Only God Almighty can stop Strachan now

Let me tell you something you don’t know.

Apart from Jock Stein’s incomparable nine-in-a-row, yesterday was only the third time Celtic have retained the league in 90 years.

So many of our great players;

Jimmy Delaney, Jimmy McGrory, John Thomson;
Bertie Peacock, Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans, Patsy Gallagher;
the player Jock Stein, Willie Fernie, Sean Fallon ‘and Paul McStay’,
never won and retained a league title.

Celtic fans lived and died and never knew a day like yesterday,
fans who knew harder times than I hope you or I will ever see.

I have said that Jock Stein invented the Celtic that I know, but we have a pre-Stein heritage which is worth reaching out for.

Our forefathers celebrated the names above through a lot more shadow than sunshine. They made legends of, and sang songs about, each and every one of them. They lived through times when “if you know your history” was the most potent phrase in the Celtic lexicon, because glory was a historical concept.

While society changes around us and supporting a football team changes, influenced in some way by the internet, we need to try hard, harder than any of our forefathers, to make sure that supporting Celtic does not change.

We live in a time when people have no concept of their history. Their grandfathers fought in the Second World War, but precious few of them could tell you when it was, try asking if you don’t believe me.

We live in a time when adults behave like toddlers, demanding instant gratification because they live in a consumer society where they they have been taught to demand such.

We live in a time when culture is becoming homogenised, which in itself is no bad thing, but if you want the heritage of Celtic Football Club to remain relevant to the people who will flock to Celtic Park in the future, you and I have some work to do.

We are not part of the instant gratification society.

We know our history.

We are worthy heirs to those Celtic supporters who lived and died never seeing a day like yesterday.

We need to ensure our words, “win lose or draw” remain more than empty platitudes.

Jock Stein’s work was immense; nine league titles in a row gained not from outspending the competition, nor from strategic planning, but from his own ability as a coach, using a total of only 44 players. He gave us our first Generation of Domination since the Great War.

Our glory years are back again; this is our next Generation of Domination and I can now refer you to the record books to prove it. These times will shine out in history like the second coming of Celtic in 90 long years.

The past seven years have been great, but unlike in Stein’s time, this dominant period has not come from the genius of a single man, it was budgeted and planned for, which makes its longevity all the more likely. Those instrumental in the planning, Brian Quinn, Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawwell, deserve great credit.

Our manager, like our board before him, has endured the most begrudging acceptance from far too many people. Those among us who undermine his position must now cease and desist before God Almighty decides to punish them by giving them what they want.

For God Almighty is now the only one with the wherewithal to stop Celtic, today, the rest of Scottish football don’t even know where to begin their fight back.

Enjoy being a Celtic supporter, enjoy being champions.

TOKYO, April 23, 2007 (AFP) - Japanese dailies on Monday lauded midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura as history-making after his last-gasp goal gave Celtic the Scottish Premier League title.
"Shunsuke's victory bullet!" ran the headline of the Tokyo-Chunichi Sports newspaper a day after Celtic triumphed 2-1 at Kilmarnock in injury time.

"So Dramatic, Shunsuke," the Nikkan Sports daily said. "Nakamura's name has been engraved into the history of European football."

National newspapers carried Nakamura's achievement as the top item on their sports pages.

"Shunsuke's Historic Free Kick," the Sankei Shimbun said in its headline, with a picture of the 28-year-old swinging his shirt around for joy after his winning goal.

    Hear hear!

It was plain to see at the end of the defeat in the Stadio Guiseppe Meazza that the bulk of the Celtic support is certainly firmly "win, lose or draw". Likewise after the UEFA Cup Final in Seville.

As long as we continue to stand shoulder to shoulder through thick and thin, then we will be untouchable by the mere mortals of Scottish football.

Together we have built a global reputation, and together we have a responsibility to protect and uphold that reputation. In the eyes of the world it is the Celtic support, more than the team itself, that truly defines what Celtic is.

McGrain - Quicker than I've ever seen you at the bar or gracing any football pitch.....

From last article - Tontine Tim - fantastic post. Love hearing about where people were and what they were doing on the great days of our wonderful history. Including the 4-2 - greatest of them all for me. Well mibbe not - the relief in '98 maybe outweighed the joy of '79.

Well done Gordon Strachan and all the players.

but, u never know. maybe we will announce him as a bosman signing before the week is out. imagine what that would do to galvanise a newly re-bonded support. time to step up gear now signing wise. they can all take a wee rest now before the cup final, all except the boss whos now looking ahead to next season.

nice article , captures my view of our current position.

Presumably the grumblers can only really be our younger brothers and sisters in celtic.

While not an auld hand im old enough to remember the Wilderness Years of their 9 in a row and the rest of it.

Looking back I'm almost embarassed at the emotion and relief I felt at winning the Scottish cup against Airdrie -- how meaningless that seems now , but then it felt like a huge achievement.

I for one am hugely appreciative of what was achieved yesterday and throughout the season.

Sure it might not always have been pretty but its a football competition not a beauty parade.

Ive endured enough gallant losing to last me several lifetimes --

a result is a result is a result.

Enjoy it while we can !

Still feeling wonderful but am only now realising how wonderful John Kennedy must be feeling. Here's hoping he has many more wonderful days in a Celtic jersey.

Isn't life wonderful for Celtic supporters everywhere? I realise I must have had this feeling 21 times already but the present one always feels the best somehow.

As Martin says, yesterday almost eased the despair of that day in Motherwell. But I won't go there. That's the stuff of nightmares. Yesterday is the stuff of dreams.

A nice wee dig from our chairman

Celtic chairman Brian Quinn says the club will back Gordon Strachan with cash to strengthen his squad in the summer.

The Parkhead club retained the SPL title on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

The result maintained Celtic's domination of Scottish football since Strachan's arrival and Quinn is keen to ensure he keeps hold of the former Southampton and Coventry boss by providing him with funds to bolster his squad.

"Some players will leave, it happens to every club every season," Quinn told BBC Radio Five Live.

"We'll have to think about replacements and strengthening and we'll sit down with Gordon.

"He has been an absolute model in this respect, he never carps, he never complains and we work together.

"And we'll expect to bring in some further class footballers in the course of the summer.

"Gordon, I think, enjoys being at Celtic. There's no indication whatsoever that he wants to move.

"He's taken a wee while to establish himself with the Celtic fans and that's understandable.

"But they were singing his praises yesterday, and very deservedly in my opinion."

However, the Celtic chairman expects Rangers will spend big provide more of a challenge for their rivals next season.

Quinn added: "I think they're obliged to aren't they because they haven't really had a very successful period in the last couple of years.

"I think they are determined to get back into business again.

"They are a big club, we've never denied that. They provide competition of a very high order.

"If it means a more competitive Scottish Premier League next year so be it, but I don't mind who comes second."

    Gentlemen,

    A magnificent day yesterday.

Met Zbyszek for the first time and watched the game with him.

A great guy, and another good reason for cementing Polish/Scottish relations.

I’m also going to go see Legia with him. We can’t all get to Celtic Park regularly.

Then the game I thought we played reasonably but the seemingly likely draw would probably be a relatively fair reflection. My view.

Resigned myself to having to wait until next week and then …..Sunsuke San.

    Wonderful.

So.. not sure about the rest of you but I think some kind of tribute is in order.

My suggestion is a special song as follows:

It’s originally a Leonard Cohen song called Hallelujah but it was covered beautifully by Jeff Buckley.

    The Tune

I know the ‘boro fans stole it for Mark Viduka. I say we steal it back.

    So what about the words?

    Originally it was:

I heard there was a secret code
The day it played and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music do ya?
Well it goes like this the fourth the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
    The baffled king composing Hallelujah

    How about for our version?

I dreamt there was a Ninja Bhoy
With magic feet the real McCoy
A prince for Glasgow Celtic Nakamura
He scores at will to Strachan’s call
Kilmarnock sink and Man U fall
    Shunsuke san is Celtic’s Nakamura

Improvements welcomed but please tell me what you think guys.

    Stand up for the Champions.

    Enjoyed the post Paul.

I too remember the Darnels 9 in a row days, watching Wayne Biggins and Carl Muggleton, wondering if I would ever see a Celtic team that my old man raved about through the 60's and 70's.

During this time out whole future was in question let alone worry of trophies.

    Step forward Fergus McCann.

I know a lot of people did not apprecaite the work Fergus carried out during his tenure, however without this, we would not be anywhere near where we are now. Would Dermot Desmond have invested? Would MON have come? Would we have the likes of Brian Quinn and Peter Lawell? Just remember Terry Cassidy !

I don't know what others think, however I for one would love to see the man in the cap back to at least take a bow, for I also remember him getting booed when we stopped the Darnel making it 10 when we raised the flag.

Fergus is possibly the most important man in our recent history and I would dearly love to see him honoured in some way.

Hail Hail to the Champions !!

Your thread is very stirring piece of writing.

Most will answer your call to arms.

I am 43 ,i do not need to go back to the 1940's to recall real hardship as a Celtic supporter.

Rangers 9 in a row is still very fresh in my mind.No trophies over a six year period until 1996,still cuts to the bone.

Complacency may be as big a threat as Rangers.
Make no bones about it, we will have to improve to retain the championship.
I want to savour our current success at present.

It has been a strange season for me.

I cannot remember one where we have been so successfull on the pitch, yet i have felt as though it was an endurance test, more often than i have enjoyed it.

However i am sure that Mr Strachan,Quinn and Lawell, are already planning ahead for next season.

I do hope Arthur Boruc remains at the club.Mark Brown is not as good a keeper.

Still, i don't want to get too wrapped up in tommorrow's concerns.

Today i am enjoying the SWEET smell of success.

Just like Paul67 (sorry, Paul, I forgot to congratulate you!) I'll be turning 40 this year. I wonder what else happened 40 years ago?
Seems like most events in my life can be linked to an event in Celtic's rich history

*missed your phosting last night TC just after mine so congrats, just came in this morning to hear that one of my employees had a wee girls yesterday as well, she's the same age as you and Paul so I was a wee bit concerned about her.

I have three lassies and when I was both your ages my ouldest was starting Uni, and just like you two she has a major birthday at the end of this year, she almost had the middle name of Lisbon, Martin42, your da and me all have very good reason to enjoy the year of '67.

When as a wee bhoy in short trousers at St. Marys I first heard the line "we'll be there to give the bhoys a cheer when the League flag flies" I thought not in my lifetime as we were in the midst of the years in the wilderness, now thanks mostly to a mhan who's first words on leaving the field when with Albion Rovers was "how did the boys get on today", not the bhoys, I've now lived through 21 titles.

"It's not his creed nor his nationality that counts, but the mhan himself"...............and he gave us James McGrory and Paul McStay.

Just catching up... not managed to read all the comments yet..

Many Happy Returns for the weekend Paul, it was mine last weekend. I was obviously that little bit older and could take in the Lisbon final in a bit more detail ;-) 67 a good year!!

When I watched the game, admittedly with a little frustration and anxiety at times yesterday, I couldn't stop thinking about how many new & young players were in that side

    Boruc 2nd season
    Caldwell 1st season
Kennedy 1st game in 3 years
    Pressley 1st few months
    O'Dea 1st season
    Hartley 1st few months
    Lennon Old bugger
    Graveson 1st season
    Naka 2nd season
    JVOH 1st season
    Riordan 1st season

    Subs

    Jarosik 1st season
    McGeady Old bugger
    Miller 1st season

That is quite remarkable and shows that WGS has done it the hard way.

I really feel that the difference in some of our play this season from last has been us missing Maloney and the type of direct penetration he gave us.

We have also missed the goals from Shaun, BBJ & Stan and WGS has still delivered the league.

The change in the squad and the average age of the back 4 shows we are heading in the right direction.

Some of the football has been nervy of late but who cares, because we're CHAMPIONS.

Lets put Rangers in their place in a couple of weeks, win the Scottish Cup and look forward to the media trying to frighten us once again, with their stories of who will turn us down and what World stars will sign for the Darkness.

What was that phrase abou a Chase?

I'm as delighted as anyone else at finally getting over the finishing line, and in such dramatic fashion too. It almost felt better than a 4 - 0 win.

And it was great fun to pass Ibrox last night and see two cars tearning around the car park with Champions flags waving out the windows!

The morning after, though, a few issues come to mind.

Big John Kennedy. Such kudos to him, it was great to see him back after so long. Thought he played very well too, won lots of headers and did the simple things well. Too early to judge him of course, but with a full pre season under his belt I think he will be looking really good next season.

What does Pierre Doumbay need to do to get a game? If we're not going to play him when he is the only fit full back we have, why did we sign him? Is he one for next season?

As we all know, we need another striker up front with JVoH. I've never been a fan of one up front and look forward to seeing who we sign in the summer.

Let's hope the reserves win today and really stick it to them.

And the youth team have a hard job making it a clean sweep again this year. From the CFC web site:

"THIS season’s Youth League title race will go right to the wire after a day of high drama involving both title aspirants.

"Going into today’s game against Dunfermline, Celtic’s challenge looked dead and buried after a disappointing league defeat by Hearts, but John McLaughlan’s Bhoys rallied with an outstanding performance and merited their 4-1 away victory.

"Meanwhile, in Dundee, the game between United and league leaders Rangers was reaching a close with the Ibrox side trailing 3-1 before they were awarded two late penalties, the second of which was ‘hotly disputed’ by the home side, to earn a 3-3 draw.

"The results put both teams level on points going into the final league game next weekend, although Rangers enjoy a slender goal difference advantage."

    C'mon the young bhoys!

    albert - pure champion, mate

first post after a fantastic afternoon in killmarnock.

i thought the fans were absolutely magic yesterday, as were the players after the game. i particularly enjoyed the big song wgs got when he came down our end and the way he had no idea how to deal with it. nice touch pulling the wee boy out of the crowd and gettgin jfk out on his own in front of the fans. lump in my throat and a wee tear in my eye. i really do get theh impression that there is no fake modesty in wgs. he seems like the most honorable of men. as andy gray would say, take a bow, son, take a bow.

also loved looking down at the final whistle and seeing people dotted around the killie fans trying their best not to go too mental at the final whistle. but a true champion cant hide it.

the outpouring of elation might have had somethign to do with them manner in which the game and the league was won, but it was a truly special experience. and it was a pure celebration, there was very little sneering at the others, either those at the game or those who would have been watching at home hoping we slipped up.

its funny what being a champion can do for your well-being. today was the best hangover i have had in years.

Wasn't trying the oneupmanship (I'll assume it is a word)just noticed that the particular phrase has been strangely non-existent for the last while.

Certainly wasn't trying to quote it back to them, it wasn't intended in that way.

In anycase, statistics obviously don't tell the whole story of anything, they may have more championships at the moment (is one of them not really a half championship anyway??),but I think it was an article here last week that stated we had won 21 out of the last 42 titles.

So to that effect, the chase was a very long time ago.

would be a cracking signing, he's scored a lot of goals this season for them.

    wg

you probabyl knwo this already but the fron t page of the sun in england today has the headline that the queen is a gooner.

i read an article in the financial pages of one of the broadsheets yesterday whcih suggested that a lot in the group of "smaller shareholders" - the group of people outside the main shareholders who hold a significant number of the shares collectively - were unhappy with the board. specifically they were angry that ph-w and fiszman and the double barelled lady hadnt been willing to even listen to what the american had to say. it looks like ph-w's comments about "those sort of people" suggests that there will never be any sort of amicable agreement between them

i also read somewhere that the board felt that dein had gone behind their back by apporaching the double barrelled lady about the possibility of her selling her shareholding to the american, without discussing it with the other board members. also that dein was negociating with the american without any knowledge of the other board memebers. seems like ph-w being the old school sort did not take kindly to what he saw as a betrayal. the language arsenal have been using couldnt be much stronger from them.

it seems dein differed from the board, in that he didnt want to put the club into huge debt by moving to an expensive stadium. with the emergence of chelski, and liverpool getting the huge investment they are about to get, he was worried that they would never again be ableto compete with them on the park. hence the interest in the american buyer and the extra cash he could put at wengers disposal.

i am a bit confused about this - wenger has said repeatedly that he has been given mnoney to spend but not spent it because it wouldnt make sens to bring all the talent through and then buy expensive ready-made players who would eb in front of them in the queue.

given the amount of hard work that the board have put in with the stadium move, restructuring the debt and the fact that the future looks so exciting with the young players, selling would seem highly unlikely to me. arsenal has been in the hands of the hill-woods for four generations now. selling goes against everything they have been buliding for and totallly against their philosohpy

i think they'll hold on. i really hope so - i cant afford to go to the emirates hardly at all any more as it is, and if it was owned by some franchise owner thousands of miles away that would just about be it for me.

but as you say, money talks and if the american gets his pr right the fans might be convinced.

ive mentioned this before but MON tried to get saviola on loan.
it was close, but believe it or not he opted for monaco.
he then went to sevilla last season on loan.
during last season he was intervied in one of the spanish sports
papers about returning to barca at the end of the season and his
    loan deals.
he said in the article, along the lines:
that looking back, that his move to monaco was probably not the right career move, he should have moved to celtic when he had the opportunity as he thought it would have boosted his career.

    so theres maybe hope.

his stock does seem to be a bit higher now than it was at that time so i dont know if he would get a better offer now than back then, and for me there would be questions about a south american in scotland. but i do seem to remember reading that he wasnt one of the high earners at barca so i reckoin we could afford him and he was pretty special for barca when eto'o'o'o' was injured.

wouldnt it be great to sign a player of his pedigree in the summer?
