Hello.

Great article Paul.
Party time.
Lubo.
-
Has anyone got a link to WGS press conference please?

Well said Paul. Perspective. The great leveller.
And so to a weekend of Beer, Babycham and Bachannalia.
See when it gets this close?
I'll take winning poorly over losing gracefully any day.

Bhoys,
On Sunday 6th May Paul67 celebrates his 40th birthday.
I have organised a Celtic Quick News Birthday Meal to allow the good posters of this blog the chance to help him celebrate that very special day.
The Avonbridge Hotel, Hamilton, is the venue and the date is Friday 11th May.
The price will be around £30.00 per head and includes a full 4/5-course meal.
The time of the event will be 7.30pm for 8.00pm.
Unfortunately there will be a limit on the amount of places available.
Places will be reserved on a first come, first served basis and can be reserved by emailing me on
martinbrennan42@hotmail.co.uk 42mar
If you wish to be there on the night, email me as soon as possible.
Cheers,
Martin.

Paul- A fine and very timely reminder to all of us of the success Gordon Strachan has brought to the club. Let us all reflect on our history, the good times and the bad.
But Paul. I see you're nearly 40 now. Have you nothing better to do with your time than all this blogging silliness? How about bowls, counting bookies odds in a pre-decimal fashion or smoking the pipe? These are activities far more in keeping with your new found seniority.
In the meantime, have a grand birthday when it comes and let us all celebrate being CHAMPIONS once again.

Ah keep telling the youngsters around me (ie. those under 25) that they are living in a golden period of Celtic football club.
But they don't believe me...they think we have a 50-50 chance , at worst, of lifting the title each year. They've never known a win by anyone else apart from us or the Govan mob.
And even if they read your blog Paul, I'm convinced many still won't believe or appreciate it !!!
I compare it to house prices....until you've personally been through a price crash, you don't believe it will happen again one day in the future. In spite of the evidence being there.
Anyways. Let's enjoy this year's title win and hope GS can keep his magic going !!!
Hail Hail to the Champions 2006-2007.

excellent article paul....however you are overlooking one thing....
..walter still has £37 million of unused warchest from the £40 million that le guen had at his disposal...or does £40 million turn cinderella like into £3 million as soon as the clock strikes season ticket renewal time is past...

As The Platcave is in serious need of tidying up, I shall now take my leave.

Cheers Lubo.
Welcome wee shug. Congratulations and congratulations when the day comes.
McGraininSpain, you will be pleased to hear I am very immature for my age. I am not dealing with the situation well.
Mrs 67 just said, “It is about your age men start to think about younger women”. I had to put her right, and insisted men think that way from around the age of 25.
You’re welcome whitedog.
Plato, were you locked in the cave? Do caves lock?
Antibes, I like your analogy.
Barcabhoy, I hope Walter spends every penny Zsa Zsa can muster. It will still not be enough.
-
Paul67 - are you sure you are not Estadio in disguise?? Great article, especially the bit about remembering those who first shared the experience with us. The phone lines from Bolton to Dunbar will be hot this weekend.
For those of you fortunate to be at Rugby Park on Sunday give the manager and the team the support they richly deserve and then give another cheer for those of us who cannot be there in person but will be in spirit wherever we are on the globe - and then give an extra special cheer for Celtic_First, unfortunate to be stuck in Porto Alegere, Brazil and, as yet, no means of seeing the match!
-
John @11:12 last article.
I enjoyed your post. A lot of it rang true to me.
-
Fellow CQNers,
If all Celtic supporters on Monday had the same response when asked How was your weekend?, wouldnt it be wonderful if we all said "Just Champion, thanks."
Hail,hail.
-
Fantastic piece Paul.
Loved the 50% success rate stat of winning EVERY Championship we've contested since Big Jock became manager.
It's an article that has got me right in the mood for a party this weekend.
We Shall Not Be Moved.
-
Paul,
You're on dangerous grounds with your boss on the 25 yr old comment. Take it from someone with more experience.
I tried the line once that when a mans wife reaches 40 does that mean the husband could trade her in for 2 20 year olds. Back o the Heid's still hurtin.
-
canajunbhoy 0 I agree with you about John's post@ 11.51, especially the bit about 12 of them being at the Leeds game at Hampden but only 6 having tickets. I was lucky to be at that match as a 12 year old (with a ticket) but have a strong memory of at least 3 fans jumping the turnstile as I made my way through - must have taken their chances when smaller people were going through. The game itself is still my 'best of all time' and I remember it as though it was yesterday. One memory is of being carried (note, not walked!) out of the stadium after the match when someone asked who had won the other semi. On hearing the answer someone said "Feye who?" - well we weren't long in finding out. Despite the final outcome that year it was a great Celtic side and one which we should aspire to again. I live in hope.
-
Uplifting Paul. Not that I needed lifting when such a momentous weekend is at our doorstep. Has anyone else notice the complete disinterest from the media? I live in Ireland now but I can feel the general apathy towards Celtic in Scotland from here.
Apart from Celtic fans everywhere, is anybody remotely interested in us WINNING ANOTHER TITLE. Say it loud, say it proud. If anyone is having difficulty in getting motivated think back to when Rangers were winning thier 5th, 6th, 7th, 6th, and 9th titles.
Remember how it felt? Denial was my medicine. Denial and apathy.
What goes around comes around.
Well done WGS and the team for the fantastic effort this season.
Apologies for using this blog name. Trouble at Blogger-I'm really Corrib 04

Paul67
A piece of timely perspective. I hope we have a wonderful weekend and enjoy our triumphs appropriately. Lets us never forget the wilderness years!
I am sure the manager like the rest of the support is well aware that our performances have been flat of late, with the exception of a a truely memorable performance in the San Siro.
I know he will be working on rectifying this and let us hope this begins on Sunday. I would really like us to turn it on against Killie. I do recall how the Killie players celebrated their 4-0 defeat as if it were a victory. In truth that was more distasteful than any idea that Dunfermline had lay down to Ran666ers. Including in this was a celebratory ex-Celtic keeper.
I think it is high time we repaid that particular favour on them.
Mon the hoops!
-
Boltonbhoy, well disguised.
Tully57, if you think 21 out of 42 is impressive, wait until you see what it looks like 50 years post-Jock.
Canajunbhoy, good point.

watchow
Itis easy for us colonials to be ever so merry as we dont have to look the hun in the face.
We can sit at home drink cold beers, watch the game on channel67, bandwidth permitting, and once we are
inebriated reminisce on the good old days.
But, I have young nephews in Glasgow, Partick mostly, and they let me know their angst, one in particular told me how this was mcgeady's last chance to prove himself.
When I told him how foolish he was and that mcgeady would be a legend he calmed down, and hoped I was right.
Perhaps we were brought up in a different age, as Billy Connolly, a St Gerard's boy says " the sixties were different, and yes things changed" and the Lisbon Lions were part of that change.
I recall going to ibrox or Parkhead they had millar brand henderson but more importantly shearer caldow mckinnon we had chalmers divers mcvittie we would pound them the whole of the first half and the first five minutes of the second they would run up the park and score game over.
Oh how we wished for a saviour, we had seen him in the 1963 cup semi final, a wee midget wi' red hair who ran at them and wasn't scared, but the Big Man had not arrived.
I wasn't there during their NIAR and it must have been painful, however, now we are the Champions and it is sweet.
For those who know their history
it is chocolate.
Never forget.
Being a Tim is the Prize.
Winning is icing on the cake.

Hey long time reader 1st time poster, good article and what does every1 think we need (realistic signgings I mean) for next season?
I would like to see Miller and Zurawski go, Beattie on loan. Look for a central midfielder and a striker to partner big Jan

Seumas, aye, we remember well.
Steelica, I would be happy to see both Dunfermline and St Mirren go down. Especially St Mirren.
Welcome hooptastic.

Some great memories guys.
Favourites are difficult. Love Street '86 and Celtic Park '88 are pretty special memories for me. The fact that the next one after that was Jansen in '98 should be enough to remind us that none should be taken for granted. I had my 16th, 18th, 21st, O'Grades, Highers, College years and graduation all during Rangers run of titles. I will forever celebrate each title as if it's our last and I think that's decent advice.
But we do take it for granted I suppose, O'Neill's first and second were definitely celebrated harder than his 3rd. Domination, while welcome, definitely detracts from the pleasure extracted. It's great to beat a 3 handicapper at golf for example, but beating the likes of taggsybhoy doesn't give the same buzz. But that's a subject for another day. (The competition aspect, not taggsy being crap at golf).
Winning the league is special and the day it is clinched a special day. I hope that we celebrate for the moment and don't brush it aside too quickly in anticpation of next year. There's a few red tops who will pursue exactly this line.
Enjoy it and milk it. Be happy all summer long. Smile wide and proud. Even with a humungous hangover on Monday. Walk tall. Defend your Celtic, your team against detractors.
STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS.
Hail Hail!

Well said Paul. My hatred for rfc knows no bounds. The emergence of the knuckle-dragging scum after the arrival of the mustachiod one at my ex work place, will live with me to the grave. Glory-hunting dobs the lot of them. The last seven years have been the golden years indeed. Those of us old enough and wise enough, know a good thing when we see it. Pretty football or not, this is OUR G.O.D. and long may it continue.

Yo! Pablo, long time no toones! I feel a weekend of revelry coming up.
Can you believe the tosh I came away with earlier in the week about hoping Heart did not win tomorrow?
-
As i didn't get a ticket for the Killie game, and as i was at the Hearts game last season, i am going to brave a visit to McChuills on Sunday to exorcise the demons of Black Sunday.
I remember calling me flatmate at half time, and telling him to put my bottle of Moét in the fridge for when i got home.
10 minutes after the final whistle that dark day, i realised that i had been kneeling on the floor, clutching the nearest chair leg, since the second SMcD goal, and trying not to shed any tears.
That bottle of champagne has remained unopened to this very day. I think i will spark it on Sunday evening as a reminder to savour every victory as if it is the only victory.
For all the joy, the pain, the tension, the disdain, the smiles, the tears, the laughs, the cheers. For all the emotion we have felt since the media panned us for our pre-season results, while rejoicing the 'new culture' and management style across the river, this weekend is our chance to savour the now.
Not the past or the future.
This weekend is about celebrating this season.....all the consecutive wins, the last gasp victories, the (relatively) unchartered European waters, our Manager outliving their much heralded new arrival.
The glory and the dream.
Faithful through and through.
Enjoy yourself bretheren, enjoy........
-

Don't get me wrong I will be lapping Sunday up (and maybe Saturday aswell :D). However, even though I think the league is special, I can't wait for the CL (my favourite footballing competition even when Celtic aren't involved) next year which is why I'm asking what people think is needed for it.

We're going to win the league[hooray]sometime soon-I have misgivings that it will be this weekend...
I don't know about working hard this season;it's certainly been hard work;a victory won by the roundheads rather than the cavaliers.
I do worry about next season.I worry about the'quality'of the football on display.Assuming Artur Boruc stays then we will need to find new personnel in the fullback, central midfield and striking positions. We need to come up with new tactics as well or we will be found wanting both at home and in Europe.
One thing that Celtic has never done well is to build on success. That needs to change, and soon.

Paul, thanks...... ;o)))
We all have our funny periods !!!!
Long may they revel in the mire that they have created. We are the Champions and let us not forget it. The pain of not being so, far out ways the pain of playing pretty football and winning f all. Our manager has and is lambasted by all and sundry. Why ???? Give me the title any time and I'm a happy camper.
I live for days like (hopefully), Sunday. I was fortunate to be at Martin's three league-winning victories, along with '86, and '88. Any league title is a victory and this is always achieved in the face of accepted adversity that is Scottish football and it's officials.
The moaners and groaners should realise this and be grateful accordingly. These have been salad days and long may they continue.

Nice post Paul. I suffered through the Souness/Smith era and blame that for my fondness for one or two too many beers on occasion. You had to do something to dull the pain.
We are spoiled by the recent success and whilst we are right to ask for entertaining football, the trophies and ascendancy over our neighbours on the South Side ought always to be first.
I was fortunate enough to get down for the Milan game from my exileinaberdeen and thought in that game and over the two legs the team and tactics were outstanding against a team who have been in the upper echelons of European football for a number of years. Indeed, I'll be cheering them on having taken some 16-1 about them earlier in the competition!!
We fell just marginally short against Milan and if we have as much money as you suggest and spend it wisely that might just be enough to make the diference.
Maybe I'm in a maudlin mood but your last sentence struck a chord with me. I lost some close relatives who were Celtic through and through at a time when Rangers were dominant. If this is the weekend then I'll be thinking of them and the years since their passing will melt away. I will remember them smiling.
-
Ban anyone bar Neil Lennon from hiting penalties on Sunday...
-
Where do all the mineshafters go when things are going well for Celtic?
Don't get me wrong, I don't miss them. I'm with Martin. We need a positive aura around the whole club. Nothing but positive vibes.
-
Michael,
Aiden McGeady is the only player in our team capable of running with the ball under that level of control at a decent pace.
I reckon we'll see a long mazy dribble ending with a goal from him soon.....we just need more mobility from our central midfieldes (and further up the park) to create enough space for him and others to gain opportunities like that.
Team 1 was successful, and on the whole entertaining.
Team 2 was successful, and won games they perhaps shouldn't have won, a trait that has served Celtic well over the years.
I look forward to a more mobile and fluid Team 3, albeit i would sacrifice that for Three-in-a-row.
Gordon Strachen would then be only the second Celtic manager to manage 3 consecutive league championship wins in the last 90 years.

I don't think there should be any ban on the site wih regard to other posters, just a request that this weekend we all celebrate together as one, regardless of underlying feelings or thoughts. We can take up the debate again at a more suitable point but it would be nice if right across the spectrum we all sang from the same hymn sheet* when the league is clinched. Like the Christmas game of footie in no man's land!
* Non denominational hymnsheet suitable to those of all faiths and none, with songs in praise of Celtic that are not prejudiced or sectarian. Available in audio-book format, braille and large text.

In response to Pablophanque's quote about hating RFC earlier on.
I will go along with your sentiments 100% and would like to add my tuppence worth to any TIC fan that doubts this sentiment.
As a 11 year old growing up in Govan during the 70's, I played for a well known Govan youth team which was split 50-50 between Tims and Prods, although the Tims in the team were far better players due to the fact that 90% of us would play against them at lunch times(schools) and more often than not we would win by at least 4 goals, and usually the fights thereafter.
Anyway one night at Football training all players were split into Tims and Proddy's and taken aside, which had never happened before as the management of the club had always tried to be impartial in the past.
The reason for the split was relayed to us Tims by one of the coaches who was a Tim himself and later resigned due to the news that we(the club) had been invited by the Darnel to a training and coaching session at their Albion training ground, and that they only required kids of a presbyterian background to attend from our club.
That was the most overiding memory of when the penny had finally dropped that i was actually hated because of my religion or beliefs and from that day on i swore to never again give that institution any thought or credit regardless of how much they may have changed their ways, and that is the reason i will always hate the SCUM that is the Darnel.
I nearly forgot to mention, there was a mass exodus of Tims from that team that never stepped foot back in the clubs door, and needless to say the club went belly up for a few years as far as results went.
-
Title memories.
My first in-the-flesh championship-winning game was the 4-2 game in May 1979.
When John Doyle walked, one of my pals said: "I still think we can do it."
To my shame, I disagreed, avowing that the bottle of Pomagne we had clubbed together to buy was wasted.
Everyone remembers Murdo's screamer, but the Colin Jackson own goal was the one that won the league, in my opinion.
And to prove that the support has a role to play, I want to claim a belated assist. Me and 15,000 others
J'explique.
When big Jackson tried to head back to his keeper, we could see that the big Girvan lighthouse was struggling. There was, naturally, a collective intake of breath, especially amongst those of us in the old Celtic end.
When the ball eluded McCloy, we all went bananas, of course. When we had sort of calmed down again, a guy near us swelled his chest out with pride and satisfaction and said: "We sooked it into the net."
-
Kev,
I did not think I banned anyone from posting.

Gavil Guy, I had forgotten all about that song. “While all my friends are getting older, I’ve stayed the same, you know it’s true”.
You better believe it.
Thanks for digging it up. Last time I heard it, it had no resonance.
Michael, aaaaaaaaaaaaaagh! “failure to build on the Seville momentum”, I am away to sit in a darkened room and repeat, “we lost £7m that year, we couldn’t afford to spend another £1”.
Mullenta, these are the times to do exactly that.
Cheers TTTT.

Have you been on the celebratory champers already. I didn't think I said I wanted St.Mirren to go down. Nor Dunfermline for that matter. Although as a Paisley boy I would have to say I definitely want Dunfermline to go down, especially with that John Yorkston (pantomine villian if ever there was one).
I just think that winning at Rugby Park would go a long way to wiping out the memories of cradling my 2 month old son in my arms as we pummelled the Kilmarnock defence but still came up short. He learned sweary words at a very tender age.
Not as painful as Murderwell but a close second.

that the board failed by not building on seville has been repeated so many times its become a truism, unfortunately
michael
the run to seville was a fantastic experience, but the uefa cup isnt really the big boys - thats the cl. it was great, but securing financial security for the club, while not as sexy was just as important. if we had carried on spending at the rate we had ben we would have been in serious danger and the board would not have been doing their jobs properly.
-
If not the board was it MoN who didn't build on Seville ? Or was it just one of those things ?
Saying that Seville is nice enough as it is without letting the builders loose :-)
-
Paul - Excellent post.
When all said and done it's about winning championships and we are on the brink of doing it again. I grew up in our 9-in-a-row era catching most games home and away towards the end of that run and then suffered through our period of decline. We are on the ascendency again and long may it continue.
Enjoy the weekend everyone - I hope we can play like champions on Sunday.

From the Yahoo Celtic page:
Kilmarnock player Momo Sylla has launched an attack on the critics of his former Celtic team-mate Neil Lennon.
Lennon's unflinching approach makes him a target for opposing fans and the Celtic skipper had a public row with a Hoops fan after the defeat by Rangers last month.
The Irishman is out of contract this summer, when he will turn 36, and some Celtic fans think another year in the Parkhead midfield is beyond him.
But Sylla jumped to the defence of Lennon, although he says there will be no room for sentiment when the pair face each other at Rugby Park on Sunday as the Hoops chase a second successive title.
The Guinea international said: "Lenny is a smashing guy. He's a good professional, he's a nice guy and he deserves his career. Not many people can do the job he has done.
"Lenny, the people who criticise are nothing, just don't listen to them. People who criticise say 'you have a lot of money, you deserve it'. People say 'you train two hours a day'.
"But they don't understand all the sacrifices you have to make to be a football player, and all the stress. You need to be a football player to understand, although we are privileged of course.
"I want to say to Lenny, 'I love you, you are a nice guy and you deserve all the things you have'."
Sylla, 30, was in the Celtic squad when they clinched the Scottish Premier league title in Kilmarnock in 2004 but insists playing against them is just like any other game.
A Celtic victory will clinch the championship, and it could be over beforehand if Hearts beat Rangers on Saturday.
Sylla said: "I will try to win the game for Kilmarnock, I'm not the type of guy to live in the past.
"I had a lovely time there but now the dressing room is different because most of the players left.
"For me it was more strange to play against Celtic for Leicester in pre-season because I left Celtic and a couple of weeks later I was playing against them. It was like training!
"Now it's a different squad. For me it's like any other game in the SPL.
"I think Celtic are going to be champions anyway. But football is football - even if I have my brother in front of me for another team I would give 100% against him.
"I will give 100% for Kilmarnock. After the game will be different, I will be able to talk to the guys about the good memories.
"But we need to remember it's a football game, nothing more. For 90 minutes you enjoy it, you try to win and after that life keeps going."

This is shaping up to be like one of those nights when all your mates are in the pub and everyone is in fine form and the beer is flowing and makes only for better patter.
I'm that giddy I could even tolerate Chic Young and his unev...
No. That's enough. I've just taken that too far.

Hi All,
Looking forward to the weekend tremendously, regardless of how we win the championship and I am sure we would love to have won it playing flowing football crushing all in our path, but the most important thing is to win it, full stop!
I remember having to "cry off" going to Celtic Park for the decider aginst Rangers in 1979 as I had to pick up my cousin from America from the airport, I have never forgiven the so and so as little did I know that the TV engineers (Huns Presumably) were going on strike. I remember sitting in the local hostelry waiting on the result supping beer like a madman, no radio coverage that night or teletext either in those days, we had to wait until we got the good news to the public telephone in the bar, thats right no mobiles either and then we went mental!
Love Street in 1986 a special memory as I was the only one of my crew who went, the rest had given up the ghost, what a day, bought Davie Hay a drink last weekend just for that memory.
Larsson and Bratbakk stopping ten in a row, celebrating in 2004 in Bangalore with Indian "Champagne" with a colleague from Stuttgart who I had been to the EUFA Cup tie with the previous year.
These occasions should not be taken for granted, there are plenty of us in my age bracket who remember the dark days too.
So big it up this weekend, cheer on the team and the manager, sing hale and hearty and have a "richt guid swally" if this takes your fancy, have Monday off, go berserk!
I will and try to persuade my wife to come with me on Sunday night, (also a season ticket holder still bemoaning the loss of Stilian Petrov for reasons other than football!) She will likely be too sensible to make a night of it but to all fellow hoops fans lap it up, there are no guarantees that we can do this indefinitely!
Hail Hail!

Hey Zbyszek I see you say you wish you could be at Rugby Park. Me too.
But are you by any chance going to watch it in Warsaw?
If so we could hook up and see it together.
What do you think?

leeds did that budgeting for success in the cl thing
if we budget for last 8 in the cl and then have another artmedia/basel then what? or finish 4th in the group?
i would rather we live within our means and still have a club to support.

More reasons for rejoicing.
I just got an offer from an unexpected source for a couple of tickets for Rugby Park.
The half time draw boycott is off.
Oh, and welcome back Pablo! I opened your first putfile video on Celtic to be met with a fairly offensive image. It's not your fault but when your chosen video loads, you get a stills preview of 4 other videos down the side. One of these contained the picture of a man engaged in solitary pleasures.
After seeing this image, I was gonna ask you to pull the link, but, apart from the Carry on overtones of such an instruction, I realised that the stills images are different each time you load the Celtic vid and, so far, the offensive image has not re-appeared. Did anyone else get this when they clicked on Pablo's 15.42 link or is it just me that gets this niche marketing?
