Gravesen, Strachan, Lawwell Press Conference

Thomas Gravesen was perhaps the most glowing footballer I have ever seen as he spoke of joinging Celtic, “I came mainly because of the manager and how he presented the club, but also the fans and the great history.

Gordon Strachan was keen to play down his own role, “I think the fans can take a lot of responsibility for this signing. He [Gravesen] has been up many times and enjoyed the atmosphere.

“He wanted to come here, just as Roy Keane did last year.”

Peter Lawwell, after receiving the congratulations from a media, often hostile to Celtic in the past, said, “Thomas has an amazing passion for the game, and for Celtic Football Club.

“I would like to thank the board for supporting myself and Gordon in this manner. It is a sign of our ambition that we can attract and sign players such as Thomas to the club.

On the cost of bringing Gravesen, he added, “There was no compromise at all in terms of the wage structure.”

On where he will play on the field, Gravesen said, “I prefer to play as an attacking midfield player, but that is for the manager to take care off. I am a player with other things to take care off.

“I hope I am a player who will fit right into the team.

Asked if he was up for the game against Manchester United, five days away, he said, “Right now I am up for the game tomorrow.

“Every footballer has to prove his worth, and I have a point to prove as well.

When asked what he thought of his new team mates, Gravesen replied, “I have been watching them almost as long as you.”

Gordon Strachan finished on a profound note, “We hope to continue to create history, and we need personalities to help us do that. In Thomas, we have experience and personality."

    Reposted from the last thread:

My final word on non-football matters for this weekend, swear to God.

    Couple of things:

The singing debate is getting hotter by the minute. P8ddy’s post, where he compared the lyrics of various songs to some of our own, was a show-stopper for me. How can anyone argue the toss over that?

On this capitalism thing, I have a few points to make. First, Addis posted the question last night, “what’s wrong with capitalism?”

Frankly, I find the question itself to be highly offensive and an insult to the collective intelligence of the people on the site. Let me be clear on something before I go on; I like Addis and all the other members of the Clan (not to be mistaken for the Klan). I think they bring a great deal to this site, and on most things we agree. I also think that Addis’ tongue is most assuredly firmly in cheek when he throws in comments about pulling up the ladder and ignoring the poor.

If humour is the desired effect, I understand it and get the joke. Because it has a certain, surface funniness about it. But under the surface, I find the comments to be more than a little niggling.

The capitalist ideology is grotesque at its centre, because at the very core is a belief that market forces will take care of us. Everyone on this site knows that is garbage of the purest kind. The sad fact is that the capitalist system cares not one bit for the downtrodden and the poor. It cares not what one bit for the workers it employs nor the world that it inhabits. The corporate entity has the same rights as a person; some people don’t know that or realise what it means. It means that the corporate entity has almost unlimited freedom to do whatever it wants, and it also has legal safeguards to prevent anyone, government or otherwise, from interfering with it. That’s why companies can move capital from country to another, close down factories which are making money because they would make still more elsewhere and why you cannot call Coca Cola a bunch of murdering, union smashing thugs for their behaviour in countries like Colombia without worrying about a lawsuit.

But the corporate entity is NOT subject to the same laws as would govern an individual, nor does it have anything like a sense of either community or global responsibility. The corporate entity, in fact, has only ONE key purpose; the making of PROFIT.

    Do you know that it is actually ILLEGAL for a corporation to behave in a way which LIMITS the amount of profit that it makes? I’ll give you an example;

Say Company A finds a deposit of gold buried under a village in some far flung corner of the world. Say, further, that Company A owns the land on which that village stands. Company A has a LEGAL OBLIGATION TO ITS SHAREHOLDERS to exploit that find, regardless of the effect on the village or the villagers. The structure of the corporate entity is such that it could not do good even if it wanted to. And if you wanted to change that system? Every corporation on Planet Earth, regardless of size or standing, would BE LEGALLY OBLIGED to resist that move in whatever way it could.

What kind of ideology is built on such an obscene system? If the corporate entity was a real person that person would be labelled a psychopath, the definition of which is a person who feels no sense of compassion or empathy for others, no sense of right or wrong and no sense of moral or ethical restraint.

The people who live and work in this system are not BAD PEOPLE, but I for one could not work for a multi-national conglomerate in any capacity. I am going to work for a non-governmental organisation, like a charity or something, when I graduate – certainly not for some behemoth which loots small countries, pollutes the air and fires its workers to protect the profit margin. I couldn’t sleep at night if I had to work in a system like that.

And that’s another thing I find offensive, the oft-trotted out line that has been batted around the site these last few days.

The actual quote, falsely attributed to Churchill, is:

"If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain."

There are variations of this quote and no-one can say for sure who said it, when or why, but it’s unrepentant nonsense anyway.

So, in around five years time I should have grown out of all this socialist nonsense then, eah? I don’t suppose there is a way that I can speed up the process, is there? It would be nice to wake up in the morning and not give a damn about anyone but myself – it would make life much easier. Is there some food I can eat, something I can pop, snort or inject which will bring the day forward, or do I have to wait on the day? What books should I read, TV programs should I avoid or people should I surround myself with (or get rid of) to make sure I hit the mark and don’t get left behind?

What knowledge that I don’t presently possess should I be seeking out? What blinding flash of light on the Road to Damascus should I expect before I come around?

Honestly, the remark is condescending, patronising and ignorant, and its use in any argument of significance devalues the argument entirely.

I cannot imagine a day going by when I will not feel more sympathetic towards a single mother bringing up a kid in a drug-filled, rat infested, slum-scheme than for some multi-millionaire business man crying the blues because of the “pressures” of his job. I cannot imagine a day to come when I feel anything but revulsion for a company which lays off its workforce and devastates a local economy because the profit margin would be bigger if it uprooted and moved elsewhere, and I cannot imagine feeling anything other than disgust at those who took the decision and the politicians who lack the backbone to change the system which allows it. The day will never dawn when I will not feel rage at the fat-cats gorging on the pork whilst millions across the globe starve because we lack the will to feed them.

What’s wrong with capitalism? That’s like asking what’s wrong with some of the other ism’s we discuss on here from time to time; like fascism. Like racism.

    Like sectarianism.

The only difference is, they are born from ignorance but are essentially matters of free-will, behaviours which can be changed if the person or persons are willing. Capitalism does not even have that on its side, and if something so rotten can’t be changed it should be torn down so that we can start afresh.

The sooner FIFA start digging into that club and its financial affairs the better. Maybe they'll close down Scotlands Second Cesspit of Bigotry and turn it into something more fitting, like a knackers yard maybe?

It was pretty frightening. My parting shot to them was you are just huns without the bus fare did not set us up for an ammicable rest of the holiday.

    (From the last thread)

If you are after sympathy for missing tomorrow’s game then I demand sympathy for the fact that I am missing our hammering of Rangers on the 23rd!!

My girlfriend just informed me last night that that (a twoser) very weekend her family and I are all going down to stay in England for the weekend. I agreed to go months ago and totally forgot about it. I was delighted to be reminded last night. Not. I am absolutely gutted!!

My response of “No way am I going!” surprisingly didn’t go down too well and I’m not in the good books right now.

I think I might just drive back up for the game and then straight back down after it. It’s a three and a half hour drive each way and quite frankly I don’t have a Scooby how to get back there or to Glasgow for that matter!

I’m 21 and have been going to the games since I was five. I’ve had a season ticket since Hampden but gave it up four years ago because I was a skint uni student. I still am but one that actually occasionally works! We do exist but are a rare breed! I used to just pick and choose the games I bought tickets for, like Hearts, Aberdeen and Hibs during my exile.

I finally got my season ticket back last year though and can’t see myself ever giving it up again. Fingers crossed I have the cash though.

Anyway the reason I am talking about the above is that I have only missed three Celtic V Rangers’ games that I have had a ticket for. Have a guess which three I missed!

    Go on...

The first was when I was just a young un’ and my dad had a pair of tickets for the game at Ibrox but my ogre of a mother wouldn’t let me go because of all the apparent trouble that would occur. It was the 2-0 game where Collins and McStay scored. The 1994/95 season I believe. I was delighted with the score but gutted that I wasn’t there instead of my dad’s friend. Ah well my dad promised to take me to the next game at Ibrox. I’ve still never been except for semi's and finals.

The second was the 5-1 game under Venglos. I was ill and couldn’t make it. Again my dad took his friend instead of me and came home a tiny bit drunk talking non-stop about “Lubo”.

“Nobody knows his name we all just called him Lubo” says he.

“Yeah he was brilliant like I told you after the Dundee game. By the way his name is Moravcik”.

“Dunno we all just shouted, Lubo Lubo”.

He then proceeded to re-enact the goals for me over and over and over again. Groan. Talk about rubbing it in.

The third game I missed believe it or not was the 6-2 game although I can’t remember why. Again my dad’s jammy git of a friend got to go to the game with him instead of me.

I guess I’m just not meant to attend the great games against Rangers.

Maybe it’s for the best that I’ll miss the game on the 23rd and will be in England. Knowing my luck it will probably be a classic....

Ardoch it was indeed a special game and I think it was the last time that I won money from the bookies.
I stood the whole 2nd half with a radio at my ear. The guy behind me told me after the game he just stood looking at my back and not watching the game to see if I would jump when Dundee scored.
He told me I jumped a wee bit!!!

    I'll bet it didn't ...........

Funny, after the Scotland game on Saturday I overheard a couple of Rangers fans who'd been at the match doing some bitching on how they were "mistreated" at Celtic Park. They were doing all the usual mumbling and moaning, but their principal objection seemed to be that the game should have been played at Ibrox.

As they were just getting ready to leave the pub as I walked in, I could not resist a parting shot of my own:

"Yeah, two hundred thousand that game was worth to Celtic. Just think, had Rangers gotten that they could have brought another Manchester United Reserve on loan ............ "

    They weren't very amused .......

Why do we do these things? Because they are fun, perhaps?

Gravesen replied, “I have been watching them almost as long as you.”

This is a very important statement. Gravesen will realise what is required in the same way that you and I do. Tomorrow we will need energy, bite and drive in the midfield if we are to come away from 3 points.

Games against Aberdeen are won and lost in the midfield – that’s how it goes. If we can get on top of them in midfield the forwards will do their job – I don’t doubt that for a second. Also winning the midfield battle will strangle supply to the Aberdeen forwards, giving our defence an ‘easy’ time. We all know there are weaknesses at the back than can be exposed if we give our opposition the chance.

Jarosik has not quite grasped what is required in the midfield battles but I am sure Gravesen will feel much more at home in tomorrow’s environment. It is Gordon Strachan’s job to educate and develop Jarosik to our style of play – that’s his job so I would urge people to hold reservation on the big man for another month or so.

I hope we terrorise Aberdeen from the first minute tomorrow. We are now in a position where we can over power and outclass teams at the same time – a luxury not enjoyed for a while now.

Gravesen man of the match tomorrow and Hessleink to pick up where he left off last time will do me.

It bringing back memories of Love street which was always a ground i loved going to.
The night Tom Mcadam got sent off in the cup and we won 3-2 in extra time probably the greatest game John Doyle played for us.
I also remember around the early 90's we beat the 3-2 with a last minute goal. It was a nothing game but for some reason everyone went mental.

Asides from how ridiculous it is, which i would like to be explained, but a 2nd point, and from a corporate point of view, if a site owner was a share holder, surely they own a part of the club no matter how small, and are entitled to display it proudly

James Forrest's attack on "capitalism" is his to make. However his statement that "it is actually ILLEGAL for a corporation to behave in a way which LIMITS the amount of profit that it makes? " is nonsense.

Companies have a duty to shareholders to maximise profit within the confines of the law. They do not have a duty to exploit all assets to maximum potential regardless of every other factor. If this was the case half of Scotland would be turned into an open-cast mine, for example. To suggest this is the LAW is ridiculous - for exampe, some companies make a loss, would this entitle shareholders to sue them? No.

There is no LAW that insists on this. I'm afraid James is getting carried away a bit.

I`m stretching my memory but I believe that Hearts last won the league in 1960 and I got the Scottish Football book that year which described the day that Hearts won the league.
At Love Street in a 4-4 draw! So it should have happy memories for some Jambos! :-) Typical eh? concentrating on the negative!

I`m looking for our first away win of the season tomorrow. Aberdeen is a hard place to go but they have their share of players out. Celtic should be able to win the game!

You're right greenlion, it's a different game today. The young ones don't knowwhat they're missing. Being a supporter up until they tore down the old place, was an all singing all dancing experience, home and away. I had no voice left after most matches, which some would say was a good thing. Sinatra i am not.

My footage of the Love St game is looking decidedly rough now through over use. Watching Jim White having to join in when interviewing the players after the match is almost as good as the game. Due to that game, the jersey we wore that day became and remains, my favourite away top. I always thought it was a lucky top for us.

Forget money and profits, the economic world is all about consumption. Money is merely the way in which we can value our choices between competing preferences.

It is always kind of funny to see people enjoying the benefits of a market based economy and then questioning the manner in which they are provided.

    I can’t make pencils
    I can’t make shoes
I can’t make the clothes that I wear
    I can’t grow crops
    I can’t raise cattle
    I can’t build computers
    I can’t invent the microchip
    I can’t build a car
    I can’t make television shows

These are just some of the many, many things that I cannot do. But I want and need them. My life is infinitely better with these things in them. Smart people through the ages have recognised that they are good at certain things like growing crops whereas others are better at making furniture. We need and want both so what to do? Here is an idea, why don’t you grow crops and you make the furniture that way there will be more of each than if you went your own separate ways.

From barter to bretton woods, people have seen the benefit of trading with each other and that has helped the average living standard in the world to rise more than one hundred fold since medieval times. Capitalism has grown as a way of ensuring that more goods are produced and therefore more people can enjoy more consumption of the things that they value.

I work less hours than my father did at my age and I consume more than he did. He in turn worked less than his father before him. As each generation (however long that is….) passes, the next are better off than that which has gone before. Capitalism works and provides me with a better standard of living than I would otherwise have. It also provides me with the opportunity to care about others less fortunate than myself and I do that by paying someone else to take care of them – the government. I work hard, get my rewards and do not b!tch that nearly a third of my rewards are taken from me and distributed elsewhere. I think this is a good thing as we should take care of those that can’t take care of themselves.

South Korea or North Korea, where would you rather be?

James Forrest says of one of the coterie's capitalistic looking after number one viewpoints, "Honestly, the remark is condescending, patronising and ignorant, and its use in any argument of significance devalues the argument entirely."

Strangely, this applies equally well to some of their views on football e.g. Ross Wallace is a potential world class left back, Petrov is a "journeyman" and dismissing Kenny Miller's contribution to Celtic after only a handful of competitive games. ;-)

And Addis thinks that Thatcher did not go far enough in her capitalist right wing philosophies? 'Still Gives me the dry boke when I think of her reciting the Beatitudes outside No. 10 in 1979. 'Guess the coterie did not approve of the mass display of red cards shown to Mrs Thatcher by Celtic fans during the 1988 Scottish Cup Final? Thatcher = unCeltic-minded

(Beatitudes? How about Me-atitudes? Beginning with "What have you done for ME lately?")

Danny, 4:04, it must annoy people beyond belief that Celtic have come down on them for using the club crest. When I setup CQN I kept away from all Celtic I.P., as I could see this day coming.

I don’t use photo’s for the same reason. They add a great deal to a site, but unless you take them yourself, and in many instances, have the permission of the person to use on a web site, you are breaking someone’s copyright.

As a result, Celtic Quick News is a bit plain, but I can fight my corner with the lawyers. You would not believe some of the run-ins I have had with ‘senior figures at CP’ over the last two years, and I am sure that a transgression like this would have been used against me.

In short, this is unfortunate, but inevitable.

Oh yeah and if you're on about fossil fuels... when really are about to run out we'll change to hydrogen. The government are relying on mega tax from oil so don't want to stop using it. If they invested a tiny percentage into researching alternative resources all would be well... except the economy...

    What is wrong with Socialism?

    A fair question, doncha think.....

You have had your shot as Capitalism...so it seems fair???

    Cuba......

A Dedicated Communist state..... which is as everybody knows....the first rung in the ladder to the Socialist Nirvana..... but as I had already mentioned...... Socialism is a Chimera..... right? right!

We shall never reach that stage of Saintliness...... The old bugbear...... "Self Interest!!! Self Interest!! bars the way to that complete and wonderful ALTRUISTIC SOCIETY"...as the Boss is wont to say..... "AYE, RICHT?!

And not to mention the already mentioned Bugbear's, Partner....... "Self Preservation"...... with those two Guys in my corner...... I simply "Canny"( Fargo....june24 2000) lose this argument!

To return to the beginning of my example...highlighting the Damning Condemnation of Socialism...(Communism...whatever)

I have never heard of Boat-Loads of Americans heading across the 90 miles of Ocean.... to the promised land of Fidel Castro....have you? No way, Hosay!
Quite the reverse? You got it..... People are like that you know.....they know a good thing when they see it...... and the good ole Capitalistic U.S.A...sure looks mighty fine, mighty, mighty fine........

And here is the kicker..... When the Cuban Immegrants reach the U.S.A....they are not disappointed......no way,Hosay! They just fit right in ,like they were born to the system.....And what system is that, pray tell.......
Why the good old...every man for himself..... the cutthroat.... stab in the back ...Good old ....NATURAL..... Capitalism!!

Want more?..... I thought you would never ask?

    Example No. 2...

We now take my readers to the Porous and much travelled.........But there again.... STRICTLY ONE WAY!!! I repeat for the hard of hearing.... ONE WAY!!.....U.S and Mexico BORDER.

Every Day, it is a guesstimate but in my opinion a good one....... 1500 Escapees......from another land... do their voting ...the good "OLD FASHIONED WAY! ... WITH THEIR FEET! .... and sneak across the border into that hot- bed of Capitalism.... The Good Old U.S.A.....can you as a dedicated Socialist believe that?......Now for the past 80 years MEXICO been ran on the Socialistic Idea of a one Party System, and imbuing all of the silly ideas proposed by Mr. Marx and Mr. Lennon....( pardon me....a natural Freudian slip...can one blame me?) er Lenin......Oh! I know in the very recent times ...Mexico has restored the two Party Democratic form of Governmental Choice......... But believe me, the Mexican Socialists, don't accept that for one Minute..... Calderon is in deep Caca.......
Be that as it may.... the bald truth is Mexico is no Workers Paradise....like Cuba it is a Cess-pool... of restrictive Government......a la the first steps to the Social Changes that will naturally follow..... Don't make me laugh...... Ask the East Germans.....

Speaking of East Germans...... Well, suffice to say.........

This calls for an anecdotal interlude......

This conversation took place many years ago.....somewhere in Anderson......Glasgow...

Red Cydesider: And, soon the East German economy will surpass the West German...it must happen.... give it a few more years... the workers are the most important cog in any economy...right?

Me: I only know what I read in the Newspapers..and it seems that the East German Communists have built some kind of WALL.......to prevent their Citizens from leaking into the Nasty Contemptible West....
Now If I was to choose which system that I would prefer to live under..... then that bit of Construction by the Communists has convinced me....... The fact that People are risking LIFE AND LIMB to vacate the Paradisical Communist Regime..... and fleeing like their lives depended on it .....into the Despised.....everyman for himself..... west Germany,..... then it is a NO BRAINER, comrade.......
It's the Capitalistic System For Me.

    I rest my case.

Sweatshops may not be pretty but they are the first step on the ladder. My example of South Korea is the living embodiement of where a little free market thinking can get you in less than 30 years. China and india are on a similar path. No point trading with someone who has nothing to offer so these countries got there act together. The failing african states will be next in line.

protectionism is creeping back onto the agenda in america and it just raises prices and narrows choice. Inefficient in everyway. Perhaps the tories will move away from 'buy british' as a core economic policy this time around.

    Plato:

Possibly in the next few hours, but for the moment save to say that London Road has actually said it for me in a sense:

Corporations have a duty to their shareholders to maximise profit. More than a duty, in fact; there IS a legal framework for shareholders who wish to sue the corporations in which they hold shares if those corporations decide NOT to maximise profit.

This duty to maximise profit is a LEGAL DUTY, therefore corporations which not pursue the making of profit with the utmost vigour can fall afoul of the law.

Not every group of shareholders in the world behaves this way, or would, as not every corporation in the world ruthlessly follows this logic to the fore - although it is hard to think of one which does not - but the legal position is very clear on this.

THE FIRST AND ONLY DUTY OF THE CORPORATE ENTITY IS TO MAXIMISE PROFIT FOR ITS SHAREHOLDERS.

That means that the corporate entity has no other guiding principle - in some cases, some celebrated and infamous cases, not even the law of the land.

Also, lets not forget how many global corporations employ lobbyists, bribe politicians, subvert legal systems and bend the tax code to keep the margins high. Numerous companies around the world have shifted their headquarters from countries with strict laws to other nations where they can underpay staff, pollute the environment, break free from regulations and avoid tax.

Do you think this happens because the directors are evil people?

Of course not. It happens because the corporate entity exists in a world where this action is NECCESSARY in order to fulfill that first and primary responsibility.

A scene from the outstanding film "The Corporation", might clarify the matter somewhat. The maker interviewed Sam Gilbara, the former CEO and Chairman of Goodyear and asked him how he balances personal values with those of the corporate entity. Gilbara said:

"If you really had a free hand, if you really did what you wanted to do that suited your personal thoughts and your personal priorities, you'd act differently."

Sounds to me like a man who has often had to act outwith his personal set of values as a corporate officer, a man who would have liked to have taken the company in another direction.

Even at BP, one of the leading edge companies in renawable energy, who have a CEO of genuine passion and commitment to global energy efficiency, this "new direction" had to be coached in terms of long-term profit margins rather than as egalitarian, which in part it is.

John Browne and I would have very different views on how we view the corporate entity and on how we view the system of capitalism as a whole, but on the legal responsibility of the corporate entity we are side by side in agreement. His pushing BP into exploring renewables, his rebranding of the name to signify Beyond Petrolium, his efforts at making the company record on emissions one of the best in the world - all of it has been done in the name of maximising profit.

Browne has simply found an ethical way to go about it.

Don't get me wrong, I am not on here banging the drum for BP or any other company, but Browne has at least TRIED to find a way of limiting the damage the corporate entity does in the context of his own position within one.

Some assertions I have to challenge now:

"If this was the case half of Scotland would be turned into an open-cast mine, for example."

How, exactly, would that be profitable? There would be a public relations backlash for one, not to mention numerous legal problems to get around, all of which would severely limit the ability of the company to do profitable business. Not a good example of the point.

"They do not have a duty to exploit all assets to maximum potential regardless of every other factor."

Correct, in the sense that although not bound by the same legal ropes as bind a person, the corporation is nevertheless prohibited from certain actions - but this does NOT stop many of them from violating the law.

    And finally, to Citibhoy:

The myth that socialism has failed every time it has been attempted is oversimplified nonsense, and it largely depends on what you mean when you use the term itself.

Are you referring to Communism? Cuba has done rather well under that system, with near full employment, a free health care system of a standard comparable to the best the capitalist world has to offer and an education system which has some of the highest literacy rates in the region.

Or are you referring to democratic socialism? The SPD in Germany and the Labour Party here at home have done fairly well in recent years, both in electoral terms and in terms of SOME of the impacts they have had on their societies.

The Irish Labour Party, founded by James Connelly as the Irish Trade Unions Congress believes in democratic socialism. So does the Israeli Labour Party, who's leader Yitzhak Rabin almost restored some semblance of order to the Middle East before he was assasinated.

Or do you mean libertarian socialism, which hasn't been tested by a government yet (although the results would be extremely funny!)?

Revolutionary socialism, on the other hand, WAS tried briefly in the Soviet Union, but was overthrown by Stalin and his band, who set up their own version of the Communist ideal.

Perhaps THEY are the ones you mean.

(This almost WAS an epic after all .......... no more talk of politics from me!!)

Paul thanks for responding, however i cant see how it was inevitable, maybe what you were getting at is you seen it was inevitable because you knew the ilk of the board, rather than the actual event was inevitable?

Have any other clubs done this?

I dont think i can actually put into words my feelings on the subject, im still in shock.

Have Celtic not opened up a cna of worms here though?

What happens to Celtic supporters clubs Flags, will they be subject to the same policy?

Take the names Celtic, Bhoys, Huddle, will these be next?

I cant understand the thinking behind this, forget all the Celtic is our club, Fergus McCann was adamant about that when he sold up, but what good could come from banning it?

I cant see a single thing, just after the board get credit from all of those (me included) who are more ofren than not critical of the board are giving them credit, just when we mellow and beging to learn how to direct praise in that particular direction again after years of absence, they go and do something like this, and once again alienate them from the fans

The board are saying this is our club, not yours, if you use the crest of your club that you, your father and your father have supported and spent huge chunks of your annual income on, we will come down on you (and then some of them once they are not receiving a pay cheque from Celtic anymore, will stop pretending they do)

    Addis:

Excellent answer (may I call you comrade?) my friend, but try this one on for size:

Cuba is an economic mess. Yes, an economic mess. It has a fine education and healthcare system, but it is an economic mess all the same. Not the fault of Fidel and his son, nor of the Communist Party which runs that island.

The fault, comrade, of the decades long American embargo on that island.

That America is the preferred destination of many of these unfortunates is just one of the many hideous ironies in the whole horrendous history of the conflict between that place and the U.S. of Self Interest.

Mexico is also an economic mess, but this has as much to do with government corruption as it has to do with American firms squeezing Mexican ones dry.

Speaking of which, NAFTA is about free trade, NOT fair trade - and in that battle the little guy will ALWAYS get booted - Mexico being the little guy.

And yes, again, it causes people to flee right into the arms of the very country who's economic policies are partly responsible for the mess. Does the line not say "Give us your tired, your poor and your hungry?"

So why all the complaining from middle America about immigrants taking their jobs? Ain't that what the system is SUPPOSED TO DO?

It's a tough break when those you've stamped all over until they fit the "tired, poor and hungry" criterion take your word literally on it, ain't it?

As for East Germany and the old Soviet Union - I too would have tried to climb the wall, or died trying, in order to escape a system where you had no choice about what to say, what to do or even, if they could have gotten away with it, what to think.

Yeah, I would have fled for freedom's sake myself. But in doing so I would have balanced the logic of the equation:

    The freedom to be homeless.
The freedom to have no job.
    The freedom to starve.

In a society based on the ability to pay, unlike in the Eastern block where a job and a home were a right of every citizen, those particulars would HAVE to have be considerations before I made a move.

I would still have done it though, because I do believe that certain rights are fundamental, that certain freedoms should be non-negotiable.

That's why I support the fans right to sing their songs, after all.

    Defence rests.

Capitalism for all it's faults has helped more people to a better standard of living than any other societal structure ever has in the past. It is far from perfect but it gets us by.

We can talk about the blood of the workers or indeed the tedious film The Corporation (numb arse in the GFT that day) but I fear James that once reality bites you on the bum you will behave differently. When you have children of your own to feed, a mortgage to pay, you may realise that for all your ideals, real life actually involves compromises, you may find that working for a bureucratic NGO is as much about fun as working for Satan directly.

There are a few more examples out there, not least the reproduction of fixture lists on fans sites. The leagues have pursued this matter to the dismay of many.

I have spoken to people who have been gutted to receive such correspondence from Celtic, and have sympathised, but it was clear to me this would come.

Look out next for the photographs. These in use of web sites are mostly someone else’s I.P. All it takes is a few letters, together with an invoice to cause problems.

No wife and kids yet, true, but when that time comes it will come within the confines of the world I live in - i.e. the woman who turns my head all the way will probably (not definately, not going to second guess Fate or anything) care about the same things as I do, believe in the same things as I do and want the same things as I do, because I can't concieve of meeting here in any other circles but the ones I spend most of my time in.

It's the natural way to life and the way that IMO will always work best. Even if some do suffer.

Socialism IMO is one of those things that if it could work would be great. In fact it's probably similar to what heaven would be like...

But heaven isn't on this earth and isn't run by a mere mortal and surely that should be a sign that socialism just won't work whilst humans are in charge?

    What is wrong with Socialism?

Far less than is wrong with capitalism. Any ethos that actively encourages dancing on the backs of the bruise is fundamently corrupt. Any society where 7% of the people can control 84% of the wealth is ethically corrupt. Capitalism encourages treating everything with contempt - Tesco and ASDA and the other major "food" corporations sell us meals laced with unhealthy ingredients in the name of making a profit. They enslave farmers by paying them a pittance, further encouraging the use of battery farming methods which in turn promote cruelty to animals.

Any society where a company turning a massive profit can make 10,000 workers redundant is ethically corrupt. The company was making a profit. Profit over people is the ethos and aim of capitalism. It's not every man for himself, it's every man against the other. How do you stop your competitor drowning? Take your foot of his neck - that's the jolly truth behind capitalism. A society where the poor get nothing and the rich protect themselves. The rich get decent food, healthcare and education. What do the poor get? Progressively poorer.

You mention Cuba. Good choice. A country that spends more of it GDP on housing, heathcare and education than any other developed country.

What else is good with Cuba? Less human rights abuses than either the US or the UK! Strange that a country under dictatorship would actually value it's citizens a little more highly than our "developed" countries.

What else....The fact that America has kept Cuba artificially poor for 40 years? Why? Something to do with sugar, right? Cuba has coped and developed in spite of the US "sanctions". THe fact that the US have acted unlawfully in denying Cubans vital medicines is brushed under carpet - something that happens when the perpetrator is also the worlds policeman. And let's not forget the US's terrorist funding. The State sanctioned murder attempts. Trying to kill Castro when it became apparent that Cuba couldn't be cowed by the prospect of less money.

I have never heard of Boat-Loads of Americans heading across the 90 miles of Ocean.... to the promised land of Fidel Castro....have you? No way, Hosay!

You don't see boat loads of Americans trying to get into Cuba? That's because you've sown your eyes shut. A common thread in Capitalists. See no evil, hear no evil, speak lots of it. Take a look at the black market in education, where wealthy americans are trying to sneak their children into med schools in Cuba because the teaching is so good.

Quite the reverse? You got it..... People are like that you know.....they know a good thing when they see it...... and the good ole Capitalistic U.S.A...sure looks mighty fine, mighty, mighty fine........

BTW, did you know that Cuba also lead the vanguard in respect to giving women equal rights? There is no glass ceiling in Cuba - everyone is equal. And I'd rather be equal than rich. I promise you.

Capitalism isn't the root of all evil, padrone, don't ever think I believe that it is. What I have been talking about is the corporate entity and its legal status.

Capitalism's core belief that the markets can take care of everything is plain wrong though, that is why I am in favour of the welfare state, of corporations being obligated to show some social responsibility and of tough laws which place limits on their behaviour when that behaviour is damaging or dangerous.

Tough laws. Not weak ones like at present.

Also, the corporation MUST lose its legal status as a person. This is extremely dangerous and damaging.

If the system CAN'T be reformed, down it should come. But I am a democratic socialist, not one of those ranting, raving, down-with-the-flag, backs-against-the-wall-chaps-blindfolds-on-AIM-FIRE types who wants the Red Flag over The Palace (although I would not object if the Palace itself was turned into luxury housing for single mothers on benefits).

But the system NEEDS reforming. If it is not changed then we are all in a lot of trouble.

Addis: There IS a way of selling reform of the system as a matter of self interest. That's one of the reasons I'm studying media, as that message will have to be crafted and sold to the public one day.

There's no doubt that US policy has been disastrous towards Cuba.

But Fidel himself has hardly been much help- first of all hitching his wagon to a decrepit economic basket case like the USSR, and then refusing to face reality when that went a*** over t**. Even the Chinese saw the writing on the wall!

Would be best for all concerned if Fidel finally decided to give his people the choice over which direction there country should go.

If he is so popular, and such a lover of freedom, what is he afraid of?

Also, given the clubs new Nike inspired zeal at brand protection, here is a little solution for those of us who want to square our concience at helping Celtic whilst buying Nike goods - From adbusters.org

    How to uncool a megacorporation . . .

Behind the ubiquitous swoosh lurks the uneasy knowledge that the Nike brand was built on sweatshop labour, obscene profit margins, and big bucks wasted in the creation of bogus corporate cool. It's a dangerous game they've been playing, and it won't take much to make that corporate cool machine blow up in their faces.

Slap a Blackspot over every last logo, brand name, and trademark. Then give the Blackspot treatment to T-shirts, baseball caps, and any other corporate cast-offs in your closet.

Blackspots start popping up everywhere there are Blackspotters – around sneaker stores, inside Niketowns and even in Phil Knight’s Beaverton HQ. No ad agency needed . . . our shareholders and supporters just do it themselves.

Need ideas? Take a look at what other Blackspotters have been up to on the front.

The uncooling spreads across the internet. Start by downloading banners and buttons to display on your own site.

TV Spot - Rejected by FoxStep - Our fifteen-second mindbombs explode on TV networks across the globe. And since we’re selling a product, if they refuse to air out spots, we’ll haul them into court.

Bearing in mind Celtic's new brand protection policy, I'm going to happily blackspot my top. And gaffa tape over the C****ng brand advert on the front of the strip. The crest might get it too depending on how much of a toweringly bad mood I'm in at the time. Then again, maybe not :-) (about the crest I mean)

    Edmoondo,

I'm not sure if you need a politics lesson or a geography lesson. Where is this mythical socialist Norway?

This country has been run by centre-right governments until very recently, when a centre -left coalition came to power. But to call that socialist is grossly inaccurate.

Sweden is a better example of Scandinavian social democracy than Norway, but even here capitalism is the governing economic philosophy.

Specualtion, accumulation, materialism, intellectual freedom, lots of private ownership- all these are characteristic of Norway, as they are of all successful liberal capitalisy democracies.

The people of Norway are not daft. They know a wee dose of social democracy brings the best out of capitalism.

And they know that socialism- public ownership of the means of production- has never worked. Anywhere. Period.

The argument isn't communism v capitalism- that's so last century. We're trying to define how best to manage a mixed economy with fairness and humanity so that we avoid the worst extremes of baronial corporatism and dictatorial despotism.

Well If Caldwell's injured as well as McManus and Bobo didn't travel, we'll be looking at Cuthbert & O'Dea, or Cuthbert & Sno, I would imagine. Mind you, Jarosik's the right height and has a centre half's attitude to moving about the pitch.

Either way, I'm more intrigued than frightened by the prospect of make shift centre halfs. Young players often get their debuts when a team finds itself in extremis. The natural caution of managers tends to prevent them from taking a risk in games against the bottom teams, because they will only ever get criticism if it goes wrong; never praise for their preparation and team planning.

So let's hope Scott or Darren or Evander ( or Jiri????) rise to the occasion tomorrow. Even, if they don't, I hope we get the chance to blood young defenders throughout this season as we know we are thin on the ground for experienced defenders.

    Makes it exciting, No?

To put things into context whilst on a climbing expedition to the Lofoten Islands north of the arctic circle we met some scottish lads in the boozer who were there working injecting salmon with vaccines on the fish farms, now this is the worst possible job in that industry (trust me ive worked on fish farms), now these lads were earning a fortune doing this out there, about £1000 a week in their hands. James Forrest,

When I was at university I was similarly idealistic. However, one of my history lecturers there was a member of the Communist Party back in the 60s. He eventually came around to the way of thinking that Socialism/Communism or whaterver one wishes to describe it as will never work in practise. The main reason for his attitude was that it would always require someone, a government, a dictator to decide who lives where, how much people need to survive, etc. The main problem for him was the question as to who would fulfill this roel? Who would decide who gets to live in Castlemilk (or similar "deprived" areas) and who gets to live in more upmarket areas like Newton Mearns? Could anyone be trusted to make these decisions without becoming corrupted? Highly unlikely!
Also, the main tenent of socialism for him was the phrase "give according to ability, receive according to need". Man by his very nature is a selfish animal, there are those who wouldnt give anything back to society (why should I have to work? Why should I have to do this job instead of that job? etc) and those who would want more than they need (who would inevitably resort to theft, fraud, etc). As such, this minority would eventually ruin the values of the society leading to the eventual breakdown of the system.
I am not saying Capitalism is the best way, just that socialism, whilst a great principle, is not suited to the human race!

I'm saying they are not socialist. I thought that was pretty obvious, particularly given the make-up of both their current governments. And for the other reasons I listed in my reply to Edmoondo (you should probably scroll down a bit).

If you look at Germany or France and see a socialist country I would suggest to you you rally need to do a wee bit more reading on politics and economics.

Spidey, you sum up a lot of material very well. People can't be trusted to do what is right for others only for themselves. That is why governments are needed to create such things as healthcare, police, fire brigade and so on.

Free markets bring truth and productivity and get the most out of the finite natural resources that we have (even workers). The more we produce then the more we can consume. Evolutionary game theory has shown that people will always find the most economic way of living - getting the most for doing the least. The invisible hand needs to wear a very visible glove to balance this most human of occurences.

Anyone know the single biggest institution that has benefitted the most from free market ideology in america?

Taken from CM and it has been going round for years but always nice to read

Glasgow Celtic was a Club that I did not know a lot about when I was
told that Liam Brady had been in touch with Middlesbrough about
acquiring my services in 1991. I knew that they were a big Club with
an illustrious history; the first British team to win the European Cup,and to achieve the amazing feat of winning nine championships in a row.

When I was an apprentice professional footballer at Middlesbrough in the 1980, my youth team coach would eulogise about Celtic and the great
players who had played for the Club. The coach in question was indeed one of the very best ex-Celts; his name Bobby Murdoch.

By the time I left Celtic in 1995, the Club and more importantly the
supporters, had left an indelible mark in my heart, which will never
    leave me.

I feel honoured to have played in "the hoops" and to have given my all for the Club at very difficult period in the Clubs history. It was a volatile time in the East end of Glasgow what with the "sack the board" campaign and the domination of the field of the team from across the
    city.

It was a time of change at Celtic, but what stood firm throughout
all of my time at the Club was the belief the supporters had that good
times were just around the corner and that the Celts would be "singing in the sun" before too long.

Their support of the team on the field was total and the players strived to reward the fans with performances that made you feel as if you were part of a huge family unit - and that feeling of being as one with the supporters could not of been highlighted more than when I was to lose my wife to cancer on new years day 1995.

At a time when my life was decimated, and I was as low as any
human being can get, the love and warmth I will never forget.

Words of support poured in from Celtic folk, from all over the world and
at a time when my life was empty, they helped fill that void with their
    compassion.

So as I said earlier, Celtic will always be 'my club' and I feel very
humble that I played alongside such great Celts as McStay, Nicholas.
Collins, Grant, Bonner and many more, but most importantly that I know
whenever I pulled on the Jersey, I gave my all because I knew what it
meant to the supporter on the terraces, to be proud to be a Celt.

    Take care and God Bless,

    Tony Mowbray Hail, Hail
    FIRST TEAM COACH [Ipswich Town]

Are you saying Norway is socialist? The Norway just above Sweden and below the ice cap?

    The constitutional monarchy Norway?

...is what you said, inferring that because it is a monarchy, it can't be socialist, which I agree with!

I think we are getting confused as to what socialism actually is and the difference between what you think socialism is and what I think it is.

Methinks you are like most capitalists/fascists who's last line of socialist reasoning is "Socialism has never worked". The answer to that being covered here already most eloquently by James Forrest and P8ddy. (BTW calling JF an idealist is also an old capitalist/fascist way of demeaning true socialists.

My personal view of socialism I suppose is what you would call 'left of centre'. My capitalist friend likes to call me a 'commie'. It makes him feel better.

I always remember the tories during the thatcher years (deliberate non-use of the upper-case T there) and lately the major years and what their tactic was to keep Labour out of power. Every time they wanted to refer to the Labour party or even the Libdems, they would spit out the word 'Socialist' with so much venom that it actually became a 'bad word' to most ordinary folk who didn't realise they were being conned.

I referred in a different thread to the fact that in the media-driven world these days, perception is everything. That is precisely why the Labour Party had to change and appear more tory than the tories, or else we would never have got rid of them. The only problem with that is they can't get back to the way they were without losing votes. Again, perception is all.

Just ask old Joe Kennedy regarding his son JFK. "It's not what he IS that's important, it's what he appears to be that is more important" or words to that effect.

Get a book on politics indeed...8)

Thats why I suggested that Brian Quinn names the songs that he refers to. The request to stop came from Brian Quinn so lets stop all the petty skirting around and name names.
And Bhoyfromdacounthell, dont go in a huff.
    P8ddy 1.49pm;
You doubt if Brian Quinn knows what songs are offensive. Again, since It's his request, I suggest he more than anyone would know what he is talking about.Until the offensive songs are named no one can debate if the songs he is refering to are offensive or not.
And surely if the club describe certain songs to be offensive and ask that the support refrain from singing them while on active duty supporting Celtic, then it would only be right and proper to observe the clubs request. They're not making the request for the hell of it.

Man is a corrupter of the Wonderful Green and Silent Earth....

    Excuse me for livin',you guys!

Honestly, the first time I was in the Queens Park... I was bombarded with...

    Please keep off the Grass!

And I was only Three Years old at the time........ sure, I could read.......I was a child Protégé..... brought up proudly on Mother's milk....supplemented of course, by Rusks and Ostermilk( must support the advertisers, ye know!)

That my friend, was the thin end of the wedge.....

The real motto of the Green Party....

    My answer......

Hey Buddy!..... have ye looked at the heavens lately?

As you have wisely pointed out..... Resources have a nasty habit of running out..... Just ask the wife.....when you tell her to expect unexpected company, and she tells you that she not only has nothing to wear..... we are also fresh out of Soda Pop!

So, one hand washes the other.....

The red hot poker of diminishing resources, shall be a sufficient incentive for man to reach for the Stars, and leave behind the depleted and gutted Earth to the earth worms etc.....which should please the Green Party.......

So everybody will make out like a bandit.

    See how Capitalism works....
    It is all there....

Self Preservation..... Self Interest....... Self Agrandisement....

And who is Last on the Space Ships is a Nig Nog!!!( can I say that?)

So, no need to fret any more......

Our Maker had it figured out, right from the git go.......

Now, one sees why the Stars are right there in front of our nose... if one walks with one's nose in the air....as all good little Capitalists, should!

Just started to read the posts. Who are that Hertz lot trying to kid? Carve up ... my Jacksie!!!! I too was at that game and we ran amok. St. Mirren couldn't cope with the pace and one touch passing of the Celtic team. We had been miles behind Hertz in the league and clawed the points back game by game. I remember in the same week Werder Bremen had to do the same thing in Germany. They had to rely on opponents slipping up and had to win their own game by something like 5 goals. I think they won 6-0 and took the Bundeslig(?) title.

As a previous poster said Hertz only needed a draw to take the title and they couldn't do it. They are the biggest LOSERS of all time.

In 1965, on the same day Celtic beat Dunfermline 3-2 in the Cup Final. Hertz played the last match of the season at Tynecastle against Kilmarnock. It was the Championship decider. In those days it was goal average rather than goal difference that was used to separate teams who were on the same points. Both teams had equal points going into the match. Hertz had a superior goal average. They only needed a draw to win the League. They could still win the league if they lost the game by two goals as long as it was a certain type of defeat by two goals eg., 3-1, 4-2,5-3. There was only one result in the whole wide world that this bunch of losers had to avoid ..... a 2-0 defeat. Yes you've guessed it!!!! Final score Hertz 0-2 Kilmarnock.

Centenary year Scottish Cup Semi at Hampden. 89 minutes gone Celtic 0-1 Hertz. 90 minutes Celtic 2-1 Hertz. Looooooooosssssseeeeeerrrrrs! and not very nice people to boot.

Thanks for that last post , but where did you or any of the others ever get the idea that I had some aversion to the making of gigantic sums of money?

Just because I won't work as a cubicle rat in some faceless corporation or prostitute my soul to some conglomorate which will rape and pillage and destroy the planet for the sake of a few shareholders bonus?

Don't assume that I have failed to spot the reality of the global situation; no-one can fight a war without weapons, and sad to say the only way to defeat the present incumbents in the various political high offices of the world is to use their own weapons against them.

I have been involved in the political business for years, and have held a number of offices. I know about electioneering, winning and losing. I know about the intricate system of The Game, the cut and thrust of the battle. I have eaten my share of dirt (and dished out my share) on that particular battlefield.

I'm also acutely aware of the need for MONEY as an adjuant to success in said political game - so don't be so worried. I am not intending to waste either my education or my abilities, such as they are, in a way that cuts off my nose to spite my face.

There are ethical ways to make money. For one, I could write that political satire novel I've often talked about, and for which I've taken a lot of notes (so from the people on this site, believe it or not). I could also crack the documentary film-making game - anyhow, I certainly intend to try.

Not a bad way to earn a decent living, nor a corrupt way.

As for Sean Penn and Mr Clooney, well I wish I had a third of the talent of the former and a fraction of the luck with the ladies of the latter.

Then even I might be happy for once.

But to get back to the football ........

Tommorow we certainly have options, and a whole lot of them. In midfield, I think the game is perfect foil for the Gravesen/Jarosik partnership. That is the high octane central midfield I expect to be utilised in big games this season.

At the back, well it looks as if McManus will make it tommorow, so it's a matter of whether Caldwell is fit to partner him. Again, I am painfully aware of how thin we are stretched in central defence.

Up front, hoo-ha! No such problems!

Whilst the dream-team forward line would be Magic-Jan, I am really loathe to leave out Kenny Miller, as the energy he gives us and the hard work he gets through is a tremendously valuable asset.

For me, I think we should explore, very tentatively, and NOT tommorow, the prospect of three up front for later in the season, with Miller/Magic/JVOH.

Derek Riordan? Well, I am a HUGE fan of Del Bhoy's but he is going to have a helluva hard time getting into strike force.

Wide left, I think, is where he will make his first big impact. Will that be tommorow? With McGeady back on the right, I don't see why not.

Nakamura on the bench. What a substition to be able to make if things get rocky.

Anyone who can argue Rangers midfield or front-line is even close to being as good as ours has obviously been drinking too much of Murray's finest red.

I agree with EDB. I think it's a good thing that the team does not pick itself.

Imagine what it's like for Jimmy C trying to come up with a game plan to counter ours; so many eventualities to cover.

The other point is that we still seem hung up on the starting eleven; the game lasts 90 minutes and is about more than 11 ghuys.

I also agree with the post earlier from Setting Free The Bears (6.26). It would be interesting to see how Cuthbert or O'Dea would cope when pitched in at the deep end. Didn't do John Kennedy any harm in the early months of 2004, Nou Camp and all.

Come on the baby Hoops (and Tommy G).

    Noel

Whoever took that video of wee Shaun's goal must sit exactly where I sit only on the away sides dugout side rather than the home side.

Don't know if I could be doing with the high pitched screams... Is that you?:P

Right, I've only read Paul's bit.
This may have been said between then and now but after reading 'our' Tommy's words all I can say is:

Hail Hail The Celts are here
What the hell do care, what the hell do we care?
Hail, Hail, the Celts are here now.
For it's a grand old team to play for. For it's a grand old team to see. And if you know its history it's enough to make your heart grow. (the first) nine in a row

    EDB:

Is there something going on between Riordan and Strachan, then? Cause he was dropped from the squad against Hibs too.

I hope everything is okay there.

Noel - 8.57 one of your best video links. Watched it about 15 times - really takes me back to being in the jungle when we scored against them - what a feeling and what a goal.

Watched the Graveson press conference. This guy exudes confidence which will spread to the rest of the bhoys. There will be nothing less than 100% from the team when he is around. First class attitude.

JonG - injuries allowing, agree with your selection for tomorrow and think we'll see the same against MU, but with JVoH alone up front.

Can't wait for the game tomorrow - 6.30am here :)

    Hail Hail

Initially thought it weird having all this non-football talk but it has been high quality reading.

James Forrest our politics may be quite different but your views on capitalism are not that different to mine and your agruments are strong for a young-haund.

For me JarosikPark put it perfectly ;-

Capitalism only works in a moral framework unfortunately the moral framework is in low demand.

except my view is that it is non-existant in the vast majority of large companies whose path to globalisation appears to be their only concern and their people are not.

Edmoondo - I may prefer the relative safety of the CMD Arete to a slidy North Face but thats only because the prospect of ice climbing scares the bahoogles out of me! Cousin who does it seems normal though :-)

Anyhow my main point - has anyone on the home direct debit scheme had their Euro ticket for Copenhagen yet?

Glad with the possible Portuguese nonsense that we are not playing Benfica next week..

And REALLY looking forward to the game tomorrow - Scotland games were good for a change but now its the REAL DEAL

I mean to say earlier, why is there so much discrepancy between Paul's account of the question-and-answer session with Tommy G today and the one Hector Bandido has put up on Etims?

Which is the true version of events?

I think we should be told.

Miller will score tomorrow. Gravesens presence will force KM to right place, right time (first half hour).

    Utopian IX
    No keeper,
    Hegel, Russell, Corbusier, More
    Marx, Lennon, Engels
    Huxley, Pankhurst, King

and looking forward to some South Indian delicacies that CSEB will know all about!

Hope you find somewhere to watch the game, but whatever happens, please put in a word for us with the real St Martin. He's been exerting his influence on Scotland since his encounter with St Ninian when our man was on his way home from Rome. I'm sure he remembers it well.

It's probably to your advantage that we're up against Blighty's finest. They always get covered. There's got to be an English pub with Sky in Tours, surely.

Used to like travelling down to Somerset Park in the 70's. Remember Shuggie scoring a hat-trick there in a 7-2(?) win. Hugh Sproat was a character who wore blue against us and green against the darnel. Good goalkeeper. Mind a decent Ayr centre-forward, Danny something or other, old-fashioned battering-ram type. Loved the atmosphere, much healthier than Rugby Park.

    Talking of Kilmarnock,

I remember being at a game there in the same decade. We were shoved into the middle of the enclosure and had Killie fans at the back of the shed and Killie fans in front of us. This was the era of the brown glass cider bottle. Bottles were hurled at us with miscalculated trajectory. I remember a bottle landing on the head of a Kilmarnock fan below and to the front of us. The bottle bounced off his crown and landed with a smash before he collapsed in a delayed reaction.

    Happy days

    Celtic 3-1 Aberdeen

C'mon the CCSC (Capitalist Celtic Supporters Club)

    Capitalist and proud!!!!

Capitalist - A person who derives a living by investing sums of money in enterprises managed by him or herself or by others.

Capitalists employ socialists, that’s the way of the world.

Speaking as someone who runs their own business, I can’t be ar**d with socialists, “capitalists” as some seem to like to call the people who actually earn the country money, are the ones who make the country tick. As opposed to the “ideal world socialists” who sit on their fat ar**s and do feck all for the country.

I used to be a socialist, then I grew up.

Show me a socialist country, sorry state that has succeeded with a socialist agenda and I’ll show you a handsome hun.

Within the next 3 years – Labour out, Conservative In……Thank Feck

We can get the country back on its feet again

don't know about corbusier. I'd have Trotsky on the wing, Connolly in goal, and MacLean as centre-forward.

Heard this eejit on Radio Clyde tonight telling us catagorically that Lennon and Gravesen cannot play together.........

Along with Gordon Strachans comments of the previous day stating "anyone who says that Neil Lennon and Thomas Gravesen cannot play together has not got a clue and obviously does not understand the game......."

    I agree with Gordon........
