Evening all. I'm looking forward to the game.

I was wondering about what the thoughts were on what appears to an ultimatum from Mr Riorden?

Obviously he may be misquoted, but it would appear from the headlines I've seen that he is effectively saying: play me or I'm off at the end of August.

It's quite ironic that I think he should be given a run in the team ahead of McGeady, HOWEVER, if these stories are in any way accurate he should be booted out the door tomorrow.

Who does he think he is to issue ultimatums to the manager via the Daily Record??

If he has been misquoted he should say so via the official site.

    MON THE HOOPS!!!

On the question of watching players in the flesh, Nial Quinn is reported in the Irish Press today as saying that Sunderland have been ofered over one thousand players by agents in the close season alone.

Is it not time that FIFA looked at the role agents play in the game

It appears that Naisal is about to hand in a formal transfer request. Interesting.

Is it still the rule that a player requesting a move receives a lower percentage of the fee?

If so, Huns offer same deal, Killie accept and the boy takes a cut on his fee, leaving Killie with more net money.

They get their man, Nais gets his "dream move" and Killie bank more of the money.

As yon cricket fella says, "Happy Days".

I honestly didn't see anything amiss in Deek's comments. Let's not over react. He'll make it (or not) based on his performances on (and off) the park.

Interesting team. Pity I can't see the game (till later).

Paul, Edward....what are we to read into the 'cash' issue re Rangers' transfer bids? Obviously, they won't buy a player that is outwith their budget. But why is there such an emphasis on small(ish) initial payments? Surely there can't be a cash flow issue at the time of year when all the season ticket money is flowing in.

    What am I missing here...?

11 mins. goal for Newcastle, Martins.

Weeron, your info is correct, Rangers have bid very little money down, which is why Kilmarnock are not keen.

While their overdraft will be small at the moment compared to how it will be later in the year, the bank will have targets in place which will vary for the time of year.

European cash looks to be what they are counting on.

Armchair viewing and so far, IMO, poor poor fare. McGeady despite his good shot at goal a second a go, is doing his usual running up dead ends and doing stepovers routine. No doubting the boys talent, but this season is when he has to learn it's ateam game and passing is allowed.
Magic and Big Jan look a bit leaden footed.

    Half time: Newcastle 3-0 Celtic

It has been a fairly even game apart from the fact that Newcastle are able to score at will when they test the Celtic central defence.

Celtic don’t have much urgency about them – apart from Zurawski, who looks keen. McGeady had had nice touches.

Defeat in preseason games is beginning to tire even me.

3 - 0 down but that doesn't reflect the play. Some very good finishing is the difference. We've looked bright at times without creating more than half chances.

More worryingly, Artur looks to be carrying his left arm with some sort of injury.

McGeady, Brown and Donati looking good. Hartley not in the game, clearly not a wide player.

Let's hope for more in the second half.

Gordon Strachan is the failing. He does not know how to build a defensive unit, any fan from any other club he has managed will tell you that. He is probably sitting there thinking it ok I've gor Pressley to come back into the side.

bizarre game. we are actually playing some nice stuff, but they look like scoring every time they go forward.

    pluses: McGeady, Donati, Caddis, Naylor.

    minuses:
    1. defence is overall very shaky and naive looking
    2. powderpuff tackling

    Pretty reasonable account there.

If Newcastle don't want Luque, with Viduka, Ameobi, Owen and Martens, can we get him?

JK has looked a bit off, but the biggest disappointment for me is JVOH. And can we please stop the crosses coming in?

Who is the common factor in all our CD pairings?????? I wonder? Could it be the boy who would be captain....maybe all the eyes should be looking in that direction instead of blaming everyone else.

  • At 26/07/07 20:40, GM said…

"Your team's getting hammered. This is embarassing". Quote from Mrs GM who doesn't watch much football.

    Unfortunately she is correct.

Boruc: looks to have injured his left arm/hand.

Central defense: look slow and lathargic against the mobile athletic strikers of Newcastle, Martins in particular.

Caddis getting a good work out against quality players.

Naylor: pretty dreadful. His crossing has been woeful.

The Golden Child: responsible for the first and third goals. Fell asleep and didn't track his man for the first and gave away the ball for the second.

    Donati: still looks quality.

    Skoosh: trying too hard.

    Hartley:

JVOH: someone wrote earlier this week that he was a poor man's Chris Sutton. On his current form that is a big insult to Chris.

Both our strikers do not look sharp at all.

We have no cutting edge in the final third and the defense is wafer thin when stretched.

JVoH looks tired. Nothing is sticking to him at all, and his reactions seem dulled.

Donati looks like the man with the killer pass from midfield. Majic seems to be responding well to that facility.

Hartley shouldn't be playing on the right - he just isn't good enough for that role.

It's got to get better in the second half, hasn't it....?

    G.

  • At 26/07/07 20:43, PjDali said…

    My personal thoughts.......

3rd goal was a move for celtic breaking down as a loose flick on from McGeady was intercepted on teh half way line....Naylor was already on the overlap and basically we were left wide open on teeh left back area and a decent deep cross was flicked in by Luque with little or no challenge from JK as Boruc tried to block the goal bound flick.
    Really poor goal to lose!!

Not really sure if I could blame anyone for losing 3 goals as defence is a shambles...we just look very very poor at the back and easy to pick off and open up.

I like the look of Donati but we get little real incisive play from Hartley...Brown busy but not bossing the game by any stretch of the imagination. McGeady having a decent game.

Up front Majiec and JVoH just don't look too troublesome...for NU backline...a few half chances but let's face it, they have had little supply by way of decent crosses.

  • At 26/07/07 20:43, cybercheeko said…

right and left back's are part of the problem tonight - neither can stop crosses into the box - at the same time - neither can send a decent cross into the opposition's box either!
Midfield is ok - but there's not enough movement up front when we're on the ball - and on the odd occasion we have found a front man, they have managed to fall over the ball.
Donati is the stand-out in the first half, with Aiden trying hard in second place.

  • At 26/07/07 20:44, Gordon_J said…

Why do some people think that every goal ever scored means the defence was at fault? Sometimes good attacking play gets its reward, as it did for Martins with a fine strike for the first

The second and third goals though came from good crosses that we did not defend well.

JVOH..slow, soft ,concerning me..no Sutton or BBJ
    Magic..a few intelligent runs ok

    ref giving us nothing

could drive a bus through the middle of defence

    NOT GOOD

Defence. What defence? Every time Newcastle go up the park, they look like scoring. I think Naylor's distribution is particularly poor.

JVOH and Magic seem to be brushed off the ball too easily.

To me, the ironic thing, after the last couple of days on here, is that Aiden McGeady looks far and away our best player. Donati and Brown have produced a bit of decent stuff.

Here's hoping that's the last we see of Hartley (even if he might have beeen pulled back early on).

So will it be ok for the Hun to beat us 3-0 since it didnt actually reflect the play?
The defence is gash and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Dont lets kid ourselves that this season will be as easy as the last 2.
Ok, wattie's signings might not have set the heather on fire but if they are motivated enough to play to the top of their game, while our admittedly better players continue to under-achieve, then we are in trouble.

    Looks like Artur is injured.

PH picked up where he left off.

Aiden - great on the ball but has left LN very exposed.

We have not won a header at the back so far - come on Bobo.

Donati - looks to be class.

    Scott B too quiet.

But the big worry is JVOH - he looks slow and is losing the physical battles.

    Teddy for PH.
    Bobo for JK
    Brown for Artur

    please ......

If they still play as high in this half then I would have Skippy on deffo and possibly Miller. JVOH not good tonight, and his star has been waning for some on here just lately, and Magic a bit more up for it and maybe a bit unfortunate not to have scored. We're needing a second for corners because PH aint getting the ball to our big men. Would like to see someone actually nullify Nicky Butt and maybe press tight to Solano.

It's a shame we looked nippy for the first part.

Donati splitting them open with his passing can u imagine Naka in with him. Looks impressive.

Naylor left isolated on the left to defend on his own.

Why does McManus play offside when he has the guy covered bizarre.

I think big JK has looked alright.
Can believe when you see Bobo picking his nails on the bench that he can't get a game in the centre.

    Paul67,

I pray to good we buy a dominating centre half. If not i fear worst. WGS aint that stupid is he?

Something not right with Jan. Magic??? Time is up for me.

We need a quality striker to take those chances. We could have easily scored a couple of goals in the first half if we had a goalscorer like Frei.

The back 4 are rubbish m8. McGeady is my only +point.

Are you watching the same BJK?

First goal, who should have been closer to Martins?

Third goal, who couldn't cut out the cross before Luque.

Second goal, where was the CH marking.

He's having a mare, but seems we can't critise the big man.

Pretty incredible that alot of posters are blaming the two homegrown players for the first half doing.

Kennedy was clearly at fault for both 1st and 2nd goals - out of position after getting sucked in behind McManus making the tackle and then slow to come out.

However I can accept we are playing JFK to give him as many games as we can.

The criticism of McGeady and McManus is over the top!

I'm staying upbeat on the basis that these games are public training sessions, which have just got more public due to digital tv.

Easy for me to say here in my armchair. A lot of guys though have spent good money supporting the team and they're being publicly embarrassed.

I'd rather get humped here than in a real game. Having said this, Hartley doesn't look the part out right and more worringly, big JVOH couldn't trap the proverbial bag of cement.

There is no movement up front.

    Defence is really worrying too!

Surely Gordon's first team is (if fit)

Boruc, Wilson, Naylor, Bobo, Caldwell, Brown, Donati, Nakamura, McGeady, JVOH, McDonald.

Subs JFK, McManus, Riordan, Killen, anothers

Would like to see this team given a run out before ECL action.

I think the conext is important, pre season etc. Remember last season when we were played off the park by a Man Utd reserve team, but the real season went not too bad.

However, definitely a few things to worry about. Has anyone noticed how small our team is - I know young Caddis isn't a regular full back but you simply can't have players that size anymore, particularly in defence.

GS has made comment before about his concerns about the size of the players coming through - I watched a rerun of last season's reserve game and could not believe how small they the team was (with the exception of Cillian).

Where is the dig in the team? The biggest guy in the team (JVOH) is getting push about by guys half his size.

Where are the moaners in the team - criticise Lennon as much as you want, but at least he showed passion, regardless of how badly he was playing.

Need to get the finger out 2nd half and try to take one of the many chances that we have been creating so far.

    GSC_BHOY
PS Good game from Aiden (just a pity he is playing on his own)

Naylor is looking bad cause the McGeady aint tracking back giving him a hand. e.g first goal. Done it numerous times. Doesn't drop back when naylor goes as well hence the gaping hole to expose.

For the first 25 mins McGeady was gash. He brightened up in the last 15 mins. What a shot and a few passes?

You'll see Teddy on for Hartley McDonald for Magic. Riordan might come on as well for Aiden. Hopefully Bobo as well.

A strange game in that we have played some nice stuff.

I just think perhaps some players are not up to it or out of position.

Boruc looks injured and should have come off before the third goal.

Naylor is having a torrid time but it is Solano after all.

JK looks rusty played the man on for the 2nd goal but is covering for Caddis who is up against milner who looks the part.

    Mcmanus seems solid enough

We played some nice stuff in midfield with donati and mcgeady up for it. Brown seems overawed which is natural with such a large travelling support. He will come good.

Hartly is out of position. When he played through the middle he looked his old self. He is not the cover for naka.

Up front JVOH is embarressing period. He needs a good shake and taken off.

    Zurawski is lively but poor.

I hope to see Boruc rested.
    Wilson on for Caddis
    Hartley and brown switch
JVOh and Zurawski replaced by McDonald and Killen or Miller.

Newcastle are very flat at the back and pace could help avert a humilating defeat.

As i said strange game we played some nice stuff but we are very weak at the back and up front.

I really don't like criticising anyone in a Celtic jersey, but I really do feel that, looking at the bigger picture, this is a big season for Aidan McGeady. Tricks and stepovers are very entertaining but ultimately, there has to be an end product. I'm no suggesting he should score every time, just that he should bring more to the team. The support overall expect big things from the boy. Some have unrealistic, Ronaldinho like expectations. Me. I'd be happy seeing him improve his final ball and add half a dozen goals.
