Why Celtic have left so many dumbstruck

The lack of credit and respect offered to Celtic as they spend millions assembling Team 3, indeed, a complete news blank on the signing of £3m Massimo Donati in some places, has irked many.

Far from being some media plot to offer succour to the flotsam and jetsam SPL also-rans, which I am sure it is not, we are witnessing a profound, if silent, awakening.

Celtic spending handsome amounts of money does not fit the belief system of many people, including the press and several contributors to Celtic Quick News, whom we heard plenty from this time last year, but are completely, totally and absolutely struck dumb at the moment.

As I have said for many years now, when there has been money and players available, Celtic have spent every penny available to them, we are currently witnessing no more than this. Indeed, it could be argued that our current budget, which I expect to be inline with earnings, is more conservative than every season from 1999 – 2006, when huge losses were recorded.

We will have good seasons and bad, win leagues and lose the odd one, but thanks to the guidance of Dermot Desmond, Brian Quinn and Peter Lawwell, who each took enormous abuse when navigating Celtic into where they are now, and the substantial work of Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan, this is your Generation of Domination. Try to enjoy it.

Paul - i am enjoying it. This has been a period of transition and some of the football hasn;t been great to watch, but we have been the best team in Scotland by far over the last 5 years whilst also reducing debt, building a stable business platform for the future and being successful on the park and as a business.

I'm confident that our team will perform well this year and that there will be some fast attacking flowing football and the GOD will continue for many years to come.

I'm very happy that the media is ignoring our transfer successes. Just wait until the season starts and we run away with the league - what will they say then? Isn't it adding pressure to the other lot if the media insists against all reason that they are going to run us close?

  • At 25/06/07 13:03, gweedorebhoy said…

Paul this is indeed very positive and a good stepping stone for the future. If we can get the defence sorted out and a real striker of proven quality in then we could truely be in for a Generation of dominance.

The huns will spend something so i would rather we pulled away from them and left them to the fate they deserve.

Rather dispointed in the blog so far. Lurked but did not post as it seems you have very few regular contriubuotrs more like a small group posting most of the time not good for debate.

Whilst its great to be a tim we need to avoid self appreciation societies.

Anyway hope you can get more people interested as this is still one of the best sites around.

    Enjoy the close season

We need to be able to streamline as well. Financially as well as for dressing room happiness we need to move some players on.

Some players are happy, in fact some all too happy to be a squad player and pick up their bumper wage packet.

In three positions we have too many bodies, some of them must be moved on. Including players I believe could break through, at least as cover, we have:

    Centre-backs:
    Pressley
    O'Dea
    Kennedy
    McManus
    Caldwell
    Virgo (who?)
    Balde
    Cuthbert

By the looks of it we're looking for a top quality signing for this position, please Gord!

    Centre-mids:
    Sno
    Brown
    Gravesen
    Jarosik
    Donati
    Bjarnasen
    Hartley
    Ferry
    Grant

Not sure if we're done in the transfer market here or not).

    Strikers:
    Zurawski
    Riordan
    Miller
    JVOH
    Killen
    McDonald
    Beattie

I'm pretty sure we'll be hoping for another.

    So that's 8 possibly 9 central defenders; 9 central midfielders; 7 possibly 8 strikers.

Now there's nothing like having a quality squad to choose from but there's an optimum number for each position and this is taking it a bit far.

It's not as if all the players are even quality and think of the wages taken up by some of these guys.

IMO we need to sell 3 defenders, 3 midfielders and 3 strikers. And we had better start soon because as we have seen in the past it can be more difficult to move a player on than to bring a new one in.

Paul - is that what YOU think or what you've heard ?

I agree that we need to lose 2. A difficult choice though, the obvious ones to me would be Kenny Miller and Beattie.

kenny - loved his attitude and selfless running and movement but sometimes it was actually to the detriment of the team because we then lacked a player in the box when a midfielder looked to deliver a cross.

Beatts - Very strong quick player and can finish. On the minus side, injury prone and poor first touch (2nd touch usually a tackle)

Magic offered us nothing last season - although he did play in the world cup and then struggled with injuries for much of the season. But if he comes back with the right attitude and his batteries recharged, he could be a 30 goals a season striker.

Deek - Great player, clinical finisher, lightning feet and a wonderful 1st touch. There is a reason that WGS doesn;t play him - whether it's because he's not big and strong enough or whether it's a discipline issue I don't know. I just hope he get's his chance this year.

JVOH - must stay - no injuries this year please

Killen - worth a gamble. Great scoring record for our feeder club.

Scott macDonald - will score goals - he's quick, good poacher and a right handful for big defenders.

Sheridan - one for the future, needs to stay.

    Hi Paul and fellow Celts,

You have hit the nail on the head Paul! Forgive me, but, out of curiosity you understand, I browsed the Sunday Smell website and had to laugh at the 'Rangers possible purchase?' headline and the solitary article, way, way down the pecking order, which mentioned DOnatti; an interview with Enrico Annonni giving his views. Like you Paul, I thought is this all they can say...? Surely this IS news...?

This was a great reminder to me why I very rarely go there (the Sunday Smell website or sister toilet paper) and why I never buy them.

I will now have to steel myself to resist future temptation when our next even bigger signing comes along.

Whilst I do think Smith&McCoist will have a positive influence on Rangers this season, I am SO looking forward, with great confidence, to next season and I expect us to step up another gear.

    Yours in Celtic,

    Jim.

our main objectives look like being completed before we even fly out to the uhrencup

Just to add to this and emphasis the imbalance we only have:

    Fullbacks:

    Naylor
    Wilson

What happened to the Doumbe deal? I'm not convinced he's as good as people think but believe he'd be adequate cover for both positions.

    Wingers:

    Nakamura
    McGeady
Riordan (although I don't think defensively he'd good/willing enough to play here for Celtic)
O'Brien is possibly good enough for cover here.
Brown can play on the right but I'd think he'd be first choice with Donati through the middle.

Basically we've too much cover through the middle (the part of the team ironically that wasn't as good as it should have been for the past 2 years) and no cover at all out wide.

I'm actually amazed how we coped last season - Telfer leaving was felt, I think many only started to realise he wasn't as bad as they thought after he left (and we had Caldwell playing as fullback).

Jim the Tim - see Gordon's comment above which I echo.

It will be all the sweeter when we dominate the Scottish league for many years to come. I truly believe that the gap between us and Rangers will widen and the gap between Rangers and heart, hibs, aberdeen will narrow.

We must not be complacent though, we must carry on the way we have been doing over the last few years and build upon our already growing European reputation.

    hail hail

We don’t need credit from the likes of them; the record books will speak our successes long after those cretins are redundant.

    But Please,
    Pray my Ghod, Please,

Let nobody rest on their laurels.

The double has gone. It’s in the history books. Next season is a totally new chapter.

    From the fan, who can only afford one game every so often, (but a MASSIVE SUPPORTER none the less), to all those wealthy geezers, centre stand;
Let’s do, whatever we can, to make the dream of a G.O.D. become a reality.
From the ball boy to Brian Quinn and his board. Think about tomorrow and how we can make it ours.

Not so we can dominate Scottish football (that is a prerequisite and not an easy one either)……….but that we can compete, respectfully, at the pinnacle of European football.

(Read who the AC Milan supporters considered their biggest hurdle to success was last year. We’ve got respect, now I just want to go one step further).

    PS
I think a little bit of PASSION is creeping its welcome way into the thread leader.

Don’t let them get to you.

I'm looking forward to being there to see him unfurl the flag this time and get the reception he deserves.

A different viewpoint on the amount of trophies won debate.

In a quiet morning in timdom with not many newsworthy stories to speak of my thoughts are turned to an argument I recently had with one of our brethren from the other side of the City.

    Article continues below

The debate ultimately headed towards the last stand of all Rangers fans arguments, The Alamo if you will. "But we huv won mair trophies than you".

This is a popular and indeed true argument that we have all had to endure throughout the years, perpetuated by the flag waving Dundonian in the Setanta Sports advert.

"Yes". I replied, but we have won the European Cup.

"Ancient history" my ORC friend gleefully proclaimed, "That was forty years ago"!

It is at this point that I knew I had him snared, hook line and sinker! The old "that’s ancient history" argument does enough to render our greatest ever achievement as lesser in the average currants eyes, but it also renders their "most successful club in the world" as void also.

    Now for the science bit.

Let us compare the amount of trophies won in the last 40 years, first by our rivals

    Scottish League Titles (17)

    1975, 1976, 1978, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005

    Scottish Cup (12)

    1973, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003

    Scottish League Cup (18)

    1971, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005

    European Cup Winners Cup (1)

    1972

    Total trophies won: 48

And now for Celtics record for the same period

    Scottish League Titles (21)

    1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 19741, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007

    Scottish Cup (16)

    1967, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1980, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1995, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007

    Scottish League Cup (10)

    1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1975, 1983, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2006,

    European Cup (1)

    1967

    Total trophies won: 48

So the next time one of our supremacist xenophobic cousin’s approaches you with the argument that they are the most successful team ever, counter his argument with the winning of the European Cup. When he retorts with (and trust me, he will) "that’s ancient history" point out the statistics above to him. Let him know that in the last 40 years the only trophy his team has won more times than Celtic is the League Cup! Stick his 51 titles up his arse by reminding him that we have won that particular accolade 4 times more than his contemptible organisation in the last 4 decades. When he is flailing on the ropes, finish him off with a quick one-two of "four more Scottish Cups" followed by a roundhouse called the European Cup.

Enjoy watching his face hit the floor!

Yours in Celtic (and getting it right up them)

I'm glad you brought this up Paul. For a Scottish Club (Celtic) to lure an exciting prospect (Massimo Donati) from the European Champions (AC Milan) & for it to receive limited press coverage in Scotland is unbelievable. In one newspaper this took 2nd place to 'Faubert swoop as big as Gazza and Laudrup'. After 3 paragraphs you stumble on the small matter of Bordeaux not looking to sell their midfield asset & the price on the French Internationals head being between £7 - £10 million. I doubt that Rangers have this kind of budget for their full summer spend, so why run with the story at all & why should it then dominate so many column widths in the Scottish Press?

The two other humourous spins this summer have been Rangers signing Jean Claude Darcheville, a player allegedly worth £3M, but the Ibrox club cleverly snapped him up for free. Some journalists decided to omit from their articles that Darcheville couldn't get a game at Notts Forest a few years previously. The other good one so far is that the best young player in Scotland (Scott Brown)would cost Celtic close to £12 million when you add up the wages & potential bonus & his car insurance & his monthly Asda bill & his dog's monthly pedigree chum....blah blah blah

Whilst there's no guarantee with any signing you make, it's reassuring to know that the club is doing it's homework in advance of the transfer windows. Also i would sooner see us make this type of signing rather than chase a blue chip signing, as our recent big name signings such as Jiri Jarosik (Chelsea), Thomas Graveson (Real Madrid) & Roy Keane (Man Utd) have been pretty underwhelming.

It's the low key signings such as Lee Naylor or the players we've acquired from value markets who we extensively monitored that have been central to our success such as Nakamura & Boruc. It also ties in more with the history & profile of the club as the underdog - which takes us nicely back to Lisbon & we know what happened there.

I hope that we manage to hold onto the likes of SN, AB, JJ, TG an MZ they are CL class and I just wish that we would stop openly touting players that have just won us a double and done the best we have done in Europe for years.

Have to agree with you regarding JJ and TG.Which is one of my worries for next season-the time for Celtic supporters to be really worried is when things appear to be going swimmingly.Team the third hasn't kicked a ball yet..

    Afternoon Paul/CQN

I believe you may be doing yourself and like minded websites out of some credit here Paul.

Could it be that a lot of Celtic fans are just simply not buying the rags anymore and so the market has shifted? I don't think I am alone on here in that I don't buy newspapers but rely on various websites for my current affairs and celtic fix every day.

Perhaps the denizens of darkness are still clinging to the tabloids as the main source of light?? If that be the case then perhaps teh tabloids still feel that a little bit of positive spin will keep them coming back for more.......until of course the editiors decide that the story of their downfall will sell more sheets....

    Vargas shampoo,

Many moons ago (I think it was November 2005) you asked about a certain Felix O'Neil.

I went and checked up on some stuff and compiled the following (and then forgot to post it).

    Better late than never.

    RE: FELIX O’NEILL

    Courtesy of

An Alphabet of the Celts By EUGENE MacBRIDE & MARTIN O’CONNOR with GEORGE SHERIDAN

    Name : Felix O’Neill

    Role : Right Back

    Born : Motherwell 21st December 1889

    Career : Shotts United/ CELTIC 21st December 1910/(Alloa Loan 26th January 1911)/CELTIC again 3 November 1911/Bathgate 7 September 1912/Dykehead 25ty September 1912

Celtic Debut : versus St Mirren (away) 1-1 Scottish League 18th March 1911

After “some great games for Shotts united,” Felix O’Neill played his solitary league match for Celtic in place of Sunny Jim Young in a half back line reading O’Neill, McAteer and Mitchell. At Alloa he played against Celtic in a friendly at Recreation Park on March 4th 1911 alongside ex-Celts Willie McOustra at centre-half, Pat Geehrin and John Young (Alloa won 2-1).

Hello Paul and thanks for the welcome greeting on last thread.

I love the fact, that the media don't give us the credit. I get a buzz from it, knowing how much it upsets them that we are doing things right at all levels throughout the club.

I am really excited and looking forward to the start of the season. I couldn't believe the Brown signing, we were told for months it was a done deal he was going to the teddies. Another media act of folly.

Add in Donati to the the other signings. I do hope we see Gordons Celtic Vision become a reality this season.

I still think Tommy G can make an impact, we will be playing a faster style of football which will suit him. I was disapointed like everyone with his form last season. I was raving about him from the rooftops when he signed. The old saying "ability is permanent, form is temporary". I hope this proves to be right.

Some size of squad, can't keep them all happy. I expect ghuys to be leaving shortly?

Oh, and i dig your new domain name. G.O.D. Indeed.

    Cheers

I have been enjoying it for the last 7 years.
On looking back the G.O.D. began I believe on August 27, 2000.
We just didn't realise it at the time.
So there have been one or two hiccups along the way.
But consider the managerial merrygoround that has marked the last 7 years.
Martin and Gordon have seen off 3 Rangers managers and will likely witness another change if Wattie and co do not have enough fingers to insert in the dyke. This kind of chopping and changing is unforeseen in Rangers' history, and as we have all experienced, is the mark of a side in decline, smelling of fear and desperation.

As the fab four sang "I like it."

    BigLiam,

David Murray purchased that site for £16.90 through one of his property vehicles. It now resides in the Rangers balance sheet valued at £32m in order to maintain a net asset position.

Vladimir Romanov is interested in purchasing it so Herts can play there next year when he turns Tynecastle into a multi million pound apartment complex.

It is rumoured that we are going to replace the mineshaft with a smaller cheaper, Scottish mineshaft with a lot of potential from Hibs.

    With regards to the number of CB and Central NF players;

When you talk about the midfield, I would have to think that someone from Gravesen, Jarosik, and Hartley is likely to go. I would prefer it to be one of the 1st two.

As for the CB, I would think Balde will be gone and Virgo will go back out on loan. I would like to think that everyone else stays.

We are light at the full backs, but a couple of the wee bhoys were out on loan last season and will probably be kept closer to home this season.

I cannot for the life of me get annoyed about any of this. Let's see: a media that is congenitally pro-Rangers in it's outlook; a dearth of quality online fanzines of any quality for Rangers supporters; by contrast, a healthy number of fairly robust Celtic websites; why bother?

Everyone knows that while Davie Provan is expected to denigrate Celtic at every opportunity, Derek 'DJ' Johnstone plays the part of Lord Haw Haw, propaganda merchant in chief for Edminston Drive. Where other ex-Rangers players such as the Wildean Mark 'Um, err, hmm' Hateley deliver eviscerating commentary on the state of Rangers with pearls such as 'I ,um err, expect Rangers, err, to deliver a much stronger challenge this season' we have Charlie Nicholas (never a true Celt in any case- onstage with Maggie Thatcher back in the day) sticking the boot in where there is no boot to stick.

Let us accept and enjoy the fact that we are buying better players than they are. We have more money than them. Whereas we are run by some of the brightest and best brains at executive level -in any industry never mind in football alone- they have a megalomaniacal individual whose best days are behind him. We pull in more money than they do. We have a bigger fanbase than them. We are welcomed all over Europe- the only people pleased to see Rangers fans in foreign shores are local polis looking forward to a few hours extra over-time and the opportunity to bash some bigoted bonces. They have the white elephant over at Moonbeam Park that is losing money hand over fist, we will soon have a great facility at Lennoxtown. We were shrewd enough to engage the local community and it has garnered no end of positive goodwill from local people in the area. We have a very marketable tradition, history and a fantastic looking strip- they resort to selling some Chinese football team's top in their shops to appeal to the lowest common denominator amongst their support (sorry did I say their shops, I meant the shops that JJB own- they've even sold the income for the next x amount of years in a transaction which was the footballing equivalent of one of those Cheque Cash till payday places). You might have noticed that I've not even mentioned the team on the pitch yet.

We have fantastic strength in depth. The youth teams dominate at all levels. We have the critical mass and have had sufficient exposure in the Champions League that even if Murray and 'Watty' could find some money from somewhere (Murray must have something down the back ae the sofa, or at the very least a bring-n-buy would pack them in at Ibrox) in a straight fight any player worth his salt and with ambition would pick us (sorry Nacho).

So. We have more money. We are a bigger club. We are more successful on the pitch and commercially. We are a positive, outlooking social organisation that creates links with fans old and new that other clubs, never mind those that have been up to their knees in bile, can only dream of. We have a team, a manager, a board and a fanbase that all moves in unison together. Having said all that, I ask you this, who gives a stuff what the sports editors of dwindling-circulation rags deem to put on their back pages?

(Apologies to any sensible 12 year olds who read CQN), however that doesn't mean that they should have Carte Blanche to print or broadcast whatever they like. As long as i've been alive there has always been distorted coverage of Celtic in the Scottish press.

Although Newspapers are a dwindling Industry, they can still heavily influence the working man, which on occassion can lead to our Club uneccessaryily coming under severe scrutiny for nonsense such as losing a pre season game. Similtanouesly the team on the other side of the City are somehow able to avoid the same level of intense coverage. There is a tedious trend where Fantasy is given more coverage than Reality -remember the one about The Casino at a time when McLeish's team on the park were a laughing stock. As long as the Tabloids continue to print Rangers Propaganda & unfair coverage of Celtic news then we have to dig in deep till people see sense.

Secondly it is great to see us signing players and spending money but who is to say donati and brown will be any different from the large expectations placed on gravesen and jarosik only last season.

Obviously we all hope they are a success but a bit early to gloat methinks.

Who on this site can give an honest assessment of donati? The kid looks good fom the utube clips i have seen but i am sure scheidt looked good on video to barnes too! I am not saying the kid is bad he could be a world beater, i dont know but neither do most on here!

    Evening Times headline (Darrell King):

'Faubert swoop as big as Gazza and Laudrup'

The article quotes Gilles Rousset, who actually says:

'He might not have that big a name like a Paul Gascoigne or Brian Laudrup, who have signed for Rangers in the past. However it will be just as much of a surprise signing for me if it happens.'

Er, not quite the same thing as the headline then.

Rousset is given a full page to air his views, which amount to 'if any club signs a good player, he will do quite well.' Rousset says things like:

    - I'd be surprised if Bordeaux let him go
    - Rangers can't afford him
    - prices quoted in France are £7m-9m
    - he could use the SPL like Boumsong, and Rangers could profit, but he was a Bosman, and Faubert, er, isn't

Damarcus Beasley is expected in Glasgow within 48 hours: 'My future has been sorted out and I know where I will be playing my football next season'. And that's it. Not quite the same thing as 'deal closed'.

Does anyone know if Darrell King is a novellist? His fiction writing is top notch.

My colleague in Italy who is a Milan fanatic, says that Donati was signed as a very promising youngster, played one season at Milan then was loaned out to get experience but "disappeared" for a couple of seasons so was not considered good enough to displace Gatusso but last season had a great season at Atalanta. He says he is good enough to play in Serie A or a "similar" league quite comfortably.

I would suggest that this means that he is definitely good enough to play well in Scotland.
