Boruc key for Celtic against Aberdeen

Who was it suggested I was delusional for asking for a comfortable win? Not that I am complaining, a win is a win these days, and despite my hope that St Mirren would be relegated for their p.a.-launched reckless attack on our supporters, I was relieved to hear that Dunfermline still have weaknesses ahead of the Cup Final.

Two goals from open play from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, the first a facsimile of his debut goal against Hibernian in August, when he knocked home a rebound and the second, a downright gallus back-heel. It has been a difficult first season in Scotland for the Dutch international, who missed much of the season through injury, but I am sure he will become a sensational player for Celtic.

The story of how we kept Aberdeen down to one goal is perhaps more important. Artur Boruc made four outstanding saves, one from the penalty spot. Aberdeen also hit the woodwork and had striker Lovell miss an open goal from four yards.

That is a lot of chances considering Celtic played well yesterday; too often Aberdeen cut through the middle of the Celtic defence – an indication that a tension still exists between committing forces to attack or defence.

The first goal rekindled memories of something Gordon Strachan said back in August about strikers running wide, creating space for midfielders to make supporting runs into. The goal was created by Kenny Miller, who used his pace and the space available to him to drag his marker out of position before squaring for Derek Riordan, who’s shot was parried for Vennegoor of Hesselink.

It sounded good in theory back then, still does, but we have seen too little of it in the intervening months for it to be a workable play.

The second goal was also reminiscent of a how we thought things were going to work out. Nakamura played the ball towards the Aberdeen goal line for Paul Hartley to make what used to be known as his trademark forward run.

I am inclined to think that Hartley has been under instruction to hold back, partnering Neil Lennon in a similar way Paul Lambert did instead of playing his more accustomed game, as surely the manager would have corrected any off-plan reticence to support the forward(s).

I enjoyed the end of the game. Around 30,000 stayed behind to see off Neil Lennon, who in future times we are bound to tell our children what he went through to play for Celtic, and they are bound to wonder what Scotland was like in the early 21st Century.

It is four years since Dunfermline surrendered at Ibrox, incurring the wrath of the elder Sutton brother who was vilified far more than the Fifers for losing six goals. How ironic therefore, that yesterday the younger Sutton brother scored two goals for St Mirren at Fir Park which relegated Dunfermline.

Pity Motherwell,Dunfermline and St Mirren couldn't all have gone down.

Gretna will fancy their chances in a head to head with St Mirren next season.

I think JVOH will be an even better player next season with a proper pre-season behind him.

Watched Shalrie Joseph for the second time last night. New England Revolution playing against LA Galaxy (Beckham's new team).
Joseph had a poor first half and at that point I was scratching my head why we would be interested in this fella.
Second half he was much better. He has a strange role at the Revs. Neither an attacking midfielder or a defensive one he doesnt shine in attack or defence. He has a roving role all over the midfield, back forward, left and right. I would describe him as a link player. Celtic would never play that style IMO so hard to watch this guy and see the fit.
What Shalrie has is an enormous mobility. He has a great engine, never stops running. He is as mobile as Neil is static. His touch is not bad and he wins some balls in the air as well.
My final conclusion was he would still make a decent squad player provided he was able to stick to the manager's orders and be disciplined in his role (Tommy are you listening?).
The TV commentator said that Celtic had offered $1 million for him that was rejected by the MLS. Thats old news but the amount is half of what we heard before.(we heard the same figure, but in pounds)
New England's manager Steve Nicol and his sidekick Paul Mariner were delighted their team won 3-2 in LA as the Galaxy are the darlings of the league.
LA have some green and yellow in their strips, so Becks will be making those colours even more popular in N.A.

I’m relieved as much as everyone that we managed not only to get a win, especially for our captain,
but to play football and provide us with a positive vibe that’s been missing since AC Milan.
Aberdeen were up for the game – it was a good result. I was just so glad to see some indication from
the game that there is a lot to look forwards to in the coming season. It’s going to be 3 in a row.

Jan feeding off DR, Deeks feeding off Jan, I wish we had seen more of that partnership this year. There's always next season....:)
'..downright gallus back-heel.' Long time since I've heard that word Paul, but it certainly was! Doubt if the big man will have such a poor season next with injuries, I think that was his worst season ever for missing games. Really see what he's made of when we have Jan available 90%+ of the time.

I thought yesterday was the best we've played for a while. I hope Doumbe gets a game in the final and a contract. He looks the part to me.

Life seems a lot better today. I just hope that Dunfermline going down won't prove an inspiration to them. I've always had a soft spot for them since Mr Stein's time (even though they beat us in the Cup). I don't recall too much nonsense spouted by any of them apart from their Chairman. Still, it would have been good if St Mirren had been relegated if only to see if Chick Young really took it badly.

The boy surely needs a bigger stage to play on.

I was at the game yesterday and thought Doumbe and Boruc were outstanding. Boruc bailed out the backline on a number of occasions and effectively won us the game by keeping Aberdeen to just 1.

Doumbe looked pretty pacey and his distribution is better than both Telfer and Wilson. He got a bit of glory in his eyes at the end and tried some fancy stuff but he is playing for a contract and that is forgivable in an end of season game. That said, most of the fancy stuff actually came off for him.

That makes 18 for the season (in all competitions) for big Jan. Considering that he has missed a large part due to injury that is a pretty decent return. Hopefully with a better strike partner next season and, even more importantly, better service from midfield, he will improve on that tally.

As for Lennon's remarks at the end of the game, Aberdeen fans often refer to themselves as sheep-coveters (being mindful of language violations!) so Lenny's comments were probably taken in good part by most of the away fans. Given what he has to put up with around the country I think his response was mild in the extreme.

Not too disappointed at the pars getting relegated. Their pathetic performance at Ibrox in May 2003 will irritate me for a long time and Yorkston's anti-Celtic rants (Taribo West, Bobo's chalenges etc etc) will not be missed. I also found their fans pretty abusive when they came down to play Stranraer (back in Jackie McNamara's time).

Next week at Pittodrie there is a reversal of sorts of May 2003. Where Jimmy Calderwoods team need a win over rangers to guarentee a European place.
As it stands I think Hearts are in the best position but if rangers do "owe" the two Jimmys a favour and "lie down" to a team they hate then it will certainly stink.

    Noel...1963 it was.

Our 'keeper, (and my hero at the time) Frank Haffey had a great game in the first match.

*mine tae Gordon, met him in Gordons on Glassford Street, he was a giant of a man, then again I was only about 12.

However in the replay he didn't do so well and "sold" the third goal.

*cant't recall the goals too much just one by ralphie brand to which I shouted out as we watched the highlights later that night on the tele "dead jammy", received a wallop on the back of the heid fae my da with the warning "cut that out, don't be like the mugs on the terracing and appreciate good fitba when you see it". No sure if that was the real reason for the skite or the fact that we got gubbed by THEM.

Some of my (tearful) recollections from that replay :-

The Rangers supporters chanting "Easy Easy" with about 15 minutes to go.

    * a year later when the Animals released "House on the Rising Sun" their follow up tae "Baby Let me Folllow you Down", I enquired of an aquaintance had he heard the Animals new record, his response was "aye all fricken season easy easy easy". Incidentally they stole that chant fae boxing fans.

"Celtic Ha Ha Ha" as they basically played about with us for the last 20 minutes taking the proverbial.

*taking the brahms and litz over our newly formed "Celtic Cha Cha Cha ".

After the third goal there was a mass exodus from the Celtic end.

We saw the Celts get their medals -in those days the losers went up to collect them after the winners got theirs.

Whilst that was happening Rangers were on the pitch with the Cup and I clearly recall Baxter (who no doubt was a great player)coming towards the Celtic end brandishing the Scottish Cup at us.

*Yet when we ran round the park 17 months later with the League Cup they rioted which resulted in laps of honour being banned no matter who played in the Final.

Celtic, not just the team but as a club were humiliated that evening and it was heartbreaking.

*that team and the one that gubbed snotterwell were all of the same religion which was tossed in Bob Kelly's face amid accusations that he was trying tae turn Celtic intae an all-Catholic side, something he strongly refuted with the statement that the Catholic schools of recent years had produced very successful sides and were almost unchallenged at the top of their leagues however they had a promising young player who was not Catholic and should go far............................Tommy Gemmell.

1963 was a dreadful year for the Celts.

*Agreed however it was also the season we bottomed out although we didnae know it at the time, there were rumblings within the club which would lead to the eventual return of the Messiah and the rest as we know it is history, however we still had to suffer the likes of Paddy Turner and Hughie Maxwell.

We played them 6 times losing 0-4, 0-3, 1-2, (League) 0-3, 0-3 (League Cup Section) and drawing that first Cup Final game.

*I was on a bus run tae Ayr with the Boys Guild (you might have been on that as well EDB) on the Sunday after the 1-2 game, it was buckettin doon, and we were all excited that we had managed tae score a goal against them much tae the consternation of the oul phunters who were chaperoning us.

So 1963, a year best forgotten.

*in the fitba sense aye however I can still recall wee Father O'Rourke on that horrible night, actually if my memory serves me well it was quite a nice evening, when the score drifted intae St Kessogs Hall where we had a Youth Night, obviously we were despondent but he tried tae cheer us up by proclaiming "when that wee bhoy Johnstone gets a bit older then Celtic will start to win cups again", amazingly when you look back that both Jinky and Frank Brogan who had tormented the hun full backs in the first game were dropped with inside forward Bobby "Bunnion" Craig replacing the wee mhan on the right wing.

Musically naw as we managed tae get rid of the sugar laced American style music with the Mersey sound changing how we looked and felt, bye bye tae brylcream and the DA.

OldTim67 @15.00 :- Thanks for the reply. My views on Mr Lennon are pretty well known, I think the way he has been treated due to his origins and faith are just wrong, it's wrong in any walk of life so the fact that it is football related makes no difference. On the Aberdeen fans, they have always struck me as sanctimonious scunners, they like to make out that they are somehow above the carry on of Rangers and Celtic fans, perhaps someone should inform them that just because a chant isn't sectarian doesn't mean it isn't loathsome, also I've had more violent attacks on busses in Aberdeen than I ever have at Celtic Park.

Martin :- That's sad news on Mr Johansen, I used to think I would never forget that goal in 66 then after watching a clip of it realised my memory was nothing like reality, I wonder how many other football memories from long ago are like that, though I'm sure the accurate exception in my case is Tom Forsyth's thunderous 50 yard shot to score the winner in the cup final :-)

Paul, "outstanding saves... one from a penalty... Aberdeen also hit the woodwork", etc. If you think this was a "comfortable win" for Celtic then you clearly are delusional!

Good to see the "take the foot off the gas now that there is nothing material at stake" syndrome doesn't just affect Celtic!

Valencia are still in it too. They're at home to Zaragoza and are 2-0 up at half time, with David Villa having scored just before the break, but having missed a penalty on 27 minutes too.

Interesting to note that if Zaragoza were to win tonight, they'd be within a point of Valencia and the last CL place, but Valencia are well in front.

    Valencia win 2-0.

Zaragoza improved considerably in the second half but failed to grab what would have been a significant score. One more goal would have meant this weekend broke the record for the number of goals scored in one round of matches in the history of the Spanish First Division.

In the end, the teams equalled the record - 35 in all ten matches.

It's exciting at the top. Real Madrid have the edge on Barcelona because of the head-to-head, but they're both on 66 points. Seville have 64 and Valencia have 62. Zaragoza are now well off the pace on 55. There are four games to go.

The four leaders are all away from home next week. All four will not win.

Seville are the only one still with an interest in cup competitions.

    Kojo,

I see master McAllister spending a season in the reserves first of all.

Master Naismith i reckon could be on the cards though, but as i said last night i would rather we went for a striker capabile of scoring the CL to partner Jan for next season.

Ideally i would like to see this however, the chances of of 3 new strikers arriving are remote. Not counting McAllister as i reckon one for the future.

    Jan
    McDonald
    New arrival of CL quality
    New arrival

Taxi for Miller, Magic and Beattie.

I happened to watch the play offs today. WGS was down watching the West Brom game las weeky. Everybody assuming he was watching Koumas.

However, Kevin Phlipps scoring for fun these days. The manager bought him before. He would be the kind of striker that would revel playing with Jan. Just a thought!!
