Champions day at Celtic Park, despite the result

The sun shone on Celtic Park, the stadium was full and the Scottish Premier League trophy was presented to Neil Lennon on his second-last performance at one of world football's premier stadiums. The champions took their bow despite being beaten 3-1 by Hearts in a game they only dominated for a brief period after Hearts took a two goal lead.

Hearts are not a great team, not nearly as good as the side who got to within 20 points of Celtic last season, but they were given the freedom of Celtic Park to score their first goal. After Lee Naylor conceded a dangerous free kick 21 yards from goal, they must have wondered how they managed to attain a two goal lead.

At the free kick, Artur Boruc covered his right post, leaving an inviting looking space to his left. A defender on the post would have stopped the precisely hit shot easily.

All Celtic players are open to critical analysis, even Shunsuke Nakamura, whom I wavered in my usual robust endorsement of after a poor performance against St Johnstone, but yet again he created the goal which brought Celtic back into the game, crossing for Steven Pressley to head past his former team mate Craig Gordon.

He has been compared to the irrepressible Lubomir Moravčík, who was on hand to present the silverware at the end of the game. Moravčík was a real joy; he could score from what seemed any area of the field, managing a rate close to that of striker Chris Sutton. He also had the not-to-taxing job of finding opportunities for Henrik Larsson; if Shunsuke had such a striker on hand, his prowess would be even more renowned.

Stuart Dougal must have given 100 penalty kicks in his refereeing career, but few would have been as soft as the one awarded to Hearts which finished the game as a contest on 71 minutes. It is not the worst decision Celtic have been on the receiving end of this season, that honour goes to Kenny Clark for denying Neil Lennon a penalty at Ibrox in December for the clearest infringement in this history of sport, but it deserves special mention none the less.

Mr Dougal also took the opportunity to send Gordon Strachan to the stand, after the Celtic manager stepped outside his technical area, which was a curious decision, as after this, I counted six separate occasions when members of the Hearts coaching team stepped onto the field of play as the game progressed.

Six occasions! I had an advantage over Mr Dougal, from my temporary seat in the South Stand I could see a big white line clearly marking the field of play, perhaps the sunshine glistening off all those silver-foil trophies being held by Celtic supporters obscured his view. To suggest that he was being over officious with Gordon Strachan in order to extract revenge from their previous encounter, when the Celtic manager wiped the floor with him, would be unfair.

Still champions Mr Dougal.

SNakamura is the most skilful player at CP since the wee Slovak magician;to have the same effectiveness he has to assert himself more in games, perhaps moving to a more central position.

And for much of his Celtic career Lubo was playing with a genuinely higher quality of teammate, certainly in the forward positions, than Shunchan is now.

No doubt this will be addressed in the close season,or SN will be looking for Paul Mcstays shoulder to cry on.

Kingston was involved in two decisions that went against us, the soft penalty and the non penalty after he clearly blocked it with his arm.

They should send Dougal back to refs school although I'm not sure if that would do any good, he is clearly the SPL's best time waster for anyone who is playing Celtic.

I wouldn't even waste time on someone like Stuart Dougal who is quite clearly working to an agenda where Gordon Strachan and Celtic are concerned. I hope Gordon appeals the decision so we can find out exactly what it was that warranted an ordering off.

Like Gordon, Stuart Dougal could not, no matter how he tried, ruin another Champion day in Paradise for me.

Having said that I bet he is now a certainty to get the Cup Final.

    Here's my thoughts of yesterday...

Celts played better than they have for weeks, perhaps due to the lack of pressure...

Kingston was the best man on the park - strong, fast, skillful. Everything that his predecessor (Hartley) was not for us...

Eventful match in the Jock Stein upper - continuous racist abuse of Kingston to my right, two fans fighting each other to my left and pro IRA songs from the rear. Think I'll move seats for next season, away from the thugs and the nazis.

Doumbe at right back was great! Elvis had a solid game until the goal. Jarosik is clearly a better central midfielder than anywhere else. Naka had two successful tackles! We cant play with one man up when we have no pace in midfield to support..basic stuff.

    Sign Kingston.

    Kano,from the Guardian

"To continue the theme of football clubs having unusual crests or logos, I have noticed than the German Bundesliga 2 club, Greuther Fürth plays in what we would consider the Glasgow Celtic strip (green and white hoops), and moreover, has a shamrock in its crest," explains David Smith. "Wikipedia offers no explanation. How about you?"

"There is no Irish connection," writes our esteemed German correspondent Raphael Honigstein. "The shamrock is part of the code of arms of the city of Fürth (Greuther Fürth were founded in 1996, when TSV Vestenbergsgreuth and SpVgg Fürth merged), but the precise meaning and origin is unclear. It shows up in the code of arms of one leading family, others say it symbolises centuries of arguments of three local powers, who all laid claim to the city. Another theory says it symbolised the peaceful coexistence of Protestants, Catholics and Jews in the city."

Interestingly, the first of Fürth's three league titles (in their original inception) was presided over by English coach William Townley, who later took charge of Bayern Munich and the Dutch national side, while one of the club's most famous members and fans is former US secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, seen here on a past visit to the club's fantastically named Playmobil-Stadion.

I thought Kingston looked ok, for a Hearts player. Decent touches but not the type of player that will get going when the going gets tough. Thought Doumbe did ok, bit of pace and athletic on the ball - my major question would be why at 28 has be played less than 100 games in top level football.

I've had it with Ok signings, we've enough decent players for several million, not journeyman back up.

According to the BBC, WGS will face a 4 game touchline ban, as this is his second "sending off" of the season. He will have seven days from receiving a letter this midweek to appeal, so will be OK for Saturday.

No appeal means he would not be allowed in the dug out at the cup final. An appeal woouldn't be heard until July - so if he lost the ban would start next season.

The match shouldve been over by half time, but we dont have good and fit enough strikers. Even BBJVOH wasn't winnning much in the air against Berra.

For me the only baffling thing about Hartley's form is that anybody is surprised. He was rotten for Hearts this season, ever since being rushed back from an operation to play against AEK. I'll judge him after he's had a rest and a good preseason with Celtic in him, 7 games into his Celtic career is not the time for it.

Berra was Hearts best player I thought, bit of potential there.

Prior to the Final, we will resume full training, suitably refreshed to face a Dunfermline team suitable drained from their exertions to avoid relegation.

I actually thought we played fairly well yesterday. We had a bit of fluency in the first half and there some good moves (just no end product). Not sure what happened at the first goal, as the jambo seemed to knock it through three defenders and Boruc was slow coming out...almost like he expected an offside flag or something.

I agree about Hartley - didnt mean to pick on him specifically - I know we havent seen the best of him yet... but will we ever.

In terms of clearouts, here's what i think the chances are....

Definite - Miller, Beattie, Lenny, Telfer, Lawson, Quinn
Mibbes - Graveson, Jarosik, Pressley, Boruc (£££), Magic, Doumbe
Not - Naka, Rio, Aiden, Naylor, Wilson, Hartley, Brown, Big Bad Jan, Caldwell, Kennedy, Mick, Odea, Sno

I would keep Magic, as he was magic last season and a proper rest in the summer will do him good. I also think Naka will be a better player next year with a summer of rest...

My reading of the first goal was that Doumbe came across to tackle the lad, causing Pressley and Mc.Manus to stop in their tracks. JJPD had no business there as either one or other of the CBs were in a position to halt the Jambo. The hesitation gave the guy the chance to drive between them. Boruc was blameless.

Apart from that ,I thought Doumbe had a sound game and looks worthy of a punt.

Just been on Newsnow and they have a link to the Darnel website with the anouncement of Saturday's ref, there's no mention on our website or indeed the SFA's own refereeing website.

Does this mean they get word first on a Sunday night at the lodge?

Mixed regarding WGS ban. I think letting Lenny lead the team out for the cup final would be entirely appropriate.

As for WGS comments about hardly anybody leaving. Just want to state hear annow that I am delighted about that. I hope we hang on to Naka, Boruc, Graveson, Zurawski, JJ and even big Bobo .. unless this is a financial decision.

Lenny, Telfer and Alan Thompson need replacing. The bhoys that took us to Milan deserve to be around for another season.

Those that leave will want to leave and not because they are being pushed.

The more I hear from WGS the happier I become.

I fear that replacing Lenny will be a lot tougher than some people think. In fact I am already terrified about life without him !!

getting the midfield right next season will be one of the biggest tests he has faced since arriving at cp.

How good is your memory - Hand ball at Kilmarnock last week when Tommy G shot - pen not given. Hartley tripped at Aberdeen earlier in season - pen not given. A few seasons back Bellamy barged off the ball against Aberdeen when through on goal - pen not given (this led to the loudest booing of an official I've ever heard). Barry Ferguson trips over his own feet at ICT earlier this season - pen given. Naka pushed in box against St Mirren this season - pen given. All Mr Thomson decisions.

So I think he is bad. The above information is courtesy of 'bhoy' and father disclaims all reponsibility for any errors!

I didn't realise it was him, I thought he was appaling against St Johnstone other than giving JVOH the penalty he gave us nothing else all day. The tackle on Lee Naylor in particular.

It has to be said his linesman that day on our side of the pitch, opposite the main stand, was breathtakingly bad, in fact I reckon his match programme came in braille.

The hearts game was the worst I've seen JVOH play. I hope we don't try a 4-5-1 again with him up front (or anyone else for that matter unless it's practically a 4-3-3) as the ball doesn't stick to him well enough. I can't remember how many times the ball bounced off him yesterday... I started to realise what we missed when Hartson left. For a small guy Scott McDonald is very adept at holding the ball up so at least that's a positive for next season.

Winningemmell - Aye Robert Burns was a mason alright but maybe back then it was to do with organising yourself in secret against the powers of the ayatollahs a la John Knox. Or maybe it was a lads drinking club in the swinging 1870´s

I can always remember a friend telling me that on a Right to Work long march in the seventies they were put up in a Mason´s hall. A few references to work and all that ethic palava next to the triangles on the wall and all that did fit in with that. That was the first time I ever heard anything slightly positive about them.

Was that really a guy called Lennon that scored two goals for the Rangers yoofs? Hail Hail Doctor Winston O´Boogie, oor Neill and the wee Tottenham winger that is better than Beckham.

The protaganism of the ref is depressing, there needs to be more
"help" from the video playback to overrule any decision. It spreads out the work and lessens the stranglehold that these Dougal types have. Then slowly and surely the S.F.A. will have in place absolute neutrality, objectiveness and plurality. Who knows there may be a tea boy at the SFA called Lennon by 2012

    From the official site:

    Newsroom Staff
FOLLOWING yesterday’s match against Hearts, when Gordon Strachan was sent to the stand by referee Stuart Dougal, media reports have suggested that the Celtic manager could be facing a four-game touchline ban, which would include the forthcoming Tennent's Scottish Cup final.

In response to enquiries regarding the possibility of an appeal by Celtic, a spokesperson said: “The Club has received calls all day asking if we would be making an appeal. It is important to say that at this stage we have no idea what it is we would be appealing against.

“Neither Gordon, or anyone else at the Club has any idea why he was sent to the stand.”

    nice one

Not another shout to put a man on the post at a free kick ? A man on the post plays every Hearts player onside, meaning two men stand in front of Boruc so he can see nothing. Chances of a goal are much increased.

    Tinytim

I'm not sure what there is to gain from this, Paul Telfer was persuaded to stay at Celtic in the last two transfer windows. It's pretty common knowledge that his family never joined him in Scotland and that recently he hadn't seen his children in a month. I have a source reasonably close to Paul who indicated that enough was enough, he never mentioned a bust up or anything but under the circumstances I'm inclined to hope we never hear what happened.

    Gents,

I agree with the sentiment - it was a very emotional day for me too. Enjoyed it immensely and not a day for me to analyse things too much. Can never get tired of it and it remains a magnificent achievement to have seen off the threat of PLG and ruined another wedge of Murray's investment.

The team now needs to concentrate on the cup - we need to start picking up the pace and start playing with less fear (and create more chances). I think we may be fortunate that Hibs got put out (though you never know what Hibs team is going to turn up).

Its clear we need some major investment of our own - I am gravely concerned at GS's comments on the number of signings he plans - I hop
