Three-in-a-Row Charity Golf Day report

Congratulations to all who contributed to the Three-in-a-Row Celtic Quick News Golf Day, which was a roaring success.

Over £1500 £2100 was raised for Glasgow the Caring City, including £740, which was raised on ebay for a 40th Anniversary of Lisbon Celtic top signed by Stevie Chalmers and an initialled training jacket from legendary Celtic captain Danny McGrain.

A commemorative 100th Cup Final neck tie, signed by Celtic goal scorers Frank McGarvey and Davie Provan was auctioned on the night for £200.

A big thanks to those readers who contributed prizes for the golf, auction and raffle, you are an exceptional group of people.

It was an absolutely great night which captured the best of the unmistakably Celtic spirit regularly seen on Celtic Quick News.

I am sure everyone who attended last night would like to join me in thanking Taggsybhoy, Jonnybhoy, BlantyreKev and Albert Kidd for their excellent work in organising the event, as well as the staff of Aberdour Golf Club, who gave us a very warn welcome.

Thanks also to Noel and Estadio for providing Live Updates from Peterborough.

Stop posting upside down, I am wrecked this morning and that has just made me fall down off my seat, twice.

In addition to what Paul has said above we had a raffle and an auction on the night that were not included in the total and I am pleased to tell you the sum total was in fact £2,100.

For me the day is fantastic because despite never having met a lot of the guys you are immediately at ease and among friends. Some guys turn up and make contributions and gestures unexpectedly. Some turn up and add incredible character. Some are really crap golfers, some are very good, some don't play. It doesn't matter. Some work very hard in the background. It is just a great, Celtic day.

    Well done all.

The bus home was, em, an experience!

I have just now been listening to an interview on RTE radio (Marian Finucane show hosted by Rachel English)with your old friend Nicky Campbell ,Guardian journalist ,BBC presenter, and Hearts supporter.

He has written a biography in which he discloses that he was adopted. On tracing his biological parents he discovered that they were Irish.

It came somewhat of a surprise to him to learn that his father was an IRA man from the 1956-1962 campaign .He also reveals that he attended the funeral of a cousin who was in the IRA and shot dead by the British army in South Armagh about 1984(I think). He has forged a warm relationship with his biological father.

Apart from his footballing allegiances he seems a pleasant man who does a huge amount of charity work for the adoption agency in Britain.

I`m sure our friends in Gorgie Road must be gobsmacked.

On this day in 1969 the so-called'Soccer War'between El Salvador and Honduras broke out.

The war broke out on a background of longstanding tensions between the 2 nations, rather than being simply the result of the WC qualifier which El Salvador won after a third play-off tie in Mexico.Hostilities lasted less than a week but almost 2000 people, including civilians, were killed with many thousands more being displaced.

El Salvador went to the 1970 WC in Mexico, but didn't progress from the group stage, losing all their games and failing to score a single goal.

In the daft wee preview that comes with today's DR Scotland's finest give their predictions for the season.11 out of 12 predict a Celtic Championship[including Traynor,Keevins and Jackson].The dissenting voice is some guy called Chris Roberts.2 of the 12,incl KJ,think Celts will do the double, and some guy called Gordon Parks is clearly allergic to succulent lamb as he predicts another quiet year for the silver polishers of Paisley Road West.

Well done to all excellent CQNers for the money raised at the golf/dinner.It's already on my'to-do'pile for next year.

Just up after last night's shenanigans.

Blantyrekev, Brilliant news on the fundraising!

That's 3 in a row now, but yesterday, in my opinion was the best yet.

As a club member, I'm always sensitive of the good name of Celtic being enhanced by our bhoys. I don't think Aberdour GC has ever in its 111 year old history had a group booking like the CQN!

We had 25 golfers and 7 guys at night. We arrived at 12pm and left at 12am. We drank the amount of beer and wine one expect from a travelling Celtic support. We were cheerful and friendly. We left a huge tip for the staff, all of whom, even the Rangers supporting chef, thought we were brilliant.

Between the golf and the 5's we've created something special here guys, no doubt about it. Pat yourselves on the back lads!

Can I do, like TT before me (great stuff TT!)some thanks?

My playing partners; Burnley78 and Vargashampoo.

Now, that's the kind of banter I like during a round of golf. None of this stuff about R & A rules or how immigrants are taking over the country, but who we're gonna sign next, how big a chube Tommy Graveson is, 6 Music, Stuart Maconie, European tours. A blast from start to finish.

And what a start I had! Honest guys, I did improve after that first tee shot, in fact I hit my best ever first 9!

Couldn't sustain it for 18. That's why Paul McP is the champ again. Well done Paul! Paul, if you read this, let me know what that 14clubs driver is like. It certainly looks and feels beautiful.

Oldtim67. Thanks for coming out and sharing your birthday with us. Buying us all a drink was an unnecessary, but much appreciated great touch. (Oh, and forget about that photie of me trying to get out the bunker).

Barassiebhoy. Wee Conor is a star.

Johnnybhoy. A pleasure to be at your table, I owe you a couple of bottles of red. My heid tells me I must have scoffed a fair bit of it!

Blantyrekev. You have a brilliant head for sums. We'd never have made that money for GTCC without you.

Tinytim. For a non-golfer that was the best golf shirt I have ever seen in my life! Where did you get it! David Monaghan. He washed down your dinner with all the Stella in my garage. He then got up this morning at 8, got driven to Stevenston by Barassiebhoy for a tee off at 11!

    Celticlover. Peerless!

The Brennans. Thanks again for giving us this collection of blokes. Paul, if you ever get fed up with internet hardmen, please remember the CQN Open.

I didn't get the chance to blether to everyone, but all the guys I did catch a quick word with were brilliant.

    Hi Paul

Enjoyed your speech from the heart yesterday but I had to smile when you mentioned that one of your earliest memories (if not the first) was when Celtic were not Champions. The "men of wisdom" who were dotted around the tables last night (Jimtim,Oldtim,Martin44,TFsenior,etc)must have thought what a wonderful world we let our children grow in! Most of us would have the memory of when we became Champions not when we were not.

My own memory is having to wait until 1965/66 although the title win in 1953/4 is vaguely in my memory.

    A long, long wait Paul.

P.S. The great Simon D. played 181(quite a few as substitute) but managed to score 42 goals. In 1996/7 he had the most assists than anyone else. What a pass to set up Lubo's first goal.

I attended the evening part of the yesterday's golf day.

Aberdour is a wonderful venue. It is very picturesque, and the food was excellent value for money.

A special thank's should go to the organising committee of Blantyrekev,Newtaggsybhoy, and Jonnybhoy. Also to Alebrt Kidd.
They helped raise a tremendous amount of money for charity.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, with the following due an extra mention.

We truly are, the best behaved supporters in the world.

Oldtim67 ,who donated several expensive bottles of booze for the raffle. Also despite it being his birthday,he bought everyone a drink.

Jimtim ,for providing a truncated impression of a, Gwyneth Paltrow ,Oscar acceptance speech.

Paul67, who informed us that he will be 48 when Celtic do 10 in a row.He also received a letter of thanks from Peter Lawell. The man is very well connected.

I don't play golf ,but the Maltwood clubs looked very impressive. If i ever i take up the game.this would be one of my first purchases. These were magnificent prizes, donated by a very generous individual.

A very humble but generous man ,also donated two seats in the directors box for the opening league match of the season.

This prize was won by my very, very, very, good friend Baba.

We are still awaiting the stewards enquiry into Kevin Brennan winning the lunch with Gordon Strachan.
If he has any decent genes,he will donate this to, the much more worthy Martin42.
Alternatively i think that i, would make an excellent dining companion for Mr Strachan.

Barrassie bhoy attended with his own wee bhoy, Conor (aged 4).

He spoke very eloquently about the late Bill Ford.
He also told a great ditty about his exertion's to make the CQN golf day.(both financial and physical)

Throughout this Conor behaved better than Jonnybhoy.

I also had the pleasure to speak to thismancraig. For the ladies who post, the bhoy is far to good looking for his own good.
Despite his male Bimbo goodlooks, this bhoy know's his fitba.
He also collared me about Mr Strachan. He did have a few good point's.

Heraldo ,myself,Scott,Baba and Bobbishop, watched Dave (the human disposal unit)Monaghan eat his own dinner, then everyone elses.

The star of the night, yet again ,was Celticlover.
The retired retail mogul, has surley missed a fabulous career, in after dinner speaking.

All in all my sincere thank's to the the committe of Kev,John, and John.

Boys - what a magic day that was in Aberdour. Thanks to Taggsybhoy & Burnley 78 for their company out on the course & CelticLover for his best impersonation of Woody Allen during the prize giving - that was something else. If you're ever asked to do the Scottish Cup draw it would be worth watching. Celtic would get a bye into the final & Rangers would be removed from the competition for no reason- haha

Paul - it must give you real satisfaction seeing people come from far & wide doing something for a good cause & at the same time meeting new gems & all in the true spirit of Celtic. A day like that really reinforces what it means to follow the Celtic

Mick (Calton Tongues) - I really appreciate you getting us to Aberdour & back. The journey home reminded me of what it used to be like following the hoops to away games - Going to Tannadice on a wednesday night in the pouring rain knowing that a victory was unlikely, yet you still sung your heart out & stayed right behind the team.

Finally I think a special word should go to the people at Aberour Golf Club who embrace us every year & generally make us very welcome. To come across a Golf Club with such a positive outlook is very rare. As many of you will know Golf Clubs are riddled with Wee Men & Ex Headmasters who take great pleasure in exerting authority & reminding you of medievil rules that must be adhered to in the Clubhouse or you will be given 6 of the belt. It speaks volumes for Aberdour Golf Club that in the 3 years we have not faced any such nonsense

    Tinytim,

Varga's S,only paraphrased what was really said about some(most) golf club officials and their committees.

My admiration for the people of Aberdour Golf Club knows no bounds.

Between the finish of the golf and the start of the meal about a dozen of us were blethering about golf clubs and their officials and rules, (written and unwritten).

I said that in my opinion most were very sectarian in their make up and outlook.

However, I wondered aloud how I would have felt if I was a member of a golf club and a group of Rangers supporters turned up to take over the course and lounge for a day.

All the golfers were given hooped Head Covers as gifts and they were extremely prominent , 25 golfers all with Celtic Hooped Club Covers mulling around the first tee whilst the rest of the members went about their business.

I wondered how I would have felt had the alternative been the case.

It made me question myself and my level of tolerance.

I sincerely hope I would have come out of such a situation with some credit.

On a lighter note Tiny, you and Taggsbhoy summed up the day perfectly.

We are a great bunch of supporters.

I urge all, golfers and non golfers, to make every effort to attend next year, just ask Oldtim67, this was his first year and bhoy did he enjoy himself?

The organising committee done a fabulous job, but no matter how well a thing is organised, if people do not turn up and enter into the spirit, the function will flop.

Well the Third C Q N GOLF DAY certainly did not flop. It was the best yet.

The committee and those who attend just keep getting better.

I loved every minute of it and look forward to the Fourth C Q N Golf Day.

    Cheers,

    Martin42.

    PS TINY,

yopu are right, the prize should be given over to the WISE ONES(courtsey of Celticlover) but I have my doubts.

Your comments re. how would Celtic supporters feel if their club was invaded by the 'Blue Folk' are spot on. I know you had time to ruminate whilst the golf was on but I'm sure your perspicacity came about by the wisdom you know have. How your sons must look on with envy as these pearls flow from you (MI6 excluded of course!).

I do hope you are correct with your comments about how nice the staff are as I now find myself the embarassed owner of 3 clubs which the Pro kindly allowed me to test. I specifically instructed my playing partners Albert Kidd and Paul(the greenkeper) to remind me when I finished to hand them back! They have let me down badly.

Taggysbhoy, Pls let them know that they are in the hands of a very trustworty person, albeit a little forgetful at times.

CITY OLD BOYS TO PLAY IN MEMORY OF CAMPBELL

    BATH CHRONICLE

    08:00 - 30 June 2007

A Memorial football match between Marshfield Nelson and a Bristol City XI is taking place on Sunday, July 22.The game is in memory of Gary Campbell, a former Bristol City trainee in the early 1990s, who died a year ago at the age of 33.

Born in Glasgow, Campbell played for Celtic as a junior before moving to Ashton Gate, however injury curtailed his career before he could play for the Robins' first-team.

Campbell joined Bath & District League side Marshfield, where he became a first team regular and popular figure at the club.

The memorial match will raise money for Cancer Research and will see a team of Campbell's former Bristol City colleagues taking on Marshfield, refereed by ex-Bristol Rovers defender and BBC Radio Bristol host Geoff Twentyman.

At half-time there is set to be a penalty shoot-out between former Bristol Rovers players and some Bath Rugby stars, and an auction will be held after the match.

Marshfield Nelson chairman Bill Holbrook said: "Following the initial shock, our club have now been looking at ways of honouring Gary and will name a perpetual trophy after him, to be presented

"Our dearest hope is to raise as much money as we can for Cancer Research, a charity very close to Gary's heart, and create something positive out of his tragic death."

For more information about the event or to make a donation for the auction, call Mike Phillpott on 07989 969144, Tony Cook on 07753 931714, or Shane Andrews on 07919 375554. Alternatively, you can write to Shane Andrews at 13 Withymead Road, Marshfield, nr Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN14 8PA.

setanta should not forget that it was thanks largely to Celtic fans and their subscription to their initially awful service that allowed them to get going

surely Celtic against an MLS select should be on the tele?

I checked your link and it states that the QPR game is delayed coverage at 6pm on Setanta 1.

I'm sure that it was on my Sky listings for Setanta at this time but it has now been changed to N. Ireland v Everton.

Now that ESPN 2 is covering the MLS game and FOX is covering the Chicago game then we might get them here.

    Tinytim,

You asked about the bus journey home.

Are you familiar with the song "Grace" It is a song about loss, pain and suffering.
I am at a loss to describe just how painful it was to listen to. I am still suffering.

Also on our bus was a bhoy called Gerry, from the peoples republic of Clydebank. By the time we reached North Lanarkshire he was lovingly being referred to as "deid" Gerry, having undertaken a self embalming project, using red wine as a preservative.

If you are concious again and reading this Gerry, the lumps on your head are not due to a mugging or anything. We just couldn't get half a dozen sets of golf clubs out from the back seats without bumping them aff your napper!

Also there IS a song called The Lid of yer Granny's Bin, I didn't make it up, just forgot the words.

Some highlights for me were rumbling through the picture postcard, idyllic streets of Aberdour, past the tartan tearooms, antique bookshops and tweed wearing ladies, as Calton Tongues crunched up the gears in his armour plated, diesel guzzling, battle weary Tim carrier with the Soldiers Song blaring out to sound our arrival.

The ruined walk with Brian and Calton Tongues. The craic at our table. The speakers were top class.
The chants of "Tinytim" when one of the prizes announced was a meal with WGS.

Cheers to jimtim and Oldtim for the hangover. Two diamonds.

I hope Celticlover's lover is fit again for next year, her absence yesterday meant Celticlover was left unsupervised, unmedicated and unfathomable for the entire day. Worth the entrance money alone.

Like you I'm annoyed at whatever is happening and suspect that Setanta will not be quite so attentive to our needs in future.

It would be very intersting to know just what percentage of Setanta's customer base Celtic supporters actually represent at the moment. It could help us perhaps determine whether any organised protest could achieve a change of attitude. I suppose with a bit of effort through fan sites we could estabish the Celtic numbers and compare it with Setanta's subscriber numbers which I presume they'll publish as part of their annual report?

    Any good one liners?

John Gaghan, the ex Motherwell man is quite good. He said that his father wasn't a man of many words,in fact he said to him one day "John......."

Brian Mcginlay, the ex ref, told a story that Davie provan was being wound up by Alex "Doddy" mcDonald during an old firm game to which Provan replied "You're that crap I could keep a beach ball aff ye in a phone box!"

Like to add my thanks and congratulations to everybody on the Golf Day yesterday, the committee do a sensational job - from Kev turning up on the Broomielaw to collect my cash to everybody on the day...thanks a million!

Anybody out there who is within a half a chance of getting there, do yourself a favour and turn up. It matters not if you have golf clubs or just want to laugh at the variety of green (well, maybe even turquoise) tops out there. Make it as much a part of your CQN life as logging on every day.

I've had many an argument with Tinytim (13.10 today) on here, a great guy to meet...

''the bhoy is far to good looking for his own good.
    Despite his male Bimbo goodlooks...''

Perhaps I'll need to listen carefully next time he speaks, he obviously knows his stuff...

Glad the weather turned out good at the Loch Heraldo, Balloch is a larger version of Aberdour tonight...Paradise relocated!

Paul @ 17.08 - apologies and noted. Please forgive my "school boy error" as a rookie on your site.

Derbyshirebhoy and pfayr - I too share a fear that Setanta's coverage of the EPL will slowly muscle out the SPL coverage. The dropping of our game v QPR tomorrow which was originally scheduled to be covered live is hopefully not a sign of things to come, although I'd love to know what the thinking behind this was (eg drop live coverage of a friendly game to show a repeat of a game played the day before). It would be interesting to see what the comparative viewing figures would have been with the Everton game versus the Celtic game. I'm sure the Celtic game would have one this hands down.

I watched a bit of the Everton game this afternoon and Middlesbrough are getting humped 3-0 by Schalke just now, but at the half-time break Setanta were promoting their future coverage of the EPL big time. It's fair to say that they're obviously trying to appeal to a new audience, but they shouldn't make the mistake of forgetting their existing SPL audience without whom they may not have been able to bid for any EPL deal in the first place.

It will be interesting to see how Setanta's football coverage over the coming weeks pans out.....

i agree entirely , but i suspect that even our substantial number may be diluted to insignificance if they get even a moderate slice of the premiership market.

however i just don`t get why the U S games are not on Celtic tv...if games of type are not being shown then Celtic tv is next to worthless , unless you want to watch persistant reruns (which are ok the first few occassions....how many times do you want to watch a game against Dundee from 2000 )or listen to some pundit stating the obvious

  • At 14/07/07 19:04, justnippedootfuraminute said…

I too share the fear that the EPL factor will overwhelm coverage of the SPL. Will this mean Celtic games being shunted to weekday nights ? Don't bet against it.

These guys only understand subscriber numbers, so you might want to email customerservices@setanta.com and remind them who has kept them afloat so far.

Cheers to Calton Tongues for getting us there and back home in the wee small hours.
Cheers to The Greenkeeper for the 'everything rolls to the sea' tip. Sadly it didn't help me enough.

Celticlover - Thanks for a truly memorable round of golf. Next year there should be an auction to see who gets to go round the course with you. Something that everyone should get to experience. A walking rule book. Thanks also for the tips on my golf. I will put them all into practice. You should try some of them too by the way.
I don't remember anything about any clubs you 'borrowed'. So don't blame me ! :-)
I do remember some things you said in your speech though :-

".....he managed to hit the ball 6 inches and that's only because he had the wind behind him."

"I'm not going to read out scores but the following people should be ashamed of themselves......"

I don't know about one liners, but one of the funniest comments i have ever heard at a match ,came out of the old jungle.

I was standing right at the front of the jungle.
Our view had been obstructed by the passing bobbies and StJohn's ambulance guy's.

From time to time they were getting pelted with spent bit's of macaroon bar and chewing gum.

I think the idea was just to get them to move from about a bit.
There was no real malice intended.

Anton Rogan took a dull one on his right ankle.
I was only 10 ft away. You heard the bone crunch and Anton's scream.

Anyone who saw Anton play can vouch for the fact that he didn't feign injury.

Anyway ,Anton being Anton,he didn't role about in agony.

He was on his knees ,backside in the air(the Doggy position i'm told)He had his hands clasped firmly behind his head, with his forehead being pushed into the ground.I presume to cope with the immense pain that he was in.

After about five seconds where he never moved.

This bhoy behind me shouts to the St John's guy.

    "fur F### sake,dae sumthin.
    His F###### heid's stuck."

On the same theme of one liners, my pal was returning from a golf outing at 4.00 am! Club bag draped over his shoulder. He was stopped by a police car and qusetioned as to where he was going. Paul, and Martin.
Thanks for your company when the golfers were out on the course, nice speech at night Paul, hopefully your wrong about "this may be Gordons last season,"comment that would be a loss to Celtic Football Club.
There's far to many to thank individually.

You made the presentation of the prizes a joy to watch, the repartee between tables and yourself, you made the presenting of the prizes a fun thing.
Blantyre kev.I'm glad to have met you,What I'll remember most is your smiling face when you post from now on.
John, taggs, and the rest who were at the same table a pleasure to meet you.
I could go on thanking people, but thank you everyone for such an enjoyable day.
Finally who ever thought of the cake, you nearly had me shedding a tear,I fought them back, but I had'nt the courage to open the card, that was kept for the privacy of my home, and I'm glad I did, it was overwhelming, thanks to everyone for making it such a good day and I'll be back, maybe with my clubs in tow next year.
