Has the Herald and it's Sunday Sister went downhill in recent months or what?
Two live stories just now:-
1. Rigters opts for Blackburn instead of Celtic
(No mention of Rankers' interest in the player despite reporting such on 30th June? Wonder why.)
2.Rankers confident over deal for Cuellar.
One negative.
One positive.
It's fun these days. The headline writers are scraping the barrel for scraps that fit their jigsaw bhoys and ghirls.

Cash-strapped crisis club Celtic have been humiliated once more this summer as their top-striking target Maceo Rigters opted to sign for Blackburn Rovers. Gordon Strachan and Peter Lawwell were left with egg on their faces after staking their reputations on the signing of the Dutch hitman. The transfer window torment of the long-suffering Celtic support continues, with reports of season ticket cards being returned in their thousands.
In other news, Rangers FC have confirmed they ‘will not be held to ransom’ by Scottish Power, after receiving an electricity bill for £245. An Ibrox powerbroker raged: “We value the electricity we have used at £16.90, and we won’t pay a penny more”. Scottish Power are left with little choice but to meet the Rangers’ valuation, as both Gary McAllister and Alex ‘Big Eck’ McLeish have waded into the argument, and are in total agreement with the Ibrox offer.

Mr Strachan's signing policy concerns me.
My view is that he should be signing players to fit his system.Granted he may wish to change systems during matches.A horses for courses, type of adaptability makes sense.
Just where does Rigters fit in with this?
One month ago we had never heard of him.
He has a good euro under 21 championship, and suddenly he is a legitimate signing target for us.
I did not see the boy in person ,but like, Vargas Shampoo my brother in law watched the lad and thought that he lacked pace, movement, and fight.
On checking his goal scoring record,it is very poor for a supposed goal scorer.
This leads me to ask the question.
When did Mr Strachan decide that the boy was what Celtic needed?
There seem to have been so many instances where we go after one type of player, don't get him and the next player we sign is a totally different type.
Last year it was Jimmy Floyd Hasslebank .(What another waste of money he would have been)
Last year we went after Quinton Fortune,a player with a fitness record to match that of Phil O'Donnell and Craig Beattie combined.(What another waste of money that would have been)
We then go on to sign JVOH and JJ who are totally different types to our earlier targets.
Is the man flying by the seat of his pants?
It seems so to me.
He has wasted millions on players,he has to get it right.
He seems to be going after anyone who fits his budget, instead of getting the right man for a certain role.
We need less squad players, and more players who can make a difference.
He is giving The Waistcoat, hope tha he shouldn't have by wasting millions on players who have been signed , yet he doesn't know (or if he does ) doesn't play them in there best position's.
JJ,TG,Adam Virgo ,Paul Hartley,Gary Caldwell, all spring to mind.
Kenny Miller is also not an out and out striker. He has had more effect, when playing out wide.
No i'm sorry but with the gap in funds avaiable to him.The Darnel should not be in the race.
That will not be the case.
There are many crawing on here, but i believe that The Waistcoat, has done better with the resources available to him, than Mr Strachan has.
-
Mr Strachan doesn't seem to like goal scorers. He takes them and within a year they dry up. Kenny Miller got a great run though because he doesn't score goals. Magic scored a bunch in his first season but that dried up. I believe Hartley used to bang in a few too. Riorden was just scoring too easy so he had to be kept out. Having scored about 60 in the previous 3 seasons combined, Mr Strachan just couldn't take the chance that he'd score some for Celtic.
As for the collosal Celtic squad these days with (soon to be)triple digits on their backs, they must be eating up a huge wage packet.
As a follower of celtic I must say that it's a bit hard to get behind a huge squad of players who come and go. Maybe that's just me. Seems every week when the team comes out, there's a half a team that didn't play the week before.
But is Mr Strachan winging it? At times I say yes. Definately. Is he looking at Celtic as top of the league or 12th from bottom?
I'm probably repeating myself but it would be great to see consistency from Mr Strachan and a little all round adventure on the pitch. Still, I wish him all the best.
-
Jeez, Tiny....I wish I had got 10 or 12 pints into you...you'd maybe a wee bit more upbeat....:)
I do agree that we seem to have too many squad players, and not enough really top guys.
That being said, we are getting some trickle down dosh from england, and could end up having 5 or 6 million added to the kitty. So who knows?
I'd give gordon and Peter the benefit of the doubt. I think they have earned it.

YET ANOTHER SIGNING
Gordon Strachan has added Dunfermline's Stevie Woods to his goalkeeping coaching staff.
The 37-year-old ex-Hibs and Motherwell No.1 has been recruited to work with Jim Blyth at the club's new £7million Lennoxtown training complex.
Woods was out of contract at East End Park and has taken the chance to look after Artur Boruc and Mark Brown at Celtic.
Pars manager Stephen Kenny is sad to see Woods depart after helping develop young Fife keepers Greg Paterson and Sean Murdoch but will now target a replacement.
The Irishman, who hopes winger Owen Morrison agrees a new contract, said: "Stevie was very professional in everything he did with us and we wish him well."

A slightly different take on the Rigters story from the Express -
CELTIC manager Gordon Strachan dropped his interest in Dutch under-21 starlet Maceo Rigters last night - hours before he led his team - under tight security - to their Swiss training camp.
The Scottish champions had expressed an interest in NAC Breda youngster Rigters but have now decided that they need a more experienced blue chip striker for the Champions League - with Swiss star Alexander Frei still on the radar despite Borussia Dortmund claiming he is not for sale.
Rigters had come to the Hoops attention, via director of football John Park, after he had finished top scorer at last month’s under-21 European Championships but Strachan does not see the player as any better than any of his current striking options - including Maciej Zurawski, Chris Killen, Scott McDonald, Kenny Miller, Derek Riordan and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.
The Dutchman is now likely to move to England where Norwich and Blackburn are both keen to secure his services. Meanwhile, Celtic continued their pre-season when they flew out to Switzerland, after switching to Prestwick from Glasgow airport after the weekend terrorist attacks.
Strachan is still planning for the new season and is prepared to bide his time to get the top targets he wants. Strachan still wants to add more firepower to his squad but before he can do that he must try to move on some of his top earners - including Thomas Gravesen, Jiri Jarosik and Bobo Balde.
He is still looking to add to his squad with another goalkeeper to replace Norwich-bound David Marshall a priority, along with another full back to replace Jean Perrier Doumbe, who has pulled out of contract talks and is set to return to France with St Etienne, although there is also interest from England.
The Hoops are also looking for another midfielder and after pulling out of a move for Stephen Appiah and they have left their £3 million bid on the table for Guiranne N’Daw - even though Sochaux are adamant they won’t sell.
N’Daw’s UK representative, David Baldwin, said: “Celtic have made an offer for the player but at this time Sochaux have said they don’t want to do business.
“Celtic have offered what is a fair price for Guiranne, who I am in no doubt will go on to become a really top player.
“Sochaux have turned down that offer and said they aren’t going to sell and so it looks like the deal has reached some of an impasse.
“Guiranne knows that an opportunity like this doesn’t come along too often and he has told Sochaux he wants to go but he is still under contract and there is nothing he can do.
“It is just a case of waiting to see if Sochaux will have a change of heart, because Celtic have made it clear they are willing to leave their offer on the table.”

The Celtic View couldn't have topped that - hope it is true.
-
Tinytim,
WGS was interested in Rigters BEFORE the U21s (at least it was in the redtops and he was being discussed on here before the Euro championships), so he wasn't interested just because he scored a few goals in the tournament, he was intersted because Celtic's scouting network informed him of the lad.
Personally I didn't see much that impressed me, but I never got the job!
-
Morning Guys
Just following up a point made by Tiny last night about the waistcoat. Why wouldn't you think that Rangers can provide a credible challenge this year?
Yes our budget is far larger than Rangers but then their's is far larger than everyone elses. In truth, both McLeish and PLG should have been hoovering up points all season given the resource advantage they have over the rest of the league. The fact that they did not showed their failings as coaches.
Smith was a good fit for Rangers this time around as his experience with both Everton and Scotland has taught him how to stretch a buck so to speak. Factor in two old firm victories last season then yes, i do expect a serious challenge from the dark side this year.
As for Mr Strachan's signing policy, I think you are right to criticise as his scatter gun approach has not been entirely successful. The pro's perhaps just about outweigh the cons but I am happy that he is at least generating some money through player sales.

Good job this didn't happen on the Celtic website:
"Everton's official website had the club's fans in raptures after announcing the signature of Argentine superstar Juan Roman Riquelme, ony for disappointment to hammer home when it was revealed the story was untrue and had been part of some test data which had been displayed in error."

I see the Telegraph seems to think John Reid is to be our new Chairman. While I don't think our current Chairman should be shown the door, I wouldn't really want Reid to take his place. Those who find us unacceptable will never change and it is not because of the IRA.

Donald Findlay cleared of offensive Joke.
In a landmark ruling yesterday, the Faculty of Advocates - the professional body which governs the sash size, trouser length and hand-shaking etiquette for Scotland's courtroom lawyers - concluded their judgement of Mr Findlay on a charge of professional misconduct.
In a surprise outcome, the tribunal agreed that the case was proven and that the offensive joke must be cleared with immediate effect.
To this end, Mr Findlay whose plea of insanity was rejected as immaterial to his case, immediately had his whiskers removed, one follicle at a time with rusty tweezers.
In keeping with the principle of 'justice being seen to be done', the coven of old salivating perverts on the bench watched each painful tug, listened to every painful squeal, and rolled their eyes in tongue biting ecstasy.
Asked, after the sentence had been carried out, how he felt, Mr Findlay admitted to 'oddly enjoying the experience in a sort of public school and broomstick sort of way.'.
His partner, longingly admiring the now chinless wonder said simply that the new hirsute-less suitor now looked days younger'!
She also did however suggest that the judges were no animal lovers and that the now offensive-jokeless-bare-upper-lip would probably frighten the dogs (or possibly attract them since he looked like an ovulating shitzu)!
They then swaggeringly marched out of court, sashying left and right, while tunelessly singing along to 'Donald where's your whiskers'!
Hail hail

Yes, the very same Trinity, excellent book.
Opinions.....opinions...... I loved it. Read it in late 70's, there certainly weren't many books of it's sort out then. Good fiction based on fact in my opinion.
Think the fact it was rugby league was due to a team brought over from north England......I agree rugby union would certainly have made more sense.......think the point was the infiltration of a garrison sport by the bold Conor.
Heinrich Böll - need to find out more about him....but I'll give him a whirl.
-
Good man Tully.
Old Heinrich was instrumental in forcing the German nation to face up to what had happened to it in the build-up to WWII and during the war.
His books (certainly the early ones) are much softer, more human, more romantic than those of Günter Grass, who took up the mantle and is probably more famous, although Böll won the Nobel prize decades before Grass.
I love the following titles:
The Bread of Those Early Years
And Never Said A Word and, especially,
The Clown.

I was watching the Celtic v Motherwell 2-1 game fom Fir Park, October 1998 last night on Celtic TV, and Stevie Woods was in goal for them.
As for WG's disdain of all things Murderwell, their fans booed Henke for being injured, then chanted 'scum scum scum' at him until he was carried off. Charming!
Also noticed from that game that we could be doing with a player similar to Marc Reiper in out central defence. Always calm, strong and could find a midfield player with his passing.

A very decent bit of business for Craig Beattie I'd guess - makes you wonder what Kenny Miller might be worth if he goes.
If the rumours are true that David Marshall is off soon then again that will be a good piece of business for the club whilst it will be a welcome opportunity for David to regain some confidence and perhaps re-establish himself as a candidate for the natonal side longer term.
Whatever the outcomes I wish both well. With Mr Beattie if stars were made from effort alone there would have been no stopping him.

Correct.
I travel to Celtic Park with Roger.
*I was at school with him, first year, Nicky tae same class he was a late developer, then Roger took off tae Blairs tae become a priest.
Came back when we were in 3rd year, everybody was a bit tentative around him, nae swearing durty jokes etc. Around this time the Miss World competition was on and the winner was an English lassie cannae remember her name but she had a cameo in "A Hard Day's Night", anyway as she's getting crowned her top came loose and you could see her strawberry ripples, my da was off the chair like a shot trying tae turn it off in case we got corrupted. The next day we were walking round the back of the school close tae the science labs and talking about it when Roger comes running along tae join us, cue for everyone tae shut up, first thing Roger says is "anyone see the Miss World last night", God it was like confessions there was a mumbled "aye", "did you see the threepenny bits on her" he said, after that Roger wisnae a priest anymore.
Saw him a few year
