Any excuse to spread the pain to Celtic

I was scouring for information on Rangers accounts last night following their highly abbreviated financial announcement last month; nothing on Companies House yet, nothing on the Ofex feed, so I turned to the club web site to see the arresting headline “Beasley silences Zeta Racists”.

Well done DeMarcus. Unfortunately there seems to be a pattern of racist abuse in the Balkans, which Uefa must do more to stop, however, I do not recall this subject receiving such coverage by a football club. Rangers should be commended.

I anticipate headlines along the lines of ‘Celtic fans in Mountains of Mourne song scandal’ after our visit to Falkirk on Saturday, a game which will be recorded by many up and down the land.

Any excuse to spread the pain will be used.

When you tslk of a budget(UEFA CL or whatever)are you referring to a P&L budget which would take into account the amortised player costs or are you speaking of a player dealings (capital budget)?

I don't know what the club actually do but I would have thought that in terms of long term planning the player dealings would be treated as some sort of capital item its main impact being on cash flow and borrowings and its cost this financial year being reflected through an amortised amount shown in the P&L account.

Is my undestanding correct since I am strugling to understand gweedorebhoy? and mad mitch's concerns re a UEFA budget as that to me seems eminently sensible and I suspect has more to do with taking a cautous view of P&L projection. The acquisition of one or two significant players amortised over their contract period would be ulikely imo to dent that P & L projection too severely whilst CL entry wouldoffer a substantial boost to profitability.

Pretty much the nail on the head there paul. While what occured at Zeta was totally objectionable, there are various motives at work.

Did anyone notice how silent and un-animated the Rangers fans looked? No songs left to sing?

Hopefully saturdays game will see a boisterous Celtic support without dodgy add-ons to good songs.

It's about desire and ambition. The symantics of a uefa cup or CL budget have relevance but to the average fan who cares.

Ultimatley for me it's about does this club want to bring in players good enough to take us to the next level before we get hooked out the CL.

At the moment the answer seems to be no.

Brown never played Cl in his life great prospect and will be a fab player.

Donati don't know how many Cl games he has played but another good one.

Mcdonald and Killen just SPl guys good honest pros who will score goals for us. Not CL calibre

    We all know the problems.

    No Fullback cover

    No real quality CH

No striker who can score goals at the top level.

Desire to get them in and the ambition to suceed in the CL is what i want from a budget.

Just my view. You have yours but are you happy with the planning before this CL game?

My take on the chanting is that like it or not we get lumped in with Rangers. Look at the sponsorship, the media name for us (Old Firm) etc. I know we are two distinct entities but I'm just saying the wider audience thinks of us together.

We also run the risk of getting lumped in with them with this sectarian stuff. When they are under scrutiny, the media and I'm sure Rangers as well will make sure that 'what about Celtic' will be brought up.

We should seek to disassociate ourselves from Rangers whether that be sponsorship, the media or even amongst fans.

We also need to be squeaky clean as the rags and football hierachy are waiting for the first slip.

I do have a certain sympathy for some of this targetting of Rangers by UEFA as I think the fact their chants are in English make them easier for most Europeans to pick up. The Balkan countries with their racist chants and noises don't seem to be the focus of attention. Similarly the fines against Spanish clubs for high-profile racist chants and noises were laughable.

    Meant to add

If Craig Gordon does indeed sign for Sunderland for £9million

then how much is Artur Boruc really worth?

Both have excellent experience in domestic and International football.

BUT, Gordon has hardly played at all in Eurpoe, compared to the Holy Goalie, who has been immense in the CL. Even Excluding CL games, I still rate Boruc higher than Gordon.

I put Artur in the £15million category

It was interesting how the headline was read on 5Live this morning

    Not verbatim

Rangers game to be reported for racist chanting, as they go through their qualifier against Zeta.

My first reaction was, they've done it this time, only to find out that it was the Zeta fans

Last Saturday's 'sectarian chanting', was the first time I have noticed anything like that being reported down here, it has made big news.

I hope our supporters take the opportunity to split the 'Old Firm' once and for all. There always seems to be a tendency for an argument about whether something is sectarian or not, lets forget about that. Is it appropriate or not, should now be the question.

Is this a filler Thread Paul? Just something to keep everyone active before some big news?

    Just a thought

    Paul,

As a reasonably intelligent and apprently well informed Celtic supporter, do you ever ask yourself, " why am I scouring around for information on Rangers accounts."

Or why do I feel the need to pander to those who would call us paranoid, by going for cheap everybody is against us shots?

Why as Celtic supporters should we give two monkeys about any or all of the following...

    what they sing
how skint or otherwise they are
what their fans do in pubs
whether their chairman has the press in his pocket or not.

It's a rhetorical question of sorts as I'm sure I know the answer. It's that we are desperate for the cheap thrill of having something over them. Something to gloat and point about.

I've said it before and remain to be convinced otherwise, it belittles us as a support to be so obsessed with them.

Are we not meant to be better than that?

The only thing I want to have over them is more points in the league and more progress in any cup tournament.Other than that, and except when they are on the same pitch they should be an irrelevance.

If I've missed some humourous irony in the posting then I apologise, but if so please explain it to me.

    I'm a bit fick sometimes.

    Cheers

Personally speaking, I would rather we didn't buy anyone else until we sort out what we are going to do with the guys that GS has already bought (or inherited) but now doesn't fancy. Namely, Adam Virgo, Gary Caldwell, Stephen Pressley, Bobo Balde, Evander Sno, Tommy Gravesen, Jiri Jarosik, Kenny Miller and Derek Riordan. That’s a lot of money in wages tied up on a lot of players that for one reason or another, are no longer being considered for a first team place. Until he sorts out this mess, I'd rather we didn't buy anyone else. At some point, we will have to balance the books in order to avoid being seriously handicapped by debt, why not start now.

Celtic have warned fans not to "indulge nor encourage" any chants which could result in sanctions from the SPL.
In a letter sent to away fans with tickets for Saturday's match in Falkirk, the club have warned of the implications of sectarian singing.
Rangers fans were reported to have been singing offensive songs during Saturday's league match in Inverness.
Under new SPL rules, points could be deducted if supporters are found to be participating in sectarian chanting.
The letter reads: "We should not underestimate how serious this could be.
Your support has earned the club worldwide recognition for its good nature and the passion with which you get behind the team, let's ensure that this is maintained this season.
"We are a non-political and non-sectarian organisation and we ask in the strongest possible terms that you do not indulge nor encourage songs or chants or any other form of behaviour which could in any way bring the club into disrepute."
The club have also warned they will take season-ticket passes away from any supporter who is identified as an offender, and issue indefinite bans from future matches

    Awe Naw,

I can just picture those security guys...

    Paul,

The SFA's intent to remove bigotry / sectarianism / racism and any other problems by deducting points for singing does potentially open a whole new can of worms.

How would the SFA deal with the situation of team A leading the league by a point or two.

Fans from team B go to watch team A dressed in team A colours in order to generate a bit of an atmosphere and get a few points deducted from team A.

SFA react by deducting points from team A thereby allowing team B to win the league.

Given the sums of money involved, particularly with CL qualification the SFA may have scored an own goal. Who knows, maybe the video replays are really to check out the singing?

Reminds me of the time I almost got arrested in London for "talking in a funny voice..."

As my old boy used to say to me. The more you step in dogs doodles the further it spreads. We are in bed together with the Old-firm. Haven´t you seen the advert where we are heroically copmared with Starlings .. they should have used lemmings I suppose.

Itz..From your list surely Sno and Caldwell are still in his thoughts. They have been there or thereabouts when fit. Also Sno is only a youngster with potential and would not have thought he was on high wages. If we were desperate to get shot fo him we would have been more receptive to advances from Sienna. As for the rest, totally agree although how Gravesen and Jarosik can't get a look in ahead of Hartley is beyond me. Even on Sunday we played Brown wide to accomodate Hartley. I am a Strachan fan but some decisions are baffling at times.
On the "flop" signings, was excited when we got Jarosik and Gravesen but for 1 reason or other hasn't worked out and time to move them on to free up funds as Stracham clearly no longer fancies them. Bobo not worth the wage he is (reported to be) on. Pressley was a stop gap and hopefully won't get in the team but we had all these centre halfs last year and needed him when we signed him. Would think (or hope!!) he is number 5 choice at present and would ship him out if we could. Miller was a punt on a Bosman that hasn't worked out, although it was arguably worth it just for the Benfica game. Should be able to recoup his wages on a transfer fee out, if we can get £1.75 for Bambi no reason why we can't get same or more for Miller.

sorry if this has been posted before

Gordon, you won another double for Celtic and had a good run in the Champion's League. How would you describe your season?

    • Gordon Strachan: Well, I've still got my job, so that's good. 60,000 people seem to be happy every week and as you said a double and the first time we've gotten into the last 16 in Europe and we had to play AC Milan who'd eventually become the holders. So it was good, but we want to improve. There's a lot of aspects our play that we'd like to improve and if we can do that then we'll be a goods side.

Towards the end of the season, when you had the championship all locked up, there was some little bit of criticism. How do you react to that?
Depends who's giving it. If it's people whose opinions I don't respect or if it's some drunk in the street shouting or if it's someone on a phone-in. Where some idiot who you think is intelligent phones in and just doesn't have any friends and shouts down the phone and that becomes an opinion. If it's anything like that then it doesn't count. If it's Kenny Dalglish or something like that or anybody with football knowledge then I will take notice of it, but criticism has not come from anybody with reasonable intelligence yet, so I'll be okay.

Walter Smith knows a bit about football and he's done a good job with Rangers since coming onboard. What do you make of that?
Nothing. I don't make anything of anything to do with Rangers. No more. It's not my area. My area is Celtic. If you want to speak to Celtic, I'm here all day. If you want to speak to Rangers, I've got Walter Smith's phone number right here; you give him a call.

Looking back on your season and the Champion's League. There are times that Celtic played very, very well in the Champion's League, other times they've been down a little bit. Is there any particular reason for this kind of inconsistency?
What would you mean down? Do you feel upset? Or depressed?

Some of the games on the road they haven't looked...
Oh, I see, down right. Not at their best. Yeah, that's a learning process for our young players, as a young team. It's a completely different team from two years ago. And even that team that Martin [O'Neill] had, you would look at it as the same. It's like two years since they went on the road, as you call it. So it's nothing new. It's not a disease I brought along. It was well and truly ensconced in the camp before I got there. Umm, but well again, we'll try to improve on that. We played some fantastic games last year to beat Benfica and Manchester United. That's not too bad, not too shabby. (I'd just say) we like to improve, but I don't sit up all night worrying about it. I just go along and play and see where we end up.

Last year you ended up going up against Milan, as you said, the team that eventually won it. How much did you get out of this? How much does your team get out of it? And would you think that with the present constraints that maybe that's as far as Celtic can go in the Champion's League?
No, you always think you can get further, but as you said with the constraints. I think you need to explain whether it's a financial state. Where's English clubs, they get between £33million and £50million each. We get £1m, in Scotland. So there's an imbalance there, which we can understand, because the English league is the most exciting in the world. We have to deal with that.

People buying players for £20m and £25m in England and in Italy. Where we, our maximum is £4m. And that's quite good going for us. But we think we can, it's a young side we've got, but we think we can mold them together and take on the best sides in Europe. But, my priority is to win the Scottish league. That's always the priority and we've done that the last two years since I've been there and we'll continue to do that and if we can win anything else, that's a real good bonus.

Do you think that there's any way that they should be able to go about addressing this imbalance of all the money that some teams and some countries get and the lack of money that...
No, no, no. Not at all. It's like the best actors who get the best money. The best sportsmen should get the best money. The best leagues should get the best money. And you have to deal with that.

There's been a lot of talk, many people suggesting perhaps that if you we're in England, in the Premiership, that the side would be completely different. How great do you think Celtic could be, given the kind of money that they get in the Premiership?
With that kind of money, we could win it with the players we'd be able to bring in. With the support we've got, not only the 60,000 that turn up at every game, but the away support that we've got and the revenue we could create, which we do already. We could be one of the teams that could win that. After a few years, obviously, but I think it's a long way off.

Would you personally like to see Celtic in the Premiership?
Yes. Yes, definitely. As long as it didn't affect the rest the league that you left behind. You'd have to make sure that you're stabilized and financially secured that that league could go on and flourish as well and I'm sure that might help them as well.

You have brought in a number of new players. What players are you expecting a lot from this year? Can you tell us something about some of the players you brought in?
Scott Brown from Hibs, he's 21. He's an all action midfield player. High hopes for him. Scott McDonald, Scott is 23. He's a young guy. He's a young striker from Motherwell. Again, all action. Brave for his size. Gets goals. Who else have we got?

You brought in an Italian player.
Ah, Massimo Donati. Right, I knew there was an Italian player in there. Yeah, he's a bit older. He's 26, but he's been about for a while. I like what he's got. He's powerful, he's composed on the ball, and he's hungry, so that's good. And Chris Killen who we got on a Bosman, which means a free transfer. He's come along and we felt we lacked presence last year when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was injured. He'll help us if Jan gets injured, but also if we feel like we want to play two strong guys up front, he would help us there as well.

Could you tell us a little more about McDonald, because he's got a big following in Australia, where we have a huge audience. There's a lot of people who have been writing about him.
Ah good. As I said to you, he is brave, he left Southampton, and he went away and he played at different clubs and he found a home at Motherwell. I think he realized then, he grew up and he realized that football was a very serious game. Since I've been in Scotland, he's been one of the best forward players in Scotland. As I said, sometimes kids can leave a club early in their career, like he did at Southampton, and just fade away, or you either take the challenge on and become better and I think he's took the challenge on and become better and he's gotten just rewards for two fantastic years at Motherwell.

One man who has certainly not faded away is Nakamura. Is there a possibility that he might become too expensive for Celtic to hold onto?
No. Well, you always hear managers say we won't sell anybody and then suddenly they sell them for a ridiculous amount of money that same week. That doesn't happen often, but nobody's not for sale at all. Even Ronaldinho, I think if you offered enough money you would get him. So we can't say that, but I don't think Naka will be going anywhere. He loves the place and he's a hero there. He's got a home. When he was in Reggina, not too many people knew about Nakamura, but then joined Celtic and the whole world knows about Nakamura. It's a good home. It's a good place for him to play, because we do like to attack all the time and his assets are attacking. Although I must say, he does work very hard as well.

How do you rate him as a player on the overall scale?
Overall scale is& I've been in football 35 years and he's the best touch I've ever seen in 35 years of playing football.

What's your goals for this year?
What are my goals for this year? To improve. To improve, myself. To improve and I've got to make individuals better, because that's my job. My job is to help people get better. If we can do that with the team, that's fantastic as well. So basically just to improve.

yet again he insults the intelligence of some fans, i find it offensive and while it does not make me hate him or anything it makes me understand why so many still would have him out in a minue. thats not how to endear yourself to people, its outright offensive to blanket so many people as not having reasonable intelligence about football

A new website giving football fans the chance to report sectarian incidents at matches went online today.

The Kick-Out Bigotry website was launched by sports minister Stewart Maxwell.

It includes a 'sectarian incident notification form', which allows supporters to report 'bigoted' behaviour at any level of football.

The campaign has been developed by new Scottish charity Football For All (FFA), which aims to promote positive social messages through football.

It will also feature news and views about sectarianism-related issues throughout the 2007-2008 football season.

Launching the site, Mr Maxwell said: 'It's my pleasure to launch the Kick-Out Bigotry website, which I know will be an invaluable resource for all real football fans.

'Football For All is supported by the SFA, SPL, SFL and sportscotland - as well as by the Scottish government - and it is our shared hope it will build on the good progress made so far in defeating bigotry and promoting harmony on the terraces and in our communities.'

The launch comes as the Scottish Premier League launched a new crackdown on 'unacceptable conduct' by fans.

Rangers are expected to face an SPL investigation over chants heard coming from their support during Saturday's match at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The Glasgow giants have already been sanctioned twice by UEFA as a result of discriminatory chanting from their supporters, during Champions League and UEFA Cup matches against Villarreal and Osasuna respectively.

The Ibrox club could face a fine or have points docked but are more likely to escape with a warning this time.

Roddy McNulty, FFA campaign director, said most fans want to see an end to football-related bigotry.

He added: 'To date, fans from every club have responded positively to the Kick-Out Bigotry campaign - the overwhelming majority of football supporters have had enough of the sectarian hatred associated with Scottish football.

'Football For All calls for united fan, club and authority action this season - a concerted effort is required to confine religious bigotry to Scottish football history.

'If there is a will, there is a way to tackle this problem effectively.'

I was lucky enough to win the dinner with Gordon Strachan prize at last year's CQN Golf Day (no mention of this year's stitch up...). He answered something similar there and I can assure you that it did not come across that Gordon was trying to be offensice or superior in any way. To me, it is his way of dealing with the pressure he is under, i.e. he described individual supporters as absolutely wonderful and great fun but that the collective 'support' was fantasy in that he couldn't directly deal with upwards of 60,000 opinions.

It frustrates me so much that his character is such an issue, he's a winner and we are winning under him - that's all that matters to me. In fact, I used to feel that Martin O'Neill used to adopt a superior attitude in his interviews with the press - far more than Gordon does - yet I never heard a word about it then. Again, it never bothered me because he was a winner and we were winning under him.

Itz...Agree we need to ship a few out, for team morale to avoid people lingering about as much if not more so than for the balance sheet. Would like to see us punt Pressley, Hartley, Gravesen, Jarosik, Miller, Balde, Zurawski and Miller. Would hope to get a few bob in for Jarosik, Gravesen, Miller and Balde. Maybe nominal fees for the others and a free for Pressley. Would probably punt Riordan as well, hasn't had a chance up front when everyone else has but appears to be out of the picture as far as Strachan is concerned and the one who moans through the press. That would leave us with probably too small a squad but if we got 2 defenders out, 2 centre midfielders out and 2 forwards out and replaced with 1 for each position of higher quality who is more likely to feature and enhance the team would be happy..sounds so simple when you put it like that. We are also desperatley short for full backs, would not like to see full back cover, which implies someone who will play when other 2 are injured but someone who will actually get in the team and push the other 2.
We can but hope. Starting to look likely that JJ will be moved on soon which is a start although would still rather he was in the team than Harltey who has offered even less than Jarosik but seems to draw less criticism.

Danny.. Like I said, sounds so simple when you write it down but obviously know we are going to have difficulty moving some of these guys on, not just in next day but this season. What concerns me is guys like Hartley, Pressley and Miller who are not good enough may be here for a good while yet and could even be in the team. If they are just hope they are not in the team on a regualr basis and emergencies or League cup games only. Strange scenario with some of the others, particularly Jarosik. He was arguably our best player in pre-season last year, started off well then got moved about the team, wide left and up front to cover. After that never got a look in again in centre midfield. The thing is Strachan appeared to be big fan last year and always made good comments about him, recall a game at Ibrox where we were pretty rank and Strachan blamed loss of Jarosik up front as reason for decline later in game. Also threw him in at the San siro for biggest game of the season and when fit was usually in the team or on the bench. Now he is totally out of the picture. I assume it is due to him wanting to move on, has made noises about not liking Scottish football, so Strachan wants to use players who are committed but frustrating as although he looks heart lazy he was decent when played in middle of the park and scored some vital goals notably against Hearts. When you consider the number of games Harltey has contributed zilch to from centre of park strange that Jarosik can't get a look in. Even the fact we are apparently looking for 3 million euros for him would indicate we seem to think he is worth more than Hartley. Personally I would like to see us have a central midfield 3 of Brown, Donati and Jarosik (or Gravesen) with Naka in a free role. This would obviously put more onus on our full backs to defend and take us away from 2 wide players that Strachan seems to prefer. However I don't think we get enough from Mcgeady (yet, although I hope he comes good this year and becomes more consistent and produces better end product) and feel Naka is wasted wide right.

Unfortunately you don't really know if they're going to fit into your system/club until after you've signed them. It's only then, after you discover that they don't, is when they become "Dead Wood".

I personally think the GS did really well, when he first came to our club identifying and getting rid of those that he deemed not suitable for his style.
