Where is everyone?
-
Come on the Hoops.
Yes, it's pre-season, but everyone wants to get off to a great start, with goals and thrills galore.
Good luck to all the players, especially those earning the privilege of wearing the Hoops for the first time.
-
Line up?
-
Interesting team:
Brown
Wilson
Pressley
Kennedy
Naylor
McGeady
Donati
Graveson
Bjarnsson
Miller
Zurawski
-
Brown, Wilson Pressley,Kennedy Naylor.
Gravesen Donati, Bjarnasen Mc.Geady.
Miller, Magic
-
Sorry gordon. Slow fingers
-
Is it balmy in Basle? Looking forward to hearing who is playing tonight. We can´t play worse than last pre-season, can we?? I would much prefer to lose 3-4 than have a 0-0. We need to hit the back of the net more often to warm up before the games that really matter.
Good luck to all those on board the Celtic craft.
-
Bench?
-
Given thats the line up, and that this is a pre-season friendly Im wondering what the Subs are. Aparently Stracha sugested tehre might be a new XI after the break. Oh and whos Captain?
-
No mention of either subs or captain as yet on Setanta.
-
Pics just coming through - Pressley has the armband.
-
Magic hits the bar from 6 yds - Manny Kaltz (disguised as Mark Wilson) hits lovely cross
-
Magic hit the bar after good cross from Wilson.
-
Looking forward to a pre-season that leads to the establishment of a team that can play at a variable tempo and with a flexible shape regardless of individual performances

McGeady shuffle then shot from 22 yards flashes low drive wide of keeper's right hand post.
-
Keep the comments coming lhads. I'm media-challenged tonight (for a change).
Sean South, nice to hear from you again.
-
Brown alert at his near post to push away a speculative angled drive from left edge of the box.
-
G.O.D I've missed this
It may only be pre-season but the Celtic Tingle is back already.
HAIL HAIL THE CELTS ARE BACK
-
Brown great block to deny Swiss striker clean through after a glaring mistake by Gravesen- caught sleeping on edge of 18-yard line.
Then Basle keeper saves well from Magic header and Gravesen trundles weak shot wide.
-
Pitch looks green but very lumpy!
-
Thanks Celtic_First been on hols.
Snap shot from 20 yards flashed wide of Brown's right hand post, but he had it covered,

The tone of your post is hostile towards me.
I'm sorry that i bring that out in you.
For the record i wanted both JJ,and JVOH.
Offcourse i am making comment with the wisdom of hindsight.
I did not post in advance of a player actually pulling on the shirt and say that i thought that he would be a failure.
I won't do that now.
I hope all our signings succeed.
Oh! you stated that i couldn't recognize a good striker.
I know that i can.
HL,CS,JH,FMcG,FMcA,CN,GMcC,MMcG,PVH,JC,TC,
Were all good strikers for Celtic.
On the prediction front.
I predicted last season that KB would score more goals than MZ.
He did despite playing in a worse side.So i do know a goalscorer when i see one.

The pitch is awful. Could do with a good cut.
-
Collie,
You will know that i was a huge fan of Lenny.
I hope Donati exceeds your expectation's.
We still need a good rightback and a thirty goal a season striker.
I want us to cut our losses on TG and JJ.
I live in hope.
You are correct.I am a good ghuy.
thank's
-
Is it just me, or after only 20 mins snap judgement, does Donati remind you of Stan Petrov (no bad thing!)
Tinytim
Good to see you back!
-
Donati gave ball away for second time and that almost led to a home goal. But credit to the Italin- he got back to rescue the situation.
-
taggsybhoy
Snap judgement's.
They are in my bag of tool's.
-
Bit sloppy at times as you would expect at this stage but some decent passing and movement going forward. Wilson looks good so far, which is great as we only have two full backs.
Still, it's good to see the Champions back on the field again.

I'm still waiting for an answer from Celtic's web help.

Just tuned in 10 mins ago. The bhoys are playing some decent stuff on a bumpy pitch. TG is looking good - very composed.
Good ball from Aiden there and a shot from KM just over.

Torrential rain on Tyneside. Picture breaking up badly.

1 - 0 Miller. Lovely thru ball from Teddy B!
-
Yaaaaaaaassss!!!!
Kenny Miller 1-0 !
-
Brown out bravely to punch away from flailing Swiss attacker's foot on six-yard line. Celts got free kick.
Brown has had a very solid first half.
Celtic 1-0 up through Kenny Miller with a coll finish. Brilliantly weighted pass from Teddy Bjarnasson
-
Teddy steals one - puts Kenny in - 1-0
Good block Mark Brown (who didn't look too brave 2 mins ago)

Just great to see some live comments during a game, it seems such a long long time since the last time. Thanks and Mon the Hoops.

apologies to Shug.

1-0 to Celtic at half time.Probably just about deserved although we haven't created a great deal in the final third.
Merit Marks:
Brown 8;
Wilson 7, Pressley 6, Kennedy 6, Naylor 6, Bjarnasson 7, Donati 6, Gravesen 5, McGeady 6, Miller 6, Zurawski 5.
-
Who said earlier that our wow signing would be one of the young lhads already at the club?
I immediately remembered Shaun Maloney's emergence from the shadows in Gordon Strachan's first season in charge and wondered who might be this year's Shaun. Actually, I remember asking the same question on here at the start of last season.
Maybe it's Teddy.
-
There's only one King Kenny:)
Nice play from Bjarney
-
Vertwolf,
...about time you were first. You can buy me a pint to celebrate ;-)
...best wishes for the move and hope all goes smoothly.
We are heading down south for a week from Saturday. See you soon.

Yes, c67. It came through about 5 minutes in. You got it?
Noel
No apologies needed. Just acknowledgement is fine :)
I'nt it good to be back?
And an improvement on last pre season already.
-
First half not so much about individual performances, more about the overall "feel" of the team.
My initial impression is that we have the makings of a team that could be awesome. It is about the demeanour and composure, even allowing for pre season rustiness.
I cannot omit commenting on the performance of Brown, which was first class and showed great awareness of what was happening and Teddy's ( my tip for the top)pass to Miller was "chust sublime".
Consider the players missing from the first half line-up. For the first time I think I can buy into the G.O.D.
With the squad we have it is ,perform or die.
-
After last years pre season carry on, how will the press cope if we win?!
Wee Teddy (we'll have to find him another name) looking a find, Aiden looking sharp again, and Donati looking like Petrov.
-
BTW.
Donatti is very reminiscent of Petrov. Let's hope he isn't as huffy.
-

Welcome. You'll get used to the diziness.

This is team one and a half on now, I think.

Bit early in pre season (4 days) to be giving out ratings after just 45 mins of the 1st game don't you think. IMHO
-
Vibes are very promising. All these positive comments are making my head spin.
-
A few changes made at HT as expected. Balde, McManus (with the armband), Jiri and JVoH all on.
-
ardoch.
How about the iceman,he's a cool player and comes from Iceland.
-
So Bjarnson has been playing out wide?
-
I thought Boruc was the iceman? No that's right, he's the icepole.
Taxi for Ardoch.

still no pics.

Nae Skoosh Brown - or have we stuck him in goals?
I tell you that boy was a waste of money.

-
Celtic start the second half with the following eleven (I think):
M Brown; Wilson, Balde,Pressley,McManus,
S. Brown, Virgo, Jarosik, Riordan,
Vennegoor of Hesselink, McDonald.
Basle force five corners in first nine minutes of second half.
Skipper's armband goes to Steven McManus after Pressley wore it in first half. With Pressley still on it looks like McManus will be captain this season.
-
See how Basel's sponsor is Pirelli. Does that mean they'll get tyred as the game wears on?

it is good to be top scorer for a least one day of the season - eat your heart out Noel - it was an open goal but it still needed to be dispatched!

thanks Ardoch,
but I don't want a date, just a burd with a pirelli calender stuck up her jumper.
-
Not a great deal of incident in the second half but we are putting on a solid European-style (away leg) performance against a relatively full-strength Basle side who are just two weeks away from the start of their league season.
The two Brown bhoys have been the Celts who have caught my eye. McDonald also lively.
-
Both Browns doing well tonight so far
-
Sean South
Thanks. It's comments on the game we want, not a Chennaiseabird versus allcomers bons mots competition.
-
Balde switched off and caught out a ball behind him. Scott Chipperfield clean through, but Mark Brown out quickly and the Basle man shot wide when he should have scored.

Vertwolf
Must be a Holyrood date. I trust Her Majesty is suitably honoured.
HHBhoy
Sorry, I got it wrong. I wasnae imaginin' jumpers involved in this anywhwere. Hopefully Noel can redirect you to some knitting calendars.

Now now CF,now now.
My picture has been frozen on the half way line for the last 8 minutes i.e. impossible to report
Are we there yet?
-
Fairly quiet second half, tbh. Scott Brown showing some good driving runs from midfield. Hopefully we will see him and Donati together in the next game.
-
What about that pitch though? They must have got the potatoes out just in time.
-
We are starting to look tired which is understandable since we have only been back together for four days.
Steady, dsiciplined display although lacking flair up front.
-
Celtic-first
We want comments from the game and chennaiseabird. Tonight is a friendly after all.
Hail Hail
-
We have started with a 1-0 win- looked much fitter and faster than we did in Poland last summer.
Second half merit marks: M Brown 8;
Virgo 6, Balde 6,Pressley 6,McManus 8;
Jarosik 5, S. Brown 8, Wilson 6, Riordan 6;
Vennegoor of Hesselink 6, McDonald 6.
Best players: The two Browns and good to see Wilson, Balde, Virgo and Kennedy all doing OK have injuries.
-
Phew, no cracked creasts then, ya beauty.
-
1 - 0 FT.
Overall a good start to our pre-season program. Several positives, especially Scott Brown who looked to be loving the freedom he had to get forward. Mark Brown looked good too.
In many ways the game confirmed what we know - we have plenty options in midfield, with Naka, Sno and Hartley not even figuring. We have several centre halfs and strikers, as we know.
But we con't have cover at full back. Wilson and naylor looked good in the first half, getting forward in support of the wide men. But there was none of that in the second half with Virgo and McManus at full back. I'm sure the management team know this and are working on it.
Still, it's a good start and great to see the Champs back with a win.
-
Great stuff.Well done the Bhoys.
-
thanks for the updates, deep in the forrest with only a mobile phone. keen to see S Broon do well.

Mark Wilson - the new Frans Thijssen?
Teddy good steal, perfect pass - Cool Kenny finish
JVOH - ?
Has Mick picked up a yard of pace?
Good runout - supply to front men was poor
-
How did JVOH, MacDonald and Riordan look together - balanced or not?
Did we play with 3 up front?
-
CF, didn't feel like a competition.

Always good to hear about a win for the Bhoys even in only a formative test. :-)

Thank you. So was Skoosh tonight. And I think wg is good every night, although I'd need a second opinion.
We can win a cup with this one. Is that one of the differences from last season? For two teams just back from the break, it was impressive. Two Celtic teams I mean. Not the great start you asked for, but good, solid, I would say.
We're starting this pre-season from where we spent much of last season?

Not for the first time Noel you’ve let me see what’s going on. I thank you for the clip.

correct about Holyrood - Mrs VertWolf's dad just about had a heart attack when my boy told him where she was - not a staunch Royalist to say the least
Good to hear the Celts are up and running - I would imagine the Basle support are less than chuffed
Hopefully the WGS plan for fluid attacking football will come to fruition this season

Hi,good game tonight, quite impressed with the midfield and scott brown in particular. Thank god you didnt go the huns son..early days but the bhoy looks a player and a snip at £4M.
I hope PL keeps up the good work over the transfer window and keeps humiliating Sir Moonbeam at every opportunity.
I think, to pinch Naismith from under his nose just might push wattie and co over the edge.
Feeling better about the season ahead now.
-
Noel, I too thank you for nimble-fingeredly letting me see what I have no hesitation in calling the goal of the season so far.
Chennai
I'll take good and solid. Roll on Saturday.
-
I think Davie Hay got it right in his post match analysis when he said that the starting eleven will comprise of a mixture of the two teams that played in either half
Pre-seasons are all about testing ideas, which can sometimes work on the training ground but not in a real match situation.
I think Mark Brown showed why he was bought tonight with some good saves and other players such as Wilson and Bjarnsson showed they have god potential.
Donati didn't set the heather on fire but some of his passing and distribution was good.
For me though two players looked well ahead of the rest. Firstly big Mick who looked assured in evrything he did even when he
was being player as a right back.
But Scott Brown for me was impressive. His control on the ball when moving at pace looked very good and his tanasity in the tackle was really good to see, something that Jarosik and Tommy G should try once in a while.
/Bishop B
-
Had Zurawski's shot gone in he goal of the season competition would have been over by the second minute of the first pre-season game.
Not wanting to get carried away, but that was decent stuff especially when you think there was no Boruc, Naka, Hartley, Sno, Darren O' Dea, Caldwell and the new WOW, box officwe signing.
Wee Skoosh looks the part to me.
-
At 05/07/07 21:44, HHBhoy said…
One friendly one goal one win – wonderful
...and a clean sheet:-)
-
To repeat my half time comment. It was not about individual performances, especially, four days into pre-season. it was about attitude and setting a marker for the season.
For the benefit of those who didn't see the game, the impetus of the team was in getting forward. With a few games of familiarisation of each others strengths and weaknesses, we should be well equipped for the new season.
One thing I will predict is, that given the pool of players at our disposal, fatigue should not be a factor next season.
-
have to go, night all and Aufwiedersehen
Hail Hail
-
Lots of positives tonight.
Could never expect a flowing performance but playing away in Europe against a decent team we never looked in any trouble.
Mark Brown done well - although I'm still nervous every time the opposition hits a shot from outside the box - probably down to years of Douglas/Marshall/Hedman in goals.
Most players did OK, even some you wouldn't expect such as Virgo.
Donati didn't set the heather on fire but from what I see from his technical play he'll be a good player. Crisp passing and when he made his error he had the pace to get back and put in an excellent couple of tackles.
Scott Brown - revelation! Best player on the park by a mile! He doesn't stop running and is always in the face of the opposition doing anything to get the ball and start an attack. Great direct running, ball winning and some nice passes.
Zurawski and Miller did alright, although I couldn't believe it when the commentator said of Miller's goal - "and he's not going to miss from there" - clearly hasn't watched Miller often!
JVOH, Riordan and especially Balde were poor for me. Riordan doesn't look like he can cope playing left-mid. Balde was all over the place and well off the pace.
Looking forward to Saturday now although I don't think Strachan will let us see Donati and Brown together until they're both fully match fit - just so they make an immediate impression.
Finally, TG and JJ both played the same as they did last season, not BAD but not what you'd expect from players of their abilities.
-
Sdstim
Yer right, forgot that, I’m a bit of a wet blanket at times :_)
HH
-
Broon
-
Forgot to mention - Bjarnessen was like a new signing. Played really well and an excellent through ball for the goal. Might not be a regular starter next season but Strachan certainly won't be frightened to use his as a backup.
-
And it's goodnight from me too at 2.52 am.
Adam Virgo and Thomas Gravesen can do better. And will, we all hope.
Scott Brown, at 21(?) and in his first ever game for Celtic, filled the jersey.
VertWolf, Mrs V will have a story to tell. Good.
-
The Killie website that was linked to last night suggests Derby County are the mystery team in for Naismith.
-
Scott Brown showed the dynamism that has been missing for too long in Celtic's midfield.
Early days but he is wan exciting player to watch.
Ma bhoy pointed out that his running style is very reminicent of Henk's and i concur (that wis fur you Tinytim)
Last season we got beat with Legia at this stage so its always good to see the tic winning even if its only a friendly.
-
I guess these games are all about fitness, and getting players used to each other, so that as we move towards the start of the season, the ideal first eleven begins to take shape. From this point of view the lap top loyal were well OTT last season lambasting our lack of pre-season friendlies and I suppose we should avoid going OTT in praise of the victory........but......it's still great to get a win and not give the LTL a crumb of comfort!

Just back from the game (that's the pub)and it's great to watch The Hoops again. Although it was only a friendly it was a game in which Basle were out to impress and the pace and the tackling from both sides was made for a very competitive match.
It was a big improvement on the corresponding game last year in Poland and the differnce in the style of play with Lennon was quite noticeable. Celtic passed the ball faster and were much more prepared to go forward than last year. The players who impressed were:
BROWN. Played the full 90 mins and was MOM. I doubt if Marshall would have kept a clean sheet.
WILSON Also played the full 90 mins although he was a full back in the first half and midfield in the second. Showed some delightful skill on the ball and sent over a great cross for Magic.
NAYLOR I think he's going to surpass last years performance.
McGEADY Was full of running and appeared stronger.
BJARNSSON Did not appear out of place and did put a wonderful pass for Millar to score.
BROWN Certaily added a bit of bite too the midfield and showed some delightful close control.
Those that did not enhance their reputations:
JAROSIK He is not cut out for our type of football and I really hope some club offers 2+ for him soon.
VIRGO He may have lost some weight but he is still the same player. He will not make it.
JVOH His performance worried me. I thought he was at the same level he ended up the season at, i.e. pretty unimpressive.
RIORDAN. Won't displace McGeady with this performance.
Other comments.
Although he did o.k. I didn't thin
