Detail in Celtic Champions League earnings put show clear advantage over most

The disparity between Celtic’s earnings from the Champions League and clubs from England, Spain and Italy is disheartening, but the picture is more encouraging that it might first appear.

As well as appearance and performance money, clubs are paid a dividend from their national TV pot. Celtic earned €6.3m (£4.3m) from this source; compare this to Manchester United, who earned €16m.

Porto were eliminated at the same stage as Celtic but earned only €1.5m from the TV pot, Benfica, €900k, Dynamo Kiev €437k, CSKA Moscow €674k and poor Levski Sofia €164k.

On top of monies received from Uefa, clubs get to keep their home ticket money, which would push Celtic’s Champions League earnings close to the level achieved by Barcelona, Real Madrid and Lyon, who were also eliminated at the last 16 stage.

We might not be at the top table financially, but we are comfortably ahead of many regular Champions League combatants.

Our charity auction for the Stevie Chalmbers signed 40th anniversary Celtic top and Danny McGrain’s initialled training jacket have already reached fantastic levels. Many thanks to everyone who has participated.

I find myself at a total loss to understand it though I thought Tiny Tim got closest to helping me understand when he said

“I don't want to feel this way about him, but i do.

He just rub's me up the wrong way.”

I aplauded his honesty and can deal with that. I can even share the fact that he sometimes makes me cringe as also he makes me laugh but bottom line is he's always impressed me as extemely talented in football matters and to have achieved what he has done from the base MON left him with is nothing short of miraculous imo so I'll put up with my periodic cringe, my odd moans about some dire play and my shaking of the head at some decisions simply because I appreciate what he's brought so far and I firmly believe he will bring much better in terms of both style and winning ways.

That may be the essential difference between the two camps - simply a matter of trust and belief.

This being the case Paul we should expect last 16 at least most seasons then.

I've always thought that though, money or not. It's been the get out clause for too many Celtic managers over the years. If Porto and PSV for example can do well in european competition so should we.

Paul, apologies for continuing on from the last thread.

I hear what you are saying.

I have never been a proponent of moving to the EPL,as you well know.

As some independent finacial head said recently.

The amount of zeros are the same.

It is the percentages of expenditure that counts.

    Derbyshirebhoy,

that is what I feel is different.

Really, until the nineties we had no managers who had not been a former player, there is other "issues" with managers since then.

Now before anybody gets on with their "background" bit, hear me out.

The six non Celtic playing managers we have had, have been Liam Brady,Dr Jo,Wim Jansen,John Barnes,Martin O'Neill and Gordon Strachan.

There has been only one that most Celtic supporters genuinely disliked when they were players.

For me,Wim Jansen is the one I would dislike the most, for being part of a team that took away the European cup from us in the final.

But,because of the fact that he played for a Scottish team, who had no problem giving us a good going over, and frequently, being the main wee annoying instigator in most of those going overs,we cannot take to Gordon Strachan.

I know, believe it or not, what Tinytim is talking is about, when he says I don't know what it is,but he rubs me the wrong way.

The commentators in the press(and this includes sensible ones like Glen Gibbons),are guilty of confusing the "background" thing with being Irish or Catholic.

I happen to think the "background" thing is more to do with the wee sh*t taking the p**h out of us in the eighties.

At least.I fervently hope that is the case, unconsciously or otherwise,I fear for the wee man's future.

Don't get me wrong,I do not believe he is any Stein or Shankly, yet.

But given the backing,do we feel that the chance is not there?

    Or could he be?

And I really love the way he treats the "press".

With no more contempt than they deserve.

The difference between us and Porto or PSV is the work permit laws, or in short, Brazilians!

There's so much talent available in countries like Brazil (and various countries in Africa and South America) that we cannot tap into. PL seems like he is trying to get some exceptions in the laws but it really is a disadvantage.

  • At 12/07/07 14:00, malone_86_ said…

And then you've got the Dutch and probably Portugese youth systems which we in Scotland are years, decades even, behind.

  • At 12/07/07 14:00, itz said…

As I understand it there is only one champions league slot available next season, so will we retain the SPL championship so we can keep the fod skint and we get richer?

Is Walter building a big physical MON type team so he can bully us around like in the nine in a row days?

To me the key man here is JVOH. Is he gonna be the striker we hope he is or will he get pushed around like in his last couple of games against the fod?

What about Scott MacDonald - where does he fit in? Chris Killen - any chance? Tommy G - how will that end? John Kennedy - will he get back in the team?

Will we get off to a flyer in the SPL and qualify for the CL proper?

Wee Gordon - will he continue his one man demolition campaign against the interviewers or will he start being nice to them?

Canny wait for the season to start, if Celtic was a soap opera it would be best in class and win all the prizes.

  • At 12/07/07 14:03, Paul67 said…

Ardoch, PSV were a different case last year. As they were the only Dutch team, their TV pot income was €19m.

This would normally be shared with other Dutch clubs.

    Rev Davie, who knows?

itz, your understanding is incorrect, Scotland will have 2 CL spots next season and will most probably have an automatic qualifier.

I think the difference in countries like Holland amd Portugal is two fold. Firstly they produce young players with the basic skills of the game learned from a young age. Like controlling a pass, being able to play a pass with both feet, etc. The kind of thing that few 16 or 17 year olds seem to learn over here. Or indeed that many seasened pros never learn.

Secondly they gradually introduce young players to first team football at an early age. And the fans don't seem to get on their backs the way we have a bad habit of doing, or expect miracles right away. Instead, they allow younger players to concentrate on the basics and gradually build up their confidence.

But I've never worked out why we can't mirror the sort of youth set up that Ajax and others have had for so many years.

The Forces of Darkness are obviously accummulating a physical team for the season ahead & whilst players like Kirk Broadfoot & Lee McCulloch are hardly of the calibre of a Mario Kempes or Franco Baresi, they will definetley make it hard for us.

Strachan's philosophy is all about high tempo football, however we will need a few more quality recruits & be generally smarter if it's to be three in a row.

My main concern is that we are building a forward line around a guy who doesn't look up to it - JVOH

    Bring back Jorge Cadete CSC

Paul I sympathise with your scheduling issues with golf.

About 2 weeks after my first daughter was born (12 years ago this weekend) I went for a game of golf with my brother and a few friends. It took us about 4 hours for 18 holes but the 19th was a killer. I got home 12 hours late.

I've only managed about another 6 games since and I'm always home early :-)
Golfers and dinner guests enjoy the day and good luck with the auctions. Afraid the bidding now way outstrips my disposable income but good luck and big well done to those who can afford.

Be back lurking in a week.....Hail Hail.

PS The content has been great these past few weeks, but I can't wait until the serious stuff get going and we can really see where we are.

Take your point but I reckon that for now its all about winning the league to (almost) guarantee entry to the competition group stages year on year. That means we will become financially stronger and more attractive to new and existing players in which case the rest will take care of itself. At the moment there is no other priority than winning the league. All else wil be thrills and a bonus along the way to the next Lisbon.

  • At 12/07/07 15:43, itz said…

Fair comment derbyshirebhoy, would love to see us have a real go at getting way beyond the group stages though, but I dont think we can do that and maintain domestic dominance.

What has me a little puzzled though is the 2 CL places up for grabs. If that were a permanent circumstance then maybe we could
one time just go for it, assuming of course we were confident of getting 1 of the 2 CL places up for grabs.

  • At 12/07/07 15:46, VargasShampoo said…

Danny - i too thought we only needed new recruits for our CL assault, but when you reflect on the last 2 Old Firm games of last season, we were second best in many areas of the park.

JVOH was marked out of the game by David Weir

McGeady was nulled by Alan Hutton

Hartley was bossed around by Charlie Adam

They are going to come at us next season screaming & biting & we'll need to ensure that we have players in key positions who can hurt them & have the mental strength to win the one to one battles.

I don't want to mention names but there are at least 7 players not up to it.

Anyway- hopefully we're close to news of a new arrival that will make us all aPPy

    AT 10.32 Kitalba said........

What do you know about Coventry?...

Not much. just born here, work here, live just outside.. Used to play for the Rugby Team at Coundon Road....

When WGS signed I was most vocal in my opposition to him, predicted the signing of Telfer that very day in fact. Probably gave Paul and others eyeache with ny whinging.

The problem that most Cov fans have with Gordon (my mates, wife, colleagues, boss etc), is the fact he made promises and didn't keep them (e.g. he'd stay after they got relegated but in fact jumped at the first opportunity as he left the Board with little choice but to sack him with his attitude).

His teams, which he spent a fortune on, were really not very good. Full of very skillful players, but incapable of playing with any consistency as a team. He did spend a lot of money, bringing in 60 odd players during his time as Boss, while moving on over 50.

Some Cov fans argue that some of their present problems stem from the poor players on massive wages, they were saddled with after they went down that Gordon had bought. The likes of Marcus Hall and Mark Edworthy for example. These couldn't be moved on while on massive premiership wages, leaving them in a financial hole (which they are still suffering from) The days of signing £6m players are long gone from the present Cov fans minds. Although he made a net profit from the transfers over all, when wages were fitted into the equation he left Cov over £30m in debt.

When Cov went down, I cheered like mad (as you would being a Celtic fan growing up down here, often seeing the split Cov/Rangers Beanie hats on sale about the place). Remember Dave Phillips wearing one on the Victory Bus Tour around the City, the day after they won the Cup in 1987.

When we lost to Cov in that 'friendly' last year, I would have been arrested if I could lay my hands on Gordon that night. 31 years I had waited for that - it still hurts.

The Benfica link - what about it? They have had the Beast and Svengerland as managers in the past. Neither regarded as being among the best at present in their field.

Similar to the Liverpool link, he may well have been interviewed but I can't see the Kop ever accepting an ex-Man U player as boss. Would we ever accept an ex-Rangers player as boss - I hope not.

My point is this - Gordon has done all that he has been asked to do on paper, won trophies and spent less money etc. However as much as I am greatful for this, equally I cannot change my opinion that a proportion of this is down to envionmental circumstances in addition to the work put in by Gordon and his team due to the complete and utter retreat of the big and mini FOD.

Sorry for not being among the concensus but like others that is my honest opinion and before some may say it, no I wanted MON to move on as well. His inability to use subs was my biggest issue with him and Black Sunday still hurts. I just felt and to a lesser extent than I did, still do, that there was better out there at the time. What had WGS done to suggest he deserved IMO, the greatest job in football? Just being honest.

Hope those attending Aberdour enjoy themselves and I will keep an eye out for Estadio's Jersey at both London Rd and Loftus Rd this weekend. WIll say hello if I see it on the terrace tomorrow night (unless you are in the posh seats?).

    All the best

    Hailhail

Antsman, I have not heard specifics on reducing the squad size, though I do know they want to shed specific players.

Jsm69, I will insist that no business is done until your return.

Baldymeister, Gordon “jumped ship” at Coventry by getting sacked!

“His teams, which he spent a fortune on”, “although he made a net profit from the transfers”!

I do indeed remember your comments when Gordon became manager, you were totally and utterly convinced he would lose the league.

I also remember your comments last close season, you were similarly convince the Le Guen revolution would put him in his place.

You were wrong. Time to reassess the information that led you to your conclusions (and read over the comments I have selected above).

Enjoy tomorrow night. If we win, I hope we hear from you about how important it is to win a friendly, because you reaction when we lost one a year ago still lingers in the memory!

I love it too... but I do not believe that he treats them with the contempt they deserve...More the 'patience' they deserve.

But Hey....Who knows.. Maybe GS harbors a little negativity towards the central belt dominated media from his days in Aberdeen.... Would not surprise me if, to paraphrase tinytim, they rub him up the wrong way too...

    09.00-12.00,sunny intervals.
    12.00pm-15.00,cloudy.
    15.00-18.00,slight chance of a shower.
    18.00,onwards rain.
so hopefully, as the last match should get in about 18.00 it'll be a fine day for the golf to-morrow.

From the last blog. You came up with prices for individual players,is there going to be a bookie at Aberdour, would'nt mind a bet on someone, although theres not much form to go on.

I believe, what you are failing in is the most basic of concepts.

    Time management.

If you manage your time so well, that you end up with no time to play golf, maybe a wee course in time management is required.

A/ Spend less time on everything other than your family

B/ Spend more time on golf.

Believe me,instead of enjoying it,you will be made aware that you have stolen the game from decent people!

*just listening tae the punters on the ould Vale of Leven and Renton CSC busses which my da used tae take me on, they were definately NOT Bob friendly which is quite surprising since the Kellys originated in the renton and the Fountain Bar oot the Vale which James owned weeks after signing for Celtic while still serving his time as a joiner. James Edward was looked upon with sympathy as he was reckoned to be too have too much respect for the Chairman of the club.

Adu has been excellent at the U20 World Cup, although his performance in the game last night was a bit poorer.

His record in MLS seems to be going downhill as well. He stormed onto the scene in 2004 scorng 5 goals in 14 starts (plus 16 as a sub), 2005 he scored 1 less, 2006 he scored only 2 goals in 29 starts. This season has seen him score 1 in 11 starts.

Watching the video of Freddie Adu reminded me of the recurring flaw in David Marshall's game.

He seemed to have difficulty in judging the pace of the ball from distance.

I first noticed this in a pre season friendly against Feyenoord. I think it may have been his first game. Anyway, he was beaten from about 35 yards by PVH.
Many keepers have been beaten by the big man and allowing for the fact that he was stepping up in pace, allowances had to be made for the boy.

However, he continued to misjudge pace, distance and angles throughout his spell at the club and were it not for the fact that it would be obvious to the coaching staff, I suspected that he has a problem with his vision. All his good work was done from close range. Just a thought.

Enjoy the golf and nae fightin'.

All the best for the golf day, wish i could be there.

My take on Gordon Strachan is that he was the right man for the job and he has pulled it off in his first two seasons.

    1 Gordon and the players

The least we know about this the better. It only matters what goes on on the pitch.

    2 Gordon and the media

The least he has to speak to them the better.

    3 Gordon and the fans

Gordon has to do a lot of catch-up here, he cannot know the ins and outs of the club. Cruyff only won the league with Barça in his third season there and Fergie at Man U took even longer. This season it will be all about displays rather than results. With our hegemony in place we need to turn on the style. However other teams, the referees and the SFA will have something to say about that

4 Gordon and the rest of the teams in Scotland

Gordon is fairly unique here as he has close links with Hibs, Aberdeen and Celtic. The three best Scottish football teams ever. He will always be "up" for a game against Hearts and he will understand the importance of getting results against Rangers
(The wins against Rangers were his salvation in his precarious first season)

    5. Gordon and CQN posters

This forum has generally given Strachan the benefit of the doubt
but will rightly continue to question who he plays at right or left back.

    6 Gordon and MON

Following a legend is not easy and comparisons are odious. We may not be getting that much out of Jiri or Thomas but how much did we get out of David Fernandez? And did we hold that against Martin?

    7 Gordon and Europe

Without Naka at full fitness we will struggle to make it through to the Champions league group stage.

    8 VENUS WILLIAMS

I was absolutely furious that Venus was seeded 23 at Wimbledon even though she had won the championship three times previously and is still only 27 years old. Wimbledon had always paradoxically seeded its own winners higher than official seedings, why the difference with Venus? Mmmmm.
But I was deeeelighted that she won so handsomely and picked up her prize money. The tepid response from the Wimblebores in the Centre Court to her tremendous play against her opponent in the final was evidence that if you are brilliant it is not necessarily recognised by society.

    9 Gordon and the future.

Strachan does not have to please everyone in society, only the Celtic family and true football fans. My favourite quote from him, which was in an interview I saw on the web and his most poignant in my opinion, was

" Celtic fans are in love with their team "

If he understands that then he is halfway there. He has to nurture that love.

    10 rimtimtim and the future

In my last post I wrongly stated that our next match was against QPR not Peterborough. I was smarting from the 4-1 loss and not thinking straight.

    Write twenty times!!

    Peterborough,

    Peterborough...

To be honest, I though twice about posting that link but then I figured that if I didn't then somebody else (probably Noel) would. If the guy does end up signing for us I wouldn't want it to look as if I had a downer on him before he even kicked a ball.

In a way the fact he looked so bad made me think that it must have been a one-off - he couldn't possibly be as bad as that & make a career for himself in Serie A.

    Could he?

Zbyszek - Freddy is contracted to the MLS until the end of the current season, with MLS having the option to extend it for another 2 years. Good evening Zbyszek.

Keep smiling and keep that flame burning for your club. The more that your voices are heard, the more pathetic will be those who use the club as excuse for violence and mayhem.

They will fade away and decay in their own manure.

Anyway, when I was over in Poland you looked a bit taken aback about the area where I had booked my hotel.

Believe me at the outrageous price of 17 Euros per night, the Felix hotel with its on suite rooms, outdoor bars, barbecues every night and free internet access was better value than anywhere else I have been.

The area itself was a little like 1980s Beirut on a bad night, but so what, the people were great and when you come over here I'll show you some comparable areas of Glasgow, but only in daylight!

I'm off to Peterborough and London tomorrow for a couple of games, but I doubt if the atmosphere generated will come anywhere near that of the Legia fans (or even the Krakow fans).

I WILL get back one day.

I was puzzled by the whole affair at the time & couldn't understand why my parents didn't attempt to lamp the intruder, but the scuffed Adidas Samba & Celtic CR Smith top maybe gave the game away.

Anyway i'm a lot braver now, though i don't know if i could stomach Bobo Balde playing a one two with Adam Virgo at Ibrox

Also - I see that our good friend 'Vinnie The Dog' is back on CQN. I was thinking to myself maybe his wee bundle of joy will have mellowed The Dug, but i'm no so sure. It's a pity Vinnie because you do on occasion make sensible points about the tic, but why they're laced with such aggression is a puzzle.
