Again our midfield is posted missing we have no bite in the middle, Naka poor, Hartley lost, Lennon the master of the 3 yard wall pass

We sit much too deep allow any opposition to come onto us

McGeady and Riordan have been excellent so far!!

    HT Celtic 1-1 St Johnstone

Not a bad game - we started very well but then took the foot off the gas and let them back into it. The space we were finding all over the park has been closed down and we are struggling to make decent forward passes. JVoH looks cumbersome up front but Riordan is very lively. For them Jason Scotland is their only forward and is a real handful. When the ball is knocked up to him, he always seems to find space off our defenders, even when surrounded by 3 or 4 Celtic players. Our defense need to push up and press the game more.

Boruc - looked comfortable - nothing much he could do about the goal.
Caldwell - Nothing to do defensively so need to push on more
Mick - Made a bad mistake early on trying to play offside
Pressley - Immobile and weak in the tackle
Naylor - Best of the defense
Lennon - Once again - we do not need both Hartley and Lennon in for this game. Playing well but...
Hartley - Bright start. Tried to get involved but has been ineffective for most of the half
Aiden - Looks our only threat from midfield.
    Naka - Disappointing today
    JVoH - See Naka.
Riordan - Good 1st half - looks our most likely goal threat

Our midfield needs an overhaul. It is going to take another goal from them before TG will be thrown on though.

I think (not that I know anything) Pressley and Hartley are our problems. I would rather have mick and darren in the centre. We are also missing big Evander.

Also I bet a lot of people are missing Telfer, Caldwell is not a crosser of the ball.

Is Perrier Doumbe no use? If so why is he on the wage bill. Has he been playing for the reserves?

That was another disappointing match but a win at least.

Boruc: unconvincing today for a change
Naylor: Solid and realiable, I hope he isn't injured
    Mick: made too many mistakes
Pressely: Solid enough, he needs to push the defensive line forward more
Caldwell: second to Jan for man of the match for me, he was solid throughout and made some nice passes
McGeady: very, very poor today. He should have came off for Miller
Lennon: I felt he did Ok today to be honest.
    Hartley: pretty average
    Naka: Slightly better than McGeady
Jan: Two goals, so he can be happy with his performance.
Riordan: did well but the change was necessary. I would have moved him to left wing though.

    subs
Gravesen: looked very good and added the creativity which was missing from McGeady, Naka, and Hartley
Miller: Helped relieve some pressure when he came on. He did alright

    LIAR !

I've tried to remain positive about the manager but no more. The team has been filled with ORDINARY players and our precious few great players are not performing.

That team is going to be bullied and battered by all-comers next season unless some serious steel is injected into the team.

If Gordon Strachan thinks you can win football matches by MOTD2 level tactics, watching re-runs of games, reading Sun Tzu or God knows what other notions that are in his head - then he is not fit to be the manager of Celtic.

Clinging on for dear life against a first division side? Disgraceful.

Thommy G always has a big impact when he comes on. He needs to start with Paul Hartley, and once its all wraped up give JJ a tunt with TG in the middile. I like PH, hes to busy tidying up Big Neil's mistakes, not good, not being alowed to make his runs. Im still at a lost as to why Deek came off, form what I could tell he was playing well. *Sigh* Another 2-1 win. We need to sort our midfield out. With Deek and JVOH up fornt wev got finishers, but the pace is gone with NL in the middle

    Great game.

Couldnae tell who was first division and who was Premier league, but great game anyway.

    Kojo,LassieBeattie,
Had no trouble with the C67 video broadcast.

    Came through very nice.

    Naylor for POTY.

Sean would agree with most of your assesment.

Except Naka was slightly worse than Aiden,he has been pretty poor for about 2 months now,at least Aiden had a few good runs early on,and McManus did save a certain goal.

Thought Gary Caldwell did okay, and thought Artur had a howler, probably his worst game for Celtic.

And Lee Naylor just pipped Big Jan for our best player.

Thought Thomas Gravesen was good when he came on too.

    Rest were okay,nothing special,but okay.

    Cheer up lads,we won again.

Through to the final was what we wanted, through to the final is what we got.

    And we scored 2 goals!!

    Fancy that.

Why play so deep against a 1st div side?

Why cant TG get a start?

    Why take DR off?

Its ok saying we MAY make better signings but Gordons midfield leaves a lot to be desired with NL....time for Neil to take a coaching job and then we will see what options GS comes up with.

  • At 14/04/07 14:48, Sean said…

I think it made sense bringing Miller on because we needed a bit more speed, movement, and stregnth up front at that point which Miller gave us but I felt it should have been McGeady that got the chop not Riordan. McGeady and Naka were probably the main problem with the team today as both were right off form and neither performing to the standard they can and should.

  • At 14/04/07 14:53, yoshimisgreenandwhiterobots said…

What we needed, was someone who cna score a goal to kill the gmae off, and someone who is less likely to give the ball away deep into injury time. Rioridin fits that bill. Miller dosnt. The decison was especialy confusing considering that Riordin had done well in his first start up front. Hell, Id have been hapier to have TG up fornt for DR, if he HAD to come off

I think the problem goes far deeper than players being off-form.

There seems to be no urgency and no imagination in Celtic's play right now. I lost count of the amount of headers St Johnstone won in our penalty box. They bullied us off the ball all game. our passing and ball-retention was poor.

If St. Johnstone had got an equaliser it would have been fully merited.

The saddest thing for me about today is that the pattern of play went just how I expected it to.

Ahhhh, there's nothing better than Hampden in the sun while watching Caldwell, Pressely, Hartley and Miller wearing the world famous green and white hoops.

Before the negative comments start I think we'd do well to remember that St Johnstone aren't any old first division team. They're in second place for goodness sake and challenging for the first division title.

Wasn't it great to see the team freed from the pressures of the SPL so that wee Gordon could really show us what his team was capable of.

I just loved how we grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and showed these first division also- rans how real champions play.

McGeady in particular was immense. The way in which he dominated his opponent was just sublime.

As for the centre of midfield, what can you say??

Pace, movement, precision passing. It was like watching Viera and Zidane in there.

However, it was slightly disappointing not to see Kenny Miller on from the start. The quality was there for all to see during his brief cameo role.

My only criticism of the manager was letting Graveson anywhere near the pitch. You could see the man has little to offer and I will be glad to see the back of him in the summer.

Speaking of which, hopefully we'll punt big Boruc as well for a good few bob. No point having that guy from ICT sitting on the bench twiddling his thumbs.

In fact, I long for the day when wee can say the entire first team is made up of former SPL players.

    Not long now!!

Yes folks, the generation of domination is shaping up nicely.

Just to whet our appetites, we already have Scott Macdonald signed up. And if Wee Gordon is half the manager I think he is, he'll have had a good look at a couple of those St Johstone boys today.

I mean, what's a few more shrunken Celtic shirts between friends??

Just back from the game only a few highlights worth mentioning.

    We won.
    It was sunny.
The guys near the back of G4 section with the bodhran and the singing- well done- they were my MOTM.

Now need to see if Clan Royal can win me some money.

I was glad to see that you didn't overly defend Mr Strachan's manner during his press interview yesterday.

His pre match interview today made my wife switch off the TV and phone me, moaning about how much she can't stand him.

I was in a clients house and caught the interview.
I don't care if he has an axe to gring with the reporter.
He is The manager of Glasgow Celtic Football club .

Most of the previous other Celtic managers will have had issues with certain reporters.

They just had to deal with it.

Mr Strachan repeatedly conducts himself in a childish ,petulant and obnoxious manner with the press.

I left that appointment and went onto another. The couple were from Sunderland and both were Sunderland fan's ,who like to see Celtic win.

We spoke about the match and without prompting both said that they felt that Mr Strachan's manner was out of order.

I have mentioned this several times on the site.

Someone in authority within Celtic should really have a word in his ear.
He does himself no favours at all.

When you compare his pre match interview with Owen Coyles, post match interview. Then i can only squirm with embarrassment.

On that point .I think that the managerial career of Owen Coyle could be worth watching.

When John Collins was appointed i said that he would fail because he is a bighead. The dressing room will turn against him.
This is already proving to be the case.

Mr Stracahan is quite unpopular because of his manner .I do not think that it would take a lot for the dressingroom to turn on him.

Despite watching a winning Celtic team ,many fan's are distraught at the standard of Celtic's play.

Not since Jock Brown and Terry Cassidy before him, have i wanted an individual to leave Celtic Park because of their demeanor.Amongst many thing's ,Mr Strachan must improve on his media relation's,and people skill's.

Just back from Hampden. There could be no excuses today- a beautiful day, a perfect pitch, and lower division opposition. A real chance, one would have thought, for us to stretch our legs and show our class (as David Coleman famously said).

Instead, we got a performance that had "copyright Celtic FC 2006-07" stamped all over it. Once again, our midfield was bereft of creativity and pace. Meaning that once again our strikers were starved of decent service and our defence was put under undue pressure.

StJohnstone could have won this one with a bit of befief and some more composed forward play. As it is we have Jan to thank for our cup final berth. He didn't do much, but his two goals are what he is there for. Aside from him, only Naylor and McGeady got pass marks.

The decision to sub Deeks was roundly booed, which was a shame for Miller who probably didn't need to hear that as he trudged on. The bigger mistake (IMHO) was once again the absence of Tommy G from the start.

Not pretty and not clever from Celtic, but we're there.

    Time for an ice-cool Duff...

    Absolutely disgusted.......

Celtic can't win for losing with some of the negative nonsense...

    Celtic lose...sack the manager

    Celtic win....sack the manager

    Fair weather supporters...canny stand'em.

The Bhoys won, deek started, Gravy got a shot (did well) WE scored all 3 goals, St Johnstone were up for a game and could've punished us terribly - but didn't.

all else is p*ss & wind

We'll win the league next week and move on.

    SFTB,

Just not too proud of how our team is playing at present or how our captain and manager are behaving.
Dare I say it, they're demeaning the brand.

How frustrating are we becoming as a team to watch?

We simply don't look like we can move up a gear any more, certainly not with the current team set up. And yes we have injuries \ had injuries but who is on the sidelines you'd say would walk straight back into team? I can't think of any? Maybe Bobo?

I really hope our manager makes the connection that playing the same dreary team week in week out is not gonna suddenly make us any better or harder to play against. Something has to change and I believe dropping Lenny is the hardest decision facing Mr Strachan. Neil looks tired, one paced and today I thought lacked any movement to assist his team mates....but this is not a lets get Lenny post!!

I really thought today all our midfielders were poor which seems the common case every week now. These players have proved as indivuals they can provide so much more so is it simply down to tactics deployed?

Our manager wasn't slow in telling us a unit of the team had a problem and he'd fix it (was it last season I heard this a fair few times from him?)........well surely he must harbour private doubts that the current 4 midfielders he plays week in week out are not gonna run football matches....

I want to enjoy watching football again and winning with some style. I want to win trophies surely we as a team at Celtic can fulfill both of my wishes??

I don't want to go shouting for a new manager but it's so damn frustrating these days? What to do??

I love the club and agree 100% we should all get behind the team positively but it's not easy to keep papering over cracks anymore.

I'll be glad to put this season behind us and hope, really hope that we do make progress in the summer tranfer window, be that under Gordon Strachan or someone else....cos Gord knows we need some quality and steel added to this squad.

Good players don't become bad players overnight.....and we do have some GOOD players but where the hell are they??

    Hail Hail.......

I have to say I usually scroll past most of you miserable sods and content myself with lurkery these days but tinytim you merit reply on the basis of the stupid nature of your comments alone.

So your wife can't stand Gordon Strachan? That's it - he's got to go then, eh! Good grief!

And it seems Gordon doesn't show enough respect to journalists for you either. How much do you think big Jock showed them? And Martin could be pretty cutting too, but I guess you'd have forgiven them if you're wife had approved.

Then finally you predict the dressing room will turn against our manager. Add you call yourself a Celtic supporter? Disgraceful.

Paul67 - your magnificent blog has been hijacked by creatures I don't recognise as Celtic supporters and it's a shame.

    Hail, hail

Well I just put it through the W3c validator at http://validator.w3.org/
and it can up with 2 errors and not 15 and the two errors were regarding the use of '&' in and link (common mistake - they really should use '&') No real big deal as far as I can see

Run it against the home page.
I am now seeing 118 errors.

I believe the design was outsourced to Solution Canvas a web design company.
I like the design. It's easier to navigate than before.
Picking up these validation errors is akin to us quibbling about the glass used to drink a Glenfiddich.

damn my '& amp ;' without the spaces showed up as '&'.

Gavil you are right , I put a couple more pages through and lots of errors. They have headed the doctype as XML yet is written mainly as html4

most errors are warnings such as not closing < br > breaks (you dont need to in html but do in XML. Somebody needs to do a wee tidy up I assume the template they use is compliant but the content management system is an html one and doesnt convert their pasted editorials to XML. Poor show !

GG, your comment gets to the crux of my frustration - I couldn't give a toss about Rangers, Hearts or Hibs.

Too many supporters are happy to benchmark us against dross - as long as we're better than Rangers, everything's fine.

For me this is a recipe for underachievement and mediocrity.

The fact of the matter is that with our far, far superior resources, we should be doing a lot better than we are.

I know my view may appear churlish given last 16, 13 points clear etc. etc, but a huge opportunity for a geniune G.O.D. will be missed under the current management team.

I have been called worse thing's,i suppose ,but c'mon ,surely we can have have different opinion's without the insult's.

I was not advocating that Mr Strachan be sacked because my wife was annoyed by him.

I was using her as an example of someone who has, no axe to grind with Mr Strachan .She is impartial towards him,yet she was embarrassed by his conduct. The Sunderland fan's were the same.

He is not creating a good impression of himself.

As for my prediction that the dressingroom will turn against him.

I did not predict that,i said that this was a possibility if he continues with his current behaviour.

I will not betray a trust, but i know that some in the dressingroom ,have been very unhappy with his temper tantrum's and his management style.

I did not want to post that ,however it is a fact,as told to me in person, direct from the horses mouth.

    P.S.

If i get any more of your cheek ,i'll get my wife onto you.
