Beattie played huge role in Strachan’s Celtic

You would need a heart of stone not to appreciate what Craig Beattie has done for Celtic over the last two years.

When we were on the ropes in 2005 he was the man who stepped forward. Twice he came of the bench to score, an equaliser against Hibs, and the winner against Hearts, what at the time appeared to be crucial goals for Celtic.

His contribution at the start of Gordon Strachan’s reign was even more telling. Immediately after that game, with Celtic trailing 4-3 to Motherwell having squandered a two goal lead, it was substitute Beattie who brushed defenders aside to smack home the equaliser. History could have been very different if we lost that game.

He also came off the bench against Artmedia to score a fabulous header to put Celtic within touching distance of what would have been the greatest European comeback on record.

A famous, if not endearing, first touch, renders him less effective at build up play. Craig needs the ball played in front of him, where he can use his electric pace to outstrip any defender you care to mention before shooting (with his shin, knee or foot, they all seem to go the right way).

It is his fitness record, however, that has suppressed value. Time and again he has gained and then lost his place in the team as a result of injury. It is the right time for him to move on, and Tony Mowbray, who knows his abilities, is probably the right manager to join. Increased competition for a place up front at Celtic is only going to reduce his chances, and having made a successful breakthrough on the international scene, first team football is now a necessity.

The best of luck, Craig, if you move on, and many thanks for your key part in our recovery since 2005.

"appiah was a quality player we were interested in as he is a midfielder of top-drawer quality. But it looks like its not going to happen now"

talks in the past tense of out interest

"we have had no indication from anyone that he (naka) wants to leave this club. there is no get-out clause in his contract. end of story"

    that clears that up

    Well said.

Too often we dwell on the negative moments and the problems (for CB it was always his injury record) and then we forget good points.

It is nice you have highlighted these here

Craig had some lousy games for us but the one thing for me was that he never hid or shirked his responsibility even when nothing was working for him.

Beattie has always struck me as a good guy, committed to the team and has had a knack of getting a few goals when it really mattered. John Merrick may have had a better first touch but it mattered not.

However, I am glad to see that the clearout has started. If only Tommy Gravesen could be found a berth somewhere then I would be a darn site happier than I am at the moment. The one thing that I have found refreshing in recent years is that under Strachan we have seen players coming in before others have been moved on. Under MON and the 5 to midnight signings of Camara and the like (signing on fee: two private late-night openings of Symingtons every month and a year's free supply of Boot Brasso).

Craig Beattie is never going to be Thierry Henry, but if he can stay fit he will do West Brom a right good turn i feel.

The bhoy has goals in him, but it always seemed that it was just never going to work out for him at Celtic.

From the website of the CHAMPIONS -

In response to uninformed and mischievous press reports (read downright lies) during yesterday and today, Celtic can state categorically that there is absolutely no 'get-out clause' in Shunsuke Nakamura's contract. (are you reading this, laptop loyal?)

And just as Nakamura said a few weeks ago, Robert Takuda, Naka's actual representative, has spoken out.

Robert Takuda said: "I would like to stress that these reports about Naka are complete nonsense. Naka is currently preparing for the Asian Cup but straight after this, is very much looking forward to returning to Celtic. (once more, are you reading this, laptop loyal?)

"He and his family are very happy at Celtic and very happy in Glasgow. He has no reason to go anywhere else." (for the final time, are you reading this, laptop loyal?)

Various boldings above are mine, not from the website of the CHAMPIONS

I agree that TM is the right kind of manager for him,and hope his injuries clear up.

He'll always be the best thing to come out of Murray Park!

Also apologies for suggesting yesterday that Francesco Jeffers could be re-united with El Cardo without blowing the Budget at the Loyal Mint.It seems that Blackburn are seeking £1M for him, which would be a bit rich for these belt tightening times.Sorry..

RE: Beattie. Will be sorry to see him go, but yes now probably is the right time. I liked him, but injuries were damning for the lad. That seems to be a rather common ailment for our CFs Often injured. Worrying, but hopefuly our bad like with striker injuries will improve next season

  • At 27/06/07 12:49, malone_86_ said…

The injuries Beattie suffered are probably partly due to the pressure on players (especially young ones) at Celtic Park. Without having a spotlight constantly focused on his he should be able to relax a bit, not over-do things and stay injury free. The move may well save his career - and I'm talking physically not mentally.

I think that's because the other SPL teams try to kick us off the park, and too often condoned (by their indifferent inaction) by the referees at that. Its no wonder WGS thinks he needs a pool of a zillion Strikers, not to mention midfielders and defenders!

Good luck to Craig Beattie! I am sure he will flourish under Tony Mowbray and have less injuries not playing for Celtic in the SP-give-em-Hell.

Yes I agree, and this does justify Strachs pooling of talented strikers. BUT, the problem I see is that many of our Strikers (Beattie and JVOH in particular) were sustained of the pitch, in hamstring strains etc. That does casue me concern ocasionaly. But your point is true the physicality of the SPL can never help

So far and it is not end of June yet

4 players in and it looking distinctly possible that one player will leave very soon.

Suggested although not absolutely confirmed by Celtic the following transfer costs have been incurred

    Scott Brown 4.4m
    Massimo Donati 3.0m
    Scott McDonald 0.7m
    Chris Killen Free
    Paul Hartley (Jan window) 1.2m

If you want to factor in the £1m we got for Shaun Maloney at the end of January and what we might get from WBA for Craig Beattie then our net spend in the calender year is £7m

It is good business but it does suggest that we may have a lot more financial scope yet to undertake trnasfers before the window closes.

    Maceo Rigters update
    By Clydebuilt

    Wednesday 27th June 2007
Dutch newspaper tells of official approach by Celtic

    Article continues below

    QUOTE
Celtic makes an official bid for Rigters.
Because of his excellent play and gols in the under 21 EC tournament, Ritgers has come to the attention of several clubs. Today it has been announced that Celtic is officially the ONLY club to have requested to arrange a transfer to the Scottish league.
Ritgers has already stated that he REALLY wants to sign for Celtic where he will link up with fellow Dutchman JVOH.
The transfer sum will NOT represent a problem to Celtic so it seems the move is just a question of time

    Right Rev,

I am in agreement with you. We are in the market for another midfielder. I notice today that we might be in competition with Evertom from a midfielder from Scohaux or Chatereaux i think.

Been hearing names like Diaby and Song from Arsenal getting mentioned as well.

I am still clinging onto hope that Appiah may eventually sign. The ball is in his court. He knows our offer. Up to him. Although i feel he will probably will not sign we are going to go for another midfielder.

Who??? Only the sharp suited man will know that.

I for one hope he rejects the deal and stays at Celtic!

Apart from injuries Craig Beattie was unlucky to arrive in the team after the departure of Henrik and Sutton.

He kinda came to prominence when Magic started misfiring, was then paired with Kenny Miller when Magic got injured. If timing is indeed everything poor Craig could hardly have picked a worse time to demonstrate on too many occasions that he had the first touch of a chainsaw (read that on here).

No club can sustain a challenge for honours and rely on 3 dodgy strikers to score the goals. Good luck Craig, hope you are a smash hit success in England.

  • At 27/06/07 14:00, bambi said…

    Ross,

I find it hard to understand anyone who thinks Craig Beattie has what it takes to be a Celtic regular. His first touch is woeful, he is a trier of that there's no doubt but in my opinion he just isn't good enough.

His record is 16 goals for Celtic in I think 65 appearances. He has been in the first team pool for over 4 or 5 seasons and has played 65 games. 16 goals is not a good return for a striker and if Kenny Miller had a return like that we would be chasing him out the door. KM has scored half that amount in a season and we don't think he's good enough.

I know it's all about opinions but I just don't think Craig was ever good enough.

My immediate reaction was to think "Don't you mean GOLD socks?", but on reflection, I think you are absolutely right! Whilst a significant proportion of our supporters have a Catholic background (which if you are really Catholic does NOT mean anti-orange), and whilst Celtic FC was founded by Brother Walfrid (Any chance of him becoming 'Blessed' then Saint Walfrid?..), I think a green, white and orange strip would really make a statement in line with Celtic's (continuing) acceptance of players and staff regardless of their creed or colour.

...Dream on...Saint Walfirid and Orange socks... can you imagine the reaction THAT would get in Scotland?

This is the story I heard on TV recounted by one of the Lions, Bobby Lennox I think.

When we played Leeds in the EC semi final at Elland Road we went with one kit which included the traditional white socks. Leeds were in all white and the ref said that the socks would have to be changed. Celtic had no change and Leeds offered to supply the change, they had change kits with red or blue socks.

After much ado Big Jock said it would have to be red and tell everyone they were orange to fit with the tricolour theme and the fans would be happy, and tell them that if they looked red it was just the glare of the floodlights!

    So the story goes anyway.

Why Leeds didn't just change I don't know. They wore the red socks at Hampden I think.

It certainly looks like Drenthe will be going as Feyenoord have bought his replacement today. Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, a player I would have had in the hoops.

Good luck, Craig, and thanks. Without your indispensable contribution, our very recent history might have been very, very different.

Sky sports are also linking us with Nigerian striker Chinedu Ogbuke. Described as having a "Lethal Touch" infornt of goal. Sounds good. But then it also says Totenham and Arsenal are keen on the fella, so that one seems doubtful

Isn't it just marvellous, almost every class player coming available, we are being connected with. Everywhere it is clear that we once again are seen as a Top Club....man oh man I hope we can really put a show on in the CL this season and we will forever be on their lips..

"Scottish Giants Celtic of Glasgow produced a stunning performance last night in the Bernabeu to move into the quarter-finals......"

An achievable dream?? You bet !

    yeah the striker is "edu"

i was thinking about our transfer activity earlier at present the first team squad is

    boruc/brown

    lb - LN

    rb - MW

    cb - SP/DOD/JK/SMCM/GC/BB

    RW - SN

    CM - TG,JJ,PH,SB,MD,ES possibly TB

    LW - AMCG,DR

    ST - JVOH,CK,KM,SMCD,MZ

I still think the squads a bit imbalanced, as DR's position is open to interpritation

to me its clear full back and wide areas are where we need players, tho it could be said SB can cover on the right.

all in all we have to many central players and not enough natural players in the wide full back and winger berths

yet we are never linked with full backs or wide midfielders really?

of the above i expect JJ to go,possibly KM as well i don't see anyone else leaving i think TG will sit tight as will MZ.

Beattie is good business at that price but Paul67 i would argue beattie has not had a "huge role" i know u imply that means i have a heart of stone but a motherwell equaliser, a goal against a poor bratislava outfit and goals against hearts and hibs. i would reckon such few moments in 2 years could be found for any player nearly. KM,TG andJJ spring to mind as examples and they have been classed widely as failures

Sdstim - i watched a few of The Holland U-21 games recently & i thought that all the hype about 'Royston Drenthe' was a bit overboard to be honest. From what i seen he looked like a decent passer of the ball, but not really a player with a change of pace or a trick. I think that because the domestic season had finished & people were bored out of their skulls that this tournament received maximum exposure. Drenthe's Edgar Davids like dreadlocks may well have hoodwinked a few people into believing that young Royston has the same hair, so he must have the same ability. He also looks really accomplished on the ball - again this can be deceptive. Harry Kewell, Regi Blinker, Bodo Zenden, David Hannah all possessed the body language of the sophisticated footballer, but that soon changed when an opponent got within 5 yards of them.

I also tuned into Maceo Rigters & although he won the golden boot of that tournament, his play off the ball was pretty mediocre

Anyway what do I know - i had high hopes for Bobby Petta

I endorse evry word you say with regard to Craig. I always hoped he would be a success in the hoops and I think almost every Celtic supporter felt the same way.

I'm sure success would have come to pass but for the terrible luck Craig had with injuries. I felt that the lack of a 20 game run also adversely affected his touch. I always thougtht that he was very exciting when bearing down on goal with the ball and he often had me sitting on the edge of my seat.

Good luck Craig at WBA. Better luck on the fitness front and score a barrowload for Tony Mowbray. If you come back in the future, I hope it is to sign for us again and not to haunt us.

Collie - I tak yer point about Strikers running aff the baw no meaning a jot & it's all about hitting that net, However if you look at the best we've ever seen in Henrik, then that's a clue to what i'm trying to say. Henke & Cadete (who used to put the ball in the netty) were masters of movement & that's how they scored so many goals. Unlike Beattie & Miller, they were thinkers & knew how to find space on the park. I feel a bit sorry for Maciej Zurawski becasue i think that he has a football brain, but critically needs pacey options round about him. He too has a good scoring record.

To be fair I've not seen enough of young Maceo Rigters to completely dismiss him, however from what i seen I'm unsure whether he's any better than Naismith. Plus i have high hopes for Skippy MacDonald in that department. If there's anyone who can find the net then it's yer man from Down Under (Can't you hear, Can't you hear that Thunder?)

Even if there isn't much difference between Rigters and Naismith there's a certainly a difference in price - about £1.7m.

I agree with you though, McDonald should be a good player.

Its always a bit sad to see somebody that came thru the ranks no make it,ah suspect Craig will be a fine player with a run of games. He wisnae going to get that wae us.

On Beattie's recurring hamstring problems,we had a specialist( back in Terry Cassidy's time) working on specific stretching exersises to prevent hamstring pulls and that season am sure we only had two pulls. The guy left over some dispute with Cassidy.

Collie i agree that unless we get rid of Jarosik and Gravesen then there will be no wow signing.

Gravesen has to learn that the name on the front of the jersey is far more important than the one on the back. Seems incapable of following instruction.

VargasShampoo have to disagree with your assessmebt of Maceo's running off the ball,i thought it was excellent apart from a couple of offsides which you'll always get playing on the shoulder as he does.He looks a livewire, has a bit about him and can score goals.

Sorry if posted before - the second last para is quite interesting:

    http://www.rickyhitmanhatton.com/

The working class hero comes home by Trevor Newcombe

Ricky Hatton was greeted by an ecstatic throng of
fantical fans as he arrived back this morning from his
triumphant and rousing victory in Las Vegas . A tired
and emotional Hatton declared himself to be 'drained'
and 'extremely proud' of his dramatic victory against
    the legendary José Luis Castillo.

In the quiet and relative sanity of a Wythenshaw
hotel, Ricky Hatton gave the Manchester Evening News
his first exclusive interview since his victory in the
    United States .

Hatton was not surprised by the fact that he defeated
the highly rated Mexican, but was astounded by the
    nature of his win.

"I got him with a shot to the liver, which is a punch
you rarely see thrown nowadays. I had been watching
old videos going back as far as the twenties and
thirties even, What you notice is that in them days,
the fighters could throw a whole range of punches the
likes of which you don't see no more.
Guys like Kid Berg, Joe Louis etc. The 'bowler' punch
is something that I had never seen before, yet if
delivered properly it can be lethal".

As for the future, Hatton has a very clear schedule
and is aware that with his stunning victory, he is now
very much in the radar of the vast American viewing
    public.

"Pay-for-view is where it's at, and hopefully last
week will have shown the Americans that I am worth
watching. Financially it is a dream come true, and if
things go the way I plan, then I could secure my long
term future in the next few years".

Hatton reacted brusquely to suggestions that between
fights he indulges too much in the finer things of
life. He is notorious for loving a good fry up and the
odd pint of bitter when not preparing for a fight.

"Look, I've never hidden my liking for nice grub but
you saw me in Vegas, tell me who was fitter, Castillo
or me? As far as I know they don't have fry ups or
Boddingtons in Mexico ! What you have to remember is
that whenever I am asked to fight, I am in great
    shape".

Hatton then spoke about the relationship between
himself and Wayne Rooney, a fact that astonished many
observers given Hatton's frequently stated love for
    Manchester City .

"Wayne and me go back a long time, as he is from a
family of boxers. I fought his cousin David who boxed
for the Croxteth club and Wayne saw the fight, since
then he has followed my career with great interest. He
is a great lad and we don't have none of that stupid
hatred that you get between certain clubs. Wayne could
have actually been good at the boxing if he had chosen
to go that way instead of football."

Hatton was touched by the level of support that he
received in Las Vegas , among whom were Rio Ferdinand,
Joe Cole and Wes Browne. Did he see any blurring
between the sports of football and boxing?

"I have a lot of mates who are footballers, Robbie
(Fowler) and Joey )Barton) took me up to watch Rangers
as they are big fans, but to be honest I really didn't
enjoy the atmosphere at all. It might seem strange
coming from me ,but the atmosphere was aggressive
without being hard if that makes sense. I really
didn't understand them at all. I then went with Wayne
and Roy a few years back to watch Celtic and it was
magic. Their fans were passionate and supportive and
gave us a great welcome without getting in our faces
all the time. Celtic has a lot in common with City in
that they are the people's team of their city (sorry
Wayne !) and they haven't forgot their roots, a real
working class team which does credit to the city they
    represent".

The same may be said of Ricky Hatton a man who has
brought great distinction to his city without
compromising his background or his working class values.
