Celtic manager subject to vitriolic attack

An Aberdeen official, whose principle academic achievement seems to be an HNC in Finger Pointing, launched a bitter vitriolic attack on the Celtic bench during the Aberdeen-Celtic match at Pittodrie today.

The official, who moved from the back of the main stand to overhang the pitch-side wall to participate in proceedings just after Celtic took the lead through a late Kenny Miller goal.

Gordon Strachan, who remonstrated with the club official – not a proscribed offence – was ordered from the trackside by referee Charlie Richmond, though the referee would have seen little of the fracas.

Strachan was subject of a complaint by Falkirk fans last week for over-celebrating a Celtic goal, which is not yet an offence in Scotland. It will be an interesting test of the new regime at the SFA if they back the Pittodrie official or the Celtic manager.

It will certainly be interesting as you say Paul, surely if a manager is then punished for celebrating, substitutes cannot, they will then not be allowed to warm-up in front of fans, and maybe we will have a bull-pen area like in baseball!

    Madness.

Paul, as Charlie Richmond rolls over the fracas, you can see John Underhill point at Strachan, a clear indication that he was going to go. I think Richmond went on what John Underhill told him.

If people in the crowd can report what a manager says to the police, and a player can possibly file an assault charge against another player for certain acts on the field of play, can a manager not complain to the police about a fan?

Ah well Duffield, never mind. You'll have to get on with the original investigation now.

I guess that is why we are Champions.

I reckon that the skill, courage and invention of Naka, Donati and Mc.Geady turned the game in our favour in the second hand, plus KM's input, of course.

These are the type of players that are worth the ticket money alone and inspired Pele to describe football as the Beautiful Game.

Actually it's a brilliant laugh. A fat jobsworth, all pumped on the pomp of being Aberdeen's 'main stand supervisor', rushing down those steps, his indignation growing with every step, to make a total and utter eejit of himself in front of an international TV audience.

He's an embarrassment to his club.

Where's that Willie Miller guy who was posting earlier? It would be interesting to know if he's more embarrassed by all the writhing around on the ground by the Aberdeen players, by having Sandy Clark's coupon on official team photos, or by the fat jobsworth.

I think we should be told.

There is no way that the Jim Leishman lookalike can retain his position.

    His actions are arguably actionable.

He has no authority on the pitch, unlike the match police commander and the match officials.

To encroach on the field of play and verbally attack
Gordon Strachan in the manner that he did, is surely a sacking offence.

No doubt the media will call for his anorak, with club logo, and his ID photo,to be ceremoniously removed.

When you add this debacle re WGS `s sending off to the incident at St Mirren last year the whole situation is farcical.
Must we put up with biased ,troublmaking, interference from club officials as well as the obvious bias of the officialdom?

I was sick fed up of every member of the media yesterday harrassing WGS and gloating at the Darnel victory .IMO they are not even trying to disguise their anti-celtic sentiment.

It now seems appropriate and exceptable for consistent attacks ,driven by the media, to take place against our support and manager with impugnity.
The referee was a joke today and his double standards were redolent.

The SFA and the SPL must come out in support of WGS here ...Duffield where are you ?

I was talking to someone I know who is a Falkirk fan and was at the game last week. The reason they were so annoyed was and I quote "the wee fenian baldy guy with the specs was annoying us by facing us and smiling at us after youse scored" He went on to admit they had been given "that wee ginger to*** what for!"

He went on to make an official complaint re "the wee fenian scum"

That really was a bizarre incident - I'd love to hear the logic behind Gogs getting sent off. Was it for whatever Weird Paper Waving Man (WPWM) was complaining about, or was it for replying to WPWM's accusations? Whatever, WPWM is a weird paper waving tube (WPWT)and I'm glad that WPWT's team got gubbed by Gordon Strachan's Champions!

I think it was a fantastic day today. I thought our passing was superb (though I think I'm in a minority of one for thinking the same thing quite a few times in the first half too..), the goals were class and the support was brilliant. Kenny Miller put the icing on the cake as well - if ever a player deserved a return to form, it's him. I bet a mocking friend that KM would score 20 goals this season, and it aint looking too shabby a bet right at this moment. Please don't sell him - Kenny Must Stay!

Just watching that Tommy Burns interview again - that guy really is dignity personified - you've just got to love him.

For anyone who's not listened to Tommy Burns, he sums up the incident involving Lynn's TPWT as "bad craic". Brilliant.

He said the abuse the Celtic bench has taken in the last few games has been terrible, with the very worst personal insults imagineable. For people then to cry foul when WGS et al give them a wee wave or a bit of banter in return is, indeed, "bad craic".

Do you think that the appointment of Smith is random, or the best man for the job selection.

It may be stretching my paranoia a bit, but I don't think Taylor at UEFA will do them any harm either.

Never, ever underestimate the power of Freemasonry in this country and beyond.

One thing I guarantee that this nonsense will do, is to fire Gordon Strachan with the same zeal that Jock Stein had, through his experiences.

Gordon never shrunk from a challenge on the pitch, no matter how big the opposition was.

The time is now for EVERY Celtic supporter to rally behind our manager and tolerate no more "I just don't like him" nonsense that gets posted here and other sites.

Almost seems like now our magnificent support have proved their value to the club and their ongoing ability to refuse to be drawn into the "sectarian chanting debate", a new angle (i.e the barracking of our management team) has surfaced for the eijits who populate the home support of these anonymous little clubs.

Mr Strachan, I hope this doesn't deter you from walking away from a club where the progress we have all made as a club over the last few years in the face of some stern challenges, mostly off the field, has been outstanding.

Great result and good TV for a first for Spanish TV.

I thought the ref had a stinker.

I thought our defence looked fine and in the second half I thought the midfield looked really special.

We do need a general in the middle there but all four today played well individually and as a unit. Perhaps Donnati will emerge as the leader.

Nakamura was really exciting and the Spanish commentators loved him. Aiden needs learn from his error but I thought he added much to the second half and I agree that it's a good sign that he didn't let his cock up ruin his match. The Aberdeen goal was offside.

I was a bit disapointed with McDonald but Kenny Miller deserves his wages this week. JVOH is an enigma. I think he oozes class but seems to lack fire in his belly - the Dutch way perhaps.

Fantastic result and very god performance all round - no-one played poorly.

The auld geezer incident? Only in Scotland! It's fine that a steward makes a note and subsequent report of what he perceives to be inappropriate behaviour from the bench. But what the hell was he doing brandishing his book and engaging in any discussion with any official from Celtic?

I think Gordon had a bee in his bunnet all afternoon and I would rather he hadn't got involved at all. However quite how they explain the red card is anyone's guess.

    Only in Scotland!

    On the game...thoughts were :

    1. Loved how we stuck at our gameplan of good passing football and didn't resort (apart from Caldwell) to the continual long punt.

    2. Has last season's Kenny Miller been abducted ?

    3. Has last season's Lee Naylor been abducted ?

    4. Worry that with a mixture of refereeing incompetence, lack of refereeing protection to the footballers and the relative lightweight nature of our team, that the hammer throwers of the southside do not prosper.

Would like to see us add some strength (with skill and guile) over the next two weeks.

Excellent result and overall, I was pleased with the performance. Only criticism I would have is that we looked a bit easy beat in the 50-50's, especially in the middle of the park. Thought the challenge on Aiden for their goal was a foul, as Severin came through the back of him, making contact with player 1st, ball 2nd. However, having already stated on here that I feel our biggest danger this season will come from the men in the middle, Richmonds performance today came as no surprise. And yes, I did think it would be as blatant as this, because after all, who's going to stop it?
As far the Aberdeen official who came running down the stairs, he should have been politely told to calm down, before being told to get tae or he was getting the jail. There is no way on this earth that he could see what was going on from where he was.
Anybody who disagrees is either called Traynor or has another agenda (or both).

Done well against the 12 men of Aberdeen. McGeady although fouled for their goal needs to stop dithering on the ball especially 30 yards from his own goal. Spanish commentators were just generally positive and enthusiastic. Bearing in mind i've had a few...

one Aberdeen tackle late in the 2nd half brought about a comment about the 100% desire typical of the Scottish game and it wasn't put in a snidey way. Just a very unspanish appreciation for football played a different way. My spanish mates are very rigid in their ideas about football and are very disparaging about any physical element.

They loved the GOOOLAAAZZOOS of Miller and Donati like any footbal fan would.

    Paul,
i think your headline is a bit tabloidesque and misleading.

i dont think the manager was subjected to any attack, vitriolic or otherwise.

the abdeen official was informed (incorrectly) that the asst manager had gave the home fans the vicky.
the official, heatedly, marched down to inform police/match official.
our manager then went to defend his asst.

not sure the abdeen official or gordon did anything wrong.

what was wrong was the ref sending the manager to the stand.
what was also wrong was the asst manager goading the home fans.

if archie knox had tried that at parkhead the celtic fans, to a man (and bhoy) would have been livid.

the outcome will be a sense of injustice which will unite the dressing room and the fans pulling gordon closer to their bosom.

all in all a good days work........

You saw nothing wrong in the finger-pointing of the Aberdeen official? You saw nothing wrong that he did not appear to consult with the policeman but ran directly to remonstrate with GS? GS was subjected to a verbal volley from the official which we canonly assume from pictures and no sound was vitriolic - are we really to believe that he was only doing his job and reporting a complaint from someone seated in this sponsors/family section?

Moreover, it would appear that too many fans fall into the 'I pay my money' category these days, all too ready to report a minor matter to officials/stewards/police while hurling verbal vitriol towards those who are supposed to be whiter than white.

    Back the manager, now, always.

The ref today was totally out of his league. The tackle that flew in when he awarded fouls in the first half. The tackle on Gary when he pulled him over and the tackle on Scott when he gave a foul and never booked either Aberdeen players was ridiculous.

The amount of their players rolling about after they fouled our players was unbelievable.

This is what we will expect for the rest of the year.

mcgrory whats the difference with pittrodire or the bigotdome, When Artur done the salute just before half time it was saw as a laugh I said to my mates if he doen it at the bigot dome there would be uproar. Work it out!!!

    Greenlion,

    I was so angry today.

The game was never going to be played in a good spirit.

Aberdeen players were very much in our faces, if we moved, kick us, if we stood, still kick us.

Then to really rub our noses in it, lie down and play dead.

As for that self important egoist of a Stand Steward, he should really be charged by the police for Public Affray.

His behaviour was disgraceful, his manner and his hand actions were those of a tyrant and troublemaker.

If Aberdeen Football Club have any moral standing, they should censure the man for overstepping his authority, they should appologise to our manager and to our club.

I will not hold my breath waiting for this to happen.

ARE WE, CELTIC PLAYERS,OFFICIALS AN SUPPORTERS TO BE SITTING TARGETS FOR ANY TWOPENCE HALFPENNY OFFICIAL WHO TAKES IT INTO HIS HEAD TO HAVE A GO AT US?

Tommy Burns told Radio Scotland that the steward told LIES AND THAT THE LANGUAGE USED WAS DISGRACEFUL.

I would ask Tommy to tell the world his story.

HOW THE REST OF SCOTTISH FOOTBALL KATE US.

TO ALL CELTIC SUPPORTERS, IT IS TIME TO CLOSE RANKS, WE HAVE A COMMON ENEMY AND HE CERTAINLY DOES NOT HAVE RED HAIR.

I'd imagine that if, before he arrived, Gordon Strachan harboured any doubts about our perceptions as to the way our club and fans were treated by the media and the rest of Scottish football, then those doubts are now well and truly dispelled.
In his "devi dug" interview last week, he was merely expressing an honestly held opinion, and one which may have found support among some of us on this blog. However he has now found to his cost, that it was the moment that the media were waiting for. Up until then, he had treated the media exactly the way I would have expected him to. Ask a stupid question, get an appropriate reply. Now, having given them an interview, they have used it as fuel to stoke the flames of unrestrained hatred towards our club.
No-one but those in the immediate vicinity of today's touchline incident will know exactly what was said by the Aberdeen official.
    His demeanour spoke volumes.
Tommy Burns is quoted on air as saying that he, the official, "told blatant lies".
Personally, I'll take Tommy Burns word for it.

Just been reading some of the Dons websites. They're claiming that WGS gave the fans behind him the 'vicky'. He tried to explain that it was referring to the 'two' goals we'd just scored. They get that pent up about it that they complain to the police, the stand supervisor and anyone else who'd listen. Tommy Burns is a legend and knows how to respond to this sort of stuff...with dignity and humour. The way it should be.

I think Lee Naylor and Mark Wilson both did well today.

I know Wilson had a go at Naylor at the Aberdeen goal for not doing more to stop the ball coming in, but I recall one high ball from the right to the back post and Naylor making sure the attacker couldn't connect properly with the ball.

Looked to me like he had learned a lesson and he defended it very well.

Wilson did well all afternoon. He's strong and bright and kept his concentration. At no moment was this more evident than when he took a yellow card for the team.

Obviously neither of them is Alan Cafu Hutton, but they're doing fine.

We will lose goals in a lot of games, but we will score many, many more.

Clean sheets are not the Glasgow Celtic Way, discuss.

These self-important, Celtic-hating tubes are everywhere in Scottish fitba, from the head of the SFA, to the dj booth at Love St. Our continuing success sticks in their craw something rotten...good.

The day Gordon Strachan starts to suffer these fools is the day he loses what makes him great.

A couple of thoughts on the game...

At 1-1 Darren Mackie missed a free header on the 6yard line. He really should have bagged it with minimum fuss - this was a big turning point I feel.

Naka's skill is a joy to behold, but his commitment today was astonishing. He's a gem.

Third goal today was a work of art. Every now and again (ICT in the cup last year, his 2nd v Benfica) Kenny Miller really can pull something special out the bag. I've said it before on here - we should definitely keep him.

Up until now, it appears to be accepted by those close to the incident that the person making the alleged gesture was Gary Pendrey. Coud it be the that Dons fans are just making it up as they go along? Surely not?

If Gordon Strachan did anything wrong it was to inflame the situation further by engaging the fat no-mark jobsworth official in conversation at all.

If he attempted to intervene on Gary Pendrey's behalf to pour oil on the waters, he failed. Nevertheless, I'm glad he reacted passionately.

During the Rapid Vienna mis-en-scène at Celtic Park, a guy near us in the Jungle shouted out: "Don't just stand there Hay, get into them."

Davie then walked towards the Rapid Vienna dug-out and made an attempt at communication.

When asked later if he had been tempted to become more involved in trying to find out what on earth they were playing at, he uttered the immortal phrase: "I don't speak Austrian."

Somehow, I think a lack of ability in the Austrian or any other language would not have been enough to hold Gordon Strachan back. The same is true of Martin O'Neill and that's exactly what I think we need in a Celtic manager.

John Barnes couldn't even be bothered to become involved when it was going off inside the Celtic dressing-room.

Whilst Kenny's work ethic is magnificent, his goals come in spurts and I'd still like to see the club purchase a 30 goal a season striker.

I'd love Kenny to stay and spring from the bench (where he is at his most effective) but would he want this given his international career ambitions ?
