Celtic’s year viewed through a 90 minute panorama

Despite earning a very credible draw on a sweltering plastic pitch in Moscow, Celtic will have to play at their very best to progress to the Champions League group stage. One slip, a brief lapse of concentration, and Spartak could be handed control of the tie.

I don’t know what is it like to motivate yourself when you earn over £500k per annum; they will have different to the reasons from those that make me pull on my trousers each morning, but all their training, their careful eating, the tours away from home, the pride and joy at earning a contract with Celtic in the first place; for Celtic players, it is all about tonight.

Nothing else matters.

At 7:45pm, 60,011 Celtic fans and players will engage in a hugely important game of football. The next 12 months of our joint existence as a football club can be viewed through the panorama of 90 minutes. The game will not be ours by default; it will need to be earned by skill, enduring effort, concentration and a whole lot of backing from supporters.

We do not win them all, but tonight is time to touch the same place in our soul we found the day Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester United and Benfica came to town.

I have confidence in the Celtic players; I am proud of each and every one of them for achieving at a level I could only dream about. Make some great memories Celtic.

This isn't really football but I thought it may be useful to some of you over the next few days depending on how it goes tonight :-)

Prior to the game, we will also be reminded that none of this really matters with the memory of Antonio Puerta.

Hopefully we will beat Spartak, draw Sevilla and be able to pay our respects in the way only we can.

    Go Celtic!

    BRING IT ON!

It will be cat and mouse for 30 minutes then Spartak will score. We'll respond and equalise by half time. 2-1 to the hoops on 75. 2-2 on 84 and a hell raising last 6 plus 3 injury time will see Scott Brown seal the winner and send us home in raptures.

    Either that or 0-0.

It was splashed all over their back page. So before patting yourself on the back - a quick check will reveal that they published the story a full three days before you claim to have 'dug it out' on Monday. There is no conspiracy here Im afraid.

You have to hand it to BBC Scotland - their way with is impressive. Last night, whilst showing the Spartak players at the airport Rhona informed the nation that Celtic were "nursing" a 1-1 scoreline in to the game. And so we limp on into the tie.
Tomorrow I look forward to hearing how we weakly hobbled into the group stage, and hopefully how we fell face first into pot 2.

I remember how we played at CP after we came back from Amsterdam with a 3.1 win. We didn´t know how to approach that game and hence the 0.1 loss. Thank god that this one is different. I know we dont need to score but we must go out looking for one first and keep Spartak on the back foot until the ref blows up for time.

I hope it doesn´t go to penalties. If it does and with King Artur in fine form I believe that it will swing our way. It may be ok against Milan away but not Spartak at home. I would be interested in hearing from anyone with a photographic memory how many times we have been involved in European shoot outs and what´s the statistics there.

If we win this one and strengthen before the deadline. Then we could go all the way and I truly belive that.

If given the choice of -
    1. Bomber suddenly passes away tonight and Celtic progress to the CL group stages, or
    2. Bomber survives and we are eliminated.

What would you chose on the pretext that your anonimity would be preserved?

This is going to be one of the most nervous days of my life, right up there with the wedding day, man u, milan away last year and numerous others celtic related. This is a bit more nervy than most considering what is at stake. Finely balanced, could go either way, clawing onto an away goal, 1 second from losing the tie, jeez I'm gonna need a few snifters before the game for these nerves, but I'm going to stick by my prediction from 2 weeks ago, 1-1 in the first leg and 1-0 tonight. My stomach's doing cartwheels, has been since first thing this morning, cant wait to set off for the game, only 6 hours to go.

    Come on the Celtic!!!!!!!!!

Aviewfromabove, take a look back at my ‘State of the club’ article from a few weeks back for financial info for seven years, it takes too long to collate this stuff, so I am not going to do it later for five years.

On the PLC not narrowing the odds a bit, our net spend this summer has been £7m. How much do you think would have been the right amount?

I believe most people would expect a figure in this region, but I also believe that whatever the figure, there will be someone saying …

“Spend more money, spend more money, spend …..”

First of all nobody from our club asked my for a public retraction.

I offered it in reciprocation of the courtesy and trust that our club extended to me, a mere supporter, and a distant one at that.

It is the least I can do and though I am not too happy in myself about the circumstances of it. I am happy with the way the club deported itself and the professional and very tolerant manner in which I was treated.

    Continually.

Along with a lot of very devoted supporters of our club, in the country, in which I reside in, I will not get to see the game live tomorrow.

It is unfortunate but such is life.

With the game not being shown live in this country our club was acting in the best interest of all supporters, in all countries around the world, especially Scotland.

Unequivocally our club would not be held to ransom. What has occurred is unkind to certain supporters down here but I am entirely satisfied that our club did all that it realistically could, not to let us down.

I am humbled by the way I was treated by our club.

The brown stuff surely hit the fan.

I along with others have emails that vindicate the actions of our club but cannot say anything further. The moral of confidentiality binds me but trust me our club did right.

I am often guilty of reading between the lines in certain communications and coming up with the wrong conclusions. On this occasion I did not read between the lines and came up with wrong conclusion.
Sometimes you can shaft yourself every which way you turn.

Mate trust me. I was wrong. Albeit I have emails from other parties that led me to reach the wrong conclusions but I was wrong.
When I do eventually get back to Glasgow I hope we can have a beer in the company of a few others. I like your passion. I will gladly share a pint and a conversation.

Here’s one for you and you really couldn’t, make this up.
At around six this evening, our time, I was conversing with some of the CSC members local clubs and OUR club. Obviously, about this subject matter.

I get an email and a phone call from of all places The Rangers Supporters clubs of this country. “Don’t trust what you’re being told was the jist of it”. They were right.

I unreservedly apologise to our club and to its commercial management team.

I know that you agree with the following:

Celtic's Spending Budget Figure for new incoming transfers has been categorically stated, many times in the past, on this Blog.

The Budget is Seven Million Pounds NET... was last year... and this year is no different.

The word NET, is of extraordinary importance.

Keep that word in mind when digesting this information.

A favorable run by Celtic , in the Cl,this year, will see an increase in that figure come next summer window.

How do I come by this information, is of no importance.
    Trust me.

The Celtic profit figure has not the slightest influence, in the amount put aside for the acquiring of incoming personnel.

The Incomers Budget is a separate entity, which is decided well in advance, and is adhered to religiously, under the present Administration.

Only events of biblical proportions will invoke a change.

I may as well admit, this much.

The above information was given to me by my boyfriend.

I was in Oz during our run to Seville. I used to get up at 5am and get the bus into Sydney CBD, a wee internet cafe on George Street.

Paid my £4.99 each game and got a PPV version on the 'fishal web site. Absolutely hopeless connection and hopeless quality when it did come through. The line was shared by all who were in the cafe so the more that came in the poorer the stream. Obviously as the games kicked off at 6.45am there weren't too many about and I usually got the first half not too bad. Folk would come in and I'd stare at them angrily til they left again but some put up with my glare and the second half was always one constant buffering session and I would switch to audio only.

One wee Japanese guy was always there playing online 'shoot em up' games. I hated that guy. He was making Celtic 'buffer'. The audacity!

That changed with Celta Vigo away. Buffering stopped as BBJ held off his man at the edge of the box and despatched a shot low towards the corner. Then it buffered again just as the ball crossed the 6 yard line!! I had no idea if it went in. Switch to audio, quick! 10 seconds later they were still celebrating and I knew we'd scored. I jumped out my seat, screamed, nearly strung myself up with the cord of the headphones and landed on the floor. My Japanese friend came over to see what the hell had happened, realised what I was doing and smiled with a polite expression that could only have meant "gaun yersel".

One day I'll look back at that like people do at black and white tellies or TV pre-remote control!

Your info on Ronnie L was misdirtected, as I think it was Bloke109 and Whitedoghunch who were debating the big keepers Rangers career, whereas I simply commented on the/our school. As for the Walker brothers, I would agree that John was probably more naturally talented than Andy and was prob the better player at schoolboy level, however, Andy's development (and level of application) at Motherwell, saw him progress markedly in a very short space of time and having played with and against both as adults, there's no doubt that the better player was the one who made a living in the game.

I also played against my former PE teacher when he was at Alloa and even though it resulted in a crowd of my former schoolmates and his former pupils coming along and giving big Ronnie pelters for the full 90 mins, he took it in the spirit it was intended and had a laugh about it afterwards. As Blantyre Kev says, a genuinely nice guy.

    The power of faith!

If you want the banality of cowardly certainty then get yerself along tae Princes Square on Buchannan street and have a swaatch at Focault's pendulum as it traces out its interminable, invariable predetermined path, reflecting and confirming the fact that not only does the earth spin on its access, but it does so with a metronomic regularity of 23.93 hours per cycle.

(Ha. You all thought there was 24 hours in a day. Well adjust your watches now for not only are you older than you think, but tonight’s game is just that wee bit closer!)

As you escalate your way to the top of that monument to capitalism, peer down the rod and bob as, prompted to swing on a single plane, it deviates in harmony with the earth spinning round and round, round and round, never ending or beginning in a never ending…..(whoops nearly broke into song there).

Which when you come to think about it, is a damn good thing since just about everything we rely on to walk, talk, eat, breath, sleep and generally function as human beings is a consequence of this monotonous regularity of the cosmos.

But there again superficially this existence of ours can just seem so depressingly pointless!

Born, Breathe, eat, sleep, work, yer fingers tae the bone, worry, worry, worry, get bashed, stop worrying, get hangover, worry worry worry and die!. Get buried, become one with universe, but have no real say in or influence over anything!

Laws of motion, thermodynamics, relativity, gravity, conservation of energy, genetics… all just part of an accidental orchestral composition now controlled by a manic dictatorial conductor defying us to play flat and not sharp, jazz and not class, greens instead of blues.

As last nights ‘Cote du Rhone Villages’ evaporated from my bloodstream and the burr of the dawn traffic drifted through my open window, I roused from my slumber, looked out of the window, greeted the day with a Gary Pendrey scoreline and contemplated a world that would go through the same old routine as yesterday, will do the same tomorrow, and will keep doing so until such time as the sun’s diminishing fuel causes a supernova, we all disappear in a fireball while in another constellation, another solar system, and another inhospitable planet, an infinitesimal bit of dirt for some reason or another replicates itself and the whole damn thing starts over again.

(Then 4 billion years later the universe will echo to a renewed….. “No Huns on Vulcan…… there’ll be no Huns on Vulcan……”)

But look under the surface , and what do we find. Certainty may allow us to survive, but it is uncertainty that makes us alive!

It is uncertainty dreesed in its Sunday best, the unexpected that makes us laugh and cry, thrive and grow, imagine the future, regret the past.

It is this that makes life worth living.

So its time to play a major instead of a minor, a seventh instead of a diminished and remind that control junkie in the sky with his set score and his focault’s baton of universal laws, that we have our own wee band about to break into his sterile controlled world of stiff shirts, pressed suits and viola strings.

Meet rock and roll and meet ‘the uncertainty principle’, that blip in the universal laws, a ripple in the fabric of space and time, that just gives us the chance of unpredictability, allows the concept of chaos, creates the mirage of control and endows us with the illusion of free-will and choice.

But control and free-will are only mirages and illusions when uncertainty runs unfettered.

Tonight is different. There will be no mirages and no illusions.

Tonight the our wee rock and roll combo is about to hit them chords, batter them scales, and show the world and the great megalomaniac in the sky that this is our world, as we bring the inexplicable uncertainty to heel by the even greater mystery that is faith with its power to service the highest ideals.

Tonight on the celebration of the Feast of ‘Uncertainty’, a party in its honour will be held at Celtic Park, Kerrydale Street Glasgow G40, (arrive 7.15 for a 7.45 start) where each and everyone of us will demonstrate just how ultimately powerful our faith and support can be.

Observers from Moscow will be there to verify the magnificence of what is about to be undertaken.

    So……

As you don your colours, think not that you are going to a football match where the prize may or may not be entry to the Cl group stage; instead think about how those colours arose, think of who has worn them down through the decades, think of the achievements, and think of the sacrifices made to glory the humanity at the core of each and every one of us.

As you walk, drive, fly your chosen route to Celtic Park, bar, computer screen, or radio don’t just think of the ninety minutes ahead and the eleven players on that park, go instead with a smile on your face, a steel in your eye and a gallusness in your stride. Think of tonight as a present to you from the generations that have gone before; a reward that says not only thanks for keeping the flame alight, but one that reminds you of the responsibility to care for the gift and pass it on not only undamaged but enhanced to the generations to come.

As you stand on the slopes of Paradise or watch and listen from afar, don’t just join in with the words, the tunes or applause, instead remind the world of all that has gone before, what we are, why we are here and where we are going. Make the passion shine and explode like a nebulae not to intimidate our visitors but to inspire everyone around you and those who have the privilege to wear the hoops tonight.

As the theatre of the evening unfolds on the greatest stage in the world, don’t just see 4-3-3, or 4-4-2, passes and tackles to be attempted, gaps to be filled, balls to be reached, and goals to be scored, instead harness all that belief and faith inside and around you, shout it out and create in this holy ground an aura of invincibility that will infuse, enthuse, nurture and inspire every player to run a yard faster, sprint a yard further, stretch a foot higher, see a pass better, and take the risks needed to achieve what is necessary.

And then when that greenest of places in this dear green city is rocking and rolling to the sight of heroic deeds on the park, fuelled by the similarly heroic unbending belief off the park, we can all say that we, the players, we the support in the ground, we the watching and listening diaspora– we as one Celtic, harnessed uncertainty, controlled chaos and even if it wasn’t enough it was our very best.

But somehow I think it will be good enough, somehow immovable objects will be moved, unstoppable forces will be stopped, and we will all have played our part!

    So let’s get them Celtic!

    More than a club!

    Hail Hail

    Estadio.

The blog claimed - quite wrongly - that a 'compliant' media swept the Hemdani story under the carpet until after the Red Star game. Was it wrong of me to point out that a variety of media outlets - including the BBC and the biggest paper in the country - actually reported the story on the 14th, three days before you claim to have 'dug it out'? Or is toeing the party line a pre-requesite for making a contribution on what is normally an excellent blog?

To take the Uncertainty Principle a step further. We cannot measure anything accurately because the act of measurement disturbs the object. Thanks for the reply, Are you saying bid Ronnie did start for the first team at rfc.Would have been nice for him if he did, as you say a thouroughly nice bloke.

My one memory of Ronnie was in the Teachers V Pupils 5 a side game played in the main hall one lunch time. I displayed wonderful acrobatic skill to get on the end of a volley which i could not have hit cleaner only to see Ronnie saving it with his face which caused his head to be pushed against the bar. This resulted in a bloody nose for Ronnie and absolute pelters for me from his adoring 4th and 5th year female fans. (Good Times)

Wouldn't argue about the fact that Andy became a great player, you quite rightly caught my drift about schoolboy football and how the players that we all thought were brilliant never really make it.

Nice to hear that both Walker brothers are still playing, I have not ran into either since having left school.

Talking of which I have had to laugh over the last few days at the 'Ditch the Old Firm Tag' debate. I did a search this morning on the previous thread for 'Celtic' and 'Rangers'. At the time I did the search my count was 'Celtic' 99 times and 'Rangers' an incredible 40 times. i.e. For every 10 times we mentioned Celtic we just had to mention Rangers 40 times. (I think a lot of these were of the "Oh No! Rangers have gone through, what if we don't?" variety) Seems like there is still a lot of mileage in the 'Old Firm' tag yet...

Without underestimating Spartak Moscow, I think if the Team AND Fans play to their strengths tonight then we wil emerge victorious! I am looking forward to an exciting and sensational match tonight and I epect both Nakamura and Donatti to score.

I went back and I thank you for your considerations.
Trust me OUR club did the right thing. I am one of the unfortunates but.
Our club looked after the majority, not the, up side down minority, over this issue.

I am selfishly disappointed but I cannot empathizes this enough it had nothing to do with CH67. Nothing at all.
I was led down the wrong track.

These words may lend some context to the issue and with this Im dropping it.

Disrespectful, derogatory, demeaning of our club and its status, demeaning of you and me, as supporters of our club, crass, joke. Cheap.
Come on mate, yer havvin a laff. Arent you?

These, are but a few of the words, that spring to my mind when I think of a third party.

Our club made a business decision for the good of the many at the expense of a few.
The supporters in Scotland are the ones who will benefit the most but if what was alluded to, comes to fruition, these benefits will in time, hopefully not a long time, be enjoyed, in part, by our mates in North America, Australia, Canada, South Africa, etc. etc.

To my mind our club did the right thing. I, (aw-naw) would have done the same and taken the flak.

It was business, hard business, in the interest of its supporters not its customers.

I am not in the slightest bit surprised at Brahim Hemdani wanting out at rangers. His team-mates ganged up on a talented coach who wanted nothing more than to make footballers better players. The ring leader at that time is still the captain and Brahim probably is worth a starting slot - but he is not one of Walters buys and therefore will not be a first pick. Although when rangers need to play football and keep posession Brahim is first name on the team sheet. I wont be sad to see him leave - I think he brings a composure to the rangers defence. They will be worse off without him.

aw_naw : I used to listen to the Beeb World Service on a SW radio when I was out in S. Korea and China during the late 80's and early 90's. It was a Godsend.

Late on a Saturday night, there's me half-cut trying to get a decent signal by draping the extendable antennae over the curtain rail. Eventually I would manage to hear the wonderful sound of Paddy Feeney presenting the Saturday sports show. If I was really lucky, the English game would be boring or totally one-sided so they would switch to a Scottish game.

One particular time this happened was the "Glasgow Derby" at CP when we went 3-1 up before h/t. This was us attempting to exact revenge for the Ian andrews game, I think. I believe the game ended with that scoreline and we let them off the hook yet again.

I might be getting my games mixed up, but that could also have been the game when the Jungle was belting out "Let it be", which had been re-released for some reason.

If for some unforeseen reason we shouldn’t make it through tonight, - is that a song - I found myself thinking well, that’s us got 3-in-a-row in the bag, and the uefa cup with the opportunity to collect coefficient points. Times have changed when I’m feeling that.
