guess who?

Right now I'm more bothered about the state of Celtic, rather than Aston Villa.
-
i hope he he is a bench warmer in the championship next season.

Re-posted form the end of the previous thread (now I'll go read the new thread!):
Perhaps a little more competition from the also-rans is just what is needed to re-energise our players into playing with more passion, commitment, energy, and hopefully skill? For both fans and players alike, the now routine procession to the title is becoming a little tedious post-Xmas.
Having no real pressure to perform is detrimental to a player's appetite. The recent home game v Rangers being a prime example of the reasons for the current malaise. We lost at home to our greatest (nah, strike that... our closest) rivals and we didn't really care that much as it was completely meaningless with regard to the destination of the title.
Think of when you play (or have played) footy youself. If it's just a friendly or social kickabout you're not that bothered if the other team score a goal or win the game. It's just a friendly. But if it's a crucial league or cup match you will give everything you can to prevent the opposition scoring or winning.
It's not really any different for the Celtic players. At the moment they are so far ahead of everyone else that it doesn't matter if they win a few, so many of the games have assumed the status of "just a kickabout".
Personally, I would love to see them go through the season undefeated, or winning every game, scoring a record number of goals and conceding the fewest ever en route. But in reality it never happens like that. As soon as it is sewn up (and remeber, the bookies paid out around Xmas!) they relax, and this inevitably leads to a drop in standards and a few slip-ups.
The paying customers are however entitled to demand a quality product, and the clubs management hierarchy should be taking steps to ensure that this continues to be delivered regardless. Let's hope that they are.

Last post.
I was writing with a bit of tongue in cheek. It is all GS's fault. The poor displays and loss of form also 13 points ahead hoping for his second successive title. It's a package with good and bad.
There are probably circumstances that we are unaware of that determine selection decisions.
For example, it has been reported that contracts have been slanted towards appearance and win bonus'. Which could mean that the guys who built the 19 point lead would be rewareded by being left out of the team with the loss of earnings to follow.
I also think the big lead has allowed him the luxury of playing Neil towards, what I hope is his last season, the title
-
I honestyl don't care about Maloney or indeed about Aston Villa. Won't bother to watch what is sure to be another turgid performace between two poor sides.
As Celtic as struggling to cross the line, nerves says Collie...then why not play a couple of bhoys who show no nerves at all. Our young guns, have shown tiem & again they have have the mental strength to step in at vital times when thrown in the deep end. We do not require them win us games, merely to provide the wee spark that Maloney injected into a few games last year to set off the fans / team in general.
A gallus spirit, chase lost cause and take a man on...Nicky Riley could easily be such a player.
We desperately need to add some pace to the side, so taking the decision to drop Lennon would also add pep to the midfield, ensure a better supply to the front men and give others less work to do.
The league is ours...so let's go and TAKE IT BHOYS.
-
i've just read barru robson will get a one match ban with a further four IF he gets booked again in the next four matches! now forgive me for being paranoid but had that been lennon they would be after his blood and a four match ban minimum would have been applied!
ludicrous!
p.s beattie zurawski and miller out
a half decent striker with the faintest hint of a first touch and ability to score in!
-
Paul are you trying to deflect the current anomisty towards our manager in another direction. MON?(and using a former player to get your point across..shrewd)
I'm afraid it won't help here. From speaking to fellow Tims at the weekend, there is definitley a worry now about WGS. His team selections and performances this season has been bemusing and very poor (apart from the odd occassion) and the standard of play has dropped alarming. WGS speak's a good game but his team very rarely deliver one. I know who I would start with, in the summer clearout.
Just another point we were discussing our pervious and current teams. And only 3 of the current side would have had a chance of getting into Mr O'Neill's team. Boruc, Naka? and Naylor(only because it is was a problem position)
I'm sure others (on this blog esspecially) would have a different view, but this was a general feeling among 10 or so Bhoys
-
Paul,
Surely the Maloney situation is one upon which no-one on this board is qualified to comment?
Do we know Maloney's financial situation? His family situation? His relationship with WGS and others at CP or indeed MON? Maybe he is carrying an injury that he thinks will curtail his career? Maybe he is bored in Scotland?
There are hundreds of reasons why Maloney might have chosen this move- money being one of them (and a very valid one at that). Of course we are all going to say he made a mistake, but we are being presumptious if we think we think we know better than Shaun Maloney what is better for himself and his career.
And the hint of "serves you right" which I detect in your post is unbecoming of you and this excellent blog.
Shaun is gone- his decision, no-one elses. Good luck to him and Stan and MON tonight.
-
good luck to martin o neill yes, but with regards to stan and maloney i couldn't care less and would find it hilarious if they fail miserably. They made it clear they didn't want to play for us anymore and only the legend that was our number 7 went on to anything better.
Andybhoy
agree to a certain extent there are players in our team right now who aren't fit to wear the jersey beattie and miller the two main culprits. when you get paid thousands a week and play with the ball every day surely a first touch is the least you can expect! the jury seems to be out on big jan vennegoor maybe he needs a decent player beside him but at the moment he is a poor mans suttan and hartson who for my money were both more impressive footballers and goalscorers
big name striker in the summer please!!!!!!!!!
-
Whilst Maloney made a huge error in judgement by joining Aston Villa, our play has definitely suffered without him. We look less clinical in the final third without his change of pace, good decision making & ability to convert chances.
McGeady undoubtedly has unbelieveable skill, however i'm still of the opinion that he's a luxury we can't afford. On Saturday i continually watched him make positive runs with the ball showing amazing technique & quick feet, but to what end? In his defence maybe that's more to do with WGS playing him out wide left rather than centrally.
Other conundrums in the current set up are: Hartley's poor form yet still getting a game, Lennon past his sell by date yet still commanding a starting place, Jarosik playing as if he's had a right good bevvy just before kick off, yet still gets a run of games & basically our midfielders not getting close enough to our forwards to create chances. When i say forwards, i don't mean Kenny Miller & Craig Beattie as they are runners.
When we reflect back on a very successful season in terms of honours, the biggest mystery for me is Riordan & Gravesen not getting a run of games. Whilst neither player has blown us away with their performances, they have at least shown glimpses of what our starting eleven badly need: Goals & driving play from midfield.
-
Rarely Post here but thought I'd ask this..
On Saturday a friend told me that Big JVoH only managed to ever play 3 games on the trot at any one time for PSV before getting injured then the same, 3 then injured and so on, I've never heard this before. Can someone tell me if this is nonsense or not?
Bloody hope not....
-
Neg Anon suggested an open debate on the issue of a customer or a fan.
I think this is of greater value than focussing on a former player with a struggling midlands club.
Alternatively we could be talking about what can be done to shore up attendances at Celtic Park.
Attendances are falling at an alarming rate as anyone who attends matches and sees the swathes of empty seats will testify.
It cannot be down to any single factor however the standard of football we have witnessed must rank high up there in the list of reasons.
I would be surprised if season book sales do not fall again this summer continuing this worrying trend.
-
Andybhoy1967, you are approaching fantasist territory there. I wrote about Shaun Maloney and Derek Riordan, if you think Celtic fans are so easily led that this would have them focussing on Martin O’Neill I strongly suspect you are wrong. I was clear in my criticisms of the team on Saturday and chose to write about a different subject today instead of wallowing/bleating on about the same thing, as is my right and my judgement on how to keep the blog fresh.
If you would like more time to wallow/bleat, knock yourself out.
You might not rate our manager, you might have believed all along that he would win the league last season, be 13 points ahead this season, get to the knock out stage of the Champions League and take Milan to extra time when he got there….
…. but still not rate him. You are entitled to your opinion, but you are definitely getting things wrong with your comment above about me.
It’s easy managing Celtic, just anyone who has never done it, they are sure to tell you.
I bet any money you would get a very different story from someone who has managed Celtic. In particular I am thinking about Martin O'Neill here.
I bet he would be fulsome in his praise of the job Gordon has done, especially while bringing the football budget down.
But what would he know?
Better still; ask Italiabhoy, he will tell you about the intricacies of the player’s home lives, their form, their injuries and a whole lot of other circumstances.
Interesting that you don’t think Neil Lennon would get into Martin’s team. Hmm.
J tim bag, I have been reliably informed that Jan had an excellent fitness record at PSV.
-
Don't really understand the mentatlity of hoping ourt former players fail. Maybe its a Scottish thing. Petrocv and Maloney are former SPL and Celtic players of the year. Why would anyone want them to fail and have others associate their inability to cut it in the EPL with having played in a poor league with a poor team.
Dunno, but I think some of you should look in the mirror.
As Italiabhoy says: Nobody knows the full story and I bet dollars to donuts that nobody on here would be happy with others telling them how to advance their career.
-
Have you ever met an ex girlfreind, someone you loved.
You dont wish them any harm, perhaps you think what did i ever see in them? indifference is the most you can muster.
That is how i feel about any ex Celt.

The article posted earlier in the blog by Dick Byrne regarding the problems now plaguing Leeds is obviously a salutory lesson in letting ambition and ego to run free. Another example is of course 'the house that David built' across the city!
But in the current climate where, understandably perhaps, our support is becoming a bit fractious and insecure about the immediate future, next season and in some quarters even demonstrating a lack of confidence in our caoaching/management, I would suggest that there is an even more 'in-your-face' lesson to be learned from a top table club!
Real Madrid had a manager till summer 2003 called Vicente Del Bosque.
His record was astounding:
They won La Liga in 2001 and 2003 and the UEFA Champions League in 2002, their centenary year. They also won the Intercontinental Cup, the European Super Cup and the Supercopa de España in both 2001 and 2003.
However his face didn't fit and the Madrid president Florentina Perez didn't think that he was playing football the way Madrid should and that he didn't give enough prominence to the Galactico signings.
So they took the obvious route and sacked him thus opening up a path to a glorious future through Carlos Quieroz (one season), Jose Antonio Camacho (two months), Mariano Garcia Ramon (three months), Vanderlei Luxemburgo (1 year), Juan Ramon Lopez Caro (5 Months), and now Fabio Capello (9 months so far)!
They have now won nothing since removing Del Bosque.
Instead of building on the strength of a winning team, winning coach and successful approach by making changes here and there, oiling the wheels where rust or age had caused friction, they went for some sort of grande revolution and they now find themselves chasing a pack that they should be leading by the proverbial street!
Capello will probably be for the off at the end of the season and the viscious circle of instability and uncertainty will once again envelop the club, its players and its supporters.
I think falling into the same trap as is being mooted by the more depressively emotional (I understand by the way this depression)would not only set us back 2 years, but would provide a massive boost to the confidence, swagger and supremacist tendencies of our so-called-rivals and media opponents.
Fan power quite rightly removed a board that was incompetent and bordered on the corrupt. That was an achievement to be proud of.
Driving out the current administration or management would be incompetent and would actually make Celtic (including us) as an object of derision.
Lets stick together in our support for a successful club, because once the support fractures into opposing factions, once hidden agendas will appear on back and front pages of the rags and our own infighting will only lead to further failure.
Criticism is valid;opinions are the lifeblood of the support; but reckless behaviour amounting to attempted suicide is not painless and should be avoided at all costs.
Hail hail

02/04/07 13:05, j-tim-bag – in his 10 seasons in top class football in The Netherlands JVOH has averaged 30 league games per season. The Dutch league is typically a 34 game competition, although the new play-off system can add 3 more games. In short – what you heard appears to be nonsense.
For the record – below is the detail (League appearances only)
2005/06 PSV 32
2004/05 PSV 28
2003/04 PSV 30
2002/03 PSV 32
2001/02 PSV 34
2000/01 FC Twente 34
1999/00 FC Twente 34
1998/99 FC Twente 34
1997/98 FC Twente 28
1996/97 FC Twente 12

Wee Shaun would have been wiser to stay another 12-18mnths with us and get 1 more good , full season under his belt. I'm sure better teams than Villa would have been in for him had he done so.
Instead he took the cash and ran at the first chance.
At least Stan signed an extension with us and we reaped the benefits of the transfer fee....I feel no malice to SP...but Maloney should have had some morale obligation (in a footballer ? ..shock..horror !) after the amount of time he spent on the injury list and we paid his wages.
Wouldn't it be ironic if Ross Wallace ends up playing in the EPL in 5 months time while SM plies his trade in the Coca-Coca? Who would have guessed at the start of the year ?
Come on the Everton !
-
Paul,
You are missing the point. I do not know anything about players' financial situations etc.
Neither do you.
But it isn't me who is telling the world what Maloney's move south means to him financially.
Or implicitly hoping that he fails.
Schadenfraude is a terrible thing.
-
Vargashampoo...
I agree what you say about McGeady but feel if we had a couple of midfielders who could run up in support of him, we'd score at least a couple of goals a game. Naka is on the other side of the park. That means that Hartley and Lennon should be trying to assist - which means it ain't going to happen. Gravesen does give us this opportunity but isn't a first team choice.
Look at Man Utd, with Giggs and now Ronaldo. They always give support to these 2 when they steam up the park. We used to do the same when Frankie MacAvennie was in the Hoops..........
-
Antibesbhoy,
That's exactly what I was thinking on Saturday. Without Petrov (or, ahem, ungrateful little money-grabber Maloney), Aiden really has no options, short of a high ball in to JVoH.
It's a shame because his game has definitely improved this year- unfortunately the team set-up around him means he is often isolated and left to do his work in harmless areas of the field.
-
Paul + Cubist Funk.
Cheers!!!
Smelled a bit o' merde when i heard it...
JTB
-
I'd like to see all players who leave on good terms do well, which leaves me a bit unsure on Petrov and Maloney - just how good were the terms?
Petrov and Maloney can recover from poor seasons and have successful careers down there or elsewhere but it's MON that worries me.
It really pains me to say this but Martin O'Neill strikes me as a manager that football has passed by. He is managing a dinosaur of a football club, even a quick glance at their strip reminds you of their 90's incarnation, John Gregory et al. His signings and his his comments would worry me greatly if I was an Aston Villa supporter. He looks like another man unable to recapture that magic of Celtic when moving on (for different reasons).
We have managed to replace him with a manager who if he secures another title and scottish cup to add to his achievements will have matched MON after 2 season. We have been fortunate to replace a highly succesful manager with (At worst) an equally succesful one. We may not be so lucky again.
Be careful what you wish for.
-
Bleedin' heck guys. That's an entire weekend of bleating about how poor the team is, how incompetent the manager is, how substandard the squad is.
Some of you ought to realise you're on the wrong club's discussion board.
Maybe we're all becoming a touch British after these too few years of success.
Listen to the England fans these days. What about the poor Rangers fans who managed to get their shiny new dream manager fired after only 6 months. Bentitez at Liverpool won the Champions League, and some fans could only say "aye, but he could only finish 5th in the EPL".
Wenger's been Arsenal's most successful manager, but he's getting it big time in the neck following the Liverpool result and the cumulative results this season.
Some seasons are better than others. Some for the quality of the football, some for the overall results, some for outstanding individuals.
This season has given us some of the best moments in my memory. Beating United at Celtic Park was such a high, there are few to compare it to. Knocking Barca out of the Uefa cup was similar but in a lesser tournament.
We are the champions, and we will remain so, provided the fans get behind the team for the long haul. All this scratching and biting only serves to diminish our collective stature as supporters.
On the toss side, sure, some of the performances have been dire. So what's new? Anyone remember getting papped out of the European Cup in the first round, 4 months after we had won it?
Anyone remember the last two games of MON's team? That'll be Motherwell and Bratislava folks.
Some of our best football in recent times was played with Moravcik and Viduka in a team that won hee haw.
Every team cycles through the performance curve. We are lucky that our team is setting new standards, in an era that promises great things, and is delivering successes, but must be patient during the inevitable blips.
Come on Bhoys, a little reality amongst our frustration please.
-
tmc,
I think the job MON had upon taking over was more difficult than the one Strachan had (although his was certainly not easy). MON will always be the man who kickstarted the modern era at Celtic, and anyone who was at the 6-2 game will confirm just how much of a horizon opened up to us over the course of that ninety minutes.
But his weaknesses were also apparent at Celtic- an unwillingness to change tactics or set-ups, a fanatical loyalty to one or two players, no matter their form, a distrust of unorthodox players, and a football world-view that seemed to prize the EPL above any other transfer market.
In Scotland his success was built upon instilling a strength of character in good, solid, professional players. In the EPL you need a wee bit more than that.
I hope he does well, but I agree that perhaps Celtic will ultimately be seen as the high water mark of his career.
-
I find the attitude of some posters bewildering.
Why would anyone want any of our departed players such as Petrov or Maloney to do badly?
Surely part of the club's business plan is to buy low sell high.
If our premium rate players can't cut the mustard at a higher level no one else is going to come in and pay big money for the next generation of Celtic Park stars.
The Scottish game lacks credibility in England and this has been further exacerbated by Souness lining R@ngers pockets for haddies like Boumsong & Amoruso and duds like Ehiogu being practically chased out of Leeds only to star at FC Wee Team.
There is a danger than MON @ Villa could be seen in the same light as Sewerness at Newcastle.
The English game is now awash with cash. It would be a great pity if EPL clubs felt comfortable spending £7-8 million on Championship players, but were unwilling to splash out on ours.
So good luck Shaun & Stilian - but not because I like you.
-
To 13.53 battered bunnet MON was not the manager against Bratislavia. WGS thought they were a pub team before the first leg.
-
Italiabhoy,
spot on with your last post.
Paul67.
your obvious tactic of changing threads and topic once anything that you consider to be overly critical of Celtic has happened far to often now to be a coincidence. By adopting this tactic you are guilty of protecting Celtic (a good thing) but it also leaves you open to accusations of "lazy journalism" (surely a bad thing)
As Celtic fans we should be showing magnaminity with regards any ex Celtic employees a few notable exceptions agreed but on the whole displaying schadenfreude towards one of our own youth products is behaviour that I would not want to associate with Celtic.
Is PL smart enough to have got a sell on clause written into SM & SP contract ? If so should we be wishing them the best ? If he were to go on and play regularly for Villa wouldn´t our youth players sit up and take notice and think that Tommy Burns and Co. know what they are talking about ?
------------------------------
Celtic have a problem. The problems that I see are
Marquee signings
----------------
1) Why has Jarosik never started in his preferred position ?
2) Why has TG not set the heather alight ?
3) Why is JVOH always injured ?
Square pegs round holes
-----------------------
1) Why Caldwell and not Telfer start at RB (even instead of a youth player)
2) Why Jarosik in every other position but his own ?
3) Hartley as the holding midfield player ?
4) What is TG´s position as far as you are concerned ?
5) Was Doumbe bought in just to balance the sqaud for practice sessions ?
Misfiring strikers
------------------
1) Magic looked well up for it having scored in mid - week. which upset me a litte, no problem with his attitude for that game Why did he not start ?
2) Beattie, Miller poor poor first touch and it doesn´t look to be getting better - why ?
3) Riordhan´s stats are pretty good. Why is he not getting pitched in ?
4) With the addition of Mc Donald that leaves us with 6 strikers. 5 of whom cannot score at the moment and the one that can is not even in the dressing room yet. Why ? please make this a 500 word essay answer ?
Additionally I think if we have CL aspirations then it´s a mistake to play Mc Geady and Naka at the same time´. It makes the midfield too lightweight and with an ageing Lenny & a 31 year old Hartley it puts far too much pressure on the defence
I do believe that WGS is either being influenced by non footballing reasons into acquiring some of the players that we have all to easily and next to home and on the cheap acquired. Which is causing him problems. I also reckon that our new performance related pay scheme introduces a loyalty verus experimentation conundrum. Loyalty is the most important aspect of the modern game after fitness and ability.
I dont reckon that all the problems with Celtic´s inability this year to even occasionally hit the heights of the Benfica at home performance as being all WGS fault. He is doing a great job taking all the flak on his shoulders and protecting his players and his board while getting ridiculous amount of flak from a frustrated support that expected the title to be wrapped up a month ago but have yet to see a goal scored from open play in that month. Quite simply unacceptable and WGS admirable protection of the club does him no favours with the support. He might not be that bothered about that aspect but when push comes to shove then the people that he is protecting will be doing the shoving due to a support that is undertsandably growing frustrated about a lack of quality that can´t even muster a goal against poor opposition.
Team 3 (which is a joke in itself imho) needs to include Naka, Boruc, Naylor, JVOH and players of the supposed quality of Jarosik, Graveson and Zurawski from the offset or we will already be going backwards.
I fully expect Summer No 4 to echo team number 3 and you all know what I mean. If that is the case then we should be increasing WGS pay packet by 100% especially if he can manage 2nd phase football again. He would if he was working in any other buisness.
-
Raw nerve touched!!!
WGS is doing a fine job as anybody will tell you, so we just have to be malcontent to win/draw/lose to bucket teams whilst playing rubbish.
-
Cubist @ 1330hrs,
Interested to know where you got your stats re JVoH from please mate. I ask because I did a similar search on Global Football Databse and whilst the Twente stats tally, the PSV differ.
I will paste what I have below, would be good to know for comparison as I am a bit of an anorak when it comes to football stats and any points of reference are handy. (I should point out I didn't use Wikipedia as it is far to easy to manipulate as is well known!).
JAN VENNEGOOR OF HESSELINK CAREER STATS

1997/98 FC Twente 28 4

All this frustration is easily understandable,
Black Sunday - yes Gordon we know you weren't the manager - is still a recent memory,
On Saturday from about midway thru the 2cnd half we lost the midfield battle,
Hartley was out on his feet having had to do the work of two midfielders,
Neil Lennon was posted missing from the kick off,
Wee Aiden was out on his feet having put in a good shift for over an hour,
We all saw Tommy G and D Riordan directly behind GS,
When would he bring them on and which 2 out of the 3 would he bring off?
We could all see the equalizer coming,
Come on Gordon do something,
He done nothing and the only surprising thing about the equalizer was it came so late,
Failure to make the necessary changes when we lost the midfield cost us 2 points,
I'd love to know why he didn't make the changes. Very frustrating.
-
If CQN was a newspaper :-}
Maloney’s situation at Villa would merit a paragraph at the bottom of Page 15.
Why Riordan is not playing would be a front page headline.
-
on the point that magic looked well up for it? yer havin a laugh eh? he was summed up when he stopped just as JVOH squared the ball across the 6 yard box every striker worth his salt would head for the line anticipating the ball coming across!
beattie miller and zurawski aren't good enough for celtic as thier goal tally proves
worst strikers we've seen for many a year at celtic and the three of them should be moved on
-
This is quite lazy journalism from you Paul. While I think Maloney has made the wrong choice in moving to Villa I don't think you can use his lack of appearances so far as evidence that he has failed. For a start he has missed the last few games through injury, including the Arsenal game. He has been suffering from an illness. He is over it now and is likely to be playing to tonight. Let's not forget he moved to Villa after missing pretty much the whole season anyway so it will take him a little while to get up to speed.
-
Antibesbhoy & Italiabhoy - spot on.
We have McGeady isolated on the left with only JVOH to hit with a forward pass. His other options are:
(1)give it to Beattie/Miller & watch them run with the ball, take it out the stadium & down London Road
(2)make a square pass to Lennon/Hartley/Sno & so the cycle continues of having plenty of possession with no penetration in the final third.
Exactly the same scenario is happening to Nakamura on the right hand side.
Other than set pieces, the only time we look like scoring is when the two wide men Nakamura/McGeady get into central positions with the full backs outside them & JVOH/Zurawski in close proximity.
Other than that we're not going to score
-
brinalackbhoy,
I´m not confused. You are. I was talking baout the mid week Poland game.JVOH playing for them too now ?
-
Tokentim -
The reason your stats differ from Cubist's is that they are for games that JVoH started, whereas CF's include games where he came on as a sub.
His rate of absence through injury is actually very low...
-
aw naw
my point is he's mince
enough said

Bri
Celtic line up Vs Artmedia
Marshall
Telfer, Balde, Varga, Camara
Petrov, Lennon, Sutton, Thompson
Hartson, Zurawski
That'll be 2 full backs and a forward not signed by MON

I have stated here in the past that whenever some critical or contentious postings appear then a new thread is posted. I was told I was imagining things.
I have deliberately not posted for quite a few weeks as I am normally shot down whenever I raise questions about Gordon and the ongoing development of the team.
It seems that quite a number have now woke up and smelt the coffee.
I got tired of bleating about the same old things.
1. Gordon stating that there are problems and that he will fix them.
2. Starting games badly/wrong team etc.
3. One of our true quality players with vision - Jarosik being played everywhere but central midfield.
4.Gordon's favourite players walking into the team no matter how badly they play. By the way I accept that Martin had his favourites but at least they were damn good favourites.
5. I will again state that GS is not big enough to manage our club because he lives in the shadow of Neil Lennon. Neil has been a great and loyal servant but now slows up up our play and is basically a fifth defender. Gordon Strachan will not drop him and IF NEIL DECIDES to stay another year then he will and remain the first name on the teamsheet next season again.
I have yet to see any inkling that this team will be faster/fitter etc.
What worries me is that this season so far I have chose not to attend at least three games and I will also miss Saturday's match against Motherwell through choice. I am not the only supporter who feels this way take a look around you at a lot of matches this season. The quality of football is dire and will continue to be so until the end of the season because Gordon will stick by his favourites.
So I cant be criticised of not offering any solutions as an ex-player here is my team for the remainder of the season.
Boruc
Telfer
O'Dea
Pressley (Balde if fit)
Naylor
Nakamura
Gravesen
Jarosik
Hartley
JVOH
Zurawski
I believe the goals would start to flow once again.
-
02/04/07 14:11, TheTokenTim - I use www.footballdatabase.com & try to corroborate the stats from another source. In this case I used the FC Twente stats dbase as cross-reference for JVOH’s time there – games played & goals scored were identical to footballdatabase. Unfortunately I can’t find anything similar on the PSV website & haven’t turned up anything else yet.
Hoopla - thanks for further clarification

brinalackbhoy,
My point was that he wasn´t mince for Poland ? Scored a cracker. Was captain and was putting it about. Completely healthy and brave. Why the difference? He wasn´t mince last season? You dont become a bad player overnight. I thought that he was going to be JVOH´s partner. I´d be more interested to see statistic associated with JVOH and Zurawski playing together at Celtic. On paper they should be ideal for one another. WHy not ?
-
At 02/04/07 12:42, Tom the Tim said…
re the appearance fees tom, at the moment a helluva lot of players arent earning them, regardless if they contributed to a 19 point lead.
As a fan couldnt care less about players and money, i dont look at wage bill before commenting on a performance, i look at the performance, i think the opposite, if it is appearance based then they should be bursting a gut to ensure they not get dropped rather than have the attitude i helped us get 19 points clear so i play every week.
if your not delivering you lose your place, its the only way to work it, regardless of appearance money which frankly is irrelevant.
Frank from Bedlington, the rise in the number of empty seats probably has a lot to to with tepid, turgid performances for an alarmingly long period of time now, with the league seemingly in the bag, only entertainment will force some fans to their seats, entertainment not on show at parkhead, arguably most of the season.
We're maybe victims of out own success and on black sunday would have bitten your hand off for 2 in a row, its just this is celtic and I want to see some football too.

aw naw
have you considered the fact poland were playing the european giants that are armenia?
not exactly world beaters are they?
not hard to score against either i'd wager

inthedark,
The thread changes by PAUL67 are definitely strategically chosen. I could post numerous well argued and hard hitting posts of mine where the thread changes. If I am pushed to do so I will post the URL´s where it happened. Far too often for it to be coincidence. It definitely detracts from the blog. It is however his blog but we hav eall been there when the kid with the decent Mitre ball takes the hump and heads off home leaving you with the lightweight woolworth ballon to play around with.

TBB-Stan was signed by Mr Barnes.
Stan is playing for Villa,as is wee Shaun and MON is the manager.
I wish them all well, not least because they gave so much to Celtic for so long;the manner of their departure saddens me.
Last season Naka's best play was when SM was in the team;they played together only rarely this season but did so against Benfica-result 45 mins of'Glasgow Celtic'football.
MZ best moments last year[the game at Ibrox]came when he was playing alongside John Verylarge of Hartson.
The goal that knocked us out this season in Milan was a great goal;the only player we have had in recent years capable of doing anything similar was the Shaunaldinho of last year-power,pace,skill-all things sadly missing from the dross we are being served up this year.
-
Zurawski stopped unmarked 8 yards out expecting a cut back from JVofH and a simple tap in.
It was JVOfH's poor play not Zurawski's lack of bravery that caused that chance to go a begging.
-
Brinalackbhoy,
Armenia against Dundee Utd. ? I know who my money would be on
-
aw naw
sorry you're right zurawski a top notch striker and we're lucky to have such a free scoring player in our team
i look forward to seeing armenia take on europes cream of the crop next year aswell
-
very intetesting point made about the real madrid post del bosque era.
i think there are parallels with us. i am NOT happy with out play this season and am NOT happy with some of strachans decisions.in short i am not his biggest fan, however i agree that success must come first worry about how we get it second. however in the stale SPL if we keep playing the way we do then perhaps people will keep supporting but stop attending. i certainly don't feel i have got my £500 season ticket plus everything else worth this season from what i have watched.
in short until strachan does not deliver success he can only be criticised so much, if the success stopped tho he would be afforded very little patience. perhaps some media training and some dvd's of arsenal or barca playing would go a long way to helping strachan out. even a talk on treating all as equals as well
-
Brinalackbhoy,
Poland only managed to beat them 1.0 in Poland. Would Scotland or England, Ireland or Dundee utd fair any better.
When your watching Armenia taking on the cream of Europe do you think Mourinhio is considering a move to the Arabs to enusre he wins the CL again ?
-
The stats on JVOH over his career is interesting can someone do the same for Zurawski ?

Italiabhoy/TMC
Some interesting comments on how the premiership may have moved faster than certain manages thinking. The following is from a Times article entitled......Faster, Fitter, Stronger...
"ProZone has just completed the analysis of the 2005-06 Premiership season and the data is as eye-popping as one of Gerrard’s box-to-box bursts. The average distance covered by players in matches has changed little in the last four seasons but the amount done at top speed has almost doubled. What ProZone class as “high-intensity activities” — runs made by players at three-quarters of sprint pace or faster — have increased from 627 per team per match in 2002-03 to 1,209 in 2005-06, and the ground covered by players while sprinting has increased by 40% over four years. A sprint is classed as a run made at quicker than seven metres per second, equivalent to running 100m in a sharp 14 seconds."
Could it be that the advantage of work rate that were the hallmarks of MoN's Leicester and Celtic sides has been competed away by more competent rivals in recent years?

13:11, Frank from Bedlington
Frank, I agree with your comments.
My main concern at the present is not when we will win the League but the manner in which it is won. I'm beginning to hear too many Celtic supporters talk about not renewing their season tickets. There are certainly many at present not bothering to use their tickets.
Give me my football back please.

Can I marry you? It would be wonderful being married to someone whose views I totally agree with. (Talking about Celtic's problems)

a fit magic is the best striker at the club by a distance.

Paul, before I knock myself out. I guess I was trying to state what 'in the dark' and 'awe naw'(excellents posts folks) have done so well. Change direction when all is not well? I actually thought you were being cute.
We are wallowing and bleating because we believe there is a problem, and this is a discussion thread is it not? So why can't we discuss the current situation?
Wether you (or other regular posters)think the people contributing are talking rubbish or being to critical is irrelavnt.
Could it not be, that from the number of 1st time and infrequent posters that seem to have expressed their view in the last few threads, means this is a hot topic..and everyone has a view on it.
One thing that you can't ignore is that the number of customers/fans getting more disillusioned with the manager and team performances is increasing rapidly.
PS..Neil Lennon was already in MON's team so no need to include
-
GreatNo8,
Very interesting. I would agree that the EPL has become a more physical and less skillful league over the years. Teams are all now full of fit, committed players, but many are dull to watch.
IMHO, the best years in the EPL weere 93-97. This is when skill still held the advantage brawn in most sides (even those in the bottom three).
-
MGM78-Is that the same level of achievement as being voted the best looking girl in Lochgelly?
-
I would like to see Jan and Magic partner each other untill the end of the season. Magic has always been a player that takes a few games to get going and he hasn't had that this season. I would play him just for the fact that he is more likely to keep possession rather than Miller and Beattie, the latter especially loses a lot of the ball. Magic will rarely turn a game by himself but if the ball is given to him in the box you feel confident he can put it in the net.
The lack of space he gets from the Scottish defences does cause a problem but that's why we need more men getting in the box from midfield which would allow our strikers much more room and cause panic.
Magic is the best of the three so instead of chopping and changing all the time we might as well just stick to him to partner Jan. Let's hope we've seen the last of Jan's injuries also.
-
I can remember a time when I used to record highlights of the Celtic game and then watch it a couple of times before the next game came along. The last time I did that was against Man U in November, nothing since then has been worth recording, all of it dire.
BTW, as for paul changing the thread as some sort of devious tactic - what a load of cobblers - as long as we keep it clean he lets us post whatever we want - whether its related or not.
-
At 02/04/07 15:21, dontbrattbackinanger, yeah it wasnt meant as a backhanded compliment but suppose it is, like most intelligent in the govan stand!!
For all those conspiracy theorists out there, how does a new article and thread stop you giving your opinion on what you write about?
I dont think the intention ever is to solely focus on what paul has written and only comment on that and from what im reading everyone is contributing on the topic they want to contribute on. A while ago Paul was being criticised for not posting enough threads and the threads being too long (800 posts), it would seem that sometimes you just cant win.
-
Hoopla/Cubist,
Thanks for the info.
I also try to get confirmation from other sources if possible - as any researcher worth his salt should - the problem lies in knowing which sources are most reliable.
Incidentally I should point out that at no point was I agreeing with the JVoH injury-plagued theory, I was going to post the stats to point out the opposite!
I actually do quite a lot of business in The Netherlands and have spoken to quite a few PSV and Twente fans who have all expressed their surprise at how often he has been out injured. They also expressed some surprise with how quickly he has appeared to become a cult figure with us, i.e. the Celtic fans, so quickly when he has not played that often (they based this upon the odd Dutch TV/newspaper reports which seemed to corroborate this).
Cheers

GrNo8-given that Steve Mclaren is Prozone's most famous advocate perhaps a fair amount of Saxo needs to be put on the significance of their findings`¬)
-
Just a point on JVofH's injury record this season, he has spoken of his frustration as it is the first time it has ever happened to him. He played 4 consecutive seasons for Twente without ever being injured. He attributes it to two things, not preparing for the season ahead in Scotland and his appearance at the world cup meaning no close season for the first time in his career. The reasons for his transfer from PSV were clear and transparently listed in a feature article in the Sunday Herald yesterday. Namely, PSV have a clear policy of rotating their squad based around a maximum stay of approx 3 years.
A common theme throughout Europe this season has been post world cup blues:
Thierry Henry
Andrea Pirlo
Ronaldinho
Shevcheno
Ballack
Deco
Lampard
Are just some of the players who have complained of the world cup affecting their season.
-
Awe Naw, I was criticised for being too harsh with my criticism on Saturday and now you think find it necessary to come on and criticise me for talking about something different.
No idea what gives you the right to tell me what to talk about, with very few exceptions I make no such limitations on you.
I cannot win with some people.
You may well be frustrated that we are not going to win the league by an excess of 20 points, or by the manner in which we will do so, but taking pot shots at me does you no favours.
Andybhoy1967, whenever I am available, I try to post a new article each day, usually at the same time. This is not always easy; as sometimes I have to reach for material, but I spend time doing so to provide a platform for people to have a debate.
I ask for limits to be placed on politics and language, but apart from this, the platform is provided freely.
At no point did I say you “can't we discuss the current situation”, in fact I specifically invited you to do so.
I don’t know if we have ever had a one-on-one debate before, or if somehow I have wronged you in another place, but how can you read my clear invite for you to continue your debate as the exact opposite?
I even engaged you in the debate you wanted to have, though you have not responded. Here it is in case you missed it:
"You might not rate our manager, you might have believed all along that he would win the league last season, be 13 points ahead this season, get to the knock out stage of the Champions League and take Milan to extra time when he got there….
…. but still not rate him.
But what would he know?"
Running a successful Celtic blog is easy, just ask anyone who has never done it.
-
I don't really buy into this talk that we have only played one good game this season (the Benfica home game). I felt from the Hearts game, were Jiri scored an absolute peach to the Milan game, I felt we did great; The first half against Rangers was brilliant as well. One of the highlights of that period was beating St Mirren 5-1 as well. I admit second half against Rangers until now we've been poor but I think a good performance against Motherwell will raise everyone's spirits and beating St. Johnstone to go into the final will also cheer everyone up.
I think generally we've played well this season, without really killings teams off enough for my liking. There has been spells when our football has been sublime, and some of the goals scored as well has been superb.
A lot of these one nil wins would have been more if we had clinical strikers at the club, especially if Jan was fit throughout the season, and I think if we had took more chances throughout the season everyone would be praising how good the football has been instead of moaning.
It just shows how important it is that Strachan finds a good striker in the transfer market over the summer.
-
Nuclearfalloutbhoy,
changing the thread normally means that the last posts on that thread dont get as much exposure.
As I say if pushed I will spend the time to point out in the past when this has been done. It would take me quite a long time to do so and I am of the opinion that Paul67 can change it when he wants to. I am also of the opinion that he does this strategically.
Additionally I live my the axiom that just because your labelled paranoid it doesn´t mean that they are not out to get you. Any good tim will know what I´m on about.
-
If one of your best player's was leaving in the summer, you would do your best to try and persuade him to stay, wouldn't you?
Petrov and Maloney would testify to this after months of contract talks ensuring that they would choose to stay at Celtic rather than moving else where, for what ever reason.
Both, however left, to the detriment of the team some might say.
Now we have a player who is CONSISTENTLY one of our best performers, has a fitness level above all others in the team, can pass(forward too) cross and tackle.
His presence vastly improves the shape of the team, as well as the performance of those around him.
He is by far the best player we have for his position and those who have tried to deputise when he has been unavailable have struggled badly to raise their game to his level.
However, he is leaving in the summer. Do we have a replacement lined up? Will someone else step up to the plate? Who knows?
Just somebody tell me, please, why PAUL TELFER will be allowed to walk out the front door come the end of the season?

Cmon m8! i enjoy yer posts but surely this is self importance on overdrive? Do you see yourself as some red clydesider dangerous anarchistic poster here who is going to bring down the establishment?
Ok, thats a real dig in the ribs, why dont you repost your point in the page now and the debate can carry on?
Surely P67 can change his page when he wants ?
I would guess maybe that Bandwidth could be an issue for p67, the nature of the blogging phenomenon means numerous refreshes of the same page, the page gets bigger each post and can lead to fairly substancial bandwidth costs - new article - and you start with a smaller page size - less bandwidth cost. maybes ?
-
Paul,
believe it or not I enjoy reading this blog and your threads each day,(or when I can). And no, you haven't wronged me in a different place. I have no idea why you said that.
Your right, you didn't say "we can't discuss the current situation" However you did say that you didn't want "wallowing/bleating on about it" slight inference there I think.
Anyway a will do my sheep impressions quietly and just go back to reading instead of contributing, don't want you getting the wrong impression of me.
-
I dont know why some posters are having a dig at Paul, it's right out of order.
He's given us a forum here to discuss all things Celtic without the idiots with other agendas turning it into a polticial debate, so lets appreciate that.
I'm as pissed off with the way the Hoops are playing as anyone, and by some of WGS decisions this season, but bottom line if you'd have been asked in August to be in our position you'd have jumped at it, end of story.
I think our players are in end of season mode, same as last year's run in.
Only difference then was we'd alreeady won the League before our form dipped, whereas this year we've yet to clinch it.
I agree it's wrong for the players to be in this frame of mind before winning anything, especially with the Scottish Cup still up for grabs too, but let's hope the manager, whom I think has done a great job, kicks them up the backside and gets them fighting again.
I'm sure he will, so let's look on the bright side.
13 points lead with six games left and semi-final of the cup!
It aint half bad is it???
-
good point well made in relation to Maloney....he snubbed us , whether it was for a little more money or a lot more money , i don't know......In general i like to wish ex-celts well in their new place of work...kenny mcdowell being an obvious exception....i wish for nothing but success for MON and right now i'd rather have £6.5 million than Petrov, as long as we spend it wisely....i however wish Stan well, he was a very good player for us and a financial success....
...Maloney however is the type of player who turns supporters against players, and ultimately causes people to fall out of love with football.....He leaves a very bitter taste in the mouth, an ungrateful individual who led the club and it's support up the garden path until the 23rd hour......we are well shot of his character or lack of it......
two quotations spring to mind when contemplating Maloney..
the first is from the Duc de La Rouchefoucald ..
"Weakness of character is the only defect that cannot be amended"
and the second from Albert Einstein...
"Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character"
In the week when John Arne Riise was declared bankrupt, Maloney may care to ponder that when the money is gone you still have to look yourself in the mirror every morning..
-
I suspect a lot of guys' nerves are a bit shot at the moment.
GS gets well paid for getting it in the neck, deservedly or not. So too do all the players.
Paul gets nothing for this site. We all have our opinions. If Ian Paisley and Martin McGuiness can be civil to each other, can we not?
-
Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo
AS IT SAYS GS IS GAMES STARTED, G IS GOALS.
ON A VERY QUICK COUNT RECORD FOR CELTIC AND WISLA IN EUROPE ONLY APPEARS BETTER THAN A GOAL TO EVERY 2 STARTS
-
Awe- Naw,
good questions :
I also have a couple to add.
Generally I have supported WGS but now I am getting worried.
1. Why sign players and never give them a chance to establish themselves. Riordan and Doumbee
2. Zurawski - everyone is on his case this year - but let's think back.
He really was Magic last year 20+ goals , but was dropped for Kenny Miller. A player who just doesn't get 10 goals a season. When Magic joined he got off to a slow start , then scored aplenty. Got injured ( Hamstring against England), came back slowly and then started scoring again. Anyone with 2 brain cells could see that Magic needs to play and is a confidence striker. WGS removed that confidence - now he is unfairly lumped with the non-scoring strikers.
3.Lenny. So Lenny and Tommy G don't work, Lenny and Jiri ? ( nope ), Lenny and Hartley ( nope ), Lenny and Sno ( nope ). One constant in that equation - Lenny.
The problem is that there is so much "Stuff" going on around Lenny that he is a sideshow. Imagine the Rankers fans if WGS had taken him off in the last OF game when we needed to chase a goal.
We really need a drastic rethink to the centre midfield. If I was a opposing manager I would double team the wide two and not worry about the centre.
4. Why play players on the wrong side. We have now totally removed the byeline as an option. Don't you think that other teams know that and narrow the game against us. Get to the line and watch JVOH score a lot more headers. Switch the wide men Gordon.
Gary Caldwell right back - really was a nonsense and unfair on the player.
Saturday was utterly predictable the minute the team was read out.
As for Motherwell - Gordon you are paid a lot of money to make tough decisions - please start making them.
And one last rant.
The singing of Sebo ,Sebo was a laugh once - but now it is turning on ourselves. From what I see from our strikers the rankers fans would be justified in replying with any of their names - let's focus on Celtic and leave the focus of the other half to the less enlightened.
Seville67

Can't agree with you Paul. Maloney moved away not just for a we bit more money but for the chance to play against some of the top players in the world. We have to accept that no matter how big a brand Celtic is, it plays in a league that at best is third rate. I would never blame a player for wanting to try his luck against better teams. He might not win the championship every season but he will only improve as a player and if he continues to develop he will undoubtedly end up at a far bigger club then Aston Villa
-
TO ME MALONEY IS DIFFERENT FROM STAN
MALONEY WAS WELL LOOKED AFTER BY THE CLUB GIVEN NEW DEALS AND BACKED THROUGH A SUCCESSION OF SERIOUS INJURIES.
HE REPAID US WITH ONE GOOD SEASON AND A SLAP IN THE FACE OF REFUSING A NEW DEAL
AT LEAST STAN SIGNED IT TO ENSURE WE GOT A FAIR PRICE EVEN IF HE ALWAYS INTENDED TO LEAVE
INTERESTING NONE ARE DOING WELL, AND IF WE HAVE ASPIRATIUONS TO GET TO SAY CL 1/4 FINALS IF THESE GUYS CAN'T DO IT AGAINST LOW ORDER PREM CLUBS WHY SHOULD WE THINK THE COULD IN THE CL?
-
CarfinGerry.
I think many players have left us in the past and then went on to obscurity… I think we should highlight this fact any chance we get and point out the players who have done just that as examples. Maloney’s not playing against the cream, he’s sitting on the bench, and he’s not the only one who may find a move away from Celtic is usually a move down. If there are any players thinking of leaving us then maybe they’ll think twice.

Paul Telfer leaves Celtic
Newsroom Staff
DEFENDER Paul Telfer has left Celtic for family reasons. The 35-year-old, who played his last game for the Hoops against AC Milan in the San Siro Stadium, had been struggling with a groin injury in recent weeks and didn’t feature in Celtic’s three most recent league matches.
A Celtic spokesperson said: “It is with great regret that Celtic FC have announced today that Paul Telfer has ended his contract with Celtic for family reasons. He has now decided to return to England to be with his family.
“Celtic have reluctantly accepted Paul’s decision and we fully respect his request to end his contract with the Club. Clearly, everyone at the Club wishes Paul and his family all the very best for the future.”
Paul Telfer signed for Celtic in July 2005 from Southampton and helped the Hoops to win the SPL title and the League Cup in his first season at the club. He has also played his part in this season’s campaign, as the Hoops bid to retain the title.
He made a total of 73 appearances for the club, scoring one goal.

seville 67 i think you made a series of points i agree with however on point no 4 what i would say is
perhaps its so they can cut inside and shoot, cut inside take the man and allow the full back in, or cutt inside and be on their good foot to make passes how many times has naka cut in and played a killer pass?
the question is do these outweigh the positives of players playing on their "right" side?
-
sean south
Statistical information is all well and good but I'm getting a bit fed up with all these researchers polling me about Celtic blog forums every week at Luton CSC.....
cta!
-
Ants,
I understand what you are saying - and would agree if we played with overlapping fullbacks.
So why play a centre half at right back when a natural fullback is fast becoming the invisible man of Celtic Park.
That option is removed by the choice of fullback.
-
SEVILLE67
totally agree caldwell seems to be in the "club" with a few others
BREAKING NEWS
Celtic defender Paul Telfer has left the Glasgow club to return to England for family reasons.
The 35-year-old full-back, who is in his second season at Celtic, had intended to return to his family home in Winchester in the summer.
But on Mondy his contract was cancelled by mutual consent and the club thanked Telfer for his services.
It is unclear whether Telfer will quit the game completely when he returns to the south of England.
Telfer signed for Celtic in July 2005 and made his first appearance for the club in a Champions League qualifier when Gordon Strachan's new charges lost 5-0 to Artmedia Petrzalka in Slovakia.
Despite a slow start to his career in Glasgow, Telfer managed to hold down a regular slot in Strachan's starting 11, picking up a League Cup winner's medal and a league winner's medal last season.
Telfer revealed in December that his family had failed to settle in Glasgow and preferred to stay in England.
At the time, he said: "I will leave because it's not ideal being away from my family and I went a month without seeing my son.
"He has just started school so doesn't really appreciate what his dad has up in Scotland.
"He's more interested in Scooby Doo than football.
"If I stop playing, I'm not sure what I'll do - but not coaching."
-
A mighty fine goal against the Hibees it was as well. Best wishes with the future to Paul, he's deserved our respect. Not as a Celtic legend but as a player who played through abuse only to not hide and put in solid reliable performances week after week
-
Sorry to hear about Telfer. I was hoping he would stay around to get the send off he deserves after the abuse that he took earlier in his Celtic career. Definitely one of my top 5 players for this season.
Good luck Paul I hope the inferred family problems are not too serious. Hope you can come back for the title party.

Is there not enough to talk and debate regarding Celtic's problems of late without a less-than-subtle switch to the misfortunes that have beset Martin O'Neill and Shaun Maloney?
If I wanted to discuss Aston Villa I would do it on a Villains site.
Is it any wonder some Celtic fans are now increasingly looking beyond CQN for intelligent, open debate that doesn't appear to have a pro-Celtic news management agenda?
Paul can write about whatever he wants , change the thread whenever he wants but I fear his past success with this blog will be hard to keep going with threads about past employees and clubs in which we have little or no interest.
Sorry Paul, but a thread primarily about Aston Villa is without doubt a new low in the recent decline of CQN.

Maloney !
My Schaudenfreude hopes he sinks, but for that to happen he would have to take MON and Stan with him, so I hope Villa stay up for their 2 sakes.
On Gordon Strachan. I have stood up for him time and time again.
Now I am getting worried. Why is Jarosik rarely played in his best position. Why after scoring 5 with Sno and Tommy G in the midfield do we go back to static square passing?
Why is P Hartley not being allowed to do what he is good at?
I wish I knew what was going on in the wee mans heid, I am sure it makes sense to him, I wish it made sense to me.

Sean South, Maybe you're missing the point. Re the current topic. We should be shouting as loud as possible that leaving Celtic is not usually a good career move, more often than not it a move down.
Also you seem to think there is something wrong for having a pro Celtic stance... I have no problem with it, you on the other hand seem to have a very negative stance on Celtic al a Not the view pre McCann? Those days are gone. No need to fight for the club anymore.

I think there are enough good things going on at CP to have some optimism? Don’t you?

you're probably right, either way it was a lovely strike. I'm surprised he didn't score a couple more for us. He's got a sweet right peg when shooting.

maybe he can leave his right peg for one of our strikers as a goodbye pressy.

I do want all the players that leave Celtic to go on to continue their successful careers. Teams will be unlikely to spend 6m on players from Scotland when players like Fat Bazza and Stan struggle when they go down there.
I would quite like to see some players go onto the continent. I would have been happier if Maloney went to Bayern Munich rather than villa just because it will raise our profile abroad and it would be better for the national team. That's just me though,
-
Good luck to the Telfmeister! I think that he was winning his critics round. Hopefully the Bhoys will do the double for him and us!
-
AndyBhoy, I didn’t say that I did not want wallowing or bleating, I said “I was clear in my criticisms of the team on Saturday and chose to write about a different subject today instead of wallowing/bleating on about the same thing”.
I can only say so much about the state of the team at the moment and I was crystal clear on my thoughts immediately after the game on Saturday. I actually went out of my way to post my thoughts after the match much earlier than usual as I thought it was an occasions that deserved as much.
I get a bit tired of the accusation that I try to inhibit debate when I think I do more to encourage it than any other Celtic fan.
My apologies if I have picked on you today and thanks for letting me know I have not wronged you elsewhere. I enjoy honest debate; it is the best way to learn.
There are others who are transparent in their hostility as they never miss a chance to put a dig in, but that is the vagaries of human nature I suppose.

You could give Miller Ronaldinho's legs but it wouldn't do him any good because he spends more time running out the stadium than getting into the box to use them. At least it would mean the few times he does get into positions would not result in him tripping over the ball

bit of harsh crowd today, maybe the threads should always be about celtic but there are often mentions of other teams on this blog, quite often during a celtic game someone will tell you a score from another game (which frankly i couldnt care about) and i dont remember anyone berating them telling them its only celtic scores on this blog.
write what you want and scroll by what you dont want to read until you find something you want to debate about.
Can anyone enlighten me on incident at end of game with King Artur and some celtic supporter and his burd? Did Artur claim him?

Sad to see Telfer go at this stage, still a wee bit of work to be done but some things come before football.
Would have been good to see him at the club 10 years ago, and to be fair he has done a solid enough job since he came into the side - not a lot of pace but always gave his all and read the game better than most of the current defence.
Glad he got the chance to play for his heroes and pick up a few winners medals.
Interesting Telfer Fact No.1: Paul is former Dundee Utd midfielder Eammon Bannon's nephew.

The three most high-profile departures from SPL to EPL (Bazza, Boumsong, Petrov), have cost English clubs a total of 19million pounds.
That's a lot of schcadool.
It is certainly not in our interests for these players to fail there, as that reinforces the overwhelmingly negative view of our game in England. It also makes it much, much less likely that we will be able to offload players to EPL clubs for decent cash.
Whilst it is comforting to wish failure upon those who have rejected us, it does not strike me as sound business practice.
-
aul67
you set the debate so why can I not express an opinion on the material that you present and the timing of it ? I think I have hit a raw nerve as please believe me it has nothing to do with my frustrations at Celtic´s recent form if that was th e case my funeral would have been circa 96. I hope you dont include me as one of those that always feels the need to have a dig. Yes It´s an excellent blog. Yes you do more for debate than any other supporter. It does not make you exempt from other bloggers criticising your stance or an article they are only expressing their opinion.
No Bread No cakes,
I stick to what I said about the thread changing when Paul67 wants to change it. Please accept me as I am if I reckon that Paul67 changes in thread are strategically performed to deflect and retard debate on Celtic that is seen by some as being detrimental to the club.

Just read the news about Paul Telfer. He has my best wishes. I just wish he had been able to perform for the rest of the season. Thank you, Paul, for what you gave to the Club.
He leaces us for the right, if saddest, reason. I wouldn't quibble with anyone going, especially to the EPL. The best players in the world want to be there. I know it's about money too but the likes of Kenny Dalglish went to prove themselves in a better league. I hope Stan and Maloney do so too. In Maloney's case, I do think he ought to have signed another contract to thank us for standing by him through his injuries. Still, he is a good footballer and we could have benefitted from his skills this season especially.

Real problems posting since a week-. I get a 1 in 3 success rate!!!

Well done Paul Telfer thanks and good luck.

Garbhoy:I agree that the grass on the other side often appears greener but the time to make that point was when Petrov and Maloney were still at Celtic Park.
Gloating about their present misfortune at Villa isn't going to change anything. Once they have left Paradise they are history as far as I am concerned.
Yes, there are many thing that I can give this board credit for and you list most of them.
But I want Celtic to keep progressing as a football club and I am not simply satisfied with winning the title or finishing above Rangers every season.
My constructive criticism of the club may be seen as negative by people like yourself, but I can assure that I am 100 per cent devoted to Celtic and want us to measure our future success on a global scale rather than simply against a Scottish dimension.
Those targets may be overly high- just as my ambitions for the level of debate on CQN may also be- but I genuinely believe that this club has the potential to be a huge player on the world stage albeit some years into the future.
And I have to say that the third-rate dross that we served up at Falkirk and Dundee United in recent weeks, the signing of journeymen such as Kenny Miller and Scott McDonald and the worrying performance of our manager in recent matches is what should most concern Celtic fans rather than the diversion that is Aston Villa and this totally irrelevant thread.

I dont want to get into a tet-la-tet with Paul67.I might get banned from CQN like the day I was marched out of Parkhead along with the two guys I was complaining about :-) Ahhh the Celtic Way !!! :-)
Maybe a search facility within CQN would make such a thing easier to determine.
Maybe Paul67 himself can allucidate what his thinking is when he changes threads with regards material and timimg ?

Ok to cheer ourselves up why don't we find some of our favourite goals of the season on youtube. At least to remind us of some of the good points.

Sir Paul,
Paul..I know better than most....
There is small clique of CQN posters, who are always on the hunt for chance to dig the claws in.
I realise they do this because they simply cannot think of anything original to submit to this forum.
They therefore fall back on the old tried and true...
"When one cannot think of anything interesting to pen....
Criticise!"
But, never in a Constructive manner, always in a Disparaging way!
This action seems to bolster their under-nourished self-confidence.
It is really a continuation of...
The old School-Yard Bully, Syndrome.

I’ve scrolled down to get this out of the way.
I’m really annoyed with the continual moaning going on among our support.
Saturday was a prime example. We didn’t win, and then it happens: we have fans waiting to get on the backs of either the players, or manager and board members as soon as the opportunity presents itself. They moan on CQN, in the pub, and they moan at CP.
It’s certainly true that we should be concerned with our performances this season, and feel the need to point out our failings. I’ve got no problem with that. It’s the continual moaning, and those who justify their moaning, that is unhealthy. Our performances aren’t pretty, I’m not blind, but what we need are positive suggestions, constructive criticism, something to work at and discuss, rather than fans warning us that we’re doomed.
You know, I managed to see four games over Xmas and New Year during which we scrapped some results together; coming back at 2-0 down at home was an experience. Although I didn’t see the best of performances, I enjoyed myself and I felt happy at being there and getting involved.
What I detested though is the number of fans who were just waiting to shout abuse at team members.
At one game it was Evander Sno, who had to endure the wrath of some supporters.
I don’t understand. In Sno, we have a player who could be the jewel in the team. He has poise, vision, and balance. He can turn direction, outwitting an opponent, to make a telling pass to our forwards, he’s very clever and the skill he processes is a joy to behold. I really admire this guy, he has class. To see a raw and precarious talent such as his unfold is a privilege.
Every player makes mistakes and has an off couple of games, it’s what he can do is important, it’s his strengths, and not the mistakes. You see, I like to see the positives in a player, that’s what counts.
I can’t understand those who get their enjoyment out of ridiculing a Celtic player. They are going out of their way to destroy a budding talent who will be a future star for Celtic and Holland, if he is supported.
And now for something completely different.
We have Boruc, Naka, Aiden, Big Jan, and Sno who in my opinion are our real quality players.
No matter what weaknesses they have, these are our most precious commodities.
Our defence is adequate, one solid signing there (or play Doumbe to see what he’s like), and we’ve got an improvement.
One good signing up front and we won’t be missing all the chances that have made this season so frustrating.
We are building, and that takes more than two seasons.
I can’t wait to get the league settled and win a nice shinny cup along with it, but more than anything I can’t wait to see team 3. Please Weegee make my team.
Hail Hail

How can you describe Scott McDOnald as journeyman, he's only 23!!
He will be a good signing for the club, and while maybe not out of the top drawer, he's a tenacious wee fella that holds up the ball well and brings others into play.
I think for what we are paying for him, he's a good investment and will pay dividends We could certainly have been doing with him in the last few matches I can tell you that.
-
Kojo,
Thanks for the laugh buddy
Is that melted chocolate I see ?
they simply cannot think of anything original to submit to this forum.
You are talking about yourself here Kojo aren´t you?
-
Thanks for the answer Sean South.
I would see your point about this being an irrelevant thread, however there will be people at the club now, I have no doubt, who will be looking towards the glory and riches of the premiership. Perhaps that’s where Paul is making the point to.
I do think the board have made big strides in lifting our club to where we want to see it, I think criticism of them is therefore for the most part unfounded and causes divisions amount us all that are counter-productive. The first step is getting the club onto a good financial footing, which has been achieved. I would never in my wildest dreams have expected Celtic to be posting a £17M profit any time soon. So I think we should be applauding the board in the hope that they will stay for a long while. I think the time for a pro board agenda is here so everyone is pulling in the same direction.
I would say also that I don’t think everything the board and management do is completely right, but I do believe we are all on the same side now and the board will work to make it better without us shouting at them, they have proved they have the good of the club at heart IMO.
-
NBNC,
it´s not anything recent. I have noticed this for quite some time. You´d have to back a few weeks to get what I am on about. However if you want to research it. One that I can remember was an articles posted by me talking about our boards fixation with the tried and tested Old-Firm financial model. There are others but I dont have the time to pin point them just now and as I say it´s something that Paul67 can clear up easily.
-
HH,
are you on the happy pills ?
There are a few serial moaners, but without the benefit of legalised drugs it is tough not to be depressed with the speed at which we are currently going backwards.
A lot of us are simply asking the basic fundamental questions. Some might see it as moaning - others see it as constructive criticsm.(See my post of 16.28)

really interesting story from the guardian today about a SECRET euro super league meeting which hasn't been picked up here.
I thought people might like to see where we could be heading - if we were invited to the talks - which I hope we were.
Can Kojo, Paul 67 or collie let us know if Celtic are at the table?
here's the story
secret talks have taken place between Europe's leading football clubs and Brussels politicians that could lead to a breakaway super league. Sources involved in the discussions, held at the PSV Eindhoven-Arsenal Champions League match in February, state that a breakaway is the "ultimate threat" that could be exercised if Uefa and Fifa "run wild" in their governance of the game.
The talks were prompted by clubs' concerns over the findings of the Independent European Sport Review, a report commissioned by the sports minister, Richard Caborn, during the UK's presidency of the European Union last year. The review set in train a process that will come to an end when the commissioner Jan Figel, who attended the Eindhoven meeting, delivers a white paper for sport to the European Commission later this year.
Article continues
Among the politicians present were Toine Manders, a Dutch MEP who is a long-standing advocate of free-market principles for football, and Ivo Belet, the Belgian MEP who drafted the European parliament's input into the white paper. Speaking on the BBC Parliament channel's Record Europe, Belet said: "We could have in five or 10 years a European Union super league; combined with collective selling of television rights that would be the perfect solution."
Manders explained on the same programme: "If we have a real internal market for the economic activities of professional football clubs, at the end you can have an EU league. If you have an internal market, that is feasible."
It is not known exactly what form such a league would take. However, the Guardian revealed 12 months ago a G14 strategy document drawing up a mechanism for a breakaway. That "Vision Europe" document envisaged "a detachment of the top professional level from all remaining levels underneath, if this was agreed upon by the clubs".
Those clubs would, according to that blueprint, then seek to run their own competition. This could effectively mean that the top clubs in each country would no longer compete in their home leagues.
For now there remains a strong commitment among the clubs to the Champions League and to domestic football. However, they are seeking to retain control over their own commercial activities and feel the politicians who joined them in Eindhoven have been sympathetic to their position.
One insider present at the talks said that the politicians were "particularly comfortable with having people around the table who their work will directly affect".
There is real concern about the independent sport review's demands for players to be released for international football without entitlement to compensation, the rule that suggests clubs would have to field a majority of home-grown players and a clause demanding collective selling of television rights and the sharing of revenue with smaller clubs.
This final issue will be analysed by Figel and the EC in their white-paper deliberations. Although in England the Premiership rights are sold collectively already, in many countries where clubs sell TV rights individually there is strong opposition. Milan earn more than £85m a year from their television deal while Real Madrid's seven-year deal with Mediapro, coming on stream from 2008-9, is worth about £110m each year. Moves to force them to share that cash could precipitate the exercise of their "ultimate threat" of a breakaway.

Don't know how you can get depressed. The football is dire sometimes... but other times I have seen glimpses of what we all want. While I would rather see fast flowing football every week, I’ll settle for winning just now and hopefully the fast flowing football will come.
Everywhere else seems good at Celtic, surely you cant be too depressed, sorry to repeat myself but…

On the subject of ex-Celts;
So, Farewell Paul Telfer,
You came, and got pilloried at first,

Good luck to you, and your family,

Paul67 and Kojo are once again on a witchhunt seeking out the nasty heretics who don't share the "everything in the garden is rosy" outlook.
Paul moans: "There are others who are transparent in their hostility as they never miss a chance to put a dig in...."
Kojo whines in agreement: "There is small clique of CQN posters, who are always on the hunt for chance to dig the claws in.
"I realise they do this because they simply cannot think of anything original to submit to this forum.
"They therefore fall back on the old tried and true...
"When one cannot think of anything interesting to pen.... Criticise!"
Sorry lads- but why have a forum if people aren't allowed to criticise or have a dig as Paul puts it.
I inevitably find that the most readable, stimulating and lucid posts on CQN are from posters who have not yet abandoned their critical faculties.
-
Posting as a pretty addicted CQN'craic whore'I would like to point out that it is legitimate to criticise the team and the way the club is run on forums[fora?]such as this.
What is unfair[and something I have never done]is to go to the games and not encourage individual players or the team to get the results we all want.Again if this was a general football, rather than Celtic, blog then some of the criticism would be unwise but amongst Celtic suppporters it can only be healthy to have well argued and passionate debate about the Club we care about so truly, madly deeply.
[I shall expect nothing less than a thread on Carlisle United if we don't beat the Mothers`¬)]
-
Kojo, you sure do know the blunt end of stick.
As I have said a few times, there is a psychology phd for someone on CQN waiting to be written.
Timlord, I do not believe Celtic were represented at the meeting in Eindhoven, but I do know they have been involved in previous recent talks.
DD has been instrumental in moves within the European Union and one particular mainland Europe government.
Early days yet, but this is as much encouragement as exists at the moment.
-
GarBhoy,
I see lots of good things at Celtic.
However over the last month or so a visit to any of the games or a Setanta Season ticket would surely raise a concern or two ?
All of the good things are in my opinion geared towards one thing - a much improved and superior first 11.
I was fed-up with the MON style and was totally behind the WGS talk. However we are now not getting what is being talked and IMO things have started to go backwards.
What I liked about WGS when he arrived was that he had no favourites - each player was played on his merits and current form.
Now my main concern is that there are too many untouchables - who despite very poor form get chosen week in week out, whereas others are not given a chance.
Seville67.

I don’t mind criticism, discussing the team, players, questioning WGS selections, the board’s tactics, and the deafening silence heard at games etc. That’s what CQN was set up for and more. It’s the destructive attitude of some fans that annoys me.
Wish I was on happy pills.

What I’m saying (just like yourself), is we have someone with us who has the potential of making the team something special. With his raw youth he isn’t by any means the complete footballer. And if it’s alright, I like wearing my green and white specs.

I only have a dig at you.Nobody else on this board mainly because you deserve it for being so far up your own rectum that you must be a walking Esher painting and I feel you deserve it. I am only trying to help you, beleive it or not there rae people who will do that out of th egoodness of their hearts. Not that I would expect you to understand that. Your last two posts would be perfect fodder for followfollow. I also reckon that there would be less people scrolling past your posts yawning and I will know for sure that you will have found your idealogical home.
-
HH/ GarBhoy,
I agree with both of you that the Celtic fans are very quick to criticise.
I was almost thrown out a few weeks ago for defending Sno against excessive criticism from the stands.
As long as we use the board to question and not just destroy then we are on the same page. However we all need to have the right to raise issues as we see fit.

yes its all about opinions but sno gets stick deservedly so at times, while he gets praise as well. sno to me is a typical young player either really good or really poor. to label him a possible great is far fatched in my mind think of the burchills donnelly's etc etc
Sno has been at fault plenty this season but he has been at heart of things good as well. for me he is not creative and very often imatates who he plays next to.
with lennon he sits and holds, with gravesan he is much more adventurous.
this is not me having a go as i feel i have balanced on each side but some people are getting carried away. we said the same about aidan mcgeady 2-3 years ago and he is nowhere near there yet it take years(tho still my fave player after naka)

-
My dear friend, Timlord..@17.54,
This News of a number of un-named clubs, being dis-satisfied with the present Euro set-up, is actually not NEW!
To our knowledge, these meetings have been held...on Several Occasions ,during the Past TWO YEARS or so.
Demetrius, has said from time to time, that the chance of Celtic joining a European Super League was an ambition that he would be delighted to fulfill.
I am pleased that the pressure is building, and matters may come to head, much sooner than we had suspected.
However, now that a chance for Celtic to join the E.P.L. has been further stymied,by the latest Television Contract.....
I believe that a Euro League, whether a Break Away one, or otherwise, is an avenue that we must explore.
Celtic deserve a more prominent place in World Soccer.
To be ensconsed permanently, in the S.P.L. is absurd...for a Team of Celtic's World Renown.
Kojo,
Your Pal, in Vegas.
-
Timlord, interesting article indeed.....
On the football side of things, I am constantly bemused/amused at fans criticisms if managers 'tactics'. The other mob do this all the time. So, it seems, do we.
Mostly, I'd suggest that we do not rally know what the bosses options are. Sure, on team selection, it would appear that Riorden might help, and that there are others in the squad who could give us mobility that is missing from Lennon.
But tactics? I'd say that only the man who has trained, coached and picked the team can REALLY know what all the trade offs are.
At a level that is light years from pro football, I was upgrading my coaching badges, and an ex pro and highly trained technical director was observing me in a game situation. Cup semi, needed a result. We were a goal down early on. About 5 minutes from the end, I switched from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3. We got the draw. He critiqued me for not making the change sooner. I, however, knew my players better than he did. We didn't have 3 midfielders that could control the play. This would only work for the 3 or 4 minutes that it would have taken the other team to adapt.
The game LOOKS easy....
What fans DO understand however are results. We are not getting them at the moment. There are growing doubts as to whether the manager understands the problem sufficiently to turn things around.
How we play next week will determine whether we have a successful season in winning the double. Or an unsuccessful season in winning the double.
It's a funny old game....
-
Ants. I agree on the inconsistency re Sno being down to his age and think that should be taken into account when handing out the stick. But at his age some of the things he does which are good stand out brightly. No offence but I hope I’m right and you’re wrong (sure you do too) Heres hoping.
Gotta go now. Bye to all.

Sean South, at 18.04 you said, "Sorry lads- but why have a forum if people aren't allowed to criticise or have a dig as Paul puts it".
Sean, you are one of the posters here who I always make a point of reading because I find your posts well written & enjoyable, even though I often disagree with you. On this particular issue though, you remind me of those fans who are happy to hurl abuse at players & then take mortal offence when they react.
I can't recall Paul ever saying that people weren't allowed to criticise or have a dig.
After his initial piece he pretty much gives us free rein to discuss what we like as long as it falls within acceptable bounds of decency.
Critcise or have a dig as often as you like - please just don't bleat about it if Paul chooses to argue back at you.

Dick Byrne: Sorry to disagree but I believe I am the exact opposite to your fan analogy. Yes,I dish it out, but,I am always prepared to take what flak comes back.
A good debate, discussion,argument- call it what you will depends on a rigorous, honest exchange of views which rarelt result in unanimity
My viewpoint is not that Paul67 censors the debate or demands that we can't criticise as you suggest. He doesn't,despite my feeling that this thread is a needless diversion from what we should be talking about.
But I feel that Paul67 and like-minded disciples occasionally frowns upon posters such as myself who want to explore issues regarding the board, management and sometimes players.
You don't have to read too far between the lines to see that Paul67 hints that these digs are personal rather than simply candid opinions.
I would welcome more outspoken criticism from Paul67 and not less.

Hi Paul,
On the idea of a European breakaway league do folk on here think this is a genuine prospect or is it just another one of the many non national leagues that have been proposed over the past few years. While many on here may see it as the way forward would you still think the same way if the league went ahead swallowing up the lions share of revenue but your club wasn't one of the members. This could lead to a situation where the only European football you are involved in would be at the level of the present EUFA cup or possibly lower as the top teams would not be in the competition being too busy playing in their money making self serving cartel. If the league were to be based on ability with relegation back to and promotion from the national leagues that would be one thing but if it turns out to be more like the NFL then I feel this would be detrimental to the game.
-
Hi Paul,
A question for both yourself and others on here, I have frequently been reading both on here and in the press about the huge difference in turnover between our clubs and I have no reason to argue with it, however it's not so much turnover as profit that will make the difference and even then the further caveat that the profit has to be used. If Celtic make a profit of some 17 - 20 million this year (a figure that has been mentioned) how much of this do you see being spent on players?

I haven't posted here for some time, but have to admit to amusing my self as a lurker.
Basically I got fed up listening to the myopic response of the Club CQN sycophants whenever I raised a critique, the last time I was hurriedly rounded on and chased away by Kojo's clique, (and basically lost the will to argue my point with a Beverly Hills Hairdresser).
Any Hoo,
I found it surprising that it has taken this long for other dissidents to identify Major 67’s penchant for issuing new directives when the previous debate gets touchy.
Like Delhi Belly you get a sense of it’s immanent arrival long before it actually appears,
There now seems enough “mineshafters” (their word not mine) to perhaps re introduce my self to the debate, p8ddy, sean south, aw naw,

Even Messer Jms. Forrest latest post shows potential.

Hi Paul/All,
Have been checking the posts since Saturday's result with a growing sense of disappointment. The way certain Celtic fans are over reacting to a few bad results in what has been a very successful season beggars belief. This is the last place I would have expected to hear the agenda of the old media being regurgitated but it is - the whole "we're only winning because everybody else is crap/it's time for Gordon Strachan to go etc". Might as well be reading the Daily Record - you do realise that this is what the media would love to happen don't you? For Celtic fans to be so stupid that they turn on a winning team and force the manager and promising young players to leave would make the humiliation of Black Sunday seem like a walk in the park. Celtic supporters would be the laughing stock of Scotland and rightly so. The level of abuse that Sno has recieved I have no doubt is partly due to the colour of his skin. Likewise young Aiden, one of the most exciting prospects I have seen at Celtc Park in years yet many fans have been sucked in by the Scottish media's anti-Irish/anti-Celtic propoganda and activiely look for him to make a mistake rather than encourage. Shame on you. And the Celtic fan that flung his scarf onto the pitch at tannadice - you better hope that reincarnation doesn't apply to your good self because if it does you'll come back as a Rangers fan.
One other thing, to suggest that Paul changes the thread when the conversation is becoming too hot to handle is bordering on the paranoid, take it easy, and the same goes for any personal attacks between Celtic fans. Life is too short guys, and the one thing that will kill this blog is if it becomes the retreat of the cyber hardman.

Paul just back in but I cant believe you have a starter on Shaun considering your reading of the transfer situation was really poor. Read back when myself and Vinniethedog where the only 2 disagreeing with you. I eventually called it wrong along with the cotterie due to the last minute stuff.
Let me say Paul once for all who thinks Shaun left us for money are frankly off their head and maybe they should look at their sources
Paul you did not answer my question earlier this week when I asked why did Shaun knock back 4 teams before he went to Villa at the last minute.
Do not be the media you are saying everyone not to be.
I really look forward to your response. You can check back on my input to what I believe what actually happened and I think im right.

Anyone know how Lennoxtown is gettin on ? Is it still going to be on time? And do we know what it will be called yet? How bout the Jock Stein training complex?

I recall when my dad used to take me to the football when I was a kid. It was during the great 'Jock Stein years'.
When things were not going well he would blame the manager.
I am sure he was not the first or only mineshafter during the Stein years. Can anyone confirm that their dad was like mine?
It will make me rest a bit easier!

You were right Paul, Maloney is on the bench and Villa have just went behind; it can't be pleasant for our two ex Celts. It's a strange decision for Martin not to play Maloney as he's the type of player that Villa need. Someone with pace, passing ability, skill, a bit of flar etc. At least someone to link the midfield with Carew who is isolated up front.
Sometimes MON's decisions can be confusing. He has Berger on the bench as well. I'm not sure how he is lately but he's always a player who i've rated. He just has more quality than the average Villa player which should get him in the team. At his best i'd definitely have him in the Celtic team.

Dad's words of wisdom from watching Celtic in the 60's. No2
This is the worst ref in Scotland. We will need to beat 12 men today!
(Said just before kick off, no matter who the ref was).

I like others on here at one time, thought we had appointed the right man for the job.
As documented my mind has been radically altered this season.
Anyone who thought DD was prepared to let things rest when our English approach failed had better think again.
He has taken a wider view and after the last summit, rethought and rekindled his strategy, and has been nurturing away on the finge using various methods.
Things are definately moving and not all in the corridors of power.
He was well advised on the managers strengths and weakness's, prior to appointing him, and unless i'm well off the mark has already moved for the eventuallity of losing WGS, sooner than later.Whether for football reasons or not.
DD was the driving force to bring him to the club once before and my guess is he is on the back burner, waiting for the call.
Yes, Roy Keane is the chosen one to take the club to the next level, and yes there will be big money on the table for his arrival. Now,if only DD will stay to see it through?
One more thing.
Derek Riordan will be a real big player for Celtic under new management.
Agree or dissagree, but keep an ear to the ground.

I remember my Dad taking me to see Celtic in black and white, and saying “suffering Moses” when things weren’t going well. I did see the best football on offer at times, and got annoyed as Celtic invariably took their foot off the gas once the match was won in the 1st half.

Paul,
I am slightly confused (perhaps that not unusual).
As Frank from Bedlington has pointed out, a few threads back you needlessly attacked the Celtic customer.
After an exchange of views you stated that you would stage a proper debate/thread on what it means to be a customer as oppossed to a supporter.
You have clearly ignored this. I would say forgotten - but whenever I (or indeed others) have reminded you you have pointedly ignored it.
Now you confess that you are "reaching" when picking new threads - so it can't be that there is so much to talk about.
As Frank rightly pointed out, there is trouble afoot at Parkhead - the support (or customers) are restless and unhappy. Should they be ignored? Should they be rejected?
Yet you choose to publish a slightly gloating article aimed at dissing a former player for leaving the club.
Can you explain or will you continue to pretend no one is asking?
-
I can still hear it now.....................Booooooooooooo. Yahunyay!!!

having read through the guff today i wonder if there is a new celtic website in the offing as the last time i saw lots of posts attacking Paul67 it was when celticunderground started and some people seemed to be trying to persuade all of the happy readers here that they should defect i presume because they had connections to said site.
Now we have open rudeness because:
1. sometimes some posters spend hours writing hard hitting esssays that will change everyone's view of wgs and Paul goes and posts a new topic.
2. For a change today he posted some comments on an ex celtic player playing for an ex celtic manager - a subject that obviously some people find interesting as they've posted about it.

WHO IS THIS PLAYER STILLIAN PETROV AT VILLA? This is not the same stan who put in some memorable performances for us in some big gamers yet tonight looks as if he doesn't want the ball. I really thought he would of taken that league by storm but just looks an expensive flop. Onto flops MOTM so far is MIKEL ARTETA what a game and what a season so far for i player i thought did ok but nothing special up here but really has been outstanding this season and the piece of skill he done on gavin mccann tonight he gets to keep him for that it was phenominal. What a difference in both players sad to see one of my former heroes slump to his lower depths!

A Hair-raising comment if ever there was one.
Please don’t go there.

Been away for a few days and missed the debacle at Tannadice, which from the comments here seems to be a good thing.
The only positive thing from the last couple of days comments on here is that the Celtic family is as passionate and fervent as ever and like all families not beyond a spat or two.
Some of the verbals have been funny and some just absurd bordering on surreal.
Criticism is entirely legitimate and trying to discern what is going wrong and how it might be fixed at the club we love is what any good supporter should be doing.
I am not in the conspiracy theory side that Paul67 is conscioiusly trying to sidetrack that debate.
Firstly if it was a strategy it aint working, because the thread is even more vociferous tonight on the very subject paul67 is accused of trying to get away from.
Secondly to try and do that would be to place an importance or influence on CQN that is not there.
I have no doubt Celtic players and powerbrokers read the comments from time to time but we are deluding ourselves if we think that these threads have such a profound influence on the direction of the club.
CQN has undoubtedly been noticed by many inside CP and that has been recognised by interviews with the chairman and representatives of the club giving paul67 access to press conference facilities.
However it is a long way from that to suggest that changes in thread content are timed to divert the debate away from the club as it goes through a difficult period.
Sorry but I just can't see how that fits and anyway it was never going to work.
Supporters are not happy with the drift right now and will use any avenue to express their concern/disenchantment/disgust/displeasure (delete one or all as appropriate) and will continue to do so be it on radio phone-ins, internet blogs or just whingeing in the pub with friends.
The real solution is not shifting things to a chat about Aston Villa but Celtic winning two more games to cross that finishing line.
The frustration is that only one man can really set about doing that properly and all the rest of us can do is hope he gets it right.
Meantime for what it is worth I have ceased to be a "happy clapper" and have my entry application for the mineshaft in front of me.
I think Timlord was right earlier today. Maybe only when you are in the deep dark is when you finally get to see and appreciate the light at the end of the tunnel.
Profound stuff amidst some of the other less appetising exchanges on here today.
-
Maloney claims the decision had nothing to do with money, only he knows if that's the truth or not. I guess one arguement will be the premiership is a higher standards of football and he wants to test themselves at a higher level. Not saying I agree, just offering an alternative point of view....

Amortised Jock - Your Dad's comments were spot on.

CQN - changing blogs to divert attention away contentious subjects - DRIVEL!
I've been on this site almost from the beginning and first posted in the following January and haven't ever seen this.
Maybe now that we're gaining the moral high ground against the bigotted Huns, some Celtic fans have nowhere to direct their paranoia but inwards?

Have posted this before but think it might be of more relevance now than then.
• I am a socialist at heart and in the ideal world socialism would be my ideal model for social structure and functionality.
The romance of socialism has long since deserted me and its passing left somewhat of a vacuum for a while, but was soon replaced with Cold Hard Reality.
The reality being that if I wanted to give my family a standard of living I believed they were deserving of, then the only person who could possibly deliver was me. Not a ‘body corporate’, not a welfare state dependant on others and most definitely of all, not a begging bowl.
On a personal level I have known the soul destroying existence that is the world of the unemployed. I have known the depravity of borrowing of friends with little if any possibility of ever being able to pay my dues. But no matter how low I got or felt I never lowered myself to the level begging. Not when I was a functioning human being. Begging is for the desperate and the truly needy.
The only way my family were going to have a decent standard of living was if I personally delivered.
Reality is Celtic Football Club are a PLC. The sole purpose of a is to make a profit for it’s investors. Simple.
The laws that govern PLC’s decree that ‘sugar daddies’ are not only not welcome, the practice is in fact against the law and a so called sugar daddy can do serious time if he dares to meddle with the legal day to day dealings of said PLC.
That is REALITY.
So some have issue with the Board. They could do more.
How?
In what way can they do more?
There appears to be such an abundance of dormant knowledge amongst some persistant Board knockers, I fear, as a Celtic Supporter, I might just be being short changed, by a board, which are in fac,t in the financial world, much admired and held in the highest esteem. Even in awe. No other club in the UK returned such favourable figures. Without such figures investors shy away and the consequence is reflected in the quality of the employee: i.e. the players who take to the field in the hoops.
All board knockers are entitled to their opinions. Of course they are. However these said board knockers do nothing more that play in contention. I have yet to read a single opinion on here or any other blog, that contrary to present board doctrine, would enhance the potential of Celtic Football Club and it’s supporters one iota.
I say to all the knockers, "Put Up or Shut Up"..
If you are in possession of some magicical, legal financial panacea which will propel our club to heights we can only dream of, then come on, come out and share it with us all.
We’ll all invest.
Or are you all mouth and no thought. Read the legalities of the club and the rules under which it trades before ignorantly pontificating.
Have we all so quickly forgotten how close we came to extinction? An ex socialist who lost the romanticism and found reality maintained our dream and existence. Without the Bunnet, we were HISTORY.
Not a body corporate of Good Celtic Supporters saved the day. We just didn’t have the men with savvy and the money at the time prepared to put up.
When Fergus moved on we were fortunate to attract the calibre of Office Holder we now enjoy. It was and is their money that keeps our club afloat. They could sell out
And move on. But this I CAUTION you.
WHO would replace them.
Better the devil we know I say.
There is no Socialist movement amongst the Celtic Support that could afford the club but there are plenty of financial sharks who are presently circling.
Be careful what you wish for just in case your God grants your FIRST WISH.
If you want a club worthy of your support then support the club to the extent of your worth and if you have issues then don’t generalise, be constructively objective and leave the cheap pops to others from others.
I too am not happy at the way we have performed over the past couple of weeks but to blindly lash out and berate everybody and anybody, that’s cheap and intellectually bankrupt.
By all means criticize but here is a novel suggestion for you. Try and be a little bit original and give some constructive alternatives.
What would you do differently?
Not so easy eh?
-
Edward, the proposed European League carries the threat of exclusivity; where the chosen take themselves away from the competition that exists in European football at the moment.
I think this is a negotiating position. As we proposed here on Celtic Quick News in 2004, Uefa must accommodate aspirations of the clubs and the European Union, and they must do so while maintaining meritocracy (or by returning to meritocracy).
A European league of 20 clubs fed by promotion from below would do this, and is the route Uefa must take.
On your second question:
It is not even profit that is the important element of football finance.
Turnover, or income, is the top line figure. From this, remove fixed costs and non-football variable costs, including interest repayments and dividends. This will leave you with a football budget that can be spent on transfer fees and wages.
Celtic’s profit next season might be zero, especially if they spend a large amount on wages or transfers, but by definition they will have spent a lot on players.
Contrast this with a club with an income half as big, but with a similar fixed cost commitment for things like policing, electricity, rates, etc. After this club (can you think of one) pays its bills, their ‘disposable’ income, that I will call ‘football budget’ is likely to be even less than half of Celtic’s.
Chairbhoy, is the pie in the oven?
GL2, I remember saying that I don’t know why Shaun knocked back his other options, maybe they did not materialise as he was led to believe?
Neg Anon, I do think the debate has merit, but I need to get the tone right, or I will get people mis-quoting me for months (just like you did).
Tinytim, I expect the tribute to Jinky to be announced over the summer.
-
Chairboy, you must go to different games from me,we are dire right now,we cannot get goals.WGS bought good players JJ,TG and DR yet we have had no return, something is far wrong and sorry not from CB St Pats.

Why is it that it is all the wannabe players who prostitute themselves to the media , to gain some recognition( the type that their performances can never give them). In the Evening Times we have to listen to Gary Caldwell speaking on how Celtic will not throw the title away , from one of the biggest bottle merchants in the squad.....joker!!!!
Just another in a long line of glory hunters whose performances can`t get them any good press........Miller, Beattie, etc.
Just shut up ,knuckle down and put in a good performance occassionally and you may get the noteriety you crave
-
Kitalba
You win tonights award for recycling, the first time was bad enough but tonight's repeat has me shouting at a defenceless monitor.
Your thoughts on what a "man gotta do" regarding the health and wellbeing of his family are straight out a depression era pot-boiler where pride comes before the salvation being offered by Keynesian economics and "socialised" healthcare.
At least the "CareintheCommunity" CSC and the other neo Thatcherite bams who frequent this blog will be nodding in agreement as they peruse the site fropm the warmth of their countryclub hideaways.
I just don't get your argument at any level, sucess for the next generation is not solely based on what their father or mother can provide for them is a purely material sense, it is based on the society they grow up in and the opportunities that it can provide. What use money for the few if their grand-parents, cousins and friends are all on their uppers.
Socialism or "Progressive / Collectivist / Constructivism" is the only way no matter what the Daily Mail says.
Now onto your thoughts about the club. Again wrong at every level:
Profit for investors = No
Sustainable profits for investors over the medium term = Yes.
DD = Invested £30mill+ in the club over the years / Best guess.
Fans = "Invest" £30mill+ in tickets every season.
Who should have the bigger say?
Individuals who spend their wealth on assets or the masses who spend their income on services (watch a game).
We are only a £50/100mill football club because the fans continue to spend £50mill+ with the club every season. The issue is that we are only consumers.
So I will return to my hobby horse of 18 months ago:
Split the club into 2.
1) PLC owning the bricks and mortar.
2) Fans co-operative running the football club. Season ticket gets you a say in the running of the club.
The final question would be where would DD put his money?
-
Goodbye, thanks and all the best to the Telfmeister!
Yes, I did have a go at you on these hallowed pages, but unlike a certain midfield raving bald collegue, you always gave your all, never hid in a game and always provided an outball for a team-mate in a tight spot.
As for Maloney, he left for a smaller club, too play for a manager who did not trust him enough to make him a first team regular.
Judging by his first few games, this pattern is continuing.
Enjoy your mid table mediocrity, Sean

-
Hi Paul,
Firstly thanks for replying to both questions, I think I worded my second one badly. The point I was intending to make was that no matter how big the turnover it is profit made before football expenses that is important. I understand your point in reply that a profit may be zero but with a large investment in players using up the money that would otherwise have been a profit. Maybe I should stick to reading about finance rather than trying to make points on it lol.
P.S I was surprised to read from your reply that Partick Thistle have as much as half of Celtics turnover ;-)
-
Imagine Celtic have signed a player, and it becomes apparent he has the following characteristics:
1) He seems to dislike the manager. It's all he can do to keep it under his hat at the best of times, but whenever things go a bit wrong he takes the opportunity to express his views to all and sundry.
2) Temperament: his performance is OK when things are going perfectly, but as soon as the slightest adversity sets in, a couple of bad results for example, he begins to panic.
3) When he panics, his way of dealing with it is to vocally question the abilities of his teammates, the management and the board. Sometimes he abuses players vitriolically, telling them they are useless and overrated.
4) When other people question his performance, and the fact that he doesn't seem to be pulling in the same direction, he invokes his right to self-expression. He says others are attempting to stifle him. He says that he is entitled to play in the manner he sees fit, and that this is better than if the whole team was just reading from the same old hymnsheet.
5) When people begin to question his loyalty to the club, he kisses his jersey and tells them how much of a fan he's been all his life. Having got that out the way, he proceeds once again to tell everyone how very few of them deserve to be in the squad, and repeats once again his belief that the manager must go.
Would you extend his contract or not?

Well said, John Paul II the Great Pope is fondly remembered.

the final question isn't where would dd put his money, his money is already there and there's not a hope in ibrox that he'd let a supporters collective have an equal say in a business he's invested 30 million in.
unfortunately, nice though it may be to dream, you are a customer, he is an investor. they are different. he does have to keep (the greater) you happy or you may be an ex-customer, but he isn't about to let you outrule him on decisions.
apart from the practicalities, we'd go bust in 5 years from sacking managers every year. the present incumbent is a stick on to win back to back titles and got us on the big stage in europe again but has an approval rating lower than margaret thatchers was in scotland

After reading some of the blog today and over recent weeks , I have solved the fan versus consumer arguement.
Consumers become irritable , nasty , provocative and abusive when the product malfunctions or isnt astetically pleasing as when they paid their first installment.
The fan however perservers with the product for its sentimentality and its meaning of value. They will get the most use from the product. When the product malfunctions they are calmer and will tend to get the product mended.
There is no debate around here anymore. Its abuse and demands and opinions become facts. To be a Celtic fan sometimes is frustrating but listening to other fans sometimes can be soul destroying. I fear for the current footballing plan at CP. There is no way the current support can allow youth development. They just dont have the patience nor do they understand how it works.

Big Liam - Excellent post, oh and by the way I'm a Fhan.
Are the mineshafters consumers?

-
Liam, you're right - especially about the effect it has on debate.
And the irony is, many of the people who are complaining that there is not enough debate, are the ones who are the very reason for its absence.
Take me for example. I've never been someone who blindly accepts what is given down to them by the powers that be. I am by temperament somewhat anarchistic, and so when an authority-opinion - or even a general consensus - is put forward, I will immediately look to question it, and to search for better ways of doing things.
So I am in the natural community of people who could be expected to call the manager's decisions into question - at exactly those times when things seem to be going well.
But - quite the contrary - on CQN I find myself constantly posting in support of Gordon Strachan - for the simple reason that the criticism of him is so extreme, so vociferous, and so totally out of proportion with the reality of the club's situation, that I actually find myself getting a bit angry at the reasonless unfairness of it. In fact more than that - I find myself almost incredulous, and struggle once more to even understand it, with every new outburst.
This is what is stifles debate. Because people like me who would otherwise be engaging in the debate, even leading it, find themselves forced into the situation of being Happy Clappers, simply to provide some sane counterbalance the sheer blind negativity of the Detractors.
Now my memory is not the best in the world, but this did NOT happen with Martin O'Neill. With MON, there was NOT a sudden chorus of "told you so" whenever the team dropped a couple of points. There was NOT the constant underlying implication that our very success itself would actually turn out to be A Bad Thing, as it was disguising some underlying weakness, something indeed "rotten", as one recent poster expressed it.
Under MON I filled the position you might expect of a supporter with my temperament - I'd go to the games, enjoy the victories, but then point out what I felt to be weaknesses and flaws in the thing, which I hoped we could make better. Under Gordon Strachan, who has already - in The Big One - achieved what Martin didn't manage in five seasons - I am stunned by some of the vitriol against the manager - Our Manager - who has brought us this success.
I believe anyone who could help me begin to understand it would be teaching me summat valuable about the human condition...

hoopla
i've stopped commenting on any posts on strach any more, i scroll past them.
it depressed me the way that many on here and elsewhere attack him as soon as anyhting goes wrong. this isnt what i was brought up to expect form celtic supporters
i've given up trying to work out why it happens.

It baffles me why there is so much in fighting among Celtic fans at times. Is it a Celtic thing? Is it a Scottish trait?
Aw Naw as far as believing that Paul changes the blog when you post your stuff....you flatter yourself. If he took that approach with the negative minded contributors he would be changing his articles half a dozen times a day.
Instead of attacking him we should be grateful for the time and effort Paul puts into this blog and how he stays the course with the slings and arrows that fly is beyond me. And before someone labels me some of the nasty labels that certain conributors on CQN are given....I am allowed an opinion too.

Well said.
Personally I think it's part of a God complex that a lot of bloggers have that leads them to feel so wronged by Paul67.
For me, personally, the man created this forum. Doesn't force his opinions on anyone, tolerates people like me, doesn't hog the limelight, Is totally wrong about loads of Celtic stuff, is as impartial as humanly possible at times, loves Celtic, thinks that DD is capeble of compartmentalising his thoughts suficiently to care more about our club than the financial well being of his investment.
Hey, but thats OK.
The beauty of CQN is its simplicity.

"For it's a grand old team..."
"We don't care if we win , lose or draw..."
"Celtic, Celtic, that's the team for me..."
"You'll never walk alone..."
"We are Celtic supporters, faithful through and through..."
Looking at some of the "debate" on this thread I wonder if these words above have any meaning any more?
Or maybe the guy that once said "At this club you are only ever 2 defeats away from a crisis..." was on the money ?
I blame live televised football, video games and shock-jock sports "journalism" in that order.
-
Quick news? More like lazy journalism. Sorry Paul, but "news" such as this ain't news at all...
Not one of your better posts/threads (IMHO).
-
Paul, you wrote in your fine blog yesterday...
“Maloney moved for a wee bit more money...”
I really hope that isn’t true...Because If it is I think that Celtic made a big mistake by not giving him “a wee bit more money” and keeping one of our most accomplished youth players in years at Celtic Park for a bit longer. I watched the Aston Villa game last night and his introduction showed what we have been missing on the park recently. He is fast, clever, skilful, direct, inventive and EXCITING. How many more season tickets would the club sell with him in the team? How many more people would actually turn up to watch the games? There would have been no transfer fee, he was already in place...If other young players had started saying “We want what he got” Then the simple answer would be...When you are that good...Maybe.
We have spent a lot of money this season on players who will never be as good as Maloney or who don’t get a game or who somehow don’t adjust to Scottish football. Maloney knew how to break down the ten man defences in the SPL. He had proven what he could do and shown what he could bring to the team. We need continuity at the club, he would have helped to give us that...and then there is the small matter of the CL qualifier in August...
There are so many reasons why we should have kept him, if possible. Not least of these being the sell on value.
Maybe it wasn’t down to money, as some posters have suggested. I hope this is true. I hope it’s just down to Shaun showing his loyalty by dumping us at the first opportunity for the bright lights of the premiership. I know that there is nothing the club could have done to prevent that happening....That phenomenon is just something we are going to have to learn to live with now...That, or the offer of wages which are simply beyond us...But not for a few dollars more, please.

Positive criticism
-
"To support the team the Glasgow Celtic way".
Awe Naw, your blog name betrays your attitude to Celtic, condemn first, even before Enrico stepped on to the park.
Paul, like the poor, the clowns will always be with us.
A way, way, back I posted verbatim from Wilie Maley's book on the dissent and posturing that took place at meetings to form the club, before a ball was kicked.
This resulted in good men wailking away because some others thought they were more important. Maley pondered whether this attitude was "an Irish thing".
The more things change... as the French might say, in French, of course.
Keep it going Paul.

think there is a bit of revision of history going on here sometimes regarding MON and how he escaped criticism whereas WGS gets bucketloads, all insinuating it is because WGS isnt a catholic/celticfan/celticminded (delete as appropriate).
I rarely missed a game home or abroad during MON's time at the club and can confirm at different times and to varying degrees he took dogs abuse from the GFITW. His team slection and style of play was forever taking a bashing as well as his "favourites" but you rarely felt let down by the effort, workrate and spirit his teams showed, something that sadly has been lacking the last month or so. This is even more galling when in the middle of such a poor run the team were able to put in 2 games against milan showing all those attributes. When you play for celtic you need to show this every game, at your falkirk stadiums and tannadices, not just the san siro, you dont just turn it on now and then, it is a constant.
Think that has more to do with the criticism rather than the petty, "he gets slagged more than MON cos he isnt celtic minded".
I dont think anyone would seriously question how passionate WGS and how desparate he is for success with the hoops, just at the moment some are questioning his managerial skills and some of his decisions, nothing more, nothing less.
Can i just say that would never boo or criticise a player or manager at the game as this is pointless, the job of the supporter for 90 mins is to get behind the team, I have faith but not blind faith which is why after the games have finished I question with friends and on here things that i see in my opinion are hampering us the now, and would list them if anyone was interested.
-
Why do so many posters have to point out that they never boo or criticise the team when they are at a game?
Pat
-
Seems like a bit of sanity is returning to the blog. Keep telling it as you see it, Paul. Don't let the begrudgers grind you down. Life would be a whole lot emptier without CQN for a whole lot of us, maybe especially those of us who don't tune into the likes of Radio Clyde and absorb their pap.
-
Can only talk for myself giz but like to point it out as when i write here do not want people to associate me with those johnny come latelys at the game who create panic in the players and start booing and moaning if we havent scored in first 15 mins. These are the fans who boo a sideways pass or when mcgeady fails to get by a mann and should the oppostion have the audacity to play a couple of passes... well they go ballistic.
Just pointing out that i think here is the place to discuss the merits of players, rather than in the poisnous way a significant amount of people do during the 90 mins!
-
Morning Paul,
Still enjoying this as much?
I haven't been posting (or even lurking as much) these days. I bet you can guess why, and occasionally wish you didn't have to either, eh? :-)
Checked in yesterday and, after reading the last couple of threads, felt the need to say this....
1) I criticised NL a few weeks back, and instantly it was like a pack of rabid dogs on my back. Oh how I laughed to see these very same rabid dogs are now shouting together(surprise surprise) how he is finished!
2) Paul Telfer leaves, and he is now a good player who will be missed? (have some of these posters NO morals?? or at least consistency?)
3) You change threads to stifle a subject!!! HAHAHAHA!!!! Does the fact that people RE-POST their (Oh-so-interesting-everyone-must-read-AGAIN) point on the new thread not sort of nullify this argument?
I would have thought the way to "stifle" would be simply for you to DELETE the posts. I may be wrong, but in all the years I've been reading this blog, I BELIEVE the only posts you've deleted have been offensive or libelous ones?
There is also an increasingly loud call of "the blog is going/has gone downhill"..... It HAS! But not because of the quality of the subject thread. I would say it has been directly related to the quailty of poster.
I honestly don't know why you bother Paul. I'm still sort of glad you do, but I wouldn't.
Yours in Celtic,
StevieS
the usual suspects,
Enjoy throwing your childish abuse, I won't be here to read it.
-
Just spoke to wee shaun who tells me that the benches at Villa park are really great - much softer and comfier than at Celtic Park and the sightlines are excellant.
He then went into some details of adjustable temperature and massage functions and how they help to keep you fit even if your not playing.
Anybody who thinks it was anything to do with money is mistaken...
-
I think WGS is damned if he does damned if he doesn't...
Saturday v Dundee Utd we were very poor 1st half...In 2nd half we had control of the game and were coasting along, does he make a change (If it ain't broke, don't fix it) and go for the win or does he let it run out (Dundee Utd score a punt return type goal...big hoof up the park & a volley from distance in the closing seconds)
We didn't play great at Tannadice, very poor pitch indeed. However I have also witnessed excellent Celtic teams play very poorly indeed at this venue and LOSE to much inferior United sides.
All teams hit a low patch, maybe a slight depression from losing out in the CL in such fashion. We can see the lack of urgency in midfield, Hartley being asked to sit BEHIND Lennon ???
Most sides close down our main attacking threats (Naka & Aidenhino) Time we came up with a new format to step up the pressure on the opposition.
-
StevieS, you only think CQN has gone down hill because you cannot remember how bad it used to be :-)
Back in the early days, when I way saying “we don’t have any money to spend” I was getting hate mail every day from a few sorry individuals, so yesterdays paranoia was pleasant by comparison.
Wachow, I know where you are coming from; I think the debate on Gordon Strachan is painfully poor, verging on the ridiculous. Trouble is, so many people made their minds up in August 2005 and cannot see past their initial assessment.
Can they be reached? Not sure.
-
Morning Pau/CQN
Brief stop in to say that I have this week backed Celtic to win the league by 18 points or more and to say that anyone who believes that socialism represents a sustainable and desireable socio-economic system does not value their own freedom highly enough.

we are really really poor at the moment.
it is just as well the hun are so poor we really have nothing to fear.
this season at least.
what we are seeing now is what has been coming all season.
what is going on at the club we all love?
the football is dire, a lot of our players are average or below. it is simply not acceptable.
it is certainly not worth the £500 i pay every year for a season ticket.
but i will still be back next year. and the year after and the year after that.
i could get pelters for this...but i dont believe guys like pressley, hartley, beattie, miller, jarosik and this year lennon should be anywhere near a celtic first team.
out the door in the summer will/should be
gravesen (hes already been told to find another club)
lennon (past it. youve been a great)
balde (on too much dosh)
beattie (cant stay upright)
miller (you know)
jarosik (get rid of this dud while someone still thinks hes good)
im willing to give zurawski another roll of the dice, if only for the fact hes been injured. because jvoh is being afforded the same lee-way.
and why are we still bleating on about maloney and petrov?
they chose their path. and it wasnt green.
fair enough they are better than what we have on display at the moment but lets not look back. lets get the ball moving forward again.
WGS has some really big decisions to make over the next week or two, if he plans to be around after the summer that is.
-
Tonight's CL game on ITV is Liverpool v PSV.I think given our resources it is not unreasonable for us to aim to make the same imprint in Europe that PSV have.
The new WSC arrived yesterday.Given what the general tenor of the debate has been here since Saturday there was an illuminating feature on the RTE pundits[Dunphy,Brady and Giles]comparing the'frankness'of their criticism with the inoffensive approach taken by the likes of Lineker and Hanses on MOTD.
Must be in the genes..
-
Reposting this under my correct blog name:
I just want to add my thanks to The Telfmeister, Telferinho. Big Joe and others sre spot on. He always gave his all and was always there to help out and perhaps even improved Nakas game (!)
Well done PT, I hope you enjoy the remainder of your career in the knowledge that you played , and played well for the 'tic.
As for the Maloney and Petrov bashers, sorry I dont get it, maybe its a mellowing with age thing. (I still havent forgiven King Kenny for going to Liverpool)
Anyway to all of you who wish ill fortune to our ex celts, there is more to life than what team you play for. There are hundreds of factors considered when someone makes a 'life choice'.
Paul 67 said ''Maloney moved for a wee bit more money, nothing that would change his life. Not in a positive way, anyway.''
I rarely disagree with you Paul but
isnt that a bit simplistic? You dont alude to any other reason for SM leaving. I presume you have proof of your claim? Your piece on him is daming and I hope those who read the article are able to make their own mind up and are not influenced by your negative approach to the guy.
Personally I wish the guy well as he was a wonderful player and gave me some brilliant memories as a Celtic fan and for that Im grateful.
...and Paul, I love your blog, and most of what you write. I hope you take my critism with a pinch of salt.

It's been a while...
For the record I am a GS fan and supporter - happily accepted him when he was officially announced.
a) Current team. GS keeps saying about 'getting the tactisc wrong'. I think we can all see that this is evident. For me, some players are not being utilised at their best.
JVOH - No Sutton (yet, but we missed a target man or more so, someone to get the ball to feet too. It seems GS has told him to hog the penalty spot. Could be more influencial - player or GS fault?
Gravesen - headless chicken who lacks composure sometimes. Other games and moments he looks different class. player or GS fault?
Lennon - It's definitely time to go. YES there are times and games he does 'the right thing' but too many times he has let himself down recently - that's been his conduct more so. I believe the midfiled still have to cover more ground because of him. *see Paul Hartley
Hartley - Is this the same guy? OK, played in a defensive role just now - why? To cover for NL ?
We need someone who can play defensive and cover their own ground. If that's PH, then we need a more attack minded player to compliment him (or other defensive midfielder).
Jarosik - Honeslty, I am stumped.
Miller - As much as I thought he'd contribute more in terms of goals, I think it's time to cut the losses. Normally after one season I wouldn't say that, but ...
Beattie - Hmmm sometimes I think "Is this his time?". Same way as I thought MCGeady was hit n miss. I wouldn't cry if he left.
Magic - Dunno what's going on, but he made a slight difference on Saturday.
All in all it's either GS tactics or things just not working out player-wise. Personally, GS has an abundance of talent at his disposal, it just doesn't seem to want to work out this season. The team is still re-building and we have the funds, so hopefully this summer (phase 3) will see a more settled and driven side for next season.
b) Maloney - he's been and gone. Get over it! I was and am a Maloney fan and for me he made the wrong move. It's done - "next please!"
c) Villa + MON - seriously, what's the fuss? Unless you're a Villa fan, then why all the furore?
d) Paul Telfer - Reminds me of Stephane Mahe. Gave his all, under-rated most of the time but certainly nothing to get out your seat about. At least he was willing to sacrifice some family committments to give his all for Celtic. Hope to see you back for the title party.
Overall it looks like a disappointing end to a season, according to the media (*see Gordon Strachan's last press conference) we had won back in November. BUT the future is bright - even the most critical of you must see that?
Hope Saturday is a much better day - I have a German couple coming over for the weekend and tickets have been bought. Area 403 incase you hear any foreign obscenities ;¬)

if there is a team in the cl this season that plays less "celtic way" football than psv i havent seen it.
psv have the benefit of playing in holland. the local players are much better than scotlands. much more than them we have to buy in our quality.
tbd
a domestic double to celebrate (if we get there) is not a disappointing end to the season. neither is the blip we are going through. if anything it makes us less complacent for next season.

I'm taking a minibus to the golf day so, there are 6 x places available (left) for anyone in the Glasgow area. I'm picking 3 x people up at Celtic Park so, the first 6 who want a lift get in quick. It will be golf clubs only no trolleys.

Watchow-.
I haven't seen enough of them to comment on their style of play but if we had a similar recent record in Europe we'd be feeling pretty pleased with ourselves.+
I don't expect us to compete on a regular basis with Barcelona,Milan etc on a regular basis but PSV are a good example of a club punching above their weight.
-
watchow
You've got PSV wrong, they are the least Dutch of the Dutch teams - they have a notoriusly bad youth policy. Their policy has always been to purchase players, keep them for 3 years and sell them on to ensure asset management and freshness of squad. Hence why we got JVofH in the summer - he was one of the two to go.
They also take advantage of the easier work permit regulations to purchase players from across the world, building on their reputation gained through the successful integration of Romario and Ronaldo to Europe.
There was an excellent article on them in the Sunday Herald this week, I should have known (but didn't) that the P stands for Philips!

Farewell Paul Telfer,
You were a better player than you were generally given credit for. If all our signings delivered the same price:performance ratio as you, we'd have sown the league up weeks ago. Wish some of our forwards had your first touch!

According to the ofeeshul site PSV were founded in Aug 1913,after a sports festival hosted by the electrical manufacturers Philips to mark 100 years of Dutch independence. The football club was just one of several branches of the sports club.
The present Philips stadium is built on the same ground as its predecessors.

think the team thought the season went august to feb!!!
only joking, all teams have a bad spell during a season, ours seems to have been for a while albeit results disguised it until last 4 weeks, better to have the bad run 19 points ahead than behind!
slightly concerned if similar happens next year and we dont have the same cushion.
A good end to the season finishing on a positive note and some positive moves in the transfer market and march will be a distant memory!
-
watchow - of course you are right. but as much as you cant judge a season on a 2 month spell, likewise you must judge a season on the whole season.
the season is NOT over - the league and cup not won yet.
there has been a dip in form recently and if it carries on there will be no league or cup to celebrate - that's the truth of it.
we have every right to be concerned. more so when the carrots are so close and couldve been taken already.
