Heart chief, Spartak can beat Celtic, five to go from Ibrox

It is no exaggeration to suggest that this week could see a £20m swing between Celtic and Rangers. If both or neither club reaches the Champions League group stage, Celtic will maintain their financial advantage over their Glasgow rivals, but if only one club reaches the Champions League, the gap would either be bridged for a season, or turn into a gaping chasm.

In an attempt to take pre-emptive action to stem their financial difficulties, Rangers have agreed to sell midfield player Brahim Hemdani to Osasuna immediately after their Champions League game in Belgrade, a game which Hemdani will start. We understand four others will be paid-off from Ibrox this week.

The Jungle Bhoys would like to thank everyone who offered to assist in the making of the 10,000 polly flags for the Spartak game and have asked me to pass on this message, which is all the more important when you consider the potential impact of Wednesday night:

“We are meeting at Gate 2 on Tuesday at 5pm to set up the display if anyone has a couple of hours to spare and would like to get involved.

Also if anyone would like to assist over the next month in the clean up of the flags please get in touch to brendan.assoc@ntlworld.com.”

Hearts chief, Anatoly Babochka, gave an interview to the Russian media after the rout on Saturday [translated by CQN], “Their support are a twelfth man. It’s very difficult to play there.

“Celtic hurt us, I hope somebody can take a revenge.

“It’s not true that Celtic is a team of only one player, Nakamura. They have good cooperation all over the field. Donati and Brown were particularly effective against Hearts, as were Caldwell and McManus. Wilson, was less effective, but tried to initiate attacks. The only poor player in defense was Naylor.

“McDonald had a very good game; Vennegoor of Hesselink was not bad.

“Celtic were full of fighting spirit.

“Spartak are strong enough to beat Celtic. The most important thing is do not let them score. We had three great chances to score but we did not score the goals.

Who could leave Ibrox? The thing is, they can't offload anyone who's signed for them in the last 12 Months, because of that rule as to how many Clubs you can play for in a year. So the question is what high earners do they have on their books that pre-date PLG? The answer is (to paraphrase Paul Daniels) not a lot... But you'll like it.

Let's not get too exited folks. No doubt that this week is massive for Celtic. I'm cautious however that things could go the other way. We could end up out on our ear and rangers could go through. Remember, we are drawing and they are in the lead. The £20m swing could well go to rangers.

But that scenario would not be the end of the world. We could well go on to have a good run in the UEFA cup.

Paul, this is not a criticism, but earlier this weekend you encouraged a poster to reconsider whether to use the OF tag, which I agree with BTW. Then your next article focuses, in part, on the financial position of both Glasgow clubs. Bit of a mixed message there, maybe?

I think we need to focus on what Celtic need to do. It should not matter to us what happens to them. Do we really need them to suffer when we are successful? If we do then something is wrong.

I can tolerate both teams going through. rangers do not have the squad or quality to compete in the league and regularly lose in the champions league. This will leave the SPL open for us and automatic qualification for the group stages next year.

    Tin hat on.

    Lubo.

    On the OF issue...

There should be occasions were both clubs come together, e.g. local community initiatives, representations to FIFA, UEFA etc. for the Scottish cause, but....

The term is hijacked by the media and used against us more than for us.

There is no need for us to be using a generic term just because there are some rare joint ventures.

There is nothing firm about our relationship, and the only old thing is the intense rivalry.

    Lynn,

I think it will be a good bit of business if celtic get the reported £3m for KM. Forgive me if I use the term asset management. KM was (one of?) the first Bosman player(s) we signed. 12 months later, we could get £3m for him. I say take it.

I like KM and appreciate his work rate and effort. However, he is not the finisher we really need at Celtic. I also respect the guy for having the courage to sign for Celtic. That could not have been an easy decision.

Maybe he knows that he will not be a first pick this season. If so, he has the right to go for 1st team football.

[Or maybe he knows something else about another striker coming to Celtic - from Iceland??]

The BBC guys are in fact, good guys.

Tell me this, if Kenny were not a Celtic player at the moment, would you want us to pay £3m for him. Hmmmm.

Lubo, we cannot deny their existence, nor our financial competition, among other things.

  • At 27/08/07 14:28, HHBhoy said…

Yes Paul, It’s a big week all right but it’s a big season too.

When we go through on Wednesday we’ll have to compete for all trophies. That’s certainly what it’s all about BUT, the last time we progressed further in Europe we failed to win anything, although it was the most exciting season I’ve experienced since our centenary year.

This is when the squad comes into it, and we’ve got a cracker which should be maintained and enhanced and for the first time we’re in a position to do just that. Fair doos if we replace who we sell, but we need a large and strong squad to cover all eventualities. Usually I get excited with the team or a player or result etc., but I must admit I’m really excited about our prospects as a club. Could this season be on a par with our Seville run?, the signs look good.

Fair enough Lubo, 13:45, I’m trying to stop myself being carried away, but after the 5 – 0 gubbing of Hearts, you can’t deny we’ve got a wicked mid-field that’s going to be solely responsible for damaging any team that stands in our path. You also seem to forget that Celtic is already through if there’s no goal at CP, our draw is as good as their win, as it stands.

I do admit though, our defensive frailties, which are also there to be seen, tempers my conviction, and our sure progress to further ambitions. Besides that….

    Hail Hail

I think it's attributed to Ghengis Khan but still applies today:

"It's not enough that I succeed, everyone else must fail!"

I'm not so sure about a UEFA Cup run for us - as we have seen recently the money earned from the competition is paltry compared to CL but does garner decent co-efficient points. I would rather see TFOD have an extended run in that and expose their squad to the maximum excertions. Meanwhile the good guys pit their wits against the best in europe and the gulf widens.

Just because we have one joint sponsorship deal, and for similar reasons (combined TV clout) went in with them for the EPL attempt, doesn't preclude the need for a single term implying we are joined at the hip.

As I said, it has been hijacked and used more to pull us into the more unsavoury aspects of the relationship.

What's wrong with using Celtic and Rangers when referring to Celtic and Rangers?

  • At 27/08/07 14:39, Paul67 said…

St-Gris, yes we do. There is one high profile player who will only come if we reach the CL. Despite the great football we are seeing these days, the SPL does not hold too much pull for some.

    Richie,

"If you know your History" then you will know that the Old Firm concept is a truly well ingrained concept and for good reason that our board cannot get away from because they dont want too. Like the Daily Record they use it when it suits them.

If like me you think it´s outdated and frankly insulting then the board should make a statement. The recent "Carling" deal would seem to suggest that this is a new initiative (i.e to lose the OF tag)

If they ever did release a statement I´d expect a joint statement with David Murray present ... btw I´m not kidding, but there seems to be lots of Tic fans that are kidding themselves on.

The board are caught between a rock and a hard place on this one. It´s a choice of money over morals so guess which one will win as fas as Celtic plc is concerned.

If you aren't playing, your value will plummet.

Taking 50% may well be a better financial option. £400k, plus a small step down in wages, may well produce more in the long term than £800k plus a drastic drop in wages after you have been in the wilderness for two years. If you are a free agent, there is also every chance that you will get a lump sum signing-on fee of some sort.

It´s a tantalising thought Paul that 20 million pounds is resting on the events of two football matches. If Celtic are the lucky recipients than I hope they put this income to good use. If Celtic are making a profit, then Celtic should look to ways to put the money back into the community which has sustained them.
    (Steps down from soap boax)

The Hearts chief seems to have hit on our strengths and weaknesses. We are still frail in defence and I hope Naylor´s form is not exposed. He probably needs a goal to give him his appetite back. I don´t think he has scored yet, has he? Paul Telfmeister did bag at least one in his time at full back.

Our team really is fourteen players with Strachan making substitutions at several junctures, everyone seems eager to play for the team. It won´t be the end of the world as we know it along Alexandra Parade if we cock up, there is always the Uefa and ending the season as champions, but it would be so sweet to be in the group stages.

For the new arrivals at the club it´s a great opportunity to savour a big European night and to want more!!!

I would rather have a player capable of coming off the bench and banging in a couple of goals, such as Kenny did at Pittodrie, than a bank balance £3M healthier.

Kenny appears to have settled at Parkhead, he has the potential to be a Celtic great, he is maturing all the time, note how he passed the ball in to the net for his first against Aberdeen. No daft bhoy there blazing it over the bar like last season.

It would be an error of judgement to sell him, he would be a steal at £3M, we would be much poorer without him. I would rather he wasn't sold at all but in the current market if he wants to go then I would maybe let them talk to him for no less than £5M.

Its not so much where the story originated from as the fact that Paul67 when asked didn't refute the story instead suggesting that £3M for Kenny would make good business sense. That's more worrying than any old meeja exclusive IMO.

are we about witness more media manipulation by Sir David of Blazers'R'Us? Sky reports that he has rebuffed Osasuna in their advances for Hemdani. So no Sno may go? Plan of action ? Unsettle promising young Celtic player, then see Hemdani go for undisclosed fee but stress that it was an offer not to be refused especially as the player was unsettled. Diverts a wee bit of attention from the fact that they NEED to sell, and one of their best players at that.

I feel if we could get 3 million for KM we should take the cash and run, while nobody can dispute Kenny's commitment and work rate I feel what we are missing is a striker that can hit the net with more frequency.
For me to much of Kenny's best work is done outwith the box in wider areas.

While we are on the subject of strikers I also feel that JVOH is struggling just now and we really lack an out and out goalscorer. I would hate to think this situation will come back to haunt us if it is not addressed before Friday.

Welcome Abby, good to hear from you.

McManus69, there will be a price that a player would be prepared to take on the understanding he was free to get a new deal somewhere else. Rangers have done this several times.

WGS, aye. Interesting, though, that he needed to comment. Let’s wait and see.

    Sure is rimtimtim.

Itz, each to his own opinion, but few were convinced by his signing on a Bosman a year ago, so £3m would be excellent business for a player who is not first choice, in my view.

I believe there is a good chance we will sign a new striker this week, is so, I don’t see Kenny getting too much football thereafter.

  • At 27/08/07 16:49, TighnabruaichCeltic said…

    Take your point Chris,
however I feel work rate and desire are not the main attributes we need in a striker just now, we need goals.

I don't think any of our strikers are 20 goals a season men, I worry if we don't do something about the striker situation now we may live to regret it.

Those are my fears also Tigh, but even if we got £3m for KM I doubt we could buy a 20 a season man for that ,sometimes its better the devil you know and with Kenny there is always the chance he could do another Aberdeen .

Fair comment Chris, don't get me wrong I am not desperate to punt KM i just feel 3million would be a terrific piece of business for a player who will not be first choice.

Theoretically, then, we could have medicals at 10pm on Wednesday already...

my guess is celtic have made them available by making it known to agents or whatever they can go. celtic do not want to transfer list them as it weakens their bargaining power, but none the less they are for sale at the right price

I however do not think zurawski will leave in this window, kenny i believe will as fair play to him he values first team football, also his stock is up after start to the season - a better wage for him probably

    revised bbc story

Celtic have made Kenny Miller, Maciej Zurawski and Thomas Gravesen available for transfer, BBC Sport understands.
Miller, 27, has struggled to find the net consistently since joining the SPL champions from Wolves last July.

But Celtic have strongly denied that he, striker Zurawski, or midfielder Gravesen are being forced out.

A club statement said: "Contrary to ill-informed reports from some media outlets, Celtic Football Club has not placed anyone on the transfer list."

English Premier League clubs Fulham, Everton, Manchester City and Derby have been linked with a move for Miller before the transfer window closes on Friday.

But Miller's agent, David Baldwin, played down reports that a move for the Scotland striker is imminent.

Celtic knocked back an approach for Kenny from Newcastle in January

    Kenny Miller's agent, David Baldwin

"He is under contract for three more years and only the club can do anything about that," he told BBC Sport.

"I speak to clubs all the time and, naturally, his name is going to come up in coversations and it is a testament to his ability that top clubs ask questions about his situation.

"But I speak to Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell on a regular basis and they knocked back an approach for Kenny from Newcastle in January."

Miller is sidelined with a hamstring injury that ruled him out of Saturday's 5-0 victory over Hearts and he will also miss the second leg of the Champions League qualifier against Spartak Moscow.

But the former Rangers star has scored eight competitive goals in 23 appearances for Gordon Strachan's side.

    MY SPORT: DEBATE
I have no argument with Gravesen and Majec, but Miller seems to be finding some form

    hank_hill

Zurawski joined Celtic from Wislaw Krakow for £2m in 2005 and made a promising start, netting 22 goals in his first full season.

However, a hamstring injury ruled the Polish international out for parts of last season, as he netted 10 goals from 34 appearances.

Gravesen has failed to establish himself in Strachan's plans since his £2m switch from Real Madrid last summer and was left out of the squad to face Hearts at the weekend.

The Dane was involved in Monday's 3-0 victory by Celtic's reserves over Hearts.

Scotland forward Derek Riordan, whose own future at the club has been in doubt, scored twice for Gordon Strachan's second string.

The side also contained central defender Bobo Balde, who has also been linked with a move away from Celtic Park

Lurker here, making his first "proper" post on here, so hello one and all. I recognise a few monikers and writing styles from the old BBC boards. Nice grown-up (in comparison to some other Celtic forums) blog you've got running here Paul67, well done.

    Regarding Kenny Miller and the supposed £3M price tag on his head. For those saying that we should "bite the hand off" any club putting that cash on the table, I would ask this question;

Who else within the squad can we rely upon for the pace we'll need in European and competitive SPL fixtures?

For those that say KM's did'nt score enough goals last year, I agree, however, the other aspects of KM's game helped us to one of our most successful (if not spectacular) seasons. Not only is he hard working and have pace, as is obvious, his assists, off-the-ball & lead-up play ensured his overall contribution to the team is worth more than £3M in the bank, surely?

How far would this £3M go towards buying a 20+ goal a season striker with all the similar attributes KM has? about 30% i'd reckon, then you have the perennial question of; would they come to the SPL?

I'd rather gamble the £3M that (injury and selection permitting) he'll be a 20+ goal player this season.

Kenny Miller has no touch and his finishing is very poor (usually)
So if we can get 3m for a player like that who cost us nothing a year ago then its a no brainer im afraid.

Not getting on his case just stating facts.

Stay away from the english market and we could probably get a pretty decent striker for around 4 million quid.

This KM story started in The Daily Record written by James Traynor. See my first post today. The story was aritten last night. This afternoon The BBC another of James Traynor´s employers publishes two stories. The first one saying KM could be leaving without any substance. The second one quickly appeared about one and half ours later with the Celtic official quote. The whole article unabashedly contradicts the report. James Traynor gets his money easy which is a good thing for such a talentless guy. He has bills to pay too you know. Now has the torch of aggravation been passed from STV to the BBC this week or is some wee hack foaming at the mouth getting excited about a heads-up from a good source and who may that source might be ? Billy Davies ? David Murray ? PL ?

We´ll know for sure on Saturday if we´ve been softened up for a KM move or await the next torch carrier.

I go for nobody coming in and nobody leaving and some money being banked unless we can move on TG, JJ, BB and bring in a quality striker and a.n other. That sounds like far too much complication for Celtic to deal with and for that all to tie in at such a late stage in the season would be a Carlsberg dont do Celtic Transfer negotiation scenario...
