Particularly glad for Kenny coming on to provide another assist; if he sets up 20 goals a season he's worth his place alone for that; I'm sure he'll be finding the goals as well
-
Cant believe it . How long does it take to get your son's picture in the Celtic View , then just like the number 62 bus , 2 come along at the same time . Two weeks in a row now Vicky's real bhoy get his picture printed , first with Artur and then with ex - celt Stan . Is it just because he signed up with the Celtic in the community training course or am I just being cynical .
-
Paul,
Any inside scoop on Riordin?
I watched him warm up yesterday, at a stage when McGeady was quiet, I thought he would have been the perfect replacement, but he wasn't called to action.
I then watched him walk off towards the dressing room, a solitary and dejected figure.
I'd love to see him in the hoops and don't fully understand his ommission. Zurawski and Nakamura are not justifying their automatic selection right now.
Will DS get his chance?
-
Druiddude, from last post. Glad to see you mention Mountain. I thought I was the only person living who knew the true worth of this band !!!! Here is a wee gem, just for you !!!???

Agree with Cultsbhoy re Riordan deserving a chance. For me, Naka could do with a few games coming on as a sub...been very ineffective in recent games.

Cultsbhoy,
I'd heard that there is a feeling that Riordan is needing some "building up" done, before giving him a chance; might be OK for him to come on with a game easily won, but not when there it is overally physical (unofortunately that's a lot of SPL games); I personally think there was a load of kicking going on from the Aberdeen defence, especially Anderson, which the ref turned a blind eye to.
-
Druiddude, for whatever reason !!! my "wee gem" link doesn't appear to be working !!!???
So, I'll try again............

Agree Riopdin loked a b it weedy, but he seemed rebust enough to be a showstopper in a Hibs top.
I had n excellent seat yesterday, curesy of Corporate clients and I watch Russel Anderson throughout, didn't think he gave more than he got- Tommy G certainly gave as good as he got throughout. Actually, I think the ASberdeen team are a bit light on the 'Heavies', as well as having zero goal threat. I expected better from some of the hoops yesterday. Zurawski is starting to annoy me - I think he is essentially lazy - inded the alter ego of Miller who is all heart and no brain/composure.
A big improvement is required for Wednesday as the defense is ther for the taking.
-
Cultsbhoy,
Lucky you on the Hospitality front... I have an outside chance of one of them for Wednesday.. get the news tomorrow, so Crossing my fingers (behind closed doors of course, don't want to offend anyone)
Not sure what's up with Magic, and indeed Naka, at the moment; they are both looking lacklustre at the moment; post-World Cup fatigue ?
-
Thanks Pablo I have just listened to Nantucket sleighride..great stuff..loved how they broke into the Stones "Paint it Black"riff..noticed the two Stones tracks are ballads (Angie abd Waiting on a friend.).I have always loved the less rocky aspect to the Stones..Moonlight Mile,Dead Flowers,Factory girl,Backstreet Girl,Play with Fire,Girl with far away eyes,Ruby Tuesday,Sitting on a fence..many of bands on your list I have not heard so I will educate my taste with further visits...Thanks again and goodnight
Ps did Keith West ever finish his teenage opera...Count the days into years..alas far too many in my case

I would just like to say here and now. The goodwill being expressed towards KM I find particularly encouraging.
I know there are certain individuals who wished we had not signed him. But I am glad we have. Kenny has proven that he is willing to give his all for the "cause". This is all I expect and desire of any individual who pulls on the "hoops".
KM has demonstrated a desire to do well that has/is lacking in more "Celtic minded" individuals that we have seen in recent times.
If he fails to score one single goal this season, I will have no complaints.
His assists, so far, proves he has the desire to prove all his dissenters wrong.
I think his work ethic alone, proves his desire to do well for our club, irregardless of his previous employers.

Spot on! He may not have scored but his contribution has been far beyond many in the hoops so far this season.
I'd pick him ahead of Magic most games.

Pablophanque you said
"If he (KM) fails to score one single goal this season, I will have no complaints."
Please don't say that I bet Shelbourne1916 one hypothetical pint of the black stuff that he would score more than ten. He even said I couldn't count penalties.
I'm getting a cold sweat. I'm from Paisley......Spanners were invented to get 50pencies out of our mits you know!

Good morning from cool cloudy Old Kilpatrick.
How good is that?
If my memory serves me right, I saw Mountain at a Strathclyde Uni Ball sometime around 1971 or 2.
Not the best of venues for their music to be honest, and there was a stripper in the next room who was a bit of a distraction, but still.....
And then, low rising sun golden in your eyes, walking back along Sauchiehall street at 6 the next morning (with girlfriend, not stripper), last beer in hand, enough to get you to the flat at Kelvinbridge.
Memories are made of this. (Do do, do do be do be do. See eclectic, see me?)

You should have shopped around, you can get 9/1 @ bet 365 for Celtic to win on wed.

Chennaiseabird 8.00... wis that walk on the wild side you were do be doing?
For Wednesday....being written off in all quarters( plastic tims Crerand and Mcari being the worst) the perfect build up and incentive if you have an ounce of red blood coursing thru yir veins.
-
Cultsbhoy 12.43
Have to completely disagree with you concerning Kenny Miller having no brain/composure, I think he has already shown he has a very good football brain always searching for the pass and how many goals has he already set up?
Essentially I think his problem is that he's just not greedy enough like other strikers, and Magic is indeed looking very lazy, somebody would need to give him a can of red bull on Wednesday night or a kick up the ass.
-
Just reading Pat Crerand in the papers this morning. He thinks that United will rest some of their key players with one eye on their match with Arsenal next weekend.
Does Sir Awex think the team we played against them in pre-season was our first-team, as opposed to mostly fringe players? Surely the Greatest Manager of our Times is not going to be caught cold because he hasn't done his homework?
The comments of Crerand and Macari are hopefully pinned up on the changing room wall as we speak and should provide all the motivation we need.
Still got a good feeling about this one!

Is it true that One thousand six hundred and ninety television viewers phoned up Northumberland police on Saturday night to complain about Brian McBride's highly offensive and provocative act following his goal for Fulham.
Northumberland police have apparently requested assistance from the colleagues in blue within Strathclyde Police.
-
Is a anyone becoming more and more baffled with Nakamura continuing to get the full 90 minutes away from home?
I thought a badly needed substitution after we had scored the goal and Aberdeen were going to start contributing to a football game in a positive sense, was taking off Naka, who by that stage wasnt contributing anything.
Why do the likes of Maloney and McGeady have to prove they are willing to work extra hard, not only track back but tackle back in order to get into the team?
Surely everyone should be playing under the same rules?

Heads, Hands and Feet on CQN - never thought I'd hear them mentioned on Celtic's premier blog, shows how well educated some of the Bhoys are on here.
Seen them a few times in Glasgow back in the . . . ahem, a while ago, still have one of their albums.
Good three points on Sat. Aberdeen showing what we can expect at most grounds this season (as/normal)
Expect Les Huns to do the same BTW.
Will be watching my beloved Hoops on a French bar's TV Wednesday, I'm sure there will be a few Pomms but expect the locals to be on our side.
Confident that a few Timms crawl out of the woodwork!

record exlusive- man u to rest players for the arsenal game next wk! I really, hope they do.
we NEED to play miller from the start and drop the clinical but often lazy zura, i believe wes brown is their weakest link and miller harassing him intensly for any sustained period would bring us a chance or two IMO.
good substituition on sat you say paul? i think if hed played miller first and zura came on after he had ran em ragged there would have been more goals, im hoping it was with one eye on man u combined with KMs midweek heroics that he was dropped!
-
-
Paul Elliots Beard - I agree, Miller will cause Manu Utd problem and Zurawski does not look as if he is firing all cylinders yet.
An intereseting article in the Sun of all places (the 10p is worth it for the page 3) highlighting the fact that Tottenham were able to get clean through on goal 3 teams with a diaganal ball in between Brown and Evra.
As for Nakamura - I believe there are posters up for him as he is still posted missing. If we had kept Thommo match fit he would be in my team on Wed before Shunsuke.
But with that said it will take something like a free kick for us to score on Wed.
This game will be really interesting - Celtic are not strong enough at the back to invite teams on to them and as for us causing them problems - that all depends on the two wide men.
Mmmmm...
-
-
Paul – agree with the main point but disagree that ‘replacing Maciej Zurawski with yet-to-score Kenny Miller on Saturday was a less obvious move’.
8:18 AM, TerryO'Neill – we should thank them for the motivating words (a reverse of Bob Paisley’s ‘bung ‘em a bit of toffee’ approach). What have they written to deserve the epithet ‘plastic Tim’?
9:06 AM, Danny – I couldn’t understand why Gordon didn’t replace Naka earlier and although he is working hard he is struggling for form. However, once we had scored the goal we just needed to keep possession & run the clock down. Naka would be my first choice in such a scenario – even if he’s not playing particularly well. Pulling off Jan (presumably leaving Kenny to run into the corners) & adding to the midfield was the right change in my view.
-
A fair point we need graft on the wings, aido no probs on recent form but we will be hoping the atmosphere will inspire naka to perform tigerishly
-
nakamura cannot perform tigerishly its not in his make up, he doesn't perform away from home and simply cannot start on wednesday we need garft and physical presence - given that thommo is posted missing pearson would be the only option
naka was missing on saturday and riordan must be wondering what he has to do to get a run out!
-
hi paul excellent website. long time reader but my work firewall only allowed me to read not post so first time posting!!
now im on my travels looking for a bit of celtic-minded help!! in vietnam at the moment - have checked celticbars.com and the only pub listed is in central vietnam - will be in hanoi on wednesday - does anyone know of a bar in hanoi where i can watch the celtic man utd game?? would be much appreciated. slainte
-
Was hoping to cheer Ronaldo, every time he gets the ball on wednesday (he helped put England out and he says he tries harded when fans boo him), but can anyone confirm that he is in fact suspened?
-
Larrybhoy 12-36 I agree Anderson got away with a lot on Saturday.
Man utd game IMO we have to stifle the midfield that Imo means going with 5 in midfield. I would go with
Boruc
Wilson
Caldwell
Mcmanus
Naylor
Lennon
Graveson
Pearson
Mcgeady
Millar sitting in behind JVOH hard shift for Millar.
JVOH.
Option to bring on one or two from Naka Zura Riordan Jari Sno etc.
-
how blatent was that penalty! oh sorry non - penalty!
mcgeady put in an unbelievable shift, graveson was terrific
maciej (refuse to call him magic) was totally impotent and miller should start on wednesday
and i fear for us with our centre backs for caldwell read tebily (bombscare mark two!)
-
Welcome ro7. Good luck getting sorted in Hanoi.
-
Al o...Team Selection.
I think you are spot on with yours. Miller will indeed have to graft a great deal and McGeady will need to prioritise his defensive duties.
It is pivotal that the team stay focused for the whole game and don't go down the glorious failure road, a la Munich, Lyon, Milan etc.
This could be the first time we have people on the bench that can make a difference and Strachan should have no worries about changing things during the course of the game.
With a bit of luck we could fight to something like a 1-0 victory.
Sean.
-
al obundy, nearly with you on that one. I'd make a couple of changes tho - same defence, but with a midfield of
Miller - Jarosik - Lennon - Gravesen - McGeady
Have to say I'm pretty worried about Wednesday, but then I was worried throughout the UEFA run and all Champs League campaigns under MON too! The Champions League nerves set in on the Monday! I just hope we give a good account of ourselves. I can't see us taking a win, even scraping a draw will be tough. However, you never know in football. As I say, if we give a good account of ourselves, even in defeat, it will do our confidence no harm at all and that's what we need to give ourselves a good chance to qualify for the next stage.
As Paul has already highlighted, the key will be the matches against Benfica (with their late league start a bonus) and obviously 6 points v Copenhagen may well be necessary (though no certainty) for progressing.
We need big performances from the mifield to stand a chance. I know our defence has been poor for a couple of seasons, but I think a lot of that stems from a lack of midfield protection. It will be vital to play a strong midfield and WGS will surely aim to give us a numerical advantage in this department. For this to work, JVoH will need to be on top form with holding the ball up, and surely Miller will need to be used as his pace and non-stop running will be vital to provide support for JVoH and therefore an outlet from the pressure we'll undoubtedly be under.
It's a big test for the management and the players, but if we can come through this with a favourable result, then we'll surely be in with a chance.
-
For a big money signing Jarosik seems a bit of a forgotten man.

darnel 2 Celtic 3 (Macari, Dalglish, Johnstone)
From The Celtic Football Companion (the book that contains the photo of the wee sellikghonk by the way)
" Rangers claimed that the game was won and lost midway through the 2nd half by the referee's decision to disallow a goal by Colin Stein for dangerous play. Only a moment or two earlier they had been left with only 10 men when Alfie Conn was ordered off for a foul on Tom Callaghan. Inthe last minute Jimmy Johnstone somehow managed to outjumop the tall Rangers defenders and head the winner. "

Having read all the press and the boards and only managed to hear the game on BBC Scotland. I´m suffering from hooped deficiency syndrome ;-) so excuse this "bit of an epic post"
As far as the Aberdeen game is concerned. It seems an excellent three points against a very determined and defensive Aberdeen line up. Will the two Jimmy´s show the Govan mob the same respect ? and if he doesn´t then that tells its own story´and not a lie down one at that. The bears winnning 4.0 but still getting chastised by their manager may be a good thing in the long run (for us) and Hearts losing 3 points actually means that it was a very good weekend. All things considering. I heard on the radio an excellent and boisterous rendition of The Fields without the add ons and no hulabaloo in the press etc. - so well done the away support at Pittodrie.I wished I was there.
Moving on. CL on Wednesday against Manchester Utd. I think that it´s very important that we play two up front against Man U on Wednesday. If we go into this match without giving their defence something to look and our own team a persistent attacking outlet then I fear we will be overrun. If players such as Naka or Magic were looking jaded then its not a surprise. International fixtures travel then a game against a defensively minded Aberdeen and in a BRAND SPANKING new Celtic team; Naylor, JVOH, Gravesen etc. ... while garnering the 3 points is all that was necessary. A good professional job .. lets keep the improvement and bonding within the team going.
This is exactly when these new guys need our support. If they can bring back a decent performance or maybe even a point for the next CL home game. Then they will understand for the first time what a Celtic support is all about
This is the theatre of dreams .. this is where you will need all your big name players. Selection should not be based upon the performances from Saturday. Dropping Magic just before the CL game is (imho) a nonsense. Magic hit the woodwork twice for Poland and looked pretty good to me in the footage that I saw from last Wednesday. Poland ran him into the ground.
Forget; the meaningless statistics, Rooney & Scholes coming back, Arsenal to follow, Man U pitiful CL campaign last year, only 4000 tic fans etc.
and remember this is a Celtic team with very little CL experience. Boruc, Zurawski, JVOH, Mc Manus, Caldwell, Gravesen, Miller, Riordhan, Sno, Naylor, Wilson, Jarosik, Caldwell, Nakamura etc. They have to go and make a name for themselves in this competition and for Celtic. They are overdue it.
WGS team talk should be all about Artmedia-Bratislava and Manchester Utd´s proud Old Trafford European record and that this is our first competitive game against our commmercial best buddies. So who knows what can happen.
WGS will know a lot more about Man U than SAF will know about Celtic. A surprise can be sprung if we approach this game with the right attitude. A similar attitude if I might be so brave and suggest as when we took on Ajax at the Amsterdam arena. I´m not talking tactics or approach but player attitude.
Man U have been ticking along nicely compared to out sticky start. It´s time to readdress that come Wednesday. A good high-level performance will bind this team together and that´s all we should be asking for.
C´MON THE HOOPS HAIL HAIL !!

Kojo (12:31AM), wouldn't you have been better putting £250 on Celtic NOT to beat ManUre? That way you'd be happy if Celtic get something from the game in spite of losing your dough, and happy if they don't, coz you'd have a few extra quid in the bank...

Cant wait til Wednesday!
Yesterday was a great, great result and the type of game that might win you the league in the end.
Magic needs to be dropped as Miller has earned his place. His pace and work rate could be Uniteds undoing.
Nakamura, he still contributes in his own way - we know he isnt physical, but Ive always thought you can allow one guy like that on a park, as long as theyre making a nuisance of themself, holding the ball, playing passes, being involved.
Still shocked to hear Crerand say "For me Petrov is better than Gravesen and Gravesen is too similar ro Lennon". At this point I flicked the page )on the interweb).
We should play our own game, but I dont think Lennon will even get close to half their players tbh and thats my main worry.
Im very hopeful and a good performance where we match them in most areas is a must!

Great post Aw Naw.
The player attitude, for me, was MON's big strength. He seemed able to instill belief in the Bhoys.
We were amazed in Stuttgart that Celtic went two-nil up in fifteen minutes. Utterly amazed. We, my brothers and pal and me, were there for the craic as Celtic we had been tiny wee bhoys when attending the Real Madrid QF at Celtic Park in March 1980 and thought we'd better make the most of a European game post-Christmas. We were hopeful of being plucky losers.
Oh we of little faith.
The players, unlike us, looked as though they fully expected to take Stuttgart apart. They looked really disappointed to give goals away later in that game, even though we were still comfortable, big Rab or no big Rab.
-
I also agree Id like to see Riordan get a chance soon. He can score out of nothing, and although we've had a lot of possesion, we've not created much. Miller, I have no problems with - I think he's earned it. Beattie is similar to Miller - only difference is Beattie is a little greedier. Magic seems to be off the boil, but maybe thats due to the 'play' Celtic are going with.
-
Celtic_first: here are some of my memories of the Stuttgart game.
I was in Germany that night on business but unfortunately not at the game. This is a transcript of an actual conversation I heard in a hotel bar while watching the game on tv.
Celtic had gone 2 up and Stuttgart had pulled the game back to 2-2. Myself and an American were the only two at the bar watching the game. The TV showed the result as Stuttgart 2 Glasgow 2
The American was joined by his colleague and the conversation went as follows.
Yank 1 - "Watcha watching?"
Yank 2 - A soccer match, it's a great game, Glascow were two to zip up but Stuttgart have pulled it back to a tied game"
Yank 1 - "Is there a Glascow in Germany as well?"
Yank 2 - " I dunno, the only one I have heard of is the one in Ireland"
It took all of my will power to stop myself from shouting at them.
-
Against man utd we need forward players that can hold the ball up well and/or score out of nothing. I dont think Miller has either of those qualities. As mucha s his graft and pace are great assets and in certain games the way to go. Just dont see Kenny Miller being the undoing of utd, Magic hasnt exactly been sparkling of late, however id back him to score more so than i would Miller. However as I said the other day, id be inclined to go 4-5-1 certainly in the first half with the big man upfront himself...
-
You shouldve asked them where America was - if it was in the middle east near Iraq.
-
Im totally against 4-5-1 - anything less than 2 forwards just sounds like damage limitation.
At least 4-4-1-1
-
VClxi,
I live in Germany.Germany were still in the running for the Olympic games that went to London. After that game teh next morning I bought and have kept a copy of the local Stuttgart papers. Enough to give the BBC Scotland staff a collective heart attack.
The head lines were along the lines
of
"Can we have borrow these fans for our bid"
"Stuttgart needs these fans for the crunch tie next weekend ..."
"VFB fans watch look and learn"
"next time take the day off"
I was so proud I kept the papers. Now why oh Why when BQ makes his statements i she not holding up a copy of these to a thronged press rather than make a miserly wee statement through our dodgy web site ?
-
Paul,
Nice to see WGS get the tactics right again (an area of management that he is supposedly deficient) have you noticed his critics are getting less and less vocal, the next match is a rather different challenge where we won’t be pulling out the stops for 3 points! So the team selection is crucial.
My instinct tells me that we need to lose one off our ‘flair’ players for Jarosik (or Pearson) in the midfield however a dead ball expert is a MUST and Aiden has been our most inventive player. I think Miller’s work rate and experience is a must in this game – so I’m sticking to the team I posted last week!
....................Boruc
Wilson.....McManus...Caldwell.....Naylor
...................Lennon
Naka............Gravesen............McGeady

Awe_Naw_,
Excellent post and agree with the sentiments, however you say ’Man U have been ticking along nicely compared to out sticky start. It´s time to readdress that come Wednesday.. While I agree this weekend helps to put things in perspective;
We went to one of the most difficult grounds in the UK and won - Aberdeen do not have the same opposition as Man U however their record speaks for itself.
Our squad has been strengthened over the summer transfer however – yet the players that went (Petrov had an excellent debut for AV and young Wallace scored for Sunderland,) this puts the strength and depth of our squad into perspective.
Although they have made a 100% start to the season Man United didn’t strengthen over the summer (Van Nistilrooy scored a hat trick for Real Madrid), their last two games have hardly been a tour de force. Tottenham could/should’ve got a result – Watford likewise were unlucky.
Tottenham gave Man U too much respect and ended up loosing a game they could have won, I hope we don’t make the same mistake – I may follow Kojo’s lead and put a tenner* on a Celtic victory.
*That’s $250 in real money!
Man United 0-1 Celtic
BTW For those who say Miller can't create a goal for himself, remember he had a HAND in setting himself up in Lithuania.
-
Aw Naw and Vclxi
Through sheer luck, we ended up in a restaurant run by a guy who had played for Kickers in the 80s. He said he had still wanted VFB to win, but he and all his entourage were mightily impressed by Celtic.
Most impressive player? "The big man with orange hair in attack… Ohhh. That's my type of player."
Aw Naw
Wish we'd thought to buy the local papers next morning.
I bought some Spanish and Catalán papers in Barcelona the following year but they weren't very complimentary. We had "played like Numancia" and "football was the loser" was the main consensus.

Imagine Kenny Miller's first goal for the Hoops being the winner at Old Trafford…
-
Or Tommy G's…

Or Deke Riordan's…
-
Kenny Miller must start on Wednesday. Even his detractors agree that his workrate is phenomenal and hard work is exactly what will get us a result.
With Miller just behind JVoH, he would chase and harry any United players in possession from around the halfway line.
He will get forward in support any time we hit JVoH with the ball. He will chase hopeful forward passes all night. He can hold the ball up himself and bring others players into the game. He might even score at last!
Zurawski is a better finisher than Miller but I don't think Wednesday is a match where we can play to his strengths. I'll be happy to be proved wrong though.

Its a big big night for Strachan too.
This could be a defining moment for him, in terms of going some way to convincing the unconvinced that he has what it takes and is good enough to be the manager of Celtic, or it could go a long way convincing those who are unconvinced he is definitely not.
This is his 2nd away game in Europe, but a completely new ball game as a manager as it isnt a 2 legged contest, it is a league format.
This is going to be completely new to him, does he have the tactical guile and the ability to organise and motivate the 11 chosen starters, and the same with choosing who and when to bring on as a substitution.
His 1st venture away in Europe was one of the biggest disasters in 118 years.
Obviously the players have to take a huge proportion of the blame and he had only been in the job for a while etc
but the tactics and substitutions were all wrong.
I hope to god i will be on here and all the WGS can do no wrong i would have his children brigade are chucking humble pie down my throat by the crate load i really do.
If he gets it all wrong again, he will have a lot less excuses than before.
If he gets it right, then this could be beginning of a new and fruitful era, and the little ginger could borrow a line that Frank Sinatra would have said "and i did it, my wayyyyyyyy!!"
P.S. Does anyone notice a difference within the Celtic support now Telfer isnt playing?
I find it more positive, less agitated, more relaxed..
-
Miller has already scored a winning goal against United, in Wolves' only season in the Premiership. Can anyone confirm or deny that he is the only current Celtic player to have scored against them in a competitive match?
ManU's league form should not be seen as a 100% accurate guide to how they will play on Wednesday. The last two English clubs to reach the CL final, Arsenal and Liverpool both had mediocre seasons at home. Arsenal barely qualified for this year's CL and Liverpool needed a rule change to get back in last season.
Traditionally, Arsenal are irresistable in the Premiership and struggle in Europe. Last season Chelsea ran away with it again and went out in round 2, albeit to the eventual winners.
United are not a patch on their great sides of the late 90's just now and are at the least, beatable. We need to look beyond the Premiership hype. They are still a good team and might be too strong for us on the night, but equally, they are as capable of off-nights as anyone else.

Awe_naw,
After a bit of German travel advice - me and the good lady are off to Berlin in November, any advice on places to visit? I had planned on going to a Hertha game, but someone on another Hoops board said that Union Berlin are the team to watch.
Also - what's the weather like that time of year? I wouldnae mind seeing some snow.

Belfast Bhoy,
I think it was suppose to be Thursday for the Benfica announcement which is just crazy as they will have played the night before against Copenhagen!?!

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE UPDATE
This weekend's results for our CL group participants were as follows:
As you will already know MAN UTD recorded a narrow 1-0 victory against Spurs to maintain their 100% start to the season. But at least we can draw some comfort (?!) from the fact that they have looked a little less clinical in the last couple of weeks.
BENFICA lost 0-3 away to Boavista. They say bad luck comes in threes... this was certainly the case for Benfica, as they also had three players sent off! Nuno Gomes, Petit and Manu were the transgressors. This was Benfica's first league game of the season, after their first game was called off due to the ongoing dispute in the Portuguese league.
Meanwhile COPENHAGEN drew 2-2 away to mid-table Esbjerg, with all the significant action taking place in the first half. Copenhagen sit in 4th place after 7 games.

ottokaiser , if you do one thing in berlin make sure you go to the wall museum at checkpoint charlie , brilliant. its at friedrichstrasse station.

SVOC you any relation to SVdP {{:O)
I'd thought they#d said today (11/9) but not even a mention of it

Miller must start, then Zurawski can stick the knife in (if we have not done so already) when he comes on.
Kenny will run the MU back ragged (just let him wear a Scotland jersey under the hoops ;-)
What is the current injury status of: Bobo, Kennedy, Maloney, etc...?
-
I think that we might want to keep it tight on Wednesday. Controversially I'm going to suggest Miller playing as a lone striker for 70 mins. Packed midfield with Jarosic and Gravesen. Averything level at that point; we release JVoH and go for the winner.
My team:
- Boruc -
Wilson - McManus - Caldwell - Naylor
- Lennon -
Naka - Gravesen - Jarosic - McGeady
- Miller -
-
OttoKaiser,
Berlin is not one of my strong points. Haven´t been there in 10 years and as you can Imagine...sweeping changes. In November it will be cold but not freezing.I´ll get my moles onto it and try and dig some things up fou you before November.
Celtic_first,
The Stuttgart papers that morning had the football about 3 pages in. It was our travelling support that stole the limelight.I saw the scene of Stuttgart again when the English had their free for all at the World Cup and was again there last weekend at the Ireland game. Needless to say joy and laughter had been restored.

SVOC
Just checked and the deadline is thursday... I suppose they'll be hoping that Porto win and therefore the group wont be affected when according to the statement it could go to 3 teams... because rightly if copehagen get a result against a higher ranked / fancied team and the game is voided....
-
sorry if this puts the cat amongst the pigeons as it were but IMO i don't think nakamura should get anywhere near starting on wednesday he is totally ineffective away from home and we need physical presence and graft on the flanks
his only plus point away from home is his free kicks and given that its old trafford we'll be lucky to get any
miller should play wide as like mcgeady he'll tackle back and can get down the wing

Awe Naw..
I was in Stuttgart that day with my son,who had taken a 'Sicky' to be there. We were sitting at the corner bar up at the big square, when Jane Lewis and a TV crew appeared, and promptly captured my son emerging from the bar with 2 large beers. Did he have some explaining to do.
Everything is legit for Wednesday though.

Paul67,
A couple of weeks ago, you said "Zurawski Is worth his weight in gold"
I disagreed with you, and you quite cheekily told me to "go and check my Celtic View's" from last year. Which I did and got back to you but didn't recieve a reply.
I don't take pleasure in seeing him playing so badly, I like many others spend a large percentage of my wages following Celtic every game, but It seems most people on this blog have ran out of patience with him.
-
I asked this last week-has El Gordo ever defeated SAF as a manager?
One of my wee worries about Wednesday is that Sir Alec will be determined to put Mr Strachan in his place;in yesterday's interview SAF didn't mention our current manager at all, instead focussing on the achievements of his predecessor.
Of course all this should be good motivational material for ourselves,a chance for WGS to show he can hack it at the highest managerial level.
Right now I would settle for a good, spirited performance, regardless of the score.

Welcome back Big Joe, we have missed you.

OttoKaiser
I was there at the end of July.
Take a bus tour, hop on hop off to get your bearings on the 1st day as it's an absolutely massive city, then get an underground pass for the remaining days, very cheap and efficient.
Lots of street cafe's and plenty to see, all the hotels have tourist maps which have underground route's etc. and everything is easy to follow.

ro7,
googled these bars for you. I imagine that with this being the Chapions League rather than the SPL, at least one (if not all) will be showing it.
JJ's Sports Bar

Bar Barracuda To 4A, Phuc Tan, (04)9323244, hanoi_barracuda@hotmail.com is reportedly the most fashionable hang-out for expats in town. They offer live-music, a beer garden, sports bar and dancing area.

Culi Cafe 40 Lương Ngọc Quyến, (84-04)9262241, culicafe@wideeyedtours.com, http://www.wideeyedtours.com. If you have come to Vietnam to feel as if you haven't left your hometown or just need a break from Bia Hoi, this Kiwi-run Bar might be an option. There's an air-conditioned lounge upstairs and occasionally sports are being screened in the bar downstairs.

TMC,
I can see Jiri getting the nod. It sends out the wrong signals. What´s he done for us so far?
I´d rather have Pearson in their at the moment. He´s got the engine for this type of game. Jarosik has to do it in the SPL. I´d even say the same about Maloney and Bobo if fit. Can´t walk straight into the first team.
-
The pace of the EPL is slower. Ask Petrov ... strolled through his game yesterday, Jarosik is yet to catch the pace of the SPL.
Hooped fans in the Man U section will be loved until Celtic go one up. Same thing happened to me at Anfield .. be careful !!
-
Team wil almost defnitely be:
Boruc
Wilson Caldwell McManus Naylor
Lennon
Nakamura Jarosik Graveson McGeady
Hesselink
I predict 3-0 or 5-0 to Man United.
