Stand up for the Champions

It is a lot better winning the league in the closing minutes of a game than losing it. Celtic played well in the first half against Kilmarnock. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink scored with a commanding header from a Nakamura corner on 24 minutes, which was worthy reward for the champions for their play in the opening period.

Kilmarnock, though, were always dangerous, and scored early in the second half, when Nish converted a Wales cut back.

Though Celtic had overwhelming possession for the remainder of the game, their recent problem of putting the ball in the net looked like delaying their coronation for another week until the last 20 seconds of added time.

Kilmarnock conceded a free kick 25 yards out on the Celtic right; Nakamura territory. Defending the free kick, Kilmarnock ‘keeper, Combe, was distracted by the forward runs of Vennegoor of Hesselink and Caldwell, not unlike Magnus Hedman was on that famour occasion in Munich. This meant he could not react to Nakamura’s free kick until it had passed the onrushing players on its way into the corner of the net.

Congratulations to Celtic, champions for the 41st time. Add the name Nakamura to Lennox, Johnstone (J), McLeod, McCluskey, Burns, Walker, Larsson, Johnstone (T) and Hartson.

    BeijingCelt from the previous thread...

I know exactly what you mean. Used to live outside Scotland myself. No matter how acclimatised you become to your adopted environment, days like this remind you of the strength of your links between Scotland, Glasgow, and Celtic.

Remember though we are an immigrant club. Most of us are immigrants either in recent family history or, like yourself, in our present day lives. The dislocation you feel right now is a thread that runs through our club from Walfrid to the present day.

It's in our DNA- unique among the world's football clubs.

But remember too that as a Celtic fan, wherever you are in the world, you'll never walk alone.

Just CHAMPION! A shame we couldn't have clinched it wearing the Hoops though.

Let's really rub it in against Hearts next week at CP. And roll on May 26th at Hampden Park.

'Mon the Youth team now, let's make it a TREBLE (and your own double in the process)...

Brian Quinn: "Other teams have a right to make this difficult for us. Gordon has done a fantastic job. He came in at a difficult time, but he's been a great manager.

"We are going to sit down with Gordon and talk about his needs. We'll do all we can to meet his needs within the parameters we have set.

"Nakamura is a genius. He can make people glad they paid their money to come and see the match.

"We will ask ourselves what we can do not just to repeat what we've done so far, but what we can do to go further. We have a world-class goalkeeper, Nakamura is achieving the highest possible standards, Venegoor of Hesselink has done very well since he came to us. We will look to bring in more players like them."

JJ: "Congratulations to Celtic. They've won the league with four games to go and you can't deny them it. But Kilmarnock played very well today. We had the better chances.

"We had some outstanding performances. We were more than a match for Celtic, but we were done by a cruel blow in injury. I could see why the referee gave the free-kick, but he was playing for a free-kick. He's been clever [to win the free-kick] and then he's been even more clever. He's done it to us before.

"We told the players that if Celtic did win it here, we wanted to make sure they had to earn it."

Let's hear it for the Bhoys!

The SPL title challenge began with a 4-1 victory at home to Kilmarnock on 29th July, leaving Celtic in 1st position at the top of the league... and ended with a 2-1 victory away to Kilmarnock on the 22nd April. How tidy!

We now have a 4 match rehearsal for next season and/or the Scottish Cup Final. Stand up (and be counted) Riordan, Gravesen, Jarosik, Sheridan, Kennedy, Perrier-Duombe & Bjarnason.

    The week ahead:

On Monday the 6-in-a-row Scottish Reserve Champions take on Rangers at home in a meaningless (to Celtic at least) league game.

Then on Thursday night the Youths take on Rangers in the Scottish Youth Cup Final at Hampden, before their crucial final Youth League match at home to Falkirk, where they have a 3 goal deficit on GD (they are level on points) to make up over Rangers if they are to clinch their 5th consecutive Youth Championship.

Says to me 'what you up to after the game' Every time my phone rings and it's her number i'm on eggshells and I see those big blobbly stars. Now 10 mins away from the end of this match she phones and asks what you up to?? Well I'm not having a celebratory pint ( in case I need to drive anywhere immenently!) but this championship tastes all the sweeter.

    Hey fellow Troops in Hoops!!

Is THIS the most significant league title win since we Stopped the Ten? And if you subtract THAT from the equation, will this prove to be our most important title win since Big Jock started our own nine?

Look back to the start of the season; it seems a long way off. Despite a superb points total, and a rock solid lead at the end of WGS's first season in charge, there were very few commentators gave us a PRAYER of keeping going.

Le Guen was going to whip us.

Many of us said at the time, if we beat THIS GUY we're out of the woods, home and free.

Does anyone believe New Rangers are any better than what they were at the start of the season? Has Smith plugged the leaks, or is he merely papering over the cracks?

Does anyone believe the threat RIGHT NOW is BIGGER than the one we were allegedly facing this time last year?

Paul has posted at length on the financial positions; yesterday on Clyde we were treated to a number of callers (Tims at the wind-up, most of them) phoning to ask where the money was coming from for our friends across town to mount their serious assault.

The standard platitudes were all that were reamed out; Murray will NEVER ALLOW Celtic to go further ahead; heard it last year. Murray will GO INTO HIS OWN POCKET FOR PLAYERS IF NEED BE. Heard THAT last year as well, when he had a manager with big ideas about who to spend it on. Rangers will SIGN SOME QUALITY BOSMANS.

Excuse ME??? WHO?? Do they know about players out there the rest of us DON'T?? Where's the real quality this summer, save for Sidwell?

This is the most important title win in a long, long time, because it could have gone the other way, very easily. Speaking personally, I was glad to see LeGuen go.

Strachan is now in a curious and enviable position. He could see off his THIRD manager in three years if we start next season well, and Rangers stutter - and I think they might. I see no genuine signs of improvement there at all.

We have deficiencies. No-one disputes or doubts it. But with money they are fixable. I'd rather we weren't spending any of it on Scott McDonald, but there you are.

Strachan has done well. The football has not been pretty, unless you mean pretty awful at times, but we are an effective unit, with some quality. Nakamura is incredible. Big Jan looks like a thirty-goal man next year and the kids all look great.

Hopefully too we hang onto Boruc, and there Brian Quinn's statements fill me with joy.

Our friends in the media (indeed, some of our own fans) will say this has been a mediocre year for Scottish football. There's one team I can think of anyway who's season has been mediocre - and it ain't us! Maybe the football has not always been sparkling, but we ARE the Champions, and LeGuen IS gone, and no-one thought THAT would have happened so soon!!

Two down, Gordon. If Mr Smith Goes To Hamilton this time next year, that will be three for three and very satisfactory indeed.

    Hail Hail!!!

    James Forrest,

I DO think that Wattie has improved Them. Certainly from the start of next season I don't think we can count on them dropping cheap points to anyone and everyone like they did at the start of this season.

However, the longterm prognosis for the Govanites is not good. If we spend wisely this summer, we can be reasonably confident of making it 6 out of 8 next year...

Naka has given so much pleasure this year. When the free kick was awarded, I turned to the young fellow sitting next to me and I shouted "Burst the net, Naka!". The young fella, being an equally avid Celtic fan, shouted back, "Naw he's gonna hit it into the *&^%$ing wall."

Aye, there's always a mineshafter when ye need wan:-)

2 seconds later we were kissing and hugging in ways which would get us done under Section 28.

The family reunites with a win. I don't want us picking fights with the pessimists today or gloating and point scoring. This is celebration time. We've just been paid and we're on the ran dan. Well I will be after a bite of supper.

Have to confess the celebrations are not quite over for me just yet. But having a nearby computer, thought I'd pop in for a quick Hail Hail...

What a surprise! Killie choose the title decider against Celtic to turn in their best performance of the freakin season! The casual observer could almost be forgiven for thinking they didn't like us.

Fortunately, we turned up as well...

And John Kennedy back into the breach! - and looking well composed in his first game back.

And then right at the end of a nailbiter, a classic last-minute free-kick winner from the Scottish Player of the Year.

What could possibly have made it better?

Well there would always be the scenario where we had a postmatch interview with Jim Jeffries, over the tannoy, conducted by me.

"C'mon now Jim, gies a wee smile on that fat girnin' bluenosed coupon of yours? Surely it's no as bad as all that?"

What's that Jim? Yer not happy with the result?

Well that's really taken the shine off the occasion for me, ya great balloonoid potato-heided misshapen megiddo-apologist freak!!!!

"So, in the immortal words of JRR Tolkien - Rune yeez!"

    One Gordon Strachan!

    Just Champion !

Thankyou Gordon and all the Bhoys !

Now lets show the Scottish MEDIA, with the loudest vote of confidence for WGS next Sunday and to the end of the Season.

Two in a row, couple of cups and last 16 CL and a baw hair away from the quarter final of CL.

Despite our we blimp during last couple of weeks, lets remind all the doubters in the MEDIA how far ahead we are.

We have dominated in the last two years and in reality the last seven.

A couple of quality signings in the same bracket as JVOH, Nakamura and Boruric and we should also do well next season !

    Party time !!!

    Hail Hail

One more time a big thankyou to Gordon Strachan and the all the BHOYS !!!

I'm a little bit emotional just now because I have just seen friends off to the airport and I am on my own again. It's my own fault, I put Leaving On A Jet Plane on for them for a laff, and when I came back it was still playing.

Anyway, something else special happened today. Celtic have won 41 league titles, it seems. (I say seems, because actually I think every one of ours is worth at least 1.5 of theirs.)

As of today, I have witnessed more than half of them, 21 in all. I can't count 1954, because I was there but not aware then.

And this one means as much as any. I know that's a cliche, but then why are so many bent on devaluing what Gordon Strachan and his players have achieved?

Let no one be mistaken. We are the champions. Deservedly. Again. I take so much satisfaction from that. I know we can get better. I take a lot of satisfaction from that too.

Today is a good day. Now for the cup. And if we win that, I will have witnessed exactly half of our Scottish Cup wins. Lucky, me?

We live in historic times. Everyone does, always. Let's make sure it's remembered in the right way.

    STAND UP FOR THE.....CELTIC. ALWAYS.

Well hope evryone on here is feeling CHAMPION.

I watched OUR team win the league today with my mates in our club and it makes a tremendous feeling sharing it with people who mean so much to you. I never missed being at the game until we had actually won the game. Then I was so jealous of all the lucky Bhoys and Ghirls who were there.

Today's game summed up our season in that we won,the opposition played their best game of the season (if they played like that every week they would be challenging for 2nd) we had a blatant penalty turned down the opposition went up the park and scored. We pushed forward and won our 17th game of the season bu 1 goal...ok 1 brilliant goal...

Stand up for the champions satnd up for the player of the year , stand up for the manager of the year , stand up for John Kennedy, stand up for the happiest bhoy in Rugby park Lee Naylor.... ach just stand up and toast OUR great club.

Im so happy for Gordon and US

Best image of the day for me was John Kennedy jumping on JVOH after the first goal.

I didn't think I would see JK again in a Celtic jersey.

At the end of the game he was even paler than usual, the young man was drained.

Will we ever get one of these hand to ball penalties given?

Chico thought Killie should have had a penalty for a challenge by Elvis in the second half.

the frustrating thing about it is the amount of penalties like those that we have lost over the last few years make it seem like one rule for one and team and another for the rest.

Anyways less moaning. I'm absolutely thrilled and I thought that was possibly the game of the season just there. I wouldn't have been happy but I wouldn't have been overly upset if we had to wait another week because I thought Killie gave us as good a game as any have this season. But what made it all the sweeter is the fact we came out on top no matter how much of a challenge was thrown at us. I thought we were great.

TITLE: Sunday Mail 23 Jul 06

    MARK GUIDI
IT'S a tough call, with many twists and turns before the transfer window shuts on August 31, but I tip Rangers to end up with the strongest squad. Celtic have lost too many experienced players to cope with the Champions League and the domestic title defence.
Champions: Rangers. Runners-up: Celtic. Relegated: Falkirk.

    GORDON WADDELL
THERE'S scarcely a punter outside Parkhead who believes Celtic will make it two championship wins in a row. And after following them for five pre-season games I'm not sure I do either.
Paul Le Guen has enough quality to see him through. Just.
Champions: Rangers. Runners-up: Celtic. Relegated: Dunfermline.

    EUAN McLEAN
I'M tipping Paul Le Guen to be the latest Old Firm boss to win the title in his first season. The Frenchman can emulate Dick Advocaat, Martin O'Neill and Gordon Strachan who did it with a new squad. Celtic look ill-equipped for a campaign on two fronts.
Champions: Rangers. Runners- up: Hearts. Relegated: Dunfermline.

    GAVIN BERRY
IT will be a major surprise if the SPL isn't a shootout between the Old Firm. Celtic have lost a few experienced troops while a new manager always brings fresh impetus - the last FOUR Ibrox bosses have all won the title in their first full season.
Champions: Rangers. Runners-up: Celtic. Relegated: St Mirren.

    SCOTT McDERMOTT
IT'S shaping up to be one of the most fascinating, compelling SPL seasons EVER.
But Rangers midfield looks key to their hopes with the likes of Jeremy Clement, Barry Ferguson, Brahim Hemdani, Libor Sionko and Thomas Buffel. Celtic's isn't as dominant.
Champions: Rangers. Runners-up: Celtic. Relegated: Dundee United.

TITLE: The Scotsman 29 Jul 06

    Prediction panel
    STEPHEN HALLIDAY
    Champions: Hearts
With both Celtic and Rangers in transition, Hearts will never have a better opportunity - if Vladimir Romanov allows stability at the Tynecastle club.

    ALAN PATTULLO
    Champions: Rangers
Paul Le Guen's arrival has made some believe all the Ibrox side have to do is turn up to win the league, but his impact will be based on hard work and he won't take anything for granted.

    STUART BATHGATE
    Champions: Rangers
Le Guen's tactical acuity will help a moderate squad to excel.

Well done on your list. I was copying it on to my newspaper files when I foud this from th Scotland on Sunday it seemed to fit:

`Oddly, the only common ground between large elements of the Old Firm support these days is an unshakeable belief that David Murray is given an easy ride by the Scottish media. And it seems that the Rangers owner/chairman himself wouldn’t demur over such a suggestion. At Stramash, we have it on good authority that he recently told a former associate – wouldn’t like to say who, but it was a Frenchman with the initials PLG – that he has “80% of the Scottish press in [his] pocket”.
To whom could Mr Murray, nay Sir David, be referring?'

I've watched Celtic win the title Twenty two times in my long Celtic supporting life. And that was as hard as it gets,I was a bag of nerves from the kick-off until the final whistle,(you would think I'd get used to it)but its still hard on the nerves.
I had my camera out waiting on the magical moment but it did'nt want to come,My mate said to me about the bad luck I was bringing because of the camera so I decided to put it back in its case,This was about 6 mins to go,The rest is history I was sitting in the second row about 15ft to the right of the goals,I watched the flight of the ball it was perfect.
I'm now regretting being a superstitious person,It would have been a cracking picture.
