Press conference, Gordon Strachan on attitude and experimentation

Gordon Strachan has yet to received notice from the SFA explaining why he was ordered to the stand against Hearts on Sunday, and so is still unable to decide if he will appeal, “If I was sent off for being a strange wee man I cannot appeal against it.

“Until I find out what I was sent off for I cannot appeal. It cannot for aggressive behaviour, it cannot be for swearing.

“If it’s for being 5’5”, I have a problem.”

The Celtic manager said he had been experimenting with the team during the last couple of games, “We have earned the right to experiment; it’s better to learn lessons now than in preseason or after the new season starts.

“I am happy with the last couple of performances, but the results have not been as good. If we get the same attitude against Rangers [as they showed against Hearts] I will be happy.

Gary Caldwell was asked if he could play the holding midfield role next season in the absence of Neil Lennon, “It’s something I have done for Scotland a few times, it is a position I enjoy.

“I came here to develop as a player and to be challenged. There will be more players arriving in the summer, so the pressure [to perform] will remain.

Celtic have lost their way since trooping off the field at half time against Rangers in February. Defeat in that game seemed to sap cohesion from the team; despite progressing to the Scottish Cup Final and retaining the league, they have scored exactly same number of goals they have conceded since that day.

Perhaps a visit to Ibrox will produce the spark needed for the Cup Final.

GS hates being interviewed on the telly, that’s quite clear. His abrasive interview style is uncomfortable when we win, and downright obnoxious when we get beat. Personally I think its nerves, or a lack of confidence, the best means of defence is offence type of thing.

I don’t go along with the 'doesn't suffer fools gladly' excuse, who does suffer fools gladly? No that’s simply an excuse for bad manners.

The excuse that we wont be appealing his sending off last weekend because we don’t know what he got sent off for and neither does Gordon - is quite bizarre. Surely they don’t expect us to believe that GS went meekly to the stand without protest even though he had no idea why he was being sent off?

I sincerely hope we give the Teddies a right good thumping tomorrow, then I think we will see GS relax a little bit, more confidence, less arrogance. That’s what's needed I think - he has to believe more in himself and lighten up when he is being interviewed. He is after all representing our club.

Anyone got updates from the youth game that's on CH67 just now? Thanks

  • At 04/05/07 14:46, BigChipSuk said…

I'm interested in what's going on in the youth games too (at CP and Murray Park). If anyone has Ch67 I'd be obliged if they'd keep us informed.

Celtic are three behind Rangers on GD going into the games. If Rangers beat Hibs 1-0 and Celtic beat Falkirk 4-0 they will be equal on points, GD, and goals for & against... and by the league rules there will be a play-off. After the outcome of the Youth Cup Final I don't think we really want that!

So the minimum requirement is that we win by three goals more than Rangers win by (assuming we both win!) and we score four more goals than Rangers score.

So Rangers 1 Hibs 0 and Celtic 5 Falkirk 1 would be enough...

I dont know how i lost my blogger but i had to re-register (maybe i put down my old work email address when i was signing up and whenever it closed i was given the elbow??)

But i see someone has jumped straight in and is masquerading around in here going by the name of danny, he doesnt even have the self respect to capitalise the 1st letter of his name!!

So i have had to come up with a new name, unfortunately (for Paul and thats just for a starter!) my opinions on just about everything havent changed!

For the 1st time in my life watching Celtic doesnt thrill the be jesus out of me, i still naturally get excited with the anticipation, but usually end up with a let down, with tactics or performances.

Now i know we have won most games, but it has never been thrilling or exciting stuff, bar the last few minutes, on several occasions! (which have been god damn thrilling!!) but over the course of the 90 minutes the perfomance will usually have been poor, for us to have been in the situation of needing a last minute goal.

Take for example last week. I said to the brother a thousand times before the game how the one thing for me personally, was to see John Kennedy playing in the flesh again, something i had given up on seeing some time ago. When i seen the team sheet on the screen, not only was he not starting but he wasnt on the bench!

The 1 up front just compounded that disappointment. At the time we assumed Kennedy would have to have been injured, but 1 up front, at home in the SPL against one of the 'lesser' teams, never in my life did i think i would live to see that day!

So please Gordon, we have won the league, just do the thing that us Celtic fans crave, ATTACK!
We have been brought up on a diet of both successful and non successful attacking football.

What will get the crowd roaring tomorrow, is attacking football. Do it, just to see what its like, please........

  • At 04/05/07 14:54, BigChipSuk said…

    Nope, I was wrong...

I just checked the Youth League table on the SPL website and if Rangers win 1-0 then:

4-0 to Celtic gives Rangers the title (same GD but Rangers will have scored a goal more)...

5-1 to Celtic will take it to a play-off (both will have scored 52 and conceded 25)...

6-2 to Celtic will give Celtic the title (same GD but Celtic will have scored a goal more).

    Any scores yet?

2-0 to Rangers already?! So we need to win 6-0 now to win it on GD.

I'll bet the wee Bhoys are kicking themselves for only beating Dunfermline 4-1 in their last league match (it was 4-0 at half time)... If they'd done as well in the second half as they did in the first, they'd have gone into today's game in pole position!

Much will be made of Celtic's under 19 loss of the league to Rangers.

Celtic's group of players almost to a man will be eligible to play at that level next season.

If we get one or two first team regulars graduating from youth level in ANY given year we will do well.

I remember someone from Bayern Munich stating that in a previous 7 yr period only two players ended up as first team players.

Collie al take dunfydave's consolation jibe every season at this time.

That's why I implied(or tried to) that a sore defeat might inspire the young Bhoys to make sure it never happened again. Aren't Caddis and Cawley members of last years squad?
And Cillian seems to have maintained a high level(a special bhoy, perhaps?) so the others have next year to demolish everyone with aplomb next year. A time to prove their worth?

Now wouldn't that be some learning curve!
you know how us Celts/Scots like to do it then hard way.

Bad result again today for the 19s, especially against such a poor Falkirk side. Most of which would never get anywhere near ANY Celtic squad.

Still if we can learn from disappointment then all is not wasted. Just gives the scouts / coaches a wee bit more work to do which won't do them any harm at all.

    bangkokbhoy,

The SNP has one more seat than Labour and is bigging it up as a great victory. However the chances are that neitther will be able to form a majority government and so things will be kind of interesting.

The others are 2 Greens and Margo MacDonald, ex SNP but now Independent.

Not followed the U19s that closely this season but it seems they can't handle pressure games. Pummled off Rangers in the final then losing a game we needed a big victory in is not a good sign - especially when the players are supposed to be picked based on mental as well as technical attributes.

    They are boys.

Where we are disappointed, they are hurting, doubting. Some will learn and improve. Some will look back on it in the future as their greatest chance, their greatest disappointment.

Others will be grateful for the opportunity, and find their solace in other successes.

Some will be good enough to make it professionally, but maybe not here. One or two will get to our first team and either stay or be asset managed.

To be 17 again with hopes expectations insecurities and spots?

We should give them only support, not the burden of our expectations and insecurities.

Well done the under 19's. There is time for you to learn, improve and make up to yourselves for the past week.

In the meantime, isn't it great to be playing for the CHAMPIONS?

I just got an offer of a ticket for tomorrow too. Maybe some of the mineshafters are getting fed up after all but this will be my first visit to Ibrox for many a long year.

What's the theme for tomorrow. Is it homage to Naka or Lennon? Beach Balls or Newspapers?

I'll cover all bases. I'll be the guy in a Kimono and ginger wig reading the Japan Times on a stripy deckchair.

    Thanks for the tip!

A friend of mine claimed that he turned up late for the birth of his first born. As he rushed to the delivery room, a helpful nurse handed him his gown with the immortal words, "It's a sterile environment in here, wash up and just put this on. 45 seconds later our bold hero enters the delivery room wearing "just" the gown which ties at the back, leaving exposed his hairy bum to the complete embarasment of his wife.

Probably an urban myth but I laughed anyway.

Once upon a time darkness fell across our land. An evil ruler known as Maggie manipulated her way to power. She experimented with the people of our lands preaching that her way was best. The good people of our land were misled by their own leaders who claimed that to beat Maggie we had to be like her. Soon she was replaced as leader and the time came when the leader of the good people, who was known as Tony, came to rule our lands. However Tony wanted to be so like Maggie that he led our people to a war against innocent people in a far away land. The good people were confused. However the leaders warned that to turn against Tony would allow Maggies cohorts to return to power. No one was brave enough to speak out and say that Tony had become just like Maggie. “Do you want a return to the days of darkness?”,they were asked as the people sought the light.
Do not judge your success by your enemy’s failure. Inverness Caledonian Thistle have taken 8 points from the Dark Side this season. Is this due to Gordon’s tactical nuance? Every season Martin won at Ibrox. We await your tactical genius Mr Strachan.

  • At 05/05/07 00:44, Celtic_First said…

Every season (so far) Gordon Strachan has done much more than win at Ibrox; he has won the league.

Jock Stein said a long time ago that Celtic fans ought not to focus on victories over Rangers. He said he would rather lose both (as was) games against Rangers and win the league.

    You know it makes sense.

  • At 05/05/07 02:37, The Great Auk said…

What is the origin of the word Ibrox? Sounds like an underware brand. Or some stain remover. Possibly from said underware. Any idea?

  • At 05/05/07 03:12, milkray said…

the word ibrox is a derivative of the word pox. It was unfotunatley a common disease widespread through europe in the 16th and 17th century.

the symptoms were extremly harsh, resulting in general ugliness coupled with a poor taste in birds and beer. Unfotunatley for these poor souls this was not their only misfortune.

They were also afflicted with the curse of cheap gold. Manisfeted mostly crulely in the form of the soverign ring and the neffitti(sic) pendant from ratners.

Alas it did not stop there these sad individuals had to create a past time between collecting the rent check and beating the wife( or common law goat)

    So was born the nightmare!!!

  • At 05/05/07 04:05, The Great Auk said…

I take it ye got that from the Poxford Dictionary.

  • At 05/05/07 04:37, 'Gavil Guy said…

This is definitely a very low key game. There seems to be complete indifference, and absolutely no build up or anticipation among Celtic fans.

    Rangers must be loving this.

The cardigan will have his team set up for agricultural tackles, body checking and Lennon baiting.
In other words a repeat of the tactics at Celtic Park. Bazza and Namouchi, with the collusion of the MITB will set out to intimidate Naka and McGeady.

A victory will provide momentum for next season and perhaps persuade Murray to open up the biscuit packet and sign Brown whatever the cost.

This must not be allowed to happen. We must go into the close season with the psychological advantage of not only being CHAMPIONS but also being confirmed as the runaway number 1 team in Scotland.

No advice to Mr Strachan as to whom he should field, but a plea that all those posted MIA in recent weeks turn up and play for the hoops.
There's no doubt the opposition will be doing just that.

I will as always HOPE for a comfortable and convincing victory, but I will settle for a single goal win from a scrappy Bazza OG in injury time.

'GG who needs to be up at 6am
