Celtic plc AGM 2006 Report

Celtic held their Annual General Meeting today in front of several hundred clearly satisfied shareholders at Celtic Park.

Chief executive, Peter Lawwell, confirmed that the Lennoxtown training facility is on schedule to be opened in August next year and, importantly, is on budget.

He was keen to let shareholders know that “The highly publicised tour in the summer was commercially very successful”. He also pointed out that it did not seem to have adversely affected football preparations, and that the club would look to repeat the exercise in the future.

Gordon Strachan explained his delight at winning the league last season, “I’ve become part of the history of this club, winning the championship means I have done that.

“We won it by 20 points, I keep saying that, but I’ll say it until I am 70. It was fantastic.”

On the stresses of the job he added, “I don’t get paid for managing Celtic, that’s a job you would do for nothing, I get paid for the stress that comes with the job.”

Stilian Petrov was clearly a player the manager wanted to hold on to, “I would have loved him to stay, I really would have, but only in the right frame of mind.”

Chairman Brian Quinn indicated that there would be support for Gordon Strachan if he wanted to strengthen the team in January, with the manager commenting, “We will always try to strengthen. We must keep trying to find top players.

“We have to win the championship.”

Complaints were few and far between. One on the leaky North Stand (an issue I know well), one from a autographed shirt recipient who could not make out the players names, and one from an Investor Level shareholder who got a ticket in the ballot for Old Trafford, but felt he should have had a ticket without a ballot.

Sean Hamil, secretary of the Celtic Supporters Trust, congratulated the board, manager and team for their work, specifically Brian Quinn, for his leadership on the Dividend Reinvestment Scheme, the level of shareholder information communicated by Celtic, and the recent charity match, an idea suggested by the Trust at the last AGM.

Following on from some of the more serious questions raised at the AGM, i would like to see more players put a wee smiley face within their autographs when signing shirts, a la Peter the Pointer grant used to do.

Did we concentrate on less trivial matters, such as specific journalists that we want banned from our stadium??

Or is that only a problem in the sou'side?

Wonder if our days of car-park kareoke will return:

John Hartson used to incorporate a number 10 in his autograph so that you could tell it was his signature.

I think a few of the other players during the MON years used to do the same thing.

Is this not a free world where the Kojo's of this world are free to say anything they like, just the same as anyone else is free to say what THEY like?

(Please note the high incidence of cynicism in that last paragraph)

and onto another point - I need to disagree with you Edmundo on the Investor level person and the ticket for Man Utd.

I know a few of these guys, ordinary guys, travelling on normal supprters buses who in that earliest share offer took the risk to get themselves into those seats and in the original share offer f the main reasons they bought them was this benefit of "preference for away tickets and cup finals. Remembering also that having put up thier £1500 I think it was they get the privilege of buying that dear seat year after year after year.

So if the original offer states that, I find it wrong that the guy goes in a ballot. The contract was made, Celtic should honour it.

I dont subscribe to every supporter is equal as well, I never will, nothing more galling than having followed the team week in week out to be gazumpted at one of the big games with limited tickets by someone who doest go often.

Even worse, and its my own pet hate, the sponsors at away games, around the front doors waiting on their clients with an envelope of tickets.

Interesting to read all the stuff about globalisation and sweatshops etc.

I've fairly recently been in a location where some workers received minimum wage, could not take toilet breaks without permission, and did not have access to free drinkable water.

The facility was operated by a company called RHL, and it's location was a great big stadium with a red brick frontage.

These conditions are not uncommon in the area.

    Call Centres - Glasgow's sweatshops.

Paul, i meant to mention the pre season trips away before but it somehow got deleted towards the end of the day (manager standing behind you and you only realise and hit X instead of _!!)

Whilst commercially it may have been a success, the way it panned out in my opinion could result in its shelf life being alot shorter lived than it could be.

If you sell a product abroad and to a completely new market, the product needs to be better than what is already on offer.

This means we need to go over there with the style and glamour of superstars (inferior merchandise has been mentioned) and more importantly beat the local competition.

    We failed miserably.

When we go back to Japan or Poland, unless there is an improvement on the field, we may miss our opportunity permanently.

Is this something that was mentioned, or something the board could say lessons have been learned from?

Timing has to improve, taking into consideration the condition the players will be in. Dont get too greedy by playing too many (is that the result of what happened with the half empty stadiums in America?)

If we go over there, play a few games, we know we will be in the condition to win, and impress the local audience, they will be dying for us to come back to see some more.

All in all what a difference a couple of players and being a bit adventurous makes!

Its all us fans have ever asked for.

A quiet and civilised AGM, what ever next!? : )

The working environment my company sets up in India is, on the other hand, world class. At least as good as our UK offices. But we do have a nice call centre in Glasgow. But none here.

Just to show that I do read the bit at the top Paul, well, actually, what can you say about that? As much as the gathered shareholders, it would seem.

Can anybody confirm if any of the following issues were raised and what the general outcome of them was. It would be much appreciated

    1) The very low share price and are we worried about that ?

    2) The Celtic poker room and other alternative revenue streams

    3) Public Relations and Club profile with regards statements issued by the board with regards sectarian singing

    4) The Artur Boruc saga and our penchant for going cap in hand with the authorities

    5) The press and how we Celtic FC internally manipulate and divulge information

    6) How many pre sesaon tours is acceptable and is the half hearted, half baked, money raising approach damaging our profile in the long run ?

    7) Comparing the numbers employed in GS backroom staff with MON´s does the Celtic manager feel that he is being overstretched

    8) Is buisness transactions with Mr Mc Gill on hold

    9) Have we managed to sort the APR on the buying of season tickets with instalments

    10) When can we start to see improvements within the immediate Celtic Park area

But the point is, people are critisising kojo for his comment on the last thread. I myself don't think it's worth giving idiots like this the attention he sooooo obviously craves. However, my concern is with Paul and why he hasn't taken him to task. Surely this breaks any house rules and why this comment was allowed to be posted is absolutely unbelieveable. I'm hoping to hear some sort of condemnation for the aforementioned post. If not, it would be absolutely laughable to hear any more comments from Paul, Kojo or whatever the hell he's calling himself today about Rangers fans, songs, sectarianism and the lack of tolerance in Scottish society. Hypocrisy at it's sickening worst.

To continue let's put £20 aside for food and another £20 for bills, £5 for weekly travle costa and £5 for sundry expense. All of which seems abotu right as I remember. That leaves £10 to put aside to save for clothes/non-free medical care(ie dentis, opticians etc). What I'm getting at here is it's a shining example of an employer paying full-tinme staff the most basic of wages with no real benefits in their working environment. The type of people you'd give good thought to boycotting.

What a pity it was Celtic Football Club. As far as I'm aware there's no dramatic improvement.

Kojo is absolutely entitled to his views and should be applauded for airing them. Celtic is open to all. It is up to us if we feel that it is worthwhile to try and influence him to change his opinion in a civilised and tolerant manner.

I do believe that Paul67 made a rod for his own back with his inconsistencies and unbalanced censorship policy on CQN.

But that´s just my opinion and that is his right.

What does Paul67 do when confronted with a blogger that posts his drivel; which some may find extremely offensive (i.e the entire Celtic support as far as I am concerned), but his valid opinion, against a post that generally would be considered art and literature but has a bad word in it that a 4 year old raised solely by nuns only may find offensive?

I tell you what I am glad it´s not my problem but lets stop the witch hunt leave Kojo to his own devices. Who knows more of him on here and we might get a few searching questions at the AGM next year? and leave Paul67 with his own and absurdly inconsistent censorship policy (imho) to decide who & what gets aired and who doesn´t. It is his blog. It´s up to him to develop it how he sees fit. Why am I thinking of the Kelly´s and the Whites ?

    What a poor response Kojo,

You therefore transfer the blame of offence to those being offended???

The language used was plain and in context.........

Think of the language and terms you would find in the legal sense to prove or disprove guilt:

What would the reasonable man do?
How would the reasonable man think?
What would the reasonable man say?

Most of the reasonable people who enhance our daily reading with their very presence have found fault and taken offence to your post.

    An apology still awaits.........

Thanks Ardoch, great to meet you too.

Martinobhoy, I am not convinced the leaky North Stand issue was previously high enough up the radar.

Edmoondo, as I know to my cost, don’t take on Peter Lawwell unless you really need to.

The view from 440, Gordon was clear that winning the league was no more than acceptable.

St Stiv’s FP, PL was quite clear that all shareholder commitments had been kept, including preferential ticket allocations, as distinct from guaranteed tickets for all games, a commitment to which I do not believe was made.

McManus69, no direct questions on joining other leagues. I will take this one up myself.

Amortised Jock, maybe they could get Shaun to fix the roof with his extra pay from his new contract.

I like the way you think.

CarfinGerry, the usual answer was given on the Maloney contract, ‘all hoping he stays, try to keep him, but not break the pay structure’.

BAz67, Gordon has a wee glint in his eye when he said “champions”.

StevieS, not read any of the previous correspondence. If Kojo has stepped out of line he will be dealt with in the usual manner.

Celtic Gucks, I echo your comment on Sean Hamil. I have always had a meeting of minds when I speak to him.

Danny, I think lessons were learned during the summer trip (as you would expect).

Chennaiseabird, several congratulations and a round of applause for the manager.

Lovejoy, no mention of CP developments.

Geebeethai, “Hypocrisy at it’s sickening worst”

I happen to be particularly busy this week, and, apart from the article on the AGM, have not posted a comment for over 18 hours, and have read practically nothing in this time.

It is very easy to criticise me, but it would be courteous to look for evidence that I had a least been on the blog since whatever it was that offended you.

I am pleased to read your subsequent apology, even if it was accompanied by the speculation that I “conveniently missed” something.

The “angry and disappointed people on this blog waiting to see if this is the case” will need to wait some time more, as I remain particularly busy right now, and wonder why I bother.

I work for one of those wee multi-nationals that sends me to college with guys from across europe. In my class I have a good Romanian friend, we are having a wee quiz one day and he asks "who is the only team to win the European Cup with all players of the same nationality ....

Benfica says our Portugese guy, no way we say they had players really from Mozambique,

Real Madrid says our Spanish guy, no way we say, they had imports from Argentina , Italy, who got Spanish passports.

Its got to be Barca then , first time, when they not only had all Spanish but all Catalonians, the Real fan says no he is sure they had someone from abroad .......

Nope say Mihai, your all wrong its Steau Bucharest .......

This causes a heated debate with Rado from Sofia, no way they had someone from Bulgaria, sure didnt so and so play with them, Mihai disputes that the guy got on the park, he was there but didnt play, so he maintains its Steau.

    Your all wrong says me,

First was the mighty Glasgow Celtic in 67, and not only were they all Scottish, I can tell you were they all lived.

In the same class is a dutchman, who lives in Barcelona. We often discussed Henrik, with this guy convinced that he was a good player, but not that good, fast forward to his last game with Barcelona and the same guy is phoning me to tell me that yes Herik was that good and really was a god.

Back to Rado, he knows our own Stan very well and often visited when in Glasgow and had been to a few Celtic games.

And lastly, one of our lecturers is originally from Stirling, now lives in Bolton, and another red hot tim. You have never seen anything as perplexing to a class of 100 foreign nationals (meant to be discussing accounting) as we break of mid presentation and start to debate the Celts. We cant help ourselves.

Having said that, to a man and woman in that class they are all Bhoys and Ghirls now.

Borat isn't actually going out to offend but to expose the people he interviews. He is being ironic and if anything, the joke is on the bigotts he speaks to. When he gets everyone to sing "Throw the Jew down the well", it is showing up the Red-Necks in that particular bar, as opposed to being offensive ti the Jews himself. (He is actually Jewish)

I must agree with the majority of the other guys on here Paul, it does seem that certain posters are allowed to post whatever they feel like regardless of content, yet others are pulled up for the least infringement.

Not to sure why that is, particularly when the complaints are coming at you from a multitude of regular good guy posters.

On a football blog what chance does that give someone?

"I do believe that the BNP should be allowed their freedom of speech."

Agreed. A lot that better that they now have to be beaten at the ballot box rather than on the streets as happened in the 80's and early 90's.

Loved this from Peter Lawwell "We know what we are doing at the club, over the last three years at the club in my time we have signed or re-signed 41 players and only lost one - Liam Miller." This statement place the onus frimly on Shauns agent and also serves as a warning of what can happen when you leave Celtic too young.

Can't help but picture everyone at the AGM with big cheesy grins, except for the poor guy who was balloted for Old Trafford. He sounds like a few guys I've spotted in 443 at the Champions League games. They come in suited and booted with a look of disgust that they are sitting in with the plebs, looks like their company were a few corporate tickets short. If you see them, always offer the poor wee souls a bit of your pie and a swally of bovril - watch the reaction.

cracoviacelt - Peter Lawwell gives off an air of authority I have not seen come out of CP in 25 years. So glad we have him.

God help Shaun M's agent if things start going against Celtic.

But as with Stan P if its not in Celtics favour they will not hesitate to let him go. Timing is good as Aiden is playing his best yet and would probably hold down the place ahead of SM.

Just watched the question and answer session and the press conference. I thought Peter Lawwell equivocated too much about the person who should have got a ticket directly for Old Trafford. That's part of his privileges. Fair play to him. For the rest, I was very happy with the lot, especially Peter Lawwell's answer in the press conference about the away supports' singing,"they know what they should not be singing." They, like everyone else, DO know. Why do they persist, with the objectionable stuff?
All in all, all things Celtica are bright and beautiful...and the UEFA delegate at the Benfica match was very impressed. Has that been noted by those who follow that other team in the sou' side?

What about Jackie McNamara. Did he not slip through the net?

Shaun will be very concerned about playing at Kilmarnock. He received one of his bad injuries there.

It would be a bad time for him to be injured and would affect his bargaining position. Ironically it could help PL to close the deal and allow him to focus on AMcG.

Your defence appears to be that you intended no racial slur so it's those that took that meaning have the problem. So, why mention the cannibalism and the jungle. Those are, at least, loaded words if not encoded ones. I'm quite prepared to take you at your word that you are aware of no racist outlook on your part but I would expect a bit more self awareness from you as to how that choice of words looks.

right, as regards the British Cities to have two teams to reach the European Cup Semis, Up till last year there were only two: Glasgow and Dundee.

The Darnel have reached a European Cup semi; in fact they hold the record for the biggest ever humping in that particular round, when they went down 12-4 (6-1 away and 6-3 at home) on aggregate to Eintracht Frankfurt in 59/60.
    We've reached the semi on 4 occasions; 66/67, 69/70, 71/72 and 73/74.

Dundee and Dundee Utd were both European Cup Semifinalists in their one and only participations in the European Cup each; Dundee in 62/63, and Dundee Utd in 83/84.

As of last year, London is also in this list, with Chel$ki being the first London club to reach the Semis when they lost to Liverpool two years ago, and obviously Arsenal last season.

With regards the other cities mentioned, Neither Everton, Manchester City or Heart of Madlithuanian have reached the European Cup Semi, although Liverpool, Manure and Hibs (55/56) all have.

Incidentally, this year was the first time Hearts actually won a tie in the European Cup, after two previous attempts going out at the first hurdle (58/59 and 60/61), even if they only got from Qualifying Round 2 to QR3.

    Talking of the Jungle book

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
    If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

So, if we don't want Killie to pick up any injuries, this may not be the match in which to bring Bobo back. How do we feel about resting one or both of the full backs as they have been struggling with injuries. I can't see Gordon approving places for both O'Dea and Caddis cos he likes continuity.

It's just the thought of paul telfer's steak filled boot being served up to an unsuspecting punter in a Burger van later. He should be protecting that injury to give him a fighting chance in round 2 vs Simao.

You tried with draw a line, but when did that ever work here.

I emailed someone earlier today with a comment about how depressed, not too strong a word, I was with the pontificating that's been going on here for the last couple of days.

Some libertarian wants to prevent me from playing poker the Celtic way. Thank you for protecting me.

Globalisation is anathema, exploitative, corrupt. Thank you for putting me right about how I earn a living. Not to mention trampling all over my illusion that actually I might be doing some good.

Of course, if I cannot make up my own mind about whether or not I play poker, how can I be trusted with deciding whether or not my livelihood is acceptable to the Politburo (is that how you spell it?)

There is not one word racist about what Kojo posted. It may be tasteless, it's certainly rightist, but hey, I can do tasteless leftist jokes. I bet you could too. And sexist. And sectarian.

It would be nice if there had never been cannibals. For the people who were eaten at least. It would be nice if people had never had to live in squalid conditions in tropical jungles and concrete jungles, rainswept moorlands and sunbleached deserts. But they did. And commerce was a major factor in making their habitat more hospitable. Is that racist? Has Kojo said any more than that?

When I come home from India and tell my sister about some of the poverty I see here, she says I should see the way some people have to live in the chemes of Scotland West. And I believe her.

I believe in a kinder world than I suspect Kojo does. But I also agree that we need business, entrepreneurship, to fund that kinder world. But more fundamentally, I believe in tolerance. And as I said before, tolerance is worthless unless there is something to be tolerated. So what?

Come on guys, get off your hobby horses, open your eyes and your minds, expand and deepen the beliefs you hold. What is there to lose by understanding and tolerating another point of view.

I wish I could get a good New Zealand CB out here, I really do. But it's all black market, it sits in car boots at 45 degrees for days before you get it, it's 11 pounds for a bottle of Lindemanns CS / Shiraz, it's hell out here. 25 in a restaurant.

On the other hand, the seafood is heavenly and the Kingfisher is cheap. So it's not all bad.

You said last week when you were (mystically) pontificating about my postings (not for the first time)

Another major factor in the site's success is the restraint and judgement people excercise themselves in their posts. Long may it continue.

Thank you sir. Just for you, a sexist joke. Well, not just for you. Minx, if you're reading, for you too.

Eleven people were hanging on a rope under a helicopter--ten men and
one woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all, so they
decided that one had to leave, because otherwise they were all going
to fall. They weren't able to name that person, until the woman gave a
very touching speech. She said that she would voluntarily let go of
the rope, because, as a woman, she was used to giving up everything for
her husband and kids, or for men in general, and was used to always
making sacrifices with little in return. As soon as she finished her
    speech,
all the men started clapping their hands....

Peter Lawell on Radio Scotland just now. He has just said that certain Irish songs are misunderstood and wrongly thought of as sectarian, a level of ignorance is involved.

Thank you Peter Lawell. The Celtic board should have said this a long time ago, when Bhoys Against Bigottry was launched.

This is a great blog. It really is.

However it does tend to become a little bit too political, sometimes.

We all have different opinions and will never agree. However, when the discussions degenerate into namecalling exercises of easy targets like Kojo and Paul, it is not that great a blog.

Kojo has a different set of opinions. No shock there. Big deal. I think there are people queing up to have a pop simply because he is an easy target.

As Paul said, draw a line. Move on.

Let's get back to the FITBA.

We have a great Manager, agreat team, a great board, a leaky roof and we could qualify for the last 16 of the CHAMPIONS league next week! Nothing to talk about......

For the record, the situation with regard to "priority" in the allocation of tickets is clearly stated in the 1995 Share Offer Prospectus. Investor Level Shareholders are to receive certain benefits among which is the following: "....whilst a season ticket holder, priority over standard season ticket holders in the allocation of tickets for Celtic's away games and matches at neutral venues".

Not much room for misinterpretation there - you would think!

Perhaps the Investor Level Shareholder who asked the question at the AGM was making a fair point: why was he in a ballot, assuming that there were enough tickets for all priority groups and a bit more besides? PL's answer as reported by you was fairly ambiguous.

Great site, Paul, and YOUR baby -that's why you bother!

Chennaiseabird and my goodself attended St.Patrick's Dumbarton High School in the same year, we only discovered that in CQN exchanges a couple of months ago. When he was home recently we met and enjoyed each other's company and now keep in touch offline regularly.

The Lanarkshire "Mafia" seem to be a really good bunch who are long time good friends. I could go on but won't.

Several of us know who we are, why shouldn't we, and it works fine.

    Howeverrrrrrrrr,
