    McGovern

    Bjarnsson
    Balde
    McManus
    Naylor

    Jarosek
    Brown
    Sno
    Riordan

    JVoH

Tobi :- From last thread, very true, a lot of change is for the good, I doubt if anyone would be willing to put up with some of the conditions that existed at old grounds.

HamptonTim :- I agree, the sectarian signing policy was wrong and a disgrace both in practical (we lost out on a lot of good players that would never be considered) and in moral terms.

Formation as I suspected, Bjarnsson at RB, showing again the lack of cover we have there. A bit unfair to play him out of position after he played so well in the last game.

McManus, not surprisingly, has the armband.

14 mins. Sedate game so far, Scott Brown got a meaty challenge in, which he might have been booked for in a competitive game. Young Boys had a good chance to take the lead a couple of minutes ago, the striker got behind McGovern but was crowded out.

    Give Bobo some credit.

Pretty even game so far. Some nice passing and movement shown. Ref doesn't seem to like a tackle, which is breaking play up a bit.

Celtic are playing in front of their own penalty box. The midfield is not getting the ball forward, which means Vennegoor and McDonald are spectators.

    Young Boys look much fitter.

Sounds similar characteristics to a Celtic Legend and Captain!

The need for pace in the modern game is overstated.

Hope it improves in the second half.
I do'nt know what the defence are doing with all the passing back to the young keeper, their causing as much problems a the swiss forwards.

We should not read too much into early pre-season performances.

I said the same last year when we were losing and not creating and it still holds true when we've we're undefeated so far.

No shape can be established yet as we're trying to give a lot of players some time on the pitch. It will be easier to tell how we're shaping up 6 or so games into pre-season.

Having said that, the encouraging thing is the players seem fit and no-one's got injured yet. We're starting our pre-season earlier than our Scottish rivals and, in my opinion, that helped us steal a march on them last year and establish a good lead.

Off to watch the second half and, hopefully a win.

GM - We all know what Boruc can do and these early games are more about finding out what some of the fringe players can do and getting sometime on the field for the new players.

Boruc has played for 2 years none stop and there is no benefit in putting him on the park yet.

I have no doubts he will be on the field as we get closer to the start of the season.

The players looked fairly shattered towards the end there with all the fitness work they've been doing. Bjarnasson's never a right back but looks an exciting prospect in midfield and I think we'll be seeing a lot more of him this season. Tommy G will have to improve massively in the coming friendlies to even merit a place on the bench when the real stuff starts.

  • At 07/07/07 20:29, Tom the Tim said…

A good work out for the team and some understandably tired boys at the end, particularly Naylor, who has played 180 minutes in two days.

The score means absolutely nothing to anyone other than tabloids and mineshafters.

Teddy is going to be a star and Kennedy is class.

Sno will dominate our midfield in a season or two. The boy has a football brain way beyond his years.

We're doing all right for the first week of pre season.

By the time the crucial Cl qualifier comes around, we will be up to full speed.

  • At 07/07/07 20:29, Weeron said…

Always disappointing to lose a game. Any game. However, I think that fitness was a huge issue. We were just jogging along but never getting near the opposition.

The last 2 late goals kind of hurt, though......

Positives? Donati is figuring out who the footballers at Celtic. He was looking for Aiden and Bjarneson most of the time.

Bjarneson, while not a full back, is cleary a footballer of a decent standard. I'm thinking that he is in the process of overtaking Sno in the big scheme of things.

Donati, I think, played too deep, but that was because he was getting no help from TG.

Overall, people got games, including fringe guys like Bjarneson and Virgo. Kennedy got some playing time, though he really didn't play well.

The tabloids can get their broken crests ready. We can get on with building our fitness. And buying a full back I hope....

Tommy G can go. Sorry but I, personally, have had enough. This was a no pressure game - to which he brought pressure. Time's up.

WGS is certainly giving Bjarny a lot of airtime - and it is well deserved. A star in the making I hope.

I like Donati. I love Scott Brown.

No player on the post for the first goal.( basic defensive tactics missing)

Good finish by JJ for our's.

Kennedy and Virgo sleeping for the second.( lack of concentration and basic defensive positioning)

Slack backpass for the third by Naylor (I think). This could be down to fitness.

Cut wide open without a challenge for the fourth.(this could be lack of fitness)

Let's hope it comes down to lack of fitness and

    Aiden frustrates me so much.

After a brilliant (world class)piece of skill, he fails to pick out a player, when it mattered.

Very little chances created for out forwards.

Still who cares, when we get beat it only a pre season friendly, and when we win it is excellent progress towards or CL qualifier.

Ah well, it's been a wee while since we've seen a broken crest.

Just as I wasn't doing summersaults after our victory on Thursday, I'm not queing outside the mineshaft tonight.

I thought Donati stood out in the second half.

For me we need to sign a first choice right back and some cover for Naylor.

I agree with Hail Hail's comments re. young Bjarnsson being hung out to dry, but to his credit he did very well. On his performances so far, the young lad looks good.

With the proceeds from the sale of Marshall, Bettie, Balde, Graveson, Miller and Zurawski I'm still hoping for a WOW penalty box striker.

i never said teddy didn.t play well

he was one of the better ones, strachan

hung him out to dry at right back and he was

tired and culpable for the late goals. strachan's fault

not bjarnnason who has a future at celtic unlike his manager

hail hail, so if you were also encouraged by what you say of Teddy, perhaps the comment should have read:

'(Gordon) Strachan gives Bjarnsson platform to shine"?

Which we all seem to agree he did.

I thought Bjarnsson's attitude and committment was spot on.

The team in the first half looked better. In the second half, we did not compete. Gravason was particularly poor, in my view. Would someone please phone him a Taxi.

On the positive side, I really liked what I saw of Donati, Bjarnsson and Brown. Throw Naka into the mix and we have some great options.

I hope we keep Jarosic. I still feel we have not seen the best of him yet.

    Lubo.

Young Bjarnsson hasn't even established himself in the first team sqaud, yet he finds himseld played out of position at right back by a mangager who has has numerous transfer windows to address our deficiencies in defence.

Let's be diplomatic and say the young lad was given a tough shift.

completely disagree about strachans choice of 'platform to shine'

teddy is a fine young player who played well going forward, but who is clearly never a right back just like
caldwell is not a right back, but he too (gets a platform
too shine there sometimes - ha ha)

we need a right back and i think to play a midfield player there, is partially reflected in the result which was 1-4

I can't honestly remember who the supporting players were.

However, i do concur that despite having more (so called first class) midfielders and strikers on our book's, than i can ever remember.

They did not provide him with an abundance of option's.

That being said.Lets see how effective he is this season.

He was our best player by a mile in the early part of the season and faded badly in the latter.Which is not unexpected for a youngster.

The main thing most people can agree on is we need full backs

Naylor and wilson are quality players but we need options

Some positives this early on so once we get the dead wood shifted and 2 or 3 new players in we could have the team 3 that could really leave the huns behind.

Why have we not addressed the lack of cover for the fullback position's.

It will be a crime if this isn't addressed during this transfer window.

i also think that both games have shown that the squad badly needs trimmed, and the fact that you can make 8 changes in first team players isn't a good sign.

the squad is too big and bloated, and will enevitably lead to disharmony, apart from distracting from the
    best 11.

the players who need to go have again removed all doubt, with their displays in both games.

I was hoping that Gravesen would stay this season, with Jarosik moving on, and maybe prove that he is capable of playing- however after the 2 games it could be better if he moved on and Jarosik stayed. Jarosik seemed to show much more desire to succeed. All in all, I wouldn't worry at all about tonights result. YBOB looked fitter and this 'competition' obviously meant a lot to them whereas Celtic didn't even realise that this was a competition.

hail hail, Teddy either shone or he didn't. I though we both thought he did (and several others seem to agree).

If he shone, then he clearly had a platform to do so from.

If a young player shines like this when being hung out to dry, we have remarkably talented manager.

So in summary we need a couple of full backs and a top class forward.

As the window drags on our options in these departmants are diminishing. Bellamy,Mackaay,Rigters etc.... The squad problems are there for all to see and it will be a disgrace if they are not addressed given the financial success of the club this year.

If we dont then all the hysteria about cantering the league this year may leave us with salmonella poisoning from all the egg on our faces.

Much as we all love to watch Celtic, I honestly wonder about the wisdom of televising games like this.
In the old days, pre-season amounted to a few games - far away and out of sight - culminating in a couple of 'glamour friendlies' at Celtic Park just before the season kicked off proper.

There seems to be far too much scrutiny placed on these meaningless pre-season games. They neither make us nor break us - their only function is to get players match fit and try the odd experiment.

    Let's chill out a bit.

Michael Collins... Disgrace? Wow. I remember that word being used in relation to us signing Lee Naylor.

Nothing disgraceful about Celtic, in my view. A well run club in an unfair and imperfect world. For the management to fix everything that needs fixed, some players need to be sold. Ask anyone in the business, and they'll tell you that, very often, selling is tougher than buying.

Lots of posturing will be done by players and agents before we can sell those that we need to sell.

Give Celtic some time (and some credit)....

Glad I didn´t make the trip. I agree about the comments about full backs, We need cover for both Wilson and Naylor. I fully expect to see a class act come in at fullback hence why we haven´t seem perturnbed abiout losing Doumbe.

What is is it with Celtic and full backs? Jock Stein was not averse to playing wingers in the full back positions and Billy Mc Neil carried the torch a little longer.

I hope it´s just paper talk and WGS knows he has a few aces up his sleeves but when he is quoted as saying "I am happy with my squad" If I see any centre back playing full back in a back four this season for any important game then it will be a glaring deficiency and not just to us.

Agathe used to have to step back so much he eventually found a berth there but he wasn´t a full back either. It is necessary for players to sometimes fill in during games due to red cards .. last minute tactics etc. I am sure the young icelandic player is happy with getting a few minutes in the first team.

    This game is meaningless.

A couple of fullbacks please Mr Lawlell and then you can come round for dinner.

    Hail Hail

even more curiously we don't agree.

on teddy he shone when he strayed into his natural midfield position, as a defending right back he was cruelly exposed, which was the fault of his manager.

remember ross wallace the last young player to be

given a game at full back or was that a 'platform to

    shine?????????'

    Hail Hail

You are looking for an excuse to have a dig at our manager at the Bjarnasson at right back is an easy one for you.

Perhaps it is more relevant that Strachan chose to play him for 90 minutes in an unnatural position.

This could be for numerous reasons - to see how he coped mentally or even just to give him another 90 minutes in the first team.

For a start I'm not going to tear lumps out of any player on the park'
I feel sorry for the couple of thousand who paid good money to travel over to switzerland, and watch this type of friendly game, what could anyone make out of the play of the Celtic players,I saw some good play by individual players, but half of them was in the first half, and half of them was in the second half and I did'nt see enough good players in both halfs to make up a team.
I;m maybe one of the old fashioned supporters who were under the impression that Celtic did'nt play friendlies, always fought for the ball and never gave an inch to the opposition.
The older punters on here will remember back 20-30 years ago travelling over the border, taking thousands of supporters to watch so called friendlies, beating the likes of Newcastle 5-0 and enjoying every minute of the game.
Maybe the games changing as far as friendlies go,but I do'nt like it.
I was seriously thinking of going to the states to watch the two games over there, but found that I would have to travel a thousand miles between games, and your talking serious money to show your support.
I decided against going to the US,and thought about switzerland, thank god I decided to renage(sp) on that trip.
I know they're only friendlies but what about the Bhoys & the ghirls who went out to support the team, does'nt the Celtic players realise that if it were'nt for these same supporters there would'nt be a Celtic team, their needing to show the travelling support a bit of respect.
I'm not a mineshafter, I love my team but it hurts when there was no fight in the team over there, they're taking the word friendly too literally.
I must say it again the Celtic players are needing to show some respect to the punters who spend their hard earned cash to go and watch a friendly.
they should try winning it could be catching, and try sending the supporters home happy, instead of driving them to drink.
enough said,no criticism of the players footballing abilities, just the attitude they're showing to the supporters.
dave, who lives in hope of seeing a decent friendly some day.

    A game of two halves.

The first half confirmed the impression from the first game that Celtic are looking sharper and fitter than this time last year. Also, although not quite as much as last game, Celtic were moving the ball forward more than has been the style of last season. The other plus point was that YBOB were not treating it as a friendly and as a result it was a good workout.

    Now to the second half!

8 changes and a completely different performance. Not enough cohesive passing moves, higher incidence of giving the ball away and ever decreasing effectiveness.

Although positive about what I've seen, my main worry over the two matches has been the lack of goal scoring opportunities created, which was our big problem last season.

    Those that impressed:

BJARNSSON Played out of position for most of the game, given the runaround several times but yet I made him MOM for his composure, his ball control, his ability to move forward quickly, etc. I like him!

McMANUS Started as captain and I hope he retains that honour for the whole season. Only played the first 45 mins but was composed and committed.

BROWN He's going to pick up a lot of bookings but so would Bertie Auld in to-days game. Like his attitude and impresssed by his skills.

BOBO A marked improvement on the first game and was the second best central defender of the game.

McGEADY Started very brightly and I feel that the signs are encouraging for the season. He will benefit by the more attacking style of play.

    Those that disappointed:

KENNEDY He'll need to turn in a higher level of performance if he hopes to become on of our central defenders.

JVOH Apart from setting up the goal by falling over the defender, he did little else.

JAROSIK He put more effort into this game than any other I've seen him play and he had quite a lot of the ball but how many times did he make an effective pass? Very little.

VIRGO Although played in his real position he just does not have the quality (or is it confidence?) to be a Celtic player.

The real comment must be reserved for GRAVESEN. He almost convinced me by his earlier statements that he was determined to stay and fight for his place but to-days performance just proved that he is probably the most expensive flop I've seen wear The Hoops! The number of times he gave the ball away was just amazing.

The result was disappointing but the teams energy just drained away and the overall benefits will outweigh the negatives.
