Celtic PLC shares double in price since July

Despite rumours that it only knew the way down (some of which I might have been responsible for), the Celtic PLC share price has continued its recovery today, briefly touching a 52 week high; more than twice the value it was trading at when the season started in July.

Exactly why the price is so strong is unclear. Though the club are about to win their domestic league again, supporter sentiment is unlikely to be behind the recent surge, as the league title has been factored into expectations for many months.

European income for next season cannot be estimated with any certainty until late August, when Celtic will have played Champions League qualifying games, unlike the situation in July 2006, when the club knew they could count on Champions League income.

I think it is unlikely that Celtic are being stalked as a potential takeover target, as any suitor would have to deal directly with Dermot Desmond. It is more likely that speculative investors have bought into the club hoping for a return, or that a small number of wealthy fans have decided to increase their holding.

We are going to have an opportunity to wallow in a ‘summer of Lisbon’ this year, with the ‘Leões De Lisboa’ banquet next month, a new, sure-to-be-linked home shirt, together with a raft of merchandise coming your way soon.

My email arrived from Celtic yesterday announcing the new catalogue dedicated to the events of 1967. It made me wonder how much money Celtic have made out of that game over the years, though I suspect income at the time was limited to a couple of big gate receipts.

I have no recollection of Lisbon related merchandise until the Lions got themselves organised in the 1990s, but you could be forgiven for thinking Celtic now have a trademark on the number 67, added to their earlier acquired 1888.

Perhaps if we had done it again in 1970, 67 would not have the same meaning to us today, it would simply be one of our years. I know of no other football club who are defined by such a pivotal year.

Let's hope Celtic make a commercial success of the merchandise, when we are competing with so many rich neighbours in England every income stream counts.

You can be sure that 40 years after Rangers win the European Cup they will do the same. How long would you need to live before you will endure that day?

You are likey to have bought your shares at around £2.60 per share. The current 54.75 is pence unfortunately.

You'd get about £125 back for your initial £600 in.

It is all because of amortisation.

I've got no gripe with people like yourself, for whatever reason can't get to away games. My gripe is that, Celtic Never fill out there allocation for Rugby Park, but now we have a scramble for ticket's because we clinch the league on Sunday. I'm not for 1 second suggesting that, if you don't go to them all you cant go to any, but the only time Celtic fill out Rugby Park Is when the title can be won.

Apart from away games against Rangers, Falkirk, Inverness & Aberdeen, Celtic don't fill there allocation for any the others, there seems to be a bit of a myth that you cant get ticket's! Has anyone ever tried???

I hope there is no mysterious takeover bid in the offing, this was part of the Fergus legacy that he did not want one person to have outright control of the club.
Dont know if anyone heard Hugh Keevins last night he claimed that there was fighting in the North Stand of Hampden on Saturday due to the substitution of Derek Riordan, he was told by a family friend at the game, this was challenged by a couple of callers who told him this was rubbish.Anyone see or witness this event, if it existed?

I was in the south Stand as well, and the only disturbance was at half time when the bloke serving my mate Paul's poke o' chips (one at a time into the poke while chatting up the comely Polish cash register attendant) nearly made us miss the winning goal.

The chips have now been surgically removed from said caterer's orifice, although it may take a bit longer to retrieve the vinegar bottle, knife, fork, cuddly toy and sliding doors.

Re the North Stand, according to many acquaintances who were present there were undoubtedly 'full and frank exchanges of views.

No trouble arose, no police or stewards were inconvenienced, and everyone had their chips.

Police were in the stand to remove some young fellows near the "Green Brigade" section but that was first half. Other events near me was a guy collapsed due to epeleptic seizure and was attended to for a long while during the 2nd half by police and Paramedics (hope the guy was OK). I didnt see any fighting or large steward activity other than these too incidents.

The booing took me absolutely by suprise. The worst offenders seemed to be the main stand facing the dug-out.

the figures are for the 2005-2006 season. our debt is considerably lower than that now.

I looked for a date on the page and couldn't find one. That answers a lot of my questions. I can relax again...

and what going on with newcastle's debt? is freddy shepherd the new peter ridsdale?

That sort of guy scares me. It strikes me that people like that just don't understand the huge cultural significance of the football clubs they are playing fast and loose with.

Anyway, thanks for the info! :-)

Or shout abuse at Neil Lennon without having to worry if he heard you or not.

Or turn the air conditioning up if it gets too warm. Or off if it gets a bit cool.

Don't be too concerned about the lack of 'Gold Standard' away tickets.

I go to just about every game, and though I have been fortunate with South Side Glasgow and Aberdeen tickets, over the years I have only ever been offered 1 Hibs ticket, 1 Nessie ticket, and 1 Falkirk ticket.

I have never had a direct offer for Hearts.

Fortunately I have friends who run one of the larger CSCs across the water and can usually get a couple of away tickets since they usually have people who can't get across for any particular game.

As for abroad, I travelled until Milan with Thomas Crook and was allocated accordingly.

For Milan, I purchased as did thousands of others from one of the banks.

I am a normal season ticket holder, registered on the away scheme in a group of four. But I am way down the pecking order after investors, padded seats, CSCs, those with dirt on the board, and people with mates in the Ticket Office!

    Paul / CaltonTongues

Thanks for the clarification. I have realised my error. The original shares would have equated to 62p now right enough. I was unemployed, doing 10p luck fifteens and watching Countdown daily with my mate in 1995. (With a bottle of Buckie on the days when 2 or more of said luck 15 stoated)

I bought my shares when Fergus sold up, and they equated to £2.80 in today's terms. So, CaltonTongues, if you bought them WITH Fergus in the initital tranche you've nearly recoverd your money. If you bought them FROM him 5 years later (after joining the rate race and having a credit history to take out the Co-op loan to buy them, I blame the wife, for almost everything as it happens) then you are still a long way short of your initial purchace price.

As for the North Stand, I shouted a long verbal volley of abuse at a guy who was booing Kenny Miller. Nothing to do with Riordan, he was without question taking the opportunity to boo Kenny Miller, that's not up for debate. Maybe I'm the cause of the disturbance?

  • At 17/04/07 15:29, bambi said…

    Hello all,

Haven't been able to post so this might be a few days late.

The booing started on Saturday as soon as it was recognised Derek was the one going off. It died down a little after he left the field only to get a little louder when the announcer said Kenny Miller's name, absolutely no doubt that some, not all, were booing the arrival of Kenny.

Another couple of things struck me on Saturday, the first at 2-1 up when Artur caught a corner and held the ball to allow our players upfield, a "fan" behind me stood up and started to scream "Boruc ya f***ing posing b*****d, get the baw up the pitch" to who I don't know as we had no one upfield at that point. The second was when Aiden tried to run the ball up the pitch and made the cardinal error of having a poor touch and allowing the ball to roll over the line, this guy stood up and screamed a torrent of abuse at Aiden with a face filled with the sort of hate usually reserved for a darnelist.

I have never before been embarrassed to be a Celtic supporter but I was on Saturday.

When it comes down it you will struggle to find another comment that carries as much authority; not just is Rino a world class player playing for a world class team managed by a world class but he also came up against us. I've heard a few comments from Ac Milan talking about how difficult the match was against us and that's great praise for our manager and our players. I'm sure if you asked them they will say that the games against us were more difficult than the games against Byern Munich which is even more praise.

But no previous embarrassment will come close to how I feel if we drive away our trophically proportionally statistically most successful manager ever. Well, OK, second most if you accept that the big one wipes away all other losses.

And we might, and no one will tell me that it's not through prejudice.

    Chennai,

Spot on mate, I'm not embarrassed to be one but....

Don't get me wrong, we have all at one time or another shouted etc at Celtic players but there does seem to be a real bitterness towards some of our players and the management.

I don't expect us all to agree with every decision that is made but to boo our own and for us to show real anger towards our own is something new and it's not something I would expect from Celtic supporters.

Bambi, football clubs observe a rule, as Neil Lennon indicated earlier this month, that they fans have a right to their opinion. Of course they do, but, as you allude to, this is not a license to hurl personal abuse at Celtic players like Neil or Aiden for losing a game or mis-controlling a ball.

Clubs are very reluctant to open their mouths on this, as the fans pay their wages and bills, and an ill-chosen comment can and would be taken out of context and used against them, but it is only a matter of time before it blows up in their face.

Any other employer who asked their staff to endure personal abuse during their work would have their lawyers busy in no time. Football allows an ‘abuser’ to indulge in his or her vice, but it is only a matter of time before a player makes a stand.

My advice, keep talking about it, you might encourage someone to consider their actions.

We cannot be complacent with our good reputation.

Was driving late last night and listening to Radio Scotland around 20:30. That very annoying man (almost as annoying as my namesake but no one is quite as bad as that)
Bill leekie started a discussion between fellow hacks about our own NL throwing a water bottle at a Celtic Fan. He was corrected by another non-entity hack that NL had thrown the bottle into an empty dug out ( I but the fan was somewhere behind it ). He went on to repeat that NL had thrown a bottle at a Celtic Fan.

It must be quite frightening for football players that a man *cough* like Leckie can get away with shouting such rediculous accusations at them with absolutely no foundations because it can easily affect their careers and their personal lives.

Thankfully most right minded individuals will ignore what Leckie said but i'm sure there were quite a few who would have believed him and they will now unjustly have a disliking for Lennon and want him out the club, possibly even result in him getting abused in the street . I know it will never reach that stage but it must be frightening for a footballer who's reputation is in such a fragile position because an idiot such as Leckie can tarnish their reputation so easily by spreading a pack of lies. The sad thing is that the Keevins and the Leckie's of this world never have to justify themselves when they get it so wrong all so often.

WG, we used to have a copy of The Celtic Song which I always assumed was sung by the players (although now I'm not so sure). Slattery's Mounted Fut was on the B-side & the label looked like one of those old panelled leather footballs

*WG don't know the song you referred to earlier. DB the team did sing on that song led by Frank Haffey who's party piece believe it or not was "You Need Hands".

I had one called the "Celtic Chorus" (I think) by Calum Kennedy, it started with a fabricated radio broadcast, it was fabricated because it mentioned players who couldnae have played in the same team, and that led intae "they come fae Crieff and Kilmacolm, they come fae Derry and Tyrone......." finishing up with "shades of Johnny Thomson's name, Divers and McGrory".

I also had Bartholomew Dick singing (under his nom-de-plume) "Hail Glorious St. Patrick" backed by "Faith of our Fathers" and an e.p. where he sung "Sean South".

However, my pride and joy was "Irish Songs Country Style" by Hank Locklin, he did a mean version of the "Forty Shades of Green".

I'm away home to try and get that parlez vouz song out of my head!

The performance of some of our support on Saturday was a disgrace and will provide a permanent stick with which to beat us for the forseeable future.

This reaction to the manager and players is words made flesh of the increasingly vindictive comments posted on here.

There are many Celtic supporters who have their own agendas and don't actually like the club.

For some, they don't like the PLC model. Others resent anyone, other than themselves, of course, who have wealth. Then we have the traditionalists, who operate a two tier system. To them you have to be Irish and Catholic to be a REAL Celtic supporter.

If you add all these groups together, you will have a sizeable grouping of fans who will never have too far to look for an excuse to attack the club or it's staff.

Bob Kelly's message to people who verbally abused his Kids was " stay away". Still sounds like good advice today.

Barcelona have been very clever with the UNICEF branding on their strip, I'm not sure we are quite at the stage that the Carling revenue stream can be ignored.

A quick look at Camp Nou and the Barca website may also remove the misty eyes when dealing with what is a hugely successful money making machine as well as mes que un club - plastered, as it is with such brands as Nike, Coca Cola and Estrella Damm. Not that different from Celtic after all, I'm all for sponsorless, numberless Hoops.

Evening, Paul i was just wondering, since the double up on the share price since last July, what sort of amount of money invested in shares would cause the hike over this period ?

It might be a bit of a daft question but how many shares are there ? I take it if someone's buying then somebody has to be selling and i was just curious what sort of amounts over that period are we talking about.

Jamie, Celtic is more than a club, and this is a Celtic web site, remember that when you use language like you have tonight. Comment deleted.

As for protesting so strongly against a Celtic strip with unbroken green and white hoops with a '67' style white neck, I cannot imagine what you would prefer the strip to look like.

Ardri, the sale of one share is technically enough to double the price. Most Celtic shares will never change hands, for example, yours, mine, most CQN readers and even DD’s, so a small percentage will determine the price.

Thismancraig, you are correct, La Porta was wise with his unicef deal. He had to change the Barca constitution to get a name on the strip, so he got agreement if he ‘donated’ the position to unicef.

He can sell the space next time around. Sports media analysts have also said that having unicef as a ‘sponsor’ has made other commercial rights more valuable for them.

They might be more than just a club, but they are working their revenue streams just as well as everyone else, maybe even better.

    Tom the Tim @ 17.57,

I don't entirely agree with the categories you enumerate but totally agree with your condemnation of those who were booing on Saturday. An utter disgrace. I would guess that it was roughly the same people who booed the great Fergus (another deeply shaming day in our history). Can't remember Sir Bob making that statement; was it after the mob invaded the Ibrox pitch, when we were losing to St Mirren in the semi-final (yet another bad day I was present at)in 1960?

By the way, my auld Dad was sickened by the booing. It should never happen, is his take on it.

We will be well rid of such a support.

When Henrick was booed (Bobo's gauna get you), I thought that was a bit of a joke, which I joined in; my recollection is that the support started singing "We are Celtic supporters" in great voice, as he entered the pitch.

As Martin says, STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS AND THE SCOTTISH CUP FINALISTS. We shall not be moved.

recently we have seen celtic speak out about newspaper articles firmly denying or rebuffing articles. As great as it would be if they done this everytime it means when they got it right, that rare time, then the nil response would give everything away which could weaken our position on that specific thing. I would however like to see the likes of keevins publically have their lies assasinated. perhaps in a press conference say, "so hugh what about your exclusive stan petrov would not sign a new deal" and shame him

Yes they did very well without Wdowczyk. Two wins, six shot goals, zero lost.
Saganowski doesn't want to go back from Southampton to Troyes in France. He was bought to the club by the previous couch and did not have any chance from the new one. I know that Watford want to buy him for 1 million pounds. I'm not joking. He has that, what the players must have to play for a club like Celtic. People over here call it man's treasure. Dziekanowski ( Beenhaker's assistant) said, that Saganowski will get from them a chance to play for a National Team.
