    Right Gents,

I'm off to the land of the rising sun this weekend, and have one day of work to go, so i'll have to be giving this game a miss.

Michael__67, if you're staying up to watch it, i'll speak to you 2mrw morn for an in-depth update.

Noel90, if you're still up, to provide some light entertainment for the late-night brethren, i would suggest a link to Alan Partridge's USA94 world cup updates might be a relevant touch

C'mon the Hoops.....let's have a few touchdowns into their goalbag earl in the first quarter

I'd like to see us start with our strongest lineup , includes Capone , to have a proper look at him.

Kenny Miller to Partner JVOH , I think these yanks will leave plenty of space in behind.

Good shout about Capone...forgot about him!

I would probably drop Teddy B and slip Capone in the center and push scott brown out wide right, he's played there for hibs so would be interesting to see although in the long term i would prefer his 'Dig' in the middle.

I expect a tough game tonight.

we may have treated last year's games in America as training sessions when we lost at least one game heavily but I think we have to treat tonight's with a bit more respect to avoid a similar fate.

i was listening to an interview with Steve Morrow(used to play with arsenal). He is currently head coach for Dallas i think. the interviewer questioned him about the standard of American soccer and suggested that it would perhaps be Championship standard but Morrow replied that most of the teams could survive in the premiership if they could play their first 11.

Considering we are playing against what is generaaly accepted as the best players in the league I hope we don't treat the game lightly. I expect that we will put out a strong side and not have the wholesale changes that may disrupt our shape unless the heat and humidity forces the manager's hand.

    Dziekanowskis...

Not often I agree with someone wholeheartedly but the eleven you have gone with is certainly what I'd like to see for the first 45 at least...

    Michael,

I was gonna respond in your absence to confirm our strongest XI.

In saying that, i'd start Darren O'Dea ahead of big Mick

  • At 20/07/07 01:00, Michael__67 said…

What a goal for Argies U20...

    Lefty

Id rather see O'Dea than McManus, but Strachan has showed through his pre season selection so far that O'Dea doesnt look an immediate pick for starting x1 at the moment. If that is the case id rather get Balde and McManus together and give them a test tonight...

Id like to see O'Dea, Killen, Capone, and Jarosik also make an appeareance tonight...

  • At 20/07/07 01:03, dziekanowskis_dazzlers said…

Kingoh, I also expect a tough game not only because the MLS season is already half way through but also that the heat/humidity and altitude will take it's toll especially against players who are more likely to be more used to the climate than ours will be. Also the MLS league is generally being given good credit regarding its standard everywhere you read about it. It's also interesting to note the coverage we are getting through it in comparison to previous years.

M_67: i think GS will change it about after 45 or at the latest 60 due to the climate...but then again what do i know i am but a mere observer! lol

i think it will be a hard fought game with only a goal between the sides

    Evening/morning all,

What a pleasure to be able to sit in front of the tv, drink a beer or 3 and watch the bhoys live. Usually it's up at the crack of dawn to watch the game before breakfast on the PC via C67.

Looking forward to the game. I think it is an 8pm kick-off which will means the program starts just as the ball is kicked off. Had it been NFL there would be a 3 hour pre-game show.

Still, not complaining at all. Just heard some Lacrosse commentator say that the Scottish Champions Celtic are up next against the MLS all-stars. That's not something you hear very often.

Jarosik is off the pace and losing the ball a lot!

Brown out of position, he is a central midfielder that we are not seeing the best of him, why ae we accommodating hartley, he has not won a midfield battle since he joined!

Scott Brown, Massimo and JVOH pretty anonymous. Hartley, Wilson and Pressley poor. Artur our only player. It is only a friendly but individual deficiencies are found out in whatever game - namely for Hartley (not imposing himself on a game), Wilson (looks out of his depth) and Pressley (behind the pace). We have cover, but we need full-back cover. JVOH seems to need a wide-player.

Right hand side of defence continually caught out - middle of defence sleeping at first goal - middle of park sleeping for whole of first half - we can look at the high-altitude environment and the fact that the MLS are in mid-season compares to our pre-season, but 1 attempt on goal in the first half pretty much sums up, an inept performance.

Ouch. Half time. Down 0-2...and taking a beating. If we don't sort things out this could end up a 3 or 4 goal loss.

First 15 min seemed ok as both teams played cautiously. They upped a gear. We didn't.

Our mid 4 are all central midfielders. They are too flat. The MLS players are getting the ball between the back 4 and the mid 4...yes, where Lenny used to be...and they are running at Pressley. Trust me, it's not a pretty sight. Can't imagine he'll be back out for the 2nd half. If he is, he'll get sent off.

We had one shot that hit the post...which espn didn't bother to replay.

Apart from Boruc, no-one is playing. We need Donati to sit back a bit to protect the 'hole', and we need someone to push on and support the strikers.

jarosik looks like he's playing for them.

Apart from that, everything is fine....:(

    HT MLS 2-0 Celtic

OK - I know it is a pre-season friendly but we are being outclassed. We have got to do better in these games if we are to enhance the name of our club overseas. It is dissappointing for me to see Pressley and Hartley still wearing the hoops for the new season. I thought I understood why they were bought last season but expected them to be moved on already. Pressley is a shadow of the Hearts player he was 5 years ago. Hartley is out of his depth.

The MLS team are a yard quicker - I guess that is to be expected at this stage of their season. Scores on the doors...

Boruc - 8 - Two or 3 great saves including the penalty. Not a chance with the goals
    Wilson - 3 - poor poor poor
    Mick - 5 - trying hard
Pressley - 2 worse than Wilson
    Naylor - 6 - looks steady
Jiri - 6 - trying hard and making good use of the ball
Brown - 5 - not really in the game after first 15 mins
Donati - 6 - looks comfortable on the ball but hasn't created much going forward
Hartley - picked up where he left off last season
    JVoH - 5 - no service
McDonald - 5 - looks like he could be pretty useful.

Hopefully we don't embarrass ourselves in the second half. I'm on the fence about driving down to Chicago Sunday - a good second half show could convince me to make the long trip....

To me it seems brown is drifting out right a lot of the time.

Bad idea to play with no out ball like mcgeady.

Dont think donati has done much wrong, everytime he gets the ball no one is moving for him, him and brown need to be working together, hartley and jarosik need to smarten up and pressley and mcmanuis are embarassing

Back with C67 after a 2 year break and am impressed with the quality.....much improved. Only problem I have is Tony Hamilton, his bias is uncomfortable to listen to,he reckons we are unlucky to be 2 down!!!!!

Couldn't believe I was going to watch Pressley and Jarosik. Both have been so poor and do not have a future with The Hoops. Difficult to pick a Celtic player who has impressed apart from Artur (although even he made a mess of it prior to the penalty). JVOH continues to worry me and Magic or Killen shopuld be given a run out.

    McGeady must come on

  • At 20/07/07 03:36, Estadio said…

Surely that just confirmed what we all knew/suggested/suspected.

Jiri gives the ball away when the whole midfield is up with him, leaving the grand canyon for MLs to flood forward into.

Fast Mobile Centre backs might help but eventually we would be punished for Press's inability to....well inability will do!

Having said that Mark Wilson is nowhere near fit and needs to get either very tight or drop further off. At the moment he is getting turned and beaten for pace, pulling our middle out of position.

Massimo (who started really well) and Scott B are I think genuinely trying to pace themselves.

Apart from one shot we achieved little up front.

Paul H still needs a rest.

    So where do we go?

Our only option in the middle at the back is Bobo but we need more pace there. Gordon must be thinking of the game on Sunday.

Get Aiden on in place of Jiri and a Deek for PH.

We need to put them on the back foot and get them worried about us. We are defending far too deeply with far too many players trailing in their attacks wake.

At the moment their defence is not being tested.

If none of that works, then maybe JVOH needs to come off and Magic go on.

Given all of that, I haven't a clue what it is like for players to play in the altitude and humidity that is rarely experienced.

Anyway 45 mins and 3 goals.

If any team can do it then.....and we've always got Tommy to confuse the hell out of them!

    Hail hail

Paul alluded to the fact that we might see a more formal tactical approach to the game. God help us if that was true. The team had no shape whatsoever.

    Defensive recruits required now.No excuses.

Well that was like watching a slow motion accident in reverse.

    Boruc saved our blushes.

Aiden was a breath of fresh air....

JJ left us backpedalling too often after easily losing possession going forward.

    Scott McDonald looked promising.

I was looking forward to seeing our new midfield but it didn't show up.

Jiri at least showed some football intelligence and vision. His execution let him down and caused us problems when they broke.

I can see some other clubs showing an interest in him.

With SP and TG the word 'execution' also figuratively came to mind but that was because I can't see anyone wanting to take the plunge and recruit them, although I think that TG must have a very persuasive agent.

The biggest issue for me was our inability to adapt to the conditions and retain simple possession.

When MLS built attacks and we defended as a unit I never felt unduly concerned unless MW was caught in a 1-1.

However when we attacked we would invariably surrender cheap possession and not be able to recover.

While fitness is a major factor in the conditions in which we were playing, the best players are able to use the sharpness of their brains and there is usually someone on the field who is snarling at them to play to the conditions.

I don't think we have found our captain yet!

I think that SB and MD did adapt but we never really adapted as a team.

That left them in no man's land as players who had run off into the distance couldn't get back leaving us with 2 vs 4!

The second half was inevitably better but when a team is firing on maybe 4 out of 8 cylinders, engine seizure is inevitable.

All the above are observations and opinions, NOT judgements!

Strangely enough the above wittering also contains some real positives.

Our desire to get forward will pay massive dividends in the coming season, especially as the profligacy will be strangled out of the team.

The shop window will probably have served its purpose for a few of the 'thanks and goodbye' players.

But most of all, and I think that we will all see a massive difference on Sunday, the players who were notable by their absence, Darren, Teddy, JFK will hopefully be involved; and Magic will reestablish himself as a main front runner and goalscorer.

So being a 'cup three-quarters full' and a 'can almost empty' sort of person, I am now looking forward to firstly draining my final dregs of Guinness, a long lie in till the pressure of my bladder forces me to get up, and the build up to the Chicago game.

Goodnight/morning to everyone who was and is still here.

While I accept that the altitude and conditions, hot, humid and slippery underfoot, were difficult, I was disappointed by the lack of combatative competition for possession.

Even in the first half when we were fresh we were losing out in 50 50 balls and second best in tackles.
Hesitancy caused the second goal and lack of pace and commitment caused the first.
That early on we should have had the heart and lungs to match them head to head.
The fact is only Arthur's heroics saved our blushes.

BB's entry may be a positive aspect, so hopefully he will make a start on Sunday.
We lack someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Brown would have been my man to do that but tonight raised a few doubts in my mind. I hope he doesn't become another Hartley.

Watched the game without commentary. (watched it in the home of the Brisbane RFC)
It was obvious though who the star of the show was. One David Beckham. Thank god his missus wasn’t present.

I only have Setanta normally here in Oz and on that production I‘ll take that before American style coverage any day.

To the game, well we got what we deserved. Nowt.

I’m not too concerned by the result but I was a little disappointed for the viewing Americans. Surely they expected better. I did.

I’ve always been a vocal supporter of Gordon Stachan and as long as he remains the manager of Celtic Football Club, I will remain so.
But Gordon, we are so one dimensional at the moment. We are so predictable and devoid of invention, sometimes I cringe. We have the players of proven ability. It is your job to sort out formation and game plan. Too often we have ten men behind the ball. The forward pass is not an option.
I understand that a full bodied tackle has inherent risks and at this stage of preseason are to be avoided. But if we didn’t give the ball away so cheaply.

Don’t be afraid to lose, dare to win.

If players won’t fit your system then be brave, Put them on the Official Transfer List.

Now I will not get carried away by this result but some things are becoming painfully obvious, It was hot there, the ball was light and the air lighter. But it was the same for both teams.

If I was sharing a beer with G. Strachan. From my point of view:

Stephen Pressley is over exposed and to long in the tooth to react decisively.
I would like to see JFK or young O’Dea given a chance to impress.
Bobo Balde needs more games. I would give him to Christmas to prove his fitness and commitment.
We do need cover at full back. Wilson looks like he still hasn’t recovered. Give Irvine a chance for the moment.

Tommy Gravesen, has undoubted ability, it is his attitude that I question.
Paul Hartely, looks overawed at wearing the hoops. His ability is beyond question but he has to relax and play his own game.

Nobody in the hoops has a bigger heart than Kenny Millar. Unfortunately it may not be enough to keep you at Celtic.

The best player on the field tonight for me was Sharlie Joeseph. By an American, country mile.
    In a Celtic jersey? Boruc./McGeady

Still a lot of work to be done. Still I look forward to the next game.

Early morning wake up call for Gordon Strachan.
The optimism after the QPR game evaporates in the thinned air of the Rockies.
Followed the game via the CQN updates so am relying on the consensus as expressed above.

Artur saved us from a humiliating scoreline but the team ( especially first half) have once again shafted the Stateside Celtic supporters by putting on an inept performance.
US based fans who told their friends and neighbours that their team was in town are probably now having to explain that "we're much better than that", "it's early in the season" etc. and may be hearing in reply "yeah I think I remember you saying that last year, and come to think of it the year before as well!"

Lots of excuses about humidity, temperature and altitude will be used as mitigation.

The MLS All-Stars may be the best available in the states but they are still a bunch of strangers thrown together and we should not have been completely outclassed in this way.
The stats for 'Shots on Goal' at one stage were Celtic 1, MLS 12

If we do not beat Chicago convincingly I can not see any point or benefit in future US trips ( would we even get a future invite?)

I think there is a possibility that MLS teams see the games as more important than we do ( the way we get fired up to play EPL teams when they see the fixture as just another warm up game)
There is an attraction for the MLS in inviting us.
We bring an audience and it allows them to showcase their league ;it also lets them pretend they are better than they really are
They are raising the profile of their brand outside their shores, but is it at the expense of ours?

    Much better required on Sunday

Doneti? Whoa!!! Did he play the whole game? Did he start?
Brown at least reminded you he was on the park with some lippy in your face stuff and some heavy tackling. If you are not playing well at least compete. I’ll give that to Mr. Brown the rest played poorly and preferred to hid.

The MLS have given last nights game a big build-up.It is depressing that we seem to have performed so poorly. The Americans wil wonder what all the fuss is about, and we are trying to establish a niche in the market over there.

I didn't see the game. However the comments have fuelled my fears.

    If i can quote Estadio.

"That left them in no man's land as players who had run off into the distance couldn't get back leaving us with 2 vs 4!"

I hope that this is soon sorted out.
This was one of the reason's that i rated Neil Lennon so highly.
His role in the side, was a defensive one.
He helped protect the back four ,and retain vital possession, to allow us to build up an attack.

Now many are saying that we gave away possession too easily ,and the back four are unprotected, and out numbered.

Mark Wilson is not a good rightback.
I don't care that it's early in the season. He does not have good defensive awareness, and far too often drift's of his opponent leaving them unmarked.

A dumpling like Lee McCulloch will cause him problems ,because of his strength and his superior height, and better heading ability.

Bobo, must be given games and a proper chance.

He is twice the player Pressley and Caldwell are.

Like Celticlover,i expect far more from JVOH.The jury is still out on him ,for me.
He will probably be our top goalscorer this season, but he still doesn't seem up for it.
He is a poor man's Chris Sutton, or indeed BBJ.
I feared this performance level, but expected the result. As i stated before the match they were good, but not great, opponents.

Many need to stop slagging of The Darnel. We are no great shakes. Many are living in a land of blind delusion.

Still,it is only a pre season friendly.
I am sure that the viewing American public think that we are quite brilliant ,but just not trying.

These jaunts to the USA and the likes of Japan are becoming PR disasters.
They are certainly not enhancing our reputation.
There is no doubt ,that this is now Mr Strachan's team.

There is a rocky road ahead.

He now has all the rope he ever wanted.

Nothing has changed and bearing in mind he wont have Lennon sitting just in front of him this season it is scary.

Question - compared to Pressley is Bobo not worth his salary?

While i agree it's only a pre season friendly some things need addressed.

Pressly and McManus are not a good Defensive pairing. To be honest i would have none of them and have o'dea and Kennedy, but as it looks like one of either pressley or mcmanus will be captain we need to find them a steady partner.

i personally would have naylor as captain or boruc.

It is obvious to us all that we need fullback cover. Naylor is excellent but can't play every game. Wilson is still coming back from injury and may yet surprise us all. That said we require a right back to push him and take over if need be.

I am not to concerned re donati and brown it is early days concerning a partnership and with Mcgeady looking good when naka comes back we may have a dream midfield.

However it is now time to transfer list Hartley, jarosik and gravsen. Cut our losses and buy some decent midlfield cover. Sadly it has not worked out for these guys.

Up front JVOH seems to have been spending time with Zurawski as his heart does not seem in it yet. I have a lot off faith in JVOH but he has to realise this is celtic and we demand 100% at all times.

We must sell Zurawski and Miller and Riordan if he is not going to be played and bring in a quality striker. At the moment we do not seem to have one. We have good honest spl strikers in McDonald and Killen but no one with real quality.

This may appear negative but it is not intented to be I think we have the makings of a fine team. i just feal sorry for the celtic supporters in the USA we have let them and ourselves down. Not by the result but by the way in which we played, poorly and without a semblance of organisation.

I hope we play better at newcastle as that to me is the big test.

When we have played teams of a sub-European standard we have fared reasonably well.Against teams of a better standard things don't look so rosey. And whoever we get in the draw will have already played at least 2 competitive games in Europe.

only 3 games left before the season starts and the biggest game of the season in finacial terms.

So IMHO Balde must be given these 3 games alongside a partner to get himself properly match fit.

We know he has the African Nations cup , but if his presence in the side is enough to get us through to CL group stages then he will have justified himself.

Pressley is and has always been an average SPL stopper in the mould of Tweed , Scott Willson, Darren Dods.I also put McManus in this class aswell, honest hard working pros who give their all but lack quality.

This is an area of the team Strachan must address, O'Dea and Kennedy are a season away from being the finished article and the Future stars we all want them to be.

This is not based on last nights performance.

We certainly can afford Balde's wages. And at times I think fans should almost forget about wages, as its not the players fault they get paid too much, its the clubs.

We currently have a significantly lower wage bedget than we have had for years, so without analysing players terms individually, I think we cant afford to get rid of Balde, considering the centre half options it will leave us with.

Plenty of Centre halfs, but are any of them currently ready to be part of a team with REAL european aspirations, and grow as such. Along with Balde (already shown his worth at that level), I only see O'Dea who could currently setp up to the plate for that.

McManus has his strengths, and is good for certain situations, Caldwell hasnt played enough games at Centre half (or indeed enough at a high standard) to show he is ready/tough enough, Kennedy for me is still a stone too heavy and looks cumbersome turning and defenitely neeeeds to sharper his game and decision making up, Pressley has never been good enough for that level, now he is declining.

I dont know who id keep out of Caldwell, McManus, and Kennedy (if I was incharge) because they all have ability or potential, but just think they are too much of a liability to see us get to another euro final or really scare top european teams again...

If we can afford baldes wages why are we trying to punt him to anyone who will buy him?

Balde is our best defender we should say he is not for sale and build our defence around him and naylor.

I agree with the rest but feel Strachan and the moneymen would love to see Balde off the books.

    Hi Dick

I will happily eat humble pie in that scenario but I feel that we will not have a good enough squad if the two Hearts drop outs are in our strongest starting eleven.

I am not privvy to the celtic dressing room or the training performances of players but i would hope that even in the current squad, there is a fitter and faster eleven available that doesn't need these two.

I see them as fine enough squad players but I would be very disappointed if they were the best we had going into a European campaign.

I know our manager loves experienced pro's (he was one himself for a good long time) but they need to have quality as well as an old head.

Shattered after getting up in the middle of the night to watch THAT performance.

The centre of our defence and right side are going to be our weak spot again this year again. Pressley, really, really not good enough.

Still amazes me when WGS plays particular players out of position, when he has seen them have absolute stinkers in the same positions previously, namely Jarosik on the left and Hartley on the right.

Surely Mc Geady/Riordan should have started on the left with O'Brien or Teddy on the right (and yes I know Teddy is a central midfielder, but still more effectual that Hartley out there), JJ and Hartley are central midfielders and clueless on the flanks, playing them elsewhere resulted in the Donati and Brown being over run and leaving the defence badly exposed.

We were taught a lesson, it could have been a lot harsher only for a Boruc masterclass again, but I think WGS still has a lot to spend and the problem spots are more than visible to everyone.

Yet again, the usual harbingers of doom have shown their heads from the mineshaft. We're doomed, we lost in a friendly, how dare we lose in front of the tv cameras and the American Celts.

IT WAS A FRIENDLY, a training excercise, a game in which last year Chelsea lost and one of the MLS players described it as "his world cup final" and Jose described it as " a training game".

The high horses have been mounted and we are being told about "worst fears realised". We even have people saying we should be playing lesser opposition in our pre-season so we can score lots of goals. What good would playing against part timers do us in terms of fitness? We could stroll around and score a few and generally take it easy, in these games against better opposition, who it must be noted are halfway through their season, we get tested by their fitness, match sharpness and the fact they are very up for the game against the European upstarts.

Lets at least take a lesson from last year when we were beaten in most of our pre-season games yet still qualified for the last 16 in the cl and won a double. Lets wait until the serious stuff starts before we judge the players and manager. Lets wait until the transfer window has closed before we start demanding Gordon's head because he hasn't signed any one else.

If there is one major criticism of Strachan it's that our defence has been a mess since the end of the MON era, and he has done little to remedy it in his time as our manager.

I think weve got too many vying for a central midfield role - but if we moved on a few - from last nights viewing Joseph could be worth a relatively inexpensive punt. He could also help to bring on Sno's game I suppose.

Someone said last night on here that Sno (and O'Dea) didnt travel to the US. I didnt realise that, and cant confirm, but he certianly didnt make and appearence last night...

    Gweedore Bhoy,

Constructive criticism is good and to be honest I agree with most of what you have said this morning,it is constructive in the main, My post wasn't aimed at you mate, other than the "Newcastle game will be the real test".

I agree Pressley shouldn't be regarded as a first choice CH, I'd love big John Kennedy to be the player he was and O'Dea to be the player we want him to be. I would also agree that Bobo on his game was our best defender but I also think he has his games few and far between now.

The real test for Celtic will be when the competitive games start and the CL qualifier is the REAL test not a friendly against Newcastle.

I think it's hilarious that we've gone full-circle with Balde. Do people forget the madness in the man's play? I'm not even talking about his defeat-snatching antics in Seville; I'm talking about Lorenzo Amoruso-style errors against SPL sides. He may have better technique than McManus, but the man is a time-bomb, in my opinion.

If things arent working at the back then perhaps we should try out other things. If Strachan sees a use for Balde this season then fine, but let's not make a martyr or prodigal hero out of Bobo until he's hit a bit of form (and, if he does hit form and his stock rises, I'd like to see if his agent isnt again angling for a move back to the continent for him.) I hope I'm wrong and Balde is a revelation this season, at home and in Europe. But until that time I wont curse players like McManus, who've done an admirable job for us for long enough now.

There is no argument whatsoever for Elvis, however. The joke's over ("we can win the league even with clapped-out former currant buns") so let him lumber off to a coaching job somewhere, please.

none of what im about to say is in relation to last nights game
against the MLS select, as i didnt see it and have no interest in
pre-season friendlies whatsoever. pre-season used to be
better when we were whacking 3rd division german sides 12-0
and giving the forwards plenty of practice.

we all knew (im sure) that pressley was a "journeyman" pro.
just not a quality centre half, certainly not better than what we
already had, albeit mostly injured. a good short term stop-gap
signing...at the time. he should not be commanding a starting place
every week. we all know it, does G.Strachan?

Hartley, no more excuses for this guy. never has been and never
will be good enough for a celtic midfield place. i cannot understand
for the life of me why we signed him. does G.Strachan know?

jarosik and gravesen for all the hype (i include my own excitement at the
prospect of these two in the hoops) are just not up to life as a celt.
jarosik has all the grace and neat touches a quality euro campaigner should have.
he just seems to have no drive or will in him. punt him as soon as.
gravesen, we all had high hopes. all dashed, a joker of a player. shows great
vision and an array of passing and shooting abilities, but good god he looks like
a 7 year old running around chasing the game getting nowhere near it far too much to
be any good. take the hit, ship him out.

i thought mark wilson was excellent in his first few months at the club, where has that player gone? go get whittaker.

Balde...another player who gets better the longer we dont see him. his time like lennons, suttons, thompsons, etc. has been and gone.

up front wowee where to begin.
miller - see hartley and pressley.
zurawski - underwhelmed by his lack of application.
riordan - why did we sign him? if we are not going to play him.
jvoh - better start delivering early or there will be rumbles.

thank goodness for boruc, naka, mcgeady, s. brown, kennedy, odea, sno & naylor.
we are still the best in the country by a long long way.
but our ambition is now bigger than that. isnt it?

I agree with what you say, and if he is going to sit on the bench all season i would look to move him on too. That goes for any player around the 30 mark, if they are not going to play then they should be looked at with a view to selling them. However I feel Bobo could and should have a big role in our first team...

Out-of-favour Celtic defender Bobo Balde has pledged his immediate future to the Glasgow club despite reported interest from Sunderland.
Black Cats manager Roy Keane was reported to have made a £1.5m offer for his former Celtic team-mate.

"I have made it clear in the past that I am very happy at Celtic and I am not interested in anything else," Balde told the Daily Record.

"As far as I am concerned, nobody has spoken to me about a move anywhere."

The 31-year-old Guinea international has returned to action after a broken leg and is determined to regain his place in the centre of the defence.

But he faces intense competition from Stephen McManus, Steven Pressley, Darren O'Dea, Gary Caldwell and John Kennedy.

"I love the club, I am very settled in Glasgow and I would be happy to fulfil my current contract," said Balde, who has two years of his current contract still to run.

"I just want to be fit and ready for the start of the new season.

"I am just concentrating on getting my fitness back to where it was.

"Last season was one to forget and I want to get back to my best."

History shows again and again..I think it was the great Hungarians or Real Madrid or possibly both that believed in going out pre-season and getting a string of 15-0 victories under their belts.
The best season Celtic ever had was built on a very successful close season tour of the US.

Yes these are pre-season games, but we should be seeing some evidence of the team taking shape, with only a bit of tweaking to do before the real stuff starts. We can win the SPL in half a season. We must avoid another Artmedia debacle.
We don't know what our central defensive pairing is,we dont know who our wide left midfielder is,or who will play upfront.

And if Naka gets injured against Australia?

Gweedore, no, I did not say that, but it is time to plan beyond Bobo (though I would have McManus in ahead of him and sometimes Caldwell).

    Sell and replace him.

Your opinion that Bobo is our best centre half is not one I share. He is a play who often plays better in the memory that on the park (as Rev Davie alludes to).

Your assertion that moving him on is about money, not football is again an opinion but not one that stands up to much scrutiny.

Bobo was never first choice last season, like any other second choice player around his age at the club, he is available for transfer. You may not think the manager was right to leave him out so often (whereas I do), but given that he clearly did, Bobo should join the list along with Gravesen, Jarosik and Miller – who are all available for football reasons.

Michael 67, you cannot fault his attitude. I discussed him with ‘the man’, who enthused about Bobo; his play, his attitude, the fact that he signed his last contract for less money than Middlesbrough had offered, but..

Sentimentality is a curse to the truly ambitious; it is time to move on.

Maybe we do all take pre season friendlies a bit too seriously. I was as pleased as anyone at the performance against QPR, but we need to balance that against the two losses.

But what have we really learned? That Scott Brown is a good signing and could become a great one? That Stephen Pressley is past his best? That we need cover for our two starting full backs? That Jarosek and Hartley are not wide players? That our big centre forward plays best when we have genuine wide players to supply him? Frankly, nothing that we didn't already know.

Why don't we just accept that the results so far, and Newcastle, Parma, etc., will have no great bearing on the real games to come? Let's just hope that we get the fitness levels up and don't pick up any serious injuries. After all, that's what pre-season is far.

I agree with all you say especially about the two players we signed from Hearts.

Both are not Celtic Class and have no resale value...ok we got pressley free but he costs in wages.

I also beleive we are the best in the country , but Smith will have his team better prepared for the rigours of the SPL and especailly for the physical games against us.

Our main problem is that all the players you quoted yes should be shipped out but who will take them and will they go?

I beleive alot of them are happy here and that Strachan has more or less assured some of them that they are big players for us..Pressley , Hartley etc..

So now we have to trust the wee man and hope he gets it right..

I have my doubts..and hope they are wrong

Bobo Balde's best days are behind him and I think that it would be best for him and the club that he was moved on. He could probably do with the new challenge and get the most out of his career before it comes round to retirement-time.

However, when it comes to questioning his wages I think we should not forget that he was the beneficiary of reckless decision-making by O'Neill. I don't think anyone here would feel guilty if we were offered a walloping great wage rise with some juicy terms from our employers, I don't see why Bobo should be any different. Could we have less of the sanctimonious, hypocritical nonsense about his wages please? If you want someone to blame about Bobo's wages, blame O'Neill.

I would have Pressley in the team any time before McManus. McManus aka Scottish John Terry is an embarassment and the sooner he disappears from the side the better. I have no desire to see the 21st century equivalent of Jonathan Gould (the Scottish Sun's friend!) playing for, far less being the footballing spokesman for the club. His distribution is woeful, his technique is atrocious and I would rather have anyone of 5 other players as captain before him.

Rangers "victims of massive transfer fraud".

Police raids carried out on two top flight football clubs and Rangers F.C. sparked a frenzy of speculation this afternoon. It was initially believed that the raids, which were carried out at the request of the City of London Police force's Economic Crime Squad, were related to the Stevens investigation into corrupt transfer dealings. However, police sources this evening revealed that at least one of the clubs, Rangers, are believed to be the victims of a crime rather than the perpetrators.

It is believed that the police investigation is centring on the transfer of Filip Sebo, who arrived at Ibrox in a £2m transfer from Austria Vienna in July 2006. "We believe that Rangers have been defrauded on a massive scale", a source close to the investigation commented this evening. "Filip Sebo isn't fit for purpose. Whoever sold him to Rangers is clearly a con-man, and a good one at that."

Police removed twelve boxes of material from Rangers stadium Ibrox Park earlier today. it is being widely reported that they contained DVDs of last season's fixtures, which the police consider to be "damning evidence". "All you need to do is watch a couple of these games," our source revealed, "and it becomes painfully clear that whoever the mysterious Mr. Sebo actually is, he's not a professional footballer."

Police sources refuse to confirm or deny that the parents of an educationally subnormal Slovakian goatherd, missing since last May, have claimed that Sebo is their son. Investigations into both cases remain ongoing

It would actually be good to have a center half in the team who could actually win a header!! O'dea, don't quote me looks smaller than Mcmanus, but wins most of his ariel battle's. Still watching last night's game. So far, Pressley has looked dreadful, so too Jarosik and Wilson. Brown has been anonymous, likewise JVOH. Boruc has been Boruc, sheer class. McManus looks lost without a class CH beside him (he was simply nowhere when Angel scored). Very worrying, because we seem to have no cohesion; no build up play at all. Our defending was shambolic, to say the least.

I know it's not going to happen but I would love if we could get rid of Pressley, Hartley, Gravesen, Miller, Bobo and Jarosik (who seems to me to have no heart). I would rather see us play Bjarnason,O'Dea or Kennedy or our trialist.

Why persevere with players the manager doesn't rate.

Players with no long term future have to have their expectations managed.
We have half a team of underperformers from last season.

I just don't see what good it would do us now, the guys we would play would be unfit, and no stretch to our Bhoys at all. I can only equate it to when I played and we took on Whitehill Welfare in our pre-season, the same season they played Celtic at Easter Road, they leathered us but we were run into the ground and there was no hiding place, we also played a few lesser amateur teams and strolled around for a bit and scored a few goals. I know which one meant more to me in terms of my fitness.

The U2 soundcheck comment was a class comment. Spot on.

Bobo is our best defender (imho) but Strachan is looking for a CB that can play the ball out intelligently and safely. That Mc Manus and Pressley are being entrusted with this duty without Lennon´s cover is a worry. Especially as the weak sided are of the defense (right back) has to be covered by slow Stephen Pressley. I also think that somebody has to pull Pressley aside and hammer into him to play the game and forget about his inept attempts at influencing officials. He has a penchant for that and it´s a sign for any player that the game is up. Actually I wake up screaming in the middle of the night in a cold sweat over that one - regularly!!

I think it´s important that Strachan gets a consistent defence. First 5 names on the team sheet every week. No tinkering there please. We have a plethora (my english teacher will be well pleased) of centre backs, strikers, midfielders and a dearth of full backs and wingers.

I know it´s against the Strachan philosphy but he has a perfect squad for a 3-5-2 formation. Naylor would be sacrificed though and that is patently not fair.

So if their still is to be a WAO signing then it has to be either a right full back or a forward. My head says full back but my heart says striker.

My only wish for this season is for the football to be more dynamic and entertaining. Not in America but on a cold December Saturday at Parkhead oooohh and for us to draw Prague in the CL pre-qaulifiers.

    Hail Hail

Despite what I've said about Balde, he might be handy for the Old Firm games. Walter Smith is being far from subtle in his approach... he's signing big bruisers. Has anyone seen pictures of that Darcheville one? He is short, I know, but he looks as broad as a bus! I fear he may just run right over wee O'Dea. Perhaps big Bobo would be a good utility man, lest any teams should try and take liberties with some of our more refined players. As we found out under Tommy Burns, it can be difficult for players who want to play the cavalier game if that Govan crowd are intent on a hatchet job.

Can we be successful without a "minder" type player?

Gone are Thompson, Sutton and Lennon.

Balde wasn't first choice last season because the Caldwell/McManus partnership worked until Caldwell got a serious injury. However as the squad of defenders stand as just can't see how we can do without him.

Rangers if nothing else will try to bully us off the park.

Can the present squad stand upto the type of tactics we all know Smith will employ.

Last night may have only been a friendly but it was a good excercise as it shows up our average players as just that.

So not having seen Celtic play but having read lots of reports from all the sources available, but mostly here on CQN, I feel we need to cover two positions: we need a striker and a defender. I think EVERYONE sees this as a necessity to alleviate any lingering anguish that we may feel before endeavouring into the Champions League. In my opinion the present squad is strong enough to win the SPL. With that out the way, I am more concerned about Celtic’s performance and progress in the Champions League. However, if we come back to our striker/defender problem, it would appear too much to ask for Celtic to invest in two quality players to cover these positions. So we need to make a choice.

Much and all as I would really love to see a great striking partnership up front (which would bring us the necessary excitement and produce goals, which we all want to see, and win us matches even though we would leak more at the back), I feel we have to strengthen the defence. Since it is the Champions League that presents a concern, we should invest everything we can in the best defender that we can buy. Unfortunately I feel that Pressley shouldn’t be seen in the Champions League and could well be a liability to our progress. The defence is just an “I hope that Balde, Kennedy, MacMannus, Caldwell, Wilson become reliably good” strategy. Therefore, if we invested in another player, namely a defender, I would sleep soundly. I believe that a defender is what we need more than anything else.

    A defender, a defender, defo a defender.

    Hail Hail
