Celtic report debt down and profit at last!

Celtic PLC reported a profit of £15.04m for the year ending 30 June 2007(2006: £4.22m loss), its first profit since 1999.

Turnover was up 31% to £75.237m (2006: £57.859m), largely due to participation in the Uefa Champions League, the previous season Celtic failed to reach the first round proper of either European tournament.

The £15.04m profit was considerably influenced by the sale of Stilyan Petrov, Stephen Pearson, Ross Wallace and Stanislav Varga, which earned the club £9.40m during the period. Player sales and purchases are balance sheet transactions and are not included in turnover or expenditure figures.

In the year, £14.4m was spent on new player acquisition, including those purchased over the summer. While most of this cash will have been paid during the period, the effects of the spend on the profit and loss account will be amortised over each players contract period.

The club was still in debt at the year end, but only to the tune of £9.165m.

A key underlying indicator for the club is the relationship between operating expenses, which were £59.283m (2006: £53.674m) and the previous year’s turnover, £57.859m, achieved with only £0.75m European income.

Operating expenses do not include debt servicing or player acquisition charges, but are a reasonable indicator of non-variable running costs. With the previous year's turnover so close to this figure with very little European income, the potential for damaging losses is marginal.

Celtic are in excellent financial shape. Champions League income is clearly crucial to the club’s development plans, but the worst-case-scenario should not present too many challenges.

    Dear Kitalba,

Well said, well said. We will have to stand up against injustices if and when they are carried out against us. If the club doesn’t want to involve itself in taking on the football authorities through fear of further punishment or whatever, then it is indeed for us as Celtic supporters to show the SFA through a televised coordinated action, our contempt of their incompetence/corruption, or simply blatant dislike for us.
The season has just started, and we’ve shown everyone after the 3 -1 result we’re not going to drop the points they were hoping for, and they haven’t been able to dock us points or fine us through our singing or behaviour. But having a go at us through our manager is something just as serious. We have to react.

Gordon Strachan is being victimised. Celtic is being victimised.

    Hail Hail

If I understand correctly, the transfer fees paid for Brown, McDonald, Donati and Killen will have been paid before 30th June and included as expenditure in the accounts presented today.

If so, seems like good business sense to spend when "flush" with money and minimise any big effect on the accounts for the next 12-months even if we do not make the Group stages of the Champions League with its resultant "loss" in income.

Celtic First, I’ll go into the comparables with Rangers after more reading. Their turnover is 57% of ours.

‘GG wages to turnover ratio is 48.4%.

Antsman, no. The £4.99m debt is net debt. In other words, the club will have money is some accounts, but will owe loans greater than this amount.

You are correct, the half year accounts showed a profit of just below £18m.

    BlantyreKev:

    In your defence of ….

It’ll never come to it: they haven’t got the bottle.

Should the powers that be, deem it wise in their, stupidity, to ban Gordon Strachan to the stand: then in a colossal show of empathy and in solidarity with the manager of our great club, in parallel support of our ethos; a unique and jaw dropping, show of dissent, must be our protest

Looks like our manager is in trouble again. Justified? Make your own mind up.
Irrespective do you honestly believe his conduct under duress merits a ten match ban to the stands. Is there any precedence for such a sentence as insidiously promoted through literal innuendo in, ‘The Scotsman’?

Would you back him and if so what would you do?

I don’t know what we could do… that would be so visibly and audibly striking… as to incite others to ask the question… WHY? Why are they doing that?

Maybe as the huddle forms if the crowd were to face away from the pitch and a crescendo of booing could greet the world. Believe me; real time pictures are beamed around the world and into homes devoid of bias. Curiosity of the paradox, that would be the huddle apparently booed; and the Celtic support showing their collective back to authority, would raise authentic searching, questions in, impartial countries.

Around the globe the questions asked would demand to be answered. If greeted with ignorant silence, then those responsible would be held by the global football fraternity, in total contempt and considered ridicule.
In England, in Ireland; in the USA, in Canada, in Wales; in Australia; in Spain; in Japan; in China; the Middle East; the Far East; South America too: all around this news hungry globe.
Questions would demand… an answer and silence would demand… an explanation.
Bring the Hypocrisy to the eyes and ears of the world in the simplest, extrovert, show of solidarity, the football world has ever seen. We are, after all, talking about the power of the Green Machine that is the world’s greatest supporters.

Let our home grown commentators explain to the world that it is not in fact the huddle that is being booed but instead the administrative powers, that govern our league that are being called to task and booed in despairing judgement. Our contempt is our refusal to acknowledge your presence. Our collective booing would be our collective indictment of your bias.

You wouldn’t have to be a lover of Gordon Strachan to justify your participation. Your credentials as a Celtic supporter, would implore your inclusion, in a class act conviction of the truly guilty.

Could you imagine the impact of photos that would be syndicated around the world; if for their novelty factor alone?
The pictures would be both stunning and intimidating in equal measures.
Could you imagine how together the players in the huddle would feel?
Can you imagine how intimidating the sight and sound would be to opposition players and officials too?

    Let them deal with that.

Or we could simply turn the other cheek and meekly in silence, like poor lost souls, accept our punishment in a non-show of weak, impotent and pathetic obedience.
Oh! That my father, never see the day, I disgraced myself in my indifference.
I shamed myself and what I believe in because I couldn’t climb the mountain of my very own lethargy. My silence is my defence in adversity.

Obedience is the plea of your soul to admit your beliefs and morally and actively defend them.

Anyway, it probably won’t come to that. But for an hour or so I had the most fanciful of protests, stunningly simple bloodless revolts playing through my minds eye.
It was a fearsome picture at that. 60,000 as 1 in defence of 1 against many.
Numbers like that… for sure… it was just a dream. Nice one though.

If however, their stupidity rules the day. All of the above I would reinvoke.
For every week he spends in the stands, is a week our team is denied a level playing field, for which all our oppositions would surely be grateful.
For every week he spends in the stands, is a week we as a support are denied the immediate influence of our manager.
For every week he spends in the stands, it would be just one more slap in the face and a public display of contempt for us and our great club by those who mean us most harm.

Gordon Strahan might flippantly shrug it off. Inside he will be raging. Celtic as a club might keep a gentlemanly silence. But I hope, they finally show the courage of all our convictions, and come hell or high water, they stand by their appointed and my, if not your, anointed manager.
He is one of us. He might not have been three years ago but any fool can see… he is now… one of us. He publicly delights in his position of Celtic manager.
I can’t speak for anybody else but I was born into the Celtic Family, I was confirmed into the Celtic Family with over forty years of resolute support I’ve earned my anorak.
And I extend my personal acceptance of Gordon Strachan, warts an’ aw, as one us. Whether it means ought, to anybody else, or not. I would gladly stand in a bar and argue, debate, talk Celtic with the wee man, any day of the week.

I saw the intensity on his face every time the cameras panned onto him.
I saw the pain and hurt on his face every time something obviously didn’t go right.
I saw the passion for our club animated in smiles of joy and scowls of animosity.
He is Scott Brown only twenty odd years his senior.
I saw the affection he has for his players, his staff, and the clubs supporters.
I saw a man with integrity, devoid of pretence or self-serving chameleonic acts, go to the support of one of his staff, to deny an agitated sheep dip sniffer monopoly in abuse.
I saw a man who cared every bit as Martin O’Neil cared and he didn’t come pre-ordained. His affection is DIY and home grown but it is transparently sincere for all that. It is not, is not an act.
The stresses are ageing him daily.
Yet still some say he is not one of us… Well… if that is the case you losers… neither am I.

What price a friend who’ll shake my hand and clasp my shoulder when adversity is at my door?
That, my friend, is my friend.
Not false of promise and loud of mouth.
Simple in a demonstration of kinship and acceptance..
I’d shake your hand Gordon Strachan.
I’d shake your hand before I’d shake many another’s hand.

In case some of you haven’t noticed. Gordon Strachan does not wear the suit of non allegiance that so many charlatan managers of other clubs do.
No… in case you haven’t noticed, he chooses to wear our clubs crest on his chest, in a very public display of where his heart now lies. That crest and all its tribulations are so painfully, obviously, reflected in his face. He is carrying a lot of weight.

Are you the charlatan supporter? The good guy die for Celtic kinda guy?

Go on, take a look at yourself in the mirror… go on... put the strip on… look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself this question.

Do I care as much as he cares?

If I saw a Celtic supporter in trouble, any Celtic supporter, I’d hope and pray that I would have the courage and grace to go to his aid. I sincerely hope I’d do so.

Being a supporter means a lot more than being a mouth in my eyes.

But then it won’t come to that. They’ll see sense. Won’t they?

Me I’ve had enough of them.
If it comes to pass then I want to do something. I’ve had too many years of turning the other cheek.
If it comes to pass then I want to do something in protest. Apathy… I’ll leave to others. I’m not very good at dispassion.

But then as I said, I’m a wee bit paranoid and I’m as usual over reacting to the presupposed. They haven’t got the bottle to make it happen. Probably the stupidity, that is quite apparent, but not the bottle.

Just ask yourself two last questions…

If the worst happens, will I be bothered?

If the worst happens, will I be counted among the support of my club? Or will just be one of the talkers?

But then I over react to the presupposed.

Tbis is obviously excellent news, and a significant milestone on the club's financial journey to rude health. Huge credit must go to Peter Lawell for managing this process, and to WGS for implementing the football goals, while accomodating the financial necessities.

Regarding WGS' probable ban. I think that we need to be careful that our protest can't be twisted into a protest at the club. you know that they will if they can. "Celts fans turn back on club as signing spree dries up!" Does anyone else gain comfort from having TB there if WGS is ill / banned. I love having him around, I also think this celtic team plays football after his own heart, he must love coaching them.

We are more than a football club club! we have that extra something that others could only dream about.

Now more than ever we need to stick together and stand against injustices against us.

It was there for all to see how much our club means to WGS and even if he is not the favorite of some people we should get behind him as one.

PS. I think the myth that Celtic fans do not like WGS is just that, a myth kept going and made to grow by a media looking for any excuse to condemn us.

    Kitalba,

Good post.I don't think that any Celtic supporter could disagree with your sentiments.

However, your suggestion of a mass booing during the Huddle sounds like a massive own goal to me. That's the opposition supporters job.

The best form of protest is the Celtic Way.

Stick the ball in the back of the net and keep doing it more than our opponents and you will find that we will clean up on the trophies on offer.

    They will not like it.

As in any struggle with Establishments, those who control the media, win the propaganda war.

Therefore, any visible protest attempted can be spun against us.

By song and by chant, especially in support of our manager, will carry more weight than booing at the Huddle.

    We Shall Overcome.

    Kitalba -

    Bang on.

I believe that Gordon Strachan is now being targetted by haters of our club, both in the stands and in the establishment, in much the same way that Neil Lennon was before him.

The neds in the crowd subject him and his staff to a shower of abuse. Then when he rightly refuses to stand idly by and take it, the "officials" and the SFA step in.

They are attemptingto drive a wedge between the Celtic Support and the Celtic Manager - AND THEY MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO SUCCEED.

We can react in two ways to this sustained attack. Either stand idly by and take it, or close ranks and show them that it only knits us together and makes us stronger.

Me, I favour the same option as yourself.

As regards how to express this, there might be various alternatives. The "booing during the huddle" plan is, as you note, open to being misconstrued. If we were to take such an option, it would have to be coupled with something else, some means of showing our passionate support for our manager.

I would also like to see the players speak out on the matter.

In any case, we will have a clearer view of the whole picture after any disciplinary hearing...

Aren't we ahead of ourselves on two fronts here?

    1. The referee had no option but to send off WGS, he came over and was advised by John Underhand to do so. John Underneathcontempt however has to take a look at himself. There was intense discussion on the track, nothing aggressive and then the finger pointing from above started and a policeman got involved. WGS got involved because it was an official and a policeman, this was not a rash challenging of a fan, he had every right to get involved.

John Underbelly however decides in an instant (even though he did not see or hear the start of the incident as he was still talking to others on the track) that as WGS has climbed onto the lower fence that he has lost it, looks around with a show of indignance and very demonstrably indicates that WGS has gone off on one. This was simply not the case. It was an act of shameful ignorance on the part of Underclass.

Now apparently Underminingweerunt is WGS defence at the hearing!!?? Sounds like the beaks have reviewed what actually happened and are scurrying for a way out.

So surely only when we hear the outcome can we start talking about shows of support and demonstrations etc. We've seen much worse in the past.

    2. Why is anyone having a go at Gary Pendrey without decent evidence? If he held up two fingers in one hand and one on the other that was clearly "2-1" gesture. Maybe ill advised but come on, hardly actionable. If it was just two fingers on one hand then yes, to camouflage it as an indication of the scoreline is stupid, but since there is no evidence yet, as I said, why don't we all start from a position of solidarity? (brother!)

It's all gone a bit OTT as far as I can see, any chance to let it blow over will be grasped by the bumbling morons at Hampden I'd think.

Excellent news from the club. Well done to all involved who have managed to turn around the clubs finances while still delivering trophies.

I had forgoten this little story (linked in Paul's finance section):

    Murray 'to wipe out debt'

David Murray recently returned as Rangers chairman

Rangers chairman David Murray will next week announce plans to completely wipe out the club's debt within a year.

Last week, Murray announced plans for a £57m share issue, to which he will contribute £50m.

But while Rangers are expected to announce an increase in their debt to £72m next week, Murray aims to eliminate that entire amount.

"We can't spend as we did in the past or have continuing losses," said the returning Rangers chairman.

"No football club is generating enough to spend like we used to. It's my intention, in the region of a year, to eliminate debt totally," he added.

Of the share issue, he said: "I'm not demanding or expecting any of the ordinary shareholders to take them up - they already offer the club a lot in buying season tickets.

"But I intend to take up £50m and I've spoken to some large players involved and hopefully it will all be taken up."

    -----------------------

That was in June 2004. Well....here we are 3 years later and guess what their debt is 16.5M.

So much for the moonbeams.....how these liars get away with pulling to wool over the eyes of their fans and the Scottish media is beyond me. Why does no one pull Sir Moonbeams up over his consistant lies.

What about Gordon Strachan makes a complaint to the police the next time someone subjects him to a level of abuse that would be an arrestable offence if done in the High Street, and insists that action be taken against the shouters?

There's this odd notion that because you've paid to get into a football ground you can shout what you like for as long as you like. Time to put a stop to it. At whatever ground it happens.

But he relates a story from the past regarding John Greig (Heid Host) getting up and giving a wee speech before Derby games the end went something like this - If you support the other team and they score could you keep your celebrations to a minimum and remember where you are -

Am awaiting this to become a new tenet of Scottish football...

TANNOY ANYWHERE - Could I remind all Celtic supporters that in the event of their team scoring could they refrain from any show of positive emotion, as it can offend. And could I take this opportunity to extend this warning to the coaching staff and players of Celtic Football Club.

hopefully the new strip sales will cover the money we have not made from trips to poland and japan this year.

also the home CL qualifier against spartak should generate another £1m+

i would not expect this season to be as good as we have spent more money for transfers net, at this moment also have a much higher wage bill

    Let the sustainable development continue.

On the last thread I asked if there was a change of heart in the manager and boardroom about KM's future. Your previous posts had indicated that he was for the off probably this month.

I think there may be parallels with the manager's first season when it looked like Shaun Maloney may have been off before a few games showed his worth to the team. Maybe Kenny has now done so and may go on to have a season similar to Shaun that season.

A goal similar to Shaun's against Ran666ers would be nice.

Kojo, thank you for your kind words, please pass my regards to the boss. Remember those dark days of 2004? You bet I do.

The financial debate has matured immeasurably since then, from “where did all the Seville money go”, a pervasive sugar-daddy syndrome, and (inexplicably) the policies of Zsa Zsa being held up by Celtic fans as an example of good stewardship, to an acceptance of the stark truth:

    1. Celtic invested in football operations to the highest extent of reason, so much so they lost money for seven consecutive years.

    2. This policy was fruitful. The club are now streets ahead of all Scottish competition, and over-achieved practically all of the expectations of their past critics.

On Brian Quinn; his involvement in our pre-eminence is considerable.

    McManus69, no sign yet.

Steeelica, I don’t know if there has been a change of heart on KM.

Lostrambling, 48% of turnover is as low as wages have been in many years, and well within sustainability.

What else are we going to spend the money on, Brasso?

Oh ye of little faith, your wish will be answered later on tonight once I have finished my Monday shift.

I am currently trying to finesse a few mix rates to try and sort out some issues as we go towards F/PESO compliance on my latest project. The usual nonsense but it pays the bills.

Consequently the detail will have to wait but as usual the accounts make interesting reading. The one question I do have is why were this season's new players brought in under last year's accounts?

Are the board too embarrassed to show that we would have been cash positive if the usual signing conventions had been stuck too, that is the 1st July for the big announcement?

Or was it a case of use it or lose it with the board, the budget for last year whether it was £5mill or 7mill was time limited and if it hadn't have been spent that was it. Speculation of course but you have wonder why? Something amiss somewhere.

The one thing that has come to the fore over the past week has been the background noise from official and unofficial club channels that we will try and tough this year out with our current squad which means no net spend in 2007/08.

Given the state of our defence and the support's aspirations that is some gamble.

But as noted previously we really do have a "debt nutter" in our midst who, when it comes to nightmares over "black" days in his career has more problems with Wednesday than Sunday.

Let me introduce to "spending calenderisation" a financial game played by all organisations great and small to make sure the figures fit with company policy or the narrative being put across by the board.

Delay in spending the SP (+ RW / SV) transfer fee of £7mill+ would have led to a cash surplus on the books and that is not the story the board want to tell at the moment.

Also I wonder if you could help with the interesting provision that has appeared in the accounts:

    =======
    £2.66m (2006: £0.40m) in
respect of a provision for impairment of intangible fixed assets.
    =======

Anybody got any background on this?

Madmitch - Never saw any such article with WGS saying anything of the sort..must have missed it. What paper was it in?

As for "Impairment of Intangible Assets"...it did not just appear this year.....as for a definition:

Intangible assets are typically expensed according to their respective life expectancy.

Intangible assets have either an identifiable or indefinite useful life. Intangible assets with identifiable useful lives are amortized on a straight-line basis over their economic or legal life, whichever is shorter. Examples of intangible assets with identifiable useful lives include copyrights and patents.

Intangible assets with indefinite useful lives are reassessed each year for impairment. If an impairment has occurred, then a loss must be recognized. An impairment loss is determined by subtracting the asset's fair value from the asset's book/carrying value. This impairment loss may only be reversed under certain circumstances. Trademarks and goodwill are examples of intangible assets with indefinite useful lives.

From an establishment which tolerated a professional club employing a sectarian policy regarding work, to accepting in excess of 40,000 supporters singing sectarian songs and chants on a weekly basis, it only shows the depths of their depravity.

This should be ignored and ridiculed at every level and if Celtic are in any way punished A large march and rally against institutional Bigotry should be arranged.
