Estoril.

Jock Stein was in bullish mood as he spoke to the press last night, “We don’t just want to win the European Cup, we want to do it playing good football, to make neutrals glad we won it, pleased to remember how we won it.”

On the outcome, he would only suggest that unlike most European Cup Finals, which have seen the first team to score, lose the match, he believes the first team to get their nose in front, will win the game, an acknowledgement of the unstoppable force that is his own team once they get going, and the immoveable object that is Inter Milan when they are defending a lead.

Celtic left their base at the Palacio Hotel in Estoril, a coastal resort 15 miles from Lisbon, this morning to travel to the Estádio Nacional for their allocated training session to find that Inter, who were not due to train until the afternoon, had arrived early and completed their session.

Instead of returning to their hotel, Herrara and the Inter players stayed behind to watch Celtic, which convinced Jock Stein to change his training plans. Tommy Gemmell was deployed as a striker and Billy McNeill, a winger, for the benefit of the watching, laughing, Inter Milan players.

It remains to be seen if Celtic can transform their indignation at having their preparations disrupted into a cutting edge for tomorrow. From the reaction Mr Stein gave when asked about Inters’ conduct, Mr Herrera should perhaps have concentrated on his own teams preparations. Sometimes it is better not to poke an opponent with a stick, even if one is available.

The Celtic players stayed out of the sun after returning to Estoril. This evening, they walked to a nearby country club, run by ex-pat Brodie Lennox, to break the monotony of the hotel. The journey home ended in the players climbing a fence and crossing a field, after trainer, Neilly Mochan, suggested a shortcut that Tensing Norgay would have found daunting.

On hearing that tomorrow is a Holiday of Obligation, Jock Stein asked friend and Celtic supporter, Fr Bertie O’Reagan, to say an early Mass for the players.

“We’re on our way to Lisbon, we shall not be moved” can be heard at airports and harbours, in taverns and roadside lay-bys, as a green and white cavalcade travels south towards old Lisbon town.

Like the caravans of biblical times, an exodus of thousands is descending on the Portuguese capital, each and every one convinced they will return to Glasgow with the European Cup.

They have received a warm welcome from the locals, who have clearly been won over by the Scots, to the annoyance of Herrera, who appealed to the Portuguese to support their fellow Latins.

Stein announced his team to the press, a sign of confidence which Herrara could not match, as Inter playmaker Suarez remains a doubt. The 11 Scots who carry the hopes and dreams of thousands are, Simpson, Craig, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Clark, Johnstone, Wallace Chalmers Auld and Lennox.

The moment of destiny is near.

Pob from the last thread. My understanding is that Celtic got a late allocation of tickets from the SFA. Think they are returns from Dunfermline.

    Can anyone shed any light on the email I recived, it contents are as follows;

"Have a read of this, make of it what you will.

A secret meeting between The Scottish Executive, Glasgow City
Council, The Commonwealth Games Committee and corporate
Institutions took place in London's Claridges Hotel to discuss the expansion of Celtic Park to 80,000. Work to be completed in time for the games and to coincide with the opening of a new underground rail link. Planning permission will be a formality and new regulations will be put in place by the Scottish Executive to circumvent any legal challenge that may arise due to the fact that a section of the Main Stand is at this point listed. Celtic Football Club will not have to finance any of the expansion plans as funding will come from the public purse and corporate finance. It is understood that a leading Wall St investment broker will fund 60% of the whole project in exchange for the naming rights to Celtic Park, Celtic's current sponsors NIKE will also play a major role.

It is estimated that CFC will make over £150,000,000 on the Naming
Rights over 10 years, while increasing the number of season tickets
    available from 53,000 to 69,000.
At present it is believed to be Goldmann Sachs and Delta Airlines
that are in competition for the naming rights
Dermot Desmond and Brian Quinn of Celtic are believed to have
instigated proceedings as far back as October 2006"

Just reading those 11 names still brings a chill.

On the ticket nonsense, the root cause is the decision to split tickets "equally" between the two teams by the SFA. It was clear Dunfermline would not sell an allocation several times their average home gate. It was also clear that we would have a greater demand than an allocation less than the number of season ticket holders.

There needs to be a way to allocate tickets that favours football fans who put money into the game.

New Hertha Berlin signing Jaroslav Drobny has revealed that he rejected the chance to join Celtic.

The Czech goalkeeper secured a move to Hertha from Bochum earlier this week, putting pen-to-paper on a three-year year deal.

He announced that he had also had offers from Greece, and has now claimed that Celtic were also keen.

"Celtic were interested, but the discussions with Dieter Hoeness were without problems, that is why I decided for Hertha," Drobny told CTK.

    antsman,

The story regarding Drobny is only partially told on SSN.
The report I read this morning in the Daily Express stated that the player basically rejected a move to Celtic as he was told he would only be back-up to Artur and not the first choice.

Basically I think he'd have been a replacement to Marshall, but that just my opinion.

I dont know if anyone has saw it yet but Sky SPorts are running an interview with Willaim Gallard the UEFA spokesman.

He places the trouble caused last night firmly at the door of 'some Liverpool' fans. The interviewers keeps pushing him and tries to blame UEFA etc. He then asks if it is a British problem. Gallard says something like it happens more frequently when British teams are involved but a few years ago we had 3 times the amount of Celtic supporters in Seville without tickets than there was in Athens and there was no trouble as thye all stayed in teh center of town and watched the game and partied. Thats the ways fans should be he said.

Its nice to still be remembered...

The Daily Telegraph[SIMBT]are serialising Lemon's autobiography-Lisbon is tomorrow but today it's about his history making appearance at Wembley in April'67.

Before the game Faither[the 36 year old debutant]admitted that he could do with'a wee sip'to steady his nerves-apparently this medicine was usually available in the dressing room at CP,to settle any prematch nerves. So Stevie Chalmers, who was in the squad but not playing, produced a half-bottle he'd purchased in London that morning for that very purpose.

And suitably refreshed, relaxed and fortified the Scots went out and produced the second greatest footballing performance of that Annus Mirabilis..

[Anyone remember what was historic about BL's performance that day?]

    25th MAY
    Zurich fell in Switzerland,
    They fell in Glasgow too,
Then the French went down three one each time,
    And bid the cup Adieu.
The 'Slavs won at home but went down two one,
And the Czechs were sent their way,
And the Celts were bound for Lisbo town,
    on the 25th May.
    Twelve thousand loyal Celtic fans,
In bus and train and car,
    Travelled eighteen hundred to see,
    The greatest team by far.
they came to cheer on the boys in green,
And help them win the day,
And beat Inter Milan in Lisbon town,
    On the 25th of May.
The game was only eight minutes gone,
    When Inter Milan they scored,
If they tried from then to hard my Bhoys,
They could'nt have scored one more.
And when half-time came with the score the same,
    The Celts did not dismay,
They would win the Cup in Lisbon town,
    On the 25th of May.
A goal must come and come it did,
    And Gemmell was our man,
Then Chalmers scored and the Celtic roar,
    Was heard by gay Milan.
There's been battles won by our Celtic sons,
But they showed the world the way,
When they beat Milan in Lisbon town,
    On the 25th of May.
So heres to Simpson, Clark and Craig,
    To Johnstone and McNeil,
    To Chalmers,Wallace and Lennox, Auld,
    For they refused to yield.
And hears toMurdoch and Gemmell too,
To Stein who showed the way,
To the greatest team who showed the world,

    On the 25th of May.

    On the 25th of May.

Would anyone suggest paying ten big ones for him today? You have your answer.

It's not our place to advocate the selling of our top player, if we ,as a support, harbour any hopes of progressing.

Raman Bhardwaj on Scotland Today was kind enough to remind the nation that today is the 35th anniversary of some non-event in Barcelona. The match was followed, he said, by a 'pitch invasion - some may call it a pitch invasion, others would call it a celebration.' Nah, it's still an invasion Raman. Check the facts with the Catalan polis.

As someone on here said of Clyde's sports department, you can't help but think that Scotland Today's sports department consists of someone reading the back page of the Daily Record.

No point changing for changes sake and to cash in on Naka without replacing like for like would either just be changing for the sake of it or else buying an inferior, immature product and pocketing the change.

For an ambitious team, there should be players to whom normal rules don't apply. At the moment, Naka is our special one. I would argue even more so than Boruc.

Anyway, direrent strokes etc. I must go and trim my moustache and cut my toenails as the Road to Hampden starts at 6.00 a.m tomorrow morning around these parts.

I was feeling frustrated and annoyed the smornin at my futile attempts to get a ticket via the online system Celtic has in place.

I tried to balance this by thinking well their is a limited amount of tickets and knowing nothing about IT i accepted the situation.

Now when i read Pob's post from the last thread at 11.07 am today i'm raging.

I bow to Pob's knowledge of IT. If Celtic CAN have a system that can handle 60,0000 applications in the first hour of tickets going on sale AND NO NEED FOR A QUEUE ma question is WHY DONT THEY.

Ma experience was to be tortured for over an hr in anticipation of moving up a virtual imperceptibly slow queue to be told my session had timened out.

Second attempt my time estimator just went back to the beginning again after appx 40 mins.

We accepted £8millionish for Stan The Journey Man Petrov and we have only now, adequately replaced him with Scott Brown at a cost of £4.4 Million. Hopefully

We have bought Gravesen, Jarosik and Hartley with the money from the sale of Petrov and all have been spectacularly expensive flops. Please tell me why we should sell our best and most creative player who still has two years left on his contract?

Why are you so confident he can be replaced by a cheaper model? Are you honestly advocating selling Naka on the basis that his contract runs out in two years and he may not sign an extension that he hasn't even been offered? That doesn’t make sense!

Honestly, what exactly is the point in that? What good is money if you are devaluing the team?

When’s the “it makes sense to sell Boruc” post coming?

  • At 24/05/07 20:07, Bloke109 said…

    gerry, block 105

Indeed that's true about the length of contract - pgtips introduced the Jan 08 thing and I responded. Wrongly.

I'm pretty much of the 'king is dead, long live the king' view but think it's a pretty cynical, bottom-line only approach to just see players as assets - you could run through our entire squad pretty much and say they're all for sale as we'd probably make a bit of a profit on each. Some players are worth more than a balance sheet figure - intangible value I believe the guys without the calculators would term it.

  • At 24/05/07 20:19, ticketyboo said…

10 million. Its alot of money - could go a long way in providing 2 blue chippers - if only spurs valued naka at 10.

    bloke109

I agree with your sentiments but that would be utopia, I don't think it is cynical to see the club make a tidy profit on the player, if and only if some other team were willing to make an offer in the region that was mentioned earlier. Not one of us would want to lose our best player(s) but better players have left in the past for a lot less value and we have got by.
Please do not misunderstand me, I am not advocating we do sell him.

I know you are just looking for a rise but I cannot resist

The reason we continue to renew our season-books is in the hope that the next season will be the one where the team plays sparkling football, wins the treble and gets to a European final

Naka is a proven big-match winner -- he has the skill and temperament to shine in Europe and is now integrated into the Celtic system

I would much prefer to be watching him play for the next 2 years than hearing about Celtic clearing off all their debts - that will happen anyway if we keep on succeeding on the pitch
