Boumsong, Arteta, Gaol for Rangers!

On 8 July 2004 Rangers sold Mikel Arteta to Real Sociedad for a fee reported by El Mundo as €4m (£2.7m).

On 5 January 2005, Newcastle United PLC announced to the Stock Market that they have bought Jean Alain Boumsong from Rangers for £8m.

On 31 August 2005, Rangers finance director, David Jolliffe, wrote in the clubs annual accounts, “Gain on the disposal of player registrations was £8.4m… and principally relates to the transfers of Jean Alain Boumsong and Mikel Arteta.”

There appears to be a £2.3m discrepancy, a bit of an own gaol, I mean goal for Rangers. Where is the money Sir David?

Paul - slick title to this article - you could get a job on a real paper!

GM (previous thread) - Sarbox sounds like a serious condition. Or ointment for a it! Surely SOX is a more appealing term?!

Also - there are implications for UK firms - but only if they have a listing in the US. Hence the reason the UK banks and others are feverishly attempting to ensure that everything they do comes with the appropriate SOX.

Of course it has no impact on Rangers. Rangers are not quoted - and I do mean that in the nicest possible way!!!

    I'm not a happy chappie!

It is obvious to anyone who knows anything about football that Celtic are striding away from Rangers both on and off the park and just as I'm getting really excited about 15+ in a row, along comes a fiendishly clever Establishment plot to rob of us of our enjoyment and bragging rights!

What's the point in winning all these League titles if THEY are not around to let us gloat? Do you think the DR is going to call us CHAMPIONEEES? No, the headlines will be LUCKY CELTIC or THE POOREST LEAGUE SINCE 1970 or RANGER'S 9 IN A ROW TEAM WOULD HAVE WON AT A CANTER.

I am planning to start a campaign
SAVE OUR GERS. The Daily Record and the Herald have both offered their full backing and the BBC (Scotland) have promised full coverage.

  • At 17/07/07 00:37, Weeron said…

Paul, the difference could be explained in part by any residual book value relating to Arteta. Boumsong would have been on the books for next to nothing, so his entire sale would consist of a gain. MA would have had the unamortised portion of his original fee still there, and this would have come off the sale price before being reflected as a gain.

I noticed this statement from murray. If all of these funds did not, in fact get reinvested in the squad, then this would be another porky pie. One that you shouldn't really make in a Chairman's statement in an annual report.

The operating loss includes an amortisation charge of £5.6m
against our player pool, but does not include the gain on player sales of £8.4m. The gain on player sales was due in the main to the sale of
Jean-Alain Boumsong. All of the proceeds of this transfer were however reinvested in the playing squad...

And tomorrow is Weeron's birthday. This is almost as good as the dodgy tie that Mrs Weeron will undoubtedly give me......

If you look at Delia's post above, it's clear The Herald is taking an unbelievable stance so far (saying nothing), so I'm not defending them and stopped buying after I discovered CQN.

The point about the PA News feed for websites is that The Herald links into PA's output and pays a fee, like in any customer-outsource service provider relationship. If it was going to have people vet PA's stuff, they might as well do their own online news feeds.

It's cheaper to go with PA. Lots of papers do. You just have to satisfy yourself that they're not going to publish anything that is likely to come back and bite you on the bum. That's why PA is super-cautious about everything. It's only in it for the money.

I’m no lawyer but I think I won’t be too far from the truth when I say, I think doctoring the accounts and deceiving shareholders and the public constitutes fraud and is hence a crime. Way above the brief of the SFA and into the realms of criminal courts, punishable in law and HM Prisons.

    From the Scotsman.

RANGERS have been dragged into the ongoing investigation into corruption in football, with police turning up at the Ibrox club yesterday morning with a search warrant.

Officers visited the ground between 7.30am and 9am. Strathclyde Police confirmed it had assisted the City of London force with the investigation and Rangers said they had co-operated fully.

Police also launched raids on Newcastle United and Portsmouth and two unnamed individuals as part of the same investigation but said the raids were not related to the Lord Stevens inquiry, which has also investigated allegations of corruption in English football.

    Notice the differences in tone.
Officers turned up at Ibrox for a visit, while raids were launched on the English sides.

'GG paranoid but seeminly with good reason.

Random initial reflections on ML6 visit.

Global warming. How come it hasn’t reached the west of Scotland?
Sectarianism and bigotry. Happily it seems to be fading based my limited Orange Walk experiences.
Good looking women. Why do they have to open their mouths and shatter the illusion?
Prices. How can people afford the cost of regularly eating out?
Scottish breakfasts. Hopefully my cardiologist has no idea of the ingredients.
Cars. Have diesels claimed at least 50% of the market?
Pubs. Why do bars still insist on no colours being worn? I didn’t have a black and white shirt.
Yobs. What possesses people to key cars?
Fashion. White shell suits? You need a real sense of humour to be seen outside.
M8. Needs extra lanes over its complete length.
    Terrorists. Bring them all on.
Television. Why can’t I get to see Top Gear in the states?
Shopping. Disappointed in lack of 24 hour pharmacy facility. High street shops need longer hours. Why are supermarkets so untidy?
Tourism. Needs better coordination and promotion. Need to extend hours beyond 5PM.
Religious Practice. Disappointed at falling Sunday mass turnout and judging by the mainly empty car park the Presbyterian numbers have also deteriorated.
    Glasgow. Makkah.
Edinburgh Airport. Really friendly staff including the security police. Could it have been my Celtic T shirt?
Grangemouth. Perfect place to locate Falkirk’s stadium.
Airdrie & Coatbridge. Ageing without grace.
North Lanarkshire Moss. Cradle of life. Mine at least.

    GG,

Although the stnce of The Herald is unbelievable and might lead us to think that this will all be swept under the carpet - it won't.

The big difference is that this investigation is not being led by Strathclyde's Finest - sounds like it is probably the Fraud Squad who are involved. The fact that other teams are implicated in an (alleged) chain of deceit and corruption means that this cannot simply 'go away' because Scotlands establishment want it to.

They are having similar problems with EUFA on the football front. It must have come as a bit of a shock to your average bear to find that the rest of Europe is not run by a bunch of deaf masons.

GG (others please scroll on by - you know who you are)

    Interesting observations of Scotland.

The only one I feel qualified to comment on is attendance at Mass. No question. You're entirely correct. The latest figures available show Sunday Mass attendance of 204,645 out of a total Catholic population of Scotland of 652,015.

These numbers are already four or five years old and anecdotal evidence suggests a further decline in the intervening period. But they're not bad - 31 per cent.

People still come to have their children baptised and still engage with the Church at the time of children's first Holy Communion and Confirmation. For me, it's here that Catholic schools really come into their own. They do a fantastic job of keeping a huge proportion of the Catholic community linked to the faith.

Funerals are also the other important time in people's lives when the Church provides them with great support.

The one the bishops of Scotland are really concerned about is marriage. The numbers are dismal. Many who do get married go for the beach in Antigua option. Many young(ish) people steer clear of the commitment altogether.

Now, looking on the bright side, as priest numbers continue to fall, we are going to find ourselves soon with far fewer Sunday Masses in each community. In many, there will be only one chance to get to Mass. If everyone who practises goes at the same time, we will find oursleves, as in days gone by, with standing-room only, great singing, great sense of community and so on.

God's ways are not our ways. In fact God's ways are as high above our ways as the heavens are above the earth.

    Be of good cheer.

Firstly a breakdown in the nudge nudge ,wink wink, say no more culture of letting the suspect know that they are under investigation.
Nobody had any advance warning and the SFA were completely unaware.
Gordon Smith has seen many things in the game(maybe he should tell us?) but had to admit that he was taken aback by what was happening in his own lodge..i mean parish

"I could hardly believe it.We were completely unaware of what was happening(nothing new there then)and I was astonished. We had no prior knowledge or warning something like this was about to be done"
I get the impression that it is only his many years of displaying Dignity taht prevents him making explicit how outrageous and unfair is such conduct .

Alas poor Celtic. With them Dignity (or lack of)goes together like salt and wound.

Celtic blow..they fly to US minus Capone.

Gordon Strachan administered a telling off to Jim O`Brien for not playing the Celtic way in Peterborough. He will also do him (O`Brien) no special favours in his attempt to break into the first team.
What a hopeless excuse for a manager..cannot sign foreign player and has no idea how to treat young home talent.

Ah but you forget Jim O'Brien is not a "home" talent so hell mend him and all who are as misguided;>)

    derbyshirebhoy @9.28,

That Morton game you mention, was that one of those times when Yogi ran amok in his sannies? I think I was in the Jungle that day. I can't remember the Clyde gaem. That wasn't the occasion Bertie sat on the ball, was it? i was there that day but I have a feeling that game was played late in the season, like Easter time.

The Clyde game was a Glasgow Cup match at Hampden.

Any update on the Curant Bungs?

The Morton game was actually on Christmas Day. I was in the old enclosure. I'm pretty certain Joe Mc Bride played and scored a few in one of his last games before he succumbed to that knee injury. I remember wee flurries of snow.

The Clyde game was on New Years day. Don't remember much except it may have been raining. Considering I'd had no sleep for around 48 hours you'll have to forgive me.

The Rangers game was on the 3rd. Like you I was at the Celtic end. Always thought that the bhoys felt it best to wait till they turned round so that we could all see the goals clearly. As I said before 10 would not have flattered us that day.

I posted some time ago re being involved before the match in one of the most bizarre episodes of my Celtic supporting life but I'll have to save that for later to recount the story.

In the past in Ireland a Catholic/Protestann union was referred to a mixed marriage. (I
understand our near neighbours used to call it jumping the dyke which may have an entirely different connotation today.)I had forgotten that Jim O`Brien had engaged in the modern equivelent.

Can anybody tell me what this means:

'The player is available on a free transfer having seen out his contract in France, but Rennes are entitled to a fee in any transfer after allowing the player to join Celtic last year.'

    (Taken from Sky Sports)

This one's confused me for a while; we had JJPD on loan with an option to buy however now it turns out he's out of contract. Why the option to buy and why oh why would it continue now he is a free agent looking to move to another club?!?

I suppose the fee we would have to pay is to cover having use of him while on loan & having the option to buy him before anyone else.

Very familiar with the "mixed marriages" and "jumping the dyke" Grandfather was a Sullivan from Connemara and Grandmother born Brennan in Greenock but I believe the family were also from Galway. The other half of my family are Ayrshire born and bred.

    derbyshirebhoy,

thanks for the reply. You are dead right about our having been able to score 10 that day, and that in the second half alone. I remember Wilson scoring for them after about 5 minutes and, I think, that was the last attack they had.

I think that's what this team needs-a good drubbing of the Pondlife. The 6-2 game really set the tone for the Martin era,and it sounds like the 5-1 game didn't do Jock's team any harm, either.

I too come from a mixed marriage. My parents were wed in the RC church, but not at the altar as the church did not allow it in the 50s.

Jumping the brush,or broom, meant to be living together, but not in wedlock;as in'that lassie's living over the stick in Eastriggs'

I'm glad to hear that the SFA was not alerted in advance of the raid, or should that be friendly visit for an early morning roll and sausage. Giving a warning would have kind of defeated the purpose wouldn't it?

The old joke about investigations into the police comes to mind - a fair and impartial inquiry by officers of a different lodge. Still, at least the London police are leading on this one.

To be serious, if the alleged crime is as simple as not banking all of the income from the Boumsong transfer, how come the external auditors didn't uncover it? I don't know exactly what paperwork accompanies a transfer but surely it must detail how much is paid and when, and an auditor would be able to verify if the payment was actually made?

They say the past is a different country..they do things differently there.

I think the Catholic Church`s main conern regarding marriage now
is to to try to ensure that they are mixed marriages as opposed to same sex unions.

As for the future I think it started at the 6-2 game.

Gordon J-I think there will be major changes in the role of agents in transfers, and not before time.

I think supporters, especially of teams in the EPL,are baffled and angry at huge sums of money going to agents, and agents agents,to'grease the wheels'of big money transfers.

D'Dude-that game is easily one of the memories I would take with me,if I were ever asked to appear on'Desert Island Hoops'

When I said the bishops were worried about marriage, it was because of the shocking drop in the numbers of people making the formal, public and religious commitment to one another through the sacrament.

That both partners may not be Catholic is not their concern. More than half of the Catholics in Scotland who are being married in Church are marrying a non-Catholic partner.

Desert Island Hoops is a wonderful idea. The people at Channel 67 should go away and develop that immediately.

It would be utterly compelling viewing. You would get to pick seven top moments from your Celtic-watching life, explain why they mean so much to you, and then have to single one out.

I'm not sure I'd keep in the bit about choosing a luxury.

My warblings about marriage were tangenital(opps) to your post.
However i must say I am amazed at the info at people in Scotland forsaking Church weddings.
I had understood that the problem was that people who (in the Popes phrase) had withdrawn their free co-opertaion with the Church continued to avail of the service because they liked the the floor show ..in short they were secular rather than sacramental weddings and in my view show a disrespect for the beliefs of people to whom such things matter.

Many years ago I remwember a priest home from Miami telling me that if he became aware that a couple were not practising Catholics that he would refuse to officate at a Church wedding.

I have also heard that in England it is not uncommon for parents who wish to have their children avail of faith school eductaion to display an outward show of pietythat is entirely bogus.

*I believe that was the 6-1 game, the last of the 1970/71 season where we had equaled our own six-in-a-row record at Hampden against Ayr United on a Thursday night. We had played at Love Street on the Tuesday if my memory serves me well and then the Bully Wee on the Saturday.

It was also the last time the Lisbon Lions would take the field. The Faither who led them out didnae actually play because of injury with Evan Williams in goal instead. It was also John Clark's final game before he left for Morton, he was no longer a first team player by then. It was also wee Bertie's last game and he was carried off shoulder high at the end, he was subsequently transferred to Hibs where he saw out his playing days, his last game as a Hibee was at Hades in a Hibee victory where he also sat on the ball.

My memory of the Clyde sitting on the ball incident from my viewpoint in the Jungle in front of which he performed it was of Stevie Chalmers shirricking him for it, don't know if it was for wasting time or embarrassing the opposition.

We completed the double a few weeks later in one of Jinky’s finest games a replay where he tortured big Ham and Egg, only 4 Lions played that Wednesday night, the end of an era had taken place.

Going back to the Clyde game, only 35,000 spectators were there although it was a packed house. Work was being completed on the old stand which was officially opened the following September, and we played out the season at Hampden hence winning the only “home” title in our NIAR sequence away at Hampden.

Why we completed the season at home against Clyde is a bit of a mystery although rumour had it at the time that the Bully Wee refused to play at Hampden hoping to have the game rescheduled to Shawfield where they would be the recipients of a bumper gate. Celtic decided to play to a limited crowd at Celtic Park.

Ironically, a few months later while Celtic Park was completing the renovations we conceded home advantage to the huns and played our home League Cup and League games there, winning all 3 games including the League Cup away game, in the space of 3 weeks.

Why all this tedious nonsense about the Catholic church, falling mass attendances and mixed-religion marriages?

This is a forum about football in general and Celtic in particular. Not all Celtic fans are devout Catholics and we don't visit this blog to read discussions about religion.

Sometimes we Celtic fans can be our own worst enemies.
