    From previous thread

    I’d love it.

I was a verbal member of the Brisbane Celtic supporters Club way back when. Now it’s evolved. A sight to see, on match night. O’Malleys pub could be the Gorbals.
This week I’ll make my membership official and in doing so I’ll bring back some of their neat polo’s.
    You can view them online.

Brisbane Celtic Supporters Club. Get your orders in now.

Also I will bring back my Tri-colour.
Made in Kuala Lumpur, and present at more than a few, Young Ireland games.
I will personalise it slightly and will pass it on to anybody who will display it where it belongs

    Celtic Park.

I’ve been hanging onto it for years in the hope that Celtic would visit here and since my house is visible on the flight path in, my intention was to cover my roof in welcome but it just doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

It’s not the biggest but it ain’t small either.

Better at home in Glasgow, than a bed for one of my cats.

I see the rags have Shaun Maloney homesick and desperate to return to Celtic.

If true, I sincerely hope we decline his wishes. Mid-table mediocrity and a fat(ter) wallet were more attractive to an injured Shaun Maloney than Glasgow Celtic Football Club and our rich, unique heritage.

You have moved on Shaun and so have Celtic. Loved you when you were here, couldn't care less now you have gone.

  • At 15/07/07 13:17, derbyshirebhoy said…

    U2

Afraid I disagree. I'd have him back in an instant.

  • At 15/07/07 13:21, BJD said…

U2 1888- you're saying that you wouldn't like to see a midfield of Nakamura, Brown, Donati and maloney? I think that would be brilliant. Yes, he made a mistake, but if he came back, took our original offer, made some sort of apology/acknowledgment that he got it wrong, then he DEFINITELY improve the team. He is better than McGeady and definitely better than Riordan, and left midfield remains a worry for me.

I'd take him back in a second, and I think he would do really well for Celtic.

I'm with you. I think Shaun made an excellent contribution to the team when he played, and i feel he would have made a difference to the teams play in the latter half of the season.

We all make mistakes and if he wants to correct his, I feel he should be given the chance.

    Bangkokbhoy

  • At 15/07/07 13:25, Ardoch said…

    U2 spot on.

If Shaun Maloney was as good as he think he is he'd be some player instead of a nearly man.

    RE: Maloney
From a purely footballing point of view of course I would welcome him back, he would without question be better than McGeady and Riordin.
    BUT
Would it not be a bit embaresing for the club, chaseing after a man who left our club and then decided he wanted to come back, sort of implies the man is bigger than the club, and I do not believe we should be seen to pander to his wishes.
Basicaly Im in two minds over this, he would add to the team, but should we allow him back or should we look elsewhere for new wing talent (Adu? Bjarnson?)?

  • At 15/07/07 13:40, bangkokbhoy said…

    Ardoch

In what way is Shaun Maloney a nearly man? In his first full season in the first team he won player and young player of the year. He seems to have done all right for a nearly man, don't you think?

    re maloney

if the rumour is true then everyone deserves a second
chance. if he realises now what a mistake he had made
    - then by all means get a good celt back.

If Petrov or Maloney return I will eat my whole wardrobe. A total non-starter FGS. After all the trouble they went to to reach the EPL they would consider themselves a failure to walk away after such a short period.

Really is a waste of type to even mention it:)

    Derbyshire et al,

We should agree to disagree. If he ever wears the hoops again he will get my full backing, but I don't think he should be given the privelage.

Shaun had one golden season and decided he would take the money and run. He was offered excellent terms by Celtic in the end, after a couple of rounds of negotiation.

The club is bigger than the individual.

Bobby Petta had a wonderful season and got a new contract on the back of it. We paid financially for that mistake!

If Shaun was worth "x" 6 months ago there is no way he is worth "x + transfer fee" now.

Antsman and Derbyshirebhoy - hate to spoil the mood, but I'm just off the phone to Stewart at Setanta after holding on for 15 mins and he confirmed they won't be showing it at 6pm. He explained the reason is because the local council at QPR banned Setanta from broadcasting live from QPR's ground which ties in with the "no permission obtained" post on here earlier. When I asked if Setanta had plans to show the game on any of their channels in the near future he said probably, but they don't have this information available to them yet. He did happen to mention that Setanta were furious about the situation as well as ourselves, but that doesn't really help matters just now does it?.....best bet will probably be just after the hour on Sky Sports News - they ususally tend to do a round up of the friendlies and they did show our goals v Peterborough before anyone else.

Bhoys and Ghirls - they've just shown the goals on Sky Sports News. Very good I have to say. Big Jan's first was reminiscent of his his goal against Livi in the Scottish Cup last season. Capone's shot was good and from distance, but the keeper made a mess of it and should have saved. Brown stroked his goal away very nicely as well. Wee Miller (and I'm not a fan) showed good composure and vision to pick out Skippy for his goal too.

Sky Sports News usually repeat their news each hour so anybody that missed it this hour, if you're able to tune in, it should be on about 18.10.

I agree with you re. rumour, tittle tattle, etc. but I treated my fellow golfer as I would if I was cross questioning him in Court:

Q Were you in the pub at the time of the attack?
    A Yes

Q Can you identify the attacker?
A Yes (pointing at the accused).

Q Did you see the accused attack the victim?
    A Yes

Q Did the accused have a glass in his hand?
    A Yes

That is why I think that the story, unfortunately, has a fair substance of truth in it.

There is a trial ongoing but it might be for a previous fracas in another Edinburgh/Leith pub. I'm told that the victim in the incident with the glass might not have brought a charge.

I realised what you meant as I posted. i was thrown a bit because i do now live in phuket and wondered how you might have known!

I know Shaun hovered around for a few seasons but he do you think he could really have broken inot an established team? What i meant was, when he got a chance to get into the starting line-up, he did have a pretty good year. I understand why you consider him as a one season wonder, but I see it as someone who worked there way into the first team. I agree he's missed his chance of being a Celtic great.
Anyway, he's no longer one of ours, and hopefully by the looks of todays midfielders we seem to eb doing fine.
Maybe Naka will struggle for a game when he gets back!!

Sorry for another lenghty(ish) post Bhoys and Ghirls - Spotted these quotes from a guy that ironically calls himself "King Of Hoops" from a QPR forum....here's the first one.......

"If you were not here you would look at 5-1 and think the worst.
If you were ther you would know that there was plenty of positives to come out of the match. We were the better team for the first half with a half strengft team and with a similar half strength team did ok against a full strength Celtic team (4 games into their friendlies). For al, you doom and gloom merchants it was not as bad as the scoreline suggests, I am more confident after going than I was before."

Hmmmm - were you watchin' the same game I was listenin' to mate?!!!...

Anyhoo - later on in their blog somebody asked him how Celtic played and this was the response from the same guy....

"The Argi , I think he was Caponi looked good and Miller and Van Hessalink looked a tidy partnership. In all Celtics defence was more composed than the normal championship outfit and created more time on the ball to clear dangerous situations than a standard championship defence would and therefore didn't put themselves under the pressure that we are used to seeing. Plus Boruc made a couple of outstanding saves when called on."

OK, so he was off the mark with Capone's nationality, but interesting to hear his views on on the composure of our defence today.

I for one think our central defensive partnership should be McManus and Kennedy. Both these Bhoys have proven they can cut it the majority of the time they play. Graham Taylor once said that ALL defenders make mistakes, the very best ones just make less. All our defenders (and Goalkeepers for that matter) will continue to make mistakes, but it's not something just peculiar to Celtic and we should all remember this.

In my humble opinion the central defenders that have looked most composed on the ball, have a presence and can acutally DEFEND are the two that came through our own ranks and played for most of the game today - McManus and Kennedy. I hope WGS gives these Bhoys a few more games together before our CL qualifier.

Pressley - not good enough I'm afraid big man.
Caldwell - not physical enough for a defender imo and whoever said this guys passing was great, well.......
Bobo - I love the guy - he scares forwards and can defend, unfortunately, he makes a few too many mistakes
O'Dea - another that's came through our own ranks and I think he could make it if given the chance.

Can't wait for our next pre-season game........

Noel (et al) - I don't want to speak too soon, but I am CERTAIN Skoosh will be an immense player for Celtic. In hindsight, Neil Lennon will be viewed in general terms as a fantastic player for Celtic (not necessarily a fantastic ambassador given some of his antics when his passions took over), but again in my opinion, Neil had definately one, maybe even two seasons too long at the club he adores. Yes, he was dependable at doing the simple things the majority of the time, but in no way could anybody describe Neil as being "dynamic". This is where wee Skoosh comes into his own. From what we saw of him at Hibs and from what we've seen / heard of him so far in these visually challenging pre-season friendlies, I think we all have a lot to look forward to.

WGS said when he arrived at Celtic that he was looking for fast, passing, flowing football, which I'm sure was music to our ears. I always challenged this for as long as we had players like Alan Thompson and Neil Lennon in our team. (incidentally - I liked Thommo too, but he was certainly no speed merchant!!).

The average age of the starting 11 next season will hopefully have come down a bit and I am honestly more confident of retaining the SPL Championship this season than I have ever been.

Paul's cliched "Generation of Domination" should be coming ever more apparant to us all as the season unfolds......... I hope.

Am I getting carried away after a 5-1 victory against a poor outfit?!!! Who cares!!

I agree re the CB position....but I don't know why you would make the comment about the manager, Antsman.

Both at striker and central defence, we have a bunch of decent players, but no-one that is truly top quality....maybe JVOH. Maybe.

The manager will know this as well. He won't say so for very obvious reasons. He might not do anything about it this window, for equally obvious reasons.

Have a wee bit of faith.....:)

Paul, I know that not everyone buys into your GOD theory. I do...a bit, but not completely. But I will if we make the CL and t'other mob don't. Any thoughts on how damaging that scenario would be for Edward's mob?

    Paul67,

As a believer in your GOD, I am beginning to think that we may be on the brink of what our manager has been promising us from Day 1: a team of fast, flowing football. Stuff of dreams. Scott Brown seems to be central to that. My mate, who predicted as much when we watched him kick us all over the shop at Parkhead (I only saw him kicking us) 4 years ago, said much the same about a very young Gordon Strachan who was then playing for Dundee. He reckons Brown will be every bit as good.

    Hello there

Long term reader, first time poster. Was listening to the radio feed (Thanks for the link by the way) and everyone in my household is rather pleased with the way things are going.

Have to agree with the need for a quality centre back. Cover at full back also required but from what I saw of the Basle game I thought Wilson and Naylor looked excellent.

I think if Rangers fail to qualify for the CL this year they will be in dire straits.

If that's the case I think we should buy Sionko off them, just out of fairness. :)

    My dear friend Cao...@20.27

Lenno was a complete waste of a position....

He slowed down the game... period.

He was a constant burr under my saddle.

I was ecstatic when he eventually was released.

    Patty Cake, Patty Cake Man!

I was at the game today.

I know that never in a million years, would Lenno have made the runs that we witnessed for at least Two of the Celtic Goals, today.

This Celtic Team is shaping up to be a brammer!
    And you can quote me.

    On second thoughts...forgetaboutit!

My reputation on this site is a somewhat truncated one....
Most of the contributers are under the mistaken impression that I know little or nothing about soccer!

They can believe what they want, but nevertheless, they will slowly begin to change their opinion, when they realise that I was 100 Per Cent right about their hero... Mr. Lennon..... whom, I have reviled to the past two years...

Also, I was right about the silly insipid and lazy performances, that were dished up by Mr. Petrov.... another drawbacker... if I ever saw one.

I am being proved correct about Petrov.... by the day...his star is fading at Aston.... he is a whiner and a sulker...period.

Pierre should be arrested for taking candy from a baby... the baby?...Why, Martin!.....
who may be a fine man manager, but his judgement concerning what constitutes excellence in soccer talent... is debatable!

    Think I am wrong?

    Join the club.

Watch how Martin's new Expensive recent signings pan out...
Then get back to me.. after next Season ends... and we shall talk again!

    And,need I remind you,my faithfull critics.....
Hold the rhetoric about what Martin accomplished at Celtic... it is last week's Laundry, which I have not the slightest interest in bringing to mind!

Last weeks' reminiscences, and 5 dollars, will get you a cup of Java at your local Starbucks...

    Nothing more.

Forget about the Past...I know it is a shock... But Martin's deeds at Celtic are all in the Past, and will never have any significance on Celtic's Future position in the League Table!

    Noel,

Your comment about Neil Lennon is spot on.
No disprespect to Neil, but my first thought on watching Skoosh slot away his goal was .....could Lenny have done that?
In fact, would Lenny ever have been that far up the pitch that quickly?

I know that it might sound like hype, but I am convinced that Skoosh will be worth double his transfer fee this time next year.

I can't believe some of the dross that was talked about him not being for us as he was 'Rangers minded'. (Kojo...Collie?).

Even if someone is Rangers minded, it doesn't make him a worse player.
He could really be the difference between us and THEM next season.

  • At 15/07/07 21:07, CelticSephiroth said…

From what I've read/heard Skoosh isn't a Rangers fan. Rather he was a member of a Rangers youth team as a boy. They messed him about and he sort of fell out with them after that.

    I might be wrong though.

As hamptontim quite rightly stated, who cares?

As far as the use of the word "dross" regarding my comments... I hasten to point out that my comments, at the time that I made them were,on the contrary.. very sensible and germane to the facts ,at that time.

Scott Brown is a Rangers diehard... that is a fact.. I do not wish go into the matter, but it is so.

I never at anytime, denigrated the Soccer Talent of Scott.... he is a wonderful player.

But, Scott Brown at things have turned out... refuted my conclusion regarding his choice of club.
In that I was in error.

    Howevvvvvvvah....

As Mr. Brown has made his choice, and is now a Celtic Player... I believe that what I have mentioned concerning his loyalties ....has now become a moot point...

It is time my friend, to move on, and stop digging up past imagined intimations ,that can be gleaned from my past writings by eager cavilers.

As a long time reader but only recent poster it is a pleasure to have stirred such a response from CQN's famous Kojo!!

As you'll see from my post above, I don't (and have never) proclaimed to be a "lover" - ooh er matron - of Neil Lennon. I stand by my statement though, that in "general" terms, Neil will go down as a great player for Celtic. Whether you or I agree with that Kojo is a different matter.

I'm not one for living in the past.

Martin O'Neill gave us some great memories (as did Stan and wee Shaun) but they are all Celtic history. It's up to us all as individuals to choose whether we remember them all - fondly or not, and fully support those involved with Celtic here and now.

We can agree and disagree who's good and who's bad, but when it matters they should all receive our support.

I realise and know that it's very early days (don't you just hate that cliche?) but I do honestly believe Celtic could be a wee bitty special this season......

Do yeez think ah'm a "happy clapper"?.......those that know me know I'm not, but it's nice to feel positive about this coming season.......and for that, I'll happily clap!! ;-)

Like others I'm trying not to go overboard on the basis of a few friendlies. But I will go as far as to say that we do seem to have the makings of a very good team in front of us. We still need full back cover, the one area I feel we are weak. And is there still a "Wow" signing to come?

August is a massive month for both us and that team on the south side. CL qualifiers and the beginning of the league season. The dream scenario would obviously be us qualifying and them not, and we build up a lead in the league. How soon would the press get on Wattie's back? How loyal would their fans be? Would Murray go into meltdown?

All will be revealed over the next few weeks.

Rintimtim, it sure is the dawning of a new era.

Caoimhin Dubh, you know, Generation of Domination does not seem so wishful than it did a couple of years ago. Some of us knew back then, it took a while for others to learn, some have still not figured it out.

Weeron, if the other lot fail to reach the CL, their implosion will be swift and complete.

Parkheadcumsalford, we have not had the players to play faster fitter football yet; I know where you are coming from with the current crop.

Welcome CelticSephiroth, good to hear from you.

Kojo, how far back do we want to go? Have you heard about the Decade-Dance?

The great years were years of control, not speed. It was 1997 we signed Paul Lambert, a firm, but mono-paced player. In 2000 he was joined by Neil Lennon, a similarly mono-paced player, we were blessed, but cursed.

The shadows grew long, the pace; the pace dropped.

    High time for a change.

    On the subject of Shaun…

I posted in April (I think) when I first heard of his frustrations at being 13th, 14th, 15th man in Birmingham. As nothing has happened since, I suspect that his chances of a return are diminishing. He was sold for £1m with only 6 months on his contract, but even as a bench player he is worth much more than this to Villa.

I would have him back, but the cost is likely to be prohibitive.

Also i agree with you re a swift implosin at rangers i know a dirty dozen of them who are all on the brink of chaos the slightest thing will tip them over, a couple of draws not making the CL.

Rangers fans it seems do not in the main comprehend the impact of our financial dominance and keep clinging to 2 old firm victories, walter being back and the fact the picked up more points than us since walter has been back

    Kojo and Noel,

I must agree totally with both of you in your comments regarding Neil Lennon.

Apart from my PET SUBJECT about certain players in a certain game, I am glad that Neil Lennon has left the club.

His style of play has long held us back.

His style fitted the Martin O'Neil style of football, but it never suited the Gordon Strachan style.

I think our manager courted and then tolerated Neil Lennon because he had to have a link between the MON era and his own team.

A lot of people think that the abuse Neil Lennon took over his time at Celtic should have guaranteed him an everlasting place in our team, but his ability to do his job should be the only yardstick used to ensure a place in the team.

I, for one, am glad he has left the club.

We will be a quicker, smoother running and much more attacking side this year.

I look forward to this new season with relish.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

Not the position that needs strengthening but it'd make me look good because I always sign him in managements games.

On Neil Lennon. A great player who I think hung around too long. His inclusion in the central midfield caused us alot of problems. I think Strachan wants two players in central mid who will play box to box. The sight of Neil Lennon high up the park, struggling to get back, was all too evident in the closing stages of last season. Still, that doesn't diminish his contribution to many successes over the years.

For the now, it's looking good in the middle of the park.

As I said he was at his best playing in a Martin O'Neil team where he and the likes of Diddier Agathe were not encouraged to cross the half way line.

His stlye of play DID NOT fit in with the Gordon Strachan style pf play.

Apart from the ones you mentioned, one of the best right halfs we ever had was Bobby Murdoch.

Outwith Celtic players, other great half backs that spring to mind were Dave McKay, John White and Danny Blanchflower.

    Hi, not posted for sometime.

Not a happy-clapper but for sure a glass half full man. However pre season friendlies nor transfer window "stars" encourage me to extrapolate (oh er missus!) successful careers or successful seasons.

I am encouraged by the signings and by some individual performances last year but as always we'll only know when the real stuff starts.

Many's the player I've seen who can strut their stuff when the opposition allows but when really put to the test can't hack it mentally. Probably more important is bringing everyone together to form a team - making the whole greater than the sum of the parts. For those old enough that's what Big Billy did in 1988. The Rangers squad was more glamorous with more individually talented players but just look what happened.

I am still enthused by what MIGHT happen but I'd suggest some on the blog might want to 'cool their jets' at least for a while.

Antsmanm a, “Wow!” signing is not being specifically sought. I predict a bitter Autumn for your Rangers supporting friends.

Kojo, do you know something? We in Scotland were the last to change to these new formations. I think this came from having been successful in the past, in particular, our team managers in the 1980s, who were successful players in the 1960s and 70s.

I watched the same formation line up week after week, year after year all through the 80s. Get thumped in Europe? Never mind, try harder next season.

Run all over Aberdeen but lose 0-1? They must have gotten lucky – again. ‘It will not happen the next time’ (two clubs from the North East learned quicker than the rest of us).

In answer to your question, “where did they go”, they went the way of the dodo. Their teams lost to opponents with less footballing talent but who outfoxed them.

The survival of the fittest meant that revision eventually reached the northern parts of this island.

The Hungarians threw the old rule book out back in the 50s. They made such an impact, not because they had 11 galloping officers in their team, they only had one, but because they played to a different tune than the rest of the world.

sure its nice to win playing sexy football as ruud guillit called it but it doesnt always happen and at times the sleeves need to get rolled up and the trench warfare needs to come in to play.
I saw the 4-2-2-2 barnes formation which was clueless from the outset and any boss with any savvy would put 2 men wide and stretch that big time hence our undoing time after time and the ramifications that happened during that time.
I feel that currently we are on the right lines with a bit of speed of thought being brought into things as well as speed of movement.
as other contributors have stated it was pedestrian last season and while I thank lenny for his service I agree that we have to move on as things got slower last year.

On Neil lennon. I think seeing young Mr Brown gallop up and down the park slotting in goals (and more to come I hope)a few guys are getting a bit hard on NL.

Yeah, maybe last season his legs were starting to go, a bit. But, he was always worth his place in the team for so many psychological, football related reasons,

I would have hated to play against NL. I think the games against AC showed his true worth. He was unnecessary against lesser teams, hence his sub v Dunfermline in the cup final. Milan were quality and NL could see danger before it happened (product of his upbringing?).

I think Scott Brown will be a sensation, but no comparisons please. Different players, 13 years in age apart and offering different, but equally valuable things to the team.

All had one thing in common when they arrived at Celtic. However no one born a Celtic fan has as big a grin on his face as wee Bertie when he utters the word "Celtic".

It's quite a compliment that joining Celtic is a life changing experience.

Well put. Let Neil Lennon's Celtic career lie in the history of the club, untainted by retrospective criticism of his naturally diminishing physical powers.

It happens to all sportsmen eventually and goes to prove how wise Larsson was to leave Celtic when he did, because he, too, would have become the victim of the axemen in the stands.

On balance, even allowing for his decreasing pace, Neil brought other attributes to the transitional team, which we hope will bear fruit next season. Mainly, his experience and reading of the game.

Alf Ramsey's England team are credited (?) with the demise of wingers in the British game.

    On Neil Lennon,

Taking aside the footballing merits of his replacements.

Who will replace the mental strength, drive, non acceptance of lost points, cajoling of passengers when games become bogged down.

Neil wore his heart on his sleeve when it came to Celtic having to win. Sometimes he overstepped the mark and that was used by his detractors and the media as a flaw in his make up.

I'm pretty sure Skoosh will be of the same mentality eventually. I hope he follows a similar path to Jock Stein where his probable/predictable treatment from family and friends now that he has made his choice, will lead him to find extra purpose and desire to succeed.

I wonder who, from the current squad will emerge as the leader or leaders on the park.

As I have said before on this blog Neil is above critisism due firstly because of his ability then also he must be 1 of the only players ever to take pay cuts to play for us and then the amount of abuse he has taken both off and on the field even from our own fans .

Against Milan this season he was our best player by a mile in both games.

Lets not get carried away in pre season games the same way some did last year.

PS I only found out today that Craig Beattie had left all the best and I hope you do well

I saw some great play at Loftus Rd today. Scott Brown was immense and galvanised the team. He is already what the Promising Petrov never consistently achieved and he will be a legend in the Hoops.

Good flowing football, composure and flair in most areas for most of the match and, at last, driving forward from midfield - it is looking good. Not convinced re Capone despite the goal, Miller would be asset for most team but will never make it with the Hoops and Kennedy is beginning to look as assured as before that killer tackle in the international match.

Can't see any point in retaining Balde, Miller, Jurawski, Jarosic, Hartley or Graveson but I'd have Maloney back cheap.

As a genuine happy clapper, I would still be backing the "cool your jets" view re pre-season form. After 4 games, no consistent pattern is there yet. 3 wins and a heavy defeat foretell nothing with any degree of confidence.

I have no objection to anyone crowing about our performances; I will be doing that myself to every Rangers fan I meet. But, amongst ourselves, let's have a wee bit patience to see how the team emerges from the squad training that's going on just now.

Our fans in the USA deserve, at least, one good performance from the team during the tour. They'll be playing players who are battle hardened in their own season, so the task will be harder than anything we've faced so far.

But, above all, we've got 2 more weeks to settle down to an 18-20 man squad to start the first dozen meaningful games, and those who fail to make that 18 to 20, such as the likes of Jim O'Brien, will be tested to commit themselves during reserve games to show that they are too good for that level and force a breakthrough.

    Looking forward to it already.

Kojo I am surprised at you. You know that if organisations do not change to meet new challenges they die. As a very brief potted history of why this change came about this is my recollection of it. Although I was aware it was going on the 54 world cup is a distant memory but I clearly remember the one in 58, Didi, Vava, Garrincha and of course Pele.

Alf Ramsey was an innovator but not as pivotal as suggested. The first nail in the coffin of the traditional British MW formation came from the Hungarian team of the early fifties. They had a wonderful centre forward Hidegkuti who played a deep lying role (The middle point of the W). At the same time the two inside forwards, Koscis and Puskas (the two bottom Points of the W) played as strikers. England regarded themselves as the best in the world having wingers like Matthews and Finney and a dominating centre half like Billy Wright so they were probably the best of the old order to be fair. Anyway when they met the mighty Magyars Wright was lost as Hidegkuti was thirty yards upfield from the postion where centre forwards were supposed to be and he was uncertain as to following him, when he tried his lack of pace was exposed, or staying put when Hidegkuti went past him at ease. Meanwhile the English wing halves could not cope with the positioning and fluid movement of the Hungarian inside forwards Puskas and Koscis, who were in fact their main strikeforce. After two mighty beatings 6-3 at Wembley and 7-1 in Hungary in 1953 the writing was on the wall for the traditional formation. The end came in the World Cup of 1958 where a wonderful Brazillian team played a fluid 4-2-4 formation that was eventually copied by virtually all teams, including those fielded by Jock Stein in his early years. Further innovation followed of course and modern formations are varied but are all founded on technique, intelligence and athleticism. In other words the old system had to die, as did its predecessor when Herbert Chapman’ Arsenal redefined the role of the centre half. The MW, regarded as traditional, actually only held sway for a relatively short period of around 30 odd years.

As you well know Kojo nostalgia is an expensive practice which is why it sells so well.

Greenlion2, are you implying that Larsson didnt merit a testimonial or that MacNamara was more worthy of one? Perhaps I've missed the point, but anyway...

As someone in their early-mid 20s, Larsson is by far and away the best player I have ever seen at Celtic Park. He played out of his skin for 6-and-a-half years (out-with injury) and made his intention to quit clear from the off.

MacNamara had 2.5 good seasons after signing, then one good season just before leaving. He was invisible for most of his ten years here. We all queued up and paid for his testimonial then he pee'd off down south the next day, or so it seemed. I hope he does well at Aberdeen, though, as I did think he was a good player, just that he wasnt that hungry to be a Celtic legend.

Testimonials are an outdated concept in today's game, but I'd pay all the money all over again just to watch Henke, and if ever he is in need of an organ-donor, I'll be down the Western Infirmary quick-smart to see if I'm a match.

I said at least twelve months before he left that he wouldn't hack it in the Premiership and remember being criticised for comparing him unfavourably with Shaun Wright-Phillips who is quicker, stronger and more skilful, and he is unable to hold a starting place in a top side.

I cannot understand why anyone would want a player like Maloney who isn't even Scottish International class. Spending money on such players only hands the league to Rangers on a platter.

England thought they were the best because they had given the game to the World and Johnny Foreigner could teach them nothing-hence their reluctance to take part in any of the early World Cups. They got a rude awakening in 1950,and Hell was well and truly slapped into them when they played the Hungarians.

Despite the efforts of teams like Wolves and ManUtd the FA remained very suspicious of involvement in any European club competitions for much of the 50s.

Alf Ramsay,at Ipswich and then at England, got great success through the simple practice of playing round pegs in round holes.England were'wingless wonders'because he didn't have Matthews or Finney to select,so he chose the tactics that would best suit the players he did have.

    Whatever happened to 4-2-2-2?

Traditionally, only players who have served a club for ten consecutive years are given the honour of a Testimonial.

I can think of no player, who survived his career, receiving such an honour, from any club, other than Henrick Larsson.

Jackie McNamarra was better than average. Way better, and since I dont know all the facts as to his leaving Id personally let it go. He stayed ten years and gave his all every chance he got. I always liked him. He earned his testimonial, to my mind anyway.

    Ah yes the "Jumps".
Some back courts had mighty reps as serious tests of nerve. I can remember travelling some distances to test out a backcourt we heard had big jumps. There were also the women who would lean out of their back windows and shout at you to get lost before they called the police. In an era where few people had phones far less mobiles I was never sure how they would do this but the said police would arrive from time to time. We could usually outrun them though across the washhouse roofs and if you were nervous of doing some jumps before fear lent wings.
DBBA arrogance was not an English preserve as the Scots had it as well. The 7-0 thumping by Uruguay in the 54 WC came as a real shock despite the fact they had won the WC tice previously.

I tried to send the photo's of the golf,I see you got adobe but no pics,I think I'll wait until your next visit to Celtic Park and we'll make arrangements for giving you the card from the camera.
I've not been able to post since I sent what I thought were the pictures.
I think I disrupted the exchange with the trouble trying to send the pictures.

    Taggs.
I have'nt got round to viewing your bunker shot...s.
But theres no way I'm going to erase that, thats for posterity, theres no big deal about taking a couple of shots to get out of a bunker, remember the pro at the open who took "I think" nine shots to get out of the bunker at the road hole at St Andrews, thats what I do when I've trouble in a bunker, I think of him.
If you want an embarrassing golf story, "I'm going to tell you it anyway".
It happened at Gleneagles on the first tee,We were on an outing,a group of twelve, all my so called friends and they were all good golfers, scratch up to five handicappers, myself, the worst player, playing of nineteen.unbeknown to me they had fixed it for me to go in the first group.
I had never played at such an illustrious golf course before, and my nerves were getting the better of me,I thought that they had fixed the draw, for me to go in the first group just to get me settled, as they knew I was a bag of nerves, but no,there was worse to come.
On the tee ....... I placed the ball.
My mate called me over and I thought he was trying to gee me up,but there was someone changing my ball as I had my back turned,I addressed the ball and hit a sweet shot but the ball exploded into a cloud of chalk,I was livid with rage and nearly departed the scene never to set foot on a golf course again.
I put down another ball and hit a cracker of a drive down the middle of the fairway, running to get away from my so called friends.
Theres nothing worse than the joke getting played on you,I would have laughed along with the next one If it had'nt been me.
we still talk about it to this day,In fact my mate came to see me just after I got home from Aberdour and it was mentioned then.

He performed a wonderful Master class in a central midfield role with one assist( turned the full back inside out twice) and a superb start and finish move.

He left the field after 60 mins when Japan were 4-1 ahead to a standing ovation from everybody( including the very partisan Vietnamese in the 60,000 crowd and rave reviews from the commentators who "knew nutting" but never mind . What a wonderful wee man he is and a very modest one at that. Can't wait to see him play with Broon, Aidan and Donatti. Kitalba,

I wasnt really trying to dig up any muck re MacNamara. I thought he was quite a good player, excellent on his day. I think he lacked hunger, and the fact that he never fulfilled his potential infuriated me. However, it's also my understanding that he had some difficult personal circumstances to deal with.

If the club offered him a unfair weekly wage, in relation to players like Balde, then it was his right to leave. After 10 years at one club I guess we cant blame him. However, why take the testimonial and then leave so sharply? And, worse still, why go running to the Record, telling everyone how unfair Celtic are, after they paid his wages and put up with his invisible man antics for the middle 5 years of his time there?

Good player. No hunger or grace. I hope he does a job for Aberdeen, but for those 4 times a season.

Fighting The Fuzz since 1888 - I share your feelings on McNamara. I thought he was a decent versatile player who served us well. Infact there was one season in particular under Tommy Burns where he & Simon Donnelly's understanding on the right hand side was a big factor in our attacking play. Latterly i think he wasn't cut out for the European stage as we seen away to Bayern Munich & at home in the 3-1 defeat to Barcelona where Ludovic Guily gave him a night to forget.

Like you I'm not too keen on trying to blacken the name of McNamara or any Celtic Player, but i do think that his Irish surname made him bullet proof to objective criticism. This kind of outlook is what really riles me about the scrutiny Gordon Strachan gets from many of his own support. If his name originated from the land beyond the sea or he'd previously worn the hoops, none of this nonsense would rear it's head.

For me the Knife in the heart was the way Jackie Mac & his agent (Darren Jackson)conducted business so cheaply through The Daily Record. Darren Jackson is another ex-celt with a short memory. When he was diagnosed with a serious brain illness, he received the best of care & support from the club & it's fans. For him some years later to publicly cheapen the club won't be forgotten as far as i'm concerned. McNamara had an opportunity after a bumper testimonial to bow out gracefully, but instead he took a course of action that was unforgiveable. I have more affection for his replacement - Paul Telfer. He arrived for £150,000 & was not fancied at all. He was a model professional, was part of two consecutive League winning teams & part of the team that made history by qualifying for the last 16 of The Champions League. At the end of it all, he was grateful for having been given the opportunity to play for a great Club & didn't feel the need to go running to the chip wrappers. The biggest compliment i can pay him is that the support privately recognise we need to address the right back position for the season ahead.

You have spoiled my memories though as I have been recounting that dummy by Tiny as being Charlie Callagher for many years.

Dontbrattback was actually spot on as the pitch was heavily sanded and the size of Celtic's win was attributed to the decision of several players to wear what we called "sandshoes" in those dim old days allowing them to be sure footed on a treacherous surface.Certainly I know Yogi wore them.

I have never ever been as confident of a Celtic win even though we were one down at half time. It was certainly one of those games when 10 would not have flattered us. We were that good.

    Police raid three football clubs
Police have raided three football clubs as part of an investigation into alleged corruption in football.
Newcastle United and rangers FC are believed to been raided but the third club involved has yet to be named.

The operation is not connected to Lord Stevens' ongoing Quest inquiry into the Premiership and was "totally independent", police said.

Search warrants were executed on the club premises and two homes between 0730 and 0900 BST.

A City of London Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that search warrants were served at three football clubs and the homes of two individuals in connection with corruption in football and its impact on owners and shareholders."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said they were aware that "an operation" had been carried out by their London colleagues at St James' Park, the home of Newcastle United.

A spokesperson for Rangers FC said: "Rangers football club was asked to co-operate with a City of London police investigation and have done so, extending every co-operation to police.

"We have been requested by police not to comment further while the investigation is on-going."

The police investigation in part relates to the Boumsong £8.5million "transfer" from Rangers.

Rangers were also raided by Strathclyde Police this morning.

Northumbria Police have raided apart from St. James Park two homes in Newcastle.

My police source says that two people "with the same surname" are being investigated along with a former Newcastle manager ( whose name starts with the same letter as the Newcastle 2) and a Scottish "super" agent based in France.

Journalists have long suggested that the Boumsong deal was bent. He went from a Bosman free transfer in the summer to a £8.5 million buy in the January transfer window, but only a small amount of the cash went into Rangers bank.

My sources say a chunk of it went offshore. Who then got it is open to conjecture, but I have more than a very good idea.

The trail has been opened by a 61-year-old man- nothing to do with football- who has been arrested for money laundering large sums of cash.

He has spilled the beans to London fraud squad not the Stevens inquiry.

Computers have been taken away from St. James and the two Newcastle homes but they are not looking for blue movies, just millions of missing blue readies.

It looks like Rangers and Newcastle have a lot of explaining to do.

PS: I know the names of those being investigated ( five in total) but for legal reasons will desist from naming them here. Feel free to guess, though and I will correct those that are wrong.

Their statement to the Stock Exchange is PR speak for some people no longer connected to the club (i.e two of the three) and another who is off sick.

The NUFC statement to the Stock Exchange reads:

You have made my YEAR!! I haven't seen footage of that game ever. It was one of the very few times I was ever watching from the old Celtic end. I saw every goal and that is about all. The fog was so thick. Big Yogi used to wear the sannies occasionally when the pitch was bone hard and when he was on his game (which no one could predict) he was unstoppable. To me, the class act, as ever, was Charlie Gallagher and, I know Bobby Murdoch was playing!!

Kojo mentioned two of my Dad's favourite players last night: Pat MacCauley and Joe Bailey. I never saw them but I feel the same about Charlie.

By the way, Tiny Wharton grew up with my Dad in Springfield Road. He was allowed to play football with the other lads because he had a ball.

Oh, the day only gets better: the Police have served search warrants on Rangers. Dignified or what!!!

Innocent until proven guilty, of course, but what a mess.

We have discussed the pack of cards that is Rangers finances, the tens of millions of pounds in goodwill and £139m property ‘assets’ that underpin them.

Rangers have been working on turning their finances around at a slow and managed pace. If their asset valuations are tested by a sale being forced, they could be in for a very short season.

Murray International Holdings (MIH) balance sheet is totally dependant on Rangers asset valuations. It the club suffers a forced sale exposing an inflated value; the trouble will rise to the holding company.

What are the chances of them doing any more transfer business this summer? I suspect practically zero.

Sean South, if your information is correct, that the police are investigating monies mis-appropriated the club is in real peril.

I have two words for you; Third Lanark.

This story has a long way to run; just when you thought the summer had been going our way!

    Paul,
the concerns re this transfer would flow from how the fee flowed. If the selling club forwarded a big chunk to someone else, there would be a Conrad Black issue.

Given that an individual cannot 'own' a player, then the club would have been doing a west ham during the time that the player was on their books.

Their only hope would be that the buying club paid the 3rd party.

  • At 16/07/07 17:43, Gordon_J said…

Am I correct in saying that all of the money from the Boumsong transfer did not end up in Rangers' bank? If so, then the allegations would appear to be against individuals involved in the club rather than the club itself, which was the alleged loser.

So I guess what we need is a Rangers shareholder to start making noises.

The rest of the summer culd be so much fun!

Dunno why, I just thought I'd look up two definitions, and the lyrics of a famous French song:

    glee, noun
    1. great merriment [syn: hilarity]
    2. malicious satisfaction [syn: gloat]

    schadenfreude \SHOD-n-froy-duh\, noun:
A malicious satisfaction obtained from the misfortunes of others.

The historian Peter Gay -- who felt Schadenfreude as a Jewish child in Nazi-era Berlin, watching the Germans lose coveted gold medals in the 1936 Olympics -- has said that it "can be one of the great joys of life."
-- Edward Rothstein, "Missing the Fun of a Minor Sin", New York Times, February 5, 2000

Schadenfreude comes from the German, from Schaden, "damage" + Freude, "joy."

    'Boum!
    Le monde entier fait boum
    Tout avec lui dit boum
    Quand notre coeur fait boum-boum
    '

"Scot Willie McKay negotiated the best sign-on fee to the player for Boumsong from Rangers, based in Glasgow, Scotland. The deal supposedly included a clause that, should Rangers sell Boumsong within a period of time (speculated as two years), that they would receive a large percentage of the sign-on fee returned.

    [edit] Rangers and Newcastle
As a result, Boumsong joined Alex McLeish at Rangers in 2004 and signed a five year contract. However, halfway through the 2004-05 season, Newcastle made an £8 million bid for him, which Rangers accepted in a deal that was finalized once the January 2005 transfer window opened. Boumsong signed a 5½-year contract with the Magpies. However, as Boumsong had played the requisite number of games for Rangers that season,

he still received a Scottish Championship Winners Medal, despite having been a Newcastle player for around five months by the time Rangers won the title."

Paul67 and Toonbarmy: Newcastle's take is that any corruption offence has been committed by an employee or employees of NUFC and not by the club or the plc (which will cease to exist by the end of the month when it goes private).

In other words they are saying the club may be the victim of any alleged corruption.

The new owner Mike Ashley is presently undertaking a forensic investigation of the club's finances headed by a lawyer, Chris Mort.

My information is the Boumsong deal is at the heart of the Newcastle investigation and that the Police are looking at the role of former manager Graeme Souness and the agent Willie McKay in that deal.

But Newcastle sources tell me that Rangers are the club under far more scrutiny.

The Boumsong money was paid to Rangers and the Police want to know who actually received it and whether the full £8.5million appeared in their books,

A Souness deal involving Amady Faye from Pompey to Newcastle is also high on the Police inquiry and, wait for it, three deals involving Souness, Blackburn and Rangers- Barry Ferguson,Lorenzo Amoruso and Tugay.

But I don't think we are looking at points deductions or titles being stripped.

It is an allegation of business fraud that is being investigated.... and Rangers, Murray, Bain, Souness and McKay that have the question to answer.

I'd appreciate if someone could post a link to their last set of accounts.

If the police decide to invistigate Mr Souness' role in the Boumsong transfer (Souness is innocent until proven guilty:-), you would think they may also look at the tranfers of Tugay, Ammarusso and wee Barry??

    Would make sense to me.

It is truly delightful watching Scotland's second biggest institution crumble before our eyes.

What does this say about a country that has turned a blind eye to its "132 years of unsurpassed dignity"??

I´d love to know what odds anybody is offering on Sir Minty Moonbeams going in the clink at anytime in his life?

GM summed it up. This kerfuffle will end up in Scotland as a dead end. Possibly Mc Bain losing his job and his Villa in France with Donald Findlay representing him in a typical damage limitation exercise. It will be reported in the Scottish press that Sir Minty was broken hearted about having to fire somebody for the first time in his philanthropic life etc.

I wonder how the cuurent Scottish manager might be implicated however. Wasn´t Eck responsible for recruiting Bernard, Bonnissel and a few other players that were associated with Portsmouth and NUFC ?

Considering that this isn´t exactly a shock to anyone of our newly educated financial whizz Khids following the Scottish scene closely ?. Does anyone else think that the managerial roundabouts associated recently with Rangers and the SFA might have been orchestrated with this all in mind.?

I´d like to see David Taylor under the spotlight of an inquiring journalist right now.

    What happ-ened to the mint?
    Every fiver they spend
    Double i'll recommend

    Oh the rangers are poor
    Less mon-ey than a whore
    Wae a face like Durrant
    Sell her body she can’t

    Oh the rangers are broke
    Now the fires we’ll stoke
To make sure that they pay
For the deeds they did dae.

That's enough for now, gotta go, You've Been Framed is starting.

I wonder could anybody suggest some reading material for a friend of mine who is going away for some time.I suggested The Trial but he rejected this as too heavy,He would prefer something with lighter sentences.

If Edward's not coming on here to entertain us, we might find some fun over here.

It looks like you'll have to type in Rangers and hit the yellow triangle to make this link work.

    Noel90,

    Depends in which court ?

My life - I'm a fool for you
    You who take no advice
    You who think evil
    doesn't exist
    Just because you
    deny it is true

    You're lucky I care
    For fools like you
    You're lucky I'm there
    To stop people
    doing the things
    That you know
    they're dying to do

    [ Lyrics provided by www.mp3lyrics.org ]
You know I am no stranger
I know rules are a bore
    But just to keep
    you from danger
    I am the law

    A dog must bark
    So evil calls
    Both in the wild and
    Within these walls

I registered and tried to post on Follow Follow.
    I posted a couple of probing question's.
Next thing ,"YOU HAVE BEEN BANNED"
    Ban will NEVER be lifted.

Just how they cottoned on to me so quickly is unbelieveable.

Or are they controlling the site so that no probing question's are allowed?

    Paul67,

We all know Sir Murky wants out of rangers but with developments today will it not be hard to sell the club right now or even in the future?

Also, is Mr Bain still not getting investigated by the French FA or police regarding the "wee loan" he got from a football player/agent?

That's a badge of pride. You should get that printed on a T shirt.

    To paraphrase one of Oscar's-
"One must have a heart of stone to read the death of little Dave without laughing"

Paul67, been MIA for a good while but the recent developments brought me out.

OK since their not listed on the SM
what body do they have to report to (AIM). You have reported that their P&L accounts have been... creative.I'm not going to ask you questions that you can't answere but as Kojo(fitba) implied, somebody must look into their "creative accounts"

    Terry O'Neill
Keep your powder dry young man,the rats are just hiding.Get them in your sights and open fire with both barrels.

Had my ear chewed off by an Orc,he's not best pleased with Sauron "alleged" involvment. Kept telling him it wasn't Minty's fault that the Beast had @*$^%£* them. Though he really went of on one... ach well.

When i said that their organisaton was morally corrupt ANYWAY--he put the phone down! Obtuse.

    Parkheadcumsalford/Derbyshirebhoy-

I've read your accounts of this game-also Chennaise,Martin,Gordon and a few others-

it made fascinating viewing and I couldn't believe Tiny Whartons "dummy" for Bobby Murdoch to score.

Considering Celtic were just rising from the dark ages and it was against a very good Rangers team-it was some performance.

The conspiratorial sceptic in me,think's that they are really scared of what's going on.

I would love to think that the police, have the technical ability and the foresight,to be monitoring the phonecalls made today ,between,Sir Minty,The Beast,Martin Vain,Wullie McKay,Harry Rednapp, and The cardigan.

    They must be bricking it.

    Druiddude, “Peeragetoporridge” :-)

Gerry, the problem with Murray selling Rangers is that he needs to get enough money to allow him to back out without the who ‘pack of cards’ (how many times can I say that in one day) collapsing down around him.

If the rug is pulled from under him (not that one Kojo) the whole kit and caboodle will end up in the hands of the bank, and that will not be pretty.

I have never been fond of royalty, but I am relating to Her Majesty in a new way now; I too think he is worth a knighthood.

Mick, Rangers accounts need to be audited and submitted to Companies House. This has been done and there is not reason to believe anything dodgy has happened here, though I have my own views on the valuations of their property assets and goodwill.

Stay tuned, the next few days should be interesting.
