Champions League qualification issues clarify

It was an significant weekend for Champions League qualification in Germany. Third place VFB Stuttgart, occupying the final qualifying spot and who have a lower Uefa coefficient than Celtic, beat fourth place Bayern Munich, who are above Celtic in the Uefa table.

Stuttgart now hold a five point advantage with four games remaining and play bottom side Mönchengladbach on Saturday.

High seeded Valencia lost away to Real Madrid, allowing lower seeded Real Zaragoza to slip into the final Spanish Champions League spot on goal difference.

If Europe’s leagues finish the way they stand at the moment, Celtic will provisionally be 16th Champions League seed, the last Pot 2 position. The final Dutch place is decided by a post-season tournament between Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, both of whom are seeded above Celtic, and Feyenoord and FC Twenty, both of whom are seeded below Celtic.

We will have to qualify, of course, but so will a few higher seeds.

Celtic have never finished above a Pot 1 or 2 team in their four previous Champions League campaigns. This will also be the last season we benefit from the ‘Seville’ run, so a repeat of this season’s endeavours will not be easy.

A lengthy run in the Uefa Cup looks more likely than in the Champions League.

    Kano,

I still harbour hopes of returning there one day. Our trip there wasa week's holiday (believe it or not) courtesy of a competition win in a radio station over here.

I still visit there on Google Earth to find our hotel which was (and still is) right opposite the WACA.

If I do, I hope to try out that porch of yours!

    Grim reading Kano.

    2003 Seville season 23 points.
    2004 CL/Uefa season 15 points.
2007 CL knock out season 13 points.

As I have said before, getting a run in the Uefa Cup is the dirty wee secret of how to progress in Europe.

The UEFA Cup was on display in Central Station, the day of the semi-final.
    It's an impressive trophy.

One of the advantages of being a strong team in a weak league is that European qualification is almost a given at the start of any season. The downside is that the standard of football in general drags us down.We need to be aiming at some form of European involvement in the second half of every season.

arguably the seville run was one of o neils biggest legacy's for the points as much as anything else.

We need to reach last 16 again i think next season to have any hope, but as we have never bettered a 2nd seed team it perhaps shows 3rd seed is our level for now

For me, THE key objective for next season is to qualify for the CL group stages; the second is to win the SPL; the third is to come at least 3rd in the CL group stage. Everything else is icing on the cake. I'd be more than happy with the potential for an extended run in the UEFA Cup to keep us all amused after Christmas.

    comments attributed to jiri jarosik

Czech midfielder Jiri Jarosik has hinted he would be interested in a summer move back to the Premiership - with Tottenham a possible destination.

The 29-year-old former Chelsea man, who helped Celtic retain the Scottish Premier League title last weekend, has heard of interest from south of the border and will consider his future at the end of the season.

"I read it in the newspapers," he said of rumours linking him with a return to England. "The Scottish league is not bad. Sixty-thousand people come to each of the Celtic games, but the Premiership is something else."

He added: "You play in full stadiums against very high-quality opponents. We shall see after the season.

"I am glad not to have been forgotten in England. I am an experienced footballer, I already tried to play in England and I will not be expensive. I am, let's say, 'usable'."

On the chances of a switch to White Hart Lane to join Chelsea's London rivals Spurs, Jarosik responded: "It is a superb team, playing still around fifth place.

"The stadium is also always sold out, and many big derby games are played. I can see only pluses there. But I do not want to go into detailed thinking about this, we shall see after the season."

An Interesting article from Tommy Burns

By your man McDonald in The Herald

Another year another title. Celtic's progression to the championship may have been a formality but Tommy Burns could be forgiven for looking back on the past 12 months without any hint of complacency.

A year ago, Burns stood in the stands while fans applauded him for his fight against skin cancer as Celtic were presented with the championship trophy. A year ago, too, Burns was assistant manager of Scotland.

If the season at Parkhead has been one of success, the former Celtic player has not had far to look for trials in his professional and personal life.

He has found comfort in surviving both. Of his illness, a vibrant Burns says simply: "I'm fine now." The treatment is still ongoing but he is strong in spirit and in body.

The Scotland situation prompts mixed emotions. Burns was grateful for the chance to serve but disappointed he was not considered as a replacement when Walter Smith went to Rangers.

"I would have liked to have been given the opportunity," he says without rancour. "There wasn't any communication coming from the SFA. What I decided when Walter and Alistair McCoist left their positions with Scotland for Rangers was that I was not going to be No.2 to anybody else."

Interestingly, he would not automatically have jumped at the job. "Would I have taken it or would I have stepped back? I would have liked to have had the opportunity to have made the decision."

He is not bitter, though. He says of the SFA: "I wish them all the best. That's gone. It's in the past."

So much for the disappointment; the fulfilment is easier to gauge, though it may come as a surprise to those who insist on a sectarian divide.

"I thoroughly enjoyed working with Berti Vogts," says Burns. When asked to continue the role under Smith, the decision was easy.

"I thought, crikey, how many chances do you get to work under Walter Smith? That was a fantastic experience to work alongside him, not only on a professional but a personal basis. This guy has probably got all the things you would look for in a top-class manager: very mature as a man, great understanding of the game, great understanding of people, great tactical nous."

He says of Smith and McCoist: "I really miss the two of them. Great personalities, great football people."

Those who insist that the Old Firm can never find common ground will choke as Burns adds of Smith: "He's a unique guy in football. I still speak to him on the phone."

Burns returned to Celtic in 2000 after a brilliant career as a player and a chequered one as a manager. His formidable achievements at Kilmarnock led to him being appointed Celtic manager but he was sacked after his team played with style but no silverware.

A period at Newcastle United as a coach and then an unsatisfactory spell as manager at Reading was followed by a return to Celtic.

He was charged with recharging the club's youth development and has no qualms about stating that he did not like what he saw.

Are we a buying club or one that rears its own? I think that the latter is what we will be looked on as "There was a lot needing to be done. There was a community programme to be put in place. That programme is enormous now. You would have thought Celtic would have had such a programe, as they were a club that was founded for the poor in the East End."

There were other problems. "The scouting network that was here was inadequate for a club of this stature." Neither was there an education and welfare programme for the young players. Sports science and a coaching curriculum had to be introduced.

The major problem remained. "We had to spread the net far and wide because obviously Scotland wasn't producing enough players for Celtic, particularly to be able to come in and play Champions League. So we had to look and see if we could find better ones in Ireland or Iceland or Holland."

The operation in Ireland was strengthened by the recruitment of a full-time youth scout. The search too now encompasses the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Burns states simply: "It is incumbent upon us to go to find the best players at 15 or 16."

One of those is Tomas Pavlov, a 16-year-old Bulgarian who is benefiting from Celtic's infrastructure. "He's been over at training at various times and we've brought his parents over to let them see where he would be staying, what type of education and welfare."

Burns hopes Pavlov will follow in the footsteps of a succession of youngsters who have stepped into the first team. He rejoices in the promotion of such as Stephen Crainey, Ross Wallace, John Kennedy, David Marshall, Liam Miller, Shaun Maloney, Aiden McGeady and Stephen McManus over the years.

But he has strong opinions on what happened to two of those players. "Liam Miller leaving was a devastating blow for everybody. He was such a talented lad and him being allowed to leave was very disappointing for people who are working down below. You get some talent and all of a sudden it's away, à la Maloney, which was the same thing.

"That can very difficult to take. I don't think there is any way of beating about the bush on that. That is something that really irks me: that we produce talent like that only for them to leave. Maloney and Miller could have been players here for the next 10 years."

Of those still at the club, Burns has forthright opinions. "Darren O' Dea is exceptional. He went to the San Siro and played in highest company at 20 years old. It's remarkable."

He is pleased, too, that McManus has been rewarded for his patience. "He has shown other youngsters that it's not about how quickly you get into the first team, it's about staying in it. He is the great example of someone who waited and waited, almost waited too long, and the opportunity arrives and he never looks back."

He is revealing about McGeady. "He could be anything," says Burns. "You say you never know about young players, but I did about McGeady. He was telling us at 15 he should be in the first team, so you knew he was up for it all right.

"He was somebody who knew, probably from about 12 years old, that he was going to be a footballer at a real high level and he has never deviated from that. I think his play has been absolutely sensational. At 21 years, some of his games have been phenomenal. What's he going to be like at 25?"

McGeady, of course, is Burns's type of player. "I like his bravery on the ball," he says. He concedes that the player's final pass is not yet perfect, his decision-making not infallible. But Burns likes both his ability and his mental toughness. That psychological obduracy is something he is keen to inculcate in all his proteges. "At this club we tell them to be brave, to be honest and to show for the ball."

Burn's role at the club is becoming increasingly important as Celtic seek to breed their own first-teamers. He appreciates the youngsters are now getting their chance through a mixture of circumstance and inclination.

Gordon Strachan is more amenable to bringing in young players than his predecessor, Martin O'Neill. "This manager has not been given anything like what Martin was given and that is no disrespect. He came in at a different time when the club was streamlining and had to cut the wage bill."

This has resulted in debuts for teenagers. Burns has a fascinating view of the future.

"Celtic were never what you might consider a buying club. If they bought, it was locally and modest: a Willie Wallace from Hearts, a Dixie Deans from Motherwell. In the last 10 or 15 years the culture has changed and there is a win-at-all-costs mentality.

"Celtic and Rangers have more money in Scotland than the rest of the clubs. But with that comes an increased expectation from the supporters who want to win, win, win all the time.

"Twenty-five years ago people would have said who is the next youth player we can bring in? That has become more and more diluted as time goes on because managers now cannot wait for wee Johnny to come through. They need a good player now. Now they will sign a guy who may stunt the growth of the young player.

"We've managed to get some good ones through, but only because the manager has given them the opportunity."

He said there was a central question. "Are we a buying club or are we a club that rears its own and becomes a selling club? I think that the latter is ultimately what Celtic will be looked upon as.

"The philosophy of the club has to come from the hierarchy. They must say: This is the type of club we are. We bring through our own young players and we resource the abilities to bring them through.' I think it is slowly coming round to the way it was when I was younger."

Another season, another turn of wheel.

Kano, here is a link to all the info you could possibly want on UEFA coefficients, rankings etc..

As you can see, Celtic will have to make significant progress in the next few seasons even to maintain our standing from the beginning of this season. We will rue the Artmedia experience for several years to come!

It would serve us better getting to the UEFA Cup QF every season than the CL QF.

For example, we accrued 11 coeff points this season (plus the national association points), whereas the losing quarter finalists in the UEFA Cup are as follows:

    Spurs 18 points
    Benfica 16 points
    AZ Alkmaar 16 points
    Bayer Leverkusen 12 points

Paul,as a wee aside to the pot 2 thingy.

If we are a pot 2 team,is it therefore harder to pick up points,as we will be playing against only one team in the group who is ranked above us as opposed to playing three below us.

Is it the case you pick up more points for beating people ranked above you?

If this is the scenario,Do we actually want pot 2?

In that case stuff the Champions League knock out for a year or two.

If it will guarantee us getting direct entry into thing for a few years in the future without qualifiers,I think a wee bit of consolidation in the Uefa cup(after a respectable third in the group stage)for a couple of years would set us up nicely for a real assault on the thing in 3 or four years time.

  • At 24/04/07 12:58, michael said…

So the plan would be qualify for the Group stage of the CL[please wait while your cash is being counted];aim to finish third and then go for glory in the UEFA Cup.

if we had a finisher at the club..(maloney or bellamy) we would have done for Milan and they are looking good for the final.

Porto and Monaco have shown smaller clubs can make it to the final then anything can happen.

I think the defeat to Copenhagen was more disastrous than people appreciated. Honestly think we could have made the semis of the Big Cup if we had won that game

Sorry folks, I got carried away and thought that Celtic had reached the QF of the CL... I must have envisaged that penalty shout having gone our way!

So I should be comparing last 16 CL against QF of the UEFA Cup.

However, only ONE of the teams eliminated in the last 16 stage of the UC actually scored less points than Celtic, and that was Braga, who were just one point short of Celtic in spite of finishing 3rd in their UC group!

On coefficient points this season for teams exiting the UC at the last 16 stage:

Newcastle Utd won their group and earned 17 points 6 more than Celtic)!

Rangers won their group and earned 13 points (+2).

Even Maccabi Haifa (2nd in group) and Shakhtar Donetsk (ex CL) earned more than Celtic (12 each), as did PSG (with 13), who only won 1 of their 4 group games!

Lens finished 3rd in their group and equalled Celtic's total, with Celta Vigo (2nd) also on the same number of points.

By winning the SPL and qualifying for the CL every season Celtic are actually in effect reducing their standing in European football! If they finished 3rd in the SPL every year and entered the UEFA Cup they would probably accrue more points year on year and be firmly esconced in the top 16 ranked teams!

Let's hope Mr Platini sees the folly in the seeding/coefficient system and changes it to recognise that the CL is the premier tournament, in which positive results are far harder to come by. Perhaps a win in the CL should be worth 3 coeff points while a UEFA Cup win should be worth 2 points?...

  • At 24/04/07 13:13, michael said…

That would be pretty difficult[although might spark some interesting discussion!]-to finish 3rd in the SPL.

Considering how poorly we played just to finish 1st...

Who else will be watching Man Utd v Milan tonight wearing their Milan shirt or scarf acquired during our trip to Italia?

I'd rather be able to say "at least we (only just) went out to the eventual winners" than "we narrowly beat the eventual winners at home in the group stage".

There are cliches and there are cliches, but the latter of those just doesn't cut it in the cliche stakes!

Coefficient points reward success but in actual fact I think they should be scrapped in respect of individual teams.

It's a bit of a vicious circle, you need to have a good history of points to have a realistic chance of a good cup run, but you can’t get a good points tally without several good runs. Now factor in the idea that a good run gets you lots of cash to strengthen and is likely to maintain your comparative superiority for the next season and beyond. It maintains a monopoly of sorts, or is it an oligopoly? Or a collusive oligopoly? (Steady on! –ed)

There are too many UEFA nations now to have a tournament based on a league format without elimination rounds so a collective national seeding must have some merit to determine rounds of entry for clubs of that nation. However I think this would have relative trends much easier to buck in a shorter period than the individual club coefficient system if collectively the country’s representatives were competing to a decent standard each year.

No league should have four representatives and other than keeping clubs from the same country apart I think the group stage draw should be relatively open. No club that has not won its league should get automatic qualification. ‘Champions’ Cup or ‘Champions’ League has to have at least some sort of meaning.

At some point we have to stop the rich getting richer, it’s the only way for real competition. But money talks louder than ever in football so Platini has his work cut out.

The truth is we can all be too protective of Celtic. If we got our much talked about move to England I’m sure we’d be fighting for four places from the Premiership to be maintained and damn the competition! But it’s the same clubs from the same nations competing at the latter stages ever year, with a wild card thrown in every now and again. This is not a demographic phenomenon of footballing skill, it is a direct result of finance. It is, basically, unfair. The solutions are hard to find, but finding the person(s) with the resolve to implement them will be much harder.

    KERRANG! CSC credentials?

I saw Cradle a few weeks ago, the guy has some range on that voice, it's rock n roll, but not as we know it!

2 weeks ago it was the 69eyes supporting Wednesday 13 in A'dam, great stuff! This weekend for me it's the 'Stairway to Heaven' rock bar, Utrecht, it's the Dutch Kinks Preservation Society annual bash, main band always has a few Kinks ex-members playing and telling stories. A great day always, everybody singing along!

You Kerrang csc guys would love the 'Stairway to Heaven',,,maybe 40 signed guitars on the wall from Metallica to Black Crowes to Zep, even one from Kurt. I'll post a few picks of the bar and gig next week, for those who may be interested...

To Celtic.I see jiri is talking about interest from Spurs. Good idea! Rather keep TG than Jiri but to be honest, I would rather both stayed and improved, as I'm sure they will, for next season at least.

    HAIL HAIL

STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONEES !!!

You're right wee man, Pot 2/3 is a minor point compared to actually qualifying for the group stages.

Does the prospect of the big boys such as PSV, Bayern & Valenica not making it mean we're more likely to meet a non-seeded nasty from these countries in the qualifier ?

What a pile of guano, all this "Nakamura to leave Celtic" stuff that the meeja has dredged up today, in an attempt to sour the party atmosphere.

In order to illustrate what Naka was actually trying to say, I have extracted the following from the Walfrid-OG site, and added the bits in [square brackets] to clarify meaning/perspective (when considered against his earlier reported comments):

"Naka speaks to Japanese press about [not] leaving Celtic

Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura, who has powered his side to the Scottish Premier League championship, says he is feeling old at 28 and pondering [whether or not at this stage in his career, and given his standing at Celtic, there would be anything to gain in seeking] a transfer [from the team that he has clearly grown to love... and is loved by].

"Celtic are a great team," said Nakamura whose free-kick sealed a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday.

"We have a coach with solid ideas and our supporters are wonderful," the left-footed player told Japanese journalists in Glasgow, as heaps of praise for him continued at home.

"If I were young, I'd want to stay at Celtic a little longer [to gain experience and enhance my reputation by performing well in the Champions League] and then play in Spain before returning to Japan at last. But I'm getting old" [and know what side my bread is buttered on, so I feel that perhaps I should stay and be a hero at Celtic, rather than becoming a senior bit-part player at some mid-table La Liga club] Nakamura said, according to the business daily Nikkei.

"I want to focus on the remaining matches now and I want to take my time in the off season and think about [whether or not I should even be entertaining the idea of] a transfer [as I now realise how crazy I would be to leave Paradise]."

Nakamura was voted the Player of the Year by the Scottish Professional Footballers' Association hours after Celtic's title triumph and also won the Goal of the Season honour.

The former J-League Yokohama Marinos star was the first Japanese to win a top playing award in any European league.

His tone [has been reported in such a way by the sensationalist meeja that it seems to] contrast(s) with an interview he gave to Celtic's official website on which he said: "I'll definitely be at Celtic Park next season, hopefully to lift my third championship in a row. [Now you can't get much more black and white than that... but as usual, those whose job it is to create headlines out of nothing in order to sell their vile rags to as many gullible members of the public as possible, have managed to paint fifteen shades of grey in order to suit their own warped agenda!]"

    Dear Fellow Champions -

Obviously I am referring here to my regrettable decision to rush back to the computer and to type "GOD BLESS J*M J*FFRIES"

I am sure you will all appreciate that at the time I was in the grip of powerful and irrational emotions, however I make no excuses. I realise I have gone over the score, and I have let myself and the fans down.

I would like to assure everyone I will be doubly vigilant regarding my behaviour during and after the Scottish Cup Final.

    Thank you.

    Smashing - Cheers WG.

One of my Pandora channels started playing his stuff to me - don't know if you've used Pandora, it's a streaming music website where you design your own radio channels by inputting artists or songs that you like, and then evolving it from there by telling it whether you like what it's playing, or adding new artists into the mix. So for instance, the channel that started playing me Robyn Hitchcock was primed with something like Roy Harper, Syd Barrett, and Nico - and then it goes to a database with hundreds of different musical factors and looks for stuff that has a lot in common with your station profile.

Highly recommended if you've not come across it already...

Is there a god? In the field of footy websites, only on CQN can we fall out on such mattters. My old friend WG referred earlier to my posting that 'Naka is God!' and highlighted that none took offence to my light-hearted, nimble-fingered (and it has to be said successful) attempt at a first.

Well, too right none should take offence because I happen to have the right to say whatever I want as long as it doesn't break the law. As has anyone else. Some fellas on this blog need to remember that. I have the right to say that God exists and that God doesn't exist. I have the right to be contradictory and downright incorrect - a right I choose to use with alarming frequency.

Also let us not forget that it is incumbent upon Paul67 to ensure that this blog does not breach legal restrictions or is in bad taste. That's his job - I wouldn't want it. If he didn't do this with the unswerving dedication that we all know he provides then CQN would not be here. What's in bad taste? That's for Paul to decide. Is this censorship? No it's editing.

Now to the statemant Naka is God. It's simple - he is.

In shinto religion (that's the native Japanese code rather than the Highland game with sticks) all beings contain a kami, spiritual essence or god and it is incumbent on followers of this faith that we nourish our kami or god through the pursuit of excellence or purity. In shinto much more emphasis is placed on excellence in this world, instead of preparing for the next.

Whereas in shinty I think the emphasis is on common assault.

Having studied closely Shunsuke's free-kicks over the past 2 years there can no doubt that he has reached a state of perfection to the point that his kami or god status is absolute.

Let me say this again, with this time a caveat. In my opinion - Naka is God!

I'd prepare yourself for Paul67 to reply with a bunch of statistics about Pot B last 16 qualifiers but I tend to agree with you.

I don't think managers or players take any notice of the coefficient and anyway the teams in Pot B and C are of near enough the same quality.

If we were in Pot A that would be great but in Pot B we could get a terrible draw or get a great draw in Pot C.

The most important thing is domestic league winners getting automatic entry to the group stages. Platini should and hopefully will sort that out soon.

    Evening All,

Sitting in a wee hotel in Leoben having a cool beer considering where best to support Milan this evening in this small but interesting town.

Loved it on Sunday at Rugby Park, we were sitting right behind Naka's free kick in the third row of the upper tier behind the goal had a great, it appeared, slow motion view of the ball hitting the net, brilliant!

The blog has been a wee bit heated the last day or so my feeling is that when people with strong opinions collide then the one with the most volatile temperament will be the one to make a statement by not coming back and that appears to be what has happened but nevertheless good luck with regard to your family situation if you are reading (which I am sure you are you wont be able to help yourself) and take it easy in the future.

With regard to our European situation if we improve the squad in the summer and we have to believe that we will why should we fear a third pot seeding if it comes to pass? If we look at the semi finals tonight with a wee bit of luck we might well have been playing Man Utd again as I would have fancied our chances against Bayern Munich.

It is ridiculous in the extreme that a win in the EUFA cuo counts for the same as the Champion League but surely Michel Platini will change this and hopefully also to ensure that the champions of each country are represented in future as should be their right in the competition.

Anyway have a good night all and Forza Milan!
