I remember that the Little Genital employed uber-fitness coach Bert van Lingen and that lot were lauded for their scientific approach at the time.
Proof of the pudding and all that...Let's see what difference it makes - and I reckon that this is very much taking the long term approach.

here here Paul
Nice to see the Daily Record trying to unsettle Boruc, again!!!!
his article is actually really positive but all they focus on is that he may yet leave
really poor show once again from the paper who cannot report positive celtic news and if there is any, they turn iy negative
Thank God for Celtic Quick News
Well Done Paul Shun

It's good to see a new guy joining us on this department.
Sports science is essential for the modern team. Together with the facilities at Lennoxtown it will really say something when we are trying to sign players that we mean business.

McGrain82, no problem with you posting a link or promoting your site. I appreciate the courtesy of being asked on the previous article.
Lennondinho, I am fortunate enough not to have read the article in question. You have to wonder why players speak to anyone.

Did our new scientist(!) apply for the position or was he head-hunted? It would be interesting to know what benefits his time at Lille brought to their first team and youths.
Heard on the radio that Brellier in signing talks with TFOD. A few CQNers previously expressed their desire to see him in the Hoops.

Does he know anything about critical velocity when flying thru the air after an Alan Hutton tackle ?
-
Shammy :- I'm very critical of the velocity divers fly through the air at after fair but hard tackles from Mr Hutton :-)
-
i think all this sports science adds to fitness which can never be bad, look at the way wenger had all this stuff in place years ago chelsea as well recently never look tired.
i think its also good for injury prevention as well
-
On the subject of Gregory Dupont, I was talking to an expert recently about this and I was told that critical velocity during continuous exercise in children has been studied here for years. The test determining peak oxygen uptake and maximal aerobic velocity has been identified as crucial to the modern youth.
The expert was a wee wummin in an Airdrie newsagent trying to catch shoplifters in the Town Centre for the last 4 years.
"I'll gie them maximum velocity", she said, "right up the Monklands and believe you me, they'll be crtitical all right. Aerobics you say? Mare like a contortionist tae remove thur head fae thur erse, that's whit thul need"
And to be honest, there's no arguing with experience like that.
-
Hi Paul
It is great to see Celtic moving forward in this professional manner.
I think all the building blocks are now in place, for the new era at Lennoxtown.
As with everything, though, there is always the human factor, and I believe that last year not all the players bought into the new training regime, some sticking to their own preferred practises. So hopefully, this year, some education and persuasion will be implemented.
To all of us old timers, the McGeady debate is nothing new, I remember my mates slagging off Big Yogi, my personal favourite at the time, saying we should ditch him, but when he turned it on, it was a joy to behold, I think the same applies to Aiden.
Cut the guy a bit of slack, he'll reward you for it.
PS. Paul got the new Blogg bookmarked, ready to go.
-
Paul
Is the fitness coach the guy from Aussie Rules Football?
So we now have the appliance of science coupled with the legitimised thuggery of ARF. Personally I think only Bobo could cut it for Collingwood.
-
Aul' haun heaven.
Celtic back on top for the forseeable future.
And beer at the games (for everybody, not just the free pie munchers in the dear seats).
I've never seen a prawn sandwich at Celtic Park in my puff. Stupid way to eat prawns anyway, in a sandwich.
I suppose it's too much to expect to be allowed to bring in a cairry oot. But maybe they could reintroduce beer cans wi' pictures of ladies on the side.
And men as well, of course. On different cans. Colour coded, so you don't pick up the wrong kind by mistake.
-
steelica
Are you over in that part of the world? I found the Aussie rules had an unfair rap. The length of bans for striking an opponent had pretty much wiped out any real fighting, they just seemd to grab each other's jerseys a lot. Certainly less violent than either code of rugby played over here.
The fitness levels are pretty incredible. The round pitch is enormous (usually doubles as a cricket pitch) and these guy get up and down constantly. Lots of stops in play must help I suppose.
They're real men right enough, I remember one guy geting injured and the sports reporter telling us that it had been confirmed as a ruptured cruciate ligament, he'd be out for 4 weeks!
-
Paul,
The sports science angle is not a new one to Celtic. We were ahead of rangers in that regard and the fitness and research suite within the ground is testament to that. Sports Science graduates were already in the employ of Celtic fc to run this and Glasgow Uni's Dept; of Sports Science were consultants on the equipment and techniques used with a 2 way benefit. We got graduates and trainees on placement. They got to carry out assessments and research on elite athletes and young players developing. We benefited from their advice arising from that research.
The appointment of the french guy to head this up is, I'm sure, the result of an appreciation of the return we get on that investment. What it can't and won't do is stop injuries though it should assist in reducing them and aiding recovery times.
I know we felt we had a horrendous injury list last year, because we missed the players involved, but without published figures from all clubs, I would not know if ours is out of kilter with the norm. It seems to me that all club managers are complaining of injury lists nowadays. Maybe it is the influence of the Sports Science research which is stopping desperate managers and coaches from rushing back players from injuries. We cannot afford the Alan McGraw attitude of taking injections to dull pain and disguise damage. We admired big Johann who seemed prepared to play through injury but I hope these were minor niggles and not some injury which will debilitate his later life. We would not want the Celtic of 2030 to be facing a legal bill from Sweden for talking a player into damaging his health long term.
What we do not have, in contrast to a nearby club, is a record of signing injury crocked players or failing to sign perfectly sound ones. I feel proud that our club continues to endorse a Sports Science approach and does not use a water divining rod to diagnose fluid on the knee. Or allow a player to depend on prayer to protect his cruciate.
-
Critical velocity eh?
The media better not ask WGS for a quick word again, then.
-
old tim
From the last thread. I don't see much disagreement here. We both want Aiden to continue improving at Celtic and we both acknowledge he had a poor end to the season, as did the team.
What I will repeat is that it is OK to compare Jimmy and Aiden's situation, but it would be ridiculous to equate them, unless the formula was Jinky = 3 times Aiden. Even then, Aiden is doing better out of that comparison than 99.9% of the players who have worn the hoops.
-
Re the Darnel Findlay case,
Now I hold no brief for this guy (NO SHOCKS THERE THEN) but do other Tims think this tribunal malarkey is way over the top.
The two jokers who grassed him up are well known uber catholics who give us, the sinning majority, a bad name IMO.

STBF, some interesting comments there.

alot of the things are also aimed at prolonging careers, which i am not sure directly benefits celtic unless every player becomes a neil lennon!
-
This is an interesting development. Football clubs are always looking for something (or someone more often than not) to give them a competitive edge. Many managers of clubs excel in a particular aspect of the job, eg Martin was a motivator, Gordon's strength is in preparation and coaching, Sam Allardyce used sports science, others are good in the transfer market, developing youth etc etc.
Under Gordon Strachan Celtic seemed to have clicked to the fact that running the first team is very much a team effort. Celtic now have specialists in place in many of the key areas of putting a team on the park. I suspect a lot of this modern thinking has come from Gordon Strachan. He must take confidence from the fact that the board are prepared to back his judgement.

Makaay is expected to leave Bayern, if a deal for Klose is completed, but he currently knows nothing about his future.
He told AD Sportwereld: "Until now nothing has been reported to me about a transfer or about interest from wherever"

Paul67.
If it reverses the spate of injuries we incurred last season I'm all for the change.Gregory Dupont the Head of Sports Science at Celtic Park will be a good addition to the staff at Celtic Park
-
Hi Paul,
Where would you see Mr Dupont having the biggest effect, in overall fitness and stamina leading to a team that is fresher both at the end of games and towards the end of the season or do you think he will be more effective in cutting the injury list that seems to grow every season and the injuries that seem to last longer every season? I know neither are an exclusive Celtic problem but seem to be happening more and more in all teams.
-
i think certain players need it more, look at for example naka and lampard, consistently play and cover big distances yet rarely injured.
on a different note, does anyone else find the way a "sampdoria spokesman" gives running commentary on delvecchio's possible transfer as a little unusual.
-
I was always of the impression that Sports Science was all about getting that extra 5-10% fitness out the player - monitoring fitness and assessing the ways to improve it. I can't see it preventing injuries (on-field anyway).
-
Paul 67
You missed his study of:
Predicting Sprint Kinematic Parameters from Anaerobic Field Tests in Physical Education Students.
Had he been here last season he may have been able to adjust Beattie's sprint posture and reduced the number of pulled hamstrings the laddie seems to be cursed by.

Ah, Sweetheart Stout. For stout sweethearts, of course.
The fitter and better conditioned they are, the less prone they should be to stress or strain injuries, surely?
Players that is, not sweethearts. Them too right enough.

not too unrealistic (is it? you bet it is, but thats the english money market)

Edward, I really don’t know where he will benefit us, though we can hope for fitter, more agile players.

excellent news, the scientific approach to sport really is the way forward. A young scottish lad recently did the hardest rock climb in the world on Dumbarton Rock, he has a doctorate from Glasgow Uni's sports science department and his achievements speak for themselves. Perhaps Celtic should get this guy involved for motivational work, talks etc? he is very inspiring.

just looking at season stats there thinking about the stick mcgeady has taken
mcgeady had the second highest assists, 12 in 31 starts with15 sub appearances, tho maloney had 7 assists in just 10 starts and 5 sub appearances. naka was top with 25 assists in 49 games plus 1 as sub
so mcgeady has not been all that bad tho 5 goals could of been better
-
Science is bunk, ask any scientist.
-
Maloney (in the SPL anyway) was much more effective than both McGeady and Nakamura in terms of overall contribution but he's gone so we really can't comapare them with him.

12.51 TTTT am enjoying the break from Snyde's negativity.
Michael Colllins @ 21.43 last night
"I like Aiden" you sure ? What do you like about him?
Have to disagree with your assessment of Aidens merit/abilty/strength/end product/composure/pace.
It comes down to perception you see his mistakes i see his contributions.
Maybe i missed something how manty wide players have we been linked with, and if we do sign one tthen i see it as cover not an affirmation of your opinion that Gordon Strachan does not see Aiden as an effective wide man.
When i said i believed Aiden should play inside i did not mean centrally, more of an inside forward.
Aiden will flourish with pace and movement around him,he is composed can see a pass can beat a man can score goals,a first team player all day long.
Disagreement thats life in the big city.
With thanks to Noel pictures paint a thousand words.
Contribution trumps mistakes
-
Does anyone know when the Aussie Rules Fitness Coach commenced?
Did it coincide with our slump in form? Was the new training regime too strenuous?
Or are we going to see the impact of a thorough pre-season in July, August and Sept?
-
Think Greg will be a good addition. Seems quite high profile. Maybe he will keep big JVOH off the injury list by sports sciencing him.
With all these stories of who were signing and who were selling, whats the truth? I hate all the tabloid hun newspapers. I think there would be a lot of money to be made making a "truthfull" tabloid which is not biased. Then again, who wants to know the truth...
-
I don't know if anyone is watching it but on freeview %U.S is showing a not bad MLS game between Dallas and Chicago. It's a bit hard to judge the standard but I would say that in passing and off the ball movement it's well ahead of the SPL, maybe worth a watch when the lack of football start to bite.
-
That should be 5 U.S
-
Winningemmell, they got rid of the medicine ball after Phil O’Donnell.
Jimbatt1888, “truth” is, there is no real transfer ‘news’ at the moment. Football coverage is currently dedicated to earning advertising cash by publishing any old tat.
I make a point of never clicking on a headline that suggests Celtic are after someone or a Celtic player is leaving, and I especially hate “Celtic chase £5m midfielder” headlines, which withhold the name of the player in an attempt to lure you in.
-
Edward - watching the MLS game - just saw the Chicago goal. Yes great movement and good to watch but the defending was shocking....was that not Bert Konterman at Centrehalf ? :-)

I can confirm some rumours about possible Artur move. I've heard he is going to Izolator Boguchwała this summer.
By the way, I'm also ready to play for a big club.

Are they a very big club?

IV Polish League, but yes they are a big club.

Zbyszek,
Izolator Boguchwała are the only club I've ever wanted to play for.

Seriously speaking nothing new in the info about "possible" Artur move. First part of the articles is true. He feels very well with Celtic and hopes to achieve more in the Champions League. Second part about a move was added by the "journalists". First part was taken from the interviews Artur gave about six weeks ago and two weeks ago (to the Polish press).
As you see that was on contrary to my info I sent at 20:25. First part of it is false, second is true:)
-
Zbyszek
Is this the same Izolator Boguchwała that are in for Ronaldinho and Kaká?
If Artur goes, will you still come on here and talk to us?
-
Dick Byrne
So, aren't they a big club? Yes they are.
They are one of not many Polish clubs well known in Scotland. What I say? Scotland? People from another sides of the oceans know them too.

Good joke. You are quite right that Artur's quote gives no indication of any move in the immediate future.
I'm sure you could pass Ranger's stringent fitness test as it seems to consist of tossing a coin.

EDB - didn't get a chance to reply last night but good to hear that Aidan sees a future for himself at Celtic and plans to make a name for himself. He is ceratinly wanted.
TerryO'Neill - Totally agree with your assertion. Aidan's contribution is immense and will be proven to be the case. Once the team plays with faster players both beside and in front of Aidan the difference will be far noticeable. He is a class above others.
I refer back to Noel's posting at 19.05 last night. If we were linked with a player who was doing those sort of things with a football, we would be frothing at the mouth. Enjoy what we have! You will miss it when its gone.

A lot of good and bad comments about Aiden over the last few days. We definately expect too much from him at this stage and I cringe when I hear some of the bile being vented at him during home games.
Certainly next season is a massive one for him, but how do we know that WGS is planning on sticking with the same formation? With the new midfield we are all expecting, might it be a case of Aiden OR Naka in the first team?
Our ninja might be a bit jaded at the start of next season, allowing Aiden to run up a sequence of games. Who will start when we get round to the CL qualifier?
I would like to see Evander and Teddy (not Ursus!) stake their claims next season. SB and at least one other big buy will be definate starters, so does WGS stick with the two wide flair players or play just one behind the two strikers?
Hmmm....great innit?!

TerryO'Neill @ 19:01
I take it your saying that celtic are looking at a 3 million pound winger from AC Milan as cover for Aiden. Interesting point of view.
I would love it if you could tell me what formation we could play to accomodate Aiden as an 'inside forward'. Are you talking about playing Aiden as a second striker. I sincerely hope not.
If you dont play Aiden wide mid the that only leaves two spots in central midfield to fill( assuming 4-4-2 WGS's preferred formation). If we reckon Scott Brown has not been bought for 4 million to warm the bench then Aiden would have to play alongside him. This midfield ,in my opinion is not one that any team would be nervous about.
What i think we lacked last year was two mobile midfielders who can get up and down the park , contribute in their own box and be creative in the final third. Do you really think Aiden ticks these boxes. I suspect a midfield of Brown and Sno(2 years younger than Aiden) would be a better bet. Also we are looking to bring in another central midfielder , Delvechio, Koumas etc not to mention TG or JJ so where would that leave Aiden. On the bench I suspect and thats why I fear for his future at celtic. His first team appearances will be limited next year.
You asked what I like about Aiden. I like his skill, his flicks and tricks as much as the next man and ,particularly because of the abuse he takes for playing for Ireland , nothing would please me more than to see him become a top class player with Celtic. As such I would have no inclination for Celtic to sell him but another season in and out of the team I feel is inevitable and I believe this would not be good enough for Aiden.
Feel a bit like the pantomime villain here( oh no I dont) but its only my opinion. The most important thing is that Celtic win the league again.
-
Michael Collins
With the new personell in over the summer I think we might see Strachan mixing it up a bit formation-wise. Formations such as 4-3-3|4-2-3-1|4-1-3-2 will all be available and with the players we have (and the ones I hope we will have) we should be able to change formations mid-game.

antsman - If we really are bringing in another quality central midfielder, e.g. one of the Italians or Appiah, do you think that Hartley will be a first choice?
I think Malone is right, in that we may vary our formation depending on the opposition. Nothing wrong with that, Wim used that effectively in his season at the club.
As long as you have the players with the football intelligence & discipline to cope with the demands. (Cheerio TG!)
I would rather play Aiden than Naka away to Inverness, the same might go for Paul Hartley who would probably be on the bench for the CL games.
It's not quite the two seperate team approach that AC Milan used to employ, but the main thing is the flexibility.

Me and little HamptonTim have been conducting an in depth analysis of Celtic signing targets using his FIFA 2007 PS2 Game.
Little HamptonTim always gets to be Celtic (thats OK as he's better than me and usually wins).
The results of our analysis (based on games versus the likes of AC Milan, Inter and Lyon) are a big thumbs up for Frei and Donati - but a 'maybes aye maybes naw' for Delvecchio.
Interestingly, the PS2 experiment also seems to clearly indicate that of our existing bunch of players, Kennedy and Balde are the best defenders, Sno and Nakamura are the best midfielders, while Riordan is the best striker.
So, there coudl be something in this as a methodology - maybe I should offer our services to join the Celtic backroom staff as "PS2 analyst" or something along those lines.
Does anybody else try stuff like this to while away the summer days?

Michael Collins ,
Stop reading the rags , Donati is not a winger. He is a central midfielder who can play left if needed.
McGeady will shine when he gets players on the same wavelengh , not static footballers who look the other way when he has the ball.
Next season we will see a new shape to the team. 4-3-3 will be played at stages at home in the SPL. You bet McGeady will thrive with this formation.
We will see Nakamura at the point of a Diamond formation in Midfield , giving him freedom to express himself with a far mobile midfield working in tandem with him . When Nakamura is ineffective and we need a spark McGeady can take his position.
Imagine taking the shackles off these players?
I cant wait to the new season.
