Donati arrives in Glasgow

Massimo Donati touched down at Glasgow Airport this afternoon on his way to Celtic Park before completing a medical and formally becoming a Celtic player.

Through his interpreter he said, “Celtic are a big club.

“I want to do my best for the team. I am really looking forward becoming a Celtic player”

Living outside Italy for the first time will be a big challenge for the 26-year-old, who, in conversations with the Italian media last week, cited Champions League football as the reason he chose to come to Celtic. We tend to get hung-up on the relative attraction of the SPL in Scotland, though the league compares very favourably with any other from a country of similar size, but Champions League football seems to compensate.

Welcome to over lovely country Massimo, ignore the weather, it seldom rains.

Welcome Massimo. I for one an excited by this signing, judging by the reports of those who know his abilities. His football ability is in no doubt but the more crucial test might be his ability to adapt to 'the Scottish game'. While that is something which might have worried me before, Naka has shown - in spades - that talented midfielders from Serie A CAN adapt and impress their skills on the SPL. I think there's no co-incidence that our manager spent a good deal of his whole career dealing with the same problem - and overcoming it concincingly. I can't be the only one who sees his experience and advice as crucial to the way Naka has developed? Let's hope Massimo does the same.

Seldom has there been a player in this multi-media age that I have not so much as seen a glimpse of. No youtubes or nothing. I would be grateful of any footage that anyone (Noel90 shoorly?)has of the lad.

Anyroads it's always exciting when we get a new player and I look forward to seeing him in the Hoops. I can only wonder what dimension such a Serie A regular will bring to our team. I hope he will bring some composure in European games. If there is one consistent trait of Italian midfielders, it is in their ability to kill the games to snail pace when it suits them.

Also, I tagged this onto towards the end of the mammoth comments list of the last post but there is a new article up here if anyone wants to have a look in an idle moment. Principally concerning the new Chief Exec at the S.F.A. and what it means for Celtic. As ever Paul, thanks for the courtesy.

Sorry I got called away while replying and I replied in haste.

The whole point of my post is not what I did in the game or what my opinion is.

Rather the point is what our manager did in the game and what his opinion is.

His knowledge and education far outstrips mine.

Secondly, something I alluded to on here before.
Careful what you wish for, it might come true.

    Thirdly.

The written word can be unforgiving in many forms.

    Maleys Bhoy

I am a season ticket holder and I saw every single game last season. On Setanta. I live in Australia but with a bit of luck I will finish the job I am working on and make at least a couple of games come October.

I agree debate is all this is. But debate can fuel a lot of emotions and once the mob get their back up who knows how it can influence and where it can lead.

PLG at Rangers as a case in point

    FIAGOTTPF

I had Mick McManus along with O’Dea and JFK in mind at all times (not forgetting young Cuthbert and Ferry) but I think they all have a ways to go before I would view them as intimidating. I think they all have the ability to make it at Celtic

    "jetting in"?

Haven't you been reading the press lately?

People fly in -- only Martin B and David M "jet" in , usually to complete a "swoop" for player , having already browbeaten the selling club , by telling them that DM (armed with his "warchest") will not be "held to ransom" and having given the sellers a "take it or leave it ultimatum".

Or I have I just being reading the Daily Record too much?

Kitalba - very entertaining post at the end of the last thread - thanks.

The point I would make regarding the comparisons you drew between our current batch of 'hard' men (Bobo, Pressley, TG) and those from the Stein and McNeil era's is that the current batch although providing a formidable opponent fall somewhat short in comparison of their footballing abilities.

Nevertheless, a great post and worth a read for everyone who missed it.

Am really looking forward to seeing this lad - Brown I'm sure is going to be a good signing but doesn't excite in the same way as Donati or perhaps Ritgers would do.

Agree with whoever said that the quality / age / price of players we are being linked with is right on the button.

If Ritgers signs I'd be happy with 1 defender more. But if KM/TG/CB move on then I'd put it all on an experienced centre half - good as the many we have are - its a position that could be improved.

Is the CL draw tomorrow? Or is that just for the rabble?

Also I noticed that what looked like a car park at Lennoxtown suddenly went green - astroturf right? (rather than eye failure). Paul - any news on naming for Lennoxtown - and does anyone know if the castle came with the land?

We're being linked with more players today. Danny Shitu from Watford, 2 mill alegedly. He has physical presence alright, focused largely around his waist. Rigters, obviously. And then theres some midfield guy from Schoux described as a "Neil Lennon replacement". No wide players tho, which is annoying, like to see a new winger in.

  • At 28/06/07 15:24, Len Brennan said…

I think on the naming of the training facility there can be only two options. The man who founded the club, so the Walfrid training ground.
And the man who saved the club when it looked like we were going out of business, so we get the McCann training ground.

I think as we already have the two stands at PH named after Mr Stein and the Lisbon Lions it may possibly of rule them out of being in the running, but their achievement should never be discounted, so maybe not.

Anyway I'm glad it's not me who is making the decission as you'll always have people saying it should have been someone else so good luck to them who have the final say so.

Unconfirmed reports emerged last night that Moonbeams Minty has made an offer to buy the resort of Tabloi’ Cliché in the French Dordoigne . Minty, the garrulous and gregarious owner of Moonbeams Minty Enterprises, decided to purchase the resort after hearing that they were impressed by phraseology such as ‘jetting in’, ‘on standby’ and ‘succulent lamb’. Minty has proposed to pay the fee over four (or possibly forty) years, spread across two provident loans, a tap, a cash advance on a Capital One card, and 4000 powercards of questionable origin.

Minty, who was accompanied on his visit by his batman, Baldy Bain, regaled locals with big lies and further big lies as he laid out his dubious blue print which included such things as a Blue Cheer Box Set from the 70s made into a house and a floating porcine pen in the sky. As he cast an expressive arm over the beautiful countryside Moonbeams said, “God willing gents, we will turn this into a casino.” One local urchin asked Moonbeams if he could tame a wild beast in his garden. “Baldy my man, get me horse-whispering bugle.” With that Moonbeams played a lilting tune that impressed all who heard it. The bold stallion was thus tamed and noble. He then turned to the ragged urchin and gave him a signed picture of Seam Canary punching a woman. The little boy’s face lit up at the generosity. Such is the love that comes to Moonbeams.

Minty then turned his attention to the other reason for his visit: The Moonbeam MintyWoolFrame. Minty has been pursuing the acquisition of the woolframe for several years after the last one was found to be wearing thin. Minty’s untold generosity is such that he has ordered the woolframe that should keep everyone’s eyes protected from reality. Said Moonbeams, tearfully, “I do it for love and that is all. Season tickets are up a ton”.

In other news, Rangers are up to their eyebaws in debt and have nae chance.

I am often amused and more frequently bemused by many of the comments I read on the Lions. I can only believe that many speak having heard of the team and players but not actually watched them in their prime. The Celtic of the second half of the sixties was as fine a footballing side as I have had the privilege to watch but they were no shrinking violets, well with one possible exception.

Big yogi would batter people in the same way as Hartson i.e. almost accidental, I am just a foot taller and several stone heavier kind of way. Stevie Chalmers drew plenty of blood and must have left many a broken nose among the centre half fraternity. Bertie was a sneaky wee gnaf a la Johny Giles. Jinky took some punishment occasionally loosing it and giving it back. Tommy Gemmel on occasion chased players around the park with the obvious intent of putting them in row z. He succeeded on occasion. Even Celtic TV’s own dentist Jim Craig was not above giving an opponent a “right welly” to use his own words. One such wellying administered at Hampden would put him in Bar L today but only got him a telling off.

Kitalba mentions John Clarke. I never considered John a dirty or hard player per see but he was not shy about committing a professional foul when the situation demanded. No bookings in those days never mind a sending off for stopping a goal scoring opportunity. Clarke must be the most underrated player in the history of the club and the perfect foil for Billy McNeill.

That brings me to the exception. Billy, the biggest man in the team, was a big Jessie or putting it nicely he was a gentleman! He did not even commit professional fouls something, for which I once roundly abused him. On a big European night the opposition centre forward turned Billy and ran thirty or forty yards with Billy in tow. A wee tug on the jersey and history might have been different. No tug, the ball was put in the net and we went out one nil on aggregate!

The Lions played in a different era when the tackling appeared brutal by comparison with today. The were able to give it and take it and play football in top with the one exception. The third match in the World Club Championships.

I agree with all that Kitalba wrote and would add that if you listen closely Gordon Strachan does explain more often than any other manager I know off why he picked the team on a particular day, why he made the changes he did and what he looks for in players both on and of the field. You may not agree with his rational but he does make it plain.

Feyenoord signs Netherlands striker Roy Makaay from Bayern Munich on three-year deal
    Posted: Thursday Jun 28, 2007 8:07 AM

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -Roy Makaay moved to Feyenoord from Bayern Munich on a three-year contract on Thursday.

The 31-year-old Makaay led Bayern with 16 goals last season, but decided to leave after it brought in Italy striker Luca Toni and Germany forward Miroslav Klose.

Makaay, who won Europe's golden boot award for most goals in 2002-03 with 29 at Deportivo La Coruna, has also scored six goals in 43 appearances for the Netherlands.

Feyenoord coach Bert van Marwijk has bought a number of players since being appointed earlier this month.

He signed defender Kevin Hofland from Wfl Wolfsburg on a four-year deal on Thursday, defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst from FC Barcelona on Wednesday, and Netherlands defender Tim de Cler from AZ Alkmaar last week.

Last year, Feyenoord had the second worse defensive record in the league, conceding 66 goals.

Feyenoord, one of the three traditional powerhouses of Dutch soccer with Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, finished seventh in the Dutch league and missed out on a place in Europe next season

    Thanks to Barassiebhoy for this..

If you're not a boxing fan, be patient!

The working class hero comes home by Trevor Newcombe

Ricky Hatton was greeted by an ecstatic throng of
fantical fans as he arrived back this morning from his
triumphant and rousing victory in Las Vegas . A tired
and emotional Hatton declared himself to be 'drained'
and 'extremely proud' of his dramatic victory against
    the legendary José Luis Castillo.

In the quiet and relative sanity of a Wythenshaw
hotel, Ricky Hatton gave the Manchester Evening News
his first exclusive interview since his victory in the
    United States .

Hatton was not surprised by the fact that he defeated
the highly rated Mexican, but was astounded by the
    nature of his win.

"I got him with a shot to the liver, which is a punch
you rarely see thrown nowadays. I had been watching
old videos going back as far as the twenties and
thirties even, What you notice is that in them days,
the fighters could throw a whole range of punches the
likes of which you don't see no more.
Guys like Kid Berg, Joe Louis etc. The 'bowler' punch
is something that I had never seen before, yet if
delivered properly it can be lethal".

As for the future, Hatton has a very clear schedule
and is aware that with his stunning victory, he is now
very much in the radar of the vast American viewing
    public.

"Pay-for-view is where it's at, and hopefully last
week will have shown the Americans that I am worth
watching. Financially it is a dream come true, and if
things go the way I plan, then I could secure my long
term future in the next few years".

Hatton reacted brusquely to suggestions that between
fights he indulges too much in the finer things of
life. He is notorious for loving a good fry up and the
odd pint of bitter when not preparing for a fight.

"Look, I've never hidden my liking for nice grub but
you saw me in Vegas, tell me who was fitter, Castillo
or me? As far as I know they don't have fry ups or
Boddingtons in Mexico ! What you have to remember is
that whenever I am asked to fight, I am in great
    shape".

Hatton then spoke about the relationship between
himself and Wayne Rooney, a fact that astonished many
observers given Hatton's frequently stated love for
    Manchester City .

"Wayne and me go back a long time, as he is from a
family of boxers. I fought his cousin David who boxed
for the Croxteth club and Wayne saw the fight, since
then he has followed my career with great interest. He
is a great lad and we don't have none of that stupid
hatred that you get between certain clubs. Wayne could
have actually been good at the boxing if he had chosen
to go that way instead of football."

Hatton was touched by the level of support that he
received in Las Vegas , among whom were Rio Ferdinand,
Joe Cole and Wes Browne. Did he see any blurring
between the sports of football and boxing?

"I have a lot of mates who are footballers, Robbie
(Fowler) and Joey )Barton) took me up to watch Rangers
as they are big fans, but to be honest I really didn't
enjoy the atmosphere at all. It might seem strange
coming from me ,but the atmosphere was aggressive
without being hard if that makes sense. I really
didn't understand them at all. I then went with Wayne
and Roy a few years back to watch Celtic and it was
magic. Their fans were passionate and supportive and
gave us a great welcome without getting in our faces
all the time. Celtic has a lot in common with City in
that they are the people's team of their city (sorry
Wayne !) and they haven't forgot their roots, a real
working class team which does credit to the city they
    represent".

The same may be said of Ricky Hatton a man who has
brought great distinction to his city without
compromising his background or his working class values

31003 - Walfrid Fields was my cunning plan to merge the origins with the current....thankfully its not my full time job to do this.

I suggest the following, he goes along to the bank lifts his first weeks wage in £10 pound notes.

Home to his hotel room and proceeds to count them one by one.

When his arms get sore i think he'll be feeling ok about his move.

From the last thread i enjoyed GG's post 4.37 about the Scottish media.

Recently i read some of Andrew Jennings stuff as alluded to by Aw Naw No Annoni and Estadio and that in turn led me to a site called Play the Game.Al get there bear with me.

Play the game has the results of a survey carried out by 14 research units in 10 countries the subject International sports press,it makes for interesting reading.

    Snippet=

    The Norwegian media
researcher Gerd von der Lippe from the College of
Telemarken puts it like this: “Sports journalism is different
from virtually all other fields of reporting in that
the jounalist follows the athlete so intensely, for long
periods of time. The critical sense is eroded. You become
friends with the athlete, camp and travel with the
person and become in effect a great fan of their success.
    The relationship easily becomes non-professional.”

Put you in mind of anyone ?

Also in the last thread Hanif Uno Dahistri 11.29 have to disagree with your assessment "the idea that there's a grand conspiracy to hoodwink Celtic fans and talk up the dirty dozen is in Fact a fallacy"

Maybe their is no "grand conspiracy" but please answer me this- imagine for a moment that everything curently taking place had one difference- Celtic's current circumstance was enjoyed by rangers and their current circumstance was experienced by us.

The question would it be reported in the same manner ?

I dont believe for a nanosecond that it would.

    Drogheda @15.30,

I agree with the tenor of what you say as regards the Lisbon Lions. I would use the word "cute" to describe the type of foul you thought our Captain should have used that night. The Continentals had us beaten all ways up at those sort of things. If that foul had been made, we might have gone on to dominate Europe for a generation.

Mind you, never thought of Big Yogi as a dirty player. He just "did" and sometimes it came off and sometimes it didn't. He certainly never seemed to be premeditated about anything. To me, if anyone needed sorting out, wee Bertie did the needful, a la Johnny Giles.

    Hey T O'N

I agree, I think the print media is tangibly more biased against Celtic than Them. They should be having more of a go at Murray and the fact that the huns are broke seems to be treated with a certain amount of puzzlement ( is that a word ? ) rather than criticism.

But i do feel that we're often over sensitive to a bit of criticism in the press and there IS a perception that there is a coordinated effort in the press to attack Celtic at every opportunity. There isn't. Celtic get good press, bad press, neutral press. Some of the press are more susceptible to David Murray's steak than others, but I bet they feel a bit daft these days.

And as for misreported transfers, rumours and speculation - I don't understand how fans can get on their high horse about this...I love speculation, rumour and gossip. And I don't think it's motivated by a desire to destablise Celtic.

Although, I'll admit, occasionally there'll be a story on the eve of a big Celtic V huns game and it'll make even ol' Hanif suspicious....

  • At 28/06/07 17:38, TerryO'Neill said…

Hanif thanks for your reply as i said the survey of the sports press thats featured on the Play the Game site gives a lot of sound reasons for the behaviour of sports journalists, advertising revenue has a big impact on how sport is reported.

Is it any wonder that we are over sensitive at times,i do not believe that the majority of reporters at the Sun ,Daily Record are even handed, bias plays its part.

Yes maybe the sport itself doesn't have the best reputation due to the gangsters that deal in it but Ricky is one of the good guys.

If you happened to watch the build up to his fight at the weekend you would have seen that he was just like us.
Considering he's a boxer probably too much like us!!!

Ricky has always said what he thinks and i for one welcomed his comments about our team and theirs!

On another note i don't know much about the guy but the press don't know much either if their back pages are anything to go by!!

It really annoys me too but let's just watch our team ram it down the press's throat this season and win the league by a convincing margin for the 3rd time in 4 years.
The longer they go on reporting that all is well at Mordor, the more people will believe it. The day of reckoning WILL come.

We cannot change the philosophy of the press of their slant on things. We should just carry on being the best supporters in the world and backing our team in triumph and in adversity.

There will be many comings and goings in the playing staff over the next 2 months and we are going to see a successful, fast and exciting team on the park next season.

unfortunately he's now established himself in the 1st team so he'll probably cost too much.

A centre half. the right age. played in the later stages of the CL and he's a big tim as well!!

i'll never forget his press conference when signing for liverpool when asked on his favourite club.

he stunned the room by talking about celtic as the team he has always supported.

He'd be the one for me.

More than a passing resemblance to Christian Ronaldo in the new signing. I hope the good looker is not swept away with the ghirls in Glasgow! he's no relation to the three amigos is he? Oh and he plays a shade like the portuguese player too.
I´m still lighting a candle for the erstwhile Thomas Gravesen to get a chance next season. A bit of muscle and experience is no bad thing on the European stage or in the SPL for that matter. I know there is a danger that he will compromise the style and we maybe don´t need another holding player like him so soon after Lennon and Lambert, who both went on about a season or two too long. We won the fair play league so we are not a physical team.So can you imagine Aiden coming up against the guy who chestbutted Zidane? Those would be moments to have the Grave one around.
Someone posted a reference to Capello earlier, I have no great love for the man but what do you need to do to be a successful manager at Real?

He posted that his mother had been struck down with a very serious illness and was in a coma.

The prognosis was such that if she survived the quality of life was likely to be so poor that it might have been a mercy had she succumbed.

There was a staement posted which in the circumstances was the most appalling I have ever heard addressed to another human being.

I will not repeat it as it was deleted before P8ddy had the misfortune to read it and I hope he has not in the meantime been appraised of it contents.

However i believe it was mission accomplised and I do not believe we will hear from him again for which the blog is very much the poorer.

    Guys,

Particularly those defining the press ecosse as 'just doing their job' or 'tubthumping' (My words not yours) - in the hope of gathering more coin or revenue. Sports journalists are not born that way and fewer are trained that way - they are journalists - plain and simple.

Let me share a wee story with you. I know this story to be true, to be a fact - I would stand up in court and tell it a lot more specifically than I am going to here.

It is safe to say that Scotland has 2 main red tops. And that these are more suited to, though not exclusive to, the West Coast of our dear country.

A few years ago, one of these two beacons of the fourth estate was covering a story. Quite horrific and involving the ultimate abusive death of a child. The father or step father was found guilty and was duly sentenced. The reporter brought back three photographs of the guilty man. Him and some other reporters discussed what photo to use.

It was unanimously agreed that one of the man wearing the hoops would be used. This had nothing to do with the photo's quality etc. These guys wanted guilt by association. They systematically wanted to link two things together.

I stopped buying red tops when I heard this story.

    So am I paranoid? No.

Do I think that reporters have an agenda? Yes.

Do they carry the baggage of the establishment? Yes.

What we should always be looking at is not just what is reported as fact, but indeed how it is reported and the intentions of that 'How'.

The guy was an abusive parent - fact.
The guy was found guilty - fact.
The guy was a Celtic supporter - fact.

One of these facts is not germane to the story. Indeed its inclusion serves a different agenda entirely.

The guys on the back pages don't start off there - just remember that...

    Rant over.

    U.
