Copenhagen success over Benfica will suit Celtic

The early start to the Bank of Scotland Premier League gave Celtic preseason problems, but when you look forward to the Champions League fixtures, it might not be such a bad thing.

When Benfica open their Champions League campaign on 13 September away to Copenhagen, they will have played their first league game only three days earlier (their opening game against Gil Vicente was cancelled). Copenhagen, by contrast, have already played six league games.

Benfica then play Manchester United in a crucial home game only two days after their third league game of the season, on 26 September.

They have an away game, their fifth league game of the season, two days before travelling to Celtic Park on Tuesday 17 October.

Celtic will have six league games under their belt before playing their first Champions League game and will have played 10 before facing Benfica in October.

I cannot look beyond Benfica in this Champions League draw. Without offering disrespect to Copenhagen, or too much respect to Manchester United, I am sure that one, and only one, of Celtic or Benfica will qualify.

Both clubs will want to pick points up in Copenhagen, and in only having played one league game before travelling to Denmark, the late start to the Portuguese championship has not done Benfica any favours.

Let’s hope Copenhagen get an early result.

Best of luck to Kenny Miller and Gary Caldwell today. I hope KM gets a hat-trick.

I will be wearing my 1960's Denis Law No.10 replica Scotland top (with pride). I am a very proud Scottish Celtic supporter and I would love to reach a major Championship finals again.

Hail! hail! the Scots (including those of Irish ancestry) are here!

Copenhagen can't be discounted either. We will do well to leave there with anything more than a point. And I'd be happy to come away from Lisbon with a point. The key will be in winning our home games.
Good luck to Scotland today. Pound on Kenny Miller for first scorer!

Nice side step there. Yes, on the pitch, Stan was a moaner and a pleader. In Roy Keane, these were seen as positive virtues attesting to a perfectionist attitude. Stan was never known as a Sulky Bulgar or a Torn Faced Transylvanian until his transfer request.

I feel he was shown less respect than he deserved as a departing player who, like John Hartson, spoke only good things about the club as he left. I would contrast that with Chris Sutton, a true complex character, who has never spoken about us and seems to have the Stevie Archibald attitude to teams i.e ultimately it's every man for himself.

Or Jackie Mac who bad mouthed the money on offer as he left after a testimonial windfall?

I promised not to post on players who had left but I do wish we would show due respect to a fine club member of 7 years standing who handled himself for most of the time he was here.

Any pronouncement from UEFA yet regarding Portugese Football participation in international tournaments?

Can Benfica be thrown out at this late stage?

If not I would have thought a draw between our rivals would be the best result. A good result for Copenhagen (a win) would increase their confidence and then it might be a four horse race. I think we are all offering far too much respect to Manure.

My old man is a Manure supporter. Loved to be able to get one over on him.

Did a lengthy post on the transfer window, blog fell over and lost it.

In summary, very pleased with the transfer window. When looking at the 8 players in against 8 players out we have great value for money, plus money left over for January if needed.

I dont like over analysing other teams results, especially in the first round of games in the CL. Can we, for once, be masters of our own destiny?

Also, does anybody know what happened to the Benfica squad during the transfer window was it weakened. I know the young midfielder Fernandes is out on loan. Did Simao move?

Sorry guys, but the international break barely registers on my richter scale. Though i do enjoy watching the top teams battle it out at the finals.

I am sorry to say that the equivalence that you deplore was demonstrated by Nicky Campbell in a short piece in the Guardian on Thursday. The gist of the article was to question why Mr Le Guen should need to declare that he was purely a nominal Catholic who only attends church on 24th Dec "because it is a family tradition".However in the opening sentence he says "After Rangers brush with Uefa and Celtic`s Arthur Boruc`s brush with the law for crossing himself,it`s clear that the Old Firm will be scrutinised as never before.I think anybody reading that that could ony conclude that both "offences" are comparable and Nicky Campbell ,probably inadvertently,is as culpable as Mr Le Guen in sidestepping the sectarian issue.

You are right Paul, our Benfica games will decide who go thru with MU. When looking at the draw, particularly after our signings the last week, whe have to look at 4 points and six points from Benfica and Copenhagen respectively. With a minimum of 1 point from the MU games(i think we will get 3, minimum) its in the bag.
If Benfica drop 4-5 points before losing to us at CP then mentally it will be tough for them and give us the upper hand, particularly if we can get something at OT in our first game, which I believe we are capable of.

  • At 02/09/06 12:37, Blogger FirsbyHoop said…

I agree that our games with Benfica should decide the group.

We must take six points from Copenhagen, although we write them off at our peril. Both Benfica and ourselves will be hoping for four points from our head-to-heads, although we can't both get it!

A win at home to ManU would be absolutely brilliant. They are the overwhelming favourites, but remember they didn't get out of the groups stages last year so they might not be as unbeatable as they appear at the moment.

Six from Copenhagen, four from Benfica and nothing from United should see us through. That doesn't seem out of the question to me.

    Paul,

I would concur that I expect Man Utd and either Celtic or Benfica to make it through but I would never use the words "I am sure" as you just did. There have been freak results before where the no. 1 seeded team did not qualify and there's no harm in treating every game in CL group stage 1 qualifying as equally daunting. Yes, with my head, I would want Copenhagen to damage Benfica in match 1 and I would accept a narrow defeat at old Trafford as no more than we had a right to expect. But when the matches come round, my head will switch off and my heart will take over; I'll have no expectation other than a Celtic win in Manchester and no interest in the other result until that is achieved.

Some time afterwards, my head /brain might make itself known to me again and I'll accept realism but I've never found realism to be a pleasant companion at a match against a higher ranked team.

Newarthillbhoy 12:31, I do not expect Uefa to throw Portuguese teams out of Europe at this stage. While on paper, a draw looks a good result when our rivals area playing, I think a point will be a good result for either Celtic or Benfica in Copenhagen.

My preference would be a Copenhagen win against Benfica.

Compare the seven year itch of Stan to King Kenny.

I wish Petrov all the very best for the rest of his career. He gave us sterling service and some wonderful moments. May the wind be always at his back. Appreciation of Stan will need further reflection. His departure was softened by purchase and profit, so fair play to all concerned.

Kenny Dalglish, another matter entirely. A Celtic team was mortally wounded by his departure in 1977 as Celtic ignomoniously surrendered to the fast buck. The 76/77 team could have brought us back to the level we were used to three or four years previously. The rest is history. The spin put on his departure (new challenge, etc...) hardly covered the club's lack of ambition. Kenny, like David Hay before him, was given up(on)too easily by the custodians of our club.

Things have changed. The club is a million-times better managed today. Stan goes, Graveson arrives. Who took Kenny's place for season 77/78?

Comparisons are statistical by nature, and therefore can be used to support any argument.

There there can be little argument about the ambition of the club now.

Good luck to Ireland and Scotland, in that order!

    Onwards Celtic!

    Druiddude,

Exactly. Catholics in Scotland have long been told, and not just by the Establishment, that we should keep our faith out of sight.

I've a lot of time for Nicky Campbell as whenever football is discussed on his 5 Live breakfast show, he frequently mentions Celtic in a positive light. I haven't read his article but it sounds to me that he has unthinkingly fallen into the usual "don't be overtly Catholic because some people don't like it" trap.

The Scottish Executive have taken real steps to combat sectarianism in Scotland, but they miss the point. They treat anti-Catholic and anti-Protestant sectarianism as equal problems. How can that be when Catholics make up less than 20% of the population?

I'm not denying that we have bigots on our own side, but as the minority, bigotry against Catholics is a much more widespread and dangerous phenomenon. It's not as bad as it was when I was growing up in the '70's, but it still exists.

The message has to be drummed home - Catholicism is the faith of 1 billion people worldwide. We are proud of our faith and will not hide it.

I have to disagree with you on this one Paul. In my opinion we are looking for a draw in the games we are not involved in, regardless of who. In previous years too many draws has been the downfall of teams. Any game ending in a draw can be looked upon as 2 points dropped for both teams, and until the latter games when the bigger picture begins to unfold i will be hoping for draws in any games not involving Celtic.
Who would've bet Man Utd finishing 4th in the group last year?
They are not unbeatable and i have a sneaky feeling there main objective this year is the premiership.
I think we are in the most unpredictable group in the draw, something i am happy with as i have more hope now than i did a fortnight ago.
Expect the unexpected, points will be dropped all over the group!

The huddle was a well used team bonding technique in both American volleyball and basketball in the 60's. It would be applied at regular time out breaks in both these games and was not a one off event as at Parkhead. The purpose would be to reunite the team after a break in play. You can see a similar thought process at work in penalty shoot outs where takers link arms before and after..
A sports psychologist called John Sayer introduced it to Scottish Volleyball in the 70's, perhaps even the late 60's. I remember it being ridiculed by footballers f my acquaintance as a 'girlie" thing. It took a strong character like Tony Mowbray to introduce it to Celtic in the 90's.

What i don't know is whether Boro used it when he was there or whether Hibs use it currently.

    No Bread

Going back t o last night’s debate and your post of this morning you state, “Mid table SPL (EPL) clubs make far more money than Celtic and have more net cash available.”

I wonder if you could expand on this.

I understand turnover is not a measure of available spend, but it is a measure of how much money “clubs make”. The following table illustrates the total turnover for the premiership up to 2005.The top 4 clubs financially are the top 4 clubs on the park. Is this a coincidence?

    Club 2004/05 2003/04 2002/03 2001/02

Coventry City Football Club (Holdings) Ltd 8.686 7.888 14.500 16.446

The following table illustrates the top earners across Europe. Again is this a coincidence that the top 10 are recognised as the most successful?

    Rank Club Income (£ mn)
    1 Manchester United 171.5
    2 Real Madrid 156.3
    3 AC Milan 147.2
    4 Chelsea 143.7
    5 Juventus 142.4
    6 Arsenal 115.0
    7 Barcelona 112.0
    8 Internazionale 110.3
    9 Bayern Munich 110.1
    10 Liverpool 92.3
    11 Newcastle United 90.5
    12 AS Roma 72.0
    13 Celtic 69.0
    14 Tottenham Hotspur 66.3
    15 Lazio 65.8
    16 Manchester City 61.9
    17 Schalke 04 60.5
    18 Marseilles 58.3
    19 Rangers 57.1
    20 Aston Villa 55.9

I understand that when the overhead is subtracted from the turnover then the true profitability of the company is shown, but are you telling me that Fulham, Charlton, Blackburn etc with a much smaller turnover have football operations that are substantially less than our own and consequently have a much greater level of spend available. This might indeed be the case.

I freely admit I do not understand this subject in any details . I would be most intrested for any of the more financially astute posters to put some meat on the bones.

But my general layman’s point is this. If Celtic currently lie 13th in European football on the income league. Why are we not seen as the same on the park?

I caught an old 30 minute concert of Gilbert O' Sullivan from the 70's on BBC3 a couple of weeks back. What impressed me was the quality of the lyrics on some songs. He took great care to rhyme and scan like an old fashioned lyricist.

Unfortunately, his shyness in performing and his ridiculous appearance as a midget 1930's American golfer got in the way of all that.

Is he still writing? No use asking the Kerrang boys. They'll think Stairway to heaven was poetry.

How many of these successful clubs are where they are with dodgy money and are dependent on guys international police forces and tax authorities are chasing. What happens to any of the teams when Big Boy gets bored and walks away? Whats happening right now with West Ham? Would you want that at parkhead? 'Success' at any price? Or is there a smarter way built on sounder principles? Even if it takes a bit longer to get there.

It won't matter when we play them, but can anyone enlighten me as to ManU's CL performances in the last few years?

I can't understand why they are still a Pot 1 team. Their win in '99 is no longer included in their co-efficient and I don't remember them getting past the quarter-finals aprt from that one time.

I don't think it would be a disaster oif we took no points from them, but let's remember a large part of their aura comes from being a "Premiership team" - a ludicrously over-hyped league they haven't won since Beckham left.

I'm suggesting that too many take their eyes off the damage that chasing 'success' can bring. If you lose the ethos and tradition of the club in the process, is that 'success'?

At best, its a team game supported by like-minded, committed supporters (with many various opinions).

Have you 2 joined the revisionists?

Of course not! :-) I look at things objectively and one day of misery after a fall out doesn't a disruptive influence make. However, there is no doubt that Stan needed a lot of man management. He wasn't a typical happy go lucky character and could never be described as a "happy guy". This isn't a criticisim however - was Roy Keane a happy guy or a complex character? frequently this sort of personality is welded into the psyche of that rare breed called "winner".

7 years this player spent with us. He had one sour faced day and a so-called disruptive transfer request ( I'll take £6.5m- £8m of that disruption anyday).

Stan was rarely happy. Moreover he was noted for being difficult and hard to handle. I think it's a positive as it was based on a ceaseless quest for perfection rather than because he was a malcontent. In striving to not be revisionist we must not invent a "happy go lucky" Stan either. He needed a kid gloves and needed a special approach.

Stan stood up to my prediction and said nothing but good things about this club when he left. He does not deserve that negative label. He was a positive influence on our dressing room for 6.99 years and should be remembered and celebrated as such.

I didn't want him to leave. I wanted him to be treated in a manner that would keep him content at Celtic. The fact he left should be viewed with sadness and with sense of sadness that neither side had the maturity to sort the issue out.

I hope that's what you mean by complex.

He was complex not cynical or malcontent. He was a great player and a good person. It's a shame he felt he had to move from Celtic.

    smelltheglove2,

I share your frustration that we have not signed a defender or two, and I'd have loved it if we'd spent even bigger during the transfer window, but spending has to be sustainable.

We have spent about £7million, funded by outgoings, and apart from the defence, which even there is improved to a certain extent by the signing of Lee Naylor, I feel we have a stronger team for an affordable spend.

I think Celtic will strengthen the defence during the January window, hopefully using some of the Stan millions. We cannot though expect to spend any more than £3m-£4m on any one player.

The club are only now emerging from the debt of the "Dream-Team"/MON era when we did spend massively. £10m on two players does not guarantee quality as Berkovic and Scheidt proved. If we spend beyond our means it may or may not be successful on the pitch, but eventually it will have to be paid for financially, maybe with another 3 or 4 years with no big transfers in.

I regard the CL as a nice bonus. We won't win it this season or next. The only way we can win it again is to rear one or two superstars of our own, supplemented by two or three top-class signings and the rest made up of competent professionals.

The second two are achievable every year, the first depends on too many variables to ever be relied on to happen.

Of the current squad, I believe that McGeady and Maloney are on their way to being absolutely top class. I also believed John Kennedy was on his way before that horrific injury which no-one could have foreseen or done anything about. I hope and pray for him but who knows how his career will turn out now?

Our problem is, can we continue to produce youngsters with the same potential? Will those two or three stay with Celtic into the peak years of their career?

Celtic cannot and will not spend unsustainably to chase the dream of winning the Champions League. If we are to do it, it will take years of hard work building a team capable of doing it, rather than a quick-fix spend big solution.

As Jock Stein in the '60's and Jose Mourinho (blast him!) more recently proved, it might even be that a pre-existing group of players can be galvinised by a new manager into achieving greatness.

Until then, our only realistic target has to be to win the SPHell in order to have our days in the sun in the Champions League. I'm confident that our spend so far puts us in a great position to win the league again.

    We are largely in agreement.

However all of my Celtic supporting life, the great Celtic teams have always been “one or two” short of being top class. I am not getting any younger and still I am asked to be patient. I am of the opinion, mostly due to the excellent stewardship from Fergus onwards, that we should now be kicking on. We have the cash, we have the foundations.

The discussions last night highlighted that Celtic hasn’t produced a player of sustained worth since Paul McStay. Who’s to say the McGeady’s and Malonies wont go the way of the Burchills, Creaneys, Donnelys, Lynch.etc etc etc.

Of course only an idiot would suggest spending would guarantee success. That’s not my argument at all. However hard cash allows us to shop in a different market. The VOH and Gravesen market. Then it’s all down to selection and backing the judgement of the football people we have in charge.

While delighted by the recent acquisitions, I just can help but feel disappointed that we have missed an opportunity. Who knows when we will be a POT 2 seeded team again? Maybe never.

The SPL in my view allows us access to where we really belong. Winning it gets us on the starting blocks. That’s where I want our ambitions to be geared towards.

wrote this in response to some of the posts I read this morning my time. Just as I was about to post the thread changes. Might mean something to somebody so here goes..........

    I really do despair.

Some people just don’t know how to be happy. Buy them a Hauf & a Hauf and some want the Hauf too.

I have empathy for the likes of STG2 and those who subscribe to the validity of his school of thought and posts. The reason I have empathy for him and his ilk is, because I too, have a toe in that camp.
I too, share some of their opinions and desires. Not all, but some. I too, want what is best for Celtic and I would love them to sign up a couple of central defenders, a couple of two footed full backs, a couple of midfielders, a couple of strikers. They’d all have to be in the 23 to 27 year old wage bracket and oh, they must all be recognised internationalist whose home country is within a three hour flight of Glasgow so they don’t have to cross the international dateline and be docked a days wage every time they represent their country.

Stay with me guys. You might think I’m being condescending but trust me I’m not.

    Posts.
Some of the posts are so sincere and so humbling irrespective of content or level of eloquence. I love to read them and for over two years have restrained from involving myself too often. I’d rather read and learn than profess and confuse.
Sometimes I read posts pertaining to desires for the betterment of Celtic. Sometimes I get the impression that the author is young and short of experience and knowledge. Other times I get the impression the author of some posts are just playing the devils advocate and proclaiming the ‘ol, “but what if”. Other times I read posts and I think Oh! Oh! this geezer is at the wind up. Often, these posters get a bite which proves beyond the originators abilities to control. Rather than bow out gracefully, said poster, can on occasion resort to talking mince, as he side-pedals to god knows where; consequence there-off :- a nice big hole to go hide oneself in.
Then there is the impostor. I just love it when I come across the impostors.
The impostor, with no other intention, but that of mischief making. No trust me I really do get a wee thrill when I come across the impostors. My ol’ man used to say the worst insult could often be dressed as pity. How sad can ones life really be when you have to resort to impersonating another anonymously in cyberspace?
But overall I seldom doubt the sincerity of the poster and his ambitions for Celtic.
Some times though it just reads the wrong way. Confusion reigns, tempers fray and the proverbial hits the fan.

I think I encountered a few of each sort of poster on here in the last 48hrs. Some of them got me a little frustrated.

Now to get to the point:

Celtic. Last time I looked, were still a PLC. Although Peter Lawwell said last week that he would spend the fans money wisely in the transfer market. I don’t think he literally meant, “the fans money”. Reason being, the money no longer belongs to the fans. It belongs to the PLC and the office holders brief is a simple one………enhance the investments of the shareholders.that’s business whether we like it or not. They cannot, on a whim, conduct business so brazenly, as to commit Celtic to buying players until the required funds are available. Nice as it may sound DD subbing the club 5 or 10 Mill. Until the CL money comes in, would be grand. However, it is a PLC and as such, such buddie behaviour is not allowed in law. (Unfortunately a wee interest free loan is always nice).
To make money available, if its not already in the company accounts means a secured loan would have to be sought or yet another floatation.
If the money were readily available last Thursday, I too, would have loved to have seen a central defender brought into the club. Before this can happen though certain criteria must be addressed and met.

Do we need a player to fill a given position?
Are there players of that position available?
Are these players who can play that position better than what we already have?
Can we afford these players that are available?
Last and most important of all………….
Does the player who can fill that position, that we can afford who is better than what we already have and is available right now, want to come to Celtic and play in the SPL? ((ignore any other competition we may be involved in) that’s the cream)).
    It really isn’t that easy.
I really do believe, and for the first time I can say this unequivocally, I really, honestly do believe that of late DD and the board of Celtic FC sanctioned PL and GS to pursue players that they considered would enhance the team and its’ potential to deliver success. Measured success in each and all competition entered. Not necessarily winning these competitions but playing and competing to a standard that reflects well on Celtic and is accompanied with the respect that we deserve.
I think DD, BQ, PL,GS and all the others who seem to escape praise should be congratulated. Whole heartedly and unreservedly.
I know as a club we have won nothing so far this season, but we sure do have a squad capable of delivering.

SmellThe Glove2 /Associated School of thought and economics (nothing personal mate)
“I want those extra two footed fullbacks, the central defenders, etc., etc. and I want them now and I don’t care how we pay for them because by spending the money, maybe, maybe we’ll go on and win the CL.”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Then again mate, maybe not!!
Give that a just a little more thought. I’m sure you’re aware of Leeds and the predicament they find themselves in to this day. Money, guarantees nothing. It can assist but that is its’ limit. Paradoxically the lack of it can sometimes be a blessing but that’s another story altogether.

Me, well I really do believe that Calwell, McManus, Balde and JFK along with the full backs are more than capable of holding their own. They may not be world beaters but they are good, solid, hard working footballers with no small measure of skill. They could play in any league in the world. Maybe not in the top team of that league but that is academic. Most of all they are all Celtic at heart. Even, Bobo.
I’ll concede they need the protection from those in front.
For them to perform and satisfy us we must first be supportive and motivate them.
We have no God given right to win anything. Nowt, Nada. SFA. Honest, if anybody tells you anything different then he’s a lying git.
No disrespect to any other team in Scotland but I think we will win the league with the players we have.
Qualification from the group however is not guaranteed. We are capable of doing it. Then again so are Benfica, Copenhagen and even Man. Utd.
Let’s give those already in the hoops a chance to shine without beating the, I want, I want, I wanted drum any more
Me at the moment, I’m more than content with what we have. I’ll stand by, support and see how GS and Celtics three year plan progresses.
One for January though. Please Gordon, forget about being a Hibee and get that Kevin Thompson into a Celtic Jersey before Liverpool or Spurs get their hands on him.

The window is now closed and all opinions of who we should have had and who shouldn’t be there are now mute. We have a squad a good squad and with our help they will bring success to us and glory to the club. T here will be days when some won’t play to there capabilities. That is when they need our support the most. I remember back in the early sixties, a certain Yogi Hughes used to find it difficult to keep his footing on a cold iced surface.(No under soil heating then and no fancy footwear either…… no studs,……..training shoes were often the preferred footwear in those conditions). John Hughes, a great player, normally, could be reduced to a rambling wreck because of the surface. And oh how the moronic would scream their bile and abuse. I am not the most religious person but I used to take my rosary beads in my pocket to the winter games.
John Hughes was my brothers favourite player, Bertie Auld was mine, and I used to hate seeing the tears in his eyes every time Yogi was subjected to the vile and thoughtless abuse from the moronic. Believe me, when I say vile. That aimed at one of our own too. Decade after decade of the Rosary I would say but obviously nothing would change. The surface stayed iced, Yogi couldn’t keep his feet, the morons continued to abuse and my brother would have tears for Yogi. Wouldn’t take long before my head would go down, I’d hide myself inside my duffel coat and I shed tears too. Tears for Yogi, for my brother and for those morons that just couldn’t see the hurt they were causing to Yogi, to my brother, to those around them and most important of all, to me. I know there is still verbal abuse of Celtic players by Celtic supporters at parkhead to this day. Somehow I don’t think it measures up to that which could emanate from the jungle where we would stand. I would’ve been about seven back then. My brother, a year older. God do I remember the hurt.
So next time you want to rise from your seat and fling dogs abuse and invectives at one of your own,

(for those amongst you who have difficulty with the term “your own” well usually that means the good guys, yeah those guys down there in the green and white hoops)

which to be fair is your right because you’ve paid your money an aw rat.
    AYE RIGHT.
When you’re finished your tirade before you sit down again, take a moment and have a wee look around and see how many under ten year old kids are looking at you in awe. Hey you really made some impression there mate. See the kid four rows back six seats along. Wee, dark haired boy. Aye, him, you’ve got it. He’s only six but he’s telling himself, I’ll need to ask daddy what “an effin useless, dyke jumper”, means, after the game.
Depending on how gullible that kid is and how ugly you are will go a ways to determining that kids perception of the player and his abilities that you thought it was your right to so publicly abuse. Again you paid your money and so it’s your right and again I say………..
    AYE RIGHT
Don’t forget though, you gotta look that kid right in the eye to get the best effect.
Do you know what I think mate. I think as you take your seat and sheepishly look around nobody will be paying you any attention at all. They’ve heard it all before and your tirade has now become nothing more than a repetitive and repulsive verbal assault on one of your own. Embarrassment, the most common emotion followed by my favourite. PITY. But not enough of it.
Mate hold up a minute. You’re my hero. You’ve really got your finger on the pulse and your industrial encouragement will do him a world of good. He really really needed sorting out. Again…………………………………………………………….
    AYE RIGHT
More insidious than the guy who rises from his seat to scream his vile abuse at one of his own, is the one who electronically spreads his doom gloom and poison.
He may not have the big mouth of the vocal abuser but he sure as hell can have the same effect. Worse even. The written word. You put anything on paper, your screen is the paper, and you transmit it. It will be read and it will influence others. Your negativity will have an effect believe me. But at least the guy with the foul mouth won’t hide behind a keyboard. It may not be decent but at least his gospel is witnessed.
He may be a fool but at least he’s not a cowardly fool.
The, anonymous, on-line, critique. Some man.

I am not saying don’t criticise. Of course you should. It is your duty even. It’s the manner in which it is done and the amount of thought that has been put into it before voiced that will be your measure.
Neither am I trying to lecture.
I am merely trying to point out to you that words written or spoken can have a profound effect on others.
I am asking you please. If you are not like me and see Kenny Millar like I do, a better than good football player, who was in my eyes brave to sign for us in the first place. Please take a step back, close your eyes and try and think yourself into his shoes. Then try taking a few steps in his shoes and then try and feel what he must be feeling.
Now open your eyes and now having given it a little thought from a different perspective, if you still want to publicly criticise KM then go right ahead. But in doing so you’re gonna look awfully like those dicks I remember as a seven year old in the jungle proper. Go on. You’ve had your quiet moment of reflection and your opinion has changed not a jot. So feel free. Have some consideration for the likes of Kenny Millar and his family or go ahead and be vindictive, that is exactly what you are being because now it is premeditated and it serves no purpose other than self gratification . To what purpose I fear to ask because most of all, I fear the answer.
I’ve always thought KM a player right back to his Hibs days. I was disappointed when he signed for Rangers. Not because he signed for Rangers but that he never signed for us. Now he has and I for one think we got a great deal. Oh and I would not describe his role or the way he has being playing as that which you would expect of an out and out striker.

Kenny Millar and Gary Caldwell may or may not go on to be great servants of Celtic but right now I’m declaring myself as being one hundred percent in the “they will succeed corner”. Unconditional and unequivocal support for both of them and any other that pulls on the hoops and gives their one hundred percent best efforts. In all honesty what more can you ask for or expect?
A two way street of appreciation and reciprocation may be the simple answer to the will they, won’t they make it conundrum. Negativity and whinging for whingings sake has no place in the equation.

And should we meet defeat against the likes of Clyde again this year then before we turn on our own like a pack of snarling wolves, please at least have the graciousness to congratulate those who beat us and in doing so, maybe just maybe, you’ll have simmered down enough, to be both objective and constructive in the criticism our club would probably deserve. Somehow I don’t think it will come to that. But to borrow somebodies motto, “aye ready’.

    I little ditty to quantify.

I was fortunate and I mean fortunate to have been at Old Trafford the night those cheatin’ b@rtards from Vienna put us out of Europe. We all know the score. I left that game with about 15 minutes to go, I had too, and walked round the back of the Celtic end to get back to the car. I was gutted. I mean Seville like gutted, Larsson leaving like gutted. I sat on the kerb in an industrial street and waited for my brothers and friends to join me. I sat with my head in my hands (I’d long since outgrown that duffel coat of my childhood) and again there were tears in my eyes and I was choking. I’d have sat there for maybe no more than five minutes, I was aware that there were police all around me. When I did look up there were others sitting in the gutter leaning against walls and bent lethargically over cars. Even the Manchester drizzle couldn’t hide the evidence of the tears. You could hear the crowd in the distance, all two hundred or so Vienna supporters were making enough noise to be heard two kilometres away. Then the final whistle. Cue for heads to go down and more tears to be spilt. The only words that I can remember were those of a rather pretty Manchester policewoman to that of her colleague along the lines of , “surely it can’t mean that much”, to which her rather more sportingly aware colleague replied, “of course it can. They are Scottish”. I think he meant to say……..”Of course it can. They are Celtic”.
Eventually our group all met up and since we were staying overnight in Manchester before heading up the road, we made our way to Paddy Crerands pub in Altringham.
When we arrived it was worse than a paupers wake. There would have been about 30 to 40 of us initially but not a lot was being said. There were a group of Trainee Stewardesses maybe about ten or twelve sitting of to the side. You could see they were nervous. About another 40 Tims turn up at the bar. Amongst them my friends from the clydebank area. Five minutes of an impressive Irish style morbidity pass then all hell breaks lose. The noise is incredible, there are maybe as many as 250 of us in the bar now and the singing is incredible. Every man worth his salt is tying his best to nip one of the stewardesses. They are up dancing too. In walks Paddy Crerand accompanied by Billy McNiell. (I think they were good mates once) The noise levels go up two hundred thousand dBs. It’s long after official closing time when we leave the Jolly Friar. We make our way to the car park where we change into more appropriate night club gear. We’re off once again to Altringham FC social club. No colours allowed. As we change cloths on a bitterly cold night in the car park, Billy McNeill and co. pass in fits of laughter. There are Tims scattered all over this car park trying to get their dancing gear on, over, to a man, his Celtic strip. No colours allowed, was the rule.
We get to the club and there are dozens upon dozens of Tims queuing up to get in. The club has a few extra bouncers on for the night and their instructions are simple. No singing, no colours, no fighting. We were in the place no more than fifteen minutes when off it goes. Shirts are discarded and the hoops are everywhere. You couldn’t here the dj or the music for the signing of the Celtic supporters. The staff and bouncers to a person appeared to have a ball. There was no police to be seen and on exiting at nights end, no police to be seen. We had just been knocked out of Europe and it was probably the proudest I ever been to be a Celtic Supporter.
    Why?
    Simple.
I never heard a single derogatory word against the club or the players.
After the game everybody I witnessed behaved impeccably. I wasn’t in Seville I had to be elsewhere for a few months, but I would imagine it was comparable, if not in scale at least in spirit. God it was great to be a Tim that night that Austria Vienna cheated us out of the cup. Us, we shed a tear, shrugged the shoulders and proceeded to get tanked outta our nuts and squandered the night in song and dance. Pure Magic. Pure…………….The Celtic Way.

I am no brown nose, no point gatherer and certainly nobody’s flunky. I am writing these words as a die hard Celtic man who is distressed at what I perceive to be nothing less than blind and insidious greed that is creeping into the support and their voiced desires.
Uncontrolled spending would take us only to ruin. Whichever bus you want to be on.
Subjective and non-constructive criticism is nothing more than the beating of the gums/keyboard. It can be detrimental to the development of our children not to mention our global image of an all embracing, fun loving support. (orgies optional and down the roadat No. 57) Which, to the greater extent we are. You can agree with me or not. Your choice. But lets not ever question each
others commitment to the club that we both adore and support. By all means lets debate to an agreement or to a disagreement. Argue if that is your want. I enjoy a good argument as much as the next person but let’s not personalise these arguments. Nothing but fraction will be gained from that. Also let’s keep our feet on the ground and see ourselves for what we are. Not what our blind devotion will have us think we are. We are Celtic. That’s all. Simply Celtic. To me everything else in football is secondary and in football as a club we will find our level.
    Let’s get things in perspective.
Agree realistic goals that are attainable.
Be united in the pursuit of these goals.
As individuals and collectively be supportive of all who have been asked to strive to achieve our ambitions. Never forgetting if we were any better at the game than they, it would be us out there busting our guts.

IT’S NOT APPTITUDE, IT’S ATTITUDE THAT WILL DETERMINE YOUR ALTITUDE
    .
Life has taught me, many times over, that this is ever so true. Bank it.

Lets support the team to the best of our abilities so the can play the game to the best of theirs so I can have night after night of debauched celebration to the best of my abilities. Promise.

Just one last word if you don’t mind.
To the Scottish hacks (G. Spiers excluded) Let me wish you a great big heart felt and sincere ,GIRUY every last one of you, you bunch of deceitful…………How in the name of God do you justify your existence to yourselves and your families.
What do you do for a living dad? Ah now son I’m one of those philistines who earns a crust thru deceit and lies. Just a wee bit or harmless fun really. Honest son, honest.

To all in Celtic KTF & YNWA

    smelltheglove2,

I can feel your pain! I think where we differ is the extent of spending we can countenance. After transfer fees and wages are factored in, I don't think we can afford to sign any more than two or three top class players. We already have JVoH, Gravesen and possibly Jorisik when he gets his act together.

I think McGeady and Maloney are more likely to go the way of Macari, Hay and Dalglish than Donnelly, Burchill et al. I hope they both go on to be Celtic greats but as you rightly point out, you never know.

The point I'm trying to make is that in order to get those one or two missing top class players, we have to be doing all we can to produce them ourselves because we can't afford to buy too many. Problem is, that's not an exact science and our record over the past 30 years is abysmal.

I feel the current crop are better. Simon Donnelly was never Scotland's Player of the Year. Mark Burchill never terrorised AC Milan to such an extent that they altered their system to cope with him. I also hear (but apart from the u19's in Poland haven't seen them for myself) that Grant, Ferry and Cuthbert are of similar quality.

My opinion is that we have no other option than patience.

all we need is a bit of luck like rankers had last year,i think we have an excellent chance to progress, then we have the money to strengthen in january with the type of quality that may be reqd? who is to say its going to be the defence that needs strengthened,it could be any part of the team, have faith i really think you need some

    Interesting point Paul.

This season’s champions league campaign will be somewhat different from those we had under Martin O'Neil. We have different personnel and a new style of play.

Beforehand the tactic was - make Parkhead a fortress and pick up what we can away from home. We overpowered teams and used the intimidating atmosphere at Parkhead to our advantage.

We now are far better suited to counter-attacking, a very useful tactic away from home in Europe. I imagine that we will be looking at away games with far greater optimism.

I know that you are exited at the prospects that Nakamura brings to the team - that 'killer ball' is all important at that level.

This campaign will be treated as six individual games - 6 different games where specific tactics will be employed. We will set out to pick up points home and away.

A Copenhagen win over Benfica is something I can't get excited about. Especially the way the fixtures pan out.

Copenhagen would then come to Celtic Park with their tales up and it would ensure the last game in the group in Copenhagen would be vital to both teams.

I would much prefer the Danes to be the whipping boys giving us at least the guarentee of UEFA Cup football after Christmas.

If we then prove good enough to pip Benfica to 2nd place then great.

This team needs to learn to walk before it can run!

    no sidestepping here.
At the end of last season(after Black Sunday) I stated the only three players I did not want to leave were Petrov,McGeady and Bellamy.
The rest ,I would have been happy to say, thanks for the memories.
Also stated the other night, while debating Maloney's situation, that Stan did the wright thing, even when leaving us.
I have no beef at all with Stan(well maybe his childish show of petulism the day we won the league made me want to wring his neck)
Still think he is a torn face git though.
And I also feel the same about Roy Keane.
Some people may well call it"positive virtues attesting to a perfectionist attitude"
I don't. I call it being a moaning faced git.
And by the way,I like Roy Keane too.

    Paul,
well said with the Benfica situation, although,I have a feeling this group will be a lot tighter than a lot of people think.
And it wouldn't surprise me a great deal if second place was being fought out between Celtic and Man Utd,or between Man Utd and Benfica for that matter.

Interesting post Paul but I would like to make a contentious statement here. I suspect that Benfica are not as good as everyone thinks they are.

I just checked the standings for the 2005-06 portuguese league and found that Benfica finshied 3rd, 12points behind winners Porto. Now we witnessed how ordinary Porto were last season. Isn't it possible that Benfica simply "punched above their weight" in last season's CL?

If so we should not fear them at all.

A guy sitting behind me(a really nice bloke otherwise) slaughtered Lenny mercilessly last week. You could probably count his poor performances over the years he has been at the club on one hand. Short memories and particularly given what he has had to endure over the years. I also take your point on the fans' greed for success. Of course we want as much success as possible, that goes without saying, but supporting this great club of ours is about so much more.

    STG2 posted the info below.

For what it's worth, I believe that we have been punching BELOW our weight in Europe for a long time. Teams from Norway and other 'wee' countries have been qualifying for the last 16 with some frequency. True, we have had to pay over the odds to get players to come to Scotland, but I still feel that with the money that we have had available, we have horribly underperformed in Europe.

I like where Celtic are going now. Piece by piece, we are rebuilding the team. What needs to happen in concert with good financial management, is a similar improvement in scouting and youth development. Hopefully that is coming along also. The other BIG thing is tactics. Since Big Jock left Celtic until MON arrived, we have been consistently stupid in how we have tackled European games.

Getting back to STG2's posts....turnover is the starting point. What we do with that money is largely under the control of the club. We have had some really BAD spends in the post Fergus era. Barnes and Dalglish have a lot to answer for. MON threw a lot of money at people who did not play. He also threw a lot of money at an aging squad. We need to stop doing both these things. The sale of Stan is sad, necessary and constructive. There will be more to come like that, I am sure.

So, all in all, we are I believe, on the right road.

    STG2's info follows....
    --------------------------------------
The following table illustrates the top earners across Europe. Again is this a coincidence that the top 10 are recognised as the most successful?

    Rank Club Income (£ mn)
    1 Manchester United 171.5
    2 Real Madrid 156.3
    3 AC Milan 147.2
    4 Chelsea 143.7
    5 Juventus 142.4
    6 Arsenal 115.0
    7 Barcelona 112.0
    8 Internazionale 110.3
    9 Bayern Munich 110.1
    10 Liverpool 92.3
    11 Newcastle United 90.5
    12 AS Roma 72.0
    13 Celtic 69.0
    14 Tottenham Hotspur 66.3
    15 Lazio 65.8
    16 Manchester City 61.9
    17 Schalke 04 60.5
    18 Marseilles 58.3
    19 Rangers 57.1
    20 Aston Villa 55.9

But my general layman’s point is this. If Celtic currently lie 13th in European football on the income league. Why are we not seen as the same on the park?

Stan is a fine player and when he had 'quiet' games, he was often doing a marking job, or making up for Lennon's lack of mobility. So, as a player, I couldn't agree with Kojo.

If Kojo had info that is not in the public domain, then fair enough, I wouldn't know.

As for what eventually transpired, it worked out very well for the club. Asset management at work. Buy a young player. Get 7 years of good service. Sell high. Replacement already lined up. I like it.

It is interesting that you believe the vile has actually reduced since the 1960’s. As I have said before, there is a psychology phd waiting for someone to analyse what motivates people to abuse others from the safety of a crowd or, as you say, anonymity on the Internet.

The influence on kids is an interesting point. I remember a guy who stood in the same area as me when I was a boy give Dom Sullivan grief every time he touched the ball. Even though no one would argue that Dom Sullivan was a great player, his abuser sounded like a fool to me.

Anyway, to be fair.....admiration of a 'suit' is not something that has been part of our culture. During the pre-Fergus demonstrations they were demonized. And rightly so.

Unfortunately, many Celtic supporters have contued, blindly, to believe that the suits and the board were the root of (mostly) all evil.

So, it is some turnaround to have someone like Peter Lawell being (mostly) roundly appreciated by the masses. I think that this blog has been a great forum for helping people understand the realities in which Celtic operate.

Too many Tims still read the rags and perpertuate their own ignorance. The fact that some fans now understand and appreciate the work of our 'suits' is a major step forward.

    Long way to go, though.....

Paul says “My friends in Celtic; the club has money. Mostly yours and mine, but a reasonable amount from Nike, Carling, T-Mobile, the US tour even some Japanese Soccer fans.”

We now have even more money. We are told the Chelsea and Japanese friendlies netted a cool £1m .The transfer comings and goings has added another minimum of £1m to the coffers. We will have even more money guaranteed. A minimum of £7m from the CL perhaps as much as £10m.

My question is simple, why did we not spend it.

Please….no more Leeds! This is an extreme example of gross mismanagement. Not the road I am advocating at all.

"Give it some thought mate (nothing personal). We HAVE the cash. We should have spent it"

STG2, with respect, I think there's a touch of impudence in advising anyone to "give it some thought" when you yourself seem not to have subjected the situation to even the most basic analysis.

Since the football context seems entrenched, allow me to "reframe" the situation for you, by Telling You A Story.

You go into town with seven pounds to but some sweeties. There is a lovely sweet shop in town, which sells the most excellent Yum Deluxes. You bounce in happily, give your money to the plump shopkeeper, and spend most of your seven pounds buying Yum Deluxes. Sensibly keeping a fraction of your cash in case you see anything else you want later.

As you are walking down the street, you meet a boy coming the other way, counting a bundle of pound notes with a big grin.

He looks at your rather fetching hat and says "My, I'd love a hat like that. Here, I'll give you six pound fifty for it... and another pound fifty later!"

You realise this is a pretty good price for your hat (which in any case has been trying to fly off your head for months at the first sign of a breeze).

"Deal!" you say, and gleefully exchange hat for cash.

Realising that this transaction now widens your Yum Deluxe horizons, you bound back to the sweetshop. However, by this time it is almost five o'clock, and the shop is getting ready to shut.

"Sorry me lad" says the plump shopkeeper, "but we're all out of Yum Deluxes! Allow me to offer you some of our Lime-&-Sauerkraut Kringes instead!"

"Ermmm... Lime-and-Sss... how much are those?" you enquire uncertainly.

"Same price as the Yum Deluxes!" comes the plump reply.

Now you are left with a choice. Do you spend all your money on Lime-&-Sauerkraut Kringes BECAUSE YOU CAN!!! Or do you save your money till next week, when the Yum Deluxes will be back in stock?

This is one of those stories where you get to make up your own ending. ;)

    The Pookah

    Again thanks for the replay.

here is a joke for all hope you'se all like it now:

The Pope is travelling to the USA, on arrival his American driver helps him with his bags.

After getting all of the Pope's luggage loaded into the limo
(and he doesn't travel light), the driver notices that the Pope is still
    standing on the curb.

Excuse me, Your Holiness," says the driver, "Would you please
take your seat so we can leave?"

Well, to tell you the truth," says the Pope, "they never let me
drive at the Vatican, and I'd really like to drive today."
I'm sorry but I cannot let you do that. I'd lose my job!
And what if something should happen?" protests the driver, wishing he'd
never gone to work that morning.

There might be something extra in it for you," says the Pope.
Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in
behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after
exiting the airport, the Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 105
    mph.

Please slow down, Your Holiness!!!" pleads the worried driver,
but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens.

Oh, dear God, I'm gonna lose my license," moans the driver.

The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop
approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle,
    and gets on the radio.

I need to talk to the Chief," he says to the dispatcher.

The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he's stopped a limo
    going a hundred and five.

So bust him," says the Chief.

I don't think we want to do that, he's really important," said
    the cop.

The Chief exclaimed," All the more reason!"

"No, I mean really important," said the cop.

    The Chief then asked,

    "Who is it, the Mayor?"

    Cop: "Bigger."

    Chief: "Governor?"

    Cop: "Bigger."

"Well," said the Chief, "Who is it?"

    Cop: "I think it's God!"

Chief: "What makes you think it's God?"

Cop: "He's got the Pope as a chauffeur!!"

If this sweetie hat had a guaranteed market value, you might want to go to a hat shop /sweet shop and have a look round for a suitable or maybe even better replacement hat should that inevitable gust of wind come.

I hope you do not mind me posting this up again but I am still in need of help:

My wife has been asked to the opening a Motor Neuron Disease centre next weekend, which I will also attend, in her years working in this field she was involved in the nursing of Jinky as well as Morton and Darren Jackson.

She has written to the Celtic Charity fund asking for support and I am sure she will hear from them in good time.

What I would like help with is how to contact the Jimmy Johnston fund to be able to get her to ask for support for this extremely worthwhile work being done with the sufferers and families of the disease.

'If this “hat” has been trying to fly off for 4 months, you might want to be a bit more proactive and investigate a suitable new hat…or sweets was it? If this sweetie hat had a guaranteed market value, you might want to go to a hat shop /sweet shop and have a look round for a suitable or maybe even better replacement hat should that inevitable gust of wind come.'

Well STG, to continue the story a little further... you have indeed been worried about your hat for some time, and have asked your local Hat Confectioner to find you a replacement hat. Deciding to give the Lime-&-Sauerkraut Kringes a miss, you rush round to the Hat Shop. The hat Confectioner has indeed found you an excellent Danish Skull-cap, at the price of only two pounds! However, like all Confectionery hats, the Danish Skullcap requires fed at regular intervals, and it eats quite a lot. So you wisely put aside some of your remaining cash to feed the hat, and save the rest to buy Yum Deluxes when the shop opens again.

And We All Live Happily Ever After...

with this response I'm going to bed. Before I do so I'll answer your question with a question.

Who? Why? Where? and How Much.

    Standard pre-requisite to player purchase.

Do we need a player to fill a given position?
Are there players of that position available?
Are these players who can play that position better than what we already have?
Can we afford these players that are available?
Last and most important of all………….
Does the player who can fill that position, that we can afford who is better than what we already have and is available right now, want to come to Celtic and play in the SPL?

    all the best mate.

    I'm outta here

You've reduced the offence from contempt to condemnation. Now, we're all entitled to condemn on playing performances, though Kitalba has shown we should think very carefully before doing so.
Stan had a poor end to the season last year. Like many of our players, this continued through the last 6 games and, possibly a few before that so, I'll give you a generous 2 month spell where our team, including Stan, were lethargic. He started the first three games this season in fine form so, maybe by your Whitney Houston dictum, we should have ensured he didn't leave.

Anyway, these can be moot points in disagreement. If Stan takes the Sun's shilling to bad mouth Celtic, then contempt might become an appropriate response. He is now, a former employee. We can look on those with affection but not if they seek to damage us after leaving.

    Regards your comment on Copenhagen.
Conjured up thoughts of this street marching up and down the city centre! I'm booked to go there in December with the family to visit friends, the rest of the family went last year but I didn't make it. They've put me wise to the longest shopping street! Think Celtic supporters will be well received.
