Celtic leave Rangers bewildered and distressed

My friends in Celtic, capturing Scott Brown, a Rangers fan, whom Rangers made clear their intention to sign, is an audacious move by our club. We remember what it is like when one of your own crosses the Glasgow divide to sign for the other side, despite being wanted by his ‘boyhood team’.

In 1989 it was bewildering and distressing and it will remain so today.

In signing for Celtic – and doing so when there is still three and a half months of negotiation time before deadline day – Scott Brown has issued a stark note of intention; he wants to play for a winning team, Celtic.

Rangers made their intentions about him known during the first week in January, and inexplicably briefed their compliant media that a deal would be concluded shortly, but you will recall the comments from Brown shortly thereafter about being keen to join Celtic.

Rangers might have been the club he followed as a boy, but they cannot match the allure of Celtic now the boy has become a professional footballer. Scottish football is today coming to terms with a new reality; a Scottish player, with a red white and blue heart, would rather pull on green and white hoops than a Rangers jersey.

Scotland is a changing place, who knows, perhaps thousands more Rangers fans aspire to play Champions League football for Celtic.

It is most unlike Celtic to be doing transfer business this early, though I am sure the presence of former Hibernian scout John Park, and the all-so-important Champions League qualifier to be played in August, have had an influence. Park has worked with Scott Brown and will know his value, and Gordon Strachan will know as well as the rest of us that a lot of work needs to be done before the Champions League is contemplated.

Central midfield certainly needs attention. The loss of Petrov last year, combined with the failure of Gravesen or Jarosik to hold down a regular starting place has hurt Celtic. The impending departure of Neil Lennon further illustrates the need for fresh talent.

Brown, still only 21, has been a first team player at Easter Road for four years, during which time he has matured into the first Scottish player in over 20 years to be coveted by a handful of top flight English clubs.

Gordon Strachan and Peter Lawwell deserve huge credit for securing his signature.

Welcome to Celtic, Scott.

I think you will have to check your facts on the subject - did our loyal friends not sign bodichenko ahead of Manure, Liverpool, Chelsea, WG's faves Arsenal, Barca, Real Madrid, Inter, Porto, Bayern, etc?

    Or am I mistaken?

From the end of the last thread:

    Morning Paul/CQN

Quick question for you and the rest of the blog - do we see the Brown deal as a new high watermark for Scottish talent or is this a one off deal driven by demand for a wanted player?

I ask because we can see the context of this deal in a number of ways. In a perverse way, if the money paid for Brown now factors in EPL/Sky deal inflation then, although this is bad for our numbers, it is even worse for our near neighbours.

If we can still compete even in a rising market then we simply accept the new paradigm and move on. If Rangers cap out at £2m per player max then inflation is terrible for them as it menas poor players or large debt.

Simply put, if you are the Killie chairmen and see the deal that has just went through, what are you now asking for Naismith?? As for Hibs, has the price on whitaker et al suddenly taken an inflationary leap?

£750k for McDonald is looking like good money all of a sudden as well.

Interested to hear more thoughts on the direction of Scottish player values.

THis is like going back to the 90s,except this time the good guys are holding the Aces, and it's the Dastards who are holding a pair of threes and Miss Bun the bakers'daughter.

Now we need to step up again[onwards and upwards]and sign another Marquee player eg Appiah.
Fixing the midfield could go a long way towards the team being successful and bringing back sexy football.

    good post paul,

The talk of a 'Red white and Blue heart' will have some of the bhoys bristling with indignation, but better a sinner saved and all that.

Besides, lets always rise above the 'Old Firm' guff. We're a Scottish club with Irish roots who welcome talented footballers of any creed or colour.

Except for Joey Barton. ( C'mon bhoys - I don't care how good he is - he's a horrible wee thug and shouldn'y be welcome here )

The history of our Club is full of examples of players from unCelticminded backgrounds who hav e gone on to achieve a place in the Hall of Fhame-most notably Jock Stein but also Bertie Peacock,John Thomson,Kenny Dalglish and Alfie Conn.

So signing Scott Brown is carrying on that fine tradition, what is groundbreaking is it shows Celtic flexing their financial muscle and kicking sand in the faces of the Darnel. It used to be you couldn't walk along Argyle Sfor guys selling the Big Issue-pretty soon it'll be the Rang### News!

Maybe there's something in this Gen of Dom after all..

The timing is spot on as well, with the Timcards up for renewal any day soon.

The Laptops are in a spin. Imagine that bad old Mr Brown going back on his word (allegedly). Not like Rankers, spending a tenner for every one of our fivers, not sacking any manager (ever), not spending all that JJB money.

The list is endless. Now trying to fill up the pages with links to McCulloch (given we are signing Brown they seem to have missed the point and this would be seen as just another kick in the teeth by TFOD. Also being linked with Whittaker, even though he would play in the same position as Huuton who we are reliably informed by the same sources is the best right back in Scotland.

I share the emotional contentment about the impact of this deal. It is a wee bit like Maurice Johnston in reverse (sorry, Judas for the purists).

But more than that. Like maybe nothing else so far, it crystalizes Paul's recurring theme on this blog. This is G.O.D. in action. And financially we've only just begun, as Karen sang so heartbreakingly beautifully. And we've been dominant for six years already!

Just a couple of personal caveats about Scott Brown, though. As I said yesterday, I've not seen much of him over the last couple of years so it's difficult for me to judge his worth. If Gordon and Peter think he's worth that, that'll need to be good enough for me at the moment.

I just wonder if the weight of expectation we're putting on a 21 year old might be too much. I hope and expect that we will have some older wiser heads in there beside him.

If the rest of the transfer window goes at this pace, what'll we do in July for excitement?

    #8 -

I would like to see another one-off big deal, if that makes sense?!? I am sure we can afford it, if some of the ones who didn't quite make the grade can be persuaded to leave. By that I primarily mean TG, SP and KM (oops - have I turned into madmitch?). I am sorry for all of them, but it just hasn't worked out, though I thought that they would be big players for us.

I though TG would boss around the midfield play-stoppers that abound in the SPL, that KM's speed (and 11 goals from wide left for Wolves in his final season there) would see him knocking in 20+ goals per season, and that SP would organise the defence. But, sadly no.

Time to go chaps, with our thanks.

I think this is great business. Let's all enjoy it. I couldn't care less if his heart is red white and blue, if he can play and gives his all for the green and white hoops. I can happily pick a best 11 of those who came from such "unCeltic" backgrounds (hate such phrases): Simpson, McGrain and Gemmell, Evans Stein and Peacock, Conn, Sutton, Larrson, Bobby Collins and wee Bertie. Everyone a legend. As you say, Paul, maybe thousands more are at this minute making the same decision. They are very very welcome.

I'm delighted we have signed Scott Brown. He's a great player and will hopefully be part of the spine of our club for years to come. The fact Rangers believed he was as good as theirs makes this all the sweeter!

On another not I've heard that Naismith has spoken to The Waistcoat on the phone several times about signing in the summer. I too thought that amounted to tapping up but apparently it goes on all the time. Where exactly is the dignity in such tactics?

    Hanif U Nodahistri

    Re: Joey Barton

We've heard it all before, albeit on a lesser scale with John Hartson and Craig Bellamy.

John Hartson aka Celtic Legend kicked Eyal Berovic in the head on the training ground.

Craig Bellamy among other misdemeanors attacked John Arne Riise with a golf club. Apparently

Traing ground bust ups happen all the time. Do you remember when mild mannered Tosh Mckinley broke Henrik Larsson's nose on the training ground?

I have no interest in the crime that Joey Barton's brother has commited and is in jail for, insofar as I will not judge him because of it. He is a quality player and a real winner on the pitch. I like his outspokenness too when he thinks certain players aren't good enough. That reminds me of another player previously from the red side of town.

If we were offered him for under £5M I'd be delighted to sign him.

I can't believe people are so pausitive about this! For 1 million more we could have signed an England international who has prooved himself in the Premiership! Scott Brown is a good young player, nothing more and nothing less! He has only scored 19 goals in 139 games for hibs about 5 a season. I don't think this signing shows ambition. We need to get more Evander Sno's and Artur Boruc's, players from abroad who know the European game and can do something for us in the champions league! Plus they come a lot cheaper. This is like the 90's when u blow lots of dosh on an average player. Plus, HE IS A RANGERS FAN! Why are people not annoyed at that! anyway, i need to chill, i am just annoyed at this transfer, don't see how it takes the club forward. Oh and remember the last Scottish player who was saught after by lots of English clubs, CHRISTIAN DAILY! Does that not ring alarm bells!

  • At 16/05/07 11:42, Matthew said…

Another thing i strongly believe is that he has been badly advised. The cauldron of the old firm is not really the sort of place where you can afford to have a few bad games which lets face it, as a young player he will need to have to learn a bit more. Moreover, any 4.5million signing for Celtic is expected to play a pretty major role in the clubs ambitions. Is Scott Brown going to be able to take that pressure? I don't think he has the sort of big personality that he needs to be able to pull it off. He would have been better off at Middlesbrough where he would have had much less of a spotlight on him than he will have up in Scotland. Come on, lets just give up on his signature and be properly ambitious by signing Barton!

I am not annoyed at Scott Brown being a Rangers fan since childhood is because any person who pulls on the Hoops is part of the Celtic Family.

The list is endless in relation to Rangers fans who have served our great club with distinction.

I dont care if a man is black, white, pink, lilac or beige,i dont mind if he gives funny shakes to his martian mates, hel,i dont even mind if he`s from outwith Glasgow,as long as he gives 100% when he is with us.

Celtic have concluded this deal like an ANNOAN wet dream.

Brown choosing to come to Celtic over Rangers shows Celtic´s ambition far more than Brown´s. Brown has chosen wisely and money although a factor cannot be considered the main one here as he could have earned more down south - ask Shaun Maloney

If Thompson is as close a friend as they say then who´s to say that he´s saying something different to his good mate that he´s not saying in the papers. "DONT COME TO RANGERS" and dont forget that Deek and Caldwell are his buddies also.

Celtic instead of waiting until the end of the summer to pick up on any old deal have had this one in the bag seemingly since January. That´s a very encouraging sign

The perennial phoney media war which Rangers win every summer has been won by Celtic before it has even started.

I just hope that we hang on to most of our players. No need for a cull.

    Paul,
I'd start working on a justification as to why selling Naka was a financially astute piece of business that Celtic could not ignore.
I think he will leave and for a huge fee. Skoosh is best playing the old inside right position, an area of the field that Naka currently operates in.
We can use the cash to invest in a midfield general.

take your own advice and chill out - things could be a whole lot worse for Celtic this morning

Like you have done this morning, yesterday I also questioned the signing of Scott Brown not due to his skills but if £4.5m was a realsitic price

Clearly it is the going rate and if that what the market determines then so be it and good on Celtic for being in a position to play the market at that level.

The fact he is a Rangers fan from boyhood should not annoy you. paul67 makes it clear that the lad himself chose to further his career at CP rather than across the southside.

Good on him - I couldn't care less who he supports as long as his committment and focus is now on making Celtic a better team.

Frankly this "celtic minded" stuff is beginning to bore me. As many have shown here this morning the boyhood dreams of many legendary Celtic players were to actually pull on a blue jersey but that didn't stop them becoming an integral part of the clubs history and folklore.

I suppose the thing is to enjoy these days rather than grumble about them

    Cheers

Are we seriously suggesting we spend £5m on someone who was arrested this morning and is available on a 'please god somebody take him fee'? Stubbing a lit cigar out on a youth team player's eye is a little bit different from my definition of 'a real winner'.

Joey Barton has been an England international for 7 minutes in a friendly. Scott Brown played (exceptionally well) for 120 minutes against Italy, that makes him more experienced at the top level. At 24 years old he's hardly dripping with medals, experience and show piece performances to suggest he's a better bet than 22 year old Brown.

Scott Parker and Kevin Nolan are examples of far better players who also manage to be professionals, unlike Joey Barton. I hope Joey Barton deals with his issues and overcomes what seems to be some personal issues and fulfills his potential, whatever that may be. Just not at Celtic, he's just not worth the risk.

"Hibernian FC today confirmed that agreement has been reached with Celtic FC for the transfer of Scott Brown for an undisclosed sum.

Scott (21) will join Celtic when the transfer window opens early next month. Until then, he remains a Hibernian player and is available for selection for the final SPL fixture of the season at the weekend. He has been at Hibernian since he was 13 years old.

The midfielder had been given permission by Hibernian to speak with a number of Clubs – including two in the English Premiership – with the final choice that of the player and his representative.

Scott said: “Hibernian has been fantastic for me and I have enjoyed every minute at the Club. I am delighted that I stayed and helped the Club to win the CIS Cup – I will always remember that day at Hampden. I would like to thank the fans for the tremendous support they have given me over the years, and everyone at the Club who has helped me with my career.”

Manager John Collins said: “Scott has been a fantastic player for this Club and while we are all sorry to see him go, we wish him well for the future. He has done everything we asked of him and more, and played a big part in delivering our first trophy for 16 years, and I am sure the fans will give him a great send-off.”

Chairman Rod Petrie said: “Everyone knew Scott would be leaving at the end of the season and, as we anticipated, he has had a choice of Clubs. In fact, he could have moved to the English Premiership for a fee which was less than the Club will receive from his chosen move. Scott has given up a portion of the fee to which he was entitled as part of the transfer arrangements. He wants that to go for the benefit of Hibernian’s youth development programme, and we are grateful to him for that fantastic gesture.

The timing is never ideal but we had been in contact with a number of clubs since the transfer window closed in January. Throughout this time and despite all the speculation, Scott has shown a great attitude and he has been a credit to the Club, to himself and to his family."

It is official from the website.

I think could be the most significant signing weve made for years , for the reasons Paul has made in the article and also for football reasons.

I genuinely believe he can be a revelation for us.

Stephen Kenny recently described him as "the most mobile player in northern Europe" and I don't think thats an exaggeration.

For what its worth I don't believe any of us give a monkey's that he might have supported Rangers , do we?

    Welcome aboard, Scott.

    Barton is not a'total winner'.
    Total psychopath,perhaps.
You need a bit of devil in you to make it to the top in professional sport;you don't need to be bad to the bone.If you sign him you might as well put in a bid for Bowyer and Ricksen as well, create the dream midfield.

I take your points guys. I am starting to be convinced about him. Here is another angle though and one which i have been concerned about for a long time now. Celtic have always complained about not having a challenge in the SPL. Surely we are shooting ourselfes in the foot by buying the competition up from around us? I mean one or two players from the SPL is great but think about it, Hartley, Pressley, Riordan, Caldwell, Brown, McDonald, Wilson and Mark Brown to name but a few. I definately think Wilson was worth it but surely the others are taking away the competition from the SPL when Celtic are really needing to be challenged more in the SPL if they want to succeed in Europe.

Dunno Greenlion. But given that there were reportedly several offers from south of the border, then it is inevitable that there will have been at least one from England which was less than Celtic's... so he could have gone to the EPL "for a fee which was less than the Club will receive from his chosen move."

But he didn't, because he wants to be a winner, and to play in the Champions League.

    Welcome to Paradise Scott.

And well done and thank you to the board and management of Celtic for making this deal possible.

    Happy days

Totally agree with you Bhoy_Molloy on that one.

A few seem to be believing the hype concerning Barton from the press and confusing him with unfortunately one member of his family (who if I remember is not directly related).

He doesn't have that bad a discipliniary record on the pitch. If he signs, I'll be happy as I believe as a player he could do a job for us.

On a complete side issue, will be in North Devon with Senior Baldy and family for the Cup final. Is anyone aware of any bars that will be showing the game in the Ilfracombe/Barnstaple area?

Have checked Celticbars.com with no luck. Any help much appreciated..

    As its now officially confirmed....

Welcome Mr Brown, an inspired piece of business so early in the summer (well, by being before the summer). A player with drive, pace, agression, direct, forward thinking, fearless, mobile, with unbelievable energy levels - every thing our midfield is crying out for.

Whether he would become a better player in the premiership than at Celtic I honestly dont know. He is however, what Celtic need, and that at the moment is what matters. Im not sure he is worth 4.5million as a footballer yet, but sure has the potential to be worth even more than that. I dont remember the last young player to have such physical AND mental attributes to compliment an already decent footballing technique.

If Brown is coached and managed in a good and positive manner, I can see him becoming not only a great asset on the pitch but one whose value could soar. The modern game relies on ability and strengths that Scott Brown is blessed with at a young age. Top midfielders not only need desire and skill, but need to match that will enourmous energy levels, and that is where at the highest level many players fall short. Scott Brown will never fall short on that account. Technique can be improved through playing at a good level and with good players and coaches.

However having watched a fair bit of him this season, he has grown out of a lot of the nonsence previously in his game. To the young mans credit - this has not dampened his spirit or effected his game in any thing other that a positive way.

We can debate the merits of Joey Barton another day I suppose, but Scott Brown plays like a winner.

If we get two more players of the attitude and fight of of Scotty Brown, could we compete with the Seville team?

Yes they had Larsson, and maybe that would set them apart, but the difference between Boruc and Douglas might cancel that out.

What I do know is that we need winners like Thompson, Sutton, Hartson, and Lennon to make our current team successful.

Scott Brown is a good start.

    Infact a great one....

How can Scott Brown have 'chosen Celtic over Rangers' when as far as i can see, Hibs have never accepted an offer from Rangers for the player?!

Lets not kid ourselves on here, if they had been able to match our terms to both Hibs and to the player, he'd be at ibrox just now.

Here's hoping that we have the financial muscle for many years to come which will deny them the opportunity to offer contracts to the rising stars of the Scottish game.

    This Man Craig
Are you seriously suggesting that as a result of Scott Brown playing for Scotland against Italy, this makes him more experienced at the top level than a guy who has played every week in the Premiership for the past 5 seasons??

A comment from south of the border: putting one over Rangers is all well and good, and a source of great pleasure for those with Rangers fans in the next cubicle, but it's not what makes the club flourish. We still need a proper defence: will Scott no. 2 help here?

At international level, he's more experienced - it was a direct quote that for £1m we could have got 'an England international'. On Wikipedia his football career merits 2 paragraphs, his disciplinary problems 5. We are not talking about a guy who occassionaly gets in a wee scrape here.

I know he's a decent player, I just don't think he's worth the hassle. The Bellamy baggage I can see being worth the hassle, that guy has something others do not.

Scott Parker, Kevin Nolan, Stan Petrov could all bring the same attributes as Barton, we're not talking about them though because they haven't been put up for sale or arrested this morning!!!!

Greatly impressive signing but not comparable with Maurice Johnston, who had already been a successful Celtic player before he left to play for Nantes.

2 season later he is then paraded at Celtic park in a Celtic strip after both he and the club stated he was rejoining us in the (89) summer. He declared during the media interview that Celtic was the only club he had ever wanted to play for and intended to play for Celtic until he could play no more.

Weeks later he was ushered into a media room at Ibrox wearing a sheepish grin alongside Graeme Souness, this time saying he wanted to play for a team that was capable of winning trophies.

None of this can be compared to the Scott Brown signing. And yes it still hurts to this day. He was my favourite football player until it happened.

SB is an excellent signing. IMO he will be worth at least the transfer fee in 3 or 4 years time and probably in 6 or 7 if we extend his new contract. Good signing - good business - good show of intent.

One complaint may be that I LOVE the closing of the transfer window (even though not much ever happens) and this sort of good management is in danger of scuppering that! Tcho!

ps Working in Glasgow today is a bit of a nostalgia trip. All the Sevilla and Espanyol fans are having a great time out there and it takes me back to Seville and how good a time I had. Still of the opinion that we wont get to a CL final in my lifetime and that we would be better off in the Eufa Cup each year - not negative - just remembering Seville and thinking what chance another.

    Welcome to Celtic, Scott

I broke one of my own rules last nicht, and listened to the Radio Snyde Phone-In, and whilst it was funny too listen to BFDJ's voice rising several octaves, I found myself getting angry as the show continued.

Radio Clyde gave a public platform for two people who are involved in an official capacity in one way or another for Rangers F.C, cast numerous aspertions on the moral character and football ability of Scott Brown.

That, in my opinion, is an utter disgrace.

What relly irked me was that they were conveying the official view of Chairman Moonbeam and Darth Waistcoat, whilst giving the impression that they were doing so as impartial "pundits".

Also, when Le Merde left Celtic too sign for them, it was the biggest stitch-up in Scottish football history.

    Why?

When he "signed" for us, Agent Orange was nowhere to be seen. When asked about this by the "Voice of a Football", Le Merde exclaimed something along the lines of "being a gig boy now", and he could negotiate deals for himself.

However, Agent Orange was at Ibrox a few weeks later, when Le Merde showed up there.

I wonder what changed in the intervening weeks?

I know it doesn't interest a lot of people on here, but I see Celtic becoming the driving force behind a far more competetive Scotland team in the very near future.

We now have most of the young Scottish talent on board, with hopefully Naismith to come.

I think the signing of John Park may prove to be the shrewdest piece of business by Celtic in many a year.

I am not saying that I hope to have all Scottish players,I want to have 11 very good players, and if they are Scottish, all well and good.

Maybe with the Scotland team in their highest ever ranking,we will hear a bit less of the constant putting down of players, based purely,it seems,on where they were born, well,if they were born in Scotland.

And maybe cut them the same slack that is given to "big signings" that come from other leagues or countries.

When the final whistle went in Seville, after extra time, Jose Mourinho ordered all of his Porto players to go to the Celtic Supporters and applaud them, presumably for helping making the final such a fantastic experience in terms atmosphere, colour, etc.

We were all singing our heads of at the time in absolute defiance of being on the wrong end of the result, and of course to remind the Celtic players that we were still 100% behind them.

When the Porto players assembled in front of us we all stopped singing and began to loudly boo them, fair doos, they did after all have the audacity to beat us. However I've always been puzzled as to why mo
