Strachan press conference, scouts very busy, defeats hit players hard

Knowing that a transfer is never a transfer until you see the player on the field, Gordon Strachan was reluctant to talk about Scott McDonald, “Wait until he is signed up before we talk about him”.

He was less reticent on how the summer plans were progressing, “I don’t think I have ever seen as many scouts working as hard in my 10 or 11 years [as a manager], covering as many areas”.

Tomorrow afternoon’s game against Dundee United takes on greater than usual significance as a result of Celtic losing their last two league games, “We have to be at our best”, was Strachan’s verdict. “We are not scoring goals.

“We played worse against Falkirk earlier in the season and won, we played worse at Ibrox and got a draw [than in our last two games]. We are getting the ball into the box but then nothing.

“In the last three games we could have had eight penalties. People tell me these things even themselves out, if that is the case we will get 15 penalties before the end of the season”.

“The players are looking forward to winning again. I am happy with the way they have dealt with the season as a whole. It’s not as easy being so far ahead as you think it is.

“The players can take defeat so hard that they can miss out on the big picture.”

The injury to Evander Sno is not likely to be as bad as first feared, he could be back in three or four weeks. Mark Wilson and Paul Telfer are both injured and unavailable for tomorrow.

Celtic are looking at the possibility of John Kennedy getting some summer football to sharpen him up for the new campaign.

Great to see the scouts are busy. I love this idea of getting 3/4/5 players lined up for each position. Nothing worse than being held to ransom.

Really big game tomorrow. Fancy Gravesen to be given a license to roam forward and create a bit of havoc as he always does. Better to do it in the opposition box than in ours!

What are the odds on us getting a penalty tomorrow????

truetime, strachan has said this about 3-5 targets per position for a while yet it always seems to come down to the last minute if its so well planned how is this i am bemused by it at times, but maybe it just never becomes public. and signign macdonald may be start of a different trend

with wilson and telfer out, could we finally see doumbe? and naylor back on form after a break

    Paul,

Lets hope the players are genuinely upset by the defeats in the League because we definitley couldnt afford another one -- huge leads in sport are lost because of one or two aqpprently small shifts in balance can change the overall momentum.

I'm actually more nervous about this game than probably any other this season for that reason.

A win and only a win is enough -- as someone else said on here a few days ago maybe Black Sunday still affects us -- it certainly still affects me.

I'd be happy to think I'm the only one who's only one more bad game away from beginning to flap , but I suspect not.

    C'mon the hoops !!

    JVOH is fit.
    Magic scored mid week.
    All are well rested.
Telfer to team up alongside Nakamura.
McGeady full of confidence after his successful game for Ireland.
Pressley and O'Dea rested and raring to go.
Gravesen and Lennon to strangle the midfield.

What's not to like? Four or more.

    'GG just looking in.

I dont think Doumbe is in the provisional squad for tomorrows game. Am I right in saying we will pay a fee for him if he makes first team football?

Good to see Sheridan and Bjarnsson have made the squad.

The big talking point is whether Gravesen and Riordan will be in the squad. I am not so sure here.

I was hoping to watch tomorrow with a large cigar in a rather nonchalant manner - but no - in typical Celtic fashion - its now a must win game!

I think WGS might play Hartley at right back if Wilson(again!) and Telfer are unfit.

    Boruc
    Hartley
    Pressley
    McManus
    Naylor
    Naka
    Lennon
    Graveson
    McGeady
    Majic

    1) A post designed to (yet again) scare the support into believing that we haven't already been taken over by a businessman intent on making a profit.

    2) Another attempt to distract us with a "I hate the media" story

    3) A good post on the need for Celtic to concentrate on Saturday.

Surprisingly no post on what it means to be a supporter or customer!

    Hi all,

    Just a quick Friday visit.

I've watched just about every one of JFK's comeback games and at times he has been impressive beyond expectations.

On his intial 15 mins against Motherwell just prior to the Benfica away match, he was clearly ring rusty and a bit off the pace. As he progressed his speed of thought, passing, adventure and physique sharpened, hardened and became even more encouraging.

His devasrtating injury is I believe a thing of the past now and he is returning to near his best.

If you go along you will see a real physical athlete strutting his stuff at the heart of the Reserve defence.

However, there always is one isn't there.

Against Ayr's virtual first team at end of Jan, he played alongside Scott Cuthbert (who if anyone remembers I didn't correctly identify on the night - mea culpa).

SC had an outstanding game and demonstrated a turn of speed, eye for anticipation, and all round agility and flexibility that made him the star of the evening.

I hope and pray that I am wrong in my judgement (not an unusual occurence) but I think that JFK may be going out to either make or break him as a Celtic player of a new breed, and while I am convinced that he will make it in football, I am not so sure that it will be with Celtic.

Darren and Scott are in the vanguard of that young new type of centre back. They not only anticipate and break up attacks, but have the inate skills to compose themselves, look up and start counter attacks.

They are first of all footballers, secondly athletes. and thirdly specifically defenders.

John, while in no way a throwback is a more traditional stopper and while he can and does break forward, he doesn't recover as quickly as some of the newer lads.

I firmly believe that JFK would have been of the same ilk, but I sadly think that the three years out following the assault by Ganea while not diminishing his abilities, has meant that his football education has been frozen.

This may be too much of a hurdle for him to overcome.

    Please prove me wrong John.

    hail hail

Wee bit late again but here goes:

Davie White was procured from Clyde where he had been a player and then manager for the 1966/7 season, he led Clyde to the semis of the Scottish Cup where they went out to Celtic after a replay, starring for the Bully Wee that day was Harry Hood who’s performance over both games probably secured a transfer to the Bhoys a couple of seasons later much to the disdain of a huge portion of the Celtic support as Harry Harry had turned the leather belts down a few seasons earlier for unfashionable Sunderland. The MOTM for both games though was Wispy playing at right half for the injured Chopper.

Clyde also finished third in the League that season but were refused entry to the Fairs Cities Cup the predecessor to the UEFA Cup due to the one club per city rule; rankers who finished second, were given Glasgow's place although the Bully Wee tried in vain to claim they weren’t really from Glasgow but Rutherglen.

In an attempt to emulate the track suit manager which was becoming the vogue in football Davie was appointed assistant manager at Govan and within weeks was given the top job as scot symon the most successful manager in Scotland at that time was given his jotters while his club was sitting at the top of the League.

As we all know his reign was generally unsuccessful and he was the only hun manager not to win any major honours until the recent Opus Dei agent, culminating in his removal in 1969 after the fans started chanting “He’s White, he’s White, he’s a loada f****n’Raphael, Davie White“

He later went on to manage a very good Dundee team which took Celtic to extra time in a Scottish Cup semi replay at Hampden where only a wonder save in the dying minutes of normal time of the replay by Ally Hunter from a Doug Houston thunderbolt destined for the top right hand corner of the net saved the day for Celts who triumphed 3-0 in the extra period.

However, later that year he guided them to League Cup triumph with a Tommy Gemmell skippered side against the team who had caused him so many problems at ibrox. He left Dens Park a couple of seasons later after they had been relegated and he failed to bring them back up right away.

One interesting footnote is that while at Dens Park he was still a shareholder at ibrox which caused more than a few questions to be asked which fell on deaf ears, seemingly it's customary or was at that time for darnel managers to be issued shares.

A nice man who unfortunately had a voice that would not have been out of place singing for the Bee Gees, must have been gelded as a wean.

Ralph Brand, my Henke has there ever been a thorn in the Celtic side, he was likened tae Jimmy Greaves but in reality it would be a poor man’s version.

He had a remarkable scoring record 3rd top post war goal scorer behind the cheeky chappie and the pie man. He left suddenly as far as I can recall around the same time as Slim Jim, which was just after we had won our first trophy in eight years on the arrival of the Big Mhan, and shortly after he slaughtered his former club through the Sunday tabloids claiming they were miserable and penny pinching in comparison to the wages he was now earning at Maine Road, the club chairman and well known house builder John Lawrence replied that a hun’s bonus was enough to buy a new car to which Ralphie responded it widnae even buy you a bike or words tae that effect.

He does seem to have vanished from the follow follow memories but I’m almost certain he had a son on the club’s books at one time.

Man And Bhoy has sold 29,500 copies since August, with 7500 advance orders for the paperback version, due to be released in May.

Lennon, 35, is delighted with the sales of the book.

He said: "I wanted to write it while I was still playing and while events were fresh in my mind.

"I'm delighted so many people thought the book was good enough to part with their hard-earned cash."

Lennon, from Northern Ireland, was praised for his openness by mental health charities after revealing in the book he suffered from depression.

*it was a shock at the time but it was also just after the arrival of davie white and rumours at the time hinted that he was to be moved upstairs in a Jimmy McGrory type of fashion as GM to allow the younger manager to run team affairs, he was part of a dying breed of the three piece suit managers who never got involved in training etc, he refused hence the sugar lump.

Shortly after he was given the Harry Wragg's job in what was seen as a "job for the boys" and later on became a director at Boghead, then again so did Sean Fallon.

    Afternoon/evening to Paul and CQN

I got back from Bari today and I can't believe some of the coverage I have read on the web.

Hartley and Ferguson were a disaster and gave the ball away. Ferguson has no running power and needed Brown to cover for him. That he was given man of the match....I am actually disgusted by that. He was poor, the whole side was poor but the shining lights were the confidence of Brown and Maloney.

The Italians are generally a class act but their supporters are not nice people. Really poor support from them and no sense of elegance as winners. Keep yer corrupt calcio and parliament and police force.

On a brighter note, your cafe owners and bus drivers are proper men. I salute them.

    #8

p.s. If the dark side sign Lee McCulloch then I will donate £50 to a charity of Paul's choice. He is an awful player and a complete throwback.

    Kojo,

My good friend remembers Mathie as a good fast inside forward.

He is not able, as ,to put any more meat on his bones but promises me that he will find out more about him.

He asked me who wanted this information and when I replied Kojo he looked at me as if I had taken leave of you know what.

However he told me to pass on his good wishes.

    Scott Symon,

Two people paid the ultimate price for the Berwick Rangers Fiasco in 1967.

The first was the centre forward Jim Forrest who never played another game for Rangers, and the second was the Manager Scott Symon.

My reading of his situation was that if Berwick had not of happened the manager would have remained in his position.

As Tontine says he was the last of a dying breed of gentlemen managers.

I cannot ever remember seeing a picture of Scott Symon dressed in anything but a three piece suit and a Black soft hat.

He looked not unlike an old time undertaker.

I was glad when he left Rangers.

Even though the tables had been turned with the arrival of Jock Stien, Scott Symon had caused Celtic such misery over many years that I was fearful of him and his reputation.

    MON THE HOOPS TOMORROW,

LET US PUT DUNDEE UNITED AND THE REST OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE TO THE SWORD.

    Martin.

err no actually - it means that the supporters association will ask other rangers fans associations to ask their members to stop singing the wrong songs......... the minty meeja give the positive spin first.... ask for the detail later

In reality they don't believe this type of behaviour is wrong but are only doing what need's must to keep UEFA off their back.

What have Rangers fans got in common with smokers and Civil Servants?

Who cares? I hear you ask, and a good question too.

I’m going to tell you anyway, because I think it’s instructional.

When I grew up in the sixties, it was not only acceptable, it was glamorous, to be a smoker. Look at the adverts. James Bond smoked, for goodness sake, and look at how suave debonair and successful with women he was. (I was not a smoker).

When I grew up in the sixties the Civil Service was a good, respectable career. And James Bond was a civil servant. (I was a Civil Servant. Should have been a smoker).

When I grew up in the sixties, Rangers supporters exalted an organisation which practised institutionalised apartheid against a minority of their fellow citizens. This was not only respectable, it was celebrated weekly in song and dance, (well song anyway, the bouncy dance bit was a later post modern innovation). And Rangers were revered in Scotland as the establishment club. (I was disqualified from playing for Rangers.Good. I'd rather smoke.)

But then it all went wrong.

The medical community and the health facists sorry philanthropists decided that smoking was not just bad for you, it was morally wrong because it damaged the health of others as well. So the poor smokers not only had to adjust to dealing with his or her addiction, they had to do it facing the full brunt of social disapproval. Poor souls.

Economics, business and the government decided that having a large publicly funded civil service was not only unaffordable, it was wrong because it wasted public funds which could be used in other much more constructive ways like reducing taxes or helping private business . So all those mollycoddled public sector parasites with the fat retirement plans had to adjust to the fact that their job was no longer respectable and it was time to enter the real world of efficient and effective private sectordom. And they had to do that in the face of some public scorn. Pour souls.

Graeme Souness decided that, if Jimmy Johnstone was out there he wanted to be able to sign him. Sadly for Graeme, he had to settle for a different Johnston but it still made sense. And to be fair to Graeme, I’d like to believe the conviction was as much moral as pragmatic. So Rangers supporters had to adjust to the new reality, that sectarianism was no longer acceptable, it was morally wrong because…..No, wait a minute, they didn’t have to, did they? They were allowed to carry on with their traditions, weren’t they? Until…..

UEFA, to the eternal shame of the Scottish Football establishment, had to tell them to stop it. So now it’s morally wrong. But wait, no it’s not. It’s just that it might damage Rangers if they carry on singing these songs. So what actually happened in Pamplona is minor in comparison with the fact that one of their own put a video of it in the public domain. It’s OK to do it lads, just don’t publicise it?

Ok, the answer to the question I started with is, “Nothing in common whatsoever.”.

    It’s the difference that’s important.

It’s now accepted that smoking didn’t become wrong, it was always wrong. It’s kind of accepted that it was wrong to let the Civil Service grow to the size it reached and to protect it from market forces.

But no one at Rangers, the SFA, or any relevant part of the Scottish establishment as far as I am aware, has ever acknowledged that their anti-Catholic apartheid was wrong in the first place.

    And therein lies the problem.

While that remains the case, the traditionalists can maintain their stance of defiance against a club that they perceive as just bowing to the politically correct beaurocrats of Brussels.

Any debate about who has had the more arrests, who has committed more atrocities on the road, is secondary to the fundamental acceptance by the Scottish establishment of the institutionalised sectarianism practiced for the best part of a century by The Rangers Football Club.

The cry is indeed No Surrender.

An apology, Mr Murray. Isolate the bigots forever. If it’s such a small minority, what are you afraid of?

Dharma, a wee Civil Servant joke I found....

Four men were bragging about how smart their cats were. The first man was an Engineer, the second man was an Accountant, the third man was a Chemist and the fourth man was a Civil Servant.

The Engineer called his cat, "T-square, do your stuff." T-square pranced over to the desk, took out some paper and pen and promptly drew a circle, a square, and a triangle. Everyone agreed that was pretty smart.

The accountant called his cat and said, "Spreadsheet, do your stuff." Spreadsheet went out to the kitchen and returned with a dozen cookies. He divided them into 4 equal piles of 3 cookies.
    Everyone agreed that was good.

The Chemist called his cat and said, "Measure, do your stuff."
Measure got up, walked to the fridge, took out a pint of milk, got a 10 ounce glass from the cupboard and poured exactly 8 ounces into the glass without spilling a drop. Everyone agreed that was really good too.

Then the three men turned to the Civil Servant and said, "What can your cat do?" The Civil Servant called his cat and said,

"Coffee Break,do your stuff." Coffee Break jumped to his feet,

Ate the cookies, Drank the milk, Peed on the paper, Scr**ed the other three cats, Claimed he injured his back while doing so, Submitted a grievance report for unsafe working conditions, Put in a claim for compensation, and went home for the rest of the month on sick leave.

    chennaiseabird,

That made me laugh! I do have to admit that as a civil servant, I work in premises leased from a private organisation. There's probably a trade off in that although we have a carpet, we don't always have hot drinking water. Nor can we put Christmas decorations on the walls. On the PCs, sorry workstations, yes but walls, no.

    Anyway, I 'd rather have a cleaner.

    I agree about the Mill.

They set themselves up last week. And I won't accept any of this post modernist avante garde surreal verite arty farty stuff.

This is real life, people's emotions and cravings they're dealing with. They built up an expectation last week, how dare they let us down?

Who do they think they are, a football team?

Ehhr..maybe it is art after all.

Good idea. I just wanted to know if there was someone else who liked the Triffids. It's a bit of a novelty conversing with someone who has played in bands I like.

    chennaiseabird ,

Nor is there going to be! It would detract from the videos!

Sorry to post these so late but this is the first chance I've had to log on today.

    Today's Times has two excellent football articles - not directly connected to Celtic but should give us food for thought nevertheless;

England fans abuse of Steve McClaren

    The downfall of Leeds Utd.

    Zbyszek,
If you are still on- just to let you know, as a 10 year old football player growing up in Central Scotland, Lubanski was my idol. A fantastic player who I believe would have gone on to be one of the "greats" had his career not been cut short.
Curly, How are you doing? Any thoughts on the CQN NE Chapter golf day?

Ah fond memories ... Rankers v Gornik Zabreze (circa 1969). Out of a sense of mischief ( which I now recognise as being more like bigotry,) I attended that game with a like minded mate. We were 18 at the time and sensed that TFOD were going to get humped. We had seen the 1st game on the telly. My mate's gran lived in Copeland Road and we visited her before the game. We entered Ipox via that end of the ground and walked through the North terracing (now Govan Stand) and into the Celtic end. We settled down quietly to watch the drama unfold and were befriended by two Ulstermen - Sam and Willie- I kid you not, who insisted that we share their carry out. We were a bit uncomfortable with this but discretion was the better part of valour. In the 7th minute Slim Jim who had recently returned from Sunderland scored for Rankers but Gornik then proceeded to administer a football lesson and scored 3. Lubanski was outstanding. One of the performances which I'll never forget. It was hard to suppress the laughter especially after one of our NI friends said that the Catholics will be celebrating tonight and we assured them that they certainly would. Towards the end the Rankers supporters were chanting for Gornik and calling down the wrath of the godds on Davie White.

As a footnote, in the next days Daily Express columnist Willie Waddell wrote an article entitled "The Boy David" in which he began "If I were Rangers manager..." He then proceede to write his contract and was appointed as manager the very next day.

I'm now older and wiser and a bit ashamed of my behaviour - it's the sort of thing Huns do but it was a night I'll never forget.

Today 12.30 at Tannidice celtic must -

    - not play Hartley at right wing back

    - come out the traps early and dominate

    - score early

    - not allow themselves to be bullied

    - score muchos more goals

    - secure 3 points

    Thank you.

I would like to see Hartley and Geavesen in the centre of midfield.

JVOH and Zurawski up front please.

    Will we ever see Doumbe?

Would be nice to win and play well but any win will do now.

Get the points on the board and leave family club Rangers to need a win to stay where they are now.

Shocking behaviour there by SadiesBhoy. The sort of thing that gets the rest of us a bad name.

He could at least have offered to pay for his share of the carryout.

I was at Ibrox for the first league match of Souness's first full season. Dundee United it was, as it happens.

Rangers dominated for an hour. Played some great football, Ferguson (Derek) and Durrant outstanding, 2-0 up and strolling with an hour to go. Dundee United won 3-2. What fun.

Apologies all for the posting problems yesterday/last night.

Hugh, I remember that day when Dundee United beat Rangers at Ibrox, though I think it was four or five games into the season. Rangers first game that season was at Easter Road, when Souness was sent off for kicking George McCluskey.

Anyway, back to the day in question; we were at Kilbowie and I had a portable radio with me, not one of your personal stereos, a wireless with batteries, which was quiet a novelty back then.

The stadium announcer let everyone know that Rangers were winning 2-0 at half time, but I had the honour of announcing the United goals as they came in.

The Celtic game had finished, with the score still 2-2 at Ibrox, we were just outside the stadium when Kevin Gallagher scored the third when Paul67 announced his first scoop!

    Simple pleasures.
