Champions League Pot 2 prospects for Celtic

If results go to form, Celtic will enter the Champions League in Pot 3, needing two higher seeded teams to fail in the final qualifying round before they would reach Pot 2.

In the first leg, Arsenal and Liverpool won away. Sevilla and Valencia have a two and three goal lead respectively, which leaves Werder Bremen, Benfica and Ajax in the third qualifying round and seeded higher than Celtic.

Werder Bremen have found the new season heavy going. They sit mid-table after three games and travel to face Dinamo Zagreb protecting a 2-1 lead. Dinamo are top of the Croatian league having won all six of their games.

Benfica have drawn both their league games this month and reacquaint themselves with Copenhagen after meeting in the group stage of last seasons tournament. Copenhagen are seven games into their season and have every right to fancy their chances of overcoming a 2-1 defeat in Lisbon.

Ajax have most to do, having lost the first leg 0-1 at home to Slavia Prague, who have won all four league games this season.

If Celtic and one other high seeded team fail to qualify, Rangers could move up to Pot 3.

    Afternoon (for me) all!!

I think I may have had a Eureka moment!!

All the Bhoys who are unable to get the games live via their local TV or CH67 need another solution and I may have it!

All UK Digital TV full subscription bhoys should adopt a fellow Tim currently in a coverage blackout who can then buy a slingbox for the UK TV resulting in full viewing pleasure for both parties (so long as the wife doesn't switch it over to Corrie!)...

I'm off to make some wristbands..

An article taken from the official site.

Condolences to Sevilla after player's tragic death

THE world of football has been stunned by the sudden death of Sevilla defender, Antonio Puerta, who suffered a heart attack during his side’s game against Getafe at the weekend.

The 22-year-old defender collapsed on the pitch during the game and team-mates and medical staff who rushed to his side prevented him from swallowing his tongue as he lost consciousness.

He was able to walk from the pitch but he collapsed again in the dressing-rooms and had to be given cardiac resuscitation before being rushed to hospital.

The Spanish internationalist was placed in intensive care and doctors said his condition had deteriorated today (Tuesday) before his death.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell has written to the Sevilla president to express Celtic’s condolences to Antonio Puerta’s family and to everyone at Sevilla, devastated at the tragic loss.

Sevilla’s Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens in Greece, scheduled for tonight, has been postponed.

The thoughts and prayers of the entire Celtic family are with Antonio Puerta’s family and friends at this sad time.

A minute's applause will be held before tomorrow night's game between Celtic and Spartak Moscow as a tribute to Antonio Puerta.

Sorry if this has been posted before.

    Hail Hail

On a complete side note...a question for all you real tech geeks.

Do I buy an HD DVD player or a blu-ray?

With Paramount and Dreamworks only realeasing on HDDVD...as opposed to Sony, MGM, Disney, Fox and Lionsgate who only do blu-ray....Warner Bros being the fence sitters that they are are doing both, although they are supposed to be in negotiations with Toshiba about a HDDVD exclusive deal.

Seems like we have the next Beta / VHS on our hands.

    Johnny Mac, the following link

    http://news.cnet.co.uk/dvdpvr/0,39029670,49292242,00.htm

should take you to a story about relative sales figures of Blu Ray disks versus HD DVD's in the US. Basically it says that Blu Ray is winning this by about 2:1

I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions from this.

  • At 28/08/07 18:02, Johnny Mac said…

Ger - Thanks, I had seen that. However, during the first half of the year Paramount were releasing in both formats and Dreamworks were not releasing in either.

I think I will take the wait and see approach on this one...especially if Warner does go with HDDVD.

  • At 28/08/07 18:06, matt_the_bhoy said…

Isn't it the case that HD DVDs can be made on conventional DVD production lines, whereas Bluray can't, making them infinitely cheaper to produce?

Sony are the instigators of bluray, as they were of Betamax. I think the real case is what kind of films are the highest selling?
They're Blue, but not ray. And they're going with HD DVD, as, 20 years ago, they did with VHS. From that point of view, more HD DVDs are likely to get sold in the longrun.

Tell you what, why don't you buy yourself an HD DVD player, and a PlayStation3 at the same time? ;-)

  • At 28/08/07 18:12, GerM said…

Johnny Mac, fair enough I think "wait and see" is probably the best option. However the fact that Blu ray discs play through Playstation3's means that there are already a lot of Blu Ray players out there. Which I also think is significant.

You may guess (correctly) that I am swayed towards Blu Ray. But I should say that I have bought neither at this point.

I must say I did think my explanation of the "Hun" term was about as plausible as the reason given for Gary "Three Fingers" Pendrey`s semaphore.

You tell me it is a reference to Attila and his band.

WG,Big Wavy, the spirit of Arthur Lee and others, were on earlier listing the musical associations with Spartak.

Sounds like you are all in for quite the musical soiree.

Also, Bazza is suspended, as you rightly pointed out for the Lithuania game but he can play in the game against France 4 days later. The squad that was named today, was for both games.

Now, I am off to lay down since I have now stuck up for them.....

See after all that talk last night about lack of coverage in Australia?

Just seen a similar thread on the Huddle Board about the Republic. Just thought this might be interesting for anyone who's looking to complain to Setanta Australia pty.

    >I have emailed RTE. There address is complaints@rte.ie. Here is the mail I sent them.
Hi there. I have just seen that RTÉ 2 are showing the Arsenal third round qualifying tie agains Sparta Prague live and are showing delayed coverage of Celtic's match against Spartak Moscow. To say the least I find this a little surprising. The Celtic match is not been shown on any other station available in Ireland. They clearly have a far bigger following in this country (and indeed worldwide) than Arsenal but yet again RTE decide to show an English Premier League team ahead of a team with significant Irish connections. It was extremely frustrating last year when you choose to show a meaningless Manchester United European game when they had already qualified ahead of a crucial Celtic game but this just takes the biscuit. Three or fours years ago Celtic and Manchester United enjoyed almost equal coverage on RTE but in the last couple of years it appears as though RTE have a great reluctance to show Celitc. It disappoints me greatly and the decision to show Arsenal ahead of Celtic this Wednesday is one that I simply cannot understand. I have little or no doubt the Celtic match would get far higher ratings (I actually remember looking at the ratings in the 2001/2002 season and Celtic were clearly the most popularly viewed club). I think the analysis provided by RTE in all sports but particularly football is excellent but the editorial decision making clearly leaves a lot to be desired.
    Yours in Sport

    Reply already from RTE:

    Dear Arthur,
You may be interested in the following response from Stephen Alkin, Executive Producer RTÉ TV Sport, to similar e-mail about the screening of the Celtic match.

"We secured the rights to the 2nd leg matches involving Arsenal and Liverpool before the 1st leg games were played. As you would expect, we published this fact and billed and promoted the programmes accordingly.
Late in the piece, last Thursday to be precise, another broadcaster pulled out of the Celtic game and we secured the highlights rights to that match. Celtic football club weren’t keen for us to go live as they were having trouble selling the game to their fans.
It would have been our preference, especially considering the results from the 1st leg, to show the Celtic game live. For the reasons above we are showing the Arsenal match. We will be showing extended highlights of the Celtic game at approximately 10.15pm."

I am also copying you the following press release from RTÉ Sport :

RTÉ Secures UEFA EURO 2008 Broadcast Rights
RTÉ Sport announced today (Tuesday 28 August), that it has added yet another major international sports event to its extensive portfolio by securing exclusive rights to the UEFA Euro 2008 Championships.

RTÉ has successfully secured broadcast rights for the 2008 European Championships, across television, radio and online, further strengthening RTÉ’s extensive soccer coverage.

Exclusive Irish broadcast rights have been secured by RTÉ Television and RTÉ.ie while RTÉ Radio has been awarded national broadcast rights for the entire tournament. Coverage will include the live broadcast of all 31 matches from Austria and Switzerland next summer.

RTÉ is one of the few public service broadcasters in Europe to retain such a strong sports rights portfolio. This latest coup adds to RTÉ’s comprehensive soccer coverage which already includes broadcast rights for the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, two nights live Champions League coverage, Eircom League Live as well as both of the FAI Ford Cup Semi-Finals and the Final.

UEFA’s Director of Marketing and Media Rights, Philippe Le Floc'h paid tribute to RTÉ’s quality coverage, "RTÉ is the leading broadcaster in Ireland and is a long-term partner of UEFA with vast experience in broadcasting major sports events."

Glen Killane, Group Head of Sport RTÉ, said “In an increasingly competitive market we are delighted that UEFA have taken in to account the quality of our coverage and the audiences that RTÉ attracts. We are also proud that they have paid tribute to our strong track record in sports broadcasting. Securing these games further enhances RTÉ’s portfolio of live soccer and enables us to bring yet another major international sporting event to Irish viewers free-to-air”.

RTÉ’s unrivalled team of soccer presenters, analysts and commentators will be on hand throughout the tournament providing their expert analysis and opinion free-to-air. RTÉ Sport will also be broadcasting all of Ireland’s remaining crucial Group D qualifiers starting with the national team’s game against Slovakia on 8 September.

Sean, if you're referring to 'a slow sale' as mentioned in that e-mail from RTÉ, I think that's changed since last Thursday, looking at the fishal site's ticket info:

    uefa champions league q3
celtic v spartak moscow, august 29, ko 1945
    ticket uplifts

The Club would like to ask all supporters who have tickets to uplift to try to do so on Tuesday between 9am and 5pm if possible or during the day on Wednesday. This will help in avoiding long delays and ensure that you can get into the match early. A significant number of tickets have been booked by telephone and internet since Saturday therefore this will result in a high number of uplifts from the Ticket Office. If you can pick your tickets up early it will help you get in for kick off and enjoy the whole match without any delays.

A small number of tickets are on sale for the match and these will be available from the Ticket Office and from the mobile sales outlet until kick off on Wednesday if we have not sold out prior.

Season tickets are not valid for this match.

Red Star are utter garbage. THey can't get down the wing to get a cross in and can't get through the middle. Can't see Rangers losing this one, although they're not making a lot of effort to score themselves.

Have you seen how their fans are penned in? Makes sense given the King comment in the hilarious Talk Sport interview this morning (Brazil doesn't care, does he? One of us and glad to let everyone know. Even his "apology" was tongue in cheek) about the fans being kept away from the city centre, escorted to the stadium, and escorted to the airport.

    I agree with Gordon_J. Looks like a dull 0-0.

    Truly woeful game.

Unless Red Star have a super sub then I can't see them score 1 let alone win by 2 clear goals.

What happened to all the talk of all out warfare on the pitch? I've seen more wild tackles in a pre-season friendly.

Hope S Moscow end up as toothless as this lot !!

    C'mon the Red Star !!!!

As you are all munching dull mince I'm going for a deflection 1-0, yellows & reds, a real sunburst orange, a missed penalty no 1-1, more sunburst orange, another deflection 2-0, breathless refresh, no defenders, more red, a glorious technicolour last 30 minutes

Thanks setting free the bears and matt the bhoy for the ticket update.

That has cheered me up no end because we need a 60,000 sell-out crowd roaring us every minure of the way.

Feel a lot more confident with a full house against a Spartak side that will have very little vocal backing.

My forecast is 2-1 tomorrow, but I think Rangers will go through tonight by default. Spartka are utterly hopeless.

Darcheville just missed a sitter that would have booked Rangers their place,

It's often said that players from the former Yugoslavia have great technique - it's all these guys can do to get the ball under control.

geebee, Romania overtook us 2 Seasons ago, although we've passed them again. The 2 CL spots apply to the top 15 Countries, Scotland are currently ranked 10th, so no real worries there, except for the fact we lose the Seville coefficient for qualifying the Season after next.

I don't like to praise Rangers- but I have to say Walter Smith has improved them 100 per cent in just eight or nine months.

They had an obvious game plan in Belgrade and proved their European tactical mettle by rigidly keeping to it and almost sneaked a couple of goals on the break.

Their performance tonight was well-organised, disciplined and mature even though Red Star were absolutely second rate.

They have height, strength and power and they will give Celtic a good run for their money this season.

We will under-estimate them at our peril.

We have a real contest for the SPL title I believe.

The pressure is now on us tomorrow to make sure they don't have a £10 million advantage over us.

    Come on, Celtic!

    matt_the_bhoy:

We have not overtaken Romania. Taking into account this season, Romania could well finish in fifth place by the end of this european campaign, AHEAD of Germany.

Sadly, not an accurate reflection of their quality, they are carrying the frutis of having three teams in europe at the time, two of them getting to the UEFA Cup quarter finals, and actually playing each other in the quarter finals, so it was a win-win situation. The coefficient overall was only divided by three, leaving a good rating.

Now that they will have six teams regularly qualifying, it will balance out in a few years and they will be between 8th-11th.

Well played Rangers, Celtic need to get there now.

    C'mon Celtic.

Sean South I agree, Walter Smith has bought really well with guys like Whittaker.

Celtic should have bought him, we need consistently attacking wing-backs, not good enough, too much emphasis on forwards who'll not offer enough.
