    Jimmy and Willie McStay;
    Hugh and Frank O'Donnell;
Paul and Willie McStay, Raymond never played for the 1st team.

Ian and Bobby Young were at the club together in the early 60's although I'm unsure if Bobby ever played in the 1st team.

I suppose you could describe it as a "nice" game, in a kind of end of season, we've won the league, party day, sort of way.

Good debut for Doumbe. He looks strong and can play a good forward ball.

Jiri playing well in an involved deeper midfield role. Aiden trying hard and obviously encouraged to shoot on sight.

For a bit more drive, Gordon may consider TG for Hartley, who hasn't even got to the pace of a slow game.

The crowd in good, tolerant form, thank goodness. we will probably try and step it up in the second half.

    HT Celtic 0-0 Hearts

Decent performance. Our chances have mostly been shots from the edge of the box. Little creativity shown when moving forward.

Doumbe has done ok. Jiri also playing well. Aiden involved in most of the play.

    The game needs a goal.

We really are complete rubbish, and I've been saying it since December. Winnning the league tries to hide the fact, but if you've even a quarter of a brain you'll be able to see past that misleading fact. We have a crucial Champions League qualifier to play in little over 3 months time. We have little chance of winning it.

A performance/result like this might have been acceptable had we been firing on all cylinders for the last several weeks and taken our foot off the pedal for a well earned rest, but it's yet another in a very long sequence of deplorable peformances showing us up for what we are - the best of a really bad bunch, and I'm not even sure of that anymore.

Sitting here in the sunshine bathed Salford, happy and angry at the same time. The Celtic website promised that you could watch the lifting of the trophy. No me.

According to my mate, Dougal, whom my mate used to rate, had an awful game. He allowed umpteen over the ball challenges by Hearts players in the first 15 minutes and denied us another stonewaller in the first half before giving them the softest penalty he's ever seen. He doesn't know why it was given. Well, how often has that happened?

He says Lubo was given a magnificent reception. He has given us a lot of wonderful memories.

  • At 29/04/07 16:52, Bryce Curdy said…

    Kano, I take no pleasure.

I realise as well as you that we can not perform as worldbeaters every week. I can accept that from time to time we will not play well. I start to worry, however, (as should you) when the poor performances are the norm and the decent performances are the exception. That has been the case for several months.

I am as pleased as you about winning the league this year, but unlike you, I (in my opinion) are far more concerned with our prospects for next season and beyond, and (in my opinion) based on the last half-season or so they don't look good.

We face a huge 3rd round Champions League qualifier in the near future - are you confident we're going to win it?

  • At 29/04/07 17:04, fatherandbhoy said…

Celtic fans never cease to amaze me. We lose a meaningless end of season fixture, we do not even know what the team will be next year, but hey, we are worried about the champions league qualifier. Me, I will celebrate being champions and let Mr Strachan worry about next season. Bring on the Pars on 26 May.

Not gonna spoil the day, shall give Strachan another year before I decide.

Peter Lawwell gets my player of the year. First time in my Celtic supporting career I have been happier with the boards performance than the teams!

The team at present is extremely poor. Strachan has a big task ahead. I just have a feeling we missed a trick letting Roy the Bhoy leave CP.

The job he has done at Sunderland is amazing and living in the NE of England I have no doubt of his ability.

Would he come if offered?..... I doubt it now, he is very loyal and I expect him to stay. Untill Fergie goes at least.

Thought the celebrations were tame. We need some big personalities to knit this team together..

Not Lennons biggest fhan but am surprissed at how sad i feel about him leaving. Time waits for no man.

I have a feeling in my stomach that GS is not the long term answer. Nothing against him personally but dont want to waste the new kitty. Idont see him being around quite s oon. Anyone else feel the same?

    Bryce Curdy,

At the turn of the year I criticised your posts because I thought you were being unduly negative about the team.

In the time since I have come to agree with you. Please accept my apologies.

Thank goodness the league is won, because we seem to lack any spark or guile to get results between now and the end of the season. Major, major, surgery required before next year's CL.

However, our finances are in good shape, hopefully we will have the spending power to overhaul this team.

I think, having knocked off the Champions League group stage for the first time in the club's history, he will now be the manager for some time to come. And I'm pretty happy with that, I have to say.

However, I have a suspicion that we may not see the amount of spending that we would be hoping for. I want to see him given a proper warchest to mount a European challenge, and from various sources I'm getting the impression that this may not be the case. Just back from the game very muted celebrations guess we were deflated with yet another rank rotten performance from a very poor team.

I am celebrating the league win as despite being the best of a bad bunch we are over the piece the most consistent team in scotland.

We will build for next year and i hope strachans comments pre match on the bbc are a wind up we need at least eight players to make a good team.

    Pressley
    Hartley
    Jarosik
    Tommy G (sadly)
    Lennon
    Miller
    Beatie
    Zuraski

will have to be replaced. Some will bring in decent money this must be spent wisley

The rest of scottish football can't be this rank for ever.

Whilst i hate hearts they did deserve to win today as they out fought and out thought a very very poor celtic team.

I think you are wrong again Gweedorebhoy-

if Brother Dougal hadn't stepped in
to carry on his own personal vindictive crusade against Celtic-

it may well have been a different outcome.

The team has to be prepared for the cup final. It`s up to our manager, I`m sure he`ll have the team ready.
To keep it in perspective, two years ago the team lost to Hibs 3-1 in the 35th match. Now that was a sore one!

Brother Dougal was a disgrace. It was never a penalty .

    Howevva!

They still scored another two goal's.

Some posters on here ,were saying that we should not post critical comments ,whilst we had important matches still to win.

    I agreed.

Now some are saying the time isn't right to post, because we have just won the league.

This Celtic side is in need of major upgrading to qualify for the Champions League.

    I predicted Artmedia.I was correct.

I predicted abject failure in this seasons group stages.I was very very wrong.

If this current Celtic side (minus Neil Lennon) has to play a decent side in a CL qualifier ,then we will not qualify.

Mr Strachan has to get his signing's correct in the summer.

Right now i would settle for a draw at Ibrox.

I somehow think that a win will be way beyond us.

Sadly hearts were only crap in one.

I detest hearts mostly because of the bnp but wake up call required in no way did we outplay hearts today and yes it was never a penalty but without it hearts would still have humped us.

Yes it was a dead rubber as they say but this has been happening for weeks

We are frankly not a very good team.

The best team in scotland yes but a team with flaws, thank god its dunfermiline for the cup as we would not beat hibs and before i get happy clapped to death no happy clapper is getting their hands on my ticket.

Hearts had something to play for, we didn't, and it showed.

Kilmarnock against Aberdeen looked nothing like the Kilmarnock we faced to win when it mattered.

It's tough at the tail end of a long season, even when you have got everything to play for.

PSV are champions in the Netherlands, when Ajax and AZ Alkmaar both looked to have a considerable advantage going into today's games. AZ and Ajax blew it. AZ conceded a penalty and a man early in the game, but are a quality team and must be disappointed they didn't come back against Excelsior, especially when they too got a man sent off.

Werder Bremen took a hiding against Espanyol in the UEFA Cup semi final on Thursday, but had everything to play for against Arminia Bielefeld this afternoon. A win would have taken Werder top with three games to go. They blew it, they conceded a late goal to lose 3-2. They, too, are a quality team.

That's football. We won enough games that mattered. To complain now about losing games that don't matter is poor form.

Today Celtic supporters all over the world should be rejoicing in the aftermath of another league championship presentation. Why are many of us, myself included, not satisfied?

It is difficult to get a real sense of the occasion watching on C67. The crowd always sound quiet maybe due to the C67 commentary position. But, it seemed a very muted celebration at the end. Sure, the result today did not help but there is a deeper problem eloquently summed up by Bryce Curdy when he said "we are complete rubbish". I'm not sure I would go that far but I understand the sentiment.

As a business, the football club is in great shape. Not sure it could be any better. Unfortunately, the footballing side of the business, the one reason every single one of us supports the team, has suffered in the last two seasons. Anyone can point to our successes to dispel this comment but why is it then that we are not satisfied? It comes down to quality. Celtic supporters have been raised to expect a quality product on the field - we are not getting that. What we are getting served up is just enough quality to stay ahead of the domestic competition. For me, that is not enough.

I am bored watching this week in week out. When was the last season when we didn't manage an average of two goals per game? I want to see us win by 3, 4 or 5 goals against other SPL teams. There is no flair and no excitement (Naka's free-kick's excluded) in this team.

It is time for a change. I don't know if WGS has what it takes. He has succeeded in what was asked of him by the Board, but can he kick-on now, use the pot of money available to him to bring in quality players, sell at least 6 of the current 1st team squad and get what's left to give us what we want next season? I hope so - he will have my support.

Been in Celtic Park before on the day when we've collected the trophy the and lost the game..It's a strange feeling. A mixture of anger and pride with the pride rightly taking over.

There has been a lot of criticism of the Celtic fans on here recently. Booing the manager. Too quiet, Srachan isn't Celtic minded and that's why we don't love him...blah blah blah.

Today the 60,000 fans were the league winners.Even when we lost.
To HEARTS, at Celtic Park, which hurts more than root canal treatment.

The Celtic fans did their best to make it something special though. You can hand out all the cardboard trophies you like but without us it would be nothing...We ARE Celtic. We are the difference.

Despite the Glasgow Herald. Despite the Daily Record. Despite the best endeavours of The Evening Times, The Scotsman, Chic Young, Gordon Smith, Bill Leckie, BFDJ, et all...

ONE TENTH of the population of Glasgow were there today to support our team

You can't hire sixty thousand extras to sing You'll Never Walk Alone...and pay over twenty five quid for the privilege...
This club would nothing without us. Today showed that..and not for the first time...Did anyone acknowledge the fans today?...I hope so...

The Scottish press love to rubbish us. Any tiny flaw is put under the microscope.Although we lost today we still showed what we are. The real force beind Celtic Football Club

FWIW I thought we played OK going forward today but were far too slack at the back during that short period when Hearts put the pressure on. I haven't seen any TV pictures yet but from my seat in the Lisbon Lions lower I thought their penalty looked a decent shout - put it this way, if it had happened up the other end I would have been screaming for it.

We have to draw a line under this season, with the exception of the Cup Final.

No team has ever, in my recollection, performed at their best after the title has been won.

Therefore ,we can all save ourselves the angst of reguritating the type of posts that have been common this season.

No-one is deluded into thinking that we have been watching a great Celtic team, but what we have been watching is a resilient one.

We did lose big game players, like Keane, Hartson Petrov and even Maloney this season and their attitude and experience have been difficult to replace, never mind their talents.

If we can accept that a transitionery team took the title with a comfortable margin, can we not wait till we see what the close season additions will do for us, rather than plunge into the depths of despair because the team are looking out the sun block.

    We will improve.

    Guys

Havent seen the game form today so I cant really comment.Obviously disappointed with the result.

The general consensus seems to be that the team needs a major overhaul and that there's a pot of cash there to do it. Where does this come from? As far as I can see it has come ainly from message board contributors and Celtic web journos. I am really concerned our expectations of transfers pots are going to be disappointed this summer.

The last two transfer windows we have spent roughly what was brought in through player sales. It would seem more likely that this is the new guidelines WGS has been told to work within.

I do expect money to be spent in the summer but probably at the expense of a big player moving on, probably Boruc although maybe Nakamura, I certainly hope neither goes.

I have no in depth knowledge of financial affairs but I always was of the impression that the financial figures for the first halfths of the season where always good due to season book sales and CL ticket sales and the second half poorer due to lack of the above. Expect then a poorer set of results being announced after the season ends.

I hope I am wrong but I dont expect any big spend in the summer and I think many others are going to be disappointed.

With your comments to Tinytim, do i sense that Gordon and Peter are lining up a couple of body blows to Murray and Co in the transfer window?

If Rangers do beat us next week and you'll see the laptop loyal out force with Walter laying a marker down for next year.

I'm praying that WGS takes care of Walter Smith. To quote a Keegan phrase,I would love it, absolutely love it, if WGS with the the help of Tommy Burns could give him payback for the hell we endured in the 90's.

    I can't wait!!

    Paul67,

What's your take on Dougal? Me i think he is a complete tosser who like Dallas loves playing to the cameras. Trying to take over Dallas's mantle.

Every time he is embroiled in controversy. Funny how Strachan has been sent to the stands twice and both times it was him that done it.

Surely something has got to be done about this idiot.

He's prone to telling the odd lie in his match reports. Hence the
reason his arse nearly collapsed with Lennon incident.

He went into that meeting with his lawyer beside him because he knew that Celtic had him by the go nads.

He also did lie about Strachan in his match report earlier in the season. Was found out and Gordon didn't have a case to answer.

This guy should not be allowed to referee any Celtic games in the future.

I watchced the recording of the game and it was interesting to hear John Hartson getting stuck into him.

"not unlike Dougal to get involved in controversay"
Big John was relishing that he could say what he wanted because he couldn't get pulled up for it.

    WGS,

Surely the up and coming fixture is less important than the first one of the new season which will be at Matchbrox also.

I wonder if that one will be put back until the Setember holiday weekend to let their "new" manager bed himself in.

    Another home defeat.

Another biased, bitter, myopic performance from the Neil Lennon hater that is Stuart Dougall.

This cheating disgrace should NEVER be allowed near a Celtic match ever again.

    Neutral ?-

he couldn't even spell the word.

Noel I have to disagree. Myopic? That means you have bad eyes, right? Dougals can see perfectly well when reffing Celtic.
You have to hand it to the man Noel. Really. He has it down to a fine art. The rangers game was the last time I needed convincing that he is a BLATANT, Anti-Celtic professional who has and will continue to blight us until he retires. Devastatingly consistent, from sending off AT for a non-contact tackle to nullifying our corners while the ball is still coming over when we are pushing for a piece of the match.

Thought Pierre-Doumbe was outstanding 1st half and up to the penalty, after which I stopped paying attention.

New team next season bhoys so don't fret, but this lot owe us a win at ipox:)

    Keep The Faith

    Evening all.

After a right good afternoon and early evening out celebrating the HISTORIC retention of our status as Champions of Scotland, my attention span won't let me read through all the posts since this morning.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, though, when I can read the many positive comments from those posters who for weeks have been telling us that we should look beyond results to the rubbish (or worse) performances.

It will be great to see them congratulate Celtic on putting together an enjoyable and mostly creative show for the fans, despite today being a meaningless end-of season fixture against a decent team with lots still to play for. Their compliments on a performance which on 9 afternoons out of 10 with would have seen us walk the game with a fair referee overseeing the game, will fair help me get over the hangover that is waiting for me a few hours hence.

Their lavish praise for Gordon and the players will also silence those doubters who, like me, have occasionally wondered whether their fondness for criticism has psychological roots that reach deeper than a desire for cool, objective analysis.

A very good night to you all.

The Hearts pysio was truly a miracle worker.

Three times in the second half he brought players back from death's door for them to get up and play on.
Another spectacular piece of play acting when the player went down at the edge of our box.
We play on and he was up and running about no problem.

It's time for Celtic to let other teams know that we won't knock the ball out.

P.S Does anyone know if the Hearts pysio does private consultations as I an currently struggling with a dodgy knee.

  • At 29/04/07 22:59, EdwardUrsus said…

Lostrambling :- You bring up a tricky subject, my view is that if a player goes down then the team should still play on and let the ref decide if the game needs stopped. That way we avoid all the bad feeling and the should we/shouldn't we put the ball out. Too many teams act in the way you have pointed out. Take the decision from the players and give it to the ref.

dont know about being anti-celtic, but there is definitely something personal going on between dougal and wgs. penalties are debatable, but wgs's sending off wasnt.

thats him out of the dugout for next weekend. job done?

laporta's appearance on the podium for the trophy and the cuddle him and wgs shared told the story, not some headline from an interview where a innocent comment was taken out of context

lawwell stays as an integral part of the celtic "team." but not sure as chairman - its a non-exectuive post at present and lawwells strengths appear to be more nuts and bolts than overall strategy. he's got too good an engine and he's too valuable in his present job to move upstairs for me.

    eu

its not just your view - i may be wrong here but i think its the rules now. the referee decides if play should be stopped.

great day today. loved the reception neil lennon got when he was subbed, when he come on to lift the trophy and when he walked round the pitch with his wain after the game. seeing the way he interacts with the fans brings a lump to my throat. also loved seeing tommy burns dancing to its a grand old team. these are the people we should remember, proper celtic men.

disappointed with the performance today and beginning to worry about next weekend.

but tomorrow i will awake a champion.

It's late and I've been to the game, then the pub, so am not going to check my facts. I used to be complimetary of Dougal. The sending-off of Di Canio after he scored a penalty (against Hearts - what goes around) notwithstanding, I always saw him as balanced. Here's where my point may fall down due to nae facts, but I'm sure he went through an extended period reffing us in Rangers games .... but with us winning (6-2?). Then came the Neil Lennon thing last year and ever since when he's refereed us, things go against us. That, I don't think, is coincidence.

Referees have been generally in the shadows this season. The cynics would say that's what happens when you're winning, but I found them ok generally before Christmas.

And then Walter Smith returned and things change. Coincidence? Sorry, but I think not. Paranoia? Again, I think not. But two of the worst inept performances I've ever seen appeared this season - Falkirk away (18/3) - 'one penalty early, so you aren't getting another', then Dundee United (31/3) which was particularly poor for the linesmen. Both of those away defeats (consecutive) followed our home loss to Rangers and allowed them to close the gap. While I concede this is indeed bordering on paranoia, allied to the sending-off today, prior to next week, it's a body of evidence. My real worry is for next season.

Very good to hear from you. My folks are fine as am I. The Deveron fisherman's brother-in-law is still talking .... and talking. Hope that you and yours are all well and that you enjoyed a great family day out today. Didn't manage down myself unfortunately but am hoping to get to the final with a little assistance from lft snr.
There's much talk on here of "asset management". There is a very strong argument that the Chief Exec is currently the most valuable of our assets. I, for one, would be devastated if he walked away at the end of next season. However, as you correctly point out the skillsets required for developing corporate strategy and implementing it are entirely different, consequently I don't see him as a future Chairman.

In the 6-2 match Dougal managed to give Rangers a penalty which was soft.

As for the refs being in the shadows until Wally returned can't agree - the non penalty decision at Ibrox in December was classic scottish refereeing.

You talk about coincidence - is it sheer coincidence that Celtic have won the league every season since Dallas hung up his whistle?
Remember his match winning performance on Black Sunday!

    Paranoia?

Sorry to hear that Watchow snr is struggling but I'm sure he's not in too much pain tonight. Dissapointed that you won't be able to make it up as the course is in excellent condition at the moment. Invitations were issued to you both via lft snr but wasn't sure if the weekly tele conference had taken place yet. Couldn't understand last year why you opted to stand waist deep in water listening to the Deveron Fisherman's brother-in-law, rather than play on one of Alister Mackenzie's greatest creations. But any time you can manage, just let me know. You are both more welcome.
