Wage inflation a spectre for Celtic to avoid

What a difference in our non-prime playing staff in a few years. Selling a fringe player like Craig Beattie for £1.25m, plus bonuses, is a world away from where we were as recently as 2004, when the South Stand at Celtic Park was busy with Joos Valgaeren, Ulrik Laursen, David Fernandez, Bobby Petta and Magnus Hedman, all marooned by contracts worth well more than they could hope to attract elsewhere.

Getting wage levels wrong back then cost Celtic more than just money, as the club were bereft of resources to build on the progress made in the previous years. Despite income increasing year-on-year, losses continued to mount.

Attempting to get wages right can be a perilous business, as demonstrated by the extended and ultimately unfruitful negotiations with Shaun Maloney. If you want to guarantee a player re-signs, make an offer he cannot refuse, but doing so leaves the spectre of Bobby Petta type contracts hanging over finances.

If Celtic continue to win the league and perform well in Europe, wage inflation is inevitable. Paying higher wages is an easy way for the club to give the fans what they appear to want in the short term, but it will be a portent of decline when we can no longer sell a fringe player to a lower league team in England.

If Celtic can avoid the cyclical nature of payroll expansion and decline, they will be far more prosperous in the long run.

It's a startling aspect of the generation of domination. Someone made a valid comparison yesterday between Craig Beattie and Jamie Smith, but we didn't get anything for Jamie.

We seem to be in a decent position at the moment regarding moving on players who are not first team choices. I'd say we could sell Miller, Balde, JJ & TG to upper Championship/lower Premiership clubs in England. Zurawski is probably one we'd struggle with.

The time is about to fall for the English clubs who are spending money as if there is no end to it.
The £27m Liverpool paid for Torres, can they recover their money if Torres does'nt fit in at Anfield, he could be another Graveson,Great player but not fitting in at Celtic Park, would another team pay £27m to take Torres of Liverpools books,I doubt it,Liverpool will burn their fingers when Torres is moved on,The same goes for all the other big priced signings being snapped up by these big spending English clubs,Frank Lampard refusing to sign another contract at Chelsea, who can walk for nothing when his contract is up,and what club is going to pay his £125.000pw salary.
The bubble will burst and sooner rather than later.
Celtic are benefitting from the madness thats going on down in England,Beattie to WBA for £1.25m going up to £1.75 with add ons,Talk of Graveson, and Jiri, going for £3m a piece,Marshall to Norwich for £1m.
    It goes on and on.
I can see Celtic, before the close of the transfer window buying the WOW signing, and maybe more signings over and above.
Good days being a Celtic supporter, champing at the bit for the season to start.

    3/7/07 3.35 Tiny Tim (in particular)/Great Auk

Are you suggesting that because some of his signings have not succeeded thus far that Gordon Strachan is a poor manager? If we follow this arguement, then so was Martin O'Neill,(David Fernandez, Momo Sylla, Steve Guppy, Michael Gray); Jock Stein, (Roy Kay, John Dowie, Jimmy Bone,Joe Fillipi, Roy Baines, and others in between, David Hay having bought Jim Melrose and Brian Whittaker.

Your arguements appear to take a scattergun approach! Make some wild criticism and maybe by chance you may stumble upon a valid point. In my view, you have been wholly unsuccessful in this endeavour.

With regard to Rigters you seem to approach this based upon what you have read in the papers, not always a good idea. Whos said he was a legitimate signing target? Gordon Strachan? Peter Lawell or some other Celtic spokesman? No! Earnie Stewart, the player's agent and the Daily Ranger. We may have had a look at him and have had some initial interest, but we never made a bid for him. This is despite the first reoports of any interest being a few weeks go. This suggests to me that Gordon Strachan was not convinced, even when it appeared a fee of some £300,000 or so could have secured his services. On this issue you have no concrete facts to back up your arguements.

In my view your whole post lacks facts, containing only opinion.

From my reading of your post it seems you do not like Gordon Strachan, therefore, any opportunity that presents itself to criticise the manager you would take it. You may well have valid points to make and constructive criticisms of Gordon Starchan, but they in my opinion, are not present in your post.

With regard to squad players I would argue that we do need more of these. In the full back positions, for example, we have no clear alternatives to Lee Naylor and Mark Wilson, who it appears will be the first choices in these positions. We need back up there.

You criticise the manager for going after Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank, (i'm not terribly bothered that he went elsewhere). He is obviously close to the end of his career, but given his record I would argue he could have scored goals for us.

I don't know what you were driving at with your Jiri Jarosik and Jan Vennegor of Hesselink comments? I would be interested to know what the comment regarding going for one type of player then signing another was about, as I am unclear what you were getting at.

Finally and this my seem a bit of a harsh comment, but your statement that Walter Smith has the upper hand with regard to signings over Gordon Strachan is completely ludicrous and cannot be substantiated.

You continually make assumptions and speculate about the manager's actions, but provide no concrete facts to back up your arguements.

You appear to be confusing fact with opinion.

Oh aye and as for you Auk. It is not The manager's fault for strikers tally drying up.

    OldTim,

Similarly, Chelsea are losing 50% of some of their player values in one year (Shevchenko, Boulharouz).

We are for the first time cashing in on superfluous members of our squad such as Varga, Wallace, Beattie, Marshall etc, for on average £1m per player.

Even Rangers couldn't afford our squad players these days as their 'blue chip' signing.

    The future's bright.........

Celtic's WOW signing would'nt be in the middle bracket of the English signings.
If Celtic goes for someone in the £4-£5m bracket, I'll be the first to say WOW.
As I did when we signed Scott Brown,Scottie was a WOW signing for me.

Depends on your definition of WOW but a relatively unproven player from Hibs is not a WOW signing in my book.

Having said that I am pleased with the signing of Brown and would gladly avoid WOW signings as I fear they'd turn out like Gravesen.

I said WOW because it seems to be the done thing when talking about a signing thats priced £4-£5 on here these days.
I was a bit reluctant to write what I did about Graveson but it was used as a comparison.
Graveson in my eyes is a good player,I think his problem with us was, he tried to hard to please the support which he loves,
    If thats possible.

Norwich City have completed the signing of goalkeeper Celtic David Marshall for an undisclosed fee.

"I'm delighted to be bringing a keeper of David's calibre to the club," said Norwich boss Peter Grant.

"There was a lot of discussion between Celtic and Norwich. At one stage we didn't think it was going to happen."

The 22-year-old was on loan at Norwich last season but his season came to a premature end when he was injured in an FA Cup tie against Chelsea in February.

Celtic rejected an initial offer from the English club, who went on to secure Rochdale's Matthew Gilks.

But manager Grant insisted that he was still pursuing Marshall, who is keen for regular first-team football to rekindle his international career.

And after signing his man, Grant added: "He is a quality addition in a position which can earn you 10 or 15 points in a season."

Marshall was sent out on loan in January after being forced to sit on the bench by the form of Poland goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

Marshall, who made his Celtic debut in 2003, made 49 appearances for the Scottish champions.

In 2004 he saved a penalty taken by Ronaldinho in a Uefa Cup tie against Barcelona but lost his place to Boruc under Gordon Strachan.

Can't make my mind up about whether TG tried too hard or after kicking his heels with Real Madrid thought the SPL would be a dawdle and just doesn't have the right attitude.

Maybe the manager who signed him for Everton would want him ?

I reckon that the big bonus in selling David Marshall is the near certainty that we will start next season with Big Artur still between the sticks.

If Artur was for the offski, I don't think that Marshall's sale would have gone ahead.

Best wishes to David Marshall in the future - but if he wants to stay fit, he needs to go easy on all that home cooking stuff that Delia serves up.

I agree - I think the performances up to TG signing for RM were what brought him to Celtic Park not how he played at RM - But at the time I thought that was more than enough too. But he became a tactical liability with his headless chicken schtick. Then WGS rested him for a while. I wondered if a spell on the bench, removing all thoughts of 'I'm a first pick player', would have made him listen more to his manager - Nope headless runaround now.

Ah well, he raised the calibre and arena of signings we were and are now accustomed to.

PS is the donate a strip charity still available - does anyone have details?

    Cheers

    U.

TG at times last season played really well. Most of the time he was poor however there were always a few moments where his quality shone through. He plays a lot of clever passes that most players wouldn't see or be quick enough to react to. His form needs to be a lot more stable though if he's going to remain at the club.

Jarosik on the other hand for me would need to change completely to fit into the Scottish game, it's not just a form/shape of the team thing for him and I'd get shot of him ASAP.

I'd be ok with TG staying as long as his form improves (I think it will with a new shape and style of play) but if he's in the way of signing someone like Appiah I would be less than pleased.

Anyone know what we'll get for Marshall - I'd guess there'd be a really big bonus payment if Norwich are promoted.

    Kittoch from the last post.

Camera then? The one just over the hump of the bridge, as you go out of the town towards Newcastle?

The course was ritual humiliation. Sanctimonious instructors asking glaringly obvious questions about driving safety and expecting you to contribute like an overgrown schoolboy. And you didn't get a pass certificate if you didn't show the right spirit and level of enthusiasm. So in theory you could still get your fine and points deduction.

They took you out for a test drive. Could I keep the car below 30?

I had six points already at the time, so it was a no brainer for me. It was OK actually, I find it quite amusing looking back. Mine was in Preston, having got done on the road into Blackpool.

Why is Saviola a free agent? How much money is (was) he on, I take it it's something ridiculous like £100,000 because just look at his goals tally (according to wikipedia):

Team | Games | Goals | Goals per game

    River plate | 86 | 44 | 0.51
    Barcelona | 157 | 68 | 0.43
    AS Monaco | 29 | 7 | 0.24
    Sevilla | 30 | 9 | 0.3
    Argentina | 36 | 11 | 0.35

    TOTAL | 340 | 139 | 0.41

I think it's safe to say at Celtic he would be scoring about a goal every two games.

Can't see it happening as we'll no doubt be behind a long list of top English, Spanish and Italian clubs... damn Scotland!

Strange though that he's not at a club already. Would be a definite WOW signing.

All of MoN's big money signings were successful and repaid the outlay-especially CRSutton who represented a risk given his'career'at Chelsea.

TG cost the club a lot interms of his wages-'the highest paid player in Scotland, and sometimes he wasn't even on the same postcode, never mind the bench.

2 years ago at this time of year P67 posted an article on the importance of not having big earning players not contributing on the pitch and ruining their amortisation with their mojo. This year will see the same thing if we take low earners off the payroll[DM,CB]and the big Budget Bhoys remain unbudged.

I don't think Saviola will come to Parkhead anytime soon, unfortunately,as he would have been an excellent foil for JVH.

DHealy is still at LUFC and they are desperate for any cash at all.

I said last pre season that the club was at a tipping point with a need to invest big to progress and i was pleasantly surprised.

Whilst it was a apparent that signings such as miller would not work out. i feel that hardly any celtic fan would argue against the signings of Gravsen and Jarosik at the time.

Sadly they have not worked out and if we could perhaps shift Gravesen, Jarosik, Miller, zurawski, pressley and hartley we would remove the deadwood and really develop team 3.

Again we are at another tipping point as we realy could leave the huns behind.

    I feel we need to:
buy a good back up keeper
    get Left back cover
obtain a first team right back
Keep balde our best centre half
Punt Hartley and get in cover for brown and Donatie
Have four strikers from JVOH, New first choice partner, McDonald and Killen.

That would curb the joy of the laptop loyal as we approach their unholy buckfast soaked holiday. (sorry too many organge marches around me)

The above could be achieved with an additional spend of around £7 million not outwith our means I would hope.

Hopefully the rest of the "malcontents" as the happy clappy brigade call us will join me back here now the football is starting.

Heres a rumour for you all then petrov back at the club before the start of the season for £2million

You state that,"whilst it was apparent the signings such as Miller, would not work out.
I feel that hardly any Celtic fan would argue against the signings of Graveson and Jarosik at the time".
Is this before or after the event, there is nobody on earth can state that such and such a player will play great for the team,"ie Celtic",Miller could have been an outstanding signing for Celtic,Graveson,Jarosik and any other you care to name could have been a good signing on the day,but for some reason they all had a very bad season at Celtic Park.
    Gweedore.
I know you are not anti Gordon Strachan, but there are those on here that will be glad to see the back of him,I for one hopes he stays as long as Celtic are winning, playing jazzy football or the ugly way we played for long spells last season

I was there at the time of big Jock.
There was no £100.000 signings, no £50.000 signings,If my memory serves me Joe McBride cost £17.000 and was the biggest signing for Celtic.
But,(the big but)I was indulging in the sauce in those days, and my mind may have been a little addled at the time.

    ELD,

You just stole me thunder. I was going to say exactly that, although oldtim67 is dead right about the great Joe McBride. I think Jock Stein managed to get his price down from £20,000. Best piece of transfer business ever, in my opinion.

I think Tom Callaghan also cost something like £30,000 as did Harry Hood and Dixie Deans, everyone a winner.

What I've been told could be utter bunkum but I trust the person who told me. I think Gordon has already said that a manager's tenure shouldn't be more than 3 years and I suspect from a lifestyle point of view he sees the South coast of England as his, and his wife's, eventual home.

When he chooses to leave I doubt that it will be in response to an approach from an EPL club - though that may come later.

I didn't say that i wanted him replaced.I am pointing out that his big signings have flopped. We could have been in a much stronger position for this season ,if they had worked.
Two season's of getting a good level "bang for our buck" for our players, would have left the Darnel in a position that they would have taken years to recover from.
This season will be very tight.

Mr Strachan has earned the right to continue.
If he goes we must look to improve on what he has done.

I believe that Sam Allardyce would have done that.
    Alan Curbishley,
    David Moyes.

We won't be short of candidates when he goes.

At one time i would have had MON back. However he has had his time,i fear.

Four days after our cup final win, you posted your thoughts on the game.

Those thoughts contained of just 9 words of praise for our victory and 245 words of complaint against the team and club.

Now I know that last season did not always contain the scintillating football we all craved, but the pluses outnumbered the negatives over the piece.

I really hope you are proved wrong this season, because if not, I shudder to think how it will affect you.

I dread to think what you would say if we played Tommy Burns football and lost the league.

That would be the real test of your theory. would it not?

I am with Ragnar and Shug on this one as you might well have guessed but maybe, just maybe the MINESHAFTERS will wait until the season has started before lambasting the manager, the players and the club.

By the way, I look forward to meeting up again at Aberdour on the 20th July.

Loved the quality of the debate today bhoys. Mind you I thought it was only David Brent that said FACT :-)

It will be interesting to see how the TG story pans out. Today I have read haedlines associated with his name that have branded him; "dud" "outcast" "misfiring" "inept" "difficult" "a waste" "under performing" etc. Now I am not claiming to know for sure that he can still be a great player for Celtic but ask any Evertonian their opinion of TG and it´s normally glowing.

I reckon that he´s the type of character who is not solely money driven and in fact is a consumate professional.

He has definitely had a set back in his career and he will I reckon take that very seriously. The quite scandalous inerpretation of his time at Celtic so far will stick in his craw. He would not be the first professional player to be motivated to stick the words of a few people down their throats especially in the press. Lets hope that he gets his career on track for his sake because I always was excited while watching him play for Everton. I also hope that we´re not the one´s eating his words. It would be another few threads worth of material if TG was to go to the EPL and be a revelation.

I´d keep him until xmas unless somebody comes in with a non loss making offer. That way we´ll get him for the CL games and their will be a fair share of interest from relegation threatened EPL teams.

I know this suggestion will now be laughed at but if he had played exceptionally well won the awards instead of Nakamura and had the smae trust shown in him by WGS, not that WGS hasn´t given him a fair chance. He´d be under consideration as this seasons captain. TRIPE :-)

I see Fauxbert laid into the Gers in today´s Daily Mail :-)

1 - he deserves a second season to prove himself
2 - will strachan give him that chance?

my opinion is that he does deserve a chance but i think strachan dislikes him and being as stubborn as he is he won't get one. the article also says he had a poor relationship with lennon, not the first time that has been suggested.

From 2005 onwards, it's been upwards all the way for GS. Fact, surely?
    Celtic points totals
    2005 - 92 points
    2006 - 91 points

Good questions. Here's what I trhink.

Everybody deserves a second chance. Even Bobo. Who is now on his sixth. Or seventh.

Will Gordon Strachan give Thomas Gravesen another chance?

Well, first of all, I'd like to say that Gordon is too professional to allow personal feelings to intervene in his team decsions. But I won't because I'm not that naive.

What is the state of the personal relationship between the two? I have no idea, but Gordon's the boss. If Thomas has a problem with it, he knows what he needs to do. This is not Ibrox.

Do I think that Thomas will get a chance if he shines in training? Absolutely. Will he have to shine a bit brighter because he's fallen behind in the pecking order? Absolutely. Would I like him to be the player most thought he could be? Absolutely.

We'll know soon enough if he's just riding the system so that he can keep raking in the cash. If his words about proving his worth are true, then he will know in himself when it's time to go.

Just for interest, what are the facts that substantiate Gordon Strachan's stubbornness?

    Hello Martin, how are you?

My perspective on significant is green and white. So "fact" stands for me.

Number of points is relative. So are goals scored and goals conceded. Championships won, all else being equal which it hasn't been, is absolute.

The comfort margin is, I admit, subjective. I was comfortable last August, assured by November. The points margin was irrelevant. That's my fact.

If Hibs were to sign Naismith ahead of Rfc the repercussions down Govan way would be off the scale.

We have grown so used to the "natural" order of football here and its power structure being Celtic and Rangers by and large swapping first and second places that the prospect of RFC being outbid by a Scottish team seemed , until now, unthinkable.

I can't recall , even in our darkest days, that ever happening to us.

I think we are now at a point where RFC's financial weakness is prejudicing their ability to compete with other Scottish teams.

If that is the case and their position as financial also rans continues to be regularly repeated in results there will be a revolt against Murray of such proportions as will make his position untenable and hasten his departure.

If that happens and they thereby kill their golden goose what happens next?

One of their own directors has , in the past ,acknowledged their position as a primarily west of Scotland club.

Such limitations on their market and customer base strangle their ability to derive a "warchest" from their own trading and with their merchandising crown jewel already sold the prospect of a number of wilderness years ( a Generation of Abomination) beckons , saveable only by a big buy out (not happened yet despite the rumours of them being effectively for sale having done the rounds for many months) or a very substantial share issue to their fanbase.

Just been reading through the earlier posts and read the comments about Jock Stein's signings.

In my opinion his first two, Joe McBride and Willie Wallace, were his best.

Joe McBride was a brilliant centre forward, 86 goals in 94 appearances, and it was a great pity that his Celtic career was cut short by that injury in late 1966.

Pound for pound Willie Wallace was probably the best of Jock's purchases. His 135 goals in 234 appearances was a great return given that Wispy wasn't an out and out centre forward.

I remember him playing at right half on occasions.

I don't know anyone who would dispute the quality of Joe and Willie.

    However, I thin
