Denia
gotta be a 10, his life would be hell if he left their first team to sit on our bench
not to put the guy down, he's a good player and could maybe fit in well if naka was having an off day, and despite a sensational performance on tuesday which will hopefully kick him on, naka has been anonymous at times.
on maloney it depends on what you consider excessive. relatively speaking, you would think jarosik is on at least 20k, graveson and balde probably 30k. hessilink prob 25-30k. if maloney isnt getting offered minimum 20k he's right to walk. i think if he's asking for 25k its fairly reasonable. i suggest 30k is maybe excessive, but i would consider giving him, if only to sell him on(not to say he isnt worth it)
anything more than that would be ridiculous and he doesnt strike me as the type to be asking too much

Paul - we´re jumping about a bit here, I wonder if yo´re agenda will cause any type of a stir with the old meeja, or has a Burke for paradise story already appeared somewhere?
I wonder who PLG will be looking at down Old Trafford way this January, there must be some more tackle-free stars looking for a few months of easy training.

From end of last blog-
...Charlie Tully, now theres a name!My dear departed dad used to eulagise about him when he played for the great Belfast Celtic. Also when in an international game he scored direct from a corner and the ref said "no goal, take it again". He did and put it in the onion bag again!pure class. Also fond memories of Johnny Doyle starring against the great Real Madrid 1980 at Celtic Park. To both greats R.I.P. Hail hail!

Managed to get up to Glasgow for the Benfica game and introduced my 15 year old son to his first ever European night. What a baptism! Great performance from the team and fans alike although why do they let those photographers obscure the view from the front of the Jock Stein stand? One clown in particular was sticking up a good foot or so more than the rest and we had the get the stewards to (eventually) get him to sit on a lower seat. Even then the byline and a good 5 or 6 feet of the pitch couldn't be seen.
Anyway, concerning wee Maloney; maybe someone like John Kennedy needs to have a word in his ear and remind him of how the club have treated him and others like him during their long spells of injury. I don't remember SM being angry about his deal back then and while I understand that he'll want the best deal possible for a new contract he needs to remember that the club had faith in him and a bit of reciprocal behaviour wouldn't be amiss. That said, other than the alleged quote from his cousin earlier in the last post, SM is wisely keeping his own counsel and hopefully that points to him signing on the dotted line soon.
Last point - can anyone tell me whether our scouting network extends south of the border? I never hear of young English lads getting trials for the youth teams and wonder why.
-
Denia Bhoy, no comment on that one.
Hugh, first class. Made me laugh.
Ragnar, correct, I’ll let the auld hauns enjoy telling you the detail.

On the Shaun Maloney contract matter, this is the only "issue" that the old media hacks have on Celtic at the moment. Everything else is more than rosy and we all know good news about Celtic does not "sell". So the big wind up on Shaun will only get bigger. Winding up the Celtic fans is part of this effort.
PL knows fine well that if Shaun speaks to other clubs in January there's a huge risk of silly money being dangled and he could very well be offski.
Shaun's agent is playing the game exactly as he should and so are Celtic.
My prediction: It will all be done and dusted before the windae opens. Until its done, dont' take the bait.

Chaired by Tom 64 of course, can you all make it that night guys?

To be perfectly honest, and bearing in mind that Maloney is one of my fav Celtic players at the moment, I wouldn't let him or his agent hold our club to ransom.
Not forgetting that GS & PL seem to have a knack for offering the right contracts to players, if he doesn't like what is on offer, let him go and swiftly move on to the next one!
Players and their agents have had it all their own way for too long, and it's time for club management to redress the balance. If they ALL took the same stance, there would be less petulance about and more loyalty.
-
CanajunBhoy,
Spot on. If Sean Maloney wants to to swap a place on the bench at CP for a place in the stands at Stamford bridge then that is his perogative.
Sean Maloney should speak to; Mark Burchill, Liam Miller, Simon Donnelly etc.
Can anyone enlighten me to the name of SM agent. If it´s Mc Gill then I think we will be saying goodbye to Shaun no matter what

dixie deans sideboards - re Charlie Tully
My Grandad used to tell me the same story about him scoring direct from the corner only for the ref to tell him to take it again, only for Tully to score yet again !
He always told me it was a game for Celtic at Brockville in the Scottish Cup. He also used to say he scored direct from a corner for Northern Ireland against Engerland in a game he ran (might have scored 2 not sure) at Wembley.
Maybe Tully57 or another one of the auld hauns could confirm? Anyway, wherever he done it the man is a GREAT.
Hail Hail
-
Ragnar,
i may be wrong but I think Tully may have scored in a similar manner for NI vs England
-
sorry dixie re-reading the posts I see you already had my point covered
-
Seweedbhoy -

We could even present an award on the night for the winner of the first poster!
-
Miketw10,
I haven´t spent a penny of it yet as I have yet to collect. I´m waiting for the DT´s to subside
:-) :-)
Charlie Tully scored at Brockville from a corner. The interesting part was that the referee disallowed his first attempt claiming that he hadn´t taken it from the corner. Brockville had fans spilling onto the pich because it was that full and Charlie had to shoo fans away from him so that he had the place to take the kick - allowing him at least a wee run at it. I think this is why Mc Geady is roundly booed at Falkirk.
-
Anyone tap us £450?
-
It reminded me of my brother's bet back in '98.
He had 2 singles and a double on Celtic to beat Rangers 2-0 in the New Year game and Craig Burley to score first!
To be fair to him, after Lambert scored his wonder goal, he said he didn't mind if Celtic scored again, as he had already made a profit.
-
Greenlion2 - I've had far more joy using Ad-aware (which is available free) than McAfee (which I paid for) for Spyware protection.
-
Awe Naw,
I know you're not naive enough to believe that's why McGeady gets booed at Falkirk.
Very magnaimous of you to even offer a logical explanation, but anyone with a hole in their bottom knows why he gets booed.
-
Left Winger
It's that haircut eh?
-
There's something I need to get off my chest. At times like this thank heavens for CQN and for Paul's fine work.
I THINK JOSE MOURINHO IS A COMPLETE GIT. (Language violation?) Tully reminded us of John Doyle which in turn got me thinking of John Thomson - you can see where I'm going with this, can't you?
Thank God Petr Cech was not more seriously injured in the tackle with Reading's Stephen Hunt but for Mourinho to slate the Reading player is in my book nothing short of slanderous and seriously prejudicial.
Now I'm no lawyer here but what right has this excuse of a football manager to spout off in a way which no doubt will be detrimental (regardless of the FA judgement) to his career. Sam English was blameless but history shows he was never the same player again. The boy Hunt has to deal with his own feelings without that GIT mouthing off. Can you imagine the stick he's going to have to take, made worse by that GIT.
I don't think it was a deliberate assault but that's not for me to judge, nor was it for Mourinho. I have an irrational dislike of the GIT and I wish he would go away. He and Chelsea deserve each other.
I THINK JOSE MOURINHO IS A COMPLETE GIT.
Have I made my point?
Get well soon Peter Cech, perhaps the best keeper in the world.
John Thomson RIP, John Doyle RIP

But thanks for the thought.

Is it because he is so good??

Was Mel Stein not Gazza's agent as well?
He managed to get a decent move for him to the premiership from the SPL (in it's previous incarnation) despite court cases, old age, use of only one knee, a drink problem, weight problem, mental problems.
I'm sure if Maloney really wants to go the EPL, he'll get his chance.
If he looks at things objectively, and Celtic make a reasonable offer, i would envisage seeing him in the hoops for the next 2 - 3 years.

McGraininSpain
Interesting opinion on Jose Mourinho which I understand and respect, however don't agree with it. I think he is a fabulous football coach, very colourful guy, interesting, articulate, looks after his players well, defends them to the hilt in public, a really strong family man never has a bad word to say about Celtic or the supporters, quite the opposite in fact.
In Seville after the final whistle as far as I can recall, he sent the entire Porto team over to applaud the Celtic fans and he followed suit, we of course stopped singing YNWA and began booing him and his players. However that’s all water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned. Diverse opinions, good stuff.
-
Re SM's agent.
I think he changed from Mel Stein this year, but don't know who.
I'm certain its not that clown McGill though.

Tom64! Thought that might draw you out of retirement, always the voice of reason when posting, which is why of course you were nominated as chairman! Dont you think Kenny Miller's goal (2cnd) salute the other night there was very reminiscent of the wee buzzbomb when he used to score? Certainly reminds me of one of the Lions.

Otto,
I remember saying to a friend, "Can I tap you for £500?"

José Mourinho is the only person who's name has provoked my Priest to swear at church.
About 2 years after Seville, Man City beat Chelsea, and just before 6 o'clock evening Mass, Mgr Gilmartin said to me: "Fantastic, about time someone shut that arrogant wee b@st@*d up!"
Then he toddled off to preach about tolerance and forgiveness.
Wonderful!!
-
Guys,
should we really be adding fuel to this debate?
Some numpty made up a story that Chelsea want Maloney - it is untrue. Chelsea may have had a representative at the game but there could be one thousand other reasons for that.
I am surprised people have taken the bate.
Shaun wants to sign for Celtic. Celtic want to sign Sean. Sean will sign for Celtic.
-
Apologies,
Seems Maloney's agent could be someone called Peter Jardine.
-
Baz67,
You are correct, that game was against Falkirk at the old Brockville Stadium.
I think it was played on a Wednesday afternoon, there being no floodlights in those days.
It was in the early fifties and I was at the game with my dad and a couple of uncles.
I was about 10 years old at the time.
I posted this story two weeks ago when someone mentioned Charles Patrick T.
Cheers,
Martin.

Nuclearfalloutbhoy...
Well said! Got to agree with you regarding Mourinho. With the possible exception of Martin O'Neill at Villa, he is easily the best man-manager in the EPL.
The team spirit he's got going at Chelsea is sometimes quite awsome. The players love him, whereas the Man Utd players FEAR Ferguson. I know which one I'd respond to better!
OK, he shoots his mouth off in public a lot, but is that not the case of bringing some of these problems out into the open?
I know there are some who will say, "I can't forgive him for Seville", but at the end of the day, history will record that he was the winning manager that night, and only Celtic fans will remember who the runners-up were!
-
nuclearfalloutbhoy - hear what you're saying but what of his conduct after Saturday's incident?
Would Gordon Strachan or MON or would have Jock Stein opined in this manner - I think not.
He is disagreeable. You might call that colourful and interesting and I don't question is nous as a coach.
I'm saying he's a GIT.

-
To pick up on a couple of poins Miketw10 made regarding Mourinho
The team spirit he's got going at Chelsea is sometimes quite awsome
and
he shoots his mouth off in public a lot
Now half of me likes the guy, half of me really dislikes the guy, but all of me respects him.
Think of all the superstars Chelsea have got, the variance in wages, the amount of players that don't really get a game.....
Mourinho, by talking too much, by making comments he probably shouln't, and by causing upset himself......he takes any attention away from his squad of players and allows it to be concentrated on himself.
This in turn allows the players to concentrate on their game without interuption.
There has been very little scandal regardiing the squad, and the only player to cause disharmony amongst the squad and staff was Gallas, who was sold at a profit, and allowed Chelsea to purchase a long-term target.
Love him or loathe him, Mourinho is a very good, and very effective manager.
-
Martin42 - Thats right about the floodlights I remember my Grandad saying that also.
McGrain - away and have some vino......

McGraininSpain,
Taking into account what happened to both his goalkeepers on Saturday I would say the guy was well upset and probably not thinking clearly. I would have been bealing.
AweNawNoetc
I didn't forget anything mate, in fact I completely disagree with you on that. BTW, Did you really have £100 on Celtic to win 3-0? What was the payout? Good luck to you if you did.
MikeTW10 - appreciate the support - got a spare tin hat?

Baz67 - that's exactly what I intend to do.
Nobody has referred to the GIT's conduct after Saturday's incident. Acceptable? Colourful?
It was unneccessary and unpleasant.

Headline figures for Shaun Maloney
League appearances = 46 starts (52 subs)
League goals = 26 goals
Here are the stats for Shaun’s career at Celtic so far:
2000/01 – 4 games, 0 goals. 2 wins, 2 losses
2001/02 – 20 games, 10 goals, 18 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw
2002/03 – 30 games, 5 goals, 22 wins, 5 losses, 3 draws
2003/04 – 23 games, 6 goals, 22 wins, 1 draw
2004/05 – 3 games, 0 goals, 1 win, 2 losses
2005/06 – 43 games, 16 goals, 32 wins, 4 losses, 7 draws
2006/07 – 6 games, 0 goals, 5 wins, 1 loss
Now it is obvious that Shaun has played more games from the bench than he has started in his career but I was surprised at just how many games he has been involved in over the last 6 seasons.
His stats from last season are very impressive, especially considering he played mostly from the left of midfield. At 23, he has plenty of experience behind him and I would expect him to replace James McFadden in Walter’s affections this season.
Barring the major injury in 2004/05, the stats show that Shaun is a reliable player who has been used by both managers. If celtic were willing to offer Liam Miller circa 15k per week after such a limited contribution then I think Shaun should be looking for more. He is a player who makes things happen and has a vision/calmness on the ball that not many others possess.
He is the best young player in Scotland right now and has a more complete game than many earning big bucks at out club. I think Strachan recognises his worth and will push a deal through. Leaving his being a celtic fan aside, he is a consistent performer and a vital cog in the current team. His interplay with Naka for JVoH goal at Dundee United was a great cameo of their chemistry.
I look forward to watching Shaun play for the hoops over the next few seasons.

Stilian PetroV in todays Evening news urging Maloney to stay put at Celtic.
Additional headline from Vandal Adonis "A journey into history or bon voyage to hope"
.... can you feel the pain ?
-
Apparently Petrov was a commentator for the European game on Radio (either clyde or BBC Scotland).
Did anyone hear it? What was he saying about Celtic and WGS/MON?
-
Petrov was on BBC Scotland. He was very complimentary in general about Celtic, as was BBJ when he did the Copenhagen game.
I didn't hear it all but Petrov neatly sidestepped any questions that were designed to create a headline.
-
Nuclearfalloutbhoy,
Thanks but I did try and tell you all beforehand !!
I got thirties :-)
As for Mourinhio´s failings there not up for debate. He´s admitted it himself. Never have I seen anybody back tracking as much as he did with regards the referee in Barcelona whom he accused of going into the Barcelona changing rooms when it was indeed untrue.
To then accuse Hunt of trying to kill Petr Cech after the threating behaviour and abuse that Ander Firsk and his children had to endure to the point that the man retired through fear of his life shows what a scumbag the man is.
To then meekly come out like Sue Pollard on Little Britain and say say "well I have to beleive what my back room team tells me" shows a very weak and puerile man.
You are of course entitled to your opinion. This is not about opinions however. Mourinhio has pleaded guilty to this and took his minimal punishment. As far as I am concerned it´s not even up for debate. Mourinhio is a cheat and a liar.
-
Stan was on Radio Scotland's commentary team.
I only heard him on the way home from the game.
Everything he said was most complimentary.
Like BBJ, who was on Radio Scotland commentary team for the Copenhagen game, you could tell he still has a strong bond with the Club.
-
Gavil Guy,
NOT EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS;
When I was working for a New York firm we used to give them stick over their sports* - the key one The World series......... (round about the time the Mets played the Yankees!)
Of course unlike the World Cup the world series is rather limited in a Geographic sense!
ANYWAYS
I found out from a well informed Englishmen how the title came about - None of the Americans knew this!
At the start of the compition circa 1900 (I think) the first sponsor was a Newspaper called (something like)
The World News
It was called the World series after the publication!
Although the newspaper went to the wall fairly quickly afterwards - the event contiued with the same moniker!
*You know how they love that:-)

truetim
i dont think its unreasonable to debate the fact that last years player of the year/young player of the year is out of contract in the summer
taking players for granted in the way that we did miller and mcnamara(is the common link the fact they are celtic fans?) is not a clever way to go about business as if any clubs want him they will no doubt have contacted his agent to relate to the player how much they are willing to pay.
although PL was hailed for the petrov deal(rightly so) it was still naive to let him run down to 18months. why? because if stan had 'suddenly felt he couldnt motivate himself anymore in the spl' 3 months earlier, he wouldnt have signed and would have been sold in the summer for 2-3million. result? maybe no JVoH
arsenal took a similar risk with henry last year but it too paid off as he decided to stay. but had he not, they would have got significantly less than his true market value
liverpool got stung when owen left for 8mil with a year left(resold a year later for 16mil) and will now sell star or 'marque' players with 2 years left as indicated by their acceptance of a 30mil offer from chelsea last year despite not wanting to sell.
now you cant do it will all your players, particuarly your older ones or you might end up with an alan thompson situation, and in this instance with 2 years left on maloneys contract no-one could have known the impact he would make, but surely by early in this year it was apparent that he developing into a top player and top players need to be nailed on contracts in an era where tapping up is so common-place
would it really be that suprising if maloney thought teaming up with MON on a significantly higher salary was a better option than re-signing at celtic? i still think/hope he will sign as i think we will be his prefered option and his salary wont be bank-busting but it is an avoidable and unnecessary situation
all imo of course ;-)

I dont need to impress anybody especially a convicted lying cheat like Mouriniho.
How can it be insulting to state what the man pleaded guilty too himself ? A convicted cheat and liar and he accepted his punishment - dare I say it ; gracefully.
I´d have no problem telling him to his face that he´s a cheat and a liar. I´d enjoy the experience given the chance. I´d also tell him that he coaches his players to cheat and lie as well.
I´d like to see him face Anders Fisrk face to face and if nobody knows that story then I suggest searching it out before handing out any plaudits to such an obvious scumbag

Shelbourne,
If we get a result in Lisbon, will you then finally admit to being happy with the team?
Do you actually get any enjoyment out of watching Celtic? I would reckon if you go back and look over your posts they will be almost 90% negative. Even after a superb performance and result and a fine run of form this season you are still mainly negative. Surely even you must have been happy after the Benfica game.

Having watched the Cech incedent several times, I believe the Reading player tripped on Cech, causing his heavy fall. There was certainly no intent on injury.
Ander Firsk was subjected to threats after Mourino incorrectly accused him of having a private meeting with Frank Rjykard (sp) during the Barca – Chelsea game, the implication being that an inappropriate contact had happened.
Firsk suffered very real intimidation as a result and retired forthwith.
Mourino later said that his staff had told him this, though clearly it did not happen and no individual claimed to have seen it.
The Reading ambulance story; where Mourino said there was a 30 minute wait for an ambulance was also incorrect. The wait was 7 minutes, Mourino’s version was also told to him by a member of his staff.
These are serious accusations with potentially serious consequences for those on the receiving end of Mourino’s wrath. Lives can be changed if a football crowd think you have tried to seriously injur a player, or cheat their team.

Bryce Curdy thanks for the tip but I think i already downloaded that 1 along with the 1 that Kojo gave me last night. Also downloaded the google pack which gave me some things as well (you can see how technical i am). But I still have 2 problems.
1. I cant remove Nortons from the computer for some reason and i have corrupt files on it at startup
and this is stopping me getting it from the google pack.
2. I am still getting pop ups and directed away from pages i am on.
Theleftwinger interesting comment about Shauns cousin at the sheep game at Ibrox. Lets just say I know a man who knows a man etc and I phoned him and he does not believe Shaun has any cousins who go to Aberdeen or even Celtic games on a regular basis.
As I posted on here months ago and Paul told me not to worry about it was that our offer to Shaun was way below what he was looking for and he was not expecting to be the top paid player but wanted parity with the like of Kenny Miller.
A lot changes in a few months and I think that his agent change may have a lot to do with it.He may also have heard what Stan is on at villa. He may think his knee might not last and think he needs to make hay while the sun shines. Who Knows?
But as i said months ago it is not a done deal if i was a betting man I would say it is probably 60/40 in our favour as he has a great fondness for our club but he is determined young man and as anyone who has watched my form with Mr Coral recently will know not to follow what I bet.

WHAT IS THE PCC? (from the PCC website www.pcc.org.uk)
The Press Complaints Commission is an independent body which deals with complaints from members of the public about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines. Our service to the public is free, quick and easy. We aim to deal with most complaints in just 25 working days - and there is absolutely no cost to the people complaining.
The PCC received 3,654 complaints in 2005. Of the complaints that were specified under the terms of the Code of Practice approximately two in three were about accuracy in reporting and approximately one in five related to intrusion into privacy of some sort. All complaints are investigated under the editors' Code of Practice, which binds all national and regional newspapers and magazines. The Code - drawn up by editors themselves - covers the way in which news is gathered and reported. It also provides special protection to particularly vulnerable groups of people such as children, hospital patients and those at risk of discrimination.
Our main aim with any complaint which raises a possible breach of the Code of Practice is always to resolve it as quickly as possible. Because of our success in this, the Commission had to adjudicate on only 30 complaints in 2005. That is a sign not of the weakness of self regulation - but its strength. All those which were critical of a newspaper were published in full and with due prominence by the publication concerned.
As well as dealing with complaints, the PCC deals with a substantial number of calls from members of the public about our service and about the Code. In 2005 we dealt with approximately 8,550 enquiries by telephone, fax and email. This is an encouraging sign of the accessibility of the Commission to members of the public.
The success of the PCC continues to underline the strength of effective and independent self regulation over any form of legal or statutory control. Legal controls would be useless to those members of the public who could not afford legal action - and would mean protracted delays before complainants received redress. In our system of self regulation, effective redress is free and quick.

of course i was happy after benfica but this site is far too euphoric at times, I am a realist, we have achieved nothing yet, that is not negative.
Telfer is a poor player is realism, I think you will find a 100% of my comments are realism rather than 90% negative as you say

There's one thing glaringly wrong about your previous post... Telfer is NOT a poor player. He is poor in your opinion, which makes a nonsense of your 'realism' statement.
Also, there's nothing wrong with being euphoric after a famous victory. If we go on to lose every remaining Champions League game, we can still look back with pride at that victory on Tuesday. Of course, I don't particularly think we will lose all the remaining games, but I for one, will still be a Celtic supporter "win, lose or draw"!

Mr Broadfoot has invented a new Rankers Myth to-day - towards the end of his preview of tonight's game he states that Rangers problem is in 're-discovering the early season form'!!! Last time I looked this was early season, or is he referring to a scrambled 1-0 over Motherwell and a valiant draw with Dunfermline!
GL2 do you have email I can contact you re your PC probs? (Can't see a Greenock man stuck)
Hail hail

Ok I think your point of view is that Telfer is a bad player, no amount of decent/good performances will make you change your mind and that is it.
You would have changed a central defensive partnership that has been very good for us this season just to get the guy out of the team (he is only in because our first choice right back is currently injured) and would have played a centre half out of position just to do this.
Am I right in saying this?

Out of interest - in a one on one comparison disregarding other positions or effect on the team - Is Paul Telfer doing better than Caldwell would have done at right back?

I have it on good authority. Ok I will name my source. His name was Gordon Strachan. He told me that the name of one of the guys who wanted Naka off on Saturday in the first 30 minutes was a certain Mr. Shelbourne seated in Block 1 row 9 seat 26. :-)

GreenLion,
I called my mate who now confesses it was one of Shaun's cousin's mates! That additional link in the chain always casts huge doubt.
I was obviously unaware of this when i posted. Furthermore, he was going into the home end at Iprox, therefore i now withdraw any credence anyone may have placed on my earlier post.
Last time i trust anyone from anywhere further north than the Barras!!!!!
