Midfield master class, but McDonald dink leads the way

Did you notice the dink?

It was a different side of the field and not as deep, but the execution of Scott McDonald’s chipped cross that allowed Shunsuke Nakamura open the scoring against Hearts yesterday was similar to that in Moscow earlier this month.

The victory over Hearts was a midfield master class, but the link play and movement of McDonald was key to the overall play. He is a striker, and I keen to see him get his name on the score sheet, but his ability to collect and hold the ball allows others to flood forward in support.

Scott Brown won the Carling Man of the Match award, Massimo Donati had an equally good claim and then there was two goal Shunsuke Nakamura.

Donati is getting better every game. His composure inside the 18 yard box is reminiscent of another Italian who wore, and then discarded, the hoops. He will continue to improve, which is just as well, as his cross-field passing still needs to tighten up.

I don’t know if it was the sight of the impotent ghost of our former nearest-rivals, or the avalanche of goals, but Celtic Park was back to its best yesterday. I gave some thought during the week to the efforts of the Jungle Bhoys, who attempt to combat apathy and social awkwardness and put some life into the Celtic home support. On leaving the ground I thought that if it was like that every week the Jungle Bhoys would not be needed.

Perhaps we need the product on the park to be right before the atmosphere can follow.

I'm not sure what it was about to be honest but the blurb on it read "One Million Dead, Three Million Dispersed, Their descendents remembered."

The heading was some kind of Irish which I can't honestly claim to have understood.

Did anyone hear the Jim Traynor phone in on the way home? Someone phoned him in and said that "Go Home Ya Huns" is a sectarian song. Traynor said "Get a life" and cut the guy off.

I am sure they all had an enjoyable evening.

We really must do something about a social evening between now and the end of the year.

Pleased to meet you and the rest of our friends yesterday,

    See you again,

    Martin.

    P S,

    THE GAME WAS WONDERFUL.

Last season I think we scored 4 goals in a league match only once, the opening game of the season, ths year we have scored a4 and a 5 in the first four games.

Sensational performance yesterday, particularly in midfield. And where I was sitting there were at least 5 parties of Japanese people who all seemed to have a fantastic day out. I particularly liked the way the Celtic fans around them seemed to make a particular effort to include them in the fun. Hopefully they go home with happy tales and spread the word.

indulge not the dark forces of ML8. I hear the Carluke branch of Hertz Supporters is back on the road again. I trust they enjoyed the trip to Celtic Park.

When the match announcer stated they'd to wait for 20 minutes after the final whistle little did he know there'd be none of them left 20 minutes before it.

They also have a branch in ML2 9. I believe it was established when Darnel The Original And Worst signed J Iscariot of unhappy memorials.

Which reminds me - get well soon Neil McCann.

Bhoys great meeting up with you all yesterday. Sitting suffering after topping up with a few glasses of wine when I got in last night.

On a more serious note I went to pick up my Sunday papers this morning after mass and I nearly burst into tears with the picture on the front of the Herald of the young boy Rhys from Liverpools family at Goodison yesterday.

You cannot even imagine what they are going through.

Sorry for bringing the blog down a bit but it is a heartbreaking story and maybe the game yesterday gave the family a wee bit of rest bite from their pain.

Right im away to do my penance in the gym to get the chemicals removed from my oversized body.

I went to school in ML2 and have a few friends still there. Although most of my best friends are from the regions of ML11 and ML8.

Great stuff yesterday. Enjoyed it all, and won't repeat what has already been said so well. Some have mentioned that we will improve. I agree.

Massimo will improve his fitness and his willingness to fill the defensive 'hole' when the opposition has the ball. Kingston strode into that area before banging the ball off the post. Massimo was sucking air 20 yards behind. Once he gets his wind, he'll be a player....:)

Full backs. I'm at a loss to comprehend our inability to strengthen this department.

Aiden. Gordon Strachan is being brilliant with this lad, showing (as he should) great patience with a young lad still learning the transformation between the wee boy's game and the pro game. It is a nonesense that some have criticised Gordon's man management skills. Many a coach would have hooked Aiden in each of the last 2 games.

In both cases, he left him in there, and he eventually came on to a game. With the manager's patience and support, Aiden can become a major player for us.

Caldwell and McManus. It was our best pairing last season. Looks like it will be this season, too.

And finally, when the police message was broadcast for the hertz fans to stay behind at the end of the game, I remarked that this should be directed to the Celtic support. I had a point......

Here. Just back from a lovely lunch in the old town of Salamanca.

Mrs First and the weans saw some trinket or other in a tourist shop that they hadn't bought yet and went to add it to the collection. So I have returned on my own to our excellent digs near the Scots College, which I intend to look in on later.

I'm delighted the Bhoys are doing so well in our absence. The big countdown to the summer Cup Final starts now.

Celtic were a treat to watch yesterday, mainly due to the more dynamic midfield which was probing and driving for the full game.
In Scott Brown we have a seriously good player who should contiue to improve, I really did not realise how good Scott is when he was playing for Hibs.Massimo improves with every game and makes punishing runs when he breaks up the play.Naka was Naka and will thrive with these two beside him, Aiden tended to run with the ball too much at times but he provided the cross for the third goal.
We lost the ball a couple of times in dangerous positions notably Mark Wilson in the second half when he tried to be too fancy and in the first half when Kingston hit the post, but no great alarms at the back.
Good to see Artur interacting with his fan club in the second half, Im getting quite excited about our prospects with this team, we only need to win the game on Wed cant see it being Nil Nil and no disrespect to Spartak but we should beat them considering or home record in Europe of late.
I sincerely hope that Lee Naylor comes back to the form of the early part of last season and soon.

It was nice to meet everybody yesterday.
Malceye, i am sorry that i didn't get time to say hello.

GL2 .I hope that goal doesn't put up the asking price.

    BSM .What a name!

I ended up walking to the match with Noel,Estadio and BSM .

At one point i thought that someone was going to ask either Noel or myself if we were on our way to middle earth or back to the shires?

Anyway a great result. Our most entertaining performance since Benfica.

The two fullback's are a concern, and i would like to see some goals from open play from our strikers.JVOH must do better.

Wednesday will be a much stiffer task.
We have a really good opportunity to go through.

That's the stuff we want to watch every week. Good comment Paul about the crowd reaction - give them what they want and they will respond in kind.

I think Brown has everything. Bertie Auld and Paul McStay in a single package. I hope he controls his temperament - a few more games like yesterday will have the ref's reaching for their pockets at every opportunity.

I think we persevere with the full-backs because we know they can play better. There is also room for improvement in Aiden and JVoH's games - not a bad thing.

    Hail Hail.

I suspect that we are in for an interesting week....though if no business is done, I think we have a fine (though a bit unbalanced) squad.

    interesting article

i hadn`t realised that Maloney was travelling up and down to Glasgow etc

i had thought that the homesickness thing was a bit of a ruse to cover lack of form or opportunity

the articles reads as if his feelings are genuine
i think he would add to our midfield , imo a better all round player than Aiden and can see the pass much better, with runners like SB,MD and Naka in space ...what a thought

not to mention his free kick taking , i felt when he played with Naka that defences had no idea how to defend free kicks ...not that they can do much with the Naka man on his own

    would complete the midfield imo

I've always resisted the G.O.D. concept but when we get through,(touch wood)on wednesday and they fail to progress, I can see the finacial gulf being of such a massive difference that it will reflect the gulf between us and them in the early nineties.

35 Million difference last year and the same this year could make create for us finacial domination which could last a good few years.

I believe the next week to be potentially the most important for celtic since Fergus turned us into the modern celtic we are today.

on the downside, and there always is

i agree with the glaring inadequacies in both full back positions, a good euro side hopefully not spartak will
punish both wilson and naylor especially on current form.

they both can play better and will need to, as despite what has been alluded to for weeks on this platform celtic have no intention of buying new classy full backs - so what we see is what we get.

    just my opinion mind

    afternoon all

really conflicted about maloney coming back. Think he's basically chosen the wrong team( assuming he had his pick...), the wrong city and the wrong time. Listening to what WGS said at the time, it was maybe a bit early to make the move down south. For his own benefit he should have spent at least another season in Scotland & got some more CL experience.

From our point of view, what could he add to our squad? He's a better player than Riordan IMO, sure, but I'd rather see us spending money on fullback and an out & out striker.

acchht. It's no my job to make these decisions. I'll leave it to the wee man and then just moan if he gets it wrong. ;)

y por cierto, I'm going to be in seville for the moscow game. Any hostelry recommendations gratefully recieved. not a Seville veteran but remember stories of an Irish bar raising prices or something like that. A few pointers please.

Andy Gray didn't think the first was a penalty (he didn't think Vidic saw Berbatov, and Berbatov got to the ball anyway), the second should have been a pen, and the third was claimed more in hope than expectation.

The game yesterday was sheer joy.Midfielders who attack the opposition's penalty box !!!! what a great idea. Both Donati and Brown were outstanding and there presence and quality is helping Nakamura weave his magic. He rarely wastes a ball and is so comfortable on it.Caldwell at centre half definately makes McManus a far better player. But the full backs Naylor in particular looks to be suffering.Something has happened with this player as he was much better last season.
Now a Celtic victory on Wednesday preceded by a Red Star ko of the Teddy Bears would be a fabulous way to end the month of August.

As Hiro Nakamura says ' Save the cheerleader, save the world' Our own Nakamura will do the rest.

Copy of an e-mail -from FF-which was sent to every media outlet that the poster could spell-

    "To whom it should concern.

Will you be reporting the signing "go home ya huns" by what was clearly thousands of the home supporters at Celtic v Hearts football match yesterday on Saturday 25th August?

The anti bigotry organisation Nil by mouth lists the term "hun" as a word used as derogatory to protestants.

The fact this word is used by Celtic supporters against Rangers and Hearts supporters backs up this fact, as both Rangers and Hearts are traditionally seen as clubs with a protestant support and I cannot fathom any other link between those two clubs which would cause them to receive same secterian abuse from Celtic supporters.

I will be reassured if your media outlet does refer to this incident, as currently their has been a strange silence on the aforementioned secterian singing.

In the name of balanced, unbiased journalism please do the honourable thing and report all secterian chanting, including when it is commited by Celtic supporters.

I also wonder if one day I will hear anything from your media outlet on the term "animals" which is clearly sung by Celtic supporters when referring to Rangers supporters in their club anthem "its a grand old team"?

Yours in hope for some real journalism.
