place between themselves last Wednesday regarding the Arthur Boruc caution? I can't find anything on the official site and fear they are trying to let it slip under the carpet?
Also on this point...why aren't the media prodding Rangers to come out and state that its ok to bless yourself in the place of darkness?!
-
celticbhoy,
Thanks for the reply, I remember when we were looking to sign him there was talk about a midfield role.
He certainly is a quality footballer and it was great the way he took his goal against Chelsea - Terry and Carvalho.
One thing, should his first midfield role be at old trafford?
-
Chairbhoy
Very good point about his first time in midfiels for Celtic should not be at Old Traford.
I have tried to think about the balance in the Celtic team in general and have yet to come up with a team that I feel has balance.
Also we have to have a team which can play away from home and go for the vital away point, a team that is set-out to frustrate - this is why I would have loved to have seen a CB in at the transfer window which I would be sure the backgroud team at CP would have tried to do.
-
Noel, if Mrs. 90 STILL looks anything like that, I'd rather have a pint with her than with yourself. Maybe you can look after the Noelettes and send the good lady in your place.

Dubaibhoy, excellent question. I have no idea how much it costs to develop each young player, though to get the true figure, we should divide total cost of youth development, minus sales of youth players, by the number of players the youth system costs.
From memory the club spend £1.5m p.a. on youth development.
CHairbhoy 7:55, got me with that one.
Yes, I believe Caldwell was signed primarily as a holding midfield player.

A WORD FROM THE CAPTAIN
(Taken from the Celtic F.C Supporters association handbook 1954)
The last time I had the pleasure of contributing a few notes to the Celtic Supporters association Annual, I wrote of my football career up to my joining Celtic.
I did at that time honestly believe that I had a football career, but it was not until I joined my present famous club that I set seal on my hitherto uneventful sojourn in football.
I think I now know what it is to have a football career for I soon found out in joining Celtic just how honoured and privileged I was to be a member of the playing staff at Celtic Park. In my three short seasons I have been fortunate to gain honours which many great players have been denied though giving more years service.
I previously told you of the kind reception accorded me and all new arrivals at Parkhead, but since that I have found something else, a team spirit and a will to win that couldn’t be bettered anywhere.
This team spirit added to the great encouragement we received from our loyal supporters played a great part in our winning the league and Cup double after forty years.
I don’t think I need to tell you of the great pleasure and joy every single player at Parkhead derived from the past season. For me it is almost unbelievable. From the obscurity of non-league football to the captaincy of the world-famous Glasgow Celtic, the proud possessor of a Scottish League Cup, Coronation Cup badge, Scottish League Championship badge and a Scottish Cup badge, all gained within one year. None of these honours would have been mine without the wonderful co-operation of my teammates and the splendid encouragement given us by our club management. With that farsightedness that is characteristic of them the Directors decided to give the players an insight into Continental football by inviting us to see the England V FIFA and England V Hungary games at Wembley. It was indeed a great privilege and much appreciated. It is my sincere hope that if any lessons were learned they will be reflected in our teams performances in season 1954-55
I cannot like other Celts, claim that Celtic was my first love, but I know it will be my last and most enduring and when I have finished my career at Parkhead, and the time comes for me to hang up my boots, I sincerely hope I will have done a little to uphold the prestige, honour and tradition of Celtic Football Club.
Yours in Sport

Hi Paul,
Good luck in the upcoming legal battle, always remember Illegitimus non tatum corborundum. (I'm sure someone will correct me on that lol)
Mossend Irish Why should Rangers come out and say that, there are Rangers players both orthodox and R.C who bless themselves there is no problem with anyone blessing themselves as an act of faith, Mr Boruc was cautioned (wrongly in my opinion) for a range of gestures. While I hold my hands up to my clubs faults we do not run the Scottish legal system.
The Pookah :- I have to disagree with you on that one, much as I have a very poor opinion of football journalism in Scotland I think G.S is a fairly unbiased reporter in his writing. He may be different in his private life I have no idea but I would class him as one of the better examples of his trade.

Kittochbhoy,
How good is that, reading Big Jock's words from over half a century ago. I was priviledged to witness the Big Man's playing career, but I don't think he had a League Cup medal in 1954. Celtic's first win was in 1956, when they beat Partick Thistle after a replay. They retained it the following year, although the details of that victory escape me. Perhaps one of the Aul Hauns will recall the game.

To qoute the greatest manager of all time"i cannot claim that Celtic were my first love but, they will be my last and most enduring",what a marvellous testament, both to him and our own beloved Celtic, what magic was it that he felt within those walls to engender such a feeling in the heart of a man whose background was not of a Celtic nature?,he obviously felt no sense of sectarianist behaviour, nor did he encounter any bigotry within our establishment, surely,if he had he would not have come to such an understanding, reading this again triggers memories of both the unbelievable happiness he brought to us,a joy we simply could not have dreamt of when he came, unfortunately, these feelings are also tempered with the sadness i still feel at his passing,at the time of his death i could not bring myself to watch the funeral on television and i have still never been able to look at footage of the services in his honour,we were VERY fortunate to have such a man as this guide us to glory, god bless Jock Stein.

Mr Spiers it would seem is not to welcome at The Mint's place.
Scotland on Sunday October 16 2005.
Murray’s mind games and the Midas touch.
`In a rare interview Rangers chairman tells Moria Gordon how he ticks, his plans for rekindling Scottish football and his love of cold reading’
…`There is no need to look further afield than Murray’s opulent offices …for clues to what makes this man tick… In those oak panelled rooms are examples of all that he holds dear…fine art decorates the walls and somewhere invisibly-stored is a supply of wine from his vineyard. Even before reaching his inner sanctum the table in reception serves up insights as to what drives him. Alongside copies of business magazines and the latest edition of the Rangers News, there, atop a pile of newspapers, is the Glasgow based broadsheet which has been the foucs of so much of his anger in recent months. He still lets the paper into his world but those who work for him are no longer welcome.
…The club is more fiscally run and the risks, well less risky. With the chance of an extended European run this season he says that all extra monies earned will go to McLeish. It’s a promise and he tends to keep those.’

Glasgow Patter Parlør:
Bampot - An idiot, fool, or sometimes a nutcase. This is often shortened to bam, and any eccentric named Thomas risks being dubbed "Tam the Bam"
Ginger - Any carbonated soft drink, though particularly a bright orange fizzy drink called "Irn-Bru".
Bevvy - Any alcoholic drink. "Have you been on the bevvy??" Beverage.
Nip - To nip someone is to "pull" them; "A'm nippin her the night", also known as "lumbering". Can also refer to French kissing.
Cleek - To refer to picking up a partner of the opposite sex ie "Did you get a cleek?", cleek being the Scots word for a hook or crook referring to the linking of arms. A more colourful theory is that it originates from late night kissing couples on tenament doorsteps and knocking milk bottles to make a clinking sound.

Geezabrek - (Gie's a brek) Give us a break.

Edward @9:05pm,
I agree that Rangers do not run the Scottish legal system but I do feel that if Rangers are serious about trying to help promote an integrated society in Scotland then surely they should be trying to distance themselves from the bigots that raised the complaint against Arthur Boruc and they could do this by stating that they have no problem with any member of the Christian faith (or indeed any faith) publicly praying and blessing themselves and that they are in agreement with Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights(UDHR).
It is my belief that if the boot were on the other foot, then the Scottish media would have a field day and would refuse to let it lie until a public announcement had been forthcoming from Celtic.
My statement was as much a dig at the media as it was at Celtic and Rangers.
I believe all parties have handled this breach of human rights badly.
To all, Has there been any announcement from Celtic on the meeting with the police and CSA yet?

Apologies previous link should have read - Edward @9:05pm

Paul,
Lets hope for a great Bobo return and it will be excellent if El Presidente JFK fulfills his potential, then Caldwell can slot into the holding midfield role and some of our – agree the defence still needsstrenghtening but maybe our ’MAJOR FLAWS’ won’t look so bad! look
celticbhoy,
MO’N is a master at getting men behind the ball and frustrating teams – It could be a very risky for WGS to try and defend @ OT for 90 mins – I think we can cause them problems – Watford did!!!
Kittochbhoy @ 8:59 PM,
Excellent post = one thing!
'I did at that time honestly believe that I had a football career, but it was not until I joined my present famous club that I set seal on my hitherto uneventful sojourn in football.
Dont tell ma' dad - he still thinks *Albion Rovers is the pinnicle:-)
Has noticed Cliftonhill in the TV ad?
-
Polmik-
quality !

Chairbhoy At 9:53 PM,
thanks for the reply - you are of course right I for one am not sure how to approach the game at OT or infact the other away games I just don't think we a strong enough either to go for it or to defend for 90 mins.
-
Celticbhoy @9.09 :- Damn, who would have guessed that any one on this site would speak latin :-)
Noel90 :- That's the second thing we have agreed on tonight, the first being the babe status of Mr Gravesons other half :-)
Mossend Irish @9.44 :- I know I do tend to be slightly biased over Rangers but there is a lot of change has happened over the past years as the world changes and our team becomes more cosmopolitan we have had players from Jewish and Muslim faiths as well as R.C and Orthodox and while it may take a bit longer for some sections of the support to realise it the club is no longer the W.A.S.P ghetto it once was while it may take a bit longer than many would like things have changed greatly in recent years and the board have helped play a part in it. One day hopefully soon a player blessing himself will attract the same amount of comment blessing himself as he would in a Milan derby. On adopting the human rights act I'm not sure if that would help as anything other than a gesture, and as we all now know that could lead to court lol. This isn't an argument I agree with most of what you say maybe it's more we see different ways of achieving it.

Whilst we are remembering the late Great Jock Stein we should also remember that tomorrow is the anniversary of John Thomson's death on 5 September 1931.
The Celtic View recently were asking supporters for suggestions on the best way to pay tribute to John Thomson.
I am not aware that a decision has been reached.
As it is now 75 years since the tragic accident it would be fitting if something could be arranged this year.
I have a photograph (now framed) of John Thomson that was issued by the Sunday Post on 13 September 1931.
Above the photograph it reads "Scotland's Goalkeeper" and
under it :-
"That his side's goal might rest secure
On other things he kept his guard
His mind alert his body pure
His youth clean as a knight his sword
And when the last attack was sent
He gave them all with fearless soul
To leave as his life's monument
A goal - an undefeated goal."
Two great Celts, Jock Stein and John Thomson.

Chhhheers Noel your welcome
once I had read it I knew it should be posted,
Tom the Tim
Have read and re-read the original article and it states League Cup, however reading the article from Jimmy McGrory same season start and he uses quote " the league Cup which still eludes us"
I'll look into this further.

Paul,
I am sorry, but i believe you are wrong my friend.
Gordon, is an excellent tactican...and has thrown many people off the scent.
His new signings allow him to play 4-1-3-2 or his defensive CL formation of 4-2-3-1 which he will play at Old Trafford.
I expect him to play the defensive formation at Pittordrie for the first time.....
the midfield will be;
Just like Brazil.....
Two defensive midfield players ( with i the license to go forward)
Lennon Graveson
Nakamura Jarosik McGeady
VoH (on his own)
My hope is that through time, Miller replaces Nakamura in that middle right role. Perhaps Nakamura can play the Jarosik role.
Either way, we are in for a good ride.
Thanks for listening.

Very Strange?
Just noticed that the Graham Spiers entry on Wikipedia has been altered.
the new uncritical of the huns version
the origonal version which now doesn't exist
Hardly watergate but just shows you what some people will do to obsqure the truth.
Now, I wonder who could have done that?

mr angry
We've been down this road before. Wikipedia is a joke.

Paul 67 - someone in a wig is always willing to assist a fellow supporter.

Edward,
I have many friends who like yourself congregate on a saturday at the place of darkness and who i am pretty sure would agree and have agreed with your views. as you say we have different ways of achieving it i just wish Rangers as a club would stand up and denounce what has occured as i'm sure it would send out a stronger message, one that even the bigots on the celtic side would take notice of.
Ternar, surely it should be mcgeady rather than Naka in the 'hole'. This is where he used to play before breaking into the 1st team. He is currently playing out of position and has coped admirably! most of his assists(i can't stand this americanism) have been the product of his vision for the killer pass. Despite his small frame he is far more robust than Naka-how many times has mcgeady came out with the ball at his feet when he is the recipient of rough cahllenge or too?! the boy would be world class in this position-what defence could handle his trickery and movement in the middle of the park?!
Naka too is a fatastically gifted player and would do well in most games but alas i fear he is too light when it comes to pitting his wits against burly Centre-halves.

Kittochbhoy, 8:59, great words from Jock Stein.
Edward, Latin? There will be talk about you.
Ternar, 10:06, you might be right that Jarosik will play, but I am pretty sure that Nakamura will be left on the bench.
Malceye, my main event is later this month, just over the river, with the Principle wig.

Found this courtesy of Manchester CSC regarding John Thompson

Lennon, Caldwell in the same midfield you are having a laugh if we are going to get beat i would rather go with Caldwell at the back with Balde (McManus being crap) Lennon Graveson McGeady Nakamura in midfield.
-
Oops! this is the old version
The proper origonal version
actually that isn't it either. The origonal was far more critical.
nevermind

EdwardUrsus - Artur Boruc was not cautioned for a range of gestures. This is a myth fed by the spin brigade who have come forth on Radio 5 live and the letters pages of the Scotsman, Herald, Guardian & Times newspapers who claim that Boruc
- Made a BIG sign of the cross (oh dear)
- made a masturbatory gesture
- gestured come ahead
- spat
- swore
- er did something bad against Croatia (but we are not sure what)
Just give it a few weeks and Boruc will have urinated on, head butted, stabbed and robbed people in the Copeland Road stand.
On Friday I spoke to one of the few people who has actually seen the original police report.
There is no reference to ANY gesture other than a highly visible sign of the cross. The rest is a myth peddled to get the Crown Office & Strathclyde's finest off the hook for their shambolic handling of the affair.
P.S. - the R.C. you refer to in your posts stands for Roman Catholic and you, Mr Reasonable, are the latest in a very long line of Ranger5 fans I have known who can't even bring themselves to utter the phrase!
How dumb are the rest of you discoursing with this blatant fifth columnist and repeatedly being taken in by his garbage?
-
Mr Angry-
is this the Graeme Spiers page ?
