Since I moved back to the US, it is easy to ignore the old media. I tend to stick to people like the BBC, Reuters and the major English papers (Times and Guardian) for my UK Football (should I now say Soccer?) news.
The Scottish media has become a joke..not just because of their bias, but it is simply just such poor quality. The journalists are much more focused on making news rather than reporting it.

Our media have been a joke for a long time.

My email yesterday to STV:
Having recently witnessed your article regarding sectarian singing by celtic fans at Pittodrie on Sunday I would like to complain about the following:
I deemed your article highly offensive and to be totally irresponsible journalism considering that the celtic support have been praised by all parties concerned regarding the weekend’s match.
If indeed 1 celtic fan was arrested in connection with this offence, then there is no way on earth this is a top story item.
The majority of the fans, 99.98% based on a support of roughly 5000, were excellent and never sung 1 unacceptable song all day.
For you to highlight 1 fan is an outright disgrace.
The article should have highlighted that once again, as per the Falkirk away game, the support were magnificent and certainly caused no areas for concern in relation to the new SPL rules.
Especially considering at the Celtic V Rangers game in March 2007, 9000 rangers fans were singing 19 sectarian songs, including some about the First Minister’s wife may I add, and you never even mentioned any of this.
This is clear Bias and totally irresponsible journalism of the highest order.
I also note that your website has been updated to state that the SPL have confirmed that no action will be taken against celtic as there was nothing to report.
This makes your story last night all the more ridiculous.
I look forward to your thoughts on the matter.
My EMAIL TODAY:
Following on from my email yesterday, regarding your claim of sectarian singing at pittodrie from celtic fans, and also following Celtic Football Club’s statement claiming your article, as I did, to be irresponsible, I would like to add the following:
Your news story last night claimed that contrary to REPORTS yesterday (sectarian singing by celtic fans)
The clubs fans have actually been praised by all authorities after the game and the SPL have confirmed there was nothing to report.
This was not even close to a retraction of your story, as requested by Celtic Football Club, but a small attempt at covering over your previous 100% inaccurate story which had no legitimacy whatsoever.
Your claim that contrary to reports is also totally inaccurate, as they were no reports, none whatsoever, you were the only members of the media to report this story, therefore there was 1 REPORT, and it was by YOU.
To report anything else is wholly inaccurate to say the least.
We, as Celtic fans and indeed as requested by Celtic Football Club look forward to receiving a FULL apology and a FULL retraction of your story.
Anything less than this would be totally unacceptable in light of recent events
I will be tuning in tonight to hopefully witness this apology and retraction.
I also look forward to a full reply relating to my first complaint yesterday and also the complaint above
SO GLAD TO SEE CELTIC HAVE BASICALLY SAID THE SAME THING ALSO
I EXPECT AN APOLOGY TONIGHT
TUNE IN AT 6.00PM!!!!!

We may we'll have friends in the old Meeja, However these publications have their own agenda, Which most of the time conflicts with our own.
It is my opinion, that they would have went into terminal decline in time.
Sites like your own, have, thankfully, just accelerated this proccess.
Their days are numbered...

All of this debate highlights again the powerhouse of an instituition that Celtic is.
The remarkable thing is the lack of understanding that some of the old media have for the way that information exchange is developing.
I hope to see the day (and the sooner the better) when the old media no longer can feed off Celtic to make themselves more profitable.
It would be a delicious irony to see them lose readers/viewers and therefore revenue from a source that they tried so hard to undermine.

Paul67,
As I said on the last thread, I believe that Mediahouse/Jack Irvine, Rangers PR people have had a hand in this. They are trying to deflect any criticism that has come thier way by going down the old "but look at them, they're just as bad" route but it isnt working. Hence the Record line today that "Celtic have escaped an SFA enquiry"
How can we escape from something that isn't there? The only ones escaping seem to be Bung FC's support from the SFA enquiry into the ICT singing?
Where can Duffield be?
-
Paul
I wonder if Scotland Today's viewing figures increased last night as Celtic fans tuned in for the "apology"? The boring old 'Controversial' strategy as flogged to death by bores such as McNee. The way to punish these people is to boycott, not add to their audience! Hit them where it hurts! Dans la poche!
As I posted yesterday, The Daily Retard never recovered from Thugs & Thieves. The Editor left as that rag was overtaken by The Sun as the highest selling chip wrapper in Scotland.
If you have access to Satellite or Cable you can watch most of your favourite programmes on other ITV regions.Boycott STV and let their advertisers know! Let's do them!
-
The Record again unashamedly shows it's true colours and true agenda with todays headline
'Celts will escape sectarian fan probe
We cannot escape something that never existed, but the highly manipulated Record knows if you fling enough mud some of it is bound to stick.
These sad people such as Keevins make a living out of trying to drag down our club.
I feel its now time for Celtic as a club to stand up to this and bite back at Sir Davids lapdogs.

Lennondinho, please let me know if the apology materialises, I will be watching The Simpsons instead.
Glasgowdave, decline is inevitable.
WG, I know, twice in two days, clearly I am not drinking enough wine.
Bambi, I know the Rangers defence to Uefa after their Villarreal game in 2006 made specific reference to Celtic supporter’s actions. This prompted Uefa to observe Celtic supporters, which they did and found nothing to report.
I also know Rangers blame their current predicament on Celtic fans reporting them to Uefa in the first place.
The temptation to throw some back must be irresistible.

Well Paul,
Thank God we've got some friends in the old media. I shudder to think what we'd get without them.

Greetings all....that's me back home after a bit of travel, mostly to Gaelic Scotland, but I did spend a wee bit of time with you saxons...and picts, as I did get to Pittodrie on Sunday...:)
This might be longish....assuming Mrs Weeron isn't shouting orders at me over the next 10 minutes...
First off....Financial Results. Top notch. Shame on those who are still complaining about this aspect of the club. Worth pointing out that these results did not come easy.
CL qualification and progress. Selling players (and getting some fans upset). Travelling the world on tour (again, a stick that some fans used to beat the club).
Point is, these results won't be easily repeated. They took hard work, and involved difficult trade-offs. So well done to everyone who contributed to them.
Next, Gordon Strachan. He's our manager. Support him to the hilt. If you don't, who else will? Remember Fergus, DR, Saddam? Don't you think that the meeja got license to print that junk due in part to the fact that they saw some 'supporters' turning against the bunnet? Think about it, guys.
Having said that, I don't often agree with TinyTim.....but there was some sense in one of his posts last night. The manager needs to be doing his job. Not anyone else's. Celtic would deny this, but I'd quite confidently presume that Gordon has been spoken to by the wise heads who run our Club.
Tiny, maybe I am confused by the jet lag. If I am agreeing with you inappropriately, just let me know....:)
Our midfield....it is gelling. It could be great. Aiden needs to make better decisions. If not, someone better will emerge. Donati isn't there yet, but you can see this coming together. On Sunday, Naka was screaming for the ball in the 'hole' a few times amd MD didn't see him. That will come. Hopefully, Appiah will too.....I'll just leave that comment hanging there.....:)
Pittodrie....I took my nephew to his first Celtic game. It was great. What a memory the wee man has of his first game. Given that none of us will have forgotten ours, I am sure that Sunday will stay with him for a while.
As a one or 2 game a year expat, I was pleasantly surprised by the good nature banter between fans and police, before and after the game. Great singing and no add ons. Big change in a year.
Finally, I was wondering why we seem to be slow starters. 3 games in and we haven't scored the first goal. We look like a 2nd half team. I don't know enough to know why. However.....check out the pre-game warm up. Both Killie and Aberdeen got their warm ups going before we did.
Both used high tempo pass and move warm ups. Designed to get the brain as well as the body active. Our prep looked half hearted.
Just a thought.
Finally, the Vatersay Boys concert at Drumnadrochit was a blast. Yes, Runrig were there, too. It rained ALL day. Up to our knees in soupy mud for 9 hours. My wee Quebecoise wife may never forgive me......:)

I saw and advert with Pele in it about impenetence.

I'm pleased that the Old Media's every word is being scrutinised as they have been getting away with it for too long - sticking the boot into us for no good reason. Even something as trivial as showing footage of one of our new signings mising a penalty is a negative & can influence the fans even before the player has kicked a ball in the hoops. Scotland Today is notorious for this.
However My favourite & this was pointed out by my good mate 'Tutti Frutti traction House' is the term 'OLD FIRM' being thrown into debates that have nothing at all to do with us. Duffield & Big Fat Derek are guilty of this on a regular basis.
So Derek what do you think of the Rangers fans sectarain chanting in Villareal & Inverness?
Well I don't know what more the OLD FIRM can do here?????????????
Let's bin the Old Firm tag as it does us no favours!

FROM THE BEEB:
Strachan charged with misconduct
Strachan was sent off by referee Charlie Richmond on Sunday
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has been officially charged with misconduct by the Scottish FA after being sent to the stand at Pittodrie on Sunday.
It follows receipt by the SFA of fourth official John Underhill's report into the match against Aberdeen.
Strachan is already appealing a four-match touchline ban following an incident last season.
If found guilty following the latest incident, he faces an additional six-match ban from the sidelines.
At Pittodrie on Sunday, Strachan was ordered to leave the pitch-side by Richmond following an argument with an Aberdeen official.
Coach Tommy Burns claimed Strachan had been defending his assistant, Garry Pendrey, following accusations that he had made a rude gesture to the Aberdeen fans behind the dugout.
Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell would not go into detail on the issue but said of Strachan: "We back him 100%."
MY SPORT: DEBATE
It is cowardly to shout abuse at a manager and then get stewards when there is a response
happydon
This is the third time Strachan has been reported on a misconduct charge and the outcome of his appeal will determine the length of the latest ban.
He also has the right to appeal against the latest misconduct charge.
The SFA will be writing to Strachan with copies of both the fourth official's report and that of referee Charlie Richmond.
Strachan will have to wait for the case of his sending off during April's match against Hearts to be heard before any new punishment can be imposed.
He contested that four-match suspension and the SFA has yet to organise a hearing for his appeal.
Strachan was ordered to the stands by referee Stuart Dougal on two occasions during matches against Hearts last season, in August 2006 and in the 29 April game at Celtic Park.
Dougal was unavailable for Tuesday's scheduled hearing, which Strachan requested to appeal against the mandatory four-game ban.
-
weeron "Up to our knees in soupy mud" careful...
-
The Left Winger
Thanks for posting the notice of Gordon Strachan being reported to the SFA for Sunday's incident.
Does anyone know if non-football people are called to these hearings?
For example the Policeman who stood beside Gordon whilst the verbals passed between him and the Aberdeen official must be a prime witness - more so than Charlie Richmond who was fifty yards away on the park or John Underhill who was in the vicinity but did not actually hear what passed between the two men.
Or is it smply the case that any exchange regardless of what was said is deemed reportable?
Cearly the exchange was heated and a bit of finger jabbing but it must also have been relatively polite otherwise the policeman would have been obliged to intervene if abusive or offensive language was being used but he just stood there and seemed none too bothered.
So a policeman standing one yard away from the verbal spat is totally unbothered by the exchange and yet Charlie Richmond who is 50 yards away feels it necessary to report this.
There must be a logic there somewhere but I'm not sure I can find it.
-
I agree Paul, STV has been deleted from my SKY 'favourites'. No more will I be watching any of the tosh they broadcast.
Genuine mistake or not, the absence of an apology tells us everything we need to know about their agenda.
-
Do you think that if Gordon Strachan had a disciplinary hearing coming up before a big match and was to inform the S.F.A. that he was unable to attend due to work or family commitments, etc, he would have it put off until a later date?
No,me neither.

Ma views on this will likely be regarded as weird.
I don't want tae huv 'friends in the old media (or whatever the new media is for that matter!)'.
I don't want tae know whit team he supports, or whit school she went tae, or whether they wear bowlers or brogues, turbans or kilts, saris or hajibs.
I can judge and want good quality honest reporting.
I want opinions honestly given n’ argued.
I can agree wae 'enemies' and disagree wae 'friends'.
But we can all agree whether any story is even worth arguing over.
Friends and enemies?
Remember a few years back, the tribute programme by the BBC tae Henrik. I can’t remember who narrated it, but I can tell you who wrote the script – stan’ up Chick Young – and it was brilliant!
For the love of yer own particular God, its not a war and even if there is conflict of cultures, the terracings of Celtic Park and Ibrox must never again become the battlefields.
I don't know the answer, dis anyone?.
Perhaps we should get all the clowns herded into a neutral venue on Mars and let them sing at each other until they are hoarse.
Maybe we should arm them all wae machetes, armalites, thompsons and semtex, and open the gates onto the killing fields. They all want tae be heroes don't they?
We should let the press give performance marks out of ten and category prizes for, biggest flag waving bigots, best insulting and degrading chants, and decibels of bile. Finally every last letter of the garbage produced by the press tae mark the occasion should be burnt inn ritual cleansing.
Everyone can then look at the inevitable products of hatred, and maybe then normal people can get back to football and everyone can support the good things about their history and the bad things can have disappeared in smoke.
Anyway what's happening wae Teddy Bjarnasson?
-
TinyTim,
strange question. If you had heard her sing, you'd know why. She is a wonderful Gaelic singer from North Uist. A real songbird.
The Vatersay Boys are superb. the played at a family wedding a couple of years back...that I missed...:( They are big Celtic fans, and dtove to Seville in an old school bus. I couldn't find them that day either....:)

If a supporter is arrested for sectarian chanting, and the match official does not report it, does the SFA’s laws allow them to punish the club?

Even though there are a number of Celtic supporting journos in the media, there are still many that adopt an anti Celtic stance at times.
Hugh "I love Celtic" Keevins was previously an excellent writer with the Scotsman, but sold his soul when he moved to a tabloid. The same applied with Gerry McNee.
Ronny Cully's writings are like those from the Beano.
One of the best of the current crop is Anthony Haggerty. He writes in a tabloid in a reasonable manner, and when he is interviewed on TV comes across in a rational manner.
Bring back Archie McPherson for some proper journalism, even with his Greek Mythology comparisons. Incidentally, wait for the big man's forthcoming statement. The man is still hugely influential in Scottish football.
-
CardiffBhoy :- There does seem a bit of confusion, apart from me being sure (or fairly sure) that I saw it it's also reported in the sun supergoals section and there is a quote from the player "I shoudn't really have celebrated as much as I did, I knew the booking was coming and took it on the chin" I'll have to watch the tape tonight to see if I can clear it up.

I am sure you have had help from that rare, but not extinct, species, a journalist with integrity. ( And I do not equate that with one of a Green persuassion btw)
On this occassion methinks you are receiving guidance from Board. Yes it is always prudent to have friends in low places....But...Hmmmmmmm.

I have always admired his Integrity and his Intelligence. Now my primary concern is that it ends up with him leaving because of the Heat his Integrity and Intelligence will generate. spot on and Archie a blue nose at that. The problem with the old media is that they are no longer first with the news. The only way they can continue to sell is by entertaining us (ahem). 2 main consequences is that the standard goes dowm and the purported journalists now believe that they are the stars.
Much of the tabloids are given over to reader input (phone ins), big brother (though hardly anyone watches it), quotes from other sources (the View) and pictures of stars. very little of journalism.
But that is what there readers must want.
What you see is what you get
You've made your bed, you better lie in it

Just how long is a "swoop" in football terms ?
I've been reading for ages about the Foxes "swooping" for Riordan. Just how long does it take ? How high in the air are these clubs when they begin their descent ?
And of course next week we have the apparent "sealing" of players. When does the "swoop" result in a "seal" ? and can they get envelopes that large to put 6 foot 4 inch full backs ??
And not content with all that confusion we are made to believe that a big imaginery door existed all along, when the transfer deadline "slams" shut...

The irony(or is it paradox) of a fox swooping was not lost on me as it is normally the fox that that may fall victim to a "swoop" by say a huge eagle.
A seal would be an unlikely victim of a swoop as I dont think the Eagle would hunt off shore, I could be wrong. Your thoughts.............

KH..
A distressed seal on a beach dressed as a fox (probably as a result of some nautical stag do) could possibly trick the eagle, swooping from a high position...
But good point nonetheless :)

If this does not reflect your view you should understand

Impenitence with customers unfortunately DOES make good business sense these days. At least in this specific market. Especially when the 'clients' have the memory of a goldfish.......
Such is the culture........
The Big C I think it is sometimes called on CQN...
....And the goldfish will contiinue to take the bait.
BTW I did not mean to imply you could not think for yourself. Or that the Board were friends in low places....Quite the reverse in fact.
Peace.
However...... Press Conferences & Provoking the Beast!
I do think the Celticfc are faced with a Fascinating Dilemma here. How exactly do they counsel GS.....
Ethical Code versus Business Code.
Free Speech versus Least Said Soonest Mended
Like you said Paul67 they are planning an extension to the trophy room...But the conflicting perspectives above Must have a bearing on how they determine what the exact size of that trophy room will be.
For me personally it is real Conundrum...
I find the Honest Intelligence of GS a breath of fresh air. Unique it is and I personally celebrate it as a paragon of Freedom of Speech. Face it there is little of it about.
The conundrum...Can Your Leader be too truthful?
I worry I may no longer witness GS Honest Press Conferences.... Oh if only our political leaders were more like him.... What an example of leadership.
Our culture is becoming base, our freedoms are being eroded, and we are being dumbed down.... Journos have a role in amplifying this..... Political, economic and community leaders acquiesce. Indeed we all do with how we choose to act...Or not act.
GS does not acquiesce. I RESPECT how he acts.
But I worry more that we may lose a winning manager with a long term plan.
Free speech? No it has never been free...
The dug the other day talked about the concept of free speech..... And for once I agreed with him 100%.....I fear GS will eventually show that Free Speech is only a concept...Much to our cost.
THERE IS ONLY ONE GORDON STRACHAN...
How True.
How Absolutely True.
Long May He Stay.......
True?

In the wake of Peter Lawwell's robust defence of Gordon Strachan and Celtic's unambiguous statement re STV, is it safe to assume that their response to the Daily Record's scurrilous article will be equally forceful?
There is much at stake.
Once an article appears in print, it is there for ever in the archives.
Historians refer to those archives to tell a new world of events that happened in the past.
Can you imagine thirty or forty years down the line, people reading about the financial genius and philanthropist who headed Scotland's Second Greatest Institution ,combating the unpunished forces of bigotry from across the city.
"It must be true, because it was in the papers", they will say.

Yes, the apology was grovelling - I saw no need for Bhardwaj to get on his knees and almost start weeping, and the twelve minute speech apologising was maybe excessive, but fair play to them for fully retracting and fully apologising.

You have to love them, they only have our best interests at heart.
We will thank them for it one day.

GS: 'Rangers have cultivated a style' of playing this season.
-
GS referring to a couple of cases of the Daily Huddle reporting inaccuracies. Blimey if our own TV station gets it wrong.

Paul67.
I think I would be inclined to disagree with you, on the part that it would be wrong to adopt a seige mentality, in regards to the media.
I would'nt go as far as the old battan down the hatches routine, but I would withdraw any goodwill that Celtic give to the media at present.
I would do an Alex Ferguson for a start,Gordon should refuse to speak to the Assembled Media at press conferences,Tommy Burns can answer the questions asked.
Secondly, give any exclusives to Celtic Friendly Mediamen, mind you there is'nt many of them about at the moment,I think that would annoy them when they gather for their press conferences.
I feel for Gordon, he must think that everyone in black, and in the media, are out to get him one way or the other.
What has he done that make people dislike him so much, even on this site there has been calls for his neck, it can't be his interviews, that is a must for me every week,I love him giving a bit of grief to his attackers.
Maybe I'm a cold blooded sadist, that I enjoy Gordon giving as good as he gets, but it's compulsive viewing for me every week.
My main point when I came on was to say, if that clown of a referee had'nt interfered in it all, it would have burnt itself out, and there would not be any writing about it now,the arguements would have been finished on Sunday night.
Now it's going to go on and on in perpetuity,as I say I feel for the wee man.
Dont let them get to you Gordon.

just went on to LetThePeopleSing to see if they had the STV retraction. Instead I found -:
LetThePeopleSing.com has been force to closed while some legal issues are addrerssed.
Does anyone know what the script is with the site?

GS:
1. Derek R loves the club, I want him to stay but Aiden and Naka are my favourite wide guys and Derek's favourite position is wide-left. He can be a success here.
2. Jiri cam to GS and apologised for how the article came across, GS hadn't heard about it.

This week like weeks in our past will see the tempering of the support, board and Gordon Strachan.
Adversity is like a forge for us.

Good stuff! Pretty incongruous that there should be a cash machine on the front of the shop too.
-
Forgive me comrades, for I am sinning...I am watching a match on Rangers TV!
However, its not the usual fare, its the game where Copenhagen humped them and yet they still scored a flukey goal in the end.
How on earth did that team achieve anything? Berg, Thompson, Malcolm, Khizanishvili, Ricksen, Vanoli...its a joke!
-
Noel,
I guess that's how they finally managed to get rid of Sebo - although £1 seems bit steep.
-
WGS on clyde suggesting that he would need £4 mill plus to improve on any position in the team, but doesn;t think the money is there.
also suggests that there have been no bids for any players and that all players are happy.

Spot on with your CSC name - that's what I took, playing it cagey, not giving away how much we have to spend and nobody'll be leaving.

Thanks, there is no rush.

Normally can't stand the dross on Clyde and don't listen for more than a few seconds before realising that they will not be telling me anything I don't know already (Ref. E-tims). But I enjoyed listening to our manager tonight, so well done Peter Martin (nee McGuire).
I have heard proper journalists say that Celtic's brilliant manager is great company if given a chance to talk at length about football and that to me was evidence of that.
As someone here said today, it's all about quality. STV have given us nothing of interest for years, Jim Traynor, Hugh Keevins ditto. If they were footballers they'd be in a pub league turnin up late, expecting a game, because they used to play for a good team, immediately start slaggin everyone in the dressin room, go out, try and fail to hit 40 yard passes a couple of times, shout at the ref and team-mates and then pretend that the hammy's went!
Good quality journalism is all the fans need and want. First choice, the manager or players in their own words, first hand. Second choice a good piece, well-researched, well-written or spoken. It's not too much to ask is it?
-
Missed Scotland Today, due to bhoycottical reasons, did we get the apology. P.S. the Sauchiehall St pictures are superb, as was the Sebo for a quid comment.

Surely the time for a takeover is when the shareprice is low?

Tinytim,
I really don't know. She grew up in Uist, though her name is hardly of that area. Smashing singer, though....

I think that i used to work with her dad.
The only thing is he never mentioned Uist.
