Celtic Champions League hopes could do with a Uefa Cup run

There are 10 clubs seeded higher than Celtic who are certain to be in the Champions League group stage next season, Barcelona, Sevilla, Roma, Inter Milan, Lyon, Porto, Benfica, PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Real Madrid, Valencia, Liverpool and Arsenal will all enter the third qualifying round, and will most probably progress, leaving only two places left in Pot 2.

Bayern Munich and AC Milan are both just outside a Champions League position. Milan look likely to move up the table, but Bayern continue to make heavy weather of their season, losing again on Saturday. They face each other in this seasons quarter finals, so one could still win the tournament and automatically qualify for next season. On paper it would suit Celtic for Bayern to be eliminated.

The second qualification spot from The Netherlands will be decided by a post season four team tournament, where Ajax and Alkmaar, both seeded higher than Celtic, will compete.

Progress to the Champions League knock out stage this season was helped enormously by their Pot 2 status, but we will need three from Milan, Bayern Munich, Ajax and Alkmaar to enter the same Pot next season.

Celtic only won three games in all their previous Champions League campaigns against a Pot 1 or 2 team. It might take a run to the latter stages of the Uefa Cup, where coefficient points are easier to collect, to bring the the club back to its 2005/2006 level.

    Talking about Neil Lennon

Former Celtic goalkeeper Rab Douglas has launched a vociferous defence of his former team-mate, Neil Lennon, who has recently been the victim of even more intense media scrutiny.
Big Rab, who is now at Leicester City, has eulogised about the character of the Celtic Captain, with some Celtic fans perceiving Lenny's well publicised on-pitch antics to be petulant and not becoming of a Celtic Captain.
However, Rab has defended Lenny robustly.
Rab said: “It sickens me the kind of stuff Lenny has to put up with. The very people who give him vile abuse for 90 minutes are two-faced when it comes to Lenny responding with a gesture back. Then they go running to the first available steward or policeman or phone-in and complain bitterly when really they should be looking at themselves.”
Rab continued: “Lenny's no angel and he'd be the first to admit that himself. But given what he has to endure it's understandable if now and again he reacts angrily. I appreciate it's not perfect for a Celtic Captain to react with a one-fingered salute and maybe deep down he'll regret that now. But he's only human and people wouldn't believe the abuse that's thrown at him during games.”
Rab added: “I've heard most of it as a team-mate and it's horrible. I'd find it impossible to ignore.”
Douglas, who is out of favour at Leicester City and has been linked with a move to Gretna, also provided evidence of Neil Lennon's character.
Rab said: “Lenny pays his own way to most supporters functions when he knows there are expenses available. I've known him to pay for flights and accommodation to go to presentations and he's happy to do it. When Lenny's in among the fans he's fantastic with them. He's top drawer.”
Rab continued: “He doesn't just stay as long as he has to, he goes out of his way to show his appreciation of the supporters. I've seen him give away boots and kit on the spur of the moment because it's for a good cause. Lenny's also only too pleased to make hospital visits and you can't put a price on the satisfaction that's provided for the sick children he's helped cheer up or elderly supporters.”
Rab added: “There's so much he's done that people will never hear of, simply because he's not concerned about it being known.”
However, with most of the criticism of Neil Lennon being directed at the Celtic Captain for what has happened on the pitch, Rab Douglas provided insight into Neil Lennon the Celtic player, the winner.
Rab said: “Every ground Lenny plays at he's slaughtered and in a way I think it's because he's seen as a key man for Celtic. People just want to get at him and put him off.”
Rab explained: “Lenny's a bad loser, but only because he wants to win so much. I remember him losing the plot even in 5-a-sides and we've all seen him having a bust-up with his own team-mates. That's simply because he wants to be as successful as possible. His record there speaks for itself.”
Rab continued: “There wasn't a player at Celtic in my time who didn't appreciate what Lenny brought to the team. I often wondered why he carried on taking the stick, why he didn't just get away from Scottish football. But then I'd see him laugh off the stick and be all the more determined to get trophies for Celtic.”
Rab added: “Lenny's one of the best professionals I've ever met in terms of his preparation and will to win. Being Captain of Celtic means a lot and now he's close to picking up a second successive title.”
Rab ended: “Would you rather have someone who didn't bat an eyelid when they lost? I know who I'd rather have

Is it not about time the weighting of co-efficient pints was changed. Surely with the CL being the premier competition more points should be given for victories in it, compared to the 'easier' UEFA cup?

Is anyone aware of other sports ranking points. Is the number of points one determined by the ranking of the opposing team? Surely thta would be fairer.

And how many points are Celtic due this year compared to our neighbours? it waould be scandalous if the totals were similar.

I find it a little depressing that Big Rab even needs to stand up for Neil Lennon. Not only has he performed outstandingly on the pitch for over 6 years and 300 games but off it he has faced the kind of religious intolerance and bigotry previously experienced by Celtic and many of its followers.

On the article itself, I know the benefits of a UEFA Cup run but the short term pain of reading CQN in the aftermath of the 'drop down' would be too much to handle. I often imagine a CQN prequel from the 90's when surely there would be CQN heart attacks and square go's all round!!!!!

    Very good point Paul.

Not The View published a European Coefficient section throughout the Champions League which had ourselves and befica neck and neck.

We pulled ahead after our win, and they got level(ish) after the game in Lisbon.

However, by the time the home leg against Milan came round they had started to pull ahead of us as they were playing easier opposition in the UEFA.

Seems to be a bit of Catch 22, stay in the CL and get more money but risk slipping down the coefficient rankings.

Actually, unless Rangers capitulate at home to ICT or away to St Mirren (which is inlikely), we cannot clinch it at home to Motherwell.

However, there is a strong possibility that Hearts could go to Ibrox on Saturday 21st April knowing that a win would render it mathematically impossible for Rangers to win the title... now wouldn't that be ironic?! I can hear the discussions at Tynecastle already: "Do we let them win and risk missing out on the UEFA Cup, or do we look after ourselves and go for the win, given that they're not going to win the title regardless?"

Whatever happens in the Rangers v Hearts game, Celtic should sew it up at Kilmarnock the following day (assuming that they first beat Dundee Utd and Motherwell!), still leaving the way open for a Championship party at home to Hearts on April 29th.

    Bring it on!

And with the slap of a hand
He had landed as an only son
His mother and father said "what a lovely boy"
We'll teach him what we learned
Ah yes, just what we learned
We'll dress him up warmly and
    We'll send him to school
It'll teach him how to fight
    To be nobody's fool

Oh, oh, what a lonely boy
    Oh, what a lonely boy
    Oh, what a lonely boy

In the summer of '53 his mother
    Brought him a sister
But she told him "we must attend to her needs"
"She's so much younger than you"
Well, he ran down the hall and he cried
Oh, how could his parents have lied
When they said he was an only son
He thought he was the only one

Oh, oh, what a lonely boy
    Oh, what a lonely boy
    Oh, what a lonely boy

    [Instrumental Interlude]

He left home on a winter day, 1969
And he hoped to find all the love
He had lost in that earlier time
    Well, his sister grew up
    And she married a man

    Sir Paul

As always, I read with interest your very interesting piece, on Celtic's possible or probable standing in the Euro Cup Co-efficients Table.

Not being a student of Arcana... I was thankful for your illumination on that branch of the Alchemist's Art.

Being the patient and understanding individual that I am, I am amazed at the determination of many in over-looking the obvious solution to the whole caboodle.

No matter what or what not the co-efficient that we receive, next year in the Cup Tourney,is........
Celtic could look with confidence in a triumphant procession through te Tournament, if they, SIMPLY..

Increased, their WINNING PERCENTAGE... IN EUROPEAN AWAY GAMES!

I say this without fear of contradiction,
As long as Celtic continue to lose games in that Tourney, whenever they leave the Shores of Albion...
they shall never be a serious contender.

Paul,pal...you know that you and I have discussed this very suicidal act, of simply refusing to win or really even tie, away from home in Europe, that Celtic have introduced into their Performance, limits their ability to progress.
    That habit, must be eliminated.

    For every problem there is a solution!(Who said that?........ed)( Besides,me?...... Tommy Edison..Menlo Park,1888)

Why in the world, have the powers that should be,be...at Parkhead....
have failed to try, the idea of arriving at their opponents domain ..TWO or THREE days, EARLY?
Acclimatization..could be the Answer to their LEETLE PROBLEM!

It may Woik...... and it Soitenly... CAN'T HOIT!

A statistician's perspective on the recent run of results.

How many goals per game have Celtic scored in the League?

    # Goals/game # Games
    0 2
    1 10
    2 14
    3 2
    4 2
    5 1

Hence in 39% of the games played Celtic have scored 1 or fewer goals; in 84% of the games we have scored 2 or less goals.
That rate of scoring illustrates how easily a game can swing against Celtic----one bad ref call in favour of the other side, and we have a 1-1 draw or a 1-0 loss. Two bad calls can result in 2-2 draw etc.

The influence of a small number of bad calls against Celtic can be seen even more clearly by the Margins of Celtic's victories in the League.

Margin of Win (Goals) # Games
    1 15
    2 4
    3 3
    4 1

In 65% of the games that we won the margin was 1 goal. Clearly the odds will swing against a team with that level of performance.

The message is clear, get a striker and forwad playing midfielder as priorities.

At the beginning of the season the defence was the concern. Now the priorities are elsewhere.

There is no shortcut to quality. Hmmm.

Viewfae, Kojo, Tony Mowbry left Hibs where he found them; eighth in the league. Pretty, but pretty ineffective, football.

I beleive the West Brom fans are less than happy with his management at the moment and they are by no means certs to go up to the Premiership with him in charge.

    Two game crisis?

Have you been aware, that when we examine, closely, the past past victories, Celtic have been delving deep,deep,deep,deep,..only a combination of incredible fighting fortitude, lathered generously with a slab of ole fashioned JAM... have prevented a Six or Seven game crises?

And do not hide behind, the idea that a winning attitude from the fans, is all that is required to ensure a winning team!

If you do, then I have a little starter home in the Bronx, that is just asking for an owner, who is willing to provide some T.L.C!

Mr. Strachan has done a wonderful job.....

However, my gratitude only stretches to TWO GAMES....TOPS!

That is how I am... And that is how I'll remain.

This feeling that I am experiencing... regarding the possibility... that there are Two Feet of Clay, that Mr.Strachan may be hiding under his brogans...
    won't go away.

When I see his non-positive re-action to the glaring facts that are piling up........

    Miller is worse than useless.

Jiri is ..well Jiri is... I do not Know, what Jiri is!
What I do know, is JIRI IS NOT A FULL TIME FOOTBALL PLAYER!

    Gravesen is not dependable.

    Lenno Holds Back The Team!

Beattie....... Don't make me laugh!...on second thoughts... Make me Laugh!....
    I sure could use one!

I have given the above examples of Mr. Strachan's folly in sticking with a slew of Horses that have escaped from the barn, and are running freely and willy nilly.

The time to close the proverbial is way,way past.

Mr.Strachan should have barricaded that door ...long ago!

    My dear friend,Thismancraig,@16 .01

Talk of speculation in the Managerial Market is Premature.... but is soitenly not nonsense..

One must always be alive to the possibility of a sudden tragic halt to Mr.Strachan's ebullient and soul satisfying success, which we have happily enjoyed......so far!

It is not his past success, that alarms me....it is his PRESENT HUSBANDRY, in the logical utilization of his Player OPTIONS.

He is not showing up well in that respect,no not at all, at all!

Stubborn opposition to change in his selection process is not a virtue.

The recent G.A. defeat underlines that fact......

Miller was never a wise choice.... at the best of times.
But now that Miller has settled into a total NON SCORING MODE, which is a step down even, from his former Mode of occasional scorer, did not merit him a start against the G.A.
Those two gift chances that he spurned, annoyed and inflamed my already raw disdain, for his frenetic and fumbling antics.

Then for Strachan to add insult to injury by having the audacity to fly in the face of common sense... and go ahead and start Miller against Falkirk?

Surely, because of Strachan's intransigence in refusing to bend to public opinion, you must begin to understand, why I am becoming slightly less enamored in the inherent perspicacity of our present incumbent in charge.

Yes, looking down the road and preparing for eventualities certainly does no harm

We should always be aware that Alfred did not purposely set out to burn the pastries.....
    It was just.... well, simply...

As you know from past submissions, I never give a fig when presented by past achievements.

I believe that Strachan is showing a side of his character that I am not impressed by.

I used the term Public ,when I should have used Common Sense Demands that he should re-think his selective process.

After all, did the Miller inclusion at Falkirk, which flew in the face of common sense, after his horrendous effete display against the G.A. ....not smack of a.. "get in your face"...."the public be darned"... the fanning of fingers, to the nose.... attitude, by Strachan?

My gripe with WGS is the style of play, how many good games have we played, have we been lucky in some games? It’s no wonder people leave early they are bored !!!! Mowbery offers character, a men well respected by everyone he meets, his philosophy on the game is compatible with Celtics history and with the resources offered at Celtic I believe he could create a dynasty similar to that of Stein. To compare his record at Hibs with that of his potential at Celtic is somewhat unfair, two different clubs with two different levels expectation. As always I could be talking rubbish, but when WGS decides enough is enough Tony might take us on a magical mystery tour around Europe.

    Afternoon all,

I've tried to keep away from this, but after a few 'discussions' with our bedraggled media, a few passed comments between Noel90 and myself, and finally the laughable dragnet to get 'gen' against Celtic has prompted me to drop a word or two.

In any substantial crowd and I include Rangers' supporters in this, there will always be a few who if viewed as representative will on occasions give the vast majority a bad name.

What happened and was posted on U-tube and was broadcast on television from Pamplona and Celtic Park was not however a few people behaving badly. It was the manifestation of a mass demonstration of both conscious and unconscious cultural myopia where the gift of respect for fellow man's beliefs was trod upon in a cattle stampede of supremacist nonsense.

This is causing great wailing and gnashing of teeth in the corridors of mediaburbia as they see potentially one strand of their livelihood shrivelling up like a staked dracula.

They have to alter the agenda and guess what?..... They are successfully doing so.

Bigotry, sectarianism, and the mass-insulting of a 'fellow' Christian nation is now no longer the question of the day!

The poser now is ...Who, if anyone threw a bottle or anything else at a bus, during the game, after the game, or at anytime, anywhere in Milan or anyplace? - The Martini question!

Fishing for any incident, a hundred of which took place in Glasgow last week after the Hibs/Killie game but are not deemed newsworthy, that can be attached to the name of Celtic will lead to cries of 'there we are ...... they're just the same' and the real cancer will once again meander on its malignant path.

Anwhere in this world including weddings, funerals, rugby, tennis, religious festivals, and even parliamentary proceedings where drink is involved will lead to incidents of 'unruly behaviour'.

But that unruly behaviour is not the same as encouraging, empathising, breeding, excusing and nurturing what was in evidence in Pamplona and in the south east area of Celtic Park.

Truth and honesty are crucial in this but believe me that any daft, irresponsible and unacceptable incident no matter how isolated will be used as a by-word for open season on 14,999 out of 15,000 Celtic Supporters.

All of a sudden any one alleged incident will equate to the demonstrable medieval behaviour of 5,999 out of 6,000 Rangers fans.

In fact those with their grubby fingers on the keyboards will have achieved more as they are already attempting to do.

Morning sofa's, quotations, bulletins, and letters' pages will be devoted to the one real Rangers fan (Edward, fame awaits you) who didn't clap and sing along to Tina and her twisted lyrics, or who didn't chant the disgusting comments at Jack McConnell's wife, and he will become the spokesperson for all things Ibroxian, traditional, and cultural!

And guess what we will be back where we started; a dishonest media, reporting on dishonest football, within an Association with a nagging stench, in a country with a twisted gut.

That is not good enough for me; not good enough for Celtic, not good enough for Scottish football, and definitely not good enough for this country that in so many other things has led the world but has existed for too long in the retarded shackles of 17th Century absurdity.

The time is coming soon when all right thinking people of whatever creed, colour, race or political persuasion need to respond.

But when we do it will not be in in bite size pieces as we react to every little innuendo or accusation.

It will be a thoughful, positive and constructive response which will draw the poison from the abcess of intolerance and hatred with which too many people are still infected.

Whoever it was that posted the fuse that highlighted the deepseated bigotry has done us all a service, intentionally or otherwise.

Don't let this window shut on our fingers by responding to bait about incidents in Milan that in this context, don't matter a jot.

Let the bigots scream and wail; let them beat their heartless breasts, and gnash their toothless gums.

Let their cries of no surrender and perverted cries to wallow in blood echo from their gutless sphincters all the way through the corridors of UEFA, FIFA, all the way around the world!

Only then need we respond and we will, and perhaps then we will kick start Scotland's future!

"Our supporters have rightly been praised by all foreign police forces involved in our European games so far and we have a wide range of measures in place to encourage positive fan behaviour.

"The club and supporters organisations have repeatedly urged fans to avoid making any kind of one-armed salute, because they will be misinterpreted, and it is important to reiterate that message.

"Rangers have been campaigning vigorously for common standards on crowd behaviour to be implemented both domestically and at European level.

"We are proud of the standards that we have set at Ibrox which we believe are among the highest.

"Our supporters have responded tremendously to all appeals from the club and from supporters organisations to show Rangers in the best possible light and we are grateful for their continued support.

"Equally, we do not hesitate to take action against anyone who lets the club down."

    - Martin Bain 21st Feb 2007

An Ibrox source told BBC Sport: "The Scottish legal system provides a mechanism for compensation to be awarded as part of the criminal process.

"Where any person is convicted of an offence, the circumstances of which led to any financial consequences, including the imposition of any sanction by a governing body, there exists the possibility that a request can be made for an order of compensation in respect of the sum."

A Uefa spokesman said that European football's governing body had accepted Rangers' explanation.

"The disciplinary unit will not be taking any further action," he said.

"It is also the sign of the red hand of Ulster and this convinced the disciplinary unit to end their investigation."

    ANNAOAN.

Never use the term and don't accept the concept! Don't embrace it. Never will! But do understand why it arose!

That stance is taken by many Rangers supporters as well!

The point I was so poorly trying to make is that there exists a positive future for Celtic, Scottish Football, and Scotland in general if we really want it.

Continually responding in a 'my dad is bigger than yours way' as has been the reaction for years in most media outlets, supporters sites, fanzines, and direct conversations is a microcosm of the same symptoms that caused disputes of all shades to drag on long after their raison d'etre had dissolved.

This can be done in Glasgow and Scotland, but only by those who have a clear and rational vision of a future that builds on the best and discards the rotten timbers of the past.

Those who won't embrace such a future or only do so through the fear rather than enlightenment will merely fade and eventually die away to the point of irrelevance.

Their comments and utterances are as relevant now as they were when they allowed the hanging of Thomas Aikenhead.

Anyway, I won't post on this subject again as I am more concerned for Kojo's well-being as he seems to think that GS has one game to win or he is out!

Could this "I am not anti-Celtic" hypocrite from The Herald letters page and repeated on NewsNow be the same Gordon Smith that was mentioned on here yesterday for being a guest at an Ayrshire sportsman's dinner with a decidedly anti-Celtic agenda?

Don't genuinely know the answer to that other than to say that the man mailing as Gordon Smith writes:

"I am not anti-Celtic, however I did have difficulty in recognising the great ambassadors for Scottish football Rob Emerson portrayed in his letter (Sport Letters, Mar 20).

Are these the same ambassadors who in 2002/03 set the record for most arrests at an English Premiership ground (source: English Police records), had a flight diverted to Cardiff following abuse of cabin crew and had a run-in with Spanish riot police in Vigo? Following these incidents, they were not only unpunished by UEFA, they were given an award.

However, this is not a time for Old Firm fans to attempt to score points off each other. In the event that Rangers are banned, who will suffer? There is no doubt, with only one team making a decent contribution, Scotland's coefficient would drop dramatically leading to a reduction in teams playing in Europe and a reduction in Champions League representation. The champions, who at present are either straight into the group stages or at worst face only one qualifier would then have to face two rounds with the increased possibility of missing out on the group stages.

Therefore, in the interests of Scottish football as a whole we should all get behind Rangers in their efforts and refrain from petty points scoring.

    Gordon Smith, by email"

Having been at both the Liverpool and Blackburn matches and viewing the Celtic ends at both games from neutral territory and seeing absolutely no trouble ( apart from one idiot in a Rangers strip invading the pitch at Ewood) I have major problems with his statement:

"Are these the same ambassadors who in 2002/03 set the record for most arrests at an English Premiership ground (source: English Police records),"

Even before I set out to tackle the rubbish The Herald have published as an unchallenged fact I smelt a rat.

A very similar claim was made on a Rangers website recently listing "the Blackburn riot with the highest number of arrests at a Premier League ground" was listed in a long column of imaginary Celtic wrongdoing including such gems as Celtic Park being closed by the authorities during World War 2 for pro-Nazi chanting.

As usual with the old Old Firm "tar them with the same brush" technique there is a tiny smidgeon of fact that has given rise to the big lie e.g. The Second World War did indeed involve the Nazis and the Republic of Ireland which does have historical links with Celtic FC remained neutral so.... (just make up the rest as long as it blackens Celtic).

    The facts are these:

Yes! - there was trouble at Ewood Park which the Home Office confirm involved a relatively large number of arrests for minor offences- 16 Blackburn fans and 26 Celtic fans.

Having checked with sources such as Blackburn Rovers, the police and the local evening newspaper I have been told that most of the arrests of "Celtic fans" INSIDE the ground related to a large number of forgeries which caused problems with fans trying to take their rightful places with genuine tickets for seats which were already occupied.

The police understandbly wouldn't allow people to wander around the ground once the match had started and these fans were arrested mainly to force them to exit.

And there were also problems outside at kick-off when Celtic fans with the correct tickets were locked out.

My research also reveals that there was some minor trouble between home fans and Celtic fans in the wrong end when messrs Sutton and Hartson scored.

Some Celtic fans were arrested solely to be detained for their own safety.

So as you can see the arrest figure was not a reliable guide to those actually charged with offences.

But Mr Smith's Big Lie which suggest that Celtic fans "set" the record for "most arrests at an English Premiership ground" is in fact disproved by the 2002-03 Home Office figure.

The England v Turkey game held the very same season in April 2003 produced 121 arrests at Sunderland's Stadium of Light (which you have guessed it was a Premiership ground that season).

I was there covering that match and I saw very real violence from English fans who in mobs of 20-30 attacked Turkish fans in what really was a full-scale riot.

A little bit more research from Mr Smith might have shown that in 2005, 50 Newcastle fans were arrested before during and after the Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland.

So where do you get that record from, Mr Smith?

PS:One other thing you got wrong, Mr Smith we won TWO awards for our good behaviour from UEFA and FIFA.

    My dear friend, Tiny

Before we advance any deeper into this possible quagmire.
    Keep this fact in mind.

I at no time promoted the replacement of Strachan, by Mr. Mowbray or any other contender, for the future incumbency of the Celtic managerial post.

I simply agreed with the initial subscriber that Mr.Mowbray's candidacy to a vacancy, should it unhappily occur, as being an excellent one.
Furthermore, should circumstances warrant, I still believe that Mr. Mowbray would be a name to conjure with, if in fact a replacement was needed.

Your advocacy of Sam Allardyce, could also be a fine choice.
I have no idea, currently, who I would personally propose.

The thrust of my complaint against Strachan, at the present time, is mainly directed at his intransigence in selecting a side that is virtually beaten, before it even treads the field of battle.
Owing to the fact that he persists is loading it with Dead Wood.

    As a compadre once remarked..

    "It just ain't horse sense!"

I expect a more active reaction from my Manager, than I am receiving.
A manager must be, Ideally, Proactive, ... but Strachan is not even showing a hint...so far.... of any Reaction to the oncoming danger.
He should have adjusted his stirrups to suit the length of his legs, FOUR OR FIVE GAMES AGO!

The games are now Dwindling down...to a precious few!

The Dundee United encounter could forge a key link,in the outcome of his fate,in my estimation, if we suffer an ignominious set-back, there.

You are all too familiar with the credo that I espouse.

I do not tolerate incompetence. Never have and never will.

Strachan, despite his astounding success in reaching this point in the league program,is now beginning to struggle and show a disturbing side to his personality.
He is still dwelling, on to his past methods of team selection.

The time has come that he must reflect on what has lead to his present difficulties...and take corrective steps in his approach to team selection.....in short...

    He must fish...or cut bait!

I am not being disloyal, but I refuse to be blinded by the glory of

    PAST SUCCESS!

That, and Five Dollars will get you a cup o' Java at the Local Coffee house.

    Sean,

I appreciate that this off topic and apologise for that.

Being thinking for a while about high profile footballers plying their trade in the Premiership and why do the play for clubs like Newcastle and Spurs etc.

I realise that these are both proud clubs with a good/decent fan bases, however they never win anything and are unlikely to win things in the future as the rich will get richer and therefore more likely to win the league and cups available.

What was driving my thoughts was my pipe dream of seeing Damien Duff and Robbie Keane (hence the clubs mentioned) playing for Celtic.

The way I see it is that if we are winning our league and getting to the last 16 or better of the Champions League on regular basis then surely that would be better than playing for a mid to low placed Premiership club.

What do you believe Damien Duff will be earning per week at Newcastle (if that is not too rude).

What do you believe was Duff’s reason’s for signing for Newcastle?

Last question promise, Do you think that we will ever see either of the two players mentioned above (hoping Duff has expressed to you a desire to play for the hoops in a moment of weakness)playing in the hoops.

International week makes for a slow week on Celtic news.
So as we scour t'internet for items to make the work day move faster, sometimes we stumble across little gems which may or may not reflect on items discussed here in the past.

To the point (About time Kojo's editor or scribe might interject.)

I found this article on Texas Rangers (boo boo boo)where they are buying back the naming rights to their stadium.

    NAMING RIGHTS

Agreement to end the deal was prompted by the difficulties currently being experienced by their sponsor, Ameriquest, in the US sub prime lending market.
The club, baseball for the uninitiated, have been trying to buy back the naming rights for some time and the current crisis in the market has prompted Ameriquest to agree.
So is there a lesson for us who saw an opportunity in the past to gain some revenue from selling the name?
    JP Morgan Celtic Park anyone?

It seems the Texas Rangers (booooo) management saw better value and marketing opportunities in regaining and retaining their own name.

Kojo - Referring to one of your earlier posts: -
    a) "Miller is useless" He's not, he's just not a goalscorer.

    b) "Jiri - Not a full time football player", nice play with words! of course he's not he rarely sees more that 70 minutes, and as you've agreed in the past has been consistently played out of position so what can we expect?
For what it's worth since I read on this blog another Celtic fhan referring to this Celtic player as a "Diddy" I've been watching, when possible, JJ closely - he's not the worst player on the park, has been defensively good, and for some reason has replaced Paul Telfer as the CQN whipping Bhoy, I for one hope Strach keeps him for Lenny's place. For what it's worth I thought the bad parts of the Falkirk game were when the team just couldn't or wouldn't get the ball out to him, IE - Naylor hoofing in up the park when Jarosik was in miles of open space waving to him.
    Another year maybe?

    c) Gravesen - Don't know, I think he CAN contribute, again seems out of position (if he actually has one)???

    d) Lennon - See my past posts on the subject, emotionally - love the guy, pragmatically - thanks for the memories.

    e) Beattie - Sometimes great sometimes not, time to call it a day with Mr. beattie - last season.

Strachan - Hope, no HOPE he changes course I'm also worried that he has that rare mangers disease of not seeing past certain players (of course supporters don't have do we?)

First time in yonks I've looked forward to an International week, because I think this team needs a rest, any chance all the Celtic players do a Bazza for the Georgia game?

I'm fascinated by the amount of criticism being received by Mr Strachan on his fielding of Millar and Beattie.

He has little or no option.

JVOH has been struggling with injuries.
Magic has been absent for some time due to injury, exhaustion or disinterest.
It would be too much to heap the responsibility on a young inexperienced forward.

So the manager has only to answer for his apparent distrust of fielding Riordan. I suspect there is a story we are not being told.

Let's hope JVOH and Magic come back from international duty injury free and a bit fitter.

There is no need to get the jitters.

I have saw it recently that even tonight Alan Preston said that although both have a problem they are worse than us.... Spiers said it is not a small minority but a large minority which still says its still a minority so I took it he is talking that it is a minority in the whole of Scotland.

Whitedoghunch - I have not always been a fan of said manager but do admire his achievements. He was an absolute gent - said that the games against us had been really tough but that he had enjoyed them. There are some on here who would not give him the time of day - but the man behind the public charade is quite different. Mind you there are some on here who have long held beliefs about our own manager that I know, from personal experience, to be quite undeserved.

Celtic_ first:Thanks for those kind words about my earlier piece on Gordon Smith and the Big Lie about the supposed "Blackburn Riot."

I know some CQNers think I get a bit pedantic on attacks on Celtic and our players, fans and traditions.

But if our enemies get away with the sort of twisted propaganda from Gordon Smith and the bluenoses on the media bus then next thing you will know they will be claiming that 10,000 bottles were hurled at the Scottish Press coach and all the windaes put out!

Fight every lie, half-truth, innuendo and distortion about the Celtic Family with the truth and as many facts as can be provided is the name of my game.

Rangers may pay Media House a fortune to mitigate their shameful behaviour, but I will gladly give my services free to Celtic to fight the dark forces arrayed against Celtic.

And that means challenging every piece of bulls**t they try to throw at us.

Vern: You asked three questions earlier. I will try to give you a straight response- even if it may be not what you were looking for.

A)What do you believe Damien Duff will be earning per week at Newcastle (if that is not too rude).

Q)I'm told that he came to Newcastle for £65,000-70,000-a-week- which as you know is well out of Celtic's reach.

Q)What do you believe was Duff’s reason’s for signing for Newcastle?

A)Duff says publicly it was purely to get regular first team football because he was often the victim of Mourinho's rotation system. I believe that there was also the temptation of another big-money signing-on fee after the Chelsea move didn't work out and his agent was keen for him to move on.But I don't think moving to a mid-table club was very shrewd in career terms although it gave his bank balance another mighty boost.

    Q) Last question promise, Do you think that we will ever see either of the two players mentioned above (hoping Duff has expressed to you a desire to play for the hoops in a moment of weakness)playing in the hoops.

Duff has never expressed any desire to play for Celtic in any conversations I have been privy to and, sadly, on his form at Newcastle, mediocre to say the least, I am not sure Gordon Strachan would want him even if he agreed to halve his salary demands. I can't see either signing for Celtic- not until they are Roy Keane-style age anyway.

Would be a good idea considering the amount of mince that comes out of it.

Waste not want not,and all that.

    Let's get this straight.

Gordon Strachan has to pick his team according to "public opinion" or "common sense",otherwise we
sack the manager, and replace him with either Sam Allardyce,or Tony Mowbray.

I have never met anybody called public, and when I do I will treat his/her opinion the exact same as anybody elses who is not the manager of Celtic.

I also can't recall sense being very common.

How come if we signed any players from Bolton(including Kevin Nolan, who has been suggested as "good" target for us) or WBA,or Hibernian for that matter, they are "not Celtic class" but yet we have people on here advocating their managers,as somehow a step forward for Celtic?

One guy who is known for pretty formations, like say,the red arrows, and one guy who is known for bad moustaches, taking bungs, and a strange habit of annoying Arsene Wenger.

Never has the old manager's often used quote"I am only one or two game's away from the sack at any one time"been more apt, than on here.

Thank God the "listen to the fans" brigade are ignored.

    and er Humbug

You use the word rationality but then advance the unprovable hypothesis that TB's team would walk this league. I could be just as daft and say compare Boruc, Naka and JVOH to Gould, McKay and Donnelly.

The one constant feature we have, and I don't accept your argument that this is the worst standard of SPL (MON faced poorer opposition- just look at what Berti Vogts had available for selection then), is the standard of European competitiveness.

This team is performing at a similar level to the MON team and much superior to any team of the 90's in European competition.

Now unless you are saying that all the other leagues in Europe have taken a nosedive of equal proportions, there's no way you can convincingly explain why we are more competitive now than we were then.

If you are saying that everybody's got worse within a decade, could you advance any rational thought for that argument.

I would admit that three defeats in three games and the misguided belief that Kenny Miller should be a first-choice centre forward have some supporters currently questioning WGS's sanity, but when you feel the need to reference three players who served the hoops with such indistinction during a relatively barren trophy spell in order to justify your case I'd suggest it's time for bed.

    I don't think anyone forgets.
    We remember all too well.
Unfortunately we have a tendency to be very myopic and do not see the big picture.

Strachan, sorry, Mr. Strachan, inherited a side that was dead man walking. It was out on its feet. Past its sell by date, and like the fans shell shocked, despondent and lacking in faith, hope and confidence.
He deserves recognition for the rebuilding job which he accomplished in trying circumstances while winning the SPL.
He outwitted the much vaunted best young manager/coach in France and therefore the world.(Well DJ and the loyal laptops said so so it must be true.)
He will see off his 3rd Rangers manager by the end of next season when Wally and Ally lose the benefit of a dead cat bounce and trail behind Team 3.

So please let's enjoy these triumphs and do not demean them just because we do not see eye to eye with the manager.

    Tinytim,

it is rather difficult to do so living in Australia.

I do not forget what any one has done for Celtic.

But I care about Celtic more than any player or manager.

You continually harp on about people who are gone to try and advance your argument against Gordon Strachan's position as Celtic manager.

Martin O'Neill was a success, didn't like his style of football,he was blessed with far more money than the current incumbent, and his last season, just maybe have given you an inkling of what life under his magerial tenure may well have been like if he did not have Henrik Larsson in his team.

Tommy Burns, great player, who lacked pace, and couldn't tackle to save himself. As manager,he painted pretty pictures, but never quite managed to get them framed.

Neil Lennon, good positional sense, calm head(most of the times)and a heart of a lion. But as Eric Cantona, may have said,a hod carrier.Every team may think they need one,but a hod carrier nonetheless.

Bobo Balde, fearsome competitor, good in the air, regularly caught out of position, and makes your heart jump out of your chest every time he has the ball at his feet.

John Hartson, great goal scorer, skillful for a big man.Overweight, unfit and injury prone.

Grateful for what they gave to Celtic?

Of course I am,but they all had their limitations too.

As you said,we are supposed to be the greatest fans in the world,so why the criticism and outright dislike of a man who has turned the club inside out from top to bottom, and at the same time brought us two titles in a row.

I am well aware Gordon Strachan has limitations,as does every manager, and player, for that matter.

The holy grail of the perfect manager, who wins all the trophies whilst playing exciting attractive football all the time with superb players in every position is a fantasy.

And dismissing Gordon Strachan,or any one esle for that matter, because he doesn't come up to these wildy far fetched ideals is just nonsense.

How can you possibly compare him to Lou Macari,John Barnes and Liam Brady.

They after all won a grand total of NO titles between them.

Of course, that would only be because all the other teams in the country were superb when those three gentlemen were Celtic manager, and they are all rubbish now.

    Would it not?

Except as another poster pointed out above, for this argument to have any rational behind it,it would have to follow that all the European teams have had a similar drop in standards,as we seem to be holding out own in those competitions far better than than the Tommy Burns team who "would walk this league".

    What.

Has the whole football continent suffered a major fall in standards at the same time, just so you can state that Gordon Strachan is not a good manager?

For that appears to be the only reason you have for criticising his stewardship.

Oh of course, and he aslo doesn't produce a team that plays football like tha Brazil team of the 1970 World Cup Final.

When standards are set so ridiculously high,no one can possibly meet them.

And may I ask who you would suggest would be the next manager after you have got rid of the current one?

And explain how it would be good move for Celtic?

    Pablo,

    stay here,and behave yourself.

We all have wee tiffs,I have hundreds my self.

Geographically, and culturally the towns are very close while still alowing local rivalries to flourish.

One point for Mr GSmith to ponder is that the Darnelists were prevented from playing a Friendly in Bolton[because of the fear of general mayhem and unpleasantness]while shortly afterwards Manchester was more than happy to host numerous greenbrakeclub Bhoys for a COMPETITIVE fixture in the ECL.

During the late, unlamented Anglo-Scottish Cup I know Celtic fans caused a lot of trouble at a game in Burnley but we have definitely moved on since then. Can Mr GSmith say the same about the Plankton Loyal?

I've read with interest Kojo's last few posts where he claims that if we lose to Dundee United there could be a snowball effect whereby the Rangers revival bandwagon picks up speed and overtakes us all the way to the title.

I agree with him, I think he is on the money here, complacency has set in big time, footballing wise we've been awful for months,

even getting beat by Rangers at Parkhead, unthinkable over the last couple of season, hasn't shaken us awake.

Another defeat at Brockville has been dismissed as a minor blip. Will defeat at Tannadice be seen as another minor blip?

At what point do we recognise the danger signs? When we have to win at Ibrox on May 5th to stay top of the league?

A title collapse here will make Black Sunday look like a minor blip.

This team is not the Black Sunday team. The Black Sunday team was an old racehorse that had escaped a bullet for one more race around the track. Looking back I see an inevitability in it all - the gers/hearts penalty, the Hibs gubbing, 1 nil up and MON telling his players to defend the lead... Ah well.

This team is not that team.

    Let's wait and see eh?

I for one have not one but two bottles of babycham (I kid you not - special offer in the Strathaven co)chilling in readiness for when we win the league.

I have to agree there, I too am starting to get a wee bit concerned with our inability to score goals, a basic requirement for victory in football. We simply have to get back on track next weekend, and I think Derek Riordan should start, he actually seems to knows the route to goal.

We need 3 wins from 7 games or 9 points from 21 if you will.

We have lost 3 times (2 in a row) in the league this season and drawn 5 times (3 times over christmas). Clearly the timing of the defeats is worrying but to lose in the manner we did to Milan and then to Rangers is a massive blow to a team who hadn't lost in 7 months (Naylor, VofH never losing a league game for example).

So, the international break comes at the perfect time. I disagree with alot here though that I don't want to see any changes until the league is won. Getting over the line is the hardest part and we need to trust those players who have delivered thus far. I have no interest in Riordan suddenly being experimented (for that is what it would be) with up front. Likewise Doumbe or O'Dea or 'let's try Grav and Hartley'.

We have a fully functioning, entirely effective set of players who we know can deliver. They will.

Team to win the league is

    Boruc
    Wilson
    Naylor
    McManus
    Pressley

    Lennon
    Hartley
    Nakamura
    McGeady

    JVofH

Win 1 out of the next 3 league games and we can win the league at Ibrox. OK, it won't come to that but it's a helluva fallback position to have.

Share your admiration of Allardyce's achievements and have read some really good things about his off field attitude. One question though, would his chosen style of play not put you off? I know there is criticism of our current style but I'd like you to disregard that if you could.

If you're going to have a run of indifferent form it's always best to get it over with at the start of the season, rather than when the league reaches a serious stage.

Well as it´s Friday and the thread is probably about to be changed anyway. I noticed something interesting this morning on the Glasgow Herald. In the article with regards Celtic winning the league, some guy called The All Seeing Eye psoted this article. It was then pulled (i.e deleted). The exact same article is on the Scotsman buy a guy called Larsssonfixestheradio under the Kris Boyd asks fans to stop the sectarianism article and it hasn´t been pulled.

Paul67 I´d be interested to know if you would pull it from CQN and if so why ?

I´ll keep saying this until I am green and white striped in the face. There is no such thing as a red hand of ulster salute it´s a fallacy. I have yet to meet a Northern Irishman who is aware of it and proud of it.
    http://www.loyalistfm.net/new/articles.php?p=1396

It is therefore a Hitler salute. A Nazi salute. A fascist salute. Nothing else. A month ago Murray and Bain made a plea in person for UEFA to accept that it was indeed a paramilitary salute. This policy or vision of Glasgow Rangers future was brought about due to a need to avoid a hefty financial penalty. David Murrays inability to see this as an invitation to every right wing Rangers supporter to arms was due to his blindness for money. It was a bad tactical move in the eyes of the civilised world, hence why it was not reported in the Scottish media and embraced by a Rangers support as a minor victory after all their recent roubles with UEFA. UEFA not wanting to get involved in a high publicity campaign about Scottish & N.I loyalists performing the Nazi salute in Tel Aviv of all places were only too happy to brush this one under the carpet.

So it is in the history books that Rangers´s present management team appealed to UEFA to allow them to perform Nazi salutes and Uefa allowed them. Guess what ? four weeks later and at the next European away game. Thousands of Rangers fans are caught on camera singing Fu(k the Pope. The vast majority of their fans were up to it anyone witnessing the videos can clearly see and hear this. Lets be honest nobody is surprised and the continual reference to a minority of the Rangers support is a contemptable lie that is deep rooted in a bigoted nations psyche. Why is it only Rangers fans need segregated? The riot police waded into the Rangers fans deservedly who were throwing coins and objects at locals who were wearing Celtic strips and displaying Irish flags and blessing themselves. In Spain and in the rest of the world this is not a crime. The Rangers fans present in Spain were far too stupid and bigoted to realise this due to a lifetime of living in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Spain (their hosts) are predomintaley catholic and not to far away from Villareal and the insultsfrom last year are probably still fresh in the mind. Pamplona is the land of the red rag and the bull. How stupid and insensitive can a group of people be ?

Rangers at no time announced that anyone performing a Nazi salute will be banned for life from Rangers games and they are in a quandry with regards banning anyone from Ibrox or Rangers away games due to sectarian singing due to the ongoing inquiry about the recorded constant sectarian singing at the San Siro against Inter Milan in a stadium where no fans were allowed entry. They can´t exactly start to ban their own board of directors and high level officials and employees. It begs the question that Rangers´s chief executive is now advocating that no person in Europe should be subjected to such a bunch of violent raging drunken Nazi´s when Rangers are required to play away in Europe. Why should we have to put up with it in Scotland ? This is coming from Rangers themselves for goodness sake. Surely Jack Mc Connell should be doing something about it rather than trying to get his votes of of them by criticising the Spanish police. I think the majority of the Rangers crowd at Celtic Park got it mixed up when referring to his wife. Whatever next ? He´ll be advocating free school meals for every kid in Scotland soon to ensure his relection. Only in Scotland huh ?

bloke in my work was on a night out in town; stays on the riverside. walked it home along the north bank .. gets to the footbridge that goes over to Carlton Place .. hears a commotion.. looks round .. some (alleged) junkie lassie chucked herself off the bridge into the river ...

her female friend then jumps in to rescue her .. hits the water gets shock from the cold and scrambles to the bank leaving the original junkie bobbing about in the water ..

bloke in my work turns to the board with the safety ring.. and is about to chuck it in when male friend of two females shouts "gies that thing" and proceeds to chuck it into the river .. hitting the 1st junkie bird on the head ..

she dissappears for aout 10 seconds under water .. then pops up again .. and climbs into the ring .. then just lies there like its a jacuzzi party or something ..

a few minutes go by with no-one knowing what to do .. then a whirly bird appears and air rescues her from the river and disappears ..

no sign of any coppers anywhere .. so the bloke in my work sloped off home without giving any eye witness statement about the incident ..

quiet night out on a school night eh ..

Great post earlier on Aw Naw @13.02.
I get the feeling that we are now getting more Rangers "fans" from different parts of Britain hitching themselves onto their supporters, pushing an evil political agenda, with no interest at all in football. Some of them are very well-heeled and the wee teds will follow follow them.

The Rangers support needs reforming, they need a kind of pedagogical John Knox. Archie Knox could have been a contender.

A ban from Europe may make some of their real supporters react.

Something tells me that Rangers will be bought by a Russian.

Anyway, I know I've been out of circulation for a while but I've been doing some research.

This weekend our team could do something that has only been done twice before in my time. It could go fourcompetitive games in a row without scoring a goal.

Sack the manager I hear you say.

Well, history has some interesting precedents. The last time this happened was in 1992, and sacking the manager was as good a response as any. Although to be fair, the board was trhe real problem.

The time before that, if we'd sacked the manager (and the nil run cost us our place in a European final and the Scottish Cup) we'd have rewritten club history. If we'd sacked the strikers, who'd have got us to the European Cup Final?

Yes, Jock's team went four in a row with no goals at the end of 65/66. In a season in which they scored 166 goals in 60 games, they managed just 5 goals in their last 7 games. And one of those was very late. And it won us the league. At Fir Park. Isn't that good?

anyway isnt gordon strachan rubbish etc.

the more i hear whats going on in this phone-ins and the more i read the lazy rubbish in the press the more i think that its websites like this and the more extreme ones like followfollow and celticminded that actually set the agenda. it worries me a little that a concerted campaign by the mongos on followfollow can actually create a bit fo a stirr now. they do actually believe that there is a mhedia (as they put it) conspiracy against them. it all ties in with some srot of undermining of the traditions of scotland and some sort of dark papal plot to make scotland catholic. at least thats what i think they are driving at - i dont speak orc.

I think showtime shota would have been the same for us, a frustrating underachiever. Sometimes, the style just doesn't work for people who are prolific elsewhere - Brattback springs to mind.

The problem with Shota was he couldn't play through the middle or link up with a big striker (Ok, it was Stevie Thompson) unless it was on the counter attack.

A bit of topic but in these days of domestic apathy I quite enjoyed this, helps that it is a classic tune...

Had a wee listen to Tam and Stuart on radio Scotland. They are talking to Rob Jones of Hibs. Hardest player he`s played with/against, Justin Whittle. A Luigi Macari signing who couldn`t play because of the army holding on to him. (The other fellow, Gary Holt went on to play for Scotland.)
Big Rob was skillfully avoiding Tam Cowan`s inuendo. :-)

OK, I'll leave you with this.

I’ve just watched The Wind That Shakes The Barley. A film for freedom fighters everywhere.

We play at it now, freedom. I grew up as free as it gets. Who wants to play for Rangers anyway?

My children grew up that free too.

But still,I love the freedom songs, the good tunes, the noble words, the heroic deeds. Would I be that heroic? I hope I never have to find out. Not much chance now.

But it’s heroic, how it starts. Irish opressed against British opressors. (I wish I could say against English opressors, but the Scots assimilated a long time ago.)

And then, how quickly it became, for a time anyway, Irish against Irish. And lost its nobility. But then, we had our Glencoe, Scots against Scots, a small affair in the grand scheme of things, but great in the psyche.

And yet, we still have the flag wavers. Do they know, the flag wavers, how quickly that can become something else? Another film, Cabaret, where at the end they all sit in silence or stand and join in when the young, patriotic, National Socialists stand and sing their anthem of freedom and self determination. Look what happened next.

It has crystallized for me the disturbing feelings I’ve had at Ibrox when I saw the Union Jack waving guard of honour for the gladiators entering the ring. And when I saw the spectacular red white and blue corner at Celtic Park with their huge Butcher’s Apron. It’s not football, it’s a visceral rejection of that kind of nationalism.

A people that desperate about their National identity easily slips over into Nationalist Tyranny. As easily as did the Freestaters against their kind. Our kind, maybe.

This I think may be a seminal period in Scottish social history. It may be the last flutterings of an illness that poisons all of our lives. I hope so. It’s ironic that football should be the vehicle.

(Remember, when we all said wait till Rangers try to sing their traditional anthems in the Stadio del Alpi. Or the Stadio Olimpico. We knew, how could they be so thick? They didn’t even have to get to Rome.)

We need a leader, brave enough to stand above the divide. To save us from the flag wavers of any kind. Where is he, or she?

Estadio, is that leader in your book?

"What I make is a great paycheck, but it's not what I deserve - I just want to further my career somewhere else."

Just noticed a wee item in the Herald saying that Harald Brattback is retraining as an airline pilot.

Would you expect a smooth meeting between undercarriage wheels and landing strip if your Captain was anounced as Harald Brattback or...

So the combination of Beattie and Miller win the day for Scotland. Wouldn't have predicted that.

Miller looked decent today in as much as he got his shots on target. Beattie fell down at every opportunity. And Boyd confirmed for me that he is

    a) not a team player
    b) not a footballer

but can't help but think he will make the difference in our qualification as he is able to out the ball in the back of the net. I just don't get it.

How about this from the second reading (Philippians 3.8-14): "I have not yet won, but I am still running, trying to capture the prize. I am far from thinking that I have already won. All I can say is that I forget the past and I strain ahead for what is still to come; I am racing for the finish, for the prize to which God calls us upward."

I just checked my original comment. In retrospect it appears rude. I didn't intend that, and I do apologise. I fired it off quickly without re-reading it.

Broadly speaking, I was thinking of the myth that somehow Scotland was one nation for a long period. In fact, Gaelic Scotland developed in a different manner than that of Lowland Scotland. History presumes/pretends that Scottish kings summoned their loyal Highlanders every time the english became particularly annoying.

In fact it took a long time for the Lands of the Lordship of the Isles to fall within the rule of the Scottish monarchy. Many myths survive in relation to the Campbells and Clan Donald. However, together, and in different ways, they long resisted becoming subjects of a Scottish crown.

Short answer is that you picts are a strange lot....:)

Soccer-Nakamura inspires Japan to 2-0 win over Peru

YOKOHAMA, Japan, March 24 (Reuters) - Celtic's Shunsuke Nakamura inspired Japan to a 2-0 home victory over troubled Peru in the Asian champions' opening match of 2007 on Saturday.

Nakamura whipped in a free kick from the left for striker Seiichiro Maki to head home after 19 minutes in drizzly Yokohama and produced a carbon-copy delivery for Japan's second goal.

Still wearing a bandage after breaking his left hand last month, Nakamura swept the ball into the danger zone for Naohiro Takahara to double Japan's lead nine minutes after the break.

Nakamura's free kick was lethal but Eintracht Frankfurt striker Takahara was given too much space by the Peru defence to turn and smash the ball into the roof of the net.

Japan goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi was underemployed on his 100th international appearance as the home side made a strong start to their preparations for the Asian Cup in July.

Defender Tulio almost made it 3-0 with a powerful header which thumped against the cross bar in the 90th minute as Japan underlined their dominance over a below-strength Peru side.

Japan coach Ivica Osim called up his European-based players for the first time since taking over after last year's World Cup in Germany
"It was a clean trap and a nice feeling to put it away," Takahara told reporters after his 18th goal in 48 games for his country.

"We didn't have much time together before the match but we had some decent moments and it was nice way to start the year."

Julio Cesar Uribe's second spell as Peru coach began two weeks ago amid injury problems and a row between Bayern Munich striker Claudio Pizarro and the federation.

Four players pulled out of Uribe's first squad because of injury while Ukraine-based striker Andres Mendoza was unavailable for the friendly because of visa problems.

Pizarro, banned by the federation in October after missing the second of two friendlies against Chile, was also called up but refused to play.

TMC I was out and about with the other cubs so I listened to the game on Radio Scotland. The riase of Stephen before the game and during the game was very high especially from a certain Willie Miller who knwos a thing or two about defending.

When we lost the goal the commentator tried to place the blame on Stephen. WM put it firmly on Weirs shoulders. Billy Dodds who I think is the most impartial hun on the radio tried to say that Weir thought the ball was going out. WM said thats what wrong with him as a defender you should never assume. He got enough hassle that he had to say Stephen was a bit at fault for turning off as he would have thought his partner would have dealt with the situation easily.

It was clear, he's lack of the games. Only 12 thousand becouse our stadium is small and wait for converson to be national stadium.

    Quiz for everybody.

In the game England:Israel, the were two playerswho could play for Poland. In every team one. One of them asked two years ago to be our player.
The other one was asked to be our player, but he decided to be onother country player.

TMC im taking it you are Scottish I could be worng so anyone else who identifies with the question im going to ask please feel free to answer.

Why do you find it hard to support the country you wee born in. To take what TMC said 'I always try and put the dislike aside' if Boyd signed for us (in this case Celtic) tomorrow he would get my support so when he plays for Scotland he gets my support for the 90 minutes.

I did not want us to sign Steven or Paul from Hearts but now when they put on our strip I support them fully.

I argue with my mates on this all of the time. I have them who support Soctland at Rugby but not at football. Their reason being that the football is full of people against us, my arguement is the rugby probably has more bigots than football.

The only team I would ever want to see beating Scotland at anything is us and in a competitive gane that cant happen. Please remember there were a lot of people walking today to celebrate 300 years of the union we were not.

Ben Sahar's mother is Polish, his father is Polish Jew. If I'm not mistaken they went to Israel when Ben Sahar was 6 years old.
The biggest shame for me is Dawid Sikorski Austrian NT player. I know his father very well. He was my neighbour near Warsaw. Witold Sikorski was Legia player and our NT player. He tried to interests our coaches in his son.It seems without possitive result. I met Dawid and his father two years ago in Vienna. They were dissapointed.
