Great news on JK.
-
It's fantastic news B_M,
He and O'Dea seem to be the brightest prospects, and with Scott Cithbert coming through, our defence (including pace for what seems to be the first time in my lifetime) looks as if it could be solid for a few years to come.
Now about a goalscorer..........
-
Hope JFK does stay instead of being farmed out. Best place for him is in the Hoops.
-
I missed the last thread so let me say a big THANKS to the great that is Neil Lennon.
-
Paul,
As for the headline.....is it Paradise found, or Paradise rediscovered?
Either way, it's more champion news
-
Paul
Any idea who you think the new captain will be? I think McManus would be a popular choice, but having said that,if Gordon feels he isnt guaranteed a starting place next season perhaps he will go for someone else. But who?
Celtic_Gucks
-
McGraininspain (the artist formally known as McGraininleicester) - I'm doing fine.
How did your Saturday night go when I left you at in the Hampton some weeks ago? Tell me you went out?
Well Done John Kennedy and Well Done CELTIC.
Good Luck to the young Bhoys tonight.
Hail Hail on this fine CHAMPION Day.........
-
Celtic Gucks, I am pretty sure Stephen McManus will be our new captain.
-
Paul - no truth in JFK getting loaned out for a season then?
-
TheLeftWinger - from previous thread - I take you point about Neil's acute positional excellence enabling him to intercept and tackle from a position of advantage and we both agree that is down to his discipline, both emotional and positional.
Maybe some thing from which both Hartley and Gravesen can learn.
Baz67 - nah I was on yer tail. Great to see Mrs. Baz67.
Pau67 - from last post, any thoughts about archiving yesterday?
-
McGrain - Was it home to bed after picking up a take away? Bet you were popular ?
When you over next?
-
MuppetBhoy, talk is about JK being loaned out for the summer, back at Celtic Park in August.
McGrainin.. aye, good call.
-
John Kennedy can be one very proud bhoy right now. He has made a fantastic comback from a horrific injury.
He can be a future Celtic captain if he continues his development.
-
Paul 67, agreee about jk however
Gary Caldwell's ball playing skills are a total myth his pass completion rate is poor for anything over 10-15 yards.
-
Paul - So we might have JFK playing alongside Henke at Helsingborgs possibly?
;o)
/Bishop B
-
great to see him back and looking so imposing on sunday
and it would be great if he could turn into the euro class centre half many of us have been looking for for a while. we'd save on a transfer fee and have another real home-grown hero. if he shows half the courage on the pitch he has over the last 3 years then we'll have some player on our hands.
-
I Hope the following -
Kennedy is not loaned out - he is good enough to play in the Celtic team and if he gets anywhere near back to his best he is our best Centre half by a country mile!
McManus is NOT made captain - because he isn't good enough. When everyone is fit he won't be an automatic choice.
I would make Boruc captain - give him extra responsibility and incentive to stay.
-
With McManus, O'Dea, Pressley, Cuthbert & Balde (anyone remember him?) all vying to play alongside Kennedy next season, what does the future hold for Gary Caldwell?...
Hmmm.
Gary Caldwell, the new Neil Lennon?!!!
Talking of Neil Lennon, there is a danger that the meeja might actually start writing something positive
about him now that he is on his way out. And perhaps even an admission that the vitriolic abuse to which he has been subjected ever since he set foot on Scottish soil was, in fact, nothing to do with his "combative style of play" after all!
-
Len Brennan, not unless Henke has become a defender!
-
Well said on Gary Caldwell Paul, I fully expect he and Stephen 'Captain' McManus to start the season as our first choice central defence. Back in September and October they were developing into a fine partnership - so good that Boruc commented on the improvement from the previous year.
Far too often people have exaggerated Caldwell's 'mistakes' - he made one error in Lisbon and has been crucified for it. Likewise McManus, who was utterly flawless in the Champions League over 8 games yet people say he's not even good enough for Scotland...watching a different game from me (and his manager, Carlo Ancelloti, Massimo Oddo and national team manager as well for that matter)!
Once again I'll say it, with McManus, Caldwell, Kennedy, O'Dea and maybe Cuthbert we are blessed with competion in the defence. It takes time for partnerships to grow and develop here more than any other area on the park - an ideal scenario for us.
-
The three top centre halfs on our books are Balde, Kennedy, and O'Dea - a mixture of fitness and experience would have them far ahead of McManus, Caldwell, and Pressley.....
-
Well done to JFK for the new contract, hope it is the first of few.
And well done to Celtic as well.
They stood by him through three years of hell.
Hopefully we will now see him contue from where he left off.
You never know, his injury experience, may actually help in the long run.
-
BigChipSuk - Would this be the BOBO you're talking about :-)
-
If you add an A an I and N to the above,it may very well read okay!!!
-
Can someone do me a favour and post a link to the famous picture of Martin O'Neill & Neil Lennon in front of the Celtic fans at Ibrox?
It would be much obliged......
-
26th? I'm getting closer to the podium by the day!
-
Watchow, Len Brennan,
It's rumoured we're trying to line up a game with Chicago Fire in July in addition to the Denver game.
-
BigChipSuk
I always thought Henrik was one of our best defenders when he was with us. There aren't many in the game better at providing the first line of defence.
-
Baz67, yes.
Nice one!
-
Martinobhoy, true. But he'd still be playing in front of JFK rather than alongside him.
However, if the opposition get a freekick just outside the penalty area, will we put Kennedy in the wall. Imagine the tabloid headlines if he was pole-axed by the shot at goal...
-
july 19th V major league all stars
july 21st V chicago fire

TheLeftWinger - Best I could do at short notice.

-
BigChipSuk - Good one mate, but then again this is Henke we're talking about so I think he'd give you a good shift no matyter were he played.. ;o)
/Bishop B
-
That's Champion Baz, cheers
-
What do you all think of Celtic's new black kit? Can't say it does anything for me!
-
Len
Agreed. Wasn't there a game at Dens when Didier got sent off for the heinous crime of being faster than the Dundee forward and Henrik ended up playing almost at left-back?
-
I am truly delighted that we have signed John Kennedy to a new contract.
I was expecting a "deer in the headlights" reaction after three years out, but how glad I was to be prove so wrong, he played with poise and confidence. Well done John!

-
Non sequiter here chaps from a long time reader but first poster....does anyone know if we need to pre-qualify for CL next season? Thanks in advance.
-
martinobhoy - sure did mate.
And that diving little eejit that got Didier sent off... none other than Nacho Nohope as I remember!
/Bishop
-
Sorry, sequitur...sequitur.
-
MartinOBhoy,
The Dundee forward = cheating, greasy, spotty wee nyaff by the name of Nacho Novo.
He actually tried to trip up Agathe but got caught up in his own feet and fell over.
I was raging that day. Dianbobo got us out of jail with a late header as far as i remember.
-
Lardo66
I believe we play in the final qualifying round.
-
Paul67
This time next season with 3 in a row in the bag we'll be giving the youngsters a chance.
-
The Scotsman article has a very funny riposte from 'Cardiffbhoy' to a claim that wee Barry had more awards than Neil Lennon, citing among BF's achievements 'many Man of the Match Awards at Blackburn':
Man of the match awards at Blackburn!
Never mind your European or World Footballer of the year awards , I bet Ronaldhino always wanted one of them.
Since Lennon came to Celtic in Season 2000/2001 the medal count is as follows,
League - NL 5 Bammy 2
Cup NL 3 Bammy 2
League Cup NL 2 Bammy 3
European Finals NL 1 Bammy 0
Blackburn MOTM NL 0 Bammy Hunners
Managers Sacked NL 0 Bammy 1
I laughed out loud at work when I read this.
Can we invite this talented Welsh person on to CQN?
-
Len / Theleftwinger
Cheers. All I remembered was that it was never a sending off. I had forgot the Dundee player that was involved.
Why does it not surprise me that it was Novo?
-
Delia
Cardiffbhoy's already here....
-
Michael__67,
Do you memorise every comment regarding Neil Lennon so they can be used for evidence and later relied on in court?
-
Two thirds of Lenny's Celtic goals tally have been at the expense of Dunfermline............... you know it makes sense.....
-
SOAL -
daft fiver ?
-
Thank you El Diego Bhoy.
Are there official stats as to who gets MOM awards? Is it not the case that Sponsors and commentators quite often pick different MOMs? Home announcers never pick the opposition players even if all of their own are pure mince. The least worst Blackburn Player award? The leanest of the steak mince I reckon.
-
WG,
Michael__67 owes me £40, and there was a condition on it that it was to be repaid the next time Neil Lennon scores for Celtic.
I can only hope your statistics have a bearing on things. Surely if we get any penalty from now until Hampden 26th May, Neil Lennon should be hitting it?
-
LeftWinger
That £40 is safe.
Lenny has never let me down - and wont start now. Lenny WILL score before the end of the season...
-

I quite literally stumbled across this in the Daily Ranger today(on-line folks),written by Sally McCoist. "I've heard it said over and over again that Lennon is the victim of bigots. It's claimed the reason he is singled out for abuse from supporters is because he's a Catholic from Northern Ireland.
I don't buy that for a minute. As I recall, he was jeered almost everywhere he went as a Leicester player".
Does anyone know if this it true? Does Neil mention this being jeered everywhere in his autobiography?
-
Gucks
McMoist obviously getting Lenny mixed up with Robbie Savege.
Easily done as they look so alike.

Don't forget the Scottish Youth Cup Final at Hampden Park tonight, Celtic v Rangers. Evidently they are expecting a crowd of over 15,000 for the occasion.
It's our wee Hoops' chance to demoralise the Rangers Youths before the Youth League last day show-down a week tomorrow, where Celtic's 4 year tenure as Champions hangs by a thread!
Rangers (44pts; GD+26) play Hibs at home while Celtic (44pts; GD+23) entertain Falkirk.

This may have started to happen once neil decided to stick his head into the boot of Englands golden boy at the time Mr A Shearer

Great news for John Kennedy and all in Timdom, the big man was immense on Sunday, remarkable that he looked like he had never been away.
I am not in the Gary Caldwell fan club as a centre half I am afraid, gives the ball away too frequently and his range of passing is frankly not that good. Prone to errors in trying to play too much football from centre half. Could he be Lenny's replacement? If Gordon Strachan is thinking about this a couple of games in this position before the seasons end might be useful but I doubt Lenny will be dropped for any of the last few games.
Will be interesting to see the line up on Sunday, McManus back in I am sure why not as a partner to Kennedy? The league is done and dusted give the bhoys a chance!
Hail Hail!
RobinBhoy
-
Let's not forget Darren O'Dea who also deserves a wee run in the first team.
Has he played enough games to merit a medal yet?
-
vclxi
I don't think Darren has had or will have enough games left to get a medal.
-
Good point vclxi (if that is indeed your real name).
Is it 10 appearances that you need to qualify for a medal? I seem to recall that number from somewhere.
If so, then Darren is OK with 8 full appearances and 5 subs (from e-tims).
Those needing a few games are:
Bobo - 6 to date (unlikely!)
Paul Hartley - 6 to date.
And I think a certain Mr Maloney made 9 appearances, so rightly misses out!
-
vclxi
go with Gordon_j.
I was fool enough to come to my conclusion using the official site amoung others.
-
The first thing we need to do with our CB’s is to get rid of Bobo. At His cost we should be getting better than him. Image what an extra £28k per week can do to our fullback or central midfield positions.
-
Celtic Gucks 14.39
I can assure you Lennon was not treated in anything like the way he is in Scotland, when he played at Leicester. It simply didn't happen.
Systematic, sustained and pre-planned abuse in the stadia? Nope. Repeated physical attacks in the street? Nope. Let's not even talk of the gutterdwellers.
I watched him for 5 years and he got stick from Geordies for a bit after he had the audacity to put his heid under Shearer when Shearer happened to stamp forcefully in a hiedward direction. But that apart, McCoist is entirely wrong.
And why is the assistant manager (or whatever he is) of Rangers making comment at all on this matter? How on earth is his opinion at all appropriate or relevant?
Edward - your view?
I actually think these comments only fan the flames of bigotry and are dangerous.
McCoist should stick to what he is good at, whatever that might be.
McGrain
-
from eurosport
"Victory on Sunday at Kilmarnock will secure a 41st title for Celtic but Hartley, who joined from Hearts at the end of January, has only featured in five league games.
"It means everything to me. At the start of the season I didn't imagine I would be at Celtic and going to pick up a league winner's medal...if I play in the next five games.
This was posted before Golden Sunday. So doing the maths it's 10 you need for a medal
-
McgraininSpain:
Line of the day: "McCoist should stick to what he is good at, whatever that might be."
-
McGarininspain,
I think the article is actually by Hately but has been attributed to Mc Coist. An apology I can see forthcoming !!
-
Welcome Lardo66. We sure do need to qualify for the CL next season.
Danny, :-)
-
McGraininSpain :- I haven't read the article so can't give much of an informed opinion however what I would say is that like anyone who wishes to have their views presented in the media he should always double then triple check his facts. Normally the amount of abuse a player takes varies in proportion to how effective he is or how he is seen by opposition fans, sadly there are more sinister elements at work in the abuse Mr Lennon has had to take.
WinningGemmell :- I was looking through old records and I noticed that in 1936 a Winning. G played a couple of games for Rangers, could you by any chance be related? The public should be told lol, this would explain much of yopur knowledge of some of the more esoteric aspects of secret societies ;-)
-
The big story on Real Radio re Neil Lennon...
Alan Rough thinks he received 'too much coverage' in the press today and that it was 'over the top'.
Desperate stuff.
-
Paul67,
If JK recaptures the form as he did before the injury he will displace McManus with ease.
McManus has came on leaps and bounds however after being at Rugby Park on Sunday the guy looked if he never been away.
He strolled through it. I couldn't believe what i was seeing. Who knows what will happen. I came away from the game saying that people that we could have potentially looking at our centre back partnership fora number of years in Kennedy and O Dea.
If these two push on in pre season then McManus and co better watch out.
This would be my preferred partnership in the future.
As with regards McManus getting made captain he will probably get it as there is'nt any other candidates. I don't expect it to be a long term thing though as i reckon he won't be featuring as much with the emegence of O Dea and JK back.
I still expect the manager to go for a centre half in the summer so that would bring the total to 7
Although i expect Bobo to depart.

Talking of "tackling Ronaldinho" (see the end of Paul's article), here are a few special tackles, including our own Lenny on Jan Kozak in the home game with Artmedia (at 1'45"). Note however the most vile challenge of all at around the 3'56" mark!
Please be advised of explicit lyrics on the soundtrack.

re neil lennon in england
all this nonsense about him being the target of opposition fans abuse is something i have read rankgers fans come out with as some sort of excuse for their behaviour towards him.
the comments are completely incorrect. i watched him play for leicester several times and he received no abuse at all. playing in the same team as robbie savage meant that the opposing fans were too busy giving him stick to bother about anyone else. when he was in the prem i dont remember him having any sort of bad reputation at all.
shameful atempt to ingratiate himself with the animals.
-
Now all googled up and back in the saddle .
Mixed emotions this last week with the departure of Neil Lennon and the great news on John Kennedy's deal , it will make Sunday even more special.
I hope JFK takes note of the loyalty of the club during traumatic times unlike the Maloney, Miller & Stubbs ne'er do wells

Edward - we agree on the sinister nature of the abuse Neil has had to take in Scotland and hopefully McCoist has not made these statements. Whether he has or not, I still he should stick to what he is good at, whatever that is.
NAFOS - ¡Hola, amhigo!
watchow - I lived in Leicester for many years. Mostly West End but also up in Clarendon Park. Followed the Foxes with all the enthusiasm that an ex-pat Celtic supporter can muster from the Little years through until the move over here 4 years ago. Still my English team and have many fond memories of numerous Wembley trips for play-off and League Cup finals. You?

Any updates on the Youth Final? Was wanting to go but couldn't make it, think I might be glad now. Hope we don't start to slip in terms of quality at a young level, I know it's a young squad and they missed Sheridan for a few weeks but in previous seasons they dominated that U19's league.

i'm a part-time gooner - i used to go to all the home games when i wasnt at cp and went away as well.
i remember one game in particular at highbury cos its without doubt the coldest i have ever been at a game - boxing day the season i think they were top or near enough. savage spent the whole game winding up the fans even though his team got beat 5-0. a mate never turned up so i sat freezing for an hour on my own and then had to get to the pub before i died.
lenny never got any stick from the gooners

Oh dear oh dear oh dear

Media really going overboard about the youth league, don't remember the same coverage over the last few years when Celtic were doing the clean sweep.
I wonder what's different about this year?
-
EU
That'll be youse turned the corner again?

Seems that a rangers player called Lennon has scored a hat trick in the Youth Cup final.
I'm sure we can look forward to him being booed at every ground in Scotland because of that surname.
-
Sack the board .
-
Don't read the Daily trash...but coming from any Orange B'd that Lenny hasn't been that badly treated...whether mccoist or that other prat...
Typical Orange B'ds see no evil, hear no evil in their own back yard....not one of them would last a new york minute in Lennon's shoes - they'd be crying to the press & Uncle David......waste of skin, every one..
Their glad to see the back of him cause they couldnae beat him!
I'm glad Lenny has decided the time is right - I want to be able to look back at his record without groaning about his last year.....
He's had a few off days this year with petulent outbursts, arm band nonsense - which I have no time for in any pro sportsman, least of all an inconic one. Otherwise, he's been a class act.
Hail Hail Lenny...come back real soon.
Rant over - normal even handedness resumes... ;-)
-
watchow - of course you are - I'd picked up as much from previous posts.
You might remember the Denis Bergkamp match. Certainly the best game of football I saw in England. Bergkamp hat-trick including the famous killing the ball stone dead knocking it up and over Walsh before making it 3-1 Gooners with 90 on the clock. Leicester grabbed 2 in injury time to snatch an incredible and unlikely point.
Some good contests over the MON years.
For the young lads, a character building result that should serve them well when they are regularly stuffing the huns in the big team in a few years time.
-
5-0 Strachan must go ;-)
-
mcgrain
probably he best hat trick ever.
was the 3-3 game where walsh and ian wright had a fight at the end or was that another game.
i hated steve walsh - he was a bigger wind-up than savage. mind you i would have stuck on eon wrighty if i was playing against him.
wrighty tucked me up when he came to cp. i told anyone who would listen that we were about to see goalscoring the likes of which scotland had rarely seen. i should have listened to the west ham fans who called him showbiz gooner *&^% when he was there. i heard him on the radio talking to the chairman the other day and he didnt seem in the slightest bit interested. mind you he did say that playing for celic against the other scottish clubs was much harder than people think.
-
SFTB :- This year we have turned so many corners we are stuck on a roundabout :-)
Next year however will be a straight road to the title.
One Mr lennon enters the twilight of his career, another enters the dawn of his, looks like the circle of life applies to football as well.
I wonder if there is anywhere else that a youth cup final could attract that sort of crowd.
-
Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I was looking at the new home strip on the official site and noticed it is 2007-08.......a 1 year strip instead of the usual 2 ?
Edward, not only do I think that a youth cup final could attract a bigger crowd somewhere else, I believe it will happen tonight elsewhere in Britain.
-

Edward
How will we recognise you at Paul's night?
And don't say you'll be wearing you know what colours:o)
-
EdwardUrsus: You guys may have a good youth side this season but you obviously don't know your history.
Haven't heard the official crowd from Hampden yet, but have seen 11,000 mentioned on here.
Edward questions where else could attract the sort of crowd Hampden housed tonight- the very simply answer is: Yes, England does - far bigger youth gates on a regular basis.
Only just over a month ago Arsenal attracted an incredible 38,187 for an FA Youth Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester United.
That is the record for a an FA Youth Cup match as far as I know.
But there have been loads of other crowds down south that would dwarf the Hampden crowd if it is in fact circa 11,000.
Here are some of the top ones:
31,037 - Leeds United v Manchester United in the 1993 Youth Final second leg
30,562 - Manchester United v Leeds United in the 1993 Final first leg
24,000 - West Ham United v Coventry City in the 1999 Final second leg
20,600 - Liverpool v West Ham United in the 1996 Final second leg
20,190 - Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur in the 1995 Final second leg
18,651 - Aston Villa v Everton in the 2002 Final second leg
The 31,037 who saw Leeds United win 2-1 on the night to secure a 4-1 aggregate success against Manchester United in 1993 was the record attendance for any FA Youth Cup match until last month's Arsenal gate.
An estimated 30,000 also saw Everton win the 1965 Final against Arsenal at Goodison and there were crowds close to 30,000 at Wolves (1954), Blackburn (1959) and Preston (1960).
And when q George Bes-inspired Manchester United won the 1964 Final against Swindon, there were 25,000 at Old Trafford for the second leg.
By the way what is all this fuss about the Youth Cup and the Youth League?
What about the Reserve League where Celtic have won the title by the length of Sauchiehall Street and more with Rangers nowhere to be seen?
-
Spoke to pablo just after full time, apparently the wee huns deserved their victory. Look on the bright side - it will convince minty and wattie that they don't have to spend, that in a few years time it will fall into their laps. Good, let them think that.

A pitiful performance by the young bhoys, and a pitiful performance by the majority of the support, who started leaving in droves from 3-0 onwards.
Why bother turning up?
I'm more annoyed with those so called supporters than the players tonight.

-
Just back from Hampden. Game reminded me of Scotland v Saudi U-16 final from about 17 years ago. The mini orcs looked double the size of us height and width. Also a lot fitter and faster. Only saving grace tonight is that it wisnae 10.Was wanting to know if the average age of the sides was the same. Does anybody know? If so well you can tell who practices in a state of the art training complex and who trains on a muddy field.
-
Joe the very same thought went through my mind during the game. It was like the 2nd half of that young scotland game all over again....minus the moustaches.
It could have been worse, it could have been a 1st team game.
-
Tobi :- fair enough I was probably guilty of hyperbole, I just find it amazing that a youth cup final can attract more than almost all of the senior clubs in the country.
EDB :- I'll be the one whose eyes are too far apart compared to the rest of you ;-)
I'm just under 6ft, glasses and a beard with an Ayrshire accent, you will probably find me nailed to the floor at the door for cleaning your shoes on the way in :-)
SeanSouth :- OK not only am I guilty of hyperbole bt also of complete ignorance of the facts, I plead guilty to lazy posting :-) On the fuss over the youth cup and league, I agree that they come below the reserve equivalents but to a starving man a morsel is a banquet :-)
Noel90 :- LMAO it's nice to see we have found a use for Mr Sebo
-
Just back from Hampden too.
It was as bad as it sounds.
Rangers came out the traps all fired up and for me the game was finished when the second goal went in after about 15 minutes. They hit the post just before too.
All three second half goals came via the counter attack.
They were more direct, they looked stronger and they had no nonsense defenders.
Three out of their back four were booked.
Given the respective League positions we are much better than we showed tonight however this will be a game all the young Celts will never forget for all the wrong reasons.
Let's just hope it proves to be a character building exercise for those of them who make it.

Joe
Only 2 of the team are not elligible to play U19s next season for Celtic, not sure what the age of the Rangers team is but it's no excuse really.
As far as I know the Rangers team included a lot of the young players brought up from down south (Furman, Lennon etc. Edward can you confirm that?)
Hope the scouting system has been looking far and wide for 16-17 year olds as well as first team players.
-
Ardoch , spot on with the crowd disappearing with 20 minutes to go . Disgraceful . Might have got hammered , but there was no lack of effort . Deserved a round of applause at the final whistle at least . Players were distraught at the end and there was lucky if there was a 500 folk left. Gotta to remember they are boys . We didnae cover ourselves in glory with some of the chants either.
-
Edward
Ha ha. Well done tonight.
Looking forward to meeting you and I'm certain you'll enjoy the craic.

Curly-Hatton closes at 7pm. Dont know if "live" is the correct word to use for my existence in this hick village. Nah, thats not fair, not too bad a place. Lived in a lot worse.
-
Joe i was sat near the main choir and they were all about 14, daft wee bhoys who don't know better and probably thought they were being 'cool'.
Half wits.
With "5-0 and ye cannae sing" they had a point mind you.
-
Men against bhoys today. Thought the goalie sold the first three and a needless penalty for the 5th didn't help. They were certainly well ahead in development, both physically and in a football sense.
And has been mentioned, shame on all those who couldn't be bothered staying till the end. Disgraceful.
Faithful through and through............Hmmmmmmmmmm !

Guys
Chill out. The big occasion is this Sunday.
STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS
-
Interesting to see the teams from the last Celtic v Rangers Youth Cup Final of 1997 :-
Celtic :-
Jim Gallagher, Philip McKeown, Paul Borland, John Convery, John Potter, Gerry Crossley, Charles McGuinness, John Paul McBride, Mark Burchill, Barry Elliott and Brian Vaugh. sub used Jamie Smith.
Rangers :-
Mark Brown, Maurice Ross, James Watt, Bob F.T.P.Malcolm, Michael Stone (surely not!), Peter MacDonald, Chris Jardine, Francis Heggarty, Darren Fitzgerald (is this the Rangers team?!)David Graham, and Barry "Glesga Kiss" Robson.
-
Gordon thanx for posting that, it makes for interesting reading. Very much a case of where are they now?
John Paul McBride was supposed to be the next Paul McStay. Not quite.
-
Just the one player from that final currently in the Celtic first-team squad.
-
Malone86 :- From tonights squad I can only get the birthplace of thirteen of them of those 11 are Scottish born including S. Lennon born in Irvine, the two born elsewhere are J. Sagar from Oldham and Furman from S. Africa
Gordon :- It's strange how so many youngsters whom I would assume are the best in the country fail to make the grade. Fom tonights team I expect good things from Lennon, Furman and Fleck. (I don't know enough about the Celtic team to comment) From your list I think Darren Fitzgerald has probably got the most unlikely name for a Rangers player since Alex O'Hara :-)
-
hi paul, fellow celts. what has happened to our kids, by all accounts they took one helleva beating. i asked on here a few months ago if murray park was finally starting to produce, as i was a little alarmed while watching scotlands schoolboys,as they had 9 yes 9 players in the pool to our 2 and if i am correct one of those defected from them or that would have been 10.these things bother me as i hate them beating us at anything ,but it certainly sounds like things are getting back to what i remember many years ago when rangers always had big rough, physically stronger guys than us playing for them. i hope to god this is just a blip and that we will get back to producing faster, stronger, fitter , and more talented boys again
-
paul ,
tried info on blogger, re registered ,working ok now as you will see .sorry for bothering you ,
jimtim
-
Ed i expected something from Fleck tonight. He is the one getting all the publicity, the next big thing, but he was the poorest rangers player on show.
One thing he does have going for him though is that he doesn't look like his uncle.
Young Lennon (isn't it ironic don't you think) looks like he has a chance if tonight is anything to go on.
-
Edward..Certainly Lennon and Furman looked the part.
None of the young Celts did themselves justice this evening and I hope that there are a few in our ranks too that may have a chance.
However as you say very few make it.
jimtim..it was like being transported back in time.
There were a few Shearers, Davis's and Greig's in their line up.
We looked lightweight. Shades of Alex Byrne, Bobby Carroll and Bobby Jeffrey's.
Thanks Ardoch.
Good Night All.
-
Ardoch :- I wasn't at the game tonight so can't comment on the performances, Fleck normally puts in a good shift and although memory isn't always the best judge I would say he is far better than his uncle was at the same stage. S. Lennon as you say does look a very good bet for the future and I'm happy to put up with the irony if he turns out to be half as influential as your own Mr Lennon. As Gordon showed though the big problem comes when they try to take the step up.
-
Its been a good week for the tick (tonights result being an exception which will no doubt be given a major profile in tomorrows rags).
I've been thinking about this notion that the Celtic fans don't like GS etc. I took a straw poll of many supporters that I know (note Paul I say supporters - where IS MY DEBATE?)
Most were of the opinion that he has been an excellent manager but the only thing holding back is the fact that the team is just scraping by. However 99% of my "unscientific" sample were full of praise.
This made me think further - where does this notion that the support don't like GS come from? Is it the fact that his name doesn't get sung - well sure you doesn't have a song like MON had - but I've heard his name sung many times.
It is therefore my contention that many have taken this view from our "friends" in the media - some of whom are the very same folk that tell us not to listen to the media.
Anyway - way off topic probably - but as you all know I like to bore people with my theories.
-
neg anon
i know its not like me to disagree with you but,
i dont think its a media invention. if you look at every celtic website/forum/blog there are some and often many anti-strachan voices on there and have been since he took charge.
-
E D B,
Did you get your mail this morning.
Cheers,
Martin.
-
Yes Ed we see players who look the part as kids all the time, at club and international level, but fall from grace pretty quickly.
It has been happening for decades and you have to wonder why. Where are we going wrong in this country? It doesn't seem to happen to the same degree in other countries.
-
Martin
Afraid not.
-
Watchow,
It depends what you mean by anti-strachan.
If you mean that there is a lot of debate about GS and a lot of disagreement about the team etc then yes - there is indeed. However I view this as a very healthy phenomenum (damn my spelling).
if you mean that there is a clear hatred of GS - then where is it? I'm sorry I fail to see it.
And if you think that this is just a GS thing - look back at the "Black Sunday" season and witness the debates which took place about MON during that time.
You will find little difference.
You've got to appreciate the media agenda here - Paul will say it sells papers - but the media's anti-Celtic bias runs much deeper. In times when things are going good for Celtic they will manufacture problems. Every time we win the league we get the tired speculation about the manager leaving. During the season when we are clearly ahead they will look at anything which is not perfect and they will make the provariable mountain out of the molehill.
When I am at the games - as others have stated - there is a lot of vitriol aimed at just about anyone - it has ever been thus - I've been going to games for around 30 years now and it has NEVER been any different.
Nope - unusually my friend we will have to agree to disagree!!
-
Martin - are you awaiting an e-mail from me?
-
Neg Anon
I certainly concur.
-
Neg Anon
I agree with you. The media have definitely exagerated the supports "ill" opinion of Gordon. As a result I think alot of Celtic supporters have subsequently thought that he isn't well liked and thus it's far far easier and popular to criticise.
I know of many Celtic fans that don't attend games or log on to Celtic sites such as this and so aren't truly in touch with the feelings of other fans but get their information from the media. The same media who are portraying Gordon to be unpopular. Therefore this view becomes more and more common where upon I even have fans of Rangers, St. Mirren, Greenock and Motherwell ask me why no Celtic fans actually like Gordon when he has been so successful. Their words not mine.
I tell them that he is in fact popular and well thought of by the majority and it is only a vocal minority along with the media that are portraying Gordon as being disliked or hated even.
On tonight's Youth Cup game, I was really dissapointed in the result and performance but for me only one team actually tried to play football and it wasn't them. The Rangers players were 100% commited with their midfield more often than not being completely bypassed in favour of thee old blooter up the park.
After the first two early goals it was over. Our back line and goalkeepers confidence looked shattered. Ahh well let them enjoy it. It is after all their first trophy in two years. Aww Bless........

The timing of your poll gives a false reading. Its all wine and roses at the moment.
Football fans are a fickle bunch.
Perhaps had you conducted the poll after the Flakirk game you might have got a different result

EDB/Artic Monkey - I've seen this sort of thing before - where the media plants a seed based on some misinterpreted evidence. Another great example I can think of was the Boavista game at CP - where we all booed Neil Lennon.
Of course those of us at the game can testify that the support where indeed getting frustrated (my interpretation being that we were just so desparate to get to a final) - the booing was at the style of play - not Neil Lennon in particular.
Artic - I hadn't even thought of the self fulfilling prophesy that this all creates - but I do think this does indeed help fuel the flames.
-
Smelltheglove
I agree (it is indeed unscientific) - however I think truer judgements come at the conclusion of league campaigns. Fans can get a better perspective on things then.
-
neg anon
i'm not saying there is a clear hatred of him, just that there have always been people opposed to him and their number had grown, before the media made a story out of it.
i think there is a big difference between the criticism aimed at mon during his last season. i dont remember people being as critical of mon as they are of wgs at any time during his time in charge.
very little singing of wgs's name until the middle of this season and it stopped as quickly as it started.
i dont think its manufactured by them, i just think theres a lot of people who just dont like him as celtic manager. i think you sell the celtic support a bit short if you think they can have their minds made up by the gutterpress on something as important a the manager
-
ps i look forward to the day that we can agree on something. anything at all.

Absolutely shocking! Sack the board! Strachan must go!
If this is indicative of the future of Celtic and Rangers then pass the cyanide tablets!

And to add insult to injury on the day that Neil Lennon announced the end of his Celtic career, a guy called Lennon bagged a hat-trick for Rangers.
;o(
Let's hope this makes Rangers over-confident against Hibs next Friday, and it makes the Celtic youth team work even harder to get the 6 or 7 goal win that they will doubtless need against Falkirk in order to retain their league crown...

for anyone who is interested i told by pal that soccer am will be first to show the new home stripe on saturday, not read all the posts sorry if its already been said

Don't think the coach (John McLaughlan) can escape blame for tonight's debacle.
Rangers looked fitter, stronger and more organised, and looked ready from the first whistle.
It took Celtic about 25 minutes to try anything other than a long ball to Sheridan.
Sad, and embarrassing.

A Wee Word or Two
Paul67
Tip of the hat to you again. A highly appropriate thread which you should be congratulated for (suprised Kano did not beat you to it). I would like to add to your comments. And these words follow on from my unfortunately minimalist congrats to John Kennedy during my last post....
CQN word of the week.... PARAGON
John Kennedy.... The Paragon of....Character.
Well done John. You deserve it. And with the character (and talent) you have shown it appears to me that you have shown enough metal to be a part of the Gaffers plans. Keep The Faith Son.
The article in The Herald shows that not all journalism is lazy (just some of it)....
Neil Lennon....The Paragon of...Leadership....Well Done Neil. The transition from MON top GS was a challenge for you more than most. And it was a challenge for all. You helped make it happen more than most. It came on top of the challenges that you had to face in that enlightened democracy that is Scotland and its media minnions. I will not forget you.
Shansuke Nakamura..... The Paragon of..... Professionalism.... You sir are an example for all to follow. Yes, you are not of the occidental world. But there is something about you that is reminiscent of a certain Mr. Henrik Larsson. Talented? Absolutely. But the Paragon of a professional. Like him. Sublime talent requires the addition of discipline, work and modesty. Thats what make sit even more sublime. Well done sir. Please stay.
Gordon Strachan...The Paragon of a Winner. Your professional record says it all. It cannot be argued with. From the begining I considered you a student and a teacher with very high expectations for yourself and your students. Congratulations on what you have achieved so far. I have no doubt the best is yet to come. I hope it is in Paradise.

Edward in all seriousness...
I looked at a headline in the times (that i did not read)..Which alluded to the Gaffer and your interim boss reffering to youth...I have thought for a while that the financial contraints on Scottish football will be to the benefit of Scotland in the long term... I look forward to youngsters in Scotland believing in a dream being posible...We must nurture and export our talent...For the good of everybody... I truly believe GS recognizes and believes in this philosophy as being one that brings the greatest happiness to most so to say...I think he will find an all too willing allie in your interim leader...

Pablophanque :- How about something bluesy?
PJBhoynyc :- I tend to agree, rearing your own players makes sense both from a financial and a loyalty side. The big problem as Gordon pointed out earlier is the huge drop out rate from the highest valued of the youth team to the seniors. The attrition rate is horrendous. Anyone who can fix that problem will deserve manager of the decade.

Edward... I truly believe that most if not all contributors to this blog will have witnessed the collapse of promise from young players wiith serious potential. I think most of the time due to circumstances outwith football and usually relating to a lack of leadership in their personal life. I have used this pun in the past but I truly believe Faither Ghordon is aware of this defecit. Hence his contempt for fools in the media. They are culpable in the nonesense of Scottish culture. A quagmire at times indeed.
pablo...Any choons gratefully received from a conneiseur such as yourself.
Somebody told me you liked This One
I was away seeing Jarvis Cocker on Monday night. Fantastic. Unfortunately he did not repeat what he said about Walter Smith when a rangers supporting friend was in the back of his taxi ....(Although he had a grudging appreciation of his young apprentice....ed)

According to the report in the herald, Rangers withdrew 2 players from the Scotland youth squad for the game last night.
Club before country again??
-
Gordon @23.06
I have been thinking to myself that Smith was doing a back to basics with them. It seems it stretches to the Youth as well. You mention, besides Alex Byrne and Bobby Carroll, whom I remember, Bobby Jefferies, whom I don't. Did he ever get a run in the big team?
Here's hoping we produce lhads who play football. We can do without the Shearers and Caldows and Greigs. Therein lies shame and infamy (and total lack of dignity?). Theirs will never be the Celtic way.
-
WG - good man, great start to the day with that memory.
I was there that fine day. Not even on the pitch never mind the crossbar but delighted to be present on such a momentous day.
9 IN A ROW - and with 44 players.
-
Proof that the Herald has indeed returned to it's roots (ignore the fact that I plagiarised the joke from CQN in the first place).
Here's what I sent in:
"Hot on the heels of the GMTV phone scam it is believed that Rangers will be lodging a complaint against the SPL for being allowed to enter a competition that they had no chance of winning.
vclxi
Cumbernauld "
Here's what was published:
"Can't win 'em all
vclxi in Cumbernauld overhears a chap angrily denouncing television company GMTV for its phone scam of folk entering competitions which they had no chance of winning.
"I don't know," said the chap's pal, trying to calm him down, "I'm a Motherwell fan and I've never complained about the SPL letting us enter a competition every year we're never going to win.""
Now I could understand them changing it to make it scan better or to make it sound funnier, they have done in the past to some of my entries however these changes do neither.
First Speirs disappears then Broadfoot takes his sycophancy up a level and now the Diary is being censored so as not to show them in a bad light.
Mr Murray does indeed seem to have these people in his pocket.
That's the last diary entry they are going to get from me.
-
In Sean South's earlier post he mentions various impressive attendance statistics from English youth matches, all of which far outdo the c.11,500 who attended the (first hour of the) Scottish Youth Cup Final last night.
For the record, last night also saw the second leg of the FA Youth Cup Final between Liverpool and Man Utd.
Having lost 1-2 in the first leg at Anfield last week, in front of a crowd of 19,518... Liverpool won 1-0 in the return at Old Trafford last night, in front of 24,347 spectators.
With away goals not being considered in this tournament, the tie went to penalties, with Liverpool emerging victorious for the second successive season.
It will also be interesting to see what the attendance is at the Arsenal Ladies' UEFA Cup Final 2nd leg on Sunday against Swedish Champions Umea. At the start of this week Arsenal had sold over 2,000 tickets already, but most spectators usually just turn up on the day.
Scotland's own Julie Fleeting will be looking to add to her impressive tally of 9 goals in 8 UEFA Cup games this season, as she attempts to help Arsenal become the first British team to win the Ladies UEFA Cup.
Arsenal Ladies lead 1-0 from the first leg in Sweden.
-
Or try this for Sean South's post. Second time lucky?!
-
WinningGemmel :- I suppose you could call the trophy you will lose next season luggage lol. Watching Celtic lift the trophy on Sunday sounds a lot more like hell than paradise for me so I think I'll give it a miss. I look forward to swapping handshakes but as far as the 5 point hug goes? Not on the first date I'm not that type of guy :-)
Gordon J :- To my mind they were right to do so, the club pays the wages through money the get from folk like me, I pay my money to see them in light blue not dark blue, club before country anytime.

Maybe not this year as he`s settling back in to the footballing life with the first team at Celtic Park, but definitely some time in the next couple of years.
As for who may be appointed captain this year, whoever is given this honour,he must lead by example & remember who & what he is representing.
