Celtic ready for a more formal challenge against MSL All-Stars

It is testament to the commercial confidence in the US that Celtic were invited to play LPS All-Stars tonight (well really tomorrow morning) after their insipid showing last summer.

After that miss against Uruguay in 1986, All-Stars manager for the occasion, Stevie Nicol, has not featured high on my list of favourite football people, so I was quite pleased to read his, “Being a Rangers supporter, obviously I want to beat Celtic” comment. I now feel more emotionally involved with the outcome of tonight’s game than I would under normal circumstances.

Nicol’s assistant for the day, John Spencer, admitted to American journalists that when he signed for Rangers as a schoolboy, “there was a big commotion”, though thankfully, for the reputation of Scotland, he did not go into detail.

Being four games into their preparations, Celtic should have few summer cobwebs left; I understand tonight might take on a more tactically formal look.

    Hi Paul

You are a man of integrity and have my full respect for all you have done with CQN. I wish you all success with CQN.

I assume you want the Collie issue from the last post just to go away. I'll make it easier for you - I'll take another few months away from CQN. I'll miss CQN more than CQN will miss me.

It isn't enthusiasts like me who should feel uncomfortable here - you have the power to root out the cancer.

All the best to you and the other CQNers - I'll miss you.

Hope the bhoys do well in the US tonight. Another opportunity to enhance our reputation in that massive market.

I've had the pleasure of watching quite a few hoops games in the US over the years, mostly in New York's famous The Parlour. While many fans are Scots/ Irish ex-pats there have always been a comsiderable number of Americans who are coming to love the game. Whether soccer can ever make it to the big time in such a crowded market (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, NASCAR etc) is debatable, but I think we can enhance our global name and games like this will certainly help.

It will also be interesting to see how young Jospeh performs against us. I have heard that we retain an interest in signing him.

PVSDP stick around and don't take the huff, mate. I'm half black and I welcome these debates from time to time as people sometimes need to know when they are out of order unintentionally or not. I had a book till I moved to spain a few years back and I heard stuff from our support and didn't get much back up when I challenged it.

Speaking of Spain - this is the land of taches but the new generation don't seem to be taking up the mantle. Can't think of one Spanish player with one. Anybody?

Hang about mate you’re putting Paul in an awkward position.

Paul has already taken what he believes to be the appropriate actions.

It is up to Collie to do likewise. Whichever way he chooses to go.

But don’t throw the toys out of the pram just yet .

Give Collie his chance to respond, after all he did take a few hits and as you know from your own experiences, it is not particularly nice.

As far as I see, Paul is trying to stay above it and give broad licence to debate, to those of us on here who wish to do so.

    Lets wait and see.

On that page, George Reilly and Paul Atkinson were mixed up by Panini - Paul Atkinson may not have 'a Sproat' but salute him for services to tache two years in a row. I suspect the beast influenced many of those taches. Rab Kilgour of St Johnstone looks like one of those photos from barbers in the 70s and those Scottish players with cloudy skies behind them always scared me a bit.

On top of taches, the first names of your modern footballers are a bit too formal - James and Steven and David not Jimmy and Steve and Davy. Andrew Cole indeed. There are a couple of Clives on that page - you don't get many Clives to the pound in the EPL - a Jeremy, a Hector even less. And the 70s gaves us Drews.

The dug is racist. Every 3 months we have the same nonsense going on from that mongrel and we will again. And again and again.
Persistent inflammatory contributions hoping for a reaction and some sort of acceptability and understanding. Scrolling by is not the solution, hounding it out of town when it spews its manure is what is required, but you will never change its ways.

I can't believe anyone who has read this site for a year or more could give it the benefit of the doubt. I don't consider the coterie as Celticminded, just constant BS.

Hope we can get a good result tonight for our US fans after last years fiasco.

Like you, I have gone into self-imposed exile because of the holier-than-thou attitude of the poster(s) you refer to, but checking in occasionally to see what's going on.

For what it's worth, I believe that poster to have posted the phrase intending it just as his/her/it's explanation was, but the other, more offensive meaning was not lost on him/her/it. After all, has he/she/it not had previous for the same thing in the past?

I'm sure he/she/it is enjoying the attention his comment intended. This is, of course, just my opinion!

Stick around my friend. You are more valued than he/she/it is...

  • At 19/07/07 13:50, pvsdb said…

Thanks Mike for yr support but why do so many of us have to put up with his manure?

Its up to collie and Paul to do the right thing. I'm not attacking Paul, I just can't see why he tolerates these constant controversies without a demand for an apology and a promise of acceptable behaviour.

CQN is Celtic site and should be dedicated to Celtic chat. Thats all I want.

  • At 19/07/07 13:51, miketw10 said…

    And now to football...

Isn't it a bit worrying that Thomas Graveson is looking more and more like he is going to be content to sit on £45k a week for the next 2 years, when it's patently obvious that Gordon Strachan is not going to use him again.

I read today that Bryan Robson has given up on signing TG as he is waiting on Celtic to pay up the remainder of his contracted wages.

Now I might be getting some of this wrong on the minor details, I'm sure more enlightened posters can correct me on those, but do some players have no scruples? Is the money more important than his self-esteem? TG is in danger of losing any support he may have had from Celtic fans if he sticks to that standpoint!!!

The more people entertain those particular posters, the more they will stay around and feed on the oxygen supplied by it.

It's not up to Paul to ban certain individuals, although I'm not even sure he can. Where would he start? Where would he end? I think all he CAN do is delete posts, and if he went down that route, he could find himself deleting posts all day, when he is already a very busy man.

IMO he went down the right road by deleting the offending post and admonishing the poster as soon as he became aware of it.

Glen, your scenario might cause problems for some, but it is only one scenario. Don’t get too hung up on details at the moment. If something like this can be pushed through there will be a solution to accommodate.

Psv, your carefully worded “he’s racist”….”Paul, why do you allow it?” is unfair on me, I did delete the comment remember. I have taken a considerable amount of personal abuse on here without once asking my attackers to leave the blog. I force no one to read or contribute, and I have never blocked an IP address, no matter how aggressive that source has become to me. I do impose rules and when the rules are broken I delete the comment, which I do a couple of times a week, mostly for minor offences.

As such, Celtic Quick News reflects magnificently on the Celtic support for the standards on display.

I feel a bit 'uneasy' about being part of a plot to ostracise certain individuals. I'd rather just do something like that of my own volition.

I know that might sound weird, but I wouldn't want to be branded as being a member of a 'lynch-mob'. I'd rather it was left to each person's own conscience.

That poster has his/her/it's own agenda to follow, just as you, I, and everyone else does.

Live and let live is how I see life, and an apology is all that should be necessary, although I can't see that happening! One can't, after all, apologise for something if one doesn't think they've done anything wrong... can they?

I think the attention seeking of certain individuals on this site is quite shameful. They say something to provoke a reaction and then we find there is no truth in them. Do we get an apology? No, we get more of the same nonsense and people lap it up every time.

In that book I posted about, Andrew Collins mentions Barry Venison as a tv celebrity of his time. Now I know with his mullet it's the other end of the follicular scale, but anybody know what happened to him, tv wise?

    Paul, well done.

Re VAT and all that....one of the causes of 'confusion' is that agents sometimes work for more than one party in a transaction. This is mental. I mean, completely nuts.

FIFA say you can't do this. People do, and are quite open about it. Inland Revenue seem to use FIFA's logic to disallow VAT claims where clubs pay agents who are also working for the player. IR's logic is, you can't be employing the agent when the agent works for the player, so we are disallowing the VAT claim.

I really do think that UEFA could create a 'Transfer Center' and require every transaction to go through this center.

Chelsea are reported to have paid AGENTS 16 million pounds over 3 years!!! When there is no transparency, when you can act for more than one party, and when the numbers are huge....then you have fertile ground for corruption.

The amount of money going out of the game should be of real concern. While few people outside of Leeds seem to have much sympathy for that club....does anyone remember the Harry Kewell transfer? Leeds ended up getting very little of that fee.

The clubs are allowing this to happen. They compete off the park as they do on the park. They enter into crazy deals aimed at short term solutions to promotion, relegation or CL qualification problems.

A central clearing house that allowed only club staff to participate in transactions between clubs, that required representatives to have clear contracts with one, and only one party.....and who publicised details of deals once they were signed....that would be a solution.

In North America, contract details are commonly published. Doing this, and including the agents' cut would bring a spotlight on the vultures that are feeding off our game.

    OK. That's me done....:)

    Weeron,

I agree totally that transfers fees, and all fees, payments, etc., involved should be made public.

The big difference in U.S. sport is that there is no transfer fee. Players are either traded (swapped), become free agents (Bosmans) or are released to join a new team. CLub to club payments just don't exist so there is no cut there for the agent, who works exclusively for the player.

Will we ever abolish transfer fees in football?? A big question and one with enormous ramifications for the game world wide. I can see a day when a challenge will come to the current system, perhaps under restraint of trade.

Paul....You're right cross that brigde if we come to it. I have heard that some members of FIFA (and maybe some of UEFA now we have Platini) believe regional leagues are the future, the world over if we are to keep football competetive at club level.

One thing I'd be keen on, which could go someway to solving the afforementioned problem would be a regional Division 2. Assuming an Atlantic League would have clubs such as Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV, Anderlecht etc (I'm speaking historically, not current form) I am convinced even a second tier of Antwerp, Gothenburg, Aalborg, Willem II, AZ Alkmaar, Boavista etc would still be far more of a step up for the likes of Hearts and Aberdeen in terms of finance and quality than playing St Mirren, Gretna and Inverness.

On another note, if Leeds go out of business (couldnt happen to nicer guys!) whats the possibility of taking their place in the English pyramid similar to what happened with MK Dons. We move Leeds to Celtic Park, change the shirts to Hoops and change the name to Celtic FC. Our SPL place could go to our u21's......pie in the sky but I'd be for it.

I lived near Ipswich in the early 70s and went to a fair few games for three seasons or so. Mick Mills was one player I could just never take to, though.

Several years later I was with a bunch of friends for a weekend in Manchester and we went to a Man U - Southampton game. Mr Mills was playing right back for the Saints that day and we decided to abuse him, just for something to do. At one point he took a throw in just in front of us and gave a bemused look as if to ask what the hell we were up to. Oh, how we laughed.

Anyway, as you say, there are some thoughtful posts on there, However, they do have a thing about one of Scotland's greatest managers. This doesn't fit with the rule you posted. No abusive, threatening, defamatory, racist, obscene or ilegal content.

Given the (deserved) beating that our canine 'friend' took on here, I really don't see that the standards there are equivalent to the ones that Paul sets here.

I needed to get that off my chest, not to have a go at you, but because I find their campaign to be among the worst things the supporters of that club have ever done.

I'll say no more on that subject. I should warn you all though, that I am at home today, and if it rains, it will be a long day for you all.....:)

I think the main objective tonight is to be competitive.

After the last couple of visits to USA questions were asked by organisers about how seriously we took these games.

They accepted that we were there partly for conditioning work, but, mainly for the exposure and money.

If we look as though we are going through the motions for a third time we will find reduced terms next time.

Collie's fairly innocuous and only mildly potentially racist expression hardly deserves the head in the hands, gnashing of teeth and much worse we have heard over the past 24 hours.
To all of you righteous posters out there how many of you actually had heard the word Nig nog( hush ma mouth!!)before or at best since you were very young. How many of you knew what it meant. How many even noticed it.Many of you hear much worse at work, at school for those mortally wounded by the Mutt's utterance, and of course at that dear old green place Celtic park on a Saturday.

I don't see you all rushing into print then or shouting aloud at the game for the perpetrators to desist or you'll tell a steward.

Paul has made his decision( wee bit high handed I thought and a bit late) and that should have been enough to satisfy those offended by Collie's dastardly( see what I did there)outpouring.

Collie, if you read this, perhaps a small token of regret for any unintentional offence caused and a willing attempt to avoid any such wordsmith misinterpretations in the forseeable future or at least till next week when all will be forgoten and some other poor Chink, Paki, MIB, Pape, Fenian, DOB etc will be getting laldy for whatever offends the blogger of the moment.

    Celticlover,
Just read that article you posted. Their explination of the scotish mix of football and religion is infuriatingly over simplistic. And phrases like "for Protestans, Rangers are the only bet". Hardly a insightful view from them really. And I agree with you on the Boruc compariosn. I very much doubt a man who has sucsesfuly kept the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo, Kaka, Saha, and Boyd (spot the odd one out) for considerable periods of time, is inferior to a MLS keeper, even if he is their "All star". And with regards to the stadium, I fail to see how comparing a 26K seater stadium to the second bigest club owned stadium in the UK represetns an advantage to anyone.
Thanks for posting this. I love having soemthing to whhinge about

Previous visits to the USA have seen Celtic teams fail to generate either passion or panache, perhaps with one notable exception three years ago in the city of brotherly love.
Tonight however, I hope the trips to Switzerland and the South have enabled the team to gain match fitness and work out the short close season rustiness.
The midfield, from my brief views, seems to be in fine flow and form. They will be opposed by a collection of players who are well into their season and are obviously in peak form, otherwise they would not have been chosen to represent the best of MLS. This will prove a stern test for Brown and Donati and a good 45 minutes from both will augur well for the season ahead. Shalrie Joseph will be eager to retain Celtic’s interest in him and will relish the physical contact and contest with Brown.
The strikers have found the net, even the goal shy Miller, and I look forward to our midfielders pushing forward to create openings and supplement the
