Rangers gaping financial hole gives Celtic historical income advantage

Now that Celtic have released their Preliminary financial results for last season, and Rangers have released their audited accounts, a comparison of the clubs relative financial footing provides a compelling look into the future.

Last season Rangers turnover reached £61.1m, up £6m from the previous season as a result of their Champions League run. By comparison, Celtic’s turnover was £57.8m, remarkably, only £3.3m less than Rangers, despite not having a European gate (the Artmedia game was on the season book).

The comparison becomes more interesting when you look at the figures Rangers give for their Continuing Operations (now that retail operations have been sold to JJB).

Last season, Continuing Operations generated £43.4m, up from a corresponding figure of £34.4m during the previous season, when Rangers reached the Uefa Cup group stage (which they hope to emulate this season).

With Champions League income, this season, Celtic will turnover at least £70m. Rangers turnover this season will not be far away from the £34.4m income they generated from Continuing Operations in 2005.

Net Operating Expenses (the cost of running the club without wages and certain other variable costs) are comparable. Rangers recorded £18m for 2006, Celtic recorded Operating Charges at £19m for 2005 (the 2006 figure will be released in the final audited accounts, due shortly).

With Net Operating Expenses of £18m, and turnover that will be close to £34.4m, Rangers will only have £16.4m available to pay for football operations and interest. A figure which explains why so little of the £18m received from JJB went towards signing new players.

This compares to Celtic’s Operating Charges of £19m (which includes non-staff retail costs). Celtic do not release a figure for retail-only staff costs, however, it is likely to be close to the £2.6m Rangers detail in their accounts, which, if added to Celtic’s Operating Charges, would give Celtic a core operating cost of £21.6m including retail staff costs.

On an anticipated turnover of £70m, these costs would leave Celtic with £48.4m for football operations and interest.

In recent years, an enormous gap has opened up in key income streams between the two clubs, which resulted in Rangers only turning over £3.3m that Celtic last season, despite reaching the knock out stages of the Champions League.

This season will see the gap exaggerated in the other direction, as Celtic gain Champions League income and Rangers do not, however, on the assumption that Celtic and Rangers perform similarly in Europe in future (a possibility I am only prepared to consider in theory), Celtic have a built in financial advantage possibly reaching tens of millions of pounds each year.

My friends in Celtic, I have, on occasion, alluded to my belief that Celtic are destined to enjoy a Generation of Domination of football in Glasgow. This concept does not sit comfortably with many who have been scarred by our years in the desert, but financial outlook for both clubs should be plain to see.

With a smaller stadium, capable of generation less money, a brand that generates less commercial income and now having sold their retail rights for the next decade, Rangers have structural limitations on income growth stretching a decade or more before them.

Celtic have never know such a financial advantage in their 118 year history, the Generation of Domination is real.

as compelling as the article is, this advantage needs to be used as a platform for european success it would be small minded to just think about being better than them, we have always been a bigger team than them and always will be so europe is our promised land!

I agree with Edmoondo ,they do need a sugar daddy with deep pockets to turn this around but who is out there that they can call upon?
Paul 67 maybe this has been asked and I've missed it, our debt was 9mill what is the effect of Lennoxtown on our levels of debt, and did our accounts include the 15mill from the recent share issue, so this money is not set aside untouched to pay for Lennoxtown?
May sound obvious but the less debt the less we pay in interest and more to spend on the team.
Great post cant wait to they go belly up, gloating is not a nice attribute but I think most of us on here would allow ourselves that after the lean years of the late 80's and early 90's.

    Hi Paul,
An interesting if bleak article from my own point of view and to be honest if things were to remain that way your predictions may well be pretty close to right, however there are some circumstances that could change it. As Edmoondo has already pointed out, a change of owner at Ibrox would introduce an unknown into the equation, another though at the present it looks unlikely would be either regime change at Celtic perhaps leading to money being taken from the club and given to the board as shareholders. Another could be the a take-over with the present share price making the club look an attractive investment. Of the three my money would be on the first, with a new owner giving rather than taking money from Rangers. The future may be bright but it's not yet written in green and white :-)

Excellent financial analysis as usual. I'm not very numerate and halfway through articles like these I feel my eyes are about to pop out with confusion so I need your help on one point. If Rangers' continuing operations total went up to £43.4m from £34.4m the previous season by virtue of their CL run why do you think their turnover will stay at this sort of level when you said earlier they had turned over more than £60m this year. Is it because the JJB money was included in that figure and they won't have that high a figure from now on?
I certainly hope you are right about all this, however, I fear Joe Lewis or Tom Hunter or some other rich stormtrooper will end up putting his hand in his pocket and rendering your prediction almost obsolete.

FrankieBhoy :- I honestly don't have a clue, there are a few interlocking set ups at Ibrox, the football team, Murray Park, the catering business etc it's beyond my knowledge what a fair price would be, my own thoughts are it wont be so much the buying price as the level of investment my own thoughts would be an initial investment in the team of around £15M used wisely this would give a solid base allowing for less (though still substantial) investment each year. If something like this doesn't happen then I can foresee a re run of the nineties only this time the money and glamour being in the east of the city rather than the south side. Sorry I'm unable to give a better answer but I'm one of these people who depend on folk like Paul explaining the financial side of things.

I've always thought that Murray would be looking for a large sum for 'his' club. I could be wrong.

I just don't see anyone putting in tens of millions of pounds to buy then finance Rangers. With that sort of money you could buy a club in England and aim for the EPL.

There's always the chance of there being a super rich Rangers supporter out there but I doubt it.

    Paul,

Is it at all possible that Le Guen is another "Boumsong"?

Realising that one of Europe's most sought after coaches was about to dip his toe back into football, Murray jumps at the opportunity of signing him up on the free then punting him for a profit after one year?

Was it not a strong rumour last year that Rangers had in fact lined up Graham Roberts as their next manager? Something, I think, you were adamant on Paul?

I believe there is more to this possibility and deserves a bit more consideration.

Next summer, Murray will probably come out with something like "The offer was too good to refuse", "Le Guen didn't bring the success we anticipated".

Is this why the JJB money hasn't been used? To 'handicap' Le Guen? After all if he succeeds how can Murray justify (to the hoards) punting him?

I believe Rangers cant afford to keep a manager of Le Guen's quality, just the same as they couldn't afford to keep a player of Boumsong's quality ['snigger'-Ed] and he represents nothing more than a quick 'free' buck.

Maybe just one or two coincidences… maybe not.

interesting analysis which basically confirms my own analysis. As I have said before you have to admire the Mints PR. Who would have thought that after such a bad year, selling off the family jewels and then not giving the new manager any real money then he would still be getting positive reports. I know he has willing Lapdogs but the fact that everybody can deny that the promised moonbeams and the £48 million JJB money were promised takes some doing.

Our task is too ensure that we maintain this advantage and continue to develop our income streams particlularly overseas (I can't keep buying my son new strips, he is growing too fast).

The Darnel became too compacent and were mugged by MON. We should ensure that this does not happen to us.

I'm assuming the £18m received from JJB is what took the figure over £60m - taking that figure and the CL money away would leave their T.O. at the mid £30m mark as Paul said - I was just checking this was the case.

I was having probs with the site yesterday. The article was saying it had over 100 comments but my screen only showed the first 6 or 7 then it was blank. No amount of refreshing, restarting or punching my laptop would help. Seems ok today, touch wood.

I completely agree about the brand issue - despite the pre-season tour - I've always felt we are more of a "global" brand, if that's the correct term.

Can I ask what is in it for the person who buys Rangers?

Unless he (she?) is a philanthropist, how will they earn an adequate return on capital?

    The EPL?

If that was on the horizon, why is Murray, who we are told is a businessman of some renown, selling out now?

Paul, interesting figures. May I point out that Rangers are guaranteed at least £3m per annum over the next 10 years from JJB.

Also, in terms of cash flow, not having a retail operation will free up some working capital.

It will not change your conclusion, however. We have a significant financial advantage at the moment.

Chennaiseabird - Le Guen can live of his rep for a while yet. His excuse will be he was given no money.

I would love to join the G.O.D brigade but in all honesty, Rangers could still have a few cards up their sleeves. Or even still, if Le Guen was to unearth a few gems then something as simple as that could shift the balance on the park. It’s been done before.

From Celtic's point of view it is all about sustainability which is great. We need to use the advantages of that sustainable spend to provide sustainability by:

~ Signing our best players on long term deals
~ Having replacements for key players lined up in advance
~ Investing in top scouting resources
~ Adding to the quality of the team on a season by season basis with prime players (24-27)
~ Investing in the 2 weakest parts of the team once a season

All realistic goals and certainly not beyond us under current conditions.

The last two seasons has seen us make great strides towards our ultimate goal of being a top European team again but that has only provided us with a platform. Next Wednesday will provide a great benchmark for the club in terms of playing ability, the analysis of this game cannot be underestimated. There will be positives to be taken from a defeat.

    TGH,

Excellent post though somewhat Machiavellian don't you think?
Even if they were compensated for the loss of PLG the fans would go mental if they lost him after just a year even if he didn't win them much. The perceived wisdom regarding PLG is that he generally stays for 3 years - takes the first year to build a team and size up the opposition then delivers for the next two years. I've always been surprised at the notion of PLG having to prove himself in the SPL and that managing TFOD is a stepping stone to the Premiership. Wenger didn't have to do this and he was far more obscure when he arrived than PLG is in English circles.
I find the idea that they were lining up Graham Roberts as manager both delightful and hilarious. I imagine after his recent transgressions at Clyde this is unlikely to happen but if it did I think I would would rub my hands together so gleefully that any future attempts to read my palm would be rendered impossible.

Old Firm - The Rivals Documentary

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am writing to invite you to participate in a documentary that I am producing
about the rivalry between the great Scottish teams of Rangers and Celtic for
    Independent Sports Media.

The film will explore the historic differences between the two teams and
their battle for ascendancy over the past one hundred and twenty years. It
will not only look at the on the pitch rivalry but also that of the fans off
the pitch, for whom the teams form such a large part of their identity.

While the darker sides of this rivalry cannot be avoided, the central
message of the film will be the importance of the rivalry to fans of both
sides, and a celebration of this and some glorious football matches.

I hoped very much that you would be able to spare a small amount of your
time to contribute your views and passions for you team.

I am in Scotland from Tuesday afternoon on 5th Sept to Thursday morning on 7th Sept and would really like to meet up with some Rangers fans to hear your views.

We plan to film the majority of the interviews in the week surrounding the
Auld Firm game of 23rd September 2006, and hoped you would be
available then to talk to us.

We will also be filming in London and returning to Scotland on other dates
if the first shoot is inconvenient.

I can be reached on telephone number 020 7735 5105 or via
    email at diane@whatismine.com

I look forward to hearing from you.

Still incredibly low, even with a run to UEFA cup qtr finals they will be skint. Losing to Hearts at Tynecastle was a win win situation for us. Extra CL tv money thru Hearts failure and unprecedented affect on rangers ability to compete finacially.

i haven't posted on here for a while for one reason or another and one thing that has always annoyed me has been this insistance on the 'generation of domination' thing. yes rangers are in a poor state but if one thing has been constant over the last 10 years or so is that Celtic have always failed to put rangers away. we're like a cautious boxer who jab's the head off a guy and is a mile ahead on points yet leaves his chin out to dry in the 12th round and gets folded up like a deck chair. when we stopped 10 IAR, we lost Wim because of the board. during and after the seville year we failed to back MON and it cost us 2 leagues, Champions League progess and maybe winning the UEFA Cup. we should be going for 7 IAR this season, not 2! i applaud the recent signings we made and the board must be given credit but the way i saw it we weren't signing Graveson until we had the Petrov cash in the bag. the board being cautious as ever. i was never asking them to break the bank but i feel we're always gonna be middle of the road in terms of finances which means we're always gonna be close to getting that haymaker from rangers and maybe hearts. PLG is a good manager and maybe what he has at ibrox is enough to win a title. we won it with an average side last season. if they get a decent european run that can generate funds and attract investment. i would compare celtic these days to charlton were i live in london. charlton rose like a phoenix, rebuilding their stadium and establishing themselves as a regular premiership side and they remain resolutely solvent and would never contemplate going into debt. but they are always gonna be mid-table side who will loose their best players (parker to chelsea) as they are not getting a challenge. that is celtic and our chances in the Champions League. the charlton fans had a great couple of seasons when west ham got relegated and were millions in debt. they really took the p**s out of them and said they were now the dominant football force in south east london. but look at things now and what happened to west ham when they got a decent manager in place. promotion, cup final, europe and look at their recent signings. charlton fans aren't laughing now. they're getting frustrated at the middle of the road situation their club is in and has been for a while. rangers are our west ham and are you as a celtic fan gonna be happy with things if we constantly just make up the numbers in the champions league. i know facts and figures are important in modern football but ultimately what happens on the patch of grass that matters. as things stand we are 1 point ahead in the league and not playing that well. be cautious of what you wish for folks, it may not be all that brilliant!

Paul, thank you for the most lucid exposition on the financial status of both clubs. It would appear that bouguets are in order for all concerned with special mention for the efforts of David Murray. The term Generation of Domination will sit a little more easily with me now as I shall preface it with the word Financial. All that remains to be done is for the manager and players to reflect that superiority on the playing field (piece of cake ). It is almost certainly our Irish history of emmigration and struggle for equal rights status that makes me uneasy with a term about which I detect an odour of hubris(the 1970 E.C. final always flashes before my mind). At any rate it has frequently been remarked here that we have a tendency to shoot ourselves in the foot when we are in a position of strength.I fervently hope that as the silverware accumulates and my fear recedes that I will be able to profess an unambiguous belief in G.O.D.In the meantime I shall keep the faith and remind myself that supporting the club is a journey rather than a destination.

TrueTim, 10:15, Le Guen may surprise us, but he will not close the £30m annual income gap between the clubs.

There are no guarantees that Celtic will win every league, but money always determines long term success.

    Welcome Georgiebhoy67.

Edmoondo 10:14, Rangers fans are privately hoping for a sugar daddy, but look at the figures and consider just how much money could need to be ploughed in each year to achieve parity.

Dessybhoy, 10:31, the £15m share issue is not considered ‘income’ on our profit and loss accounts. It is (principally) a balance sheet transaction.

Lennoxtown has only marginally impacted debt in the figures released.

Edward 10:32, as I alluded above, a sugar daddy remains the only exit route, but with the level of commitment now needed due to the long term structural limitations on income, I will be surprised to see this.

Remember also…… (and this one is important)

Rangers intangible assets play an important role in the MIH accounts. Murray would need to realise a huge premium on the share price before he could afford to sell.

Keepthefaith, the JJB money is a one off, and will need to be accrued in the profit and loss account. I know this is not a full explanation, but while the cash came in now, this money will have little impact on the P&L.

    Bhoyfaethebul, :-)

Play it careful, and we will maintain a lead. I have another article coming on how Rangers blew a similar advantage.

Belfast Bhoy, 10:54, in their accounts, Rangers provide information on what their accounts would look like without the now discontinued retail division.

For season 2004-5 (when they reach the Uefa Cup group stage), this mean turnover of £34.4m. Their figures, not mine.

Good to hear from you Peterm1711.

Lovejoy, ironically, their debt position is going to be one of the good news areas they have. Expect low.

Leabgarrow, 11:07, £34.4m is “awfully low”, this is my whole point. Fortunately you do not need to take my word for it, go to the Rangers web site, download their accounts, and see for yourself.

GM, the £3m p.a. Rangers will receive from retail will be included in their Continuing Operations.

Interesting article as usual Paul. It seems that the much maligned strategies of Brian Quinn and Eric Riley are now paying dividends in the growth of our revenue streams and simultaneous cost reductions.

However I cannot see this massive gap between ourselves and Rangers continuing for too much longer. I cannot see much growth in TV income for Celtic (both local and Champs League); I think that if Celtic bring out any more strips in the next year then even the most ardent of the midnight-queuers at the Celtic superstore may think they are being exploited and spend less; we are spending more money than them which should bring in better players and more wins but is never guaranteed. I also think Rangers will get stronger under Paul le Guen (much as we all like to stick the boot in, I think he will prove to be a decent manager) and may well challenge for the league and consequently champions league spot.

Having said that playing a wee bit of the devil's advocate here and think that we could have the SPL by the cajones for the forseeable and that is no bad thing. I expect us to maintain an advantage over them in income but I dont think it will be quite as vast a difference between the two clubs as it may be this year.

Money is no guarantee for success, although it certainly helps. Lets hope we do what Elvis Costello wished on Maggie Thatcher but lets not think just because we have them over a barrel just now it guarantees success for the next ten years- although by God I wish it did.

    True Tim.

Surely if Paul Le Guen is offered a Premiership job in a year or two, it will be on the back of two successful seasons at Ibrox.

If he has two poor seasons, then that would deminish his appeal to the premiership teams.

As far as I am concerned, Tim, I hope he fails miserably in each of his three years at Ibrox.

The premiership do not want losers. Let him fail and stay.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

Murray does not only have to worry about the intangible asset he carries in the account he also has to worry about the corresponding debt from the last share purchase when he transferred the £50M fron Rangers to MIH.

Edward has already highlighted the significant income stream that leaves Ibrox weekly into other MIH companies. Therefore MIH would have a write off of an asset (£50M plus) and a relatively significant downturn in business or at very least I would suggest contracts renegotiated at a more competitive rate.

Unless they can convince Hunter to publicly come out (him, Chick or Dougie first?) and put his money in or find a compliant Russian oligarch the Moonbeam is a long way away.

What made me laugh, was the playing staff (asset) value.

    Anyway ...
    More forcing issue.

Article 17 of FIFAs new rule.
It applies to third year of 4/5 year contracts - is this why Celtic now use the 3 year with 1 year option?

We need to look through curent staff, evaluate and remedy.

Stan dones us a big favour by signing the new one.

Once i get this 'Catcher in the Rye' read I reckon I could come up with a few more 'facts' to support my idea. :))

I dont reckon Graham Roberts will be the man now, but he was definitely a name in the hat earlier this year (one Paul was dead sure on)... as was/is Terry Butcher [go get some experience Terry and we'll see you next year :)].

As for having to prove himself in the SPHell, your right. It doesn't make sense. In fact about as much sense as Boumsong rejecting Liverpool and Newcastle Utd to join Rangers.... clearly a better club in a better league... blah blah(sic).

Realistically there is ONLY one logical explaination and thats MONEY. And since we all know that Rangers have as much of that as Michael Jackson right now it must a money MAKING venture, not spending!

The first year to build a team..? loan signings and a few pennies here and there isn't exactly awe inspiring building work is it? If this is their re-building year then that would imply that its this year he gets the BIG budget (approx £2M net spend??), if I was a Ger I'd be devastated right now... But I'm not woo hoo!!

    Summer 07 Daily Record headlines-

"Murray masterstroke- PLG Didn't deliver the goods"- Suitor club buying out the remainder of his contract.

"Terry Butcher In as Bluenose mentality needed after European influence leaves club in dissaray"-saving Rangers millions

    Mark my words! :))

Given no future league exit is forthcoming , 10 in a row should be the objective. It isnt as crazy a notion as it seems. Bar the couple of last day failures we'd be well on our way. Given our financial advantage and viable footballing plan 10-a-row must be the objective. Celtic fans seem to treat PLG as the enemies messiah , well I think he'll be found out soon enough. Its all well and good managing a winning club with plentiful cash (Lyon) but when the cash flow is zero and the players are average you're work is severely cut out. A few injuries between now and january could severely damage any thoughts rangers have of coming 2nd. When january comes and we strenghen again , the SPL trophy may indeed be there before Easter again.

If I'm not mistaken, PLG inherited a very good Lyon side from jaques Santini and kept the ship steadied for a couple of years, making inroads into the CL too.

He's since passed the baton to Gerard Houllier who has, despite being an atrocious man manager, kept the success going.

I've not been too impressed with Leguen and his carges so far this campaign but it's early days. 23/9 will give us a better indication if he's the messaih or just a very naughty boy.

And given that Celtic and chaos theory are not strangers to each other I don't think it's time yet to leave the cosy surroundings of the GlassHalfEmpty for the Brandenburger Tor.
And a G.Of.D in Scotland doesn't amount to much,in the grand scheme of things.European success is the top priority, and the credibility that comes with it.We could win the SPL 99in a row,so what?

As far as the Nameless are concerned-
Look at Villa. In complete disarray;seemingly in a spiral of decline, when out of the blue a Megarich American appears, dollars burning a hole in his pocket, and best of all,the Manager best equipped to get the club back on its feet is available!

I am encouraged by these figures as I must admit I thought the appointment of Le Pew would be accompanied by some fairly serious financial backing which, alas, never materialised. I will not underestimate 'le manager' just yet. The time for that is 23/9 when we can see 1st hand what he may be trying to form.

As I have also said before this is the season for Strach (hows that Newarthill Bhoy!) to really show us that he is capable of building his own team for SPL retention and the big boys playground of Europe.

Understands the pressures that come with the job and is a winner in mentality, I can think on a lot worse as future managers

-Massive Club, Massive league, Millions upon Millions to spend, Genuine Champions League winning opportunity, You could make a real name for yourself here Paul [ok the last bit maybe true... for the wrong reasons]

In a pre-season when clubs like Newcastle Utd, Aston Villa, Charlton Athletic, Middlesboro were all on the lookout for a new manager do you not find it even a little bit strange that one of Europes youngest, most up and coming managers resisted EPL overtures to ply his trade in the SPL?

I genuinely do think Murray saw an opprtunity, in exactly the same way he did with Boumsong and seized it.

How much can they make from him? Again, I'm not exactly sure, he's contracted for three years, so at least two years worth @ approx £1M to buy him out (not much I hear you say but when you think of other saleable assets they currently hold, it is a lot) and I'd also expect some sort of fee to be involved as Murray holds the cards- but if there is a hint of Rangers making some desperately needed cash I believe he will facilitate a move for PLG.

He needs the money more than he needs PLG.

interesting reading as usual. one point on the G.o.D. thing is what i used to comfort myself with when we were going through their 9iar years.
We didnt have to be as good as them , only much better than the rest of the teams. This would mean the 4 games vs them would be vital to the swing of the leagues.
Also they have been on a downcurve for 6 years. It has been managed by the media and them so that the fans were not really aware that was the course they were on.
Once they realise this then there could be a positive backlash from the support (similar to our 'always look on the brightside' days). to do this they will have to shed the superiority complex, the reason many follow the club in the first place.
    interesting times ahead

Why do you think Celtic will turnover £12m from champs league and Rangers only made £7m with qualifying last season?

Does the £16.4m highlighted include the released income from the JJB deal..(estimated to be £3m per annum ie £30m/10)? I think you should add this to the £16.4m and also allow for more cash as they will have reduced interest (presuming it is not siphoned off) but apart from that very interesting....

How much do Celtic make(profit) from retail operations per annum?

It is more likely your "saleable assets" concept may work in Rangers' favour though. A disgruntled PLG heads south and immediately comes hunting Sionko, Sebo and Clement and possibly Burke, Boyd and (inexpliquably) Ferguson - all of whom are in contract and require to be bought. TFOD get the cash and offload potentially equally disgruntled players.

Seems like a lot of effort with no guarantee of success to me though.

    Paul,

Thanks for your plain-English analysis. I've never been interested in dry financial information. I'm much more interested in basic facts, the general more than the specific. I trust your analysis will continue to prove correct!

A look at the names on The European Cup suggests football team management will remain the supreme variable within current financial perameters. For example, a third or more of all European Cup winners were unfancied prior to success:

    Ajax x4
    Benfica x2
    Celtic
    Crvena Zvezda
    Dortmund
    Feyenoord
    Forrest x2
    Hamburg
    Marseille
    Porto x2
    PSV
    Steaua

One wonders what an honest roll of honour would look like (given all the tales of curruption)?

However, you first have to be in it (the CL) to have any chance.
I share your view that we are well into an era of domestic domination. The variable that is team managemt (including a big luck factor)has masked the extent of our market lead. If things continue to go our way, we will start to lap our nearest rivals.

Our manager is no fool, he has the skills and the ambition to match the rest of us, board, staff, supporters. Things are coming along very nicely off the park. We have youth development and a policy of bringing top professionals into the team.

Good club management, good team management, good players, a fantastic support. All we need is a bit of good luck.

No one can, any longer, doubt that the board has set us on a course which relies on Champions League qualification every year.

Yes, professional football is a complex business, however, generally speaking,

EVERYTHING is in place (even a left-back!), and
a bit of luck has surely been earned.

    Keep it going Paul!

    Hail! Hail!

I think the futures very bright.the youth system fills me with hope in particular.watching this "special" group come of age together will be very nice.really admire big Beat's and undoubtedly Aidinho could turn into a star but Shaunaldinho is something different,an absolute gem, could turn world class.WE need him tied up asap. Mixing this youthful energy with quality signing's would be deadly to the SPL for years to come.

Although the general concensus is Celtic will stroll this year,I think we will see PLG put something of an effort in.Despite money,he does have a good coaching reputation. The mates still think he'll win league(one backed him to do so by 8 point's,so I backed Celtic also by 8) mostly down to the fact WGS is in charge. He actually might believe what he said, that the squad he assembled was enough;and if that's true then he must have something backing him up.I,however, dont believe it.But if PLG win's that league,he's some pup and big club's will knock.

It will be interesting to see if Scott Cuthbert gets the nod on Saturday in light of Mick's injury scare.

Watching the big lad in the recent Euro u19's, I was struck by his skill, ability and most importantly his pace, the very thing our other CB's lack.

The success of our youth system can only be fully realised when a continuous stream of talent makes it into the first team, a situation that appears more realistic and practical with every year we remain in the less than rarified atmosphere of the SPL.

I'd like to appeal to everyone to have nothing to do with the link Edward posted earlier, which I understand is about being interviewed by someone making a documentary on the O** F***.

We must escape that tag as soon as possible and no good will come to Celtic as a result of any Celtic fan even talking about it.

Let the Huns spout off about how much they hate us and how great it is to beat us. Let them be portrayed as the parochial, bigoted numpties they are because we have bigger fish to fry.

I think today is a good day to raise a glass to Fergus McCann, the man who saved Celtic. When he took over the club we were light years behind Rangers in terms of business organisation, finance, stadium development and team building.

He saved the club from extinction and within four years we were Champions. We had as good a team as them and an even better stadium, all built simultaneously. We also were debt-free when Fergus left and our business operations were infinitely more professional than under the old board.

He also forced Murray's ego-driven spending into overdrive with the results plain to see today. In a very real sense, Fergus, whom Murray took great delight in deriding privately and publicly, has in the end prompted the bankruptcy his publicity-vehicle club.

We departed from the path Fergus McCann set for us and only now are we, I suspect, operating in a manner of which he would approve.

When it comes to finance, I am probably as naive as they come, but from what Paul has written, I think the mega-rich sugar daddy is the best that Rangers can hope for in the short and medium term.

The problem is, I think they are few and far between. The only true sugar daddies I can think of are Jack Walker at Blackburn and Matthew Harding(I think that was his name) for a brief time at Chelsea. Abramovich, Romanov, and the Americans who have taken over at ManU and Aston Villa are in it to make money, not spend it. Anyone who wants to buy Rangers will struggle to make anything for a long time to come.

Why did le Guen come to Rangers? I have a couple of theories. I have read rumours on more than a few sites that he is on 10% of all transfers out of Ibrox, hence all the young Frenchmen from various French reserve teams, who might be sold for a tidy sum in a year or two.

I think he was probably duped by Murray into believing he would have millions to spend.

My wilder theory is that Murray offered him a huge financial package as a publicity stunt, fully expecting him to reject it out of hand. Murray could then bleat about how impressed le Guen was with Rangers, Murray Park etc, but was unwilling to come to Scotland/got the Real Madrid job etc. Imagine Murray's jaw hitting the floor when le Guen said yes and he could not back out? Now he has an extremely expensive manager and no money to spend on decent players, instead of a cheaper manager and slightly more to spend on the playing staff.

As an aside, I think the time to judge le Guen will not be 23rd September. It will hopefully be nearer the end of April (when I hope we have the league sewn up again) because I don't think my nerves can take more last day dramas.

Beach balls in.. 2:18, the difference in turnover is due to a few reasons (as far as I can gather), principally, Rangers no longer have their own retail division and Celtic earn much more from their sponsorship deals.

Fat Bhoy Not Slim, 2:32, Rangers are of interest to me here for a couple of reasons. Despite how we like to plough our own furrow, we play in Scottish football, and they are our nearest challengers (most seasons).

The outcome of Scottish football remains of interest.

Secondly, no one else will expose them to such scrutiny, and with scrutiny comes pressure. If I can do my bit to add a wee bit pressure, I will be happy.

Thirdly (I know I only said a couple of reasons), there is no football this week, so why not?

    brilliant link-

    especially this bit

"He is adamant that Rangers do not have the customer base to improve their financial standing through merchandising. "Rangers’ so-called global appeal is a myth," he said. "When I was there, we did an exercise which involved asking 50,000 fans on the database to recommend a friend or a relative abroad.

"A big response was expected - some were even talking about getting 100,000 names - because everybody in Scotland seems to know somebody abroad.

"We got back 2,800 names and three-quarters of them didn’t know they had been nominated. It’s no surprise that Celtic are officially the best-supported football club in North America, with more official clubs than anybody else. The difference is the Irish connection.

"Many Irish people may support Manchester United, Liverpool or whoever, but they all - every one of them - have an affection for Celtic. And, of course, Celtic also have a great Scottish following.

"The difference is that, while the Irish all have an allegiance to Parkhead, there are millions of Scots who not only don’t support Rangers, but actively dislike them.

"Despite the claims of international appeal, Rangers are, essentially, a West of Scotland club. They talk of supporters’ buses leaving from all parts of Scotland, but if you look closely, you’ll see there aren’t many from each area and they are not all full. "

Similarly, when he bought back the media rights(?) from ntl for a quid, did he not slap on a mere 14, 999,999 quid, and put THAT into the accounts as well??!!

    Found this on the interweb:

Why do we sing the Hokey-Cokey?

Hmm...... well ....back in 17th century Puritan England anything 'popish' or Roman Catholic was viewed with great suspicion and open to, at best, ridicule. The Hokey-Cokey, with its song and actions, is a mimicry of the Roman Catholic Mass.

In those days the priest faced the altar (not the people) and performed several actions as he consecrated the bread and wine at Holy Communion. The words of the service were in Latin. You put your left arm in ......etc was ridiculing the priest as he lifted his arms heavenward during the rite. You do the Hokey- Cokey and you turn around............ was when the priest turned to face the congregation with the host (consecrated bread) to offer it to them.

Ooooh, the Hokey-Cokey......... hokey-cokey is a corruption of the Latin words of consecration - Hoc est corpus: 'This is my body' (Note: many of the strange words and phrases of our language are corruptions of other languages introduced to our country over the years and few were educated enough to speak or understand Latin). Knees bend, arm stretch, ra-ra-ra....... knees bend is a ridicule of the genuflection (a kind of religious curtsey to the altar) of the priest, arm stretch is when he holds up his hands at the point of consecration in the service, and ra-ra-ra is just a mimicry of the Latin words and prayers they didn't understand.

Today, many people do not know the origin of the song/dance and just do it for fun, especially to teach children co-ordination (and their right from their left). Today, in England, the Roman Catholic Mass is said in English and is so similar to the Holy Communion of the Church of England that, sometimes, if you didn't know what church you were in............

Skeletor and the Evil ones lived and played at Snake Mountain.

The Good Prince Adam of Eternia and He-man were based at Castle Greyskull.

Forces of Light - Castle GreySkull

    TFOD/Darnel - Snake Mountain

Yes there was a moment when Castle Greyskull came under the control of the evil one but in the end the forces of light prevailed.

I like the analysis given - but taking it one step further. If you split the data pre and post CL innauguaration the % of unfancied winners drops to 21% of the total.

This would indicate that another variable has increased in importance over the last number of years - presumably money.

I believe it is now harder for an unfancied team to win the CL than previously (even although there are some weaker teams in the competition - i.e. runners up etc).

    Interestin though.

The fabled, famed and highly respected KERRANG CSC, is a CSC for the bloggers on here who worship at the alter of heavy rock/metal.

It is named, by brattback, after the used-to-be-good-but-is-now-catering-for-14-year-olds, magazine of the same name, (obviously)

If you rejoice to the sounds of guitars turned up so loud that your ears bleed, then you are automatically a member!

If Maloney comes back the way he was last season it will be like a new signing. The wee man was two or three times better than any other player on the park going forward. I look forward to seeing him back in the 1st team.

The other thing it brought back was just how poor the commentating was. 100% bias and obviously so, not quite sure how much better it is now but it must have improved with the replacement of those comical morons and the addition of Crocker.

    Great article Paul,
The future sure looks bright and believe that the way we've invested in the team will pay off hugely as we've pulled ahead at a time when they're lagging behind.

Your article brings up the one point that still had me a bit worried, namely the JJB money. It's great that they didn't invest in the team and all - especially after all the spin about how much they had to spend - but I thought that maybe it wasn't a bad thing for them to use the money to reduce the debt. After all, I thought, they need to get out of their financial hole one way or another. But this explains where the "JJB money went" :-)

With Net Operating Expenses of £18m, and turnover that will be close to £34.4m, Rangers will only have £16.4m available to pay for football operations and interest.

    Oh the Rangers are skint!!!

    MJ88
P.S. Brilliant way to describe Murray in the Scotsman article from earlier:
"The man in power has an allergy to any form of personal criticism.

RyanO'Reilly :- Those may be press names but as a fan I only recognise two of them as being used, the goalie and big DJ and despite what you may think on one as a man and the other as a reporter as players they were both amongst the best in their positions.
Paul :- A slight mistake in your calculations there, if you look at the record of the league it's your own club who are nearest challengers most seasons :-)

I have just read a parable about The Darnel.

Here is my take on it.

It is a poisionous weed, that was planted by gods enemy, beside wheat.

It takes on the appearance of wheat until it is ready to be sowed.

The plan being that when it is recognised as being The Darnel ,the good farmer will rip it out along with the good wheat.

It was god's enemy who had hoped that the good would be ripped out with the bad.

God decided not to have it ripped out until it bore fruit and then e separated the good wheat from The poisioness Darnel.

The Darnel did not actually exist. It was used metaphorically to explain ,that we should all be carefull. That evil will not always be recognisable.

    However ,he good will prevail.

Now,how apt is it that.We can now refer to TFOD as The Darnel.

    I just love it.

    Spread the word.

Forget Led Zep 4, Physical Graffiti is where it's at!

    EdwardUrsus,

No doubting the ability of the 2 culprits in question (not old enough to remember big DJ though), but if 'the goalie' was held in such esteem surely a more imaginative term could have been cooked up! MJ88, many thanks. Just like the old days on Celtic Quick News, brining financial info to the fore.

I knew the Rangers finances were heading this way, but until the transfer window shut, and their accounts were released, there was room for doubt.

The important question is how to cement the advantage, and avoid the mistakes Rangers made when they blew a similar advantage. I’ll come onto that later.

For the record, I don’t think you cement your advantage by making hugely expensive signings, this, in fact, was what Rangers done when the lights went out.

Edward, I know too well the taste of coming second, in fact, I know too well the taste of coming fifth.

I can't see Joe Lewis investing in the Darnel again. Especially not now that they have Spurs and an interest in a few other European teams. The idea for them was to invest in teams that could virtually be guaranteed to be in the CL every year. That's now no longer the case with Rangers.

And contrary to popular belief, Enic did NOT get burned by Rangers (Georgiebhoy67 @ 10.58). They're far too clever for that. Trust me!
