Financial implications of Celtic strip launch

We have a big week coming up, so I thought I would get the ‘dirty little subject’ out of the way before we move into anniversary mode.

The new home strip, due for release on Friday, is certain to be the biggest seller in the club’s history. You and I will both buy it, as will over half a million others, but where we buy them will have a significant impact on Celtic.

Nike pay Celtic £5m each year for the right to manufacture and distribute official Celtic merchandise. If you buy your kit from a Celtic shop, via the web site or mail-order, the club will earn retail margin from your purchase, however, Celtic do not earn a penny if you buy from any other retailer.

I reckon there is in excess of £5m worth of retail margin to be earned from home shirts alone, more than the money Celtic paid Hibs to secure the services of Scott Brown, a deal Rangers, who sold their retail operations a year ago, could not afford.

The erstwhile bhoycott of JJB Sports after they assumed control of Rangers retail operation was fine as far as it went, but it neither hurt Rangers, nor benefited Celtic if sales switched to another retailer.

Owning their own retail operation gives Celtic a structural advantage over Rangers that will last until season 2016-17, however the impact of that advantage will depend on how many of us buy direct.

Ironically though it will be the same people who buy their tops from Sportsworld or wherever that complain about our lack of signings in the summer.

JJB/Sportsworld will undercut the Celtic shop and online by £5-£10 most of the time.
I prefer to see this cash going to the club. Others may prefer to give it to a backer of Rangers RFC.
In any case, thanks for reminding us all.

Those who buy from JJB cannot plead ignorance !

    Brattback,

If you order direct from Celtic and ask specifically for a top without the Carling logo, then I believe that you will be able to have one. I don't know if they charge any extra though.

I will certainly be asking for one without the logo, as the Lions' shirt wasn't defaced by such advertising. And I don't really agree with sports clubs advertising alcohol (or sugary carbonated drinks).

I'm sure we'll be criticised for devaluing the future potential worth of shirt advertising deals, should lots of us opt for a "clean" shirt, but I'm happy to take the flak.

I saw some of the Conference play-off final on TV yesterday, and noted the advertising around the perimeter... most prominently for VodkaT, Cheap Booze, and gambling. Is this really what we want to see our children brainwashed with?

As usual a few of you tripping yourselves up here. As Paul mentioned Celtic get £5 million pounds from Nike to manufacture our kit and sell it at a profit around the world, If for whatever reason you buy a celtic top from any store, (and I do not advocate JJB they should be avoided)Celtic have still earned a share of the 5 million. If our strips do not sell anywhere else but through official Celtic retail, Nike will not be bringing £5 million to the table day one.

Kittoch, incorrect. Nike pay Celtic a guaranteed £5m each year for the right to manufacture and distribute Celtic merchandise.

If Celtic sell this merchandise through their retail outlets, they earn the retail margin. This margin is not related to the initial £5m.

Kit sold through other retail outlets earns Celtic no incremental money, and does not impact the guaranteed £5m from Nike.

Does Celtic have to buy our tops from Nike?

I think the top is for sale through Celtic at £30, JJB’s will sell it £5-£10 cheaper than the Celtic shops, how can they do this……

Do they buy in bulk and get a better discount?
Do the just take the “hit” with the top to get us into their store?

Has Celtic not got a deal with Nike that we get the better price?
You would think Nike would sell (lets just say) the top to us for £20 but sell the top to JJB’s for £25 or does Nike not care where or who sells the top as long as it gets sold?

If you buy the hoops in France it will not have any "I am a proud member of the old firm and I am portrayed as a staling in a flock" advertising on it. It´s not allowed in France and I´d be flabbergasted if you were charged for not wanting it. Surely not ?! Maybe we need to look at a reversible shirt where one side does not have the "old firm" logo present

Anybody that chastises anyone for buying a cheaper option elsewhere nees to take a good close look at themselves. I think that the Celtic top that I got in Wishy market circa 1972 has made Celtic more than a few thousand pounds since then and I have been told in good faith that there were around 200 Celtic tops in that particular batch alone.

You mention the catalogue. I've got to say that it continues to disappoint me both on moral and commercial grounds. All the models are the purest white which effectively tells our non-white fans how important our commercial staff think they are. This is wrong because we are an inclusive club and want to make sure people know that and wrong becasue I bet you we'd be more attractive to our worldwide support if we illustrated our global fanbase in our advertising. Perhaps someone who has the ear of the decision makers, Paul(?)could raise it with them.

Gerry, antsman, I am sure Nike will not give away margin to Celtic that they can keep themselves. Not sure what JJB will sell this shirt for, but I checked last year when the away strip was launched and they sold at retail price.

Brendan, interesting point about ethnicity of the models. I know of one Scottish company who noticed the all white line up of their models before going print and included a non-white person at the last minute. I was less than convinced by their action and found is slightly cynical.

What was the recent TV ad, where a black man appeared for a few seconds to say, “I’m the token black man”?

You are correct, the adverts should reflect the fan base (or Scottish society), which is no longer all white, but I am not sure how this translates to policy, should be a ‘token’ be required?

At the very least it is worth monitoring. I will pass on your thoughts.

Our club ordered a complete set for a team we sponsor and it arrived without the sox, then they sent the sox and charged us again not only that but this time we were hit with a Canadian tax.
Long story short we ended up paying about 6 quid per pair times 15 more than we should have

Agree on the relative merits of Skoosh and Owen Hargreaves.

In my opinion, Man Ure are paying WAAAAAAAYYYYYY over the oddds for him, the same as they did with Carrick.

It seems that once you are an Inn-gerr-lunnd international player, no matter how limited in ability, the price rockets up.

Unless of course, you are "English international" Paul Konchesky, available for a mere £500,000 and a reported target for the rain-jurs.

I guess then, that he will be the best Inn-gerrr-lund left back ever, with the rain-jurs getting a player who, like the recent signing of the French Kris Boyd,is really worth millions!

    Paul,
I agree with the sentiment regarding buying from the Celtic shop instead of high street multiples. Unfortunately the reality that the Celtic shop is generally the most expensive means of purchasing the merchandise is a huge disincentive for any individual ( especially when buying for two or three kids)
If the Celtic shop was the best value the decision for all fans would be a simple one.
    It isn't.

On the Saturday before Seville I queued for the 'new' Carling strip .
The Celtic Super Store had posters stating that they 'Would not be beaten on price'.
I was glad to be keeping the money in the family, and delighted that the purchase also made economic sense.
Unfortunately the tops were flying off the shelf and a long sleeve version was all that was left in my size, not recommended in the searing heat of Spain.
I declined and reluctantly made my way to a shopping centre where I knew I would have to pay more.....
.... the shirt was £8 cheaper than I had just been quoted at the Super Store.

    So the question remains.
How can we maximise the revenue for the club whilst delivering value to the fans?

Suggestion for a few new threads at no extra cost(excuse the pun)

Old firm yay or nay ?

Celtic fans. Loosing our identity .. good or bad ?

If I also forgo the trips to Tesco and tell Mrs Onlooker that we are all on the 'match day diet' will this make be a better supporter?

Pies ,Bovril,Pop Corn & hot-dogs could all be purchased each fortnight and frozen on return.

Think of the extra players we could buy with the extra revenue, think of the turnover of season tickets as the life expectancy plummets.
    You know it makes sense.

    Celtic retail:clearly not a charity.

Celtic fans/supporters/customers:losing our identity? Is it possible for all 3 to co-exist,like in the leaves of the shamrock?

Are there supporters out there who were at their happiest when the team were rotten, the board were inept and the ground was semi-deserted?Is this not'supporting'the team in its purest form?

These are hypothetical statements;as currently my state of mind is that PlatWAT has b#ggered off and left me in tears.

Leaving aside what has been concluded thus far (us, McDonald and Brown, Rangers Gow, Broadfoot, Darcheville), it's the goalkeeping situation that looks interesting. Despite Rumour Mill's musings on the McGregor situation, he seems to be number 1, with Derek Stillie turning Rangers down in favour of a law degree and Jamie Langfield rejecting them to fight for his place at Abderdeen. We meanwhile have already Mark Brown, the famed 'best shot stopper in the league' according to the Sun tv ad. I know who I'd rather have as back-up.

And then there's Paul Konchesky linked with a £600,000 move. A classic case of a player running with his shoulders, he clearly fits the identikit of Smith's 07-08 squad. Scotland Today managed to show twice a clip of a 20 yard free-kick by him go 5 yards off target. Smith's understated spin 'I want a team of winners' is hysterical, as is Scotland Today's reporting of Rangers' cooling interest in Naismith of Kilmarnock, who now interests Hearts. He's too dear, is how they didn't report that.

Meanwhile Scott McDonald is BBC Sportsound player of the season with 8 man of the match performances. Nearest Celtic player (Naka) has 4, Naylor 2.
