Celticico Gravesen faces stiff test in the North

Having lost their first away game of the season at Tynecastle, and the secured a miserable point at Inverness, Celtic have questions to answer against Aberdeen in their third away game of the season at Aberdeen today.

Away from Glasgow, Celtic have been bereft of a recognisable attacking plan and conviction.

Aberdeen are unlikely to be compliant. A win will see them go to the top of the league, a huge incentive for Scottish football’s perennial under-achievers.

All eyes will be on Thomas Gravesen, but when Roy Keane, the last midfield Celticico made his debut against Clyde in January, the lower division team did not read the script.

Gravesen is likely to find his debut every bit as difficult as Keane; even Celticico’s need some time to settle.

    Podium - ya beauty!!!

Having just watched the TG press conference, I have to say how impressed I am with the lad. His answering of the questions was perfect in every department and brings much needed confidence.

Hard game today, 3 points today definately more important than OT

    Morning All,
Really looking forward to the game, can't wait to see Gravesen and to get another look at BBJan. It will be a difficult game today, especially since we've not one an away game all season, but I think we'll have enough quality to get through this one. As I said during the transfer window, players of the Gravesen and Hesselink ilk will be the difference between drawing games at Inverness or Pittodrie and winning them.

    whitedoghunch,
McManus and Caldwell are both doubtful, so I would expect us to concede if we have a makeshift defence. Scott Cuthbert has been brought up to the squad so if he plays it's his big chance today, and Boruc is likely to return.

Seriously, I just hope Tommy's actions replicate his words.....IMPRESSIVE.

Yes three points are vital today but I think a draw at least is necessary on Wednesday to build confidence and set a momentum. We do not want weekday hangovers affecting weekend performances.

We are also guilty of over respecting Manure. Yes they have some good players...but so do we.

    C'mon the hoops!

A few years ago Celtic told all photographers at the ground that they would no longer be allowed to take images unless they passed the copyright to Celtic so the press guys stood firm and said fine we wont take any photo's then !

    Hi Paul,
I know this is from the previous article but I've just read it catching up on things after a very inebriating night at a charity fun night in memory of a friend who died recently, you remark that the sun is burning up it's gasses is very true but as it will take roughly another four billion years (assuming the sun like other stars stays on the mainstream) I think our species will be long gone before we need to take the heat death of the universe into account.
AddisAbaba Like you I believe we need to get off planet to ensure species survival (shoemaker/levy striking Jupiter) however until someone finds a way to circumvent the limits imposed by relativity then the stars are out of the question. Where I disagree with you is that eventually a worn out earth will be left behind as the last human leaves, long before we can achieve that either glaciation or vulcanism (or even a comet strike as the dinosaurs found out)will have swept the planet clean. We may be able to render the planet uncomfortable for ourselves but we can't ruin it, it's constantly (though slowly) renewing itself.
On a totaqlly unrelated matter, today at Aberdeen, my opinion a Celtic team misfiring a bit when away and new players trying to gell with the team, a one all draw with other results moving Rangers to the top of the league :-)

I am indeed, and thanks for responding. I was anxious to know that you had read it.

There's a train of thought that says you should never discuss 2 topics in a pub, Religion & Politics. A train of thought that, over the years, I've come to understand to my cost.

We on CQN have managed to cover both in the last 2 days, and I suppose it's easier to exaggerate an argument from behind the safety of anonymity and a trusty keyboard.

Just a little footnote. The friend who I spoke about last night, who is on the opposite political persuasion to me, is as close to me as a brother to this day. We're both Irish Catholics from the West of Scotland and we both moved to England together, and we still live close to each other 25 years later.
He was lucky enough to play for Celtic Boys Club though, I wasn't.

  • At 09/09/06 11:18, Blogger Paul67 said…

Edward, hope you had a fine night.

True, humanity will be long gone before the sun, which is one reason I cannot take long term worries for the species seriously. If we accept we are doomed, what is there to worry about?

Sorry for being out of thread but really have been busy and this is the first chance I got.

I know this is a little late but if you guys don’t mind I’d like to post it in the hope that it does some good.

    Before I begin,

I’ve been busy at work all week and have not been able to keep up with all the different posts on all the different sites so apologies if I am repeating what may have already been posted by another.

Paul was right then. I didn’t post when you did your article on, “the songs we sing causing offence to others”. I thought it may have been a false start. Now it seems that you were indeed correct and EUFA/FIFA may take action against our club. (If we are found to be bigoted or racist in the songs that we sing.) Apologise for having doubted, but again, in doing so, I never jumped in all guns blazing although I was tempted.

Mr. Quinn I think you and the rest of the board on which you serve are doing a great job. Glad to see though that even the ex chairman or whatever of the Bank of England can make himself look a right dick with only two sentences.

Like all other Celtic supporters I wish only the best for my club. No Celtic supporter would knowingly perpetrate actions and deeds that would consequently adversely affect our club.

No Celtic supporter would indulge in irresponsible behaviour knowing that it may mitigate the deduction of points from whatever table.

I do not believe that the vast majority of the Celtic support find songs that commemorate actions and deeds of the Republican Movement in Ireland to be repugnant and, or offensive.

Individuals maybe. Quite a few possibly, and if they do find Republican songs offensive, that is their prerogative and you’ll get no argument from me. But they are not the majority.

I know Celtic supports of many nationalities and from a great diverse range of occupations. Engineers, Lawyers, Pipe Fitters, Teachers, Policemen (even SB), members of the Armed Forces, Company Directors, Brick Layers, CEO’s etc. etc. Most if not all have Republican music of one form or another in their music collections. As a matter of fact in over forty years of following Celtic your Appeal is the first I have ever heard of a Celtic supporter finding Republican songs offensive. I’m not saying there aren’t any Celtic supporters out there who would agree with your evaluation, not at all: I just haven’t met any.
The Celtic supporters that I know to a person irrespective of their nationality have a fondness for Irish Republican music and history. There may well be a bigot or two amongst them Back in the seventies and eighties I would have classed myself a bigot. I cannot ever recall having a conversation with any Celtic supporter at any time, any where, which would lead me to believe him a racist. Never.

The Republican music that you find offensive is often a celebration of peoples in pursuit of nothing more than legitimate freedom. Free from oppression and persecution by an occupying army. A lot of those people paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Would you not agree, that somebody, prepared to offer his cause, his life, by starving his body of all sustenance until death, is deserving of respect and admiration, whether you agree with his cause or not.
My own Grandfather was hunted throughout the hills of Kerry. He too died of malnutrition and exposure. He was hunted to his death because he was a member of the IRB. My Grandmother too suffered at the hands of the occupying forces. She was subjected to tortures resulting in her losing both her eyesight and the child she carried in her womb. She too, died a lonely and poor death. Her sons left Ireland and my dad settled in Glasgow and god how he loved Celtic. Celtic the football club. Celtic the family and Celtic the Spirit. Indeed a holy trinity. It was he who explained to me back in the sixties why Celtic supporters sing songs in celebration of Irish Republicanism. It annoys me now that the new breed of supporter thinks it offensive or not PC to sing these songs.
I personally don’t believe they have any place in football and have held that opinion for the last ten years. Even though for the preceding twenty years I quite happily sang them and was happy in my ignorance.
Certain events Omagh, Warrington amongst others made me look at things in a different way. Friends I knew from the armed forces, told me of their grief and their losses and how when songs of Republican nature were sung at Parkhead they’d question their loyalties.
I lived and worked in England for several years. Whilst there, over the years, I have talked football with hundreds and hundreds of supporters of various clubs. To a man they all said they’d love to see Celtic play in England. They all cited the atmosphere that the Celtic support creates. Just about every one of them had a reservation. They took exception to songs in celebration of the IRA and they really took exception to songs that were derogatory of the queen. In one sentence they’d be all for us and then on reflection maybe not. Yeah you’re okay but don’t bring the baggage.
You don’t have to agree with their sentiments but at least have the decency to see it from their point of view. Warrington is next door to Manchester. On Wednesday night there are going to be many relatives of the deceased from the Warrington bombs present at Old Trafford. Are we as a support insensitive to their grief that some of our songs can provoke. I ask you to pause and think how you would feel if the roles were reversed. I don’t think any decent living human being would intentionally inflict hurt and grief on the innocent. Some of our songs are capable of inflicting such pain. I only ask, please, give it some thought.

I will hold my hand up now and admit that I am republican of mind. Not just Irish Republican, Republican. I enjoy the music and will quite happily sing it at home or at a gathering of like minded people. I am neither a racist nor a bigot. I have friends that span every continent. I have friends who frequent Ibrox. I don’t feel any influence what-so-ever from the music I might choose to listen to as to whom I will or will not socialise with.

I am aware that there are several Republican songs which also celebrate deeds that could only be described as viscous and obscene in its execution. I have never heard these songs sung at Celtic FC matches. Home or away. These songs are offensive if publicly aired.

Sean South, The Merry Ploughboy, Fine Girl You Are, The Soldiers Song along with others were sung at Parkhead by Celtic supports before the likes of YNWA or FOA. Nobody from the board ever complained back then. After 40 years it is almost accepted practice.

So what has changed now? This wouldn’t have anything to do with a sponsor’s objection, potential or practicing, by any chance.

I believe EUFA are monitoring us as a support and if you too believe this then we must behave accordingly. We cannot knowingly ignore the warning.
My only problem, Mr. Quinn. What songs exactly is it that EUFA are likely to find offensive. I find it hard to believe they can take offence at the likes of the Soldiers song or the Fields of Athenry. So please if you wish the supporters to desist you must first tell them categorically what the problem songs and chants are.
I am not trying to tell anybody what they can or cannot sing, or say for that matter. I am merely advocating caution and reflection upon our collective sensitivity. By hurting Celtic we only hurt ourselves.
I, for one, without compromising my republicanism or beliefs one iota, would comply with any well meaning directive. It would make it easier if I could understand the directive.

    KTF & YNWA

    Kitalba,

    Another great post.

IMO an honest and reasonable attitude to take to this situation.

Living in england, it's a bit embarrasing to listen to some of the songs WE sing, me included.

You're right though, we should be proud of our heritage, passion and republican beliefs.

Isn't it all about the advancement of the human spirit over thoughtless beauracracies?

I'm proud of where we have come and what our people have done, you're own families history tells us this.

Let us all try and be above this and take our great club forward into the future, but NEVER forget or be proud of our heritage.
