Uefa shake up the old football cartel

Uefa does not ‘do’ Eastern Europe. This rule could seem more obvious than the sometimes obscure ‘interfering with play’ rule.

Only five neutral-venue club and international matches have been played in Eastern Europe, three when Yugoslavia hosted the latter stages of the 1976 European Nations Cup, the 1973 European Cup final, also in Yugoslavia, and the 1999 Uefa Cup final in Moscow.

In awarding ‘Euro 2012’ to Poland and Ukraine, Uefa have broken now ground. New president, Michel Platini, during his election campaign bemoaned the grip wealthy countries’ have on the European game, promising to democratise football. His organisation could not have made a more marked demonstration of this policy.

The stadium, transport infrastructure and hotel accommodation in Ukraine (especially) and Poland are no where near the standard in Italy. Even the political situation in Ukraine is volatile, but the decision still went against the wealthy country.

Platini relied on support from mid-ranking countries like Poland and Ukraine to become elected. They, and others like Scotland, Holland and Belgium, have a lot to gain from the cartel at the top of the game in Europe being broken up. Delivering such a prize will, I hope, encourage him to move forward with his plans to shake up the hold wealthy leagues have on the Champions League.

Access to the Champions League, as well as income from it, are weighed heavily in favour of England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany, without any valid reason.

There is no football justification for awarding appearance money to participants in line with the value of their domestic TV rights. There is no football reason why clubs from previous European powers like Scotland, Poland, Sweden and Belgium, should be prejudiced in their attempts to live up to their past reputation.

Michel has made a very interesting start to his presidency.

Can you get Michael to fix celtic's ticket customer services now. That should really test him.

Cheers oldtim- I know others have been luckier than me this morning in getting tickets and I am pleased for them. I can cope with the concept of losing out in an open competition. I object to being put through tawdry hoops (no pun intended) in order to become a loser.

And more power to Platini's elbow!

It's about time more diverse nations were given a chance to take part in Europe.

4 teams from one nation entered into it's premier competition, while some countries are not represented at all is a scandal and a joke. Talk about a closed shop??? Makes a mockery of it being called the Champions League.

Platini = French = Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite.

interesting post but i'm not optimistic about changes to the cl.

the national federations wield very little power compared to the clubs. we've already seen the g14 flexing their muscles recently with their threats of breakaway leagues or alternaives to the cl.

the big boy among the runners was italy, a country with big problems. it wasnt hard to come up with good reasons why it shouldnt go there

good on platini and uefa for this decision, but i'm not holding my breath for the cl.

Some interesting comments this morning. The Herald has had its desired effect. It has got us talking. I think the gist of it is spot on. No manager has achieved so much while attracting so little appreciation. Some of the reasons given just don't have any credibility.... I don't like his interviews, some say!! It leaves one to suspect that there is another reason.

We have done the virtually impossible....replacing a successful manager with another successful manager.

This hasn't happened often in anyone's recent history.

Platini's ideas on the CL are great in theory, but the fact is the money is only so big cos all the top clubs from the "big" leagues are in it. thats how it attracts such sponsorship and TV Money. How can you shake it up without losing its financial value. we are happy to take it when we get to last 16 for example. i think removing the parachute to uefa cup would be good as it means the medium clubs in there stay in longer, increase revenue and become more competitive

From the James Richardson Italian football column on the Guardian website. Does this sound like any team we know?

Inter have now taken just two points from their last three games. Since their recent exit from Europe they've looked tired and deflated, and unable to rouse themselves for a title run-in that's been a cinch for some months now

As a Derry man, we will never forget the visit of Benfica, managed by Sven and stacked with Brazilians and 2 Swedes (Jonas Thern and Magnusson) to the Brandywell in the European cup. Scrap the champions league I say, get back to the big one, just ask the Lions!

    Just a thought..
The current Euro setup is not really different from the USA claiming that:

the World Series is the the World Championship of Baseball...but only of North America

the Stanley Cup is the World Hockey Championship of club Hockey... but only in North America...

Wouldn't want any of those provincial teams bothering the might of their protected setup.

Last week one of the hockey thugs (that can actually put two words together without resorting to crayon stick drawings) stated that the Stanley Cup was THE most important sporting trophy on the planet bar none - nothing came close.

If you tell people that their version is the best - people are gullable enough to accept it.....I'd like to see some Cuban baseball teams hit the US leagues

    World series my left foot...

Same with the EPL/SerieA/LaLiga/Bundesliga - they rule the rules - so have the power....Rock On Michel..

Disappointed in the Herald, used to be a reader when I lived in Scotland....now in the trash with the DailyHun/DailyRanker/News of the Screws.....inflammatory sales driven nonsense (if the tims won't buy the rag, say somethin to get the huns to buy it!)

Reinforces the idea that I'm kinda glad I don't live there any more.

Looking forward to the weekend unfolding...my seat in front of C67 is assured and I'll be cheering like a demented person for the huns to loose and the Bhoys to win comfortably.....Can I have some more Deeks & Gravvy...Please Gord

    Hail Hail

Agree with your comment about baseball champions being labelled "World Championsk, but you're wrong with lumping hocley into the same category. I've been in the Great White North a long time (where Hockey is THE game) and there's no such connotation like that. You also label hockey fans unfairly when using the word "thugs" and belittle their itelligence. I've never heard of hockey thugs. On the ice, no question there are some players who warrant that label. Suggest you focus you're attention on football's thugs and leave the hockey fans alone.
Are you by any chance talking about hockey thugs in the U.K?

Assuming we win the league at the weekend I take it the trophy will be kept until next week?

A couple of issues with this.

Last year we were scheduled to, and did, win it against Hearts at Celtic Park yet the SPL I believe withheld the trophy on what was a 'volatile fixture'. So it's OK this year?

Secondly, Hibs were scheduled to present the CIS cup to their fans after their derby with Hearts at Easter Road. Why was this allowed? Also, what a damp squib. They got beat and the Hearts fans refused to leave!! In the end most of the Hibs fans trudged out quietly, not seeing the trophy. Hopefully history will not repeat itself.

Maybe last year's tropy presentation was really delayed by Celtic to get another spin out of it at the next home game and elbows pointed quietly at the SFA. Anyone know the scoop?

    Good article Paul.
You hit the nail on the head with your comment
"Access to the Champions League, as well as income from it, are weighed heavily in favour of England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany, without any valid reason.

There is no football justification for awarding appearance money to participants in line with the value of their domestic TV rights"

I think Platini is looking real close to home, ie. the French Championnat, and come to the same conclusion.
They have 3 places in the CL, but year on year, their performances are average at best (exclude Monaco's blip....). This is in spite of a mega-tv deal with Canal Plus, only beaten by the EPL/SKY and the riches of CL qualification/participation given they have an advert "market" of 65M people.

Platini is probably thinking the pie divided up by the big 5 could be split a bit fairer and it may not be too long before the other 20 odd countries behind the big-5 come round to his way of thinking and start to do something about it.

The top 4 clubs in the big 5 leagues want as much of the cash available to them - maybe all of it if they could wangle it. Although CL cash is imprtant to them, I really think they wouldn't miss 20-25% of this cash if it was redistributed elsewhere, as they have large enough incomes from all their other streams.

How I'd love to see the G14 break away and form their own closed league. I don't think it would last long as the rest of European football reorganises and play more varied and exciting matches than the inevitable ManUtd/Chelsea or Bayern/Real that the CL regulary throws up. It might take 3-5 years, but would be good to see.

Also, what kudos would there be to winning the Ford Galaxy European Cup? The one with the big lugs is the only show in town !!!

Anyone think we are chasing Brellier from Hearts as a defensive midfielder? He is out of contract in the Summer.

Also Kojo and Ken from the last thread. Kojo, I still think the midfield is the main problem. Your 50% comment is down to playing the wrong striker, or someone who is not really a striker. WE have JVOH, Riordan, and Magic, when fit and motivated, should be more than good enough to score often enough if given a reasonable number of chances. But, as you say, these are only opinions. I celebrate the right to state them, as you do yourself.

Ken, I do not think there is any shape to the front half of the team. What I see is both Naka and McGeady moving into the centre more frequently. I do not know if this is by design or because they see the void there. Each time they do it, they trail defenders in with them, making the centre congested and difficult to penetrate.

If you look at the manager's development as a player. For Dundee he played more on the wing; for Aberdeen and MU he moved inside. I wonder if he wishes Naka and, perhaps, McGeady to develop in the same way?? It worked for him, so why not for two talent guys like them. Actually, the afore mentioned Johnny Giles progressed the same way--winger to inside.

WARNING--- controversial point arriving. I thought that Ross Wallace had the skills to develop into a fine midfielder, given time, and maybe he will!

Looking forward to the Killie game and I shall be in Dublin to see it. I'd love to see Celtic score early and then maybe we would see a different team. They are fast and furious in the first 10 minutes; usually create a few reasonable chances but don't take them. If they did, I suspect we would see a fluid team. I am also looking forward to seeing Naesmith's first touch.

    On Frank Lampard

I've never been a huge fan of Frank, to me there is something dislikable about him which is hard to pinpoint and to be honest it's probably completely irrational, but the level of hatred towards him from not a minority group of people is quite disturbing I think.

Recently a fan ran all the way across the pitch to try and punch him and a lot of people joked that 'shame he didn't catch him', it is a joke I have no doubt about that, but at the same time i can't forsee many people being too upset if he did get punched. While i'm sure most non-Celtic fans in Scotland don't condone violence (and in England as well) but at the same time I bet quite a few would have a chuckle if a fan hit our Lennon. I suspect the reason is less to do with being a good, aggressive footballer for why Lennon gets abused in my opinion, but I can't find the root of the anger against Lampard.

Yesterday the West Ham fans hurled abuse throughout at him. I'm sure a lot of this was down to him being an old West Ham player but even then why treat a player who spent many years trying his hardest for their team, who's transfer gave them quite a bit of money so much stick? it is not like he left to go to an average mid-table team, he went to a club that allowed him to play at the top level whic has given him global recognition to an extent that Ronaldinho would like him in his dream team.

The reasons that people give for hating him don't seem to add up either. For example, they say he comes across as arrogant. I don't know where this has come from, because in reality Lampard has always been a to pro in his behaviour on and off the park, He is never outspoken nor does he strut across the pitch with a swagger. When he was attacked he didn't punch back but tried to avoid the situation. West Ham fans threw a brick at the Chelsea team bus (probably the same people that have a problem with Lampards personality *ironic*) and he actually defended them by saying that football is a sport that brings out people's emotions good and bad.

He players for an awful team it has to be said, but at the same time surely there are more outspoken, arrogant, egotistical, and generally players who are more deserving of abuse than Lampard in that team.

It's the same with the England team as well, everyone wants him dropped. I understand their reasoning to an extent but it seems quite sycophantic at times. Everyone doesn't seem to rate him other than top managers in the world, the best players in the world who clearly don't know what they are talking about. He is a good player, the amount of goals he gets from midfield a difficult league is incredible. Petrov only got his second at the weekend yet Lampard is always getting over 15 goals something our strikers can't do in the SPL!

I'm sorry for spending so much time writing about a Chelsea player on a Celtic blogg as i'm sure most don't care, but it's just something that disturbs me a bit like i said and I was wondering what others thought. When I see the abuse Lennon takes all the time it makes he get a bit annoyed when it happens to other players to such a rediculous level especially when Lampard, if you actually listen to him comes across as a reasonable fellow.

It all goes over my head I must say.

Sign a top class striker in the summer as that is already part of the plan, cheerio Kenny and thanks for your efforts and start next season with JVOH, Riordan, Killen, Zuraski and AN Other as the strike force!

Agree with your comments, however I don't think Killen will be the answer.

The reason being we already have McDonald on the way, JVOH, Zurawski and WGS does not rate Deeks as a striker. I would definentely bin Miller asap and I think Beattie is too injury prone and not that great anyway.

Therefore don't think Mr Lawell will allow more than 4 first team strikers, so 4th striker will hopefully be a CL qualified applcant.

I have never been bronzed in my puff? Wouldn't dream of it, dear bhoy.

After entire summers in Spain, I would simply turn a slightly darker shade of lobster.

Eddie O'D once told me that the human body changes radically ever seven years and that after the age of 21 I was bound to take a tan.

The way things have gone though, I think it would take more than Our Lord's figurative seventy times seven for me to have any chance.

Fortunately, though, down here in Rafael Scheidt country, lots of people are of Germanic stock and look a wee bit like me, only with a tan. And an extra ten centimetres in height. And more handsome features. And better clothes. But apart from that, I'm blending in nicely. If I could find a way of seeing the game on Sunday I'd be fine.

Your mother in law might like it here.

By the way, the Germans have been here since the 1780s. All that nonsense Scheidt had to endure about being of escaped Nazi war criminal stock was, er, criminal.

Well now I would not have D A for free.

The man did not have the fight or the fibre or the guts or anything else when the going got tough.

He baled out in 4 (FOUR) months, he ran away scared.

Even A Mc L, did not run, he stayed the course.

D A. A MAN OF NO PRINCILPES AT ALL.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

    Hi Martin

You realise I was kidding, right? Advocaat was just the first ridiculous example that came to mind.

The point is, if we had to replace Gordon Strachan at the moment, it would be very hard to find anybody who could do the job - given today's circumstances - better.

    Celtic First,

I was hoping you were kidding,

Replacing Gordon Strachan would be a very difficult thing to do.

I would not want any of the Premiership bunch, they would require millions to spend and even then we still would not be any better.

As for Continentals, well P L G certainly opened a million eyes did he not?

I say lets just hang on to the one we have, I will just take winning the league every year and put up with it.

Hola CF - I'm a mac aficionado but sadly have yet to crack the live fitba conndrum.

A while ago I asked the same question on this august blog and someone recommended Flip4Mac - free download.

It seeems that (strictly non-tech lingo here) it converts movies to mac os. ANyway I've never managed to get it to work for me as it asks me to download quicktime 6.5 (which I already have) for it to work - anyway it might be worth trying flip4 mac and see how you get on.

    CanajunBhoy,

I've also been in the great frozen north for a while ('bout 20 years all tolled)- I personally detest hockey in every form (shouldn't surprise too many that my "local" team would be the Leafs....need I say more! ;-).
If you watch the game regularly, amidst the scrapping and concussions, occassionlly a hockey game will break out....For every Gretzky there are 100 Bertuzzi's.

Incidently the thug was a player.....

...They see themselves as the only sport in town......nothing else exists.........Insular beyond belief.

Protectionism, Elitism called it whatever - they are the only sport in town because they hold the rule books.....as with the old dogs in UEFA....which was my point!

Don't they know the there is only ONE Beautiful Game

CF - What's the score in Brazil anyway. Busioness or strictly pleasure.

A mate of mine went out there with the express intention of getting a girlfriend and in due course wife. His plan worked a treat - a total stunner. He like my good self was less than gorgeous and he then spent the next 5 years fighting (literally at times) off competitors and trying to convince strangers that he really had caught such a beauty. His life became a misery as despite their mutual love his confidence took a hammering. Well it all ended in tears, so a word or two of warning there for you.

Martin (ex of 42) - thanks for the invitation to the laddy's do - won't be there but have a fantastic celebration of all thing 42/67 (that's my number? Toots and the Maytals.

    Boardroom minutes demanded by court

    From the Evening Times

RANGERS could be forced to reveal details of boardroom discussions about a £48million club merchandise deal.
Court officials are to be urged to force the club to hand over written records of several confidential board meetings.
The move is to be made by the GMB union, which is currently in a compensation battle with the Glasgow club and sportswear chain JJB Sport.

The union, which is representing 31 sacked shop workers who claim they were unfairly dismissed, is taking the fight to an industrial tribunal.
Furious staff claim their jobs should have been switched to JJB Sport when Rangers agreed last summer to allow the Wigan-based retailer to exclusively design and sell club merchandise under licence.

The deal, which will trigger royalty payments to Rangers worth millions, led to the closure of 18 club shops in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Workers have already lodged legal papers with the Employment Tribunal Service and a full hearing is expected in the coming months.
The GMB has hired employment law specialist Margaret Gribbon of Digby Brown Solicitors in Glasgow.

Rangers are accused of unfair dismissal, failing to conduct detailed consultations with staff and failing to protect jobs by not transferring staff to JJB Sports.
The sportswear giant is also accused of breaching Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) legislation.

Today the GMB confirmed it plans a new legal move when senior official Ian King said: "We are to instruct our lawyers to seek a court order to try to obtain minutes of board meetings at Rangers months before the club made known its shops were to be shut down."
A club spokesman said: "We are not going to comment."

To the best of our knowledge here at Mon the Hoops, only one member of Rangers staff (Andy Cameron's son) was given employment after the closing of the shops. The other 220 employees are claiming compensation for loss of earnings.

Could be a pretty penny. Looks like David may have to dip into the "300 years of the Union" profits generated last month.

Yours in not shopping in JJB

It does not mean they are claiming to be world champions.

    Bhoys,

On Sunday 6th May Paul67 celebrates his 40th birthday.

I have organised a Celtic Quick News Birthday Meal to allow the good posters of this blog the chance to help him celebrate that very special day.

The Avonbridge Hotel, Hamilton, is the venue and the date is Friday 11th May.

The price will be around £30.00 per head and includes a full 4/5-course meal.

The time of the event will be 7.30pm for 8.00pm.

Unfortunately there will be a limit on the amount of places available.

Places will be reserved on a first come, first served basis and can be reserved by emailing me on

    martinbrennan42@hotmail.co.uk

If you wish to be there on the night, email me as soon as possible.

    Cheers,
