Celtic chasing more than points at Old Trafford

Now that we have the tricky business of winning our first game away from home out of the way, I feel a bit better about looking forward to the Champions League.

We are, of course, not ready yet.

The experience of nine Champions League away games (8 defeats and one glorious draw), should make it plain that even the best, the most experience and settled Celtic teams in recent years, have been out of their depth when playing away in this tournament.

If we are to avoid a fourth successive failure to progress from the group stage, the away record must improve this time around, but while Manchester will undoubtedly pull in the largest TV audience, a ‘must-see’ game if ever there was one, how Celtic perform in Lisbon and Copenhagen will be far more important in determining the outcome of the group.

The players, formation and manager, are not experienced enough at this level for many Celtic fans to expect a result at Old Trafford, but there is more than just points available to Celtic on Wednesday.

They need to learn what works and what does not work at this level.

They need to learn what players can cope with the pace, not to mention the pressure of playing Champions League football.

The abundance of midfield options available to Gordon Strachan needs to be narrowed down and tested. Will Nakamura spark or flop? Can Lennon, at 35, still close down quick enough? Will McGeady be able to create openings for Vennegoor of Hesselink?

I expect a few answers on Wednesday night, which will hopefully stand Celtic in good stead when they visit Lisbon and Copenhagen, a point would be a welcome, and surprising bonus.

    OttoKaiser from previous thread

I was there at the end of July.

Take a bus tour, hop on hop off to get your bearings on the 1st day as it's an absolutely massive city, then get an underground pass for the remaining days, very cheap and efficient.

Lots of street cafe's and plenty to see, all the hotels have tourist maps which have underground route's etc. and everything is easy to follow.

I fancy us to cause them some problems and maybe get a draw.

A lot will depend on how our defensive unit plays. If it plays well then I can see us coming more and more into the game and causing them problems.

    I predict a 1-1.

If any Celtic players need any motivation then WGS should just nail all these Old Trafford "legends" statements to the dressing room wall. I have heard so much crap spouted by them over recent days , some fanciful notions of pure ignorance ie. resting players etc , that they have indeed shown us disrespect. Its about time we shut some of these moronic clowns up.

Glasgowdave, I’ll not trouble the bookies with this one.

    Jackd from previous article.

I know people are getting onto Maciej because has scored only one goal in his last few games. Immediate and constant gratification is always preferable to form that peaks and falls.

He started slowly for Celtic last season, no goals in five, but then scored in all but six games in all competitions until the day the league was won.

    Here is the news:

Form comes and goes for all of them, even Jinky.

    Here is my view:

I will not dismiss a player who has just come off such a prolific season when his form drops.

    Here is the stats:

Maciej had played six and scored three. He does not take penalties or free kicks.

    Some slump.

Belfast Bhoy, from my reading, I do not believe that Uefa will allow the local problem in Portugal to impact Europe.

Unlike the recent Greek example, the Portuguese FA and judiciary are ‘on side’.

    Paul,
I have a bit more hope than you do for this one. I'm also with those that advocate bringing Jarosik in. This will be a night where we'll need players who understand the pace that we will face all over the park.

Also, I'd urge caution on the part of our fans. We are all used to playing ManU in friendlies, where it's ok to wear hoops in their sections. This might have a different tone to it, so I hope everyone is awake and aware.

How we fare on Wednesday night will be heavily dependent on whether we can keep the ball & keep our shape.

It's a pity that this game has come too soon for Maloney as he would be an asset down there for us with his change of pace, goal threat & ability to keep the ball.

I would like to see us use 2 big men up front in JVOH & Jarosik & basically play off them.

I'm a big fan of Zurawski, but i don't feel he is right for this game. Miller whilst full of running, cannot keep the ball & this is no use at Champions League level

  • At 11/09/06 14:09, Blogger TrueTim said…

    Very well put Paul.

I have always stated that the post match analysis of this game would be of crucial importance.

Possession will be the key for Celtic. If we can hold on to the ball for sustained spells then this will allow us to dampen the Man Utd attack.

The 'out' ball in the form of Miller.

The target man ball is a must in the form of JVoH.

Experience of playing at a high level is a must - the form of Gravesen and Jarosik.

Nakamura is certainly a risk - no doubt about that but his dead ball skills could win the game.

McGeady could be our trump card and it helps that the defensive side of his game has vastly improved this season.

Balde for the sheer presence of the man would be in my team with Caldwell. McManus was embarrassed by Man Utd reserves; I dread to think what Rooney will do.

Strachan's team is now picked in his head, he has been relishing this game since the draw was made.

Celtic will be outpaced and out muscled for the most part on Wednesday so it will be up to Gordon Strachan to outsmart
    his old mentor.

Just been talking to my r**gers supporting work colleague about this game. He asked how I see it panning out and, to be honest, I haven't a clue!

    I can see three scenarios...

    1) ManU think they just have to "turn-up" and we get a surprise win
    2) A battling draw.
    3) We get humped

Obviously I want the first, would be content with the second, and absolutely DREAD the third.

I am constantly chopping and changing which one I "think" is going to happen and my nerves are being torn apart!

and there's still two days to go!

(I would guess I'm not the only one feeling this way)

    Very much appreciated.

    Parkheadcumsalford?

As for the game, Kenny Miller wide right of a midfield 5 with Jarosik in for Naka. Big Jan up front holding it up.

Alternatively leave Naka in and hope Lubos Michel is true to form. Naka is great at turning his back to a player when he's on the ball and wins lots of free kicks when barged, even with 'harder' Scottish refs.

Realistically I think Wednesday's game is about the experience and education for the other CL games.

I'm looking for an encouraging performance to set us up for the next 2 games at home to Copenhagen & Benfica. These are the must win games.

I'd be happy enough with 6 points after the first 4 games. The we have a real 'Battle of Britain' with ManU at home. They may have qualified for the group stages by then. Then it's Copenhagen away where we hopefully win a CL away game.

Benfica dropping points in Copenhagen and at home to ManU would be a big help.

Two points - firstly, remember Barcelona, March 2004 (I think) 0-0, Marshall outstanding. We can do a job on Wednesday, its depends whether or not the team are up for the whole 90. I expect Naka and Vennegoor of H to shine.

Secondly, not so much a point as a question - where to go in Manchester on a competitive match day?

Watched Man Utd v Spurs at the weekend at the Man U defence were very susceptible when dealing with cross balls, in fact Defoe and Mido both missed glorious chances from crosses on more than one occasion.

If Mc Geady and Nakamura are on their game they should provide more than enough ammunition for JVOH to get on the end off, and hopefully, with some luck, we will be able to punish them.

Why, why oh why must we constantly read what Pat Crerand and Lou Macari have to say about Celtic's prospects? Both deserve little respect in my eyes for the their trade-in of Celtic in favour of Man United. Macari especially, after all that has passed between him and the club - April Fool signings and a lengthy court action - should learn to keep his mooth firmly closed. Hype up Man Utd all they want but do not even begin to make pronouncements about this Celtic team's strengths and weaknesses.

Based on the nega-Naka comments on previous thread, this may be controversial, but if we're going to play Naka in any games, it's the European ones I feel he would have more impact... Less physical than the Shot-Putters of Mid-lithunian and less hectic than the usual three parts fitness to one part talent than the average SP-Hell teams... more space to weave his magic?

Kenny Miller is used to playing up front on his tod and if ever there was a team made for his harrying style and defending from the front it's the languid defending of Rio & Wes Brown... I'm guessing this type of game was why we signed him.

However, whilst a draw would be a great result, I can't help feel that ManU will score at home, so we'll need a goal from somewhere to have a shout at any sort of result, and BigJan is getting the ball in the net...

If we're playing for a neggy-draw 4-5-1 with JVoH on the bench, but I'd prefer 4-4-2 and let the dice fall where they may...

    C'mon the Hoops :O)

    WHY ALL THIS NEGATIVITY?

    Barca

    Milan

All of these game we were given no chance.
We put Ajax out, Juve robbed us, but were punnished for it at paradise. Barca were put out the uefa cup and we got a great draw away from home in the CL. And we all remember Milan celebrating like they had won the whole comp when they held on for a 0-0 drw at parkhead, after we had played brilliantly in the sansiro.

I am not being blind here. This is a massive ask for us, but I would think it digracefull if a single member of the team pulled on that glorious hooped shirt with the thought that they were going out on the field to get a draw at best.

so why are the fans doing it?

    Big Joe at 2.13 has a point about the lad Sno. I liked the cut of his jib against Chelski. My plan of action would be to pack the midfield push them wide. They may have great players but they aint the best headers of the ball IMO. Push them wide force them to make long crosses, well not the kind that gets the likes of Boruc into trouble but you get the drift. Push them wide and sting them on the counter. Well thats my theory :}

Its too tempting to simply say we should have 1 up front and pack the midfield, as it is done to us every week in the SPL, and when done right, is effective in stifling us, as was the case on Saturday.

However, the teams who put 9-10 men behind the ball know how to defend like that, they do it often enough, they know where certain players will be at certain times, they have defended as a unit as a matter of necessity on the training pitch and during matches.

    We dont.

Asking players who are used to attacking all the time, used to having all the possession, used to doing everything except defending for long periods of the game, and going large portions of the game without the ball, to all of a sudden do all the things they are not used to, is asking for trouble in my opinion.

We can not allow Man Utd to have time on the ball and we can not allow Man Utd to build from the back, we need Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (someone come up with a nickname soon please!!) and Miller up there, chasing down the defence, forcing them to make a pass and not giving them time to pick their passes.
This is going to be absolutely crucial.

If we go 1 up front, yes we are loading the midfield, but we are giving the full backs the time and space to move forward and join the midfield and the time for the defence to pick out a pass into the path of a runner off the ball.

We need to play as far up the pitch as we can get them, there is no point in people saying the defence is not good enough, and the central defenders more to the point are not good enough, and then picking a line up that is going to put them more under pressure.

The defence will not be able to cope of we are boxed in in a confined amount of space, midfielders or wingers making off the ball runs into the penalty area will not be picked up, our defence has always had a tendency to ball watch, we need to avoid those scenarios if at all possible.

Anyone who thinks Celtic have a chance, anyone Celtic affiliated who has something remotely negative to say about Man Utd should turn their phones off and refuse to speak to anyone related to the media.

The more people i see write us off the better, hopefully the players are reading all of it, and becoming more convinced they have already won the game before it starts, then lets hit them right from the off.

If Strachans teams are as fit as he says they should be, lets go for it, not give them a second, put the frighteners up them from the off, it will disjoint them, unsettle them and we need to be clinical in exploiting any forced and unforced errors that come our way

Paul - like you I don´t expect any points from the Man Utd. games. Having seen them play three times this season I think they are a far better team than they have been for 3-4 years and their confidence is sky high.

A narrow defeat on wed. is as much as I dare to hope for and a morale bosting draw in the return leg would be a major bonus. Anything more than that would truly be an incredible achievement.

I don´t think this is being pessimistic, it is being realistic. We are not in Man Utd.´s class (or Arsenal´s or Chelseas) and that is a fact. The Seville team may well have won a game like this through their indomnitable spirit and fantastic attacking options (as well as the MON factor) but time has moved on and we are some way adrift of that standard at present. To argue otherwise is an act of blind faith - something that plenty contributors have on here (and I sadly do not).

Some on here are also criticising the ex-Man Utd. stars for "spouting rubish" - what exactly would you expect them to say? Crerard is spot on when he says he doubts if there is one Celtic player that would get a starting place in the Man Utd. XI. I don´t see that as a contentious statement, it is a valid and probably accurate points of view. Likewise, I doubt if Barcelona, Real Madrid or AC Milan would take any of our players into their teams - so what? Teams with poorer calibre players regularly cause upsets through a combination of "punching above their weight" (MON´s team), luck, tactical brilliance and the right attitude.

We have a chance, and that is what makes it such a brilliant game.

    Hail, Hail from Denia

And I'm still think that he's waiting for the big games, like this one, and doesn't want to play with average SPL teams. He will shine at Old Trafford. If rooney plays I would like to see gravesen or lennon next to him every second to provoke him. I'm looking for a red card for rooney there.

Forget being rational. We are gonny murder them. Allow yourself to believe that. We are gonny invade Manchester, show them what the Greatest Fans In the World are all about. Out sing, out dance and out shine anything they have got to offer. At Old Trafford the reds will be left wondering what hit them. First a wall of noise, then a mighty Dane followed by the flying Dutchman. They will be stunned and confused as Miller pulls them all roads. Half time will see Siwalex hastily regrouping to adopt a damage limitation exercise in the second half, so dont be too dissapointed if we only add 1 more goal to the three from the first half. Manchester doesnt know what is gony hit them.

    Paul,

It's a lovely day here in Salford, more like summer really. That's by the bye, of course. BlantyreKev was asking for some info as regards Manchester. Sorry haven't mastered the skill of putting maps or illustrations on the web but, if you're after entertainment to whet your whistle before the game and are coming down by train then the surrounds of Piccadilly Gardens (Manchester's George Square)has plenty to offer. If it's culture you're after, head for the Salford Quays (where a lot of Man U fans park for the game0 where the Lowry Centre and the Imperial War Museum North (don't be put off by the title: nowhere could be more anti-war)are places well worth visiting.

Personally, (and auld hauns won't be surprised) I tend towards those dreading Wednesday evening. I tend to concur with Paddy Crerand's assessment and hope to God he's got it totally wrong. By the way, while I can't stand Macari, Paddy Crerand was a Celtic great, who never wanted to leave Parkhead but was forced out.

The problem is, as Martin O'Neill was saying the other day, we play in the SPL. If we were in the EPL or something similiar we would soon be assuming our real place in the football world: Numero Uno.

Oh for a victory on Wednesday. It would be even better than Anfield and that was wonderful.

I would have Jarosik, if fit, and possibly Sno, too. I fear what the likes of Giggs and Rooney will do to our defense and, especially Lennon and McManus.

    Mick
    Naylsie
    the Skipper
    TG
    Naka
    JJ
    Aidinho
    Majic
    JVH
    Dusty.

    How many are'Celtic class'.
    Good question.
    What is Celtic class?
We have 1 point away from home in the CL.The game is this Wednesday;we'll have to go with what we've got.Go being the right word-play Dusty rather than Majic,as he will harry the MU back 4 and midfield.Play Aidinho-it's a chance to show what he can do on the big stage.
Swarm all over them like greenandwhite wasps.
O.K.,the players may not have'Celtic class'but there's no reason why they can't play with bags of Celtic fire.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight..

I'm sure I've posted this before.

In the old days, when the only footage you could see of many, many games came from the Celtic Film Unit, supporters' clubs used to put special events on and show matches.

Me too wee man. It's the Glasgow Celtic way. Optimism.

    Stevie S @ 2.46

    a wee "tactical" suggestion....

if Rooney is playing "in the hole" stick Lenny on him as a man-marker.

    Yes? No?

Just what I was thinking. I also believe that Lenny's 'nuisance value' could work well too. If that boy Rooney gets frustrated enough, he tends to do silly things. Referee-wise, he's already collecting a bad name in Europe, so it might work well for us.

Must admit too, that when all's said and done, Man U are still a good team and any points collected against them in this group will be a bonus.

Now for the controversial bit, because I know how he is revered... Because of that then, any small chance we get, we need to make it count. McGeady can't afford to be wasting balls up front. I counted at least twice on Saturday, chances when he should have released it when other players were free.

I don't think we can afford NOT to play him, (Double Negative? Aye, Right!) since his overall game has improved dramatically, but he needs to know that he WILL definitely be hooked if he wastes any more chances. Especially now that Maloney is coming back to fitness, and Riordan is waiting in the wings.

Naka will come good, it's Europe after all, not Kick&Rush, 10 men behind the ball SPL. That's the kind of player who CAN open up defences.

I'd still go 4-4-2 though. Miller & JVOH up front. McGeady, Graveson, Lennon, Naka in the middle, the usual back four & 'keeper.

My head says defeat, my heart says win, so I'll go for a happy medium... 1-1 draw (which I'll be more than happy with)

Fellow band-member is a Man U season ticket holder and is going to the game, so it'll be a long journey up to gig in Peterborough on Friday if we don't get a result.

In last years CL Rangers were playing in a group match when I was coming out of the Student Union to catch the train. A Rangers fan was walking in front of me and the ticket guy asked him the score. The Rangers fan told him and asked if he supported Rangers. The ticket guy replied:

WE CANT GO FOR A DRAW

We have a team capable of beating anyone on their day.

Very attack minded players all over the place... apart from the skipper, the goalie, and Mick, we have players that are all capable of springing attacks..... even saw Caldwell drive the full length of the pith and end up in the opposition box on Sat.

    SO WHY DEFEND?

Attack is the bet form of defence.

For the first time we have a genuinely young fast and fit team.
I was sick of being too slow to punnish teams on the break in the MON years.

We were the easyest team in the competition to play against. If all the players were fit then we knew who would play and how they would play. We were out smarted by teams that shouldnt have been able to compete with us...
    now its our turn...

    ATTACK!

3-1 to the bhoys! (a-la the Amsterdam arena!)

And how many of the hacks who slated WGS, Celtic and the players now consider the advantage gained, particularly by McManus in withdrawing from the Scotland squad, in playing in a full house at Old Trafford at the end of last season?

Paddy (3.57) - I don´t think it is a true or fair reflection on what we achieved in the MON years to say we we were the easiest team to play against. Our line-up might have been predictable but our results and performances were mostly commendable. Larsson, Agathe, Petrov, Sutton, McNamara were full of running and pace wasn´t bad either. We might not have been spectacular but it is a great disservice to the team to suggest it was slow and one-dimensional. Remember Lyon? Remember Juventus? Remember Blackburn? Liverpool? Barcelona? Of course you do, don´t let the final season take away from the glorious performances of the previous three years. We were good, damn good.

I just want to see us do what we did then....we were not fast and we were not the greatest indeviduals in europe (Larsson exception) but we were a great team that made others sit up and take notice.

    We played to our strengths.

But our strengths are vastly different from that era.
We are young fast and agile, and very much a flare team, not a big strong side, that bullied teams, and were masterfull at setpieces

    is that better explained?

Paddy - whew! I couldn´t believe you were sweeping aside our best team in 30 years as easy to beat so clarification appreciated.

I hope as this season develops we see a mix of MON and GS´s two styles. Youth and speed mixed in with aggression and spirit. The Bobos and Gravesens of this world are absolutely required at places like Ibrox and CL games where a bit of bullying is essential in order to get a result. Likewise a strong and tall presence at free kicks is a glorious asset. How many times was it the crucial difference for us in tight games? A Sutton, Mjalby, Hartson or Balde header and suddenly we were on top. Predictable it might have been but it was great to know we had a good chance of scoring every time we got a corner or free kick around the box.

I have a lot of hope in how the current team might progress over the coming months but I don´t think it is good enough (yet) to go out and ATTACK at Old Trafford with abandon. Playing it tight, harrying, cajoling, running after lost causes, snarling, nipping, harrassing are the types of things that get the underdog a result at Old Trafford. Let us do to them what lesser teams occasionally do to us - sometimes the team with the most fire in their belly, the team that want victory more than anything else can beat the odds. I remain to be convinved that GS can instill these magical qualities in our team - qualities he in fact possessed in abundance as a player.

    Here´s hoping . . .

Regarding Socialism, Capitalism and Cuba, wanted to say excellent post, very well written.

(Did you know that Cuba have been sending doctors all over the world to the worst areas, the areas others wouldnt go to, they have sent more doctors to India, Africa and parts of the Caribbean after tropical disasters than any other country in the world, and that Cuba offered to send a load of doctors to America, and bring their own aid and equipment after the floods, and the request was ignored...)

The Daily Ireland posted an excellent post on Cuba a month or so ago, well worth a read (before it heart breakingly closed!)

RE Celtic Soccer Crew, anybody who went to the games around the mid 80's must remember them..started off as about 40 boys jumping around with Celtic/Man U/Everton/Liverpool ski hats on.
Progressed onto pastel pringle jumpers etc.

They were the Celtic casuals and were never accepted by the main body of the support (who by the way were quite happy to have gang fights at the back of the Celtic End..remember that?)..I was never into it myself and scorned them for giving the club a bad name, In hindsight I have to say we were a bit harsh on them because us "normal" fans were getting chased all over Aberdeen, Motherwell etc. when we could have left it to the casuals to batter each other.

    thats ok Denia,

I just meant that, as much as we knew exactly what the lads would give us...the opposition new the exact same.

We are going into a game not knowing what the team will be, the tactics or the formation....so neither will they...

its up to us to use that to our advantage....
I think Caldwell in the holding roll with the skipper is a great shout. Gravesen playing further forward like sunday and Naka and Aidinho on the sides, Jan would be great for set pieces, but one upfront is what miller was made for. Its his game.
This is all dependant on Bobo coming back. the 2 wingbacks will have more space to bomb forward in support.

If not, big Jan and miller up front, would be my only change to the starting formation at Aberdeen.

    Paddy.

    Stevies,

in a word no - Lenny is too slow to mark Rooney.

    My team:

    Boruc

    Wilson
    Bobo - probably not fit
    Caldwell
    Naylor

    Aiden
    Jiri
    TommyG
    Pearson
    Naka

    JVOH

With Kenny M coming on if Naka doesn't cut it.

I think Lenny is too slow for this level, McManus is potentially too rash , and I'd like the option of Jiri arriving late in the box with a bit of height to support big Jan.

Also Gary C has been excellent in the last 2 games and gives us much more of a football from the back option than Mick.

Score 1-1. Kenny M. late equaliser.

I'm surprised at the number of fans who think Bobo and SM could start. Surely they cannot be match fit.

We really need someone to distract Wayne Rooney. It's a pity we did not sign a 60 year old hooker. (Sorry wrong sport, that's rugby!)

Ironically if ManU drop points their players will not be considered ManU class.

I just get the feeling that Celtic will enjoy being the underdog and not playing in the high pressured goldfish bowl of the SPL. I'll settle for a good performance.

I'm hoping two things. first that your joking, and second that GS does not use this site!

Lenny should have been turfed long ago. His little fairy steps will be meat and drink to a hungry Rooney who has not played for a few games and will be biting at the bit.

Lenny is an arrogant drain on the wage bill and is one of the poorest captains we have ever had. At 35 it is criminal he is still part of the clubs plans.

Im enjoying the optimistic predictions on here, but football is a game of confidence and if we get spanked by an in form United side it could scupper the whole campaigne. For that reason alone
, I would like to see us play a negative ugly game and make them lose their composure because they have the potential to pull our pants down and give us a good 'ol public flogging from which we may never recover.

Neil Lennon is 35, this is true, and he is not as effective as he once was. What is more, I hope he is forced out of the team this season by a bright prospect, but I am absolutely sure he will have an important role to play for us before May.

    keg at 5.46pm,

Your comments on Neil Lennon do you no credit whatsoever.

You may not like him or appreciate the job that he does, and you obviously don't, but it is an unarguable fact that Neil Lennon has been one of our most consistent players over the past six years.

He has been a vital part of a team that, but for one penalty and three fateful minutes, would have won six League titles in a row.

He has been one of the most important individuals who has ensured that Celtic have gone from being a club who were required to play in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Cup to second seeds in the Champions League.

One day Neil Lennon will leave Celtic. Everybody does. When he leaves he can go with his head held high for few people have given as much to the Celtic cause in recent years.

Your comment that he is "an arrogant drain on the wage bill" serves only to show that you know absolutely nothing about the man.

4:06 PM, Paddy - where did you get the info on Carrick's injury - I can't find find anything?

    5:59 PM, Paul67 - Paulo67 Coelho?

MU game - I can't wait. Without Ronaldo I don't see much flair on their right flank so it's going to be a very busy night on our right side. We could be facing Richardson, Giggs & also Saha loves to go into the inside left channel. I think Naka will struggle defensively with that but he is our best bet to string moves together & play keep-ball. Swap Naka & Aiden - with Aiden & Mark Wilson taking turns to force Giggs to backtrack at every opportunity?

Stephen Pearson beside/behind TG with a brief to follow Scholes?

Jan up-front with Kenny to start - we should look to get Jan into situations where the MU full-backs mark him (as some tried with us when Ross Wallace played at LB last year). Penalty spot crosses are a waste of time - vd Sar will take them all.

Back four picks itself. When Rooney drops into the hole Caldwell needs to go with him - if we drop off we are dead. Ajax were great at exploiting the #10 position but they were equally good at stoppinjg it. Danny Blind used to 'sweep' in front of the other defenders - frequently intercepting the pass or even denying the option.

Gordon provided the analysis at the WC when England laboured against Trinidad & Tobago. Basically when England were in possession the T&T front two covered the fullbacks & they left Ferdinand & Terry in possession. Result - utterly preduictable 'distribution'. I wonder if he will try something similar on Wednesday.

They tonked Fulham first day of the season & reports were glowing (red presumably). Since then (without Rooney & Scholes) they have beaten Charlton & Watford away (they occupy positions 16 & 20 respectively with a combined 4 pts from 8 games). By all accounts MU were then very fortunate to beat Spurs at the weekend. They now welcome back two great players who have played 2 EPL games between them this season & they miss Ronaldo who has played in all 4.

My friend. What have I done to deserve such praise? Anyway I've been a strong Roxy Music fan for many years, probably I'll recieve grief from the guys on here for admitting that! I also enjoyed Country Life very much but enjoyed STRANDED a little more.
Where will you see the game on Wednesday?

    EDB

P.S. I do not understand why Artur is not NT goalkeeper.

Why can't we get a resutl against Man U on wednesday? They have only played well once this season and that was 4 weeks ago after going 3-0 up in 15 minutes.

On saturday against a pretty average looking spurs side they were there for the taking, especially from crosses into the box.

I'll be very very surprised if we don't play 4-4-2 with Miller asked to run his socks off as the first line of defence. Our first 11 picks itself until Jarosik, Balde and Maloney return to full health and fitness.

If we play defensively we will invite one of the most dangerous teams in europe on top of us. If we play to contain but compete using our own weapons we have a chance of a geting result.

Naka, Graveson and big Jan were bought for these games. It's time to let them loose

    Meant to say...

put yourself in Macari and Crerands shoes, what would you say?

Exactly what they are coming out with. They are employed by Man U, they are comparing Rooney with Miller, Ronaldo with McGeady, Ferdinand with McManus.

    What would you say?

    Of course, we know better!

its been a wee while since i posted, but gee whiz, the nerves are starting already, the guys at work are smiling, the good lady is looking forward to seeing stan ?????(havent the heart to tell her) im just going to say he shaved his head.....

i agree with you paul, if we lose, its not the end of the world, so it is a no loser situation, but i dont think it is for WGS,

huge dilemnas for the wee man, if venny doesnt get signed, we play 1 up front, now its different,

i want him to show some gumption and play miller up front ALONE, and then bring on magic and venny,
i totally believe he will play 5 in midfield, but what 5 ???? lenny, tam, aidean, pearson, naka or jiri,

our esteemed manager has many choices, i hope he is strong, but he deserves the right to pick his side for the moment, but that wont please some,

my young lad has been an avid man u fan since cantona, we watch all the man utd games we can, and we both believe that only 2 players can make the difference, giggs, and shrek, can wgs play naka on the right, with giggs being a huge threat, ????

one thing we both believe is that young wilson will be a match for him, (this is the coming of age, for him, the night he is suddenly worth 5 mill) if he could hold robben, he can hold giggs,

as for shrek, we both believe he is the best player in the world, just our opinion, so what do you do ???? lenny at his fastest couldnt get close to shrek, i was amazed the day he caught henry !!! the boy has some engine, even if he looks heavy, so for once i/we cant see how you stop him, but with ronaldo out, the threats are limited, so we have a chance, WE HAVE A CHANCE, cos we are celtic, we all know we have a chance,

ach just play 442 and go for it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDB you must know why, for sure.
Good news are that Polish National TV decided to show this game live. So they admire Celtic and our countryman.
Why Boruc is not our NT goalkeeper? To be honest with you I realy don't know. It's actually Flamish mish-mash. I can imagine what Boruc sais to himself after Borucgate and games without him in Poland. "They don't need me here , and they don't need me there, so it's time to proof and show what I'm worth" That's of course not to much serious devegation from me. But I think this could be the part of the truth.

    To the music fans:
Did you see the clip of common concert of Eric Clapton, George Harison, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and others playing "Tulsa time"?

For no reason that I can put my finger on I'm completely relaxed about Wednesday.

We're in the perfect position that no-one is expecting us to do well whilst we do have a number of players capable of causing Utd problems.

I'm consoled by the thought that Gordon Strachan has taken much worse teams to Old Trafford and not been embarassed

Just wondering if anyone had a ticket and a helicopter that could come and pick me up from Southampton about five O'clock.

I would prefer a ticket for the Stretford end however, I'm willing to make do with a seat in an executive box.

As for the helicopter the R44 made by the Robinson helicopter company is my prefered mode of flight, as long as it's green of course.

    Thanks in advance Mr A

Nearly forgot could you please get back to me within the next hour as I am expecting to be taken to the theatre tonight as someone is bound to be unable resist the invitation I placed outside the chemist's this morning.

This isn't about beating Man Utd, its about stuffing it to that Old Sod whose love of his homeland (more particularly wasteland in Govan) grows by the day. COME ON THE BHOYS !!!
